Subsidence events occurring above inactive room-and-pillar (R&P) mines, including abandoned mines or sealed portions of active mines, are classified as unplanned subsidence, because of their timing and distribution are unpredictable. When investigating such subsidence cases, many uncertainties exist and disputes often focused on whether the observed structural damages are caused by mine subsidence or other natural or artificial causes. However, solid evidence to identify the cause is often lacking. In order to conduct a complete and impartial investigation, thorough knowledge of subsidence theories and other ground control topics, as well as broad experience, are required.

Recent developments undertaken to improve mine productivity are also dealt with together with some notes on proposed measures to obtain further gains in productivity.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated rapid froth flotation through more efficient bubble-particle collisions that improved the overall flotation kinetics. An in-line static mixer efficiently mixed the bubbles, water, and ore, selectively attaching these bubbles to the hydrophobic mineral's surface. As the mixture entered the flotation chamber, the hydrophobic mineral was already attached to the bubbles and was quickly floated away from the remaining ore pulp. The rapid flotation system was evaluated for beneficiation with a western porphyry copper ore containing 0.67 pct copper, and a phosphate-bearing amine flotation tailings sample containing 9.5 pct P2O5 in a quartz matrix. Over 88 pct of the copper was recovered from the ore in a rougher concentrate containing 5.9 pct copper at a rate 7 times faster than conventional flotation. Sixty percent of the quartz in the phosphate-bearing sample was floated at a rate 4 times faster than conventional flotation. The unfloated product retained 80 pct of the phosphate in a l6.9-pct P2O5 concentrate.

Explosions and fires originated from longwall gob due to the formation of methane-air mixture have been a severe threat to coal miner’s lives.Many numerical studies on coalmine fire and explosion hazards have focused on the airflow in roadways and mine gobs. However, most of these studies isolate the gob from its surrounding roadways, and the network analysis and the CFD method are applied independently tomodel the two classes of airflows. This approach greatly limits the ability of simulatingmine ventilation flow, especially unable to consider the effects of gob boundary conditions on air exchange between the gob and the surrounding airways. An innovative finite tube method (FTM) is developed to couple the one-dimensional mine ventilation network (MVN) and the 2D/3D gob flow field (GFF). In FTM, GFF is discretized into a finite number of flow tubes each of which is formed by any two adjacent stream lines. These tubes, representing the gob’s field flow, connect the MVN into a new coupling network. To solve the coupling model betweenMVN and GFF, an iterative solution technique is developed inwhich the MVN analysis is used to evaluate the boundary pressures for GFF simulation and in turn the FTM feeds the GFF results back to the coupling network. Based on the FTM approach, a model for gas migration in gob has been established for delineating the hazard zones of explosive methane concentration and spontaneous combustion. A computer program is developed to implement the FTM simulation. An illustrative example with five flow tubes representing the GFF is created to verify the stability and convergence of the FTM solution process. A simulation example also indicates that the accuracy of FTM is improved by 12% compared with previous method. Results of an application case show that the program is capable of quantitatively evaluating the gob’s risk zones prone for spontaneous combustion and gas explosion as well as performing risk analysis for various ventilation scenarios.

In the past few years the world petroleum industry has increasingly felt the weight of changes in the principal economic factors affecting pro¬fits. As a result of, these changes, it has been necessary for many oil companies to acquire certain new facilities in order to strengthen their competitive positions and thereby protect their tremendous investments in crude oil reserves, pipe line facilities, refining operations, and marketing outlets. Principally these needs have been met by new capital outlays. A supplementary, method of acquiring needed facilities, however, has been to obtain existing facilities through complete or partial acquisition of other companies.' properties. It is this method of meeting competitive pressures with which this paper is concerned. This paper presents a statistical breakdown of the mergers and acquisitions which occurred in the oil industry between January 1, 1954, and October 1, 1959, showing the frequency' with which certain types of properties were acquired in each of the years studied. In addition, it discusses the principal economic conditions which stimulated many of these property trans¬fers, comments on the effects of these mergers on the consuming public, and indicates the types of, mergers and the rate at which they may be expected during the next three or four years. The basic data upon which the statistical analysis presented in this paper is based were taken from several published sources. Obviously they are somewhat incomplete because not all mergers and acquisitions were reported However;, a careful search was conducted through, The Wall Street, Journal, The Oil and Gas Journal, Potroleum Week, and The Oil Daily with the result that the data should be reasonably complete and comparable for each of the years studied, It is believed, therefore, that the statistical analysis which' follows provides a reasonably accurate indication of the general trend in mergers and acquisitions during the period studied.

"Underground structures such as square/arch steel sets, king beam structure, etc. are widely used for the roof support in underground mines. In designing and calculating the required carrying capacities of these underground structures, how to identify the potential rock loads on the structures over long term is a challenging question for ground control engineers. Based on design practices of both surface and underground structures, the authors have designed and applied appropriate load factors in underground structural design projects to accommodate different rock types, entry/intersection dimensions, roof geologic conditions, availability of roof bolts and water, etc. Classification of load (reduction) factors for large-span underground intersections are presented for reference. Success of designed underground structures in effectively controlling roof stability over years indicates the applicability of the load factor concept for underground structural design, and its same significance as of the load factor specifications in ASCE/SEI 7-10, ANSI/AWC NDS (2015), and AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications (2012). The load factor concept will facilitate ground control engineers to appropriately utilize popular structural design software, such as RISA-3D or -2D to efficiently design and analyze underground structures.LOAD FACTORS IN STRUCTURE DESIGN APPLICATIONSIn structures, loads cause stresses, deformations, and displacements. Assessment of their effects is carried out by the methods of structural analysis with the help of load factors. Loads can be increased or decreased by load factors to meet the requirement that design strength be higher than maximum loads. For example, in designing a staircase, a dead load factor may be 1.2 times the weight of the structure, and a live load factor may be 1.6 times the maximum expected live load based on the Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) method. "While many classic mineral processing circuit design approaches rely on deterministic methods, numerous studies have shown that the uncertainty inherent to the various input parameters can significantly influence design decisions. In a separation circuit, many of the technical uncertainties can be mathematically represented as statistical distributions for the unit recovery and feed grade. These uncertainties are then propagated by the circuit design and reflected in the circuit performance indicators, such as product grade and global recovery. An effective design strategy entails identifying which units are most influential in this uncertainty propagation and thus merit further consideration. Unfortunately, few analytical tools provide this information, particularly those that rely solely on deterministic methods. However, one promising approach is through the application of Taguchi’s method, in a fashion similar to statistical tolerancing of manufactured products. Since the technical challenges are fundamentally similar, Taguchi’s method shows promise in evaluating the level of compounded uncertainty by various circuit designs while determining the role of each separation stage on the overall selectivity and variability of separation circuits. This paper demonstrates Taguchi’s method in several two and three unit circuit designs. INTRODUCTION AND METHOD DESCRIPTION Uncertainty in Mineral Processing Circuit Design Analysis and estimation of uncertainty propagation in mineral processing separation circuits is an essential and significant aspect of an optimal circuit design procedure. Most of the current circuit design methodologies have been constructed, implemented, and validated using a deterministic modeling approach. However, numerous studies have shown that the inherent uncertainty induced by uncertain design parameters can be a significant factor in many mineral processing applications (e.g. Kraslawski 1989; Xiao and Vien 2003; Ghaffari et al. 2012). Thus, an effective circuit design methodology must be able to quantify uncertainty in separation circuits with limited input data. This paper describes Taguchi’s method, as an experimental design technique, to approximate uncertainty in mineral processing applications, and then the similarity of results between Taguchi’s method and Monte Carlo Simulation is investigated. Monte Carlo Simulation The term “Monte Carlo Simulation” has been used to refer to a variety of stochastic simulation methods spanning a broad array of business, technical, and scientific domains. Most generally, Monte Carlo Simulation refers to numerical analysis which is based on (pseudo) random sampling from a domain of input parameters with a known statistical distribution. This methodology allows one to determine the distribution of expected results from a standard deterministic process model. Execution of a Monte Carlo simulation begins by identifying the domain of input parameters, statistical distributions for each parameter, and a deterministic process model which describes the anticipated result as a function of the inputs. Next, one discrete random sample is taken for each input parameter, considering the input distributions. The process model is then solved for this mix of input parameters, producing a single simulation result. This procedure is then repeated a “large” number of times, utilizing new randomly sampled input parameters for each simulation iteration. Once the desired number of iterations is reached, the results of each independent simulation are aggregated to produce descriptive statistics such as minimum, maximum, mean, standard deviation, kurtosis, and other distribution parameters. Given enough iterations, the Monte Carlo method fully explores potential synergies between the input parameters. This paper reviews some of the facts of the release and attempts to quantify the degree of hazard encountered by the local community. Some of the difficulties in assessing the true degree of absorbed dose and the assumptions necessary for calculation purposes are presented.

At least for the time being, these seems to be general but not universal agreement that Mississippi Valley type ore deposits formed entirely or in major proportion from heated connate brines (e.g. 1) Even with that agreement, major questions remain. I will present a coherent geochemical model and look at alternative views in the context of that model. The pattern of the following discussion is 1) the general geochemistry of the ore fluid, 2) the density-temperature relations and possible mechanisms of flow of those fluids, 3) the mechanisms of transportation and deposition of the ore minerals, and 4) a summary of a coherent model of genesis. The data equivocally define much about the deposits. The answer is still elusive.

"According to the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement, Abandoned Mine Land Inventory System, in 2013 there were 98 underground mine fires in nine states. This is considered to be an underestimate for the actual number of fires nationwide. Many mine fires are started by people burning trash where the coal seam or an abandoned coal mine is close to the surface. Other fire ignition sources include lightning and forest fires. Once ignited, a coal mine fire can easily spread into the remaining coal pillars and mine entries. Once established, the fire creates its own ventilation system supporting further combustion by drawing air down into the workings through unsealed mine shafts, fractures and surface subsidence depressions. As the coal left in the workings from the past mining operations burns, the mine void can collapse, causing subsidence and creating dangerous voids, damaging overlying surface structures and roadways. The products of combustion include smoke and noxious fumes such as carbon monoxide gas. These products are released to the atmosphere through fractures that develop within the ground surface, killing vegetation and creating serious health hazards (Richmond, 2017).Abandoned mine fires, if left uncontrolled, can burn for years and, in fact, one of the most wellknown mine fires in the United States is the mine fire in the Borough of Centralia, PA, that began on May 27, 1962. Reportedly, officials decided to clean up the local landfill for the upcoming Memorial Day holiday by burning the garbage on the site. Unfortunately, the landfill was located on the site of an abandoned strip-pit mine on the edge of the Borough (Dekok, 2009). The strip pit had been left open after being excavated around 1935 and was approximately 23 m (75 ft) wide and 15 m (50 ft) deep. It is believed that the lack of a properly constructed noncombustible shale barrier in the strip pit enabled the fire to spread to adjacent carbonaceous refuse material and then to nearby coal mine workings (PA DEP, 2017). As time went on, the fire grew and spread under the Borough and directly affected the residents despite various efforts to extinguish the fire by the state and federal governments (Fig.1). In 1984, a voluntary program was begun to move residents from their homes. Many accepted buyout offers for their properties and moved elsewhere and after leaving, their homes were demolished. In 1992, the state used eminent domain to take control of all the property within the Borough. In 2013, after years of litigation, the eight remaining residents were allowed to stay for as long as they lived. Today, only a few buildings remain within the Borough (Centralia, PA, 2014). This fire has been burning for more than 55 years."

"From monitoring gas levels and air quality in coal mines to protection from collisions for large vehicles at mine sites, SICK offers a wide range of sensors and systems to improve safety and to monitor potentially dangerous situations. SICK offers solutions for the analysis and monitoring of underground coal mining atmospheres. These systems supply the coal mine operator valuable safety and ventilation information, as well as data which identify and monitors atmospheres of those production areas within the mine which may or may not be worked, such as Goafs and sealed areas. Underground coal mines contain dangerous gases, which must be monitored and controlled in order to allow productive mining operations to take place and to minimize the risk of explosion. Underground mines are a potentially dangerous place for mine workers. These are the main reasons for using Tube bundle systems SICK has had great success in selling these systems into the Australian and New Zealand Markets and this is helped by the strong drive for mine safety from both the Mine Owners and the Regulatory bodies charged with the responsibility of ensuring Mine Regulations are met. The Australian mining industry uses Tube Bundle Systems at almost all underground sites, even after mining has ceases and the mine is placed in care and maintenance. Sick has been working in international markets for some time now but has had limited success in selling Tube bundle Systems to these markets. However in recent times there has been raised interest in Tube Bundle from China, India and Turkey as these countries strive to improve mine productivity and lessen the risk of explosion or Spontaneous Combustion. Our lack of penetration into International Coal markets has been very much based on the perceived cost of the system, not the benefits to safety and productivity. Unless a mine has had an event such as spon com or a Methane explosion they rarely consider the very low level measurement capability (20 PPM CO & 100 PPM CH4) or the long term trending benefits of the Tube Bundle system. It is only after a catastrophic event the System is considered. Real Time or electrochemical Sensors are commonly used to monitor the Mine Atmosphere, the real problems of methane build up or potential Spon Com in Goafs and sealed areas cannot be monitored using Real Time Sensors as the electrochemical cell deteriorates after approx. 12 months and in sealed areas these cells cannot be maintained or replaced. Whilst the Technique of Tube Bundle Systems is quite old SICK have spent many years redesigning the Tube Bundle System into a cost effective and real value for money product. The system uses state of the art sampling and highly accurate Infra-Red wide Spectrum Analysers."

Based on the 2010-2019 Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) accident report database, 91% of reported ground control accident in the US longwall mines were caused by gateroad roof instability. This can be related to the significant changes in loading conditions that gateroads are subject to from the development to the longwall abutment loading phases, combined with the thinly bedded shale roof, found in many US longwall coal mines. One of the challenges in designing efficient support systems is to understand the roof instability mechanisms along with support-roof interactions under this complex loading condition. Field monitoring of roof displacement and stress changes coupled with detailed analyses using numerical models are well-documented techniques to study the causes of roof instabilities. However, traditional modeling techniques require additional calibration to simulate delamination and buckling of shale roof, one of the main roof instability mechanisms in longwall mines. One alternative modeling technique is the UDEC Bonded Block Method (BBM) where bedded roof and support interactions can be explicitly captured. This paper presents the development of a BBM model of a longwall entry at a 180 m depth of cover with a three-entry gateroad layout along with roof extensometer monitoring results. The models are validated against the monitoring data, showing the potential for BBM numerical models capturing the complex roof and support system interactions to assist with optimizing gateroad layouts and support systems.

Employing the combination of two types of polyelectrolyte might become necessary to enhance both settling rate of the flocs and water clarity of fine particle suspension in high capacity thickening process. The sequence of addition, mixing, type and dosage of polymer affect the overall performance and capacity of a thickening process. For the sedimentation of copper flotation tailings, the cylinder test results showed that two different techniques may be used to achieve the required performance including high settling rate of flocs, underflow density and overflow water clarity, by either adjusting pH prior to anionic polyelectrolyte flocculation, or using a combination of polymer flocculant and coagulant (dual polymer system). The dynamic thickening testing results showed that only the approach using a dual polymer system is able to meet the required performance. The effects of polyelectrolyte dosage, the sequence and numbers of polyelectrolyte addition, feed concentration, bed level and rake speed on the settling rate, underflow solid, and water clarity were studied in cylinder test and a laboratory dynamic thickening unit with various conditions related to the thickening process. The dynamic test is especially valuable in evaluating the addition and mixing of polymers. The results were evaluated quantitatively, using total suspended solids in supernatant, underflow density and capacity per unit settling area per unit time as the measure of effectiveness. The objective of this study is to quantify and explain some of the parameters involved in the sedimentation of copper flotation tailings.

This paper describes the application of a cyclonic flotation column (CFC) for coal cleaning. A CFC makes use of centrifugal force to create a density gradient in a column to augment the froth flotation process. In a CFC, a series of angular helical inserts is attached to the wall of a conventional column and coal slurry is mixed with a series of impellers attached to a central shaft. The hydrophobic froth concentrates near the center shaft and moves upward, while the relatively heavy hydrophilic particles concentrate near the wall and are guided downward by the helical inserts. Results of pyritic sulfur removal from an Upper Freeport coal during CFC flotation are discussed in this paper.

In Minnesota, reclamation of active aggregate mining sites is primarily regulated through local permits issued at the county, township, or municipality. However, for abandoned or depleted aggregate mining sites, a responsible party for reclamation is often no longer available. Since 1995, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has reclaimed several abandoned aggregate sites using innovative public/private partnerships and emphasizing native plant materials. The purpose of these projects is to demonstrate cost effective reclamation methods that can be utilized by both aggregate operators and local government and to promote mine planning and resource identification as it relates to reclamation.

In response to concerns voiced by local, state, and federal agencies and various environmental groups, the Central Florida Phosphate Industry and various governmental agencies have been investigating methods to accelerate the consolidation of waste clays generated during phosphate washing and beneficiation processes. The objectives of research efforts have been to reduce the storage volumes required for clay waste, accelerate reclamation and to return the land to approximate pre-mining topography. Government and industry research to accelerate waste clay consolidation has evolved two general methods: gravity thickening and chemical flocculation. Gardinier, Inc. one of the phosphate mining companies, evaluated the use of synthetic (polyacrylamide) flocculants as an alternate waste clay thickening method in response to mining conditions encountered at their Fort Meade Mine and the proposed North Hardee County extension of the Fort Meade mine (Figure 1). After considerable research and evaluation, the Alsthom-Atlantic Clariflux Super-flocculation method was chosen by Gardinier, Inc. as a method to seriously consider for use at their Fort Meade mine.

In September 1855, 55-year-old Noah Spencer Kellogg and his $3 jackass named Bill discovered what was known at the time as a “blow out” of high-grade lead and silver ore. The deposit was located on the side of a North Idaho mountain high above the South Fork of the Coeur d’Alene River. The ore was later assayed at 41,141 g/t (1,200 oz/st) silver. Kellogg named his discovery the Bunker Hill Lode, after the June 17, 1775 Revolutionary War battle of Bunker Hill. A thriving pioneer settlement sprang into existence around the resulting mine’s workings and was eventually— and appropriately — named Kellogg. The peak rising hundreds of feet above the mine’s adit was named “Jack-ass Peak” after Noah Kellogg’s hairy companion.

The central Dodoma region of Tanzania is one of the regions defined by the Tanzania Craton (TC). Although the Craton gold mineralization has been well explored and hosts most of the gold deposits in the country, the understanding of the mineralization potential of the Dodoma region is still an enigma. This study using trace elements geochemistry of soil samples aims basically at providing information for future exploration works in the region by delineating the possible mineralized zones, the pathfinder elements, and the lithological facies to target. Generally, there is an anomalous spatial distribution of a probable Cu-Au deposit in the N, NE, S, and SE parts of the region and are prospective areas worth exploring for gold from the Gaussian variogram models. The multivariate statistics shows that Cu, Pb, Zn, and Fe are the main pathfinder elements while searching for Au mineralization in the region. The gold deposit is most probably a Cu-Au porphyry type, although VMS type of Au deposit cannot be precluded in the area. The mineralization in the area is largely associated with tonalitic orthogenesis, tonalities, granodiorite, and granitic rocks with Cr-Ni-Co-V forming elemental association. This elemental association is similar to other gold bearing greenstone belts. The style of mineralization in the Dodoma region is similar to other gold deposits within the TC; hence, successful exploration methods in these ancient gold deposits like Geita and Kahama gold deposits can be adopted in the event of any further exploration exercise in the central Dodoma region.

In cold regions rinsing of spent cyanide leach heaps is stopped during winter and is resumed again after snow melts. The effect of this idle time on the overall cyanide removal process was studied in this work. Samples were collected for rinsing tests from one heap at the Ryan Lode Mine of Citigold Alaska, Inc., near Fairbanks. The material was tested for cyanide removal a large column, 1.22 m high by 20 cm square, and in a small column, 1.22 m high by 10 cm in diameter. The rinse water was analyzed at regular intervals to determine the rate of cyanide removal from the solids. It was found that diffusion plays a major role in the removal of cyanide from the ore particles. Calculations showed that the insulating effect of the snow cover on the heap provides an excellent moderates the interior temperature of the heap, and would be expected to help the progress of the diffusion reaction during winter. The result expected result wil1 be higher cyanide values reporting to the rinse water after snow-melt.

G.A. Carmody and L.B. Anderson We wish to comment on the paper by G.W. Heunisch (MINING ENGINEERING, January 1987), which raised several important points regarding treatment of acidic waste waters. This paper confirms, in part, tests carried out by Allyn Corp. Allyn is the manufacturer of the proprietary product Alka-Ment, one of the materials that Heunisch tested. The first point is the extreme sensitivity of the sedimentation rate on the nature of the treatment material used. This apparently results from differences in nucleation of the metal hydroxides, and is consistently higher for Alka-Ment. This decreased sludge volume is also observed when Alka-Ment is combined with flocculants, such as organic polymers (see Table 1). Our second point is to emphasize that Heunisch's work shows how dependent the sludge volume is on pH. It is common practice to overtreat AMD by raising pH to 9 or 10. This practice, in addition to being wasteful of material, actually decreases the density of the resulting sludge, probably by creating charged particles that do not readily coalesce. When treating with Alka-Ment, we recommend that the treatment be monitored by testing both pH and dissolved iron. For both tests, it is important to allow adequate time to elapse between treatment and measurement, so that dissolution of alkali, aerobic oxidation of iron, and precipitation of the metal hydroxides are nearly complete. Our tests have indicated that from 30 minutes to one hour is commonly required. Only in this way can a minimum pH be attained, with adequate treatment, denser sludge, and lower treatment rates achieved. Thirdly, Heunisch correctly recognizes that ASTM titration of Alka-Ment does not reflect the true treatment value available in a unit of Alka-Ment. Our work at Allyn indicates this is a most important consideration when evaluating various materials for the treatment of acidic waste waters. While we were unaware of Mr. Heunisch's work, we welcome comparisons between Alka-Ment and any competitive products readily available for field use. Allyn has hundreds of hours of laboratory and field data we are ready to share with interested parties treating acidic waste water.
