With some land based mineral deposits being fully exploited across the world, deep sea mining is set to revolutionize global approaches to the search for precious metals and other sought after minerals. [ ] Previously, the financial implications of deep sea mining outweighed the benefits of access to the mineral rich deposits identified all around the world. The process of marine diamond mining off the west coast of southern Africa started in the late 1950?s by a Texan, Sammy Collins, and subsequently continued by De Beers to the present day, has proven to be an excellent proving ground for the development of technology and mining systems that ensure a sustainable and financially viable business. The replacement of Boston’s elevated Highway I-93 running north to south through the heart of the city with 8-lane tunneled roadways, coupled with the underground extension of Highway I-90 eastward to Logan Airport, has earned the Central Artery/Tunnel (CA/T) Project the position of the largest infrastructure project in the U.S. today. The gigantic interchange featuring numerous ramps where these two main branches of the Artery intersect required the construction of three huge jacked tunnel boxes that were pushed beneath eight active Amtrak and commuter rail tracks that had to remain undisturbed in spite of poor geology and a minimum of cover between the track beds and the tunnel crowns. Ground freezing was chosen as the method of stabilizing the soil over the tunnels, and it was extended in one area to stabilize the ground at the intersection between the tunnels and an abutting deep cut-and-cover excavation. Because many standard geotechnical instruments consist basically of open standpipes filled with water, it was a major challenge to keep them de-iced and in a condition to provide data on vertical and lateral ground movements. The efforts to do so are herein described.

In a recent paper by Smith and Wen(1) the adsorption of sodium dodecylsulfate and trimethyldodecylammonium chloride on kaolinite was studied. As would be expected considering the general negative character of kaolinite, except perhaps at quite' acid pH values (2,3,4), it was found that trimethyldodecylammonium chloride adsorbed strongly on kaolinite at basic pH values. Furthermore, it was found that sodium dodecylsulfate adsorbed strongly on kaolinite at acid pH values, particularly at initial 1H values below pH 3 (final pH values near pH 4). It is interesting to note that adsorption of the anionic surfactant was strong under conditions where the kaolinite was apparently slightly negatively charged (2). The present paper reports on an extension of the work by Smith and Wen. In this paper the effects of the presence of dodecyl alcohol and sodium hexametaphosphate on adsorption of sodium dodecylsulfate and trimethyldodecylammonium chloride on kaolinite are considered.

Abstract The consumption of barytes in certain paints polyurethane foams, seamless, flooring, glass, brake linings, plastisol caskets for food containers and in fluids used for gastrointestinal X-ray examinations rely on tie unique properties of barium sulfate, There are no readily available mineral substitutes. Barytes are also the essential raw material for the manufacture of industrially important barium chemicals. High quality barite ore has become scarce throughout the world. Processing ore into quality end products is both capital and energy intensive. These factors have tended to limit availability and increase prices which have encouraged the use of alternates and restricted market growth.

Technical Support, one of several major organizational units in the Mine Safety and Health Administration, provides technical assistance to the mining community in all areas of health and safety. One of its many areas of expertise is noise control. Depending upon the needs of the operator or inspector, the services provided can range from locating major noise sources to actually building noise controls. Over the years a vast amount of knowledge has been obtained as to what will work and what will not. DESIGN GOALS While many noise controls have been developed for mining equipment and operations, the most acceptable (ergo successful) have achieved the following design goals: - a noise level reduction of at least 5 decibels; - minimum interference with production; - inexpensive to install; and - effective in reducing low frequency noise.

There is an increasing requirement for geophysical surveys carried out during geotechnical investigations to provide direct information about rock quality or other geotechnical parameters. With the paucity of information to correlate geophysical results with actual rock properties, this is still difficult to achieve and additional research effort needs to be performed to address this issue. Nowadays, several researchers have been described detailed studies which designed specifically to investigate this matter. Generally, geophysical techniques which are used to estimate seismic velocities in the subsurface focus on the low strain levels that are not large enough to induce significant nonlinear, nonelastic stress-strain behavior (Luna and Jadi, 2000), which is normally evaluated when addressing liquefaction potential of soils in the shallow subsurface. Soil parameters relevant to seismic ground response (Rechtien, 1996) are density, relative density and void ratio, permeability, shear modulus, water saturation, soil fabric and stress history. Detailed characterization of elastic properties near a major construction site (e.g. a bridge) is useful for near field dynamic analysis of soil-structure interaction (SSI) effects. The coupled effect of the bridge foundation (piles, piers or abutments) and the soil immediately surrounding these substructure elements is essential for dynamic SSI analysis of these critical bridge structures. This paper presents a geophysical investigation performed along the under construction highway of Egnatia Odos, approximately 13 km west from the town of Xanthi in N. Greece. Twelve geotechnical boreholes, drilled at the maximum depth of 75 m, approximately located 20 m from the Nestos River. The objective of the survey was to obtain the high-resolution compressional and shear wave velocities of the shallow subsurface for computation of elastic engineering properties of the unconsolidated material interposed between the investigated boreholes. Joint interpretation of borehole logs and velocity images obtained by P- and S-wave traveltime inversions outlined shallow geological anomalies.

The natural hydrophobic response flotation method for beneficiation of printed circuit board comminution fines (PCB CF) still requires many studies to further basic understanding of the process and the flotation traits that the PCB CF presents. Varying particle size distribution (PSD) and water recovery under the scheme show that higher mass pull, obtained at the finer PSD, gave lower water recovery but higher value loss. The reverse also holds: the least mass pull at the coarsest PSD used, -106 + 75 µm, gave the highest water recovery per unit mass pull with the highest reverse recovery. This is unlike what obtains in primary resources processing, where higher water recovery is often with increased fines entrainment. The reverse recovery loss here is, therefore, more due to entrapment with the heavy mass pull characteristic of the method than to the entrainment of value with water. Other peculiarities of the system observed are discussed, with the goal of improving the performance of the process, and broadening the general knowledge of flotation systems.

INTRODUCTION Background and Objectives Underground coal mining is a vital component of West Virginia's economy. However adverse environmental effects including ground subsidence and aquifer dewatering are often associated with such mining activities. Many families in northern West Virginia still rely on private water wells and springs for domestic water needs. In such areas where underground coal extraction and land subsidence have occurred, a disruption of the ground water flow system commonly exists with subsequent drainage of water to lower levels that may extent as deep as the mine workings; this causes loss of water supplies to landowners and represents a nuisance to mining companies 2 This report represents a summary of an M. S. thesis project in geology at West Virginia University by the senior author (3). The intent for this study was to document the effects of underground coal removal on ground water levels at selected mine sites in northern West Virginia, as observed from water wells, springs, and streams. This research should be useful to coal companies and regulatory agencies and aid in recommendations of future water well locations and specifications in areas of existing or proposed underground coal mines.

The Illinois State Geological Survey added Minerals Processing to its capabilities in 1966. Subsequently, the Minerals Processing Team and several Geologists collectively thought what neither would have thought of separately. The results included a number of projects. discussed here are: 1) The Utilization of the Fines from Kitty Litter as a Bonding Agent for Iron Ore Pellets; 2) Separating Plant Waste from a Commercial Silica Sand Producer into two marketable products, including a closely sized Silica Sand; 3) Marketable Feldspar Sand and Silica Sand from Dune Sands near the Kankakee River; and 4) A Method for Making Metallurgical Grade Fluorspar more desirable as Blast Furnace (Steel) Feed.

This paper summarizes recent developments in computer modelling and estimation technology. Significant improvements in computational and modelling efficiencies have advanced technical computing to the stage where, for the first time, it can be realistically applied to short-term mine planning and production control. Real-time interactive grade estimation of complex shapes, volumes and grade distributions, based on immediate turn-around of production sample grades, is now possible. An added benefit is the ability to produce complete geostatistical estimates which include confidence limits. These can be incorporated into the decision making and risk assessment processes of production control. Why the need for new technology? What is wrong with the conventional methods which have sufficed for the last thirty years? The response is manyfold. They suffer from inefficient computational processes and conflicts with geostatistical theory. They are responsible for constricting the flow of information between the disciplines involved in the mine production process. Finally, it is illogical to approximate irregular geological and mining volumes with orthogonal sets of rectangular blocks. Geological materials do not occur in block formation; and mining methods which excavate rectangular blocks have yet to be developed. Other computer based technologies have evolved out of the dark ages of rectangular approximations and have successfully dealt with irregular three-dimensional geometries. It is time for computing in the mining industry to follow this example and take full advantage of available technology. To provide the necessary background, consider the basic requirements for successful implementation of technical computing within the mine production process.

Samples of the same coal measure overburden spoil were obtained from three different mine sites. Site A used a 27-m3 tub-mounted dragline, Site S used a front-end loader and truck combination, and Site C used a 6-m3 crawler-mounted dragline. The spoils were analyzed in the laboratory for the strength parameters using drained triaxial tests conducted on 150-mm diameter specimens. Regression analysis was utilized to determine the appropriate failure criterion for the strength data from each site. Spoil obtained from Site S yielded higher shear strengths than Sites A and C.

"Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have advocated the use of instrumentation in underground mine ground control studies to aid in understanding failure mechanisms and to calibrate numerical models. The purpose of these efforts is to reduce accidents and fatalities in underground mines resulting from inadequate design of mining layout or supports. A recent examination of some results of stress change measurement raised some questions about the validity of elastic solutions in ground, such as coal. Particularly under deep cover as is prevalent in the western United States, the coal around a borehole would likely have yielded so that post-yield behavior would govern the response of the instrument.A numerical experiment was conducted by NIOSH researchers using the FLAC software (Itasca Consulting Group, 2016) to investigate the response of the borehole pressure cell (BPC) and the biaxial stressmeter to varying degrees of plastic behavior. The pre-encapsulated BPC cell pressure exhibits increasing departure from the elastic case with decreasing post-peak-strength slope of the stress-strain curve. On the other hand, because the BSM usually provides much more confinement to the surrounding rock than does the BPC, the measurements obtained from the BSM do not depart significantly from the changes in secondary principal stresses and directions as calculated by the elastic solution.INTRODUCTIONSeveral years ago, Larson et al. (2000) described several instruments that NIOSH had used in underground field studies and how to monitor them with dataloggers. This information is still relevant because of the need to understand how excavation affects the stability of mines and thus, the safety of mining personnel. One class of instruments described in that paper includes those instruments that measure change in rock stress. Although several such instruments might be used to measure stress change, the focus of this paper is on two instruments with which NIOSH has had more recent experience—the borehole pressure cell (BPC) (Geokon, 2018a; RST Instruments, 2018) and the biaxial stressmeter (BSM) (Geokon, 2018b). Other instruments, such as the CSIRO hollow inclusion stress cell (HICell) (Earth Sciences, 2019; Worotnicki and Walton, 1976) may be included in future studies.Early studies in the development of the BPC were those of Panek and Stock (USBM, 1964), Sellers (1970), Lu (1984), and Babcock (1986). Babcock’s work is particularly useful, but his setting and testing range was far below what we experienced in the NIOSH study, and it was Babcock’s data reduction scheme from his laboratory experiments that was used to calculate stress change in the NIOSH study (NIOSH, 2019a)."

The Marlin deposit is a low sulphidation Au-Ag, epithermal system, with reserves of more than five million ounces gold equivalent. Marlin was discovered in December 1998, after a nine months grassroots exploration program in western Guatemala, focused on volcanic terrains of the Sierra Madre. Before the Marlin discovery, several gold prospects were found along an east-west corridor of approximately 70 kilometers long, associated to regional faulting systems. The deposit is hosted in faults, within Tertiary andesitic rocks and bedded volcano-sediments. Host-rocks are argillized closer to the surface and propyllitized at depth. Mineralization occurs in multi-stage quartz stockworks and breccia veins.

When Dr. David Gully solicited this paper last spring a few questions basic to commodity trade between the U.S. and world markets appeared perplexing. Why, for example, when the demand for aluminum was at a peak and when little expansion of capacity had taken place, was the dollar price half of what it had been at the previous peak? Or, why in 1984 when imports surged by 50% as the U.S. economy pulled out of its recession did the dollar not fall, but rather rose by 35%? And, why when the experts all seemed to agree that the dollar was grossly overvalued did the price of gold continue to decline? Surely these were extraordinary times for the mineral economist. When this paper was written in late July, 1985 the answers seemed clearer. The prices of many commodities were not low - the dollar in which they were denominated was too high. In other currencies many commodity prices were indeed high. The dollar was overvalued in trade terms by some 40% caused by an influx of short term coupon investments made by foreign money managers to take advantage of the higher short term interest rates in the U.S. relative to other international banking centers. With a decline in the relative difference in interest rates, an unhealthy buildup of foreign bank accounts and a perception that the dollar would fall, the dollar did start to decline rapidly.

The 6th International Mine Ventilation Congress (IMVC) was held May 17-22,1997, in Pittsburgh, PA. This marked the second time that the IMVC was held in the United States. The first congress, organized in 1975 by the Mine Ventilation Society of South Africa, was held in Johannesburg. Since then, the meetings have been held every four or five years, with the 1979 meeting being held in Reno, NV. This was followed by Harrogot, England, in 1984; Brisbane, Australia, in 1988; and Johannesburg, South Africa, again in 1992. The IMVC provides an international forum in the field of mine ventilation for the purpose of sharing technology and experience. The meetings are attended by ventilation engineers, academics, consultants, government employees and vendors interested in mine ventilation. As was evident from this meeting, significant progress has been made in the field of mine ventilation. However, disasters continue to occur around the world and long-term health problems continue to affect workers. So there is a need for further improvements in ventilation technology. The highlight of the conference was the technical sessions in which more than 80 papers were presented by authors from more than 20 countries. In addition to the technical sessions, the conference featured field trips to a number of mine properties throughout the United States. Five short courses were offered on topics ranging from respirable-dust control to mine fires and explosions. The conference also featured a trade show. It exhibited the latest advances in ventilation equipment, computer application software, consulting and engineering services, and health and safety equipment.

A detailed assessment of acid rock drainage (ARD) potential was conducted at the Quintette Coal Mine site in northeastern British Columbia The site is unusual in that the coal seams contain low sulphur levels as compared to eastern coals (typically less than 0.5%), and the non-coal wastes generally do not to have the potential to generate acid on the basis of static ABA tests. The presence of small iron-stained seeps on the pit walls indicate localized sulphide oxidation, while the overall mine site drainage has remained of excellent quality with extremely low levels of metals after approximately 15 years of mining. Thus the site provides an excellent comparison to more problematic coal mine sites. For the Quintette assessment, static acid-base accounting (ABA) analyses of individual samples were compared to criteria for potentially acid generating materials developed for the U.S. Appalachian coal, as well as criteria developed in British Columbia for hard rock mines. Geologic units were characterized by the percentage of samples, or weighted thickness, that was deemed potentially acid generating (PAG). Links were then made to actual seepage and water quality emanating from geologic units around the site. Seeps at the site demonstrate a large range in pH (2.32 to 8.18). The few acidic seeps (pH < 4.0) were found to contain elevated levels of sulphates, dissolved iron, manganese and aluminum, consistent with the metals typically of concern in Appalachian coal mines. Other heavy metals that were detected in acidic seeps at Quintette included copper, zinc, nickel and cadmium. The use of simple ABA tests, and comparison of individual sample results with the Appalachian and British Columbia criteria, was found to be useful in predicting the probable sources of the small localized acidic seeps.

SOLUTION MINING Solution mining techniques present a means of extracting soluble ores, particularly such materials as salt and potash, from horizons which are not accessible by conventional mining. In the process of dissolving materials, it is evident that solution may be complete or partial. In general, the solution mining operations described in the following section relate to complete solution of the desired compound. Even though the solution of material is complete, there may be instances in which insoluble material is present to a large extent either as granular separated particles or as insoluble layers. The process required for obtaining the desired product involves access wells to reach the deposits, sufficient water supply to yield the production goals, and the development of an underground cavity. The process of solution mining, therefore, depends to a great extent on three factors: availability of a relatively pure strata or formation of salt or potash to be mined, access well or wells, and adequate control of the solutioning process so that enlargement of underground cavities can be fairly well delineated. Since halites represent the most general ores mined by this procedure, the considerations which follow are based primarily on the production of sodium or potassium chloride. The producing formations may be in the form of bedded evc~porites wherein the salt member may be some 30 to 500 ft thick or from salt domes in which great depths of salt occur. Solution mining has been carried out to depths of nearly 10,000 ft. The recovery of saturated brine from wells drilled to effect the solution-mining process leads to further processing. In many instances, the procedures are relatively simple and involve simple recrystallieation or fractional crystallieation, while in others more complex flow systems are required before a final product is obtained. The intent of this section is to provide information relative to the basic procedures for obtaining materials which are soluble in water and to acquaint the engineer with the various aspects of the overall problem which in many instances, may become quite complex and present numerous difficulties. The storage of fluids, particularly hydrocarbons, underground has proven to be a very important part of industry operations. Cavities formed in salt provide excellent storage facilities. The formation of well-defined controlled configurations of such cavities has been possible because of better understanding of the solution process, wide experience gained over nearly 30 yr, and improved technology in drilling and completing wells, surveying caverns, and the operation of numerous types of systems. Solution mining techniques will improve in the future. Many facets of the simple operation of pumping solvents and extracting valuable minerals require further study. Developments undoubtedly will occur to further the processes of mining by solution. In addition to those whose names appear in connection with the individual subjections which follow, a major role in assembling and processing the material in this section was played by Dr. D. A. Nepheline syenite is a light-colored feldspathic rock that is used primarily as an addition to the glass batch. It is also used in ceramics and as an industrial filler. Composed essentially of the soda and potash feldspars and nepheline, nepheline syenite contributes needed alkalis and alumina to the glass composition. And because it contains a higher proportion of these oxides per unit weight, it is a formidable competitor for feldspar in northeastern North America and parts of western Europe. Nepheline-bearing rocks are not uncommon on a world scale, but few are able to be beneficiated to a composition sufficiently low in iron to be used in the making of glass. Nepheline can only form in an environment deficient in silica. Hence free silica, as quartz, is always absent in the primary mineral assemblage. Biotite, hornblende and magnetite are usually present as minor accessory minerals, and zircon, garnet, muscovite, and apatite may be present as trace minerals. Nepheline syenite is produced for glass, ceramics, and filler markets by Unimin Canada Limited at Blue Mountain, in south- eastern Ontario. Unimin acquired the former Indusmin and IMC properties from Falconbridge Ltd. in 1990. Elkem Nefelin AIS commenced production of similar products from Stjernoy Island in northern Norway in 1961. Unimin acquired this company in 1992. Nepheline has also been a byproduct of apatite mining on the Kola Peninsula for many years, and in 1951 the production of alumina from nepheline was commenced in a plant near St. Petersburg (Leningrad). There are now four plants in the Russian Republic, two smaller ones based on nepheline tailings from apatite mining and two larger and more recent plants in central Siberia using other nepheline resources. All four of these plants are integrated complexes that produce alumina for the subsequent production of aluminum metal, sodium and potassium carbonates, and portland cement. Roofing granules are produced by the 3M Company from a nepheline rock in Arkansas. In 1980 and 1989, trial shipments of nepheline syenite were recorded from new sources in Brazil and western Turkey respectively. Recent interest is also recorded for deposits in China, Saudi Arabia, and British Columbia.

The conventional troughed belt conveyor system is the most widely used form of equipment for transporting bulk materials in the world today. The reason is not only because it is possible to transport a great deal over a long distance when compare to other types of equipment but also due to its greater economic efficiency and low initial and running costs. When dry, powdery materials and liquid materials are being conveyed, there are enclosed transport methods such as flow, case, air-slider and pipe line. In addition to features of the belt conveyor, a system employing a pipe line to transport dry powdery and liquid materials has always been considered an ideal method. This has been brought into reality through the Pipe Conveyor Sys tem.
