Dispatching systems have attracted considerable attention in the last years due to substantial gains in productivity achieved through their implementation. These systems will be extensively used in the future by mine operators as a means of optimizing productivity. This paper describes a computer simulation model designed to study the feasibility of continuously dispatching trucks in open-pit mines based on different operating procedures. The system developed is semi-automated and performs an active role by suggesting to the dispatcher the best assignment according to each specific circumstance. It is modeled based on an advance-clock increment to reduce computing time and allows the insertion of heuristic dispatching policies and equipment real-locations when breakdowns occur. Dispatching procedures taking into account long-term production objectives are considered in system development.

It is ap-parent from observing the industrial practice of sulfide mineral flotation over the last decade that progress is being made in optimizing the operating aspects of flotation. Examples of this are the availability of improved instrumentation and related computer control devices, the modification of mechanical flotation cell designs, the introduction of column cells, better reagent dosage control, blending of feed ores, increasing attention to coarse and fine particle separations, the successful introduction of new frother chemistries, etc.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION History The most striking feature of mining in the United States has been the infrequent use of longwall systems. This system, which accounts for the majority of coal production in Europe, Japan, and other countries, is only recently growing out of its infancy in the mining of normal coal seams and is still untried in the mining of thick coal seams in the US. Its use in the mining of metal and nonmetal ore bodies has been virtually ig¬nored, except for isolated instances in trona, copper, and uranium. Longwall mining is believed to have originated in Shropshire, England, towards the end of the 17th cen¬tury (Laird, 1973). Although the method used would be considered primitive by today's standards, many of the basic concepts have remained unchanged. Longwall mining of coal in the US was first introduced before the turn of the century, but it never gained acceptance as it did in Europe. Historically, longwalling was a cyclic method where a single cut of coal was removed from the face on the producing shift each day, and the work of building stone packs in the gob and manually moving roof support was completed on the off shifts. Due to the amount of dead work, productivity was extremely low. In Europe, however, longwall methods were required despite the high costs involved, because only by this method could coal under heavy depth be mined with any reasonable degree of recovery. Reserves of coal lying under shallow cover, and therefore minable by room¬and-pillar methods, were long ago inadequate to supply most of Europe's coal requirements. In the US coal min¬ing has historically proceeded laterally with the new mines in virgin areas to replace old mines; in Great Britain, Germany, Japan, and many other countries, mining must proceed downward to greater depths. The depth of cover for most coal operations in the US is shallow, i.e., 61 to 305 m (200 to 1000 ft). This, combined with large reserves, has made room-and-pillar methods almost universally applicable. However, longwall systems were tried around the turn of the century. Whenever used, it was frequently noted that the opera¬tion was under the direction of men with foreign ex¬perience and was tried under ideal conditions. Some of the mines that were using longwall or had tried longwall prior to 1910 were the Radiant mine, CO; Vinton Coal Co., PA; Cambria Steel Co., Johnstown, PA; Grundy County and Spring Valley, IL; and unnamed mines in Washington, West Virginia, Kentucky, Iowa, and Kansas. As late as 1961, there was one circular longwall in operation at Centerville, IA. The first modern-day op¬eration to take advantage of European technology and longwall methods was Kaiser Steel Corp. at its Sunnyside mine near Price, UT. Due to deep cover and extremely poor roof conditions, combined with a need for in¬creased production, Kaiser management decided a new method was required and turned to longwall in 1961. The first longwall consisted of an Anderson Mavor shearer loader, British Jeffrey-Diamond conveying equip¬ment, and Dowty roof supports with a capacity made up of two and three 27-t (30-st) capacity props. After nor¬mal start-up problems, this unit averaged over 454 t (500 st) per shift (White and Palacios, 1976). During and after World War II, technology in hy¬draulics and controls had advanced to the point that self-advancing supports and hydraulic props were being developed. In 1960 only I % of West German produc¬tion was from mechanized longwall faces. This in¬creased to 37% in 1970 and 63% in 1973 (Kohlgruber, 1974). In 1976 there were 246 coal mines operating in the United Kingdom. Although this is only 50% of those operating ten years ago, the production has increased 42%, mainly through improvements in longwall equipment and methods (Hunter, 1976). In France and other European countries, the devel¬opment of longwall mechanization has been similar in seams up to 2.44 m (8 ft) thick. In seams that exceed 9.14 m (30 ft), a variety of longwall caving has been developed for coal seams with dips of 0 to 1.6 rad (0 to 90°). Those with the greatest success will be discussed later. As noted, the development of longwall mining to its present state of the art has mainly taken place since World War II with substantial gains in the last ten years. Mechanized longwall has been the result of several re¬lated major innovations (Jackson, 1975) 1) Development of the flexible armored face con¬veyor which can be installed along the face and moved forward without disassembly. 2) Development of face machines such as single and double drum shearer and coal plows which operate in conjunction with the armored conveyors. 3) Development of self-advancing hydraulic roof supports which now include chocks, chock shields, and shields. 4) Reliance of caving of the immediate roof based on proper planning and development. 5) Use of pneumatic slowing to enable extraction below overbuilt areas. The most recent developments in the mining of coal by longwall in the US include the introduction of shield supports at Kaiser's York Canyon mine in New Mexico, single-entry longwall development at Kaiser's Sunnyside mine, and Mid-Continent's advancing longwall system in Colorado. Metal and nonmetal longwall systems in the US have included the mining of copper at White Pine, MI; uranium in Utah and New Mexico, and trona in Wyoming.

INTRODUCTION Today, raise drilling (boring) has become the stan¬dard method of raising throughout the Western world. It is estimated that the majority of raise footage com¬pleted in 1977 was accomplished by the raise drilling method. Extensive replacement of the drill and shoot system by mechanized raise drilling has occurred be¬cause users have recognized one or more of the follow¬ing advantages. In a direct cost per meter comparison, mechanized raise drilling is economically more attractive than drilling and shooting. Mechanized raise drilling offers improved personnel safety over the drilling and shooting method. Mechanized raise drilling is a faster and more predictable method for excavation than is drilling and shooting. The raise cost per unit of length becomes less as the raise length increases, offering greater flexibility in the overall design of mines. Mechanized raise drilling provides a substantial reduction in labor requirements. 6) Mechanized raise drilling improves the working environment. 7) Mechanized raise drilling improves the rock in¬tegrity of round, unblasted raises. Increasing acceptance of the raise drilling technique is enhanced by continuing equipment development. Today, a wide range of machines and capabilities is available, machine drive systems have been improved, reliability has been increased, and cutter technology is being improved quite rapidly. Table 1 lists the four major manufacturers of raise drilling machines, cutters, and reamers, together with the approximate number of machines that each company had in operation at the end of 1977. Although Reed and Smith are major suppliers of reamers and cutters, they do not manufacture the drilling machines. Four or five other relatively minor suppliers have built machines, reamers, and cutters for raise drilling, but they did not have a substantial num¬ber of machines in the field at the end of 1977. MACHINES FOR MECHANIZED RAISE DRILLING There are three principal arrangements for making machine-bored raises. They include the use of standard raise drills, reversible raise drills, and blind-hole or box¬hole raise drills. Standard Raise Drills The standard raise drilling machine is set up on one mine level or on the surface, and a pilot hole is drilled from that level or surface to a level below. When the pilot hole has been drilled, the raise then is reamed back from the lower level to the upper level or the surface. This arrangement is illustrated in Fig. 1. Reversible Raise Drills The reversible raise drilling machine is set up on a lower level of the mine, and a pilot hole is drilled up¬ward to a higher level. The raise then is reamed back from the upper level to the lower level. This arrange¬ment is illustrated in Fig. 2. The machines used for this type of raise drilling normally are capable of being used as standard raise drills. Blind-Hole or Boxhole Raise Drills The blind-hole or boxhole raise drilling machine is set up on a lower level of the mine, and a full diameter raise is bored to a higher level without the use of a pilot hole. This type of machine is illustrated in Fig. 3. Drill Recommendations If access to upper and lower mine levels is equal, the standard raise drill should be used. The complexity of the equipment and associated handling procedures for boxhole drilling far outweigh any mechanical advantage or reduction in the number of operations, provided that access to an upper level is available. If there is good access to a lower level but only limited access to an upper level, the use of a reversible raise drill should be considered. If there is no access to an upper level, a blind-hole or boxhole raise drill is the only practical mechanized system. MACHINE SELECTION There are six major considerations in selecting a machine for raise drilling. These include operating range, cutter loading, machine structure and main¬tenance, drill string configuration, drive system, and automated controls. Operating Range As shown in Table 2 and Figs. 4 through 6, raise drilling machines are available for a wide range of hole sizes. Standard raise drill ratings range from raises of 0.9 m (3 ft) diam and 120 m (400 ft) length up to raises of 3.5 m (12 ft) diam and 900 m (3000 ft) length. Boxhole raise drilling machines are available for raises ranging from 0.9 m (3 ft) to 2 m (6 ft) diam with lengths up to 90 m (300 ft). Table 2 lists, among other criteria, the torque and thrust of typical machines; torque and thrust are the main criteria for analyzing the capacity of a machine. The raise sizes shown in Table 2 assume a condition of medium hard to hard rock formations and optimum cutter loading. The recommended raise size for a given machine can be exceeded when raising softer rock formations or when the operator is willing to accept a lower level of performance; the performance is related directly to the 1093

For centuries small amounts of copper have been recovered from acid mine-drainage waters. In recent years, the expansion of copper-bearing waste dump leaching for copper recovery has established a technological basis that is rapidly converting the art of copper leaching' into a science. Leaching of copper, whether from copper-bearing ore or waste, follows well established chemical reactions. These reactions are commonly in an acid circuit, but where leaching of copper is to be made in rock that is a high acid consumer, ammonia and ammonia carbonate, as well as cyanide leach solutions, can be used effectively. Current hydrometallurgical processes are being applied at an ever increasing rate to recover the trace amounts of copper in copper mine waste by in-place leaching. Currently approximately 300, 000 tons of copper are produced annually in this manner where as recently as ten years ago, only one-eighth of this amount of precipitate copper was produced.. Where copper occurs as an oxide in higher concentrations as to be classified as an ore rather than waste, then the hydro-metallurgical processes are applied as percolation or agitation leaching in vats, pachuca tanks, or prepared heaps. This approach gives better control over the recovery of the leach solutions, particularly in the processes where ammonia or cyanide leaching agents are to be used.

Measuring the specific gravity of a pulp in concentrating plants is a relative, y simple procedure, but the desired accuracy is often difficult to attain. Many plants use the system of weighing a known volume of the pulp on a scale. In many cases, this method is quite accurate, but obtaining a true sample presents quite a problem. This is especially true when the pulp tends to froth, the solids settle rapidly, or the flow is fast at the point of sampling. There is also the problem of the operator neglecting to take the sample because of duties elsewhere, or, if everything Is apparently running smoothly, he assumes the pulp density is also all right. In 1952, the Pine Creek plant of Union Carbide Nuclear Company began working on a better method for measuring and controlling pulp density. After an extensive investigation of different methods for measuring the specific gravity of moving pulps, the Research Department decided that the bubble tube method appeared to be the simplest and most promising for our applications. It consists of two bubble tubes, of different lengths, submersed in a pulp. Low pressure air is supplied to, the two tubes through sight bubblers to maintain approximately equal volume of air to each bubble tube. The bubble tubes are also connected to a differential manometer, one to each side. Therefore, knowing the vertical distance between the outlets of the bubble tubes, the manometere can be calibrated to measure directly the specific gravity of the pulp. Ever since the industrial Revolution both major and small companies have put much emphasis on the use of incentives to compensate top management for extra effort and extra skill. For many years industries have also provided hourly rate employees with incentive plans. More recently incentive plans have been extended to include the "front line" supervisors. Many companies have what are called Christmas bonus or profit-sharing plans. The incentives for foremen in mining, which we shall discuss, differ from such bonus plans in that the incentives are paid on a definite measured performance for each individual, and thus directly reflect his effort and skill. What is the objective for paying incentives? The objective for any part of an industrial Engineering Program is to increase productivity and reduce unit cost. The unit cost must include the entire cost of the program. From what base do we start an incentive plan? One should think of art incentive program as the top rung of the Industrial Engineering ladder. Therefore, a company must take several steps before reaching this top rung. The remarks that follow are based substan¬tially on experience covering 45 years, 80% of which have been in placer work, rather than on a review of available literature. Most commercial placers have been deposited by the action of water. The richer and more-difficult-to-mine placers are those in the headwater areas where gradients are steepest. The most lucrative placers are generally in intermediate areas where volumes are greater, fewer boulders are present, and gradients are from 3% to 1 ½ . The higher volume, lower grade placers are in the lower reaches of river systems where gradients are lower. Where gold-bearing rivers have discharged into the sea, wave action can concentrate values on beaches, past and present.

Automatic tripper control systems can be reliable and as such are suitable for use in the mining industry. Proper application of fundamental engineering principles provides the means for the reliability. Some of the principles are: (1) Be sure the system designer designs a system that does the job operations people want done; (2) Use sound logic design practices to avoid internal electrical problems; (3) The design must be maintenance oriented; and (4) Use good quality components. I would like to discuss a tripper control installation at Kennecott Copper Corporation, Chino Mines Division, in Hurley, New Mexico, and how these principles apply to this tripper control system. First, however, I will expand on the principles to clarify just what is meant. First, "Be sure the system designer designs a system that does the job operations people want done.? Operator acceptance is often the key to the success or failure of an automatic control system. One of the best ways I know of to get operator acceptance is to give him a system that he wants. I don't mean to imply that if bad practices or procedures exist that they should be incorporated in the control system. I do think that many designers feel they haven't done their job if the control system doesn't do things drastically different than the old manual method. Good engineering principles dictate that the job should be done right and if the manual method was right it can very likely be right for the automatic method.

Derjaguin and Dukhin [1] were the first to develop a first-principle flotation model by considering the role of surface forces in bubble-particle interactions. According to the model, the ζ-potentials of particles constitute the energy barriers, E12, for particle (1)-bubble (2) interactions, which corroborates well with the observation that flotation recoveries reach maxima under conditions of zero-zeta potentials. In the present work, a series of surface force measurements were conducted for the quartz-dodecylamine hydrochloride (DAH) flotation system, for which detailed studies had been conducted by D.W. Fuerstenau [2], including the measurements of zeta-potentials, contact angles and collector adsorption as a function of pH.

The transportation of mine products incurs a cost which can have a significant bearing on the competitive position of the manufactured product. Clearly, the engineer who is responsible for selecting a mode of transport must base his decision, at least in large measure, on economic comparisons. And today, the engineer usually finds that he has to choose between several modes, including slurry pipelines. For the purpose of an initial economic screening, it is not necessary to go deeply into the technical details of a slurry system. What is usually needed, however, is a method with which the engineer can make a quick economic assessment to determine whether a slurry pipeline should be included in the detailed final analysis. This paper presents a rapid method for making such a preliminary appraisal. Experience with commercial slurry pipeline systems in several countries and with a variety of solid materials has shown that if several assumptions pertaining to critical design variables are made, it is possible to roughly estimate the transportation cost of a slurry system on the basis of only three factors: the specific gravity of the solid material, the length of the system, and the quantity of slurry to be pumped each year. It is assumed that conditions pertaining to field construction, corrosion inhibition, and the like, will be favorable. This assumption is critical because any factor which analysis shows to be particularly unfavorable will raise the total transportation cost estimate which this paper establishes. If the engineer employs this estimating procedure and decides that the use of a slurry pipeline is economically unattractive, his chances of being wrong are small. Conversely, if his quick appraisal indicates that the use of a slurry system is economically favorable, the engineer is justified in committing the time and money needed to make a more detailed investigation of the slurry pipeline potential.

Discussion by F.W. DeVries Comments on natural cyanide attenuation. The paper by Botz and Mudder in the November 2000 issue of Minerals and Metallurgical Processing had one disappointing aspect. Table 1 (p. 229) failed to include a significant species - neutral copper cyanide (CuCN). This compound has been most trouble-some in many plant-scale cyanide cleanup processes, includ- ing acidification-volatilization- reneutralization (AVR), hy- drogen peroxide cleanup and air/SO2 cleanup. It has also plagued many pilot efforts to use ion-exchange (IX) resin technology. This author elucidated the concept that, under some conditions, copper cyanide failed to precipitate out of treated effluents and appeared to exist as a filterable colloid that reported as copper and cyanide, with the latter measured as WAD (weak-acid-dissociable) cyanide in that analytical method. The concentrations measured were very near the levels of 0.2 ppm, often the regulatory limit for WAD cyanide. The copper concentration, using the 1 : 1 ratio for this com- pound, would then be more than 0.4 ppm, which could also be unacceptable. We discovered that it was unsafe to assume that the Cu(CN),- would surrender both cyanide ions simultaneously and allow cupric copper to be removed subsequently as, say, cupric ferrocyanide (Hatchett's Brown). This compound could be ignored as safely as the "iron blues," as essentially an inert solid, stable in geologic time if not exposed to sunlight. Under poorly controlled oxidation of the cyanocuprite ions (copper with four, three or two cyanides complexed to the copper), CuCN could well be formed and could not be assumed to precipitate out as a solid. The authors of the paper, by failing to include the CuCN species in their model, may have left users of the model prone to ignore the possible occurrence of the colloidal(?) form in the discharge, thus finding an effluent that failed to meet regulatory limits. (See addendum below.) This somewhat ephemeral material may well have been responsible for some large-scale failures of cyanide destruction technology to succeed at sites in North America and elsewhere. Two specific references alluding to this occurrence may be found: Griffiths et al., 1987, "The detoxification of gold-mill tailings with hydrogen peroxide," Journal of the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, September, p. 282. DeVries, 1989, "Improved understanding in detoxification of cyanide leach liquors using peroxide" Rand01 Gold Conference, Sacramento CA, p. 15 1. It is advisable for workers in this area of cyanide removal or recycle to avoid assuming that CuCN will, with certainty, precipitate out of solution, or that the dicyanocuprite ion will part simultaneously with both cyanide ions and allow cupric copper to be dealt with by other reactions. One further piece of work may be incomplete. That is, a definitive study of the long-term behavior of CuCN that does precipitate when exposed to other compounds present in neutralized tailings. Addendum. The extremely complex reaction of cupric ion on cyanide- which, of course, results in oxidation of cyanide to cyanate, probably through the intermediate stage of forming cyanogen [(CN)2] from oxidation of HCN with its hydrolysis to cyanate and cyanide ion - involves two cyanide moieties and the reduction of the cupric ion back again to the cuprous state. This, then, can form the CuCN potential "solid" that was already the undesirable species. In cyanide cleanup, with either air/SO2 or hydrogen peroxide, copper is generally employed as the catalyst, so it is unclear what happens when the CU(CN)2-1 is ultimately exhausted. In the course of the grinding experiments conducted at Climax over the past twenty years one interesting phenomenon was discovered. This was that balls made of certain types of steel grind more ore than some others. The most significant variation was found in the results secured with a hard alloyed forged bail compared with the forged carbon ball supplied by most ball manufacturers These findings were confirmed in many repeated controlled tests. The value of these tests depends on the methods used, the facilities available and the care with which the investigations were conducted. These are described in the following. This testing has largely been done in eight 91 x 81 low discharge ball mills in closed circuit with 7811 duplex screw classifiers. The mills run at 20 RPM on a feed approximately minus 3/8 inch. The ore is ground through 28 - 35 mesh in one stage. Each mill and auxiliary classifier is in a separate, parallel grinding and flotation section The, ore to each: section is the same in every particular and is fed to each mill bin from a common conveyor tripper. The ore from the bin to the ball mill is weighed on a conveyor scale. The power input to each mill motor is determined with a watt hour meter which measures the power to the mill motor only. Both the scales and meters are checked periodically by standard methods and have been found to give consistent readings. Automatic samplers are employed on each section to obtain accurate measurement of the size reduction. A size analysis of the classifier overflow is made each shift and a composite size analysis is obtained from a weighted average of the various shift analyses. The mills are driven by 450 horsepower synchronous motors so that there is no speed variation and shell liner age is kept as nearly the same as possible in mills under test. The same set of operators is assigned to a mill under test as to the control mill. In all other particulars such as ball load, mill density, liner design, etc., the mills are operated in precisely the same manner. This is an ideal arrangement for plant testing. From observations of ball mill performance over the past twenty years, it is the opinion of the operating staff that variations of as little as one to two percent in mill capacities may be determined if sufficient operating hours are devoted, to a test. Relations between mill capacities, fineness of grinds and power consumptions have been established with a high degree of accuracy. In Table I are given the figures for one test. These show that while the grind with the hard ball was slightly coarser, the tons ground per hour was 5.4 percent greater with the soft ball, and 6.1 percent greater on the basis of minus 100 mesh produced. The power consumed per ton with the hard ball was 4.4 percent greater on a tons per hour basis. The soft ball was inferior in wearing qualities and steel consumption per ton of ore was 24 percent greater with it. In this test the mills were charged with the two different balls for a period of three months to allow the ball loads to come to equilibrium. In Table II are given the specifications of the two balls. The difference in grinding rates may be accounted for by the nature of the ball surfaces. The surfaces of the soft balls after being worn a while are rougher to the touch. Enlarged photographs of the worn-in surfaces of hard and soft balls are shown in Figure I. These show the presence of scratches or skid marks on the hard ball surface which indicates less nipping effect. The Climax ore pulp has a pH of 6.0 and is in a dispersed state. The viscosity is low compared with most ores especially those that are conditioned with lime. This would lower the tendency of the pulp to adhere to the balls with a lower grinding efficiency as a result. It was also thought that the relative rates of wear from surface to center might affect the make-up of an equilibrium ball charge. This probably has little effect on capacity as shown by the size analyses of the two ball charges in Table III. This hypothesis was subsequently investigated by the use of rationed charges.  The paper combines theoretical and experimental analysis to improve the accuracy of predicting paste yield stress by slump flow. It derives an analytical model of slump flow for yield stress, providing a theoretical basis for quantifying the rheological properties of paste with slump flow. The study uses three different tailings-prepared pastes and constructs an empirical yield stress model, showing high accuracy and good generality.

I wish to register strong disagreement with the choices of drilling sites chosen by the Continental Scientific Drilling Committee, while endorsing the stated objectives. Of special significance is the lack of any site involving the metals most needed today in the US, while 9 to 13 km of drilling are allocated to gold and silver districts and 11 to 17 km to base metal (mainly copper) districts. Why is nothing proposed for platinum group or chromite? Is this because the committee did not know of such a site? If so, I offer such a site in California (see Fig. 1). The mineralization shown in Table 1 occurs in a large peridotite body in western Tehama County, CA. Petrography has demonstrated unequivocal evidence of migrated PGE deposited in peridotite and chromite of hypabyssal nature. Active diapirism (due probably to serpentine buoyancy) above a reactivated mantle to surface conduit marks the position of the conduit. Young explosion breccia cemented loosely by volcanic glass and tuff demonstrates the significance of the conduit as the prime source of the various emissions. Deep drilling could result in major metals discoveries as well as shedding light on the grand questions of platinum group mineralization. What role water has played in this occurrence is not yet certain; but chlorine and asphaltite have been detected in and adjacent to native PGM, suggesting a major role for water. The explosion breccia suggests that this excellent site could overlie entrapped geothermal steam.

INTRODUCTION Koolyanobbing is an open cut iron ore mine, which is located in Yilgarn region of Western Australia. To prevent the operators from suffering silicosis diseases and protect the air from being polluted, a series of dust control measures have been taken. These measures include ventilation and dust control system for sample preparation shed, dust collecting system for drill rig, dust suppression system for ore processing plant, dust control for haul road. The details related to individual dust control measure are dealt as follows. SAMPLE PREPARATION SHED DUST CONTROL The sample preparation is one of the major dust sources at Koolyanobbing. The activity is being carried out at the sample preparation shed. It typically needs to go through the following stages, that is, crushing, splitting, drying and pulverising. The amount of dust generated from crushing and splitting is mainly determined by the moisture content contained in the pre- pared sample. A significant amount of dust is generated at the sample pulverising stage due to cleaning sample bowl with com- pressed air. To protect the sample preparing personnel's health and make the dust level in the air meet the requirement from the health and safety authority, a central ventilation and dust control system has been installed at the sample preparation shed. As shown in Fig. l, the system consists of suction heads, suction lines, dust collector and vacuum fan. The fan creates vacuum environment in the system, therefore the dust is drawn into the dust collector through the suction heads and suction lines. The dust collector is of fabric filter. When the dusty air comes to the filter, the dust in the air is collected and retained on the surface of the filter while the clean air passes through and enters the atmosphere. The retained dust is blowed out by the pressured air pulses and deposits into the dust bin underneath the filter. A time relay device is used to control the cleaning time and the cleaning interval. DRILL RIG DUST CONTROL A hydraulic percussion drill is used to drill blast holes. To carry out the drilling operation properly and efficiently, the cut- tings are being flushed out of the hole by the compressed air. In order to prevent from the fine particles in the cuttings escaping to the air, a dust collector is attached to the drill. The collector mainly consists of suction head, cyclone and bag filter. Refer to Fig. 2. The suction head is installed at the lower end of the feed beams and is movable. The moving range is up to 250 mm. It is not only used to restrict the cuttings, but also used to prevent water from entering the filters when drilling wet hole. A 406 mm diameter primary cyclone is used to separate the heaviest particles in the cuttings. It is also used as blast holes sampling equipment. One part of the dust particles are collected by a sample bag through a splitter attached to the end of the cy- clone. The rest of the particles fall down to the ground through the closing rubber. The bag filter is driven by a hydraulic motor (1). It is used to collect the lighter particles in the cuttings. The filtering area is 16 m2 and the dust separation efficiency is up to 99.9%. The working principle of the filter is demonstrated in Fig. 3. When the rock drill (9) flushing is turned on, the pressurised air from the compressor is directed to the rock drill and to the pres- sure switch (10). The pressured air will open the pressure switch to de-energise and close the solenoid valve (4) The pressure affecting the cut-off cylinder (5) keeps the exhaust port flap open. When the flushing valve (8) is closed, the pressure affecting the cut-off cylinder disappears and the internal intake opening flap is closed by a spring. The pressure also ceases to affect the pressure switch and the spring switches the contact to the point 2. The time relay (11) is now activated and gives a 0.5 second current impulse to the solenoid valve and keeps the current cut off for approx 8 seconds. When the solenoid valve is live, it opens and lets an impulse of pressured air to the filters (2). These impulses will clean the filters.

During the past several years, more frequent reference to Wollastonite has appeared in print, both in this country and abroad. The reason for this is the apparent growing interest in this mineral as it approaches commercial maturity. Twelve years ago, wollastonite was available in only limited commercial quantity. In 1933, a deposit in California was worked for a short time to provide a calcium silicate raw .material for the manufacture of mineral wool* It was not until the spring of 1953 that Cabot Corporation put into operation a modem commercial plant to produce this material in a variety of grades. These grades covered both a range of particle size and of particle shape. At that time, applications for wollastonite were largely speculative, although a few commercial applications in glass frits and welding fluxes did exist, For all practical purposes, it was a new material for which few commercial uses had been fully proven.

Spontaneous combustion presents a very serious hazard to both safety and economics of mining operations. Notwithstanding considerable research that has been done over the years to present and control spontaneous combustion the risk still exists. Consequently, this problem poses a major challenge to mine safety researchers; new and improved techniques are constantly being developed to deal with this major hazard. This paper reviews the current practices to prevent and control spontaneous combustion in coal mine operations highlighting new developments in this area. Research and development work presently being carried out in Canada to' deal with this problem is also discussed which includes monitoring, inertization and application of biotechnology.

A simulation procedure has been developed that realistically portrays aggregate growth and disintegration for particular types of floc structures in water and wastewater treatment processes. The procedure requires local dissipation rates and specification of an interaction distance between colliding particles. A principal difficulty encountered in polymer flocculation, however, arises from changes in conformation of adsorbed macromolecules. Therefore, in systems where polymer flocculation occurs by bridging, dynamic changes in the particle size distribution depend upon the interaction of nonlinear. stochastic hydrodynamics with particles whose growth results from a number of concurrent and sequential random processes.
