Explanations for commodity price levels (or movements) commonly focus on the fundamentals of supply and demand otherwise they are simply assigned to speculative activity. Comparisons of metal-price histories to monetary and other economic data support the argument that the supply of and demand for money are no less important in the determination of price than are the supply and demand of the commodity itself. That these relationships should exist is evident in the price identity and they are consistent with monetary theory. The patterns developed have limited usefulness as predictors, but their recognition is essential for the construction of price scenarios for planning purposes.

Experiment shows that the microbial degradation of pyrite does not necessarily proceed stoichiometrically. Under some conditions sulfur is oxidized preferentially leaving something approaching iron in composition; under others, the pyrite is converted almost to elemental sulfur. A kinetic model for the process based on three elementary biochemical reactions can explain these observations. The diffusion of sulfur along grain boundaries and dislocations in the solid pyrite uncouples the oxidation rates of sulfur and iron from the requirements of stoichiometry. This mechanism also explains qualitatively why bacteria adsorb preferentially at dislocation sites on pyrite surfaces, why they form "pits" at these sites, and why amorphous pyrite is more readily degraded than pure crystals. The effect of pretreatment potential on the response of a gold electrode for Eh measurements in sulfide solutions was examined in terms of measured Eh values and electrode response time. The electrode response time is defined as the time required for the electrode to reach a steady-state value. The relationship between measured Eh values and the hydrosulfide ion concentration is established. The effect of pH, the reversibility of the gold electrode in the sulfide solutions, and the reproducibility of measurements are also investigated. A mixed potential theory is proposed to explain the observations.

Jim Walter Resources No. 4 mine produces coal through retreat longwall mining at 610 to 670 m (2000 to 2200 ft) of depth. A three entry, total yield pillar, longwall development experimental region was established for three adjacent longwall panels utilizing 6.1 m (20 ft) wide gate section pillars. Presently, the first longwall panel is completed with roadway deformational behavior monitored for a ground control assessment of the mining system. Data illustrate that the total yield pillar gate section design at No. 4 mine is presently comparable to gate section designs having large equal size chain pillars. Ground conditions will continue to be monitored during the mining of subsequent longwall panels in order to determine the ground control implications from multiple panel extraction.

The Premier mine has been in existence for over 75 years and is closely woven into the glamour of the history of South Africa. A note on the geological formation of the diamond pipe and the gabbro gives a clearer overall picture of the mine. Mining methods for operations above and below the gabbro sill are briefly discussed. Ventilation arrangements for mining above the sill are briefly described and possible ventilation arrangements for mining below the sill are discussed in more detail. Note: conversions to S.I. units are not exact as rounding has been done.

The very large quantities of energy used for size reduction in the minerals processing industry necessitate the accurate prediction of comminution machine power draw for optimum plant design. The JKMRC has developed effective models for predicting ball mill, autogenous mill, semi- autogenous mill and crusher power draw. When combined with comminution models they provide a powerful tool for evaluating not only the size reduction performance of a plant design, but its power utilization efficiency as well. This paper describes the structure of the mill and crusher power models. Data from a wide range of equipment types are presented which illustrate the accuracy of these models.

The creation of automatic methane concentration control systems presupposes the use, as a control factor, of the air rates in workings and in mine as a whole. These systems present a complicated set of computers and software, including as major components the following - systems for detecting methane concentration and air rate; - telemechanics systems; - programs and means of data processing; - programs and means of air rate control in workings and main fan capacity control. The paper analyses the experience of development and exploitation of automatic methane control system in gassy mines of the USSR Donetz coal basin. Much attention is given to the study of technological factors influence upon aerogasdynamic process using automatic methane control system.

A subsystem-based approach to the characteristic curves for a multiple fan ventilation system is presented. The ventilation variables and their relationships associated with a fan branch are considered as a subsystem of the multiple fan system. For each subsystem, the solution curve is generated by replacing the fan with a hypothetical pressure source or, alternatively, by adding a hypothetical pressure source without removing the fan. The projection of the solution curve onto the coordinate planes results in two classes of subsystem characteristic curves: pressure-vs.-quantity and quantity-vs.-quantity. The subsystem characteristic curves are described and illustrated through example ventilation systems. These curves are also discussed using the network equations of a general multiple-fan system.

Gold deposits of the Carlin Trend occur within sedimentary rocks deposited across the Paleozoic continental margin. Lithologically dissimilar units, juxtaposed along the Roberts Mountains Thrust Fault system, constitute three distinct stratigraphic packages: autochthonous miogeoclinal carbonates, allochthonous eugeoclinal siliciclastic rocks, and an overlying coarse clastic overlap assemblage. Gold deposits occur within all three stratigraphic packages, with economic concentrations localized at structural and stratigraphic settings similar to those which host petroleum traps. Along structural breaks, gold is selectively concentrated within favorable stratigraphic units. Host stratigraphy controls the character of the ore, including average grade, grade variability, physical properties and metallurgical response.

Rather than reiterate what is well known about the flotation of the non-sulfide minerals, emphasis has been placed on those separations which are not so effective. These difficult separations are largely connected with problems of selectivity in the flotation of the base metal oxides, the other slightly soluble minerals, the insoluble oxides and the naturally floatable minerals. The paper discusses possible methods of improving selectivity between similar species and of improving selectivity against the gangue minerals.

Although column flotation is known to be more effective than conventional flotation for cleaning fine coal, little attention has been paid to the considerable sulfur removal potential of this process. Whereas conventional flotation can only with difficulty remove pyritic sulfur from coal, flotation columns can make this separation readily due to their greater selectivity. This project has used a modified flotation column to remove pyrite from fine coal. This column has been shown to be capable of removing 70 to 85 percent of the pyritic sulfur from coal while recovering 80 to 85 percent of the total calorific value. However, the remaining pyrite is too finely disseminated to be readily removed by physical means. Currently, experimentation is in progress using bacterially-catalyzed dissolution of pyrite in acid solution to remove ultrafine pyrite and aid in the removal of coarser pyrite inclusions.

Aerodynamic stall of vane-axial fans is both an operational problem and a safety concern. While deep stall is relatively easy to detect, the diagnosis of a partial stall is often more difficult. Its transient nature and the fact that its symptoms can mimic electromechanical problems of the fan and fan drive assembly, or vice-versa, compound the difficulty of making a timely and accurate diagnosis. A knowledge-based expert system known as FANPRO has been developed to aid in the diagnosis of these problems. FANPRO and its application are the subject of this paper.

An empirical investigation was conducted to formulate a design criteria for predicting the beach profile of hydraulically deposited tailings. Field data were obtained from mining operations producing gold sulfides, silver, molybdenum, copper, platinum, and uranium. Site-specific parameters were collected that included the beach slopes, tailings soil properties, slurry properties, and the slurry distribution system characteristics. Each of the beach profiles were dimensionlessly plotted, and regression expressions were computed. It was determined that either a power expression or exponential expression closely predicted each beach slope. A general power expression and a general exponential ex¬pression were developed resulting in a design criteria. A procedure was formulated to determine which expression, power or exponential, is applicable to any specific site. A slope designation chart was developed as a function of the discharge, the tailings critical tractive shear stress, and the inertial forces exerted by the slurry on the beach.

More than two thousand abandoned mines within the Animas watershed in Southwestern Colorado are being prioritized for remediation by the Animas River Stakeholders Group (ARSG). Phased collection and assessment of information progressed from large scale to site specific. Prioritization was based on existing or potential environmental impact and technical feasibility of remediation as measured by dissolved Cd, Cu, and/or Zn in the discharge; indicators of habitat degradation; aquatic life in streams; cumulative impacts at the point of compliance; cost effectiveness; treatiblity/feasibility; and cultural and historic preservation.

Acquisition of coherent and representative data about the state of processes remains a major problem of process control. This paper proposes an approach that ensures coherence in measurements on an operational industrial process. The basic technique employed relies on balance equilibration of resource mass flow. An interesting particularity of the set up is the ease with which it can be adapted to check productivity or detect sensor failures. In the case of sensor failure, it suffices to examine the evaluations before and after balance equilibration. The algorithm was tested by means of computer simulation using data from an industrial metallurgical flowsheet.

Pioneering work with pilot scale autogenous grinding started in Boliden 1956. From 1961 to 1991 eleven fully autogenous grinding (AG) circuits have been installed at various concentrators within the Boliden company. A compact two-stage grinding system was de- signed in the beginning of 1970s. The system included a pebble extractor which feed the secondary grinding stage with grinding media. The APC grinding system (Autogenous/Pebble/Crusher) is a further development of the AG concept. A new design of the Boliden pebble extractor together with improved control strategy make the performance of the APC system suitable to almost any ore quality. The Boliden AG concept is probably the most cost efficient grinding system of today.

In an interdisciplinary research effort at West Virginia University, the Mine Management Support System (MMSS) is being developed as a window-based shell that may be used for the integration of a myriad of applications software. A number of integral components that focus on enhancing operational decision making are being developed as well. MMSS includes a flexible and robust work scheduling system that assigns the "best," qualified workers to the highest priority jobs on a shift while considering many practical and dynamic parameters affecting the assignments. A consultation system has been developed to help solve operating problems using management-preferred responses and the latest available information on operations.

Belt turnovers are commonly used in conveyors to rotate the belt so that the clean side of the belt contacts the return idlers. The belt turnover length has traditionally been sized on only the twisting stresses. However, belt turnovers are also subjected to bending stresses due to the weight of the belt. Although bending stresses have in the past been ignored, these stresses are significant and should not be neglected. This paper quantifies and presents a method for calculated twisting and bending stresses and also the belt sag.
