Curiously enough, considering the relative accessibility of the two places, coal was reported at an earlier date in Saskatchewan than in British Columbia. Henry and Thompson were on the Saskatchewan River in February 1811, and on the 4th of that month recorded, while on Jack's Branch of North Brook, "I observed in one of the bends on the north side a bank of yellow clay, on which there appeared several horizontal veins of pure coal, of the best quality I have seen along this river." Later at Rocky Mountain House it was said: "a quantity of coal is tumbling into the water, as the current washes away the earth underneath. This coal abounds along the Saskatchewan, in some places forming solid beds several feet thick for several acres, which are washed by the river. In its pure state our smiths use it for the forge with equal proportions of charcoal made of birch or aspen, which answers every purpose for making and repairing our axles and other tools."1 It is needless to say that it was many years before this coal was used for any commercial purposes. Coal was first found on the northern end of Vancouver Island in British Columbia in 1835 at Beaver Harbor, where later Fort Rupert was established, where Indians had advised some of the Hudson Bay Company officials it would be found.2 The coal was used by smiths, and later on by the steamer plying along the coast.3 A report to the government in 1845 called attention to the coal reported in the neighborhood of Puget Sound and on the Cowlitz River, and that probably the samples used by the Hudson's Bay Company were obtained from the surface and. were not good. On September 7, 1846 a report on the coal situation was submitted by Ogden and Douglas, and a naval vessel was sent to investigate the report and was loaded with 62 tons dug out by the Indians, the seam outcropping along the shore.2 In 1847 some samples were sent to England by a returning war vessel. California's outstanding contribution to unit operation is the plan of development now established for the North dome of the Kettleman Hills. Beginning April 1, 1931, the Kettleman North Dome Assn. will control the unified operation and development of 10,800 acres of proven and semiproven oil land, and at the same time the Standard Oil CO. of California will operate as another unit its fee land of 9460 acres of similar character. The holdings of the two companies are in a checkerboard mile-square pattern. In addition to this, 410 acres of land may yet be included in the Kettleman North Dome Assn. unit and 530 acres of land are definitely out of both units. The owners of some of this land have expressed their intention of cooperating in a reasonable way with these two units. Cooperative agreements are now in force as to most of this field. Under the definitions of a unit pool and a near-unit pool,' the operation at Kettleman Hills will be a near-unit operation, but because of the size of the structure and its proven highly productive character, the arrangement. concluded on Jan. 31, 1931, in the approval of the Kettleman North Dome Assn. Agreement by Secretary of the Interior Ray Lyman Wilbur and by California State Oil and Gas Supervisor R. D. Bush is of outstanding importance to the entire oil industry. No other major unit operation plans are under way in California at the present time. There has been some little discussion of a plan in the North Belridge field and a feeling that the discovery of oil in the Lost Hills field and also in the South Belridge field would necessitate consideration of unit plans. So few data are available for these areas, as to the land that should be included in such unit plans, that little constructive action is now possible. The beginning of drilling on the Middle dome of the Kettleman Hills also makes it an area deserving consideration for unit operation. All four of the above-named areas lie on the west side of the San Joaquin Valley, in Kings and Kern counties, to the south of the

The Mines Operating Co.'s plant at Park City, Utah, was designed to treat the low-grade fillings in the old stopes of the Ontario mine. These fillings carry 6 to 14 oz. of silver, 1 to 2 lb. of copper, 0.01 to 0.015 oz. of gold, and a small percentage of lead and zinc. The treatment consists in mixing the crushed ore with coal dust and salt and then roasting in a new type of furnace by combustion of the contained fuel. The roasted ore is leached with an acid salt solution to dissolve the silver, gold, copper, and lead. At present these metals are precipitated together on scrap iron and the product sold to a refinery. The only new feature of importance in this scheme of treatment is the roasting process, which makes possible the chloridizing of ores without any loss of the valuable metals, and at a very low cost. History of the Development of the Process The roasting process- had its beginning in connection with research work at the Utah State School of Mines. N. C. Christensen, Jr., who held one of the School of Mines' fellowships, was engaged in some experimental work on blast roasting. At the same time I was doing some work on the insoluble gold in Mercur base ores. Mr. Christensen roasted some of this base gold ore in his pot furnace, and found that when he mixed a sufficiently low percentage of fuel with the ore, it did not sinter but roasted to a leachable product. We considered this a new application of blast roasting, and proceeded to test out a large number of ores in several different types of small roasters which we constructed.. This experimental work continued well into the summer of 1911. In August, 1911, the Consolidated Mercur Gold Mines Co. installed a small roaster of our design, which we proposed to operate on the counter-current principle, feeding mixed ore continuously on top, and at the same time drawing off the roasted ore from the bottom. IT is known'" that secondary recrystallization occurs in copper sheet with at least 90 pct reduction after annealing at high temperatures, 700" to 1000°C. Turkalo and Turnbull4 have found recently that secondary recrystallization might occur even after annealing at such low temperatures as 500°C for a high purity, coarse-grained copper sheet. It will be shown in the following that in an electrolytic tough pitch copper wire, with a high degree of deformation, secondary recrystallization might occur at even lower temperatures. A hot-rolled rod of 9.5 mm diam (temperature at which rolling commenced was 850°C) was drawn in continuous drawing machines to 0.4 mm, corresponding to a cross-section reduction of 99.8 pct. The texture in the center of the wire (the sample for X-ray analysis was etched to 0.15 mm diam) is a mixture of the [111] and the [loo] direction, as can be seen from Fig. 1. This is in accordance with the result of Schmid and Wassermann.' After a few minutes annealing of the wire at 200 °C, there is a noticeable recrystallization of the structure with a preferred orientation in the [l00] direction at the expense of the [Ill] deformation texture, as Figs. 2 and 3 show. Farnham and OINeill" reported a similar result. The final recrystallized structure shows mainly the [loo] orientation. There is however a small amount of [111] and random orientations. If the wire is annealed at 400°C, the recrystallized structure first shows a [loo] texture, Fig. 4, but as the annealing time is increased the fine-grained structure transforms into coarse grains, Fig. 5, giving a new preferred orientation, Fig. 6. The calculations show this to correspond to the [I121 direction. Even if the annealing that gives the primary recrystallization is carried out for six weeks at 20O°C, the same secondary recrystallization texture is obtained if the annealing is continued at 400°C. A PROCESS that has come to be known locally as "multistage stabiliza-tion" has been developed in the Haft Kel field of the Anglo-Iranian Oil Co. in southwest Iran, for the recovery of casinghead gasoline. It con-sists in releasing the dissolved gases from the crude by stages, a practice common in many fields, but which, so far as is known, has nowhere been carried to the extent to which it is employed in Iran. It has been in use there for nearly nine years, during which time some 200 million barrels of crude have been handled by the process. This process of gasoline retention consists in preventing the greater part of the casinghead gasoline hydrocarbons (the butanes and pentanes) from ever leaving the crude, instead of allowing them to be vaporized and then recovered from the lighter gases by the usual compression or absorption processes. Its efficiency is fully equal to that obtained by the absorption process; its disadvantage is that it increases the quantities of ethane and propane in the crude sent to the refinery, but with the growing demand for propane this drawback is vanishing. When casinghead gasoline is recovered as a separate liquid in the Iranian fields, it is blended with the crude, as the only outlet is through the refinery, and the crude-oil pipe line offers the cheapest means of transportation. It is under these conditions that the retention of the butanes and pentanes in the crude by multistage stabilization is a most attractive process, possessing as it does the following advantages: (1) extreme simplicity, (2) low first cost, (3) easy installation, (4) practically 100 per cent operating-time efficiency, (5) no operators required, (6) no water or other services required, (7) negligible maintenance, (8) once established, very little routine testing is necessary. The one essential for reasonably efficient multistage stabilization is that the flowing pressures of the wells should be relatively high; i.e., they should not be less than about one-third the saturation pressure of the crude in the reservoir. This is a very general statement, of course, and much depends on the type of crude and its temperature.

Several investigators1-8 have reported evidence of the existence of native or connate water in oil-and-gas-bearing strata. Both water and salt have been detected in cores of oil sands that yielded oil and gas exclusively when produced. Electrical logs often reveal unexpectedly low resistivity through oil and gas sands, indicating the presence of some material that is a considerably better conductor of current than oil and gas. Furthermore, calculationsg of the oil and gas content of reservoirs based upon production and reservoir-pressure decline data indicate appreciably lower values than are arrived at under the assumption that the pore space is occupied completely by oil and gas. Origin and Occurrence of Connate Water in Oil-and-gas-bearing Formations The view has been expressed, 10-15 and is generally agreed upon, that the expulsion of oil and gas material from source beds and the subsequent migration and accumulation occurred in the presence of salt water. As the strata that usually form reservoirs for oil and gas were laid down by, or in the presence of, ancient seas, the pore space within the strata must have been saturated with salt water before the entrance of the oil and/or gas. Thus, the accumulation of oil and/or gas in the upper regions of structures suitable for reservoirs must have required displacement of the connate water therefrom. In the absence of any forces other than gravitational, it would be expected that the displacement of the connate water out of the zones finally occupied by gas and oil would be complete, and that the vertical distribution of gas, oil, and water in a reservoir would be strictly in the order of their densities. Apparently, however, surface and interfacial forces that will not permit complete segregation of the fluids are active within the capillary spaces comprising a reservoir. The effects of these forces on both accumulation and production of oil and gas have been the subject of study by a number of investigators.16-37 In general, the view is held that the character of most materials that make up the reservoir rock leads to preferential wetting of the rock by

It is usually assumed that the rate-determining step in the migration of a grain boundary involves the thermally activated transfer of single atoms across the interface. Chemical reaction rate theory then gives a migration rate which is proportional to the driving force when this is small compared to kT.1 In their recrystallization studies on aluminum, Gordon and vandermeer2 obtained data which was capable of providing the first experimental test of this proportionality. They correlated stored energy (driving force) release measurements determined calorimetrically with fraction recrystal-lized kinetic (growth rate) data acquired metallo-graphically at a temperature where a significant amount of recovery takes place concurrently with recrystallization. Within experimental error, the results of Gordon and Vandermeer confirmed experimentally, at least over a limited range, the linear dependence of boundary migration (growth) rate on driving force in accordance with theory. In obtaining these results, however, an incorrect, implicit assumption was made in relating the average instantaneous growth rate of the recrystallized grains to the measured fraction recrystallized kinetic data. The purpose of this present note is to point out and correct this assumption. An alternate approach, whereby a more proper average growth rate can be calculated from the recrystallization kinetic data, is presented. The earlier data, reevaluated in terms of this new approach, show the same general trend as before so that the original conclusion of Gordon and vandermeer2 is still valid. As was shown in a detailed study3 of the geometrical features of recrystallization in aluminum, the colonies of recrystallized grains can be regarded as uniform cylinders embedded in a three-dimensional matrix, the number of such colonies being constant. Thus during the early stages of recrystallization the volume fraction recrystallized, Xv, can be written as Xv=ynvlr2 [l] where y is a shape factor and i and r are defined as the average length and radius of a recrystallized colony and are spatial averages over the specimen. -nv, is the number of such colonies in a unit of volume. ZONE refining, as developed by W. G. Pfann,1 has been used extensively for the purification of semiconductors. This method has made it possible to obtain the extremely high purity material necessary for the transistor industry. It has also been utilized to some extent for the purification of relatively low-melting-point metals. However, very little attention has been given to reactive, high-melting-point materials, with the exception of silicon. For this element, it has been necessary to use the floating zone technique in order to avoid contamination from the crucible containing the melt. The method is one in which a narrow molten zone is formed in a vertical rod by induction heating. The molten zone is supported between the two solid sections of the rod by surface tension. It is then moved longitudinally along the rod in order to effect a redistribution of solute. This technique has an advantage over the horizontal boat method, since crucible contamination is avoided. It has the disadvantage of being a much more difficult technique than zone refining in a crucible. Furthermore, it is necessarily a slow process, since only one zone at a time can be formed. However, the floating zone process offers a means of obtaining high-purity metals that are either not available, or can only be obtained in powder or pellet form as the result of complex chemical or electrochemical methods. It should be emphasized that the process is not effective in removing all impurity elements. Those that cannot be redistributed in an ingot during zone melting must be removed by some other means. Very little is known of the prope~ties of very high purity reactive metals such as iron, titanium, zirconium, beryllium, etc. It is quite likely that trace elements in such metals can affect their properties drastically. Therefore, one of the primary objectives of this work is to study the properties of metals which have been obtained in the purest form available and then zone refined. AMONG the various metals with low specific gravity, two, aluminum and magnesium, are used in the nearly pure state or as bases for light-weight alloys. Although the production of magnesium is only about one-twenty-fifth that of aluminum, a higher percentage of its output is used in the transportation industry than that of any other metal. The per-centage varies from year to year but, on the average, more than three-fourths of the magnesium production has been used for this purpose. In the United States, about 40 per cent of the aluminum production is used for transportation purposes. It seems obvious that equipment demanding repeated movement with need for rapid acceleration and deceleration should be as light in weight as the economics of engineering materials will permit. There are, however, differences of opinion with reference to both the economics and the engineering aspects of this subject. Tables 1 to 7 inclusive relate to the principal light-metal materials currently used in the transportation industry. These, with the accom-panying titles and footnotes, are in the main self-explanatory. Although the variations in mechanical properties can be easily seen from the tables, it should be kept in mind that the values given are for ordinary tempera-tures and that the changes in properties with temperature are not the same for the different alloys. Also, the corrosion properties cannot be deduced accurately either from the compositions or from the physical properties. Again, certain of these alloys are used because they possess desirable combinations of properties not listed in tine tables, including heat conductivity, coefficient of expansion, machinability, ease of casting or working, light reflectivity, anodic coating characteristics, etc. These, together with variations in prices, must be given careful analysis to effec-tively utilize the light alloys. Some of the alloys listed in the tables are new and some are old, but all are standard. Even the older alloys are available in new shapes and larger sizes than heretofore, and all are used in the transportation industry in structures of new design. Certain of the applications of specific alloys will be touched upon in the following brief history of the use of the light metals in transportation.

MessiteR, New Pork City (communication to the Secretary*):—Under the heading " Flues," Mr. Edwards refers to the Bee-hive construction, a cross-section of which is shown in Fig. 4 of his paper. A flue similar to this was designed by me about six years ago,' in which the walls though much thinner than those described by Mr. Edwards gave entire satisfaction. These walls, from 2.25 in. thick throughout in the smaller flues, to 3.25 in. in the larger, were built by plastering the cement mortar on expanded-metal lath without the use of any forms, or cribs, whatever, at a cost of labor generally less then $1 per sq. yd. of wall. Of course, where plasterers cannot be obtained on reasonable terms, the cement can be molded between wooden forms, though it is difficult to see how it can be done with an interior core only as stated by Mr. Edwards. In regard to the effect of sulphur dioxide and furnace-gases on the cement, I have found that, in certain cases, this is a matter which must be given very careful attention. Where there is sufficient heat to prevent the existence of condensed moisture inside of the flue, there is apparently no action whatever on the cement, but if the concrete is wet, it is rapidly affected by these gases. At points near the furnaces there is generally sufficient heat not only to prevent internal condensation of the aqueous vapor always present in the gases, but also to evaporate water from rain or snow falling on the outside of the flue. Further along, a point is reached where rain-water will percolate through minute cracks caused by expansion and contraction, and reach the interior, even though internal condensation does not occur there in dry weather. From this point to the end of the flue the roof must be coated on the outside with asphalt paint or other impervious material. In very long flues a point may be reached where moisture will condense on the inside of the malls in cold weather. From this point to

IN view of the circumstance that very few important changes have been made within the last 15 or 20 years in the equipment of rod and wire mills, the description of a new process introduced by Grenville Mellen, of Llewellyn Park, N. J., to take the place of the present laborious system of producing rods of lead, zinc, brass, copper, aluminum, etc., may be interesting to members of the Institute. This new process consists in the production of cast rods at one operation in a small continuous casting machine. The hot liquid metal is transferred from the melting crucibles directly into an endless chain of mold blocks in the machine, where solidification takes place, and the rod comes out continuously in a solid form at one end as long as the molten metal is supplied. The operation of these mold blocks so as to produce a solid rod of uniform structure constitutes an important part of Mr. Mellen's invention. The machine (Figs. 1 and 2), 12 ft. in height over all, 2 by 3 ft. in horizontal- cross-sectional area, and 6,000 11). in weight, has a framework of cast iron, holding in position two endless chains of mold blocks, which are made in sections and join in center alignment. The mold orifice is made up of these mold sections, into which the liquid metal flows. The molding chains are composed of steel blocks, grooved on one face to form the molding cavity, and linked together with flexible joints. Each block is carried on four rollers which guide the chain around the end sprockets and carry it in its course through the machine. The accuracy of alignment requisite to the production of a perfect rod in the mold groove formed by these sections is secured by careful machine work, and by building the four ways, down which the alignment takes place, so that two of the sides are fixed permanently, while the opposite sides are held to their position by spring pressure. The guides carrying the molds, while in casting position, are water-cooled square tubes.

LITHIA compounds have a place in pharmaceutical and other chemical industries and lithium minerals in glassmaking and ceramics. The metal, although rare, is used to a minor extent in alloys. During the nearly 50 years of production of lithium minerals in the United States, the silicate mineral spodumene has continued as the chief source of raw material for the manufacture of lithium salts. Although twice as much lepidolite, a lithium mica, has been mined, most of it has been used in the making of certain types of glass. Amblygonite has been an additional but minor source of lithium compounds. Triphylite, petalite, and zinnwaldite have also been utilized in the past. All of these commercial lithium minerals contain low percentages of lithium (Table 1). In 1938, a new raw material for manufacture of lithium compounds made its appearance. This product was crude dilithium sodium phosphate (Li2NaPO4), obtained as a by-product of manufacture of potash and soda chemicals from the brine of Searles Lake, California. Searles Lake, which is now dry, lies in the extreme northwest corner of San Bernardino County, California, and consists of a large mass of salts. It was estimated by the United States Geological Survey that the crystal body contained about 25 pct voids, which are filled with a saturated brine. The brine consists mainly of the sulphates, chlorides, carbonates, and borates of sodium and potassium. Several other acid radicals, including phosphates, are present. Lithium is present in the brine in an amount corresponding to 0.01 15 pct Li2O. In the course of evaporation of water from the brine, during the process of manufacture of sodium and potassium chemicals, dilithium sodium phosphate crystallizes out and is recovered by a flotation operation. The lithium concentrate is filtered and dried and is then ready for shipment. It analyzes from 19 to 21 pct Li2O and now constitutes the highest known grade of crude lithium material. It is and will continue to be a major source of lithium for manufacture of lithium products. Many attempts have been made to develop a relation between the tensile properties and the deep-stamping qualities of metals commonly used in deep drawing. These operations are generally performed cold and the metal is always stressed beyond the elastic limit. However, the problem cannot be readily solved without a proper investigation of: (1) the relation between actual stress and actual strain in the plastic range and (2) the stresses that are set up in the metal during the process of deep stamping. Much work has been done in recent years to add to our knowledge on plastic deformation of metals and the shortcomings of the ordinary tensile test, particularly in the plastic range, have been sufficiently recognized. It has been widely acknowledged that the local contraction, which appears in a tensile test after the maximum load is reached, is not a general characteristic of the material but is peculiar to this form of testing. The plastic deformation of materials is explained by the slip of their crystals along certain planes and this rearrangement should be similar whether observed in a tensile, compression or torsion test, and if the results of any of these forms of testing show deviations, it must be due to other influences, as for example the local contraction in a tensile test. For this reason the tensile-test curve as obtained from the measurements taken on a tensile-test machine or registered by an autographic device has been supplemented by the so-called "actual stress-strain curve," which is constructed from the observed tensile-test data by eliminating the effect of local contraction and is in complete alignment with the stress-strain values obtained in a compresison or torsion test. The actual stress-strain curve shows the increase of actual unit stress in relation to unit elongation beyond the yield point and beyond the point of maximum load and indicates clearly the extent of strain-hardening which the ordinary tensile-test curve does not reveal. The purpose of this paper is to present some data and comparisons regarding three types of Rheolaveur plants washing bituminous coal from the Pittsburgh seam. It deals only with the sections that handle coarse coal. The Rheolaveur system consists of launders or troughs in which coal and its associated impurities are conveyed by water. The impurities. being heavier than the coal, settle toward the bottoms of the launders and are drawn off through specially designed openings called Rheo boxes. Fundamentally, each plant consists of straight-sided, flat-bottomed launders of varying width and length, each launder equipped with one or more Rheo boxes for the removal of high-grauity fractions of the feed that are undesirable in the cleaned coal. Each launder has at least two longitudinal sections, the first with a slope of from 11/2 to 4 in. per foot of length, called the classification section. The single-box launder has a classification section followed by a washing section ahead of the box. A two-box launder is a single-box launder followed by a washing section and a second box. The slope of the washing section between the first and second boxes is determined to some extent by tonnage. At the end of the classification section, which may. vary from 8 to 15 ft. in length, the slope abruptly flattens out to a slope of from 92' to 1 in. per foot of length. This flatter section of the launder, called the washing section, may vary from a few feet, in a single-box launder, to 15 ft., in a two-box launder. Raw coal entering the head end of what we choose to call the "primary" launder or launders is pushed down the classification section by a stream of water entering the head end of the launder with the coal. As it strikes the washing section, of lower pitch, the velocity of flow is retarded and the heavier particles of slate, pyrite, bone, etc., take their places on the bottom and are drawn off as they pass over the Rheo boxes. The widespread interest shown during the past year in the study of subsurface pressures warrants brief reference to its early development. Though it is impossible to set an exact date when constructive thinking on the subject first began, nevertheless, evidence is available that thought was given to the problem as far back as 16 or 1.7 years ago. There is record in one of the foreign journals of actual subsurface tests made by crude methods in one of the Rumanian fields in 1918 and 1919.' These tests were performed in conjunction with studies made on wells produced by bailing and, incidentally, the final outcome of the work led to the development of the so-called "duplex bailer" which is reputed to have trebled volumetric bailing efficiency. From this time on to 1927 a few scattered bottom-hole pressure determinations were made with makeshift instruments of one form or another, but probably not until 1927 was any great amount of concerted effort directed to the subject. At this fall meeting of the Petroleum Division four years ago was presented one of the first papers2 to appear in this country written for the express intent of advocating the value and importance of subsurface pressure determinations. It is thought to have been the first to present direct data on subsurface pressures obtained through the use of a specially designed recording instrument. As might be expected, the instrument had its limitations, but reasonably accurate results were obtained and, to say the least, it constituted a progressive step in the right direction. During the period from 1927 to 1931, many noteworthy improvements were made in the design and perfection of subsurface pressure instruments suitable to meet all conditions. Because of the magnitude of this task much credit is due the men who pioneered this work. They should feel a keen sense of satisfaction in the thought that their efforts have paved the way for the continuation of this most valuable study. THE Achotla mill of the Cia. Minera de Pe[n]oles is of special interest in that it is one of the few still employing the chloridization process. The ore milled comes from the Suriana mine and consists of both oxide and sulphide, from neither of which can the gold or silver be extracted by a simple cyanide treatment. The mill was built in 1927, after several years of study in the development of the process1, and operated from December of that year until October 1930. Operations were resumed in February 1935, and have been continuous since, treating approximately 5000 tons per month, while the mine is getting up to full tonnage of 6500 tons per month. Transportation Of Supplies The property is in Guerrero, Mexico, some 175 km. by airline southwest of Mexico City. The mill site is at Temisco (Fig. I), 8 km. from the Balsas River and 4.8 km. by aerial tram from the mine. At Temisco are the general office, shops, warehouses and laboratory serving both mine and mill. Here sufficient water is available either from a small creek running through the property or from the Balsas River, also convenient and ample storage space for the tailings. With the exception of the mine timber and a few native building materials which may be obtained locally, all supplies for both mine and mill are brought down the Balsas River from Balsas, the terminal of a Mexican National Railway line out of Mexico City. The method of transportation on the river is interesting. Rapids with very fast water are numerous, prohibiting the use of mechanically propelled boats. Those used resemble large, flat-bottomed rowboats some 22 ft. long by 8 ft. wide (Fig. 2). They are manned by two oarsmen sitting in the bow, each handling one large oar, and usually another man in the stern who, with his oar, assists in steering the boat, especially when the rapids are run. The purpose of this paper is to present some data and comparisons regarding three types of Rheolaveur plants washing bituminous coal from the Pittsburgh seam. It deals only with the sections that handle coarse coal. The Rheolaveur system consists of launders or troughs in which coal and its associated impurities are conveyed by water. The impurities. being heavier than the coal, settle toward the bottoms of the launders and are drawn off through specially designed openings called Rheo boxes. Fundamentally, each plant consists of straight-sided, flat-bottomed launders of varying width and length, each launder equipped with one or more Rheo boxes for the removal of high-grauity fractions of the feed that are undesirable in the cleaned coal. Each launder has at least two longitudinal sections, the first with a slope of from 11/2 to 4 in. per foot of length, called the classification section. The single-box launder has a classification section followed by a washing section ahead of the box. A two-box launder is a single-box launder followed by a washing section and a second box. The slope of the washing section between the first and second boxes is determined to some extent by tonnage. At the end of the classification section, which may. vary from 8 to 15 ft. in length, the slope abruptly flattens out to a slope of from 92' to 1 in. per foot of length. This flatter section of the launder, called the washing section, may vary from a few feet, in a single-box launder, to 15 ft., in a two-box launder. Raw coal entering the head end of what we choose to call the "primary" launder or launders is pushed down the classification section by a stream of water entering the head end of the launder with the coal. As it strikes the washing section, of lower pitch, the velocity of flow is retarded and the heavier particles of slate, pyrite, bone, etc., take their places on the bottom and are drawn off as they pass over the Rheo boxes. Our entry into the World War suddenly brought home to us in a startling way the vital importance of manganese. Since the war, much has been written and said upon the subject of manganese and a great deal of time and money have been spent in attempts to find an adequate substitute for this metal in the manufacture of steel; none has been found. It is true that ways are known by which it is possible to make small amounts of good steel without manganese, but taking into consideration the diminishing quality of iron ores and fuels as well as the increasing exaction of specifications for finished products, it may safely be assumed that, high-grade manganese ore will be more and more a necessity in the production of steel as time goes on. Taking world resources as a whole it may be well to point out that the problem of obtaining needed supplies of manganese from a strictly commercial viewpoint is now less serious than it was before the war. Formerly it was feared that world resources of high-grade manganese ore might be exhausted in a relatively short time, but, largely as a result of the stress laid upon the importance of manganese during the war, the world's available supply of high-grade manganese ore has been greatly augmented by new discoveries and fuller development of previously known deposits. Sources of Production Russia alone, of countries producing the major part of the world's stee1, has within its geographical boundaries sufficient manganese to supply its needs. The domestic production of England is inadequate and English requirements for high-grade manganese are supplied principally from India. France also draws largely upon India, as it depends upon foreign sources of supply except with respect to a small tonnage of silico-manga-nese and silico-spiegel produced in the Hautes-Pyrénées. Germany and the United States likewise depend upon foreign sources of high-grade ore, though each possesses comparatively large reserves of ferruginous manganese ore and manganiferous iron ore. At present the world demand for high-grade manganese ore is met with ease by the production of Russia, India, Gold Coast and Brazil.

An investigation of the problem of separating two minerals by a moving inclined plane has revealed that only minerals with considerable difference in sliding friction coefficients separate readily; that it is possible to separate two minerals when only one of them has a rolling friction coefficient; that difference in geometrical shape of the minerals is important to separation which improves as grain size increases; and that the thickness of the stream falling on the belt influences the grade of separation - the thinner the stream, the smaller the interference between the grains of the minerals to be separated and the higher the degree of separation. The problem of separating two minerals with different friction coefficients and shapes by a moving inclined plane has been investigated. Friction separators can be used to separate two materials that differ in shape and in friction coefficient. 1,3 Gladkov has presented some theoretical aspects of using a moving plane to clean corn and podded seeds; this method, however, did not result in practical application. When considering the separation of minerals, only those with considerable difference in sliding friction coefficients can be taken into account. Furthermore, it is possible to separate two minerals when only one of them has a rolling friction coefficient. The difference in geometrical shape of two minerals is also important to separation. It has been found that the separation of two minerals improves as the grain size increases. For example, coal and slate over 2 in. in grain size separate much better than materials of smaller grain size. As Table I indicates, the slate grains smaller than 25 mm gradually lose their flat shape with decreases in size and are more rounded than larger grains, which are almost flat. The smallest grains of slate in first and second fractions slide down the belt since their friction coefficients decrease and approach the value of the rolling coefficient. The percentage of separation of the first fraction is, therefore, low. Thickness of the coal stream falling on the belt also influences the grade of separation; the thinner the stream, the smaller the interference between the grains of the two minerals to be separated and the higher the degree of separation.

Certain observations from the field and laboratory suggest the need for recasting some of our ideas about gypsum as a rock-forming mineral and in relation to supplies for industrial use. Until about 25 years ago, the use of gypsum was confined almost entirely to agriculture. During the past quarter century, though, its usefulness has been greatly developed, particularly in the building trades, which now absorb most of the gypsum produced. In 1919, according to the U. S. Geological Survey, the output of crude gypsum was 2,240,163 tons, a gain of 912 per cent. in 25 years. About one-half of this production was mined in New York, Ohio, and Michigan, where the proved supplies can hardly be regarded as over-large when viewed in relation to the rapid expansion of industrial requirements. The occurrence of gypsum in the United States is treated by R. W. Stone and others.' The deposits of Canada are described by L. H. Cole. Several states, including Kansas, Oklahoma, Iowa, Michigan,and New York, have made special surveys of their gypsum deposits, but the reports, as a rule, refer to conditions as they existed from 15 to 20 years ago. Association of Gypsum and Anhydrite The two calcium sulfate compounds, gypsum (CaSO4.2H2O) and anhydrite (CaS04), are the more stable forms of a series which includes at least two other members, so-called half-hydrate (CaSO4.1/2H20) and soluble anhydrite (CaS04). Each of the latter readily takes up water to recrystallize as gypsum and consequently is incapable of existence under ordinary geological conditions; also each can be prepared from gypsum by the application of heat within certain temperatures, the process on which is based the manufacture of commercial plasters. If the temperature limitations are not observed, the result of the calcination process will be insoluble anhydrite which, compared with the soluble form, takes up water very slowly so as to be of no practical use, although actually it is soluble and in time is convertible into gypsum like the other forms.
