A shale layer, buried beneath two or three thousand feet of strata, in some instances, will upon folding become thicker in the synelines and thinner on top of the anticlines. This can be accounted for, in part, by the stretching on the crests of the fold and the compressing in the troughs; but this will by no means account for all of it, as is shown in the example herein set forth. It is my firm belief that the rest of the thickness is due to flow. What causes the movement, however, does not concern us here, SO long as there is movement, for this article purposes to show its effect upon the producing area of different sands. It is the author's hope, in this way, to drop a hint or two that may be valuable to the oil geologist, in making estimates of future productions and values of oil properties. An example will be given from property in the famous Gushing Pool in northeastern Oklahoma, where the author has had occasion to make a detailed study before recommending some property to his company, and has then been able to watch the results of this work. The author never mapped the surface structure in this pool, as this had been done by Frank Buttram when he was with the Oklahoma Geological Survey. We are using, therefore, a section of his map in this article for our surface contours. The main east dip comes farther east than this section shows. From the 10-ft. contours in Fig. 1, it will be seen that the surface folding is very slight, but in the contour map of the Bartlesville sand (Fig. 2), which was the greatest producing sand, we see much more complex folding. It seems that the folding becomes greater with the depth. Folding may have started in Middle Pennsylvanian times and continued through the Upper Pennsylvanian which is found at the surface. This may, or may not, have been the cause of the increase of folding with depth. However, the fact that mostly concerns us is the interval of shale between the Bartlesville sand and the Tucker sand. The Tucker is the next productive sand below the Bartlesville. Not enough wells have been drilled to the Tucker sand to make a contour map of it, but

Rock slope stability assumes different roles in decision making as a mining venture develops and, accordingly, geological investigations vary in thought and in deed according to the project stage. During exploration, stability questions bear on the decision whether or not to mine, because their resolution affects the cost of mining. During the mine lay-out stage, stability is a key factor in deciding how to mine. Finally, during mine operation, stability affects safety and operating costs, and therefore, pit productivity. Among the many considerations influencing stability, rock mass classification and geological environmental factors count heavily. The rock mass behavioral class depends upon the rock character and its degree of fracturation. The loads on the rock are derived from the environmental factors of initial state of stress and the water regime. Of course, stability is also tied to a host of non-geological factors such as the pit geometry, mining style, relative wealth, philosophy of mine operation, and accident history. METHODS OF STABILITY EVALUATION AND CORRESPONDING INVESTIGATORY TOOLS The purposes of the geological investigation are to identify and evaluate the geological factors influencing stability so that the vital questions can be analyzed. The tools selected for stability analysis reflect the stage of development of the mining scheme and therefore the geological investigations, which must furnish data for the analyses and must vary with the project stage. For exploration and mine planning, the methods of resolving stability questions must meet the need to evaluate numerous parameters in limited time; examples of such methods are stereographic projections (1, 2, 3) charted solutions(4) and simple physical models (5, 6). An investigation program that employs geological mapping tools and aids to mapping, such as geophysics, with relatively few rock tests, is in balance with these analytical methods. First data about the water regime are obtained from observed piezometric levels, and the initial state of stress is queried simply through geological inference and experience. In the layout stage more elaborate physical scale models (7) and perhaps finite element models (8, 9, 10, 11, 12), will be relevant to the design process and therefore much more detailed geological investigation is required. Some eight years ago I became interested to a considerable extent in one of the well-known deposits of sulphury iron ore in New Jersey, and, as a consequence, soon became interested in the subject of the elimination of the sulphur. On investigation I found that no department of pig-iron manufacture had received less attention than that of roasting or calcining ores for the elimination of sulphur, carbonic acid, water, etc. My first devices to eliminate sulphur mere naturally in the limekiln line, with solid fuel mixed with the ore, in the same way = common lime is burnt with small coal. While this process will succeed tolerably well for carbonates or calcareous ores, even though they contain sulphur as sulphates, I soon found it would not answer for our magnetites, which are very hard and dense, carrying from 2 to 5 per cent. of sulphur as pyrites, and become very sticky as soon as any attempt is made to roast them at a high heat. Some laboratory experiments developed the fact that the nearer the gaseous current surrounding the hot ore approached in composition pure atmospheric air the more rapidly the sulphur was oxidized, while in an atmosphere composed largely of carbonic oxide, carbonic acid, and nitrogen, it seemed almost impossible to reduce the sulphur more than one-half, which was a confirmation of the well-known Pact that just one-half of the sulphur in pyrites volatilizes very easily, and that the trouble is mainly to remove the remainder. It was thus apparent that the atmosphere surrounding the ore was of as much importance as the temperature..• This led to the trial of a kiln to heat the ore by conduction through the brick. It was divided into ore-chambers, which were surrounded with flues, through which the products of combustion of gaseoua fuel passed without coming in contact with the ore. We did not, however, succeed by this arrangement in getting more than a cherry-red heat, which, of course, was too low to accomplish anything. I had at this point become convinced— 1st. That gaseous fuel only would accomplish the work successfully. 2d. That since a high temperature was required to insure a rapid oxidation of the sulphur, and also to make the ore open and porous,

Although there was a very great increase in drilling activity along the fault line of south Texas during 1937 as compared with the previous three or four years, and although seven new fields were discovered, it cannot be said that any major development of importance took place. There were slightly over 550 completions during 1937, of which nearly 350 were oil wells as compared with some 275 the preceding year, of which 169 were oil wells. This increase in drilling activity was occasioned almost entirely by the greater interest in and development of Austin chalk production, principally in Caldwell, Guadalupe and Bastrop Counties. Seven fields were found, of which a brief description is given in Table 3. None has as yet assumed anything of major importance, and it is doubtful whether any will be classified as major discoveries through further development. Two were producing from the Edwards limestone, one from serpentine and the other four from the Austin chalk; the latter may be classified as extremely erratic in nature. The major discouraging feature of the year was the rise and subsequent fall of interest and importance of Austin chalk production. Many new operators came into this district to drill and produce Austin chalk oil toward the first of the year, but in the latter months the production decline from this formation was so rapid and the production so erratic that drilling operations fell off materially and interest largely abated. This was particularly true of the Branyon field in Caldwell County, and the same statement is applicable to the Pearsall field, Frio County. The latter field, covering some 5000 acres and owned and controlled entirely by the Amerada and Rycade, had early completions from the Austin chalk as high as 22,000 bbl. per day. The decline was extremely rapid and the maintained production from 17 wells is only around 700 bbl. per day after a total recovery of less than one-half million barrels. Present estimates of recoverable oil from Chalk vary from 2000 to 5000 bbl. per acre. A new process for the completion of producing wells from the Edwards limestone, particularly applicable to old producing areas, was developed, in that the penetration of the Edwards lime in drilled wells is now only 1 or 2 ft. as compared to between 15 and 75 ft. in wells drilled several years ago. THE axial orientations of columnar crystals in unidirectionally solidified ingots of zone-refined zinc and tin have been examined using the techniques recently described by us.' Both metals had an initial purity of 99.999+ pct before zone refining and satisfied all qualitative guides for very high purity after zone refining. Fig. 1 presents the orientations of the columnar crystals for tin and zinc, respectively. For tin, there is a preference for grains growing in the [I101 direction, i.e., the dendrite direction.' For zinc, a weak preference for the [0001] direction is seen (a random population in the unit triangle would give equal density on either side of the 60-deg circle centered on [0001]).' There was no apparent evidence for dendritic growth in either metal. These results, and those previously reported,' confirm the recent investigation by Hellawell and Herbert of casting textures observed for zone-refined lead, zinc, and tin.4 The preferred casting orientations for these metals in both the impure and zone-refined states are given in Table I. In the experiments on zone-refined lead,' it was shown that two separate textures existed: a preferred (111) nucleation texture existed at the chill surface and a preferred (111) texture developed during solidification. Either effect is sufficient to produce the result recorded in Table I. Similarly the results recorded for tin and zinc may be attributable to either a preferred nucleation or a preferred growth phenomenon and additional experiments are required to separate these two possible explanations. Hellawell and Herbert' attribute their results to a preferred growth process and account for it on the basis of a "layer-growth" model proposed much earlier by one of the present authors.5 An equally satisfactory growth model would be that based upon anisotropic surface energies. However, both of these growth models would indicate that the preferred growth direction for very pure metals should be normal to the plane of closest packing in the metal. This is consistent for zinc but, contrary to the conclusion of Hellawell and Herbert, it is not consistent for tin since here the (100) is expected to exhibit a greater density of packing than the (110). Although tin is expected to exhibit an anisotropy of thermal conductivity, we would expect the thermal conductivity to be the same in the [1101 as the [l00]

It is impossible to speak in exact terms of the effect that selective flotation has had, is having, and may have on the State of Utah. Its results enter into the economic structure of the state in so many ways and its ramifications are so widespread, that every line of industry is affectcd. Some effects can be definitely determined; others can be reasonably approximated; but the effect as a whole can not be set out in exact figures. Utah is essentially a mining state; mining is its basic industry and always will be. Agriculture, equally a basic industry, and of course, equally vital, can be practiced on only 6 per cent. of the 85,000 square miles of its area. It follows, therefore, that the economic future of this state depends upon a development of its natural resources. About 6 or 7 years ago, the mining industry in Utah was at a low ebb. This condition was caused partly by postwar conditions and other temporary causes, but prevailed also, which was most important, because the direet-smelting ores of the state were being rapidly exhausted and the cost of treatment of complex ores was almost prohibitive. Furthermore, the wet concentration of low-grade ores was unsatisfactory and did not result in producing a good smelting product. On visualizing this situation, one of the large smelting companies in the valley had the courage, ability and faith to develop and expand the principles involved in selective flotation of complex ores. This example has been followrd by other smelting and reduction companirs and the result has changed the entire aspect of the mining industry in Utah. The utilization of the zinc in the low-grade, lead-zinc-silvrr ores was the principal prob1t.m to be solvcd. The average yearly production from the State of Utah for the 10 years beginning 1914 and ending 1923, was something less than 10,000 tons of zinc corlcentrates. This period includes the world war, when abnormal priccs stimulated production. In 1924, selective flotation began to be practiced on a considerable scale, replacing concentration by gravity and bulk flotation which had been used generally until this time. Production and Value of Zinc Concentrates The production of zinc concentrates during 1924 was approximately 24,000 tons, or twice the average yearly production of the previous 10

The Peruvian production increased over 3 million barrels from 1933 to 1934—from approximately 13¼ million barrels to over 16¼ million barrels—bringing the cumulative production of the country up to 171 million barrels. Most of this production, as well as most of the increase in 1934, came from La Brea-Parinas Estate, the property of the International Petroleum Co., Limited. In 1932 Peru stood eleventh among the oil-producing countries of the world, but in 1933 her production exceeded that of Trinidad, Argentine and Colombia, which placed her in eighth position. In 1934 Peru's production was exceeded by that of Colombia by about one million barrels, and by that of the Argentine by about 1½ million barrels, thus placing her in tenth position. After several years of relative inactivity in drilling and exploration there was a noticeable increase during 1934 in both of these lines of activity. Oil Fields La Brea-Parinas Estate.—Production on the La Brea-Parinas Estate. reached a significant total of 85,080 bbl. as early as 1891. It increased to over one million barrels in 1912, and to over 10 million barrels in 1929, and in 1934 it reached an all-time high of over 14 million barrels. The total production from 1890 to 1934 was 133,784,609 barrels. Practically all the drilling on the property has been done with cable tools, but during 1934 three strings of rotary tools were introduced. One was a heavy outfit for drilling a deep test and the other two were lighter outfits for deepening wells in the newer section of the field, where the gas pressure was too high to permit safe drilling with standard tools. During 1934 a total of 28,127 ft. was drilled, 66 wells were deepened, and 6 new wells were completed. At the end of the year 2844 wells had been drilled on the Estate, of which 1814 were still productive. The remaining 1030 wells represent abandoned producers or dry holes. The total area that has been productive up to the present time is estimated at 13,369 acres. An interesting article on the various phases of operations of the International Petroleum Co. was written by Arthur Iddings and published in The Oil and Gas Journal (Dec. 27, 1934).

The creep properties of lead alloys have been studied by a number of investigators but most of the work has been done on extruded material and the amount of data available on rolled alloys is surprisingly limited. Greenwood1 and his collaborators investigated various rolled commercial leads containing relatively small amounts of impurities, Phillips2 likewise studied rolled commercial leads, although he did include a few alloys— such as tellurium lead and one per cent antimonial lead. But as far as the authors are aware no data on the creep properties of so-called "hard leads"-—i.e., containing from 4 to 8 per cent antimony—have been published. In this paper some data are presented on a few antimonial lead alloys and compared with a copper-bearing lead. Preparation OF Specimens All the alloys used in this investigation were cast at a temperature of 400°C. into an open cast-iron mold preheated to Ioo°C., the resultant casting being % by I by 10 in. The copper-bearing alloy was cold-rolled by 10 per cent passes to a thickness of 0.100 in. Creep specimens 16 in. long were prepared by clamping the strips between wooden blocks and machining the edges of the strips parallel by means of a plane. Careful manipulation gave parallel specimens with no reduced section and with a minimum of distortion. The antimonial lead castings were hot-rolled in 10 per cent passes at a temperature of I50°C. to a thickness of 0.400 in., the heating being carried out in an electric oven after each pass through the rolls. After the castings had been broken down to 0.400 in., they were allowed to cool to room temperature and then cold-rolled to 0.100 in. with the usual Io per cent passes. Sufficient time was allowed after each pass for the strips to cool to room temperature. The apparatus and method of measuring strain have been adequately described in a previous paper3 and essentially the same practice was used in obtaining the present data. The results of repressuring (or gas-drive) have been very encouraging to the several companies doing experimental work along these lines in California. The most notable examples are the Shell and the Union Oil companies at Dominguez, the Marland Oil Co. at Seal Beach, and the California Petroleum Corpn. at South Mountain. The results of the Marland test at Seal Beach are interesting in that re pressuring was started while several wells were still flowing; also, on account of the high pressures required to overcome the hydrostatic pressure exerted by high-head edge water. The well first chosen for repressuring is about halfway up the flank of the structure and had been on the beam making about 250 bbl. of fluid daily, cutting about 60 per cent. emulsion. The fluid lcvel was 230 ft. from the surface and the top of the sand was 4393 ft. Tubing was run to 4000 ft. with a packer and the space above the packer was filled with water to balance the high pressures. Gas was started in slowly to allow the fluid to be pushed back into the sand, and required three days at a pressure of 1500 Ib. per sq. in. before starting into formation. The pressure was once built up to 1800 Ib. and the compressor was shut down for a few hours. When again started, the well took gas at 1500 Ib., and after about three weeks the pressure was dropped to 1450 Ib. The present pressures required range between 1400 and 1450 lb. Volumes as high as 1,500,000 cu. ft. per 24 hr. were put into the well. Increases as high as 50 per cent. in production were obtained in wells up-structure with very little increase in wells down-structure. Also, the water cut on one edge well materially decreased. After about 40 days the repressuring was moved to two wells farther down-structure and the well originally repressured was put on production. The result of this was a great increase in the production of wells one location farther down-structure, a rapid increase in one well one location up-structure, and a decrease in production of the wells farthest up-structure. Later the gas started to short-cut to the nearest well down-structure, nullifying to a certain extent the effects of the repressuring work. THE coal hydrogenation process is well known as a means for production of liquid fuels from coal. In this paper, the possibilities of the coal hydrogenation process as a source of chemical raw materials will be discussed. The recovery of chemicals from coal hydrogenation products necessitates some modifications and additions to the equipment used for the production of fuels. The conversion of coal into liquid fuels such as gasoline requires two steps: liquid-phase and vapor-phase hydrogenation. Intermediate oils obtained in the liquid phase contain oxygen and nitrogen compounds, especially aromatic compounds, since the coal itself is composed mainly of cyclic compounds. These oils are the raw material for the separation of high-molecular-weight aromatics and of tar acids and tar bases. The relative amounts of heavy and middle oil-boiling above and below 325ºC, for instance-can be influenced by temperature, residence time, and catalyst of the liquid-phase hydrogenation. In vapor-phase hydrogenation, a solid bed catalyst is used to convert the intermediate oil from the liquid-phase operation into hydrocarbons of the gasoline boiling range. Essentially pure hydrocarbons with a low content of sulphur, oxygen, nitrogen, and olefines are obtained. Depending mainly on the catalyst, the high ring-compound content of the liquid-phase oil can be preserved and gasoline rich in aromatics obtained. However, with other catalysts, these ring compounds can be split into gasoline with a high content of isoparafhns.3 Again, depending on the operating conditions, products of varying boiling range can be obtained. Selection of catalyst and operating conditions therefore makes possible the production of different grades of motor fuel and also variations in the relative amounts of benzene, toluene, and xylene when aromatic hydrocarbons are produced. The schematic flowsheet, Fig 1, shows the main steps of the coal hydrogenation process, and the product streams used for the recovery of chemicals are indicated. In the liquid-phase stage, coal is made into a paste with re- cycle heavy oil. The coal paste is mixed with hydrogen and preheated at a pressure of 300 to 700 atm in heat exchangers and preheaters. The coal paste and hydrogen enter high-pressure converters where the liquefaction of coal, conversion of the high-boiling liquid materials initially obtained, into intermediate oils is performed at a temperature around 470ºC. IE the molecular constitution of molten slags were better known, the nature of chemical reactions in slags and between slags and metals could be better understood and as a consequence might be better controlled. Constitutional information can be obtained by studies on either the molten or the solidified slags. Valuable as the studies on solidified slags admittedly are for many purposes, especially as control methods in steelmaking, they are always of questionable value in giving information on the molecular constitution of liquid slags. However, the characteristics of molten slags such as viscosity, rates of dilfusion, and electrica1 conductivity can be determined experimentally and interpreted along with other knowledge on slag-metal and slag-gas reactions so as to provide direct information on liquid slags. Metallurgists are accustomed to regard reactions in molten slags as involving only neutral molecules, whereas it is quite possible that ionic constituents are actually involved. For example, the dissociation of calcium silicate usually is represented us Ca2SiO4 = 2CaO + SiO2 although a reasonable alternative would be to write Ca2SiO4 = 2Ca+2 + Si04-4 Such ionic dissociation has been suggested frequently without adequate experimental proof. This paper deals especially with electrical conductivity measurements on slags oi the blast-furnace type. These measurements were made to determine whether or not slags are ionized and, if so, to provide a qualitative estimate of the extent of ionization. Electrolysis experiments that indicate the identity of the ions present are also reported. Since the presence of ions has not been considered carefully in modern slag studies, the relevant literature will be reviewed. Review of Literature In 1906 Aikenl obtained a patent for a continuous process of producing iron electrolytically by passing a direct currenl through a bath of FeO.SiO2 to which iron oxide was added periodically to maintain a uniform concentration. The patent also included the addition of CaO and MgO to the bath to lower its melting point. The silicate melts involved were thus in the same system as basic open-hearth slags but with higher FeO and lower CaO contents. Electrical conductivity measurements were made on some molten silicates by Doelter2 in 1907. Natural silicates, such as

Without doubt Arizona was the scene of the first use of coal in North America, that by the Hopi Indians as early as the 10th century in burning their pottery and in heating their houses and kivas (ceremonial rooms). As has already been said this is the only use of coal by Indians of which we have any knowledge, but it has been well established through investigations conducted by the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology of Harvard University. The apparatus for burning was crude, but they did have fireplaces and chimneys which would draw. The evidences of coal use were found in the Jeddito Valley, in Navajo County, during the excavation of the pueblo of Awatovi, only a short distance from the Keams Canon School. "Many fire pits and primitive stone stoves containing coal ash have been found in the houses, and in most of the kivas built between 1300 and 1600, two firepits have been found, one containing wood ash exclusively and the other coal ash."' The expedition of 1939 found that coal was used much earlier than this, as stated above. It is probable that these Indians were using coal regularly before it came into general use in England and northern Europe. Apparently the use of coal was largely stopped about the time the Spaniards came to that country. The ruins are located on the southern edge of the Black Mesa and the coal seams outcrop on the mesa edge below the ruins. "The coal occurs principally in one large seam which varies from a foot and a half to six feet in thickness."1 This coal is sub-bituminous and burns well, leaving a large percentage of white ash. Another seam is found about 40 ft. above this large seam; it is from six inches to a foot thick and burns to a red ash. Both of these seams were used and coal from the larger seam was used at other houses in the valley. The pottery was usually burned close to the coal seams, and the coal was used to obtain a uniform and satisfactory color. In the Jeddito Valley, the mining was done by stripping, and the methods used are described as follows by J. 0. Brew and John T. Hack, the investigators.

There is a conspicuous lack of information in the literature on the precise role played by residual quantities of austenite in heat-treated steels. While retained austenite may be expected to have significant effects on such important properties as the impact resistance of tools and carburized parts and the dimensional stability of dies and gauges, attempts to study these problems systematically have suffered from the absence of a reliable technique for ascertaining absolute amounts of austenite. With such a technique, not only could the relation between residual austenite and service behavior be investigated, but the chemical and heat-treatment factors that control the quantity of the austenite could also be established. Thus, the retained austenite content could then be regulated in accordance with the results desired. The presence of retained austenite may be inferred by observing the changes in properties (hardness, specific volume, electrical resistance, etc.) due to its decomposition on subatmospheric cooling1 or on tempering,2 but these indirect measurements are not readily translated into percentages of austenite. Quantitative determinations have been achieved in special cases by means of dilatometric3 and magnetic4,5 measurements; but the former procedure requires that observations be conducted during the hardening and involves difficult calibrations that limit its applicability, while the magnetic procedure is very sensitive to extraneous influences and depends upon assumptions that can only be considered as approximate in an absolute sense. There is a conspicuous lack of information in the literature on the precise role played by residual quantities of austenite in heat-treated steels. While retained austenite may be expected to have significant effects on such important properties as the impact resistance of tools and carburized parts and the dimensional stability of dies and gauges, attempts to study these problems systematically have suffered from the absence of a reliable technique for ascertaining absolute amounts of austenite. With such a technique, not only could the relation between residual austenite and service behavior be investigated, but the chemical and heat-treatment factors that control the quantity of the austenite could also be established. Thus, the retained austenite content could then be regulated in accordance with the results desired. The presence of retained austenite may be inferred by observing the changes in properties (hardness, specific volume, electrical resistance, etc.) due to its decomposition on subatmospheric cooling1 or on tempering,2 but these indirect measurements are not readily translated into percentages of austenite. Quantitative determinations have been achieved in special cases by means of dilatometric3 and magnetic4,5 measurements; but the former procedure requires that observations be conducted during the hardening and involves difficult calibrations that limit its applicability, while the magnetic procedure is very sensitive to extraneous influences and depends upon assumptions that can only be considered as approximate in an absolute sense. The Kolar gold field has been for a long time the most important gold-producing area of India. It is situated in the Skate of Mysore, southern India, and not far from the City of Bangalore. The productive field is about 3 miles long and in it a gold-bearing quartz vein varying in width from 1 in. to over 10 ft. is worked. The vein carries high values to great depths and many of the mines have paid large dividends. Geological Formations In KolaR Region The rocks of the Kolar region are pre-Cambrian in age and bear a close resemblance to some of the pre-Cambrian formations of America. The oldest rocks seen are basic lavas, now mostly altered to hornblende-schists, with which is associated some banded iron-formation; these rocks are similar to the Keewatin schists and iron-formation in the Lake Superior region. The schist is cut by the gold-bearing quartz vein. In certain parts of the area there is also a conglomerate containing pebbles of granite, jasper, and schist. The matrix resembles a hornblende-schist and is intruded by small granite dikes, which in some cases have been pinched off by squeezing of the rock. This has led Dr. W. I?. Smeeth, Chief Inspector of Mines of Mysore, to whom the writer is greatly indebted for information regarding this area and for his hospitality while visiting the field, to regard this conglomerate as a breccia due to crushing of granite dikes in the schist. Dr. J. W. Evans has regarded the conglomerate as probably a squeezed glacial boulder clay. From analogy with pre-Cambrian conglomerates in America, the writer regards it as a metamorphosed rock similar to our basal Huronian conglomerate. However, the main bearing which it has upon the problem under discussion is the apparent fact that it is younger than the schist and that it indicates the presence of a syncline in the rocks cut by the quartz vein. Surrounding the area of schist and conglomerate is a large mass of granite-gneiss resembling the Laurentian gneiss of the Lake Superior region. Still later than the rocks mentioned above are basic intrusions which cut the quartz and schists; in the mines these are known as trap. One dike of this type is 50 to 60 yd. wide.

The reaction of aluminum with oxygen in liquid iron has been studied at 1740° and 1910°C. Interaction coefficients are very much smaller than those previously published. The equilibrium constant falls within the approximate range of earlier experiments and calculations. It is now well established that the "deoxidation constant" for aluminum in liquid steel at normal steelmaking temperatures is extremely srnall. Thus at 1600 the product [% Al] is of the order of 10- 14. At this temperature, therefore, great experimental difficulties are encountered in any attempt to obtain a direct measure of the constant. If the aluminum content of the metal is high enough to permit accurate analytical determination, that of the oxygen is too low. If the oxygen content is high, the aluminum is below the limits of detection. Our best values of the constant have come, therefore, from indirect calculations or by extrapolation downward from observations at higher temperatures.. For their studies in the range 1695° to 1866°C, Gokcen and chipman' restricted their aluminum concentrations to less than 0.06 pct. Oxygen analyses were made by the vacuum fusion method which appears to be dependable at these low aluminum concentrations. Experimental results, even at the highest temperature employed, are extremely sensitive to small errors in the analysis of either element. The slight change in the equilibrium constant with aluminum and oxygen concentration was utilized in the calculation of interaction coefficients expressing the effect of aluminum on the activity coefficient of oxygen and the reciprocal effect of oxygen on the activity coefficient of aluminum. The range of concentration, however, was so limited that only a rough value for the interaction coefficient could be obtained. This value was much more negative than that found for any other pair of reactants. In view of the very limited range of concentration employed, the reported values have always been regarded as very questionable. A redetermination was the object of the work reported here. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD At high aluminum concentrations, the vacuum fusion method is susceptible to grave error due to absorption of gas by aluminum distilled from the sample. Since it was desirable to extend the study to at least as much as 1 pct Al, another method for analysis was sought. Through an acquaintance with him of nearly 35 years, during 12 yeam of which I was intimately associated with him both in business and socially, I learned to appreciate his many high qualities, his strict adherence to high professional and social ideals, and his lovable traits of character. In this appreciation I was joined by every one who was thrown in close personal contact with him. He was a conscientious student, not given to hasty judgments, but when he formed an opinion he was positive in upholding it. At the same time, he was most courteous and kindly in combatting that which he believed was erroneous. In fact, I never knew a person of his attainments more modest, forceful and kindly, or one who had a keener sense of clean humor. In his private life,he was a devoted husband and father, a consistent communicant and worker in the Episcopal Church, and was charitable in all things. In fact, his whole life was marked by helpfulness to others and a determined and successful effort to "make the world better by his having lived in it." Doctor Stoek was born in Washington, D. C., Jan. 16, 1866. His early education was obtained in the public schools of that city and he graduated from the Central High School in the first class to graduate from a high school in Washington. He entered Lehigh University in 1883, graduated in 1887 with the degree of Bachelor of Science, and after a year of post-graduate study in mining and metallurgy he received the degree of Engineer of Mines. During the summer vacation in 1885, he served as an assistant in the Department of Mineralogy in the National Museum at Washington, and during the summer of 1887 acted as U. S. Government inspector of dredging on the Tharnes River, Connecticut. From June, 1888, to January, 1900, he was assistant engineer for the Susquehanna Coal Co., at Wilkes-Barre, Pa. VIRTUALLY all commercial use of electrostatic separation has employed separators depending on differences of conductance of the broken, solid mixtures treated by them. The two main types of conductance separators have been: (1) Those in which the separating field is as near a static field between two charged electrodes as it is possible to maintain in the face of the usual leakage that takes place between electrodes with some 5 to 50 kv tension between them and spacing of l/z to 3 in.; (2) those in which a convective discharge of corona or spray type, but not a spark discharge, takes place between the carrier electrode and a charged electrode facing it, which is of very restricted area, such as a row of needle points or a small diameter wire parallel to the face of the carrier electrode. The present paper deals with this latter type. The principle is usable in separators where the carrier electrode, usually grounded, has the shape of a roller, a conveyor belt, a vibrating table, a sloping chute, or a nearly vertical plate. The innovation studied by us has been the use of the convective field for charging material on the carrier electrode and succeeded by a field between the carrier electrode and an electrode made of a true dielectric which cannot take on a charge by conduction but is charged by being in the radius of the corona discharge. The acquired charge is of the same sign as that of the corona but is not dischargable by contact with a good conductor. However, high-tension charge tends to leak off because of the ionization of the ambient air. The field between this electrode and the carrier electrode is as near static as it is possible to obtain. There are some differences in behavior of this electrode and that of the gas tube electrode used by Sutton, as will be discussed below. Both electrodes cause increased adhesion of nonconductive particles to the carrier roll. The particles are pinned there because they are convectively charged on their outer surfaces facing the corona electrode. The electrodes also cause increased rate of release of conductive particles tending to be pinned by corona charging but conveying the charge to the grounded carrier roll almost as rapidly as it is received by the particles.
