Geophysics differs from geology and physics in in many respects. In the first place, geophysics is a complex science embracing the fields of seismology, geomagnetism, geoelectricity, geodesy, meteorology, vol-canology, physical oceanography, physical hydrology, tectonophysics and exploration geophysics. Geology is also a complex science and so extensive in its various fields that no one can master them all, and no part of geology deals in any sense with several of these fields of geophysics. In the second place, geophysics makes use of methods and instruments that are derived primarily from the science of physics. Geology, on the other hand, has methods of its own and it draws its borrowed techniques and its instrumental equipment not only from physics but also and perhaps primarily from chemistry and biology. The difference, therefore, between the geophysicist and the geologist lies partly in the phenomena that are observed, partly in the methods and instruments with which each carries on his exploration; but partly also, and perhaps principally, in the habitual attitude of mind and in the background of specialized training with which each approaches the problems presented by this planet of ours. The geologist as such, therefore, is no geophysicist. On the other hand, the physicist is not a geophysicist either. Isolation of each problem in a closed laboratow system under complete control is fundamental to the methods of the physicist. The geophysicist must apply physical instruments and physicomathematical reasoning to the study of physical quantities in their undisturbed natural environment. What, then, is a geophysicist? In the sense that he is a trained expert in all of the geophysical sciences, I do not believe that such a person ever existed. It would be beyond the possibilities of a single lifetime. I think there is confusion in our ideas and in our use of terms. We are not all thinking of the same thing when we say geophysics or geophysicist; yet we seem to talk as though we were. It is as absurd to say that the whole of geophysics belongs to geology because the field of a particular type of geophysicist—the exploration geophysicist —calls for some knowledge of geology as it would be to say that the whole of biology belongs to geology because a particular type of biologist—the paleontologist— needs some knowledge of geology. Development of a Geophysicist Since it is impossible to become an expert in all the fields of geophysics, and since students entering college seldom know the field they will choose as a career, what would we suggest as the best general preparation for work in geophysics, whether as a meteorologist, an oceanographer, a seismologist, a geodesist, a geomagneticist, a volcanologist, a tectonophysicist, a hydro1 ogist, or an exploration geophysicistp we may distinguish five phases in the development of a geophysicist: (I) his mathematical and scientific studies in high school; (2) the general mathematical and scientific

Since the entry of the United States into global war, virtually all data and information necessary for compiling figures on world petroleum consumption have become unavailable. This situation undoubtedly will continue until the world petroleum industry can return to a peacetime basis. During the past 10 years, the authors, by publishing annual estimates of .world consumption, have attempted to emphasize the importance of a yearly world-wide survey of petroleum supply and demand. It is beconling more and more evident that statistics for the United States alone can no longer give a comprehensive idea of the state of the petroleum industry, even within the United States itself. Therefore, when conditions in the industry again become normal, it is the hope of the authors that those bureaus equipped to do so will carry forward the study of petroleum supply and demand on a world-wide basis. Enough data and information are available, however, to attempt a rough estimate of world output of crude petroleum and petroleum substitutes for 1942, which to some extent may reflect the trend of world consumption. This estimate by countries, as compared with the output in 1941, is shown in Table I. The world production of crude petroleum and petroleum substitutes for 1942 is estimated at 2,208,000,000 bbl., or a decrease of 171,000,000 bbl. under 1941. Crude production is believed to have decreased by about 200,000,000 bbl., (about 9 per cent); while petroleum substitutes increased by 28,500,000 bbl., (nearly 20 per cent). The decline of crude output in the United States is estimated at 19,000,000 bb1.—less than 2 per cent; while that in foreign countries is estimated at 180,000,000 bbl., or more than 20 per cent. The marked decline abroad is due largely to losses in Venezuela and Colombia, where the lack of ocean transportation became the controlling factor, and in the East Indies and Burma, where military invasion brought about the destruction of the fields. The production of petroleum substitutes in 1942 apparently reached a new high figure of 7.5 per cent of the total world petroleum output. The important features of petroleum production outside of the United States are the changes that have taken place during the year in the supply of the Axis countries. In Japan the output for 1941 was estimated at 8,800,000 bbl., 5,500,000 of which were petroleum substitutes. It is believed that the output of synthetic oils during 1942 substantially increased, raising the total interior production of Japan to nearly 10,-ooo,ooo bbl. Also, during 1942 Japanese armed forces gained possession of oil fields having a normal peacetime output of about 78,000,000 bbl. per year. The production of these areas for 1942 is estimated at some 23,000,000 bbl., which indicates that Japan is now getting at least 33,000,000 bbl. a year, which exceeds by 8,000,000 bbl. Its

Bailey (British Non-Ferrous Metals Research Association, London, England)—I was glad to see this further work on the structure and properties of the Cu-Ni-Fe alloys of low nickel content in which we have been so interested in the United Kingdom since before the war." The authors' data on the variation in solubility of iron in both 5 and 10 pct Ni alloys with temperature is based on more detailed observations than we have made but is generally in line with our own work. The difficulty in these matters is in the identification of the structures obtained. The precipitation of the second phase which we presume to be the a' solid solution, richer in nickel and iron, from the a solution with which it is in equilibrium occurs in such a fine state of division that its resolution by ordinary micro-graphic methods is impossible in the early stages. We have published some electron micrographs which illustrate the effects observed more clearly but we agree with the authors when they say that dark staining characteristics when the alloys are subjected to sea-water corrosion are more sensitive in detecting the presence of the a' phase than is the microscope. After taking this point into consideration, however, I confess to some difficulty in understanding Fig. 4. I can only assume that the precipitates visible at such a low magnification as 150 diam in these relatively coarse forms are produced from iron-rich areas of the initial solid solution due to inadequate homogenization. If this is so I find it difficult to accept the authors' contention that such local variations in iron concentration as are capable of giving the heavy precipitates shown in Fig. 4 do not in fact materially affect the solvus surfaces of their equilibrium diagrams. I share the authors' enthusiasm about the resistance to corrosion of these alloys by seawater but I am not fully in agreement with them on the vexing question of the best iron content for these alloys. In Fig. 3 of ref. 8, we give many results showing that the resistance of these alloys to impingement attack in the Jet Test increases as the iron content rises to 2 pct. With higher iron contents pitting at shielded areas is likely to occur. Admittedly the addition of 0.75 pct Fe produces a large improvement in corrosion resistance compared with a pure 90/10 Cu-Ni alloy, but the further improvement on raising the iron to 2 pct is substantial. We recommend from 1.5 to 2 pct Fe as the desirable range from the point of view of corrosion resistance. While it is true that British practice generally uses a hard tube, the corrosion resistance of the 10 pct Ni alloys has in our work been little affected by the structural condition. Although the annealed alloys blacken in seawater, this effect seems to be superficial and not to be accompanied by any real decrease in

Sublevel stoping was first developed in the Michigan iron mines many years ago. Since that time this method, and modifications with long hole drilling, have been used in a number of non-ferrous mines and have been described in various papers and articles. With a few exceptions, the operations where sublevel methods have been applied are producers of large daily tonnages from ore bodies of considerable size. In selecting mining methods for small properties or relatively small detached ore bodies, sublevel methods often have been overlooked. The method has been used successfully in relatively small operations at Copper Canyon, Nevada, and, more recently, in mining small ore bodies at Darwin, Calif. As a result of this experience, we believe that a review of the general procedure, the advantages noted, and the results obtained will be of interest to many operators of relatively small mines. General Description Briefly, sublevel stoping consists of, first, driving sublevel drifts at predetermined vertical intervals through the length of the stope block; second, breaking an initial mining slot across the stope; third, driving crosscut benches from each sublevel by slabbing into the slot; and, fourth, breaking the ground between benches. Applicability Since this is an open stope method, it requires wall rock that will stand over reasonable stope lengths without caving or excessive slabbing. Ore must be moderately firm but need not be hard. The method is best adapted to steep dipping, tabular or lenticular ore bodies but may be applied to ore bodies of almost any shape if their vertical extent is appreciable. It can be used with dips that are too flat for successful shrinkage stopes and can be modified for use with slushers on dips below about 40". Initial mining at the Copper Canyon operation consisted of sublevel stopes for the wider ore sections and shrinkage stopes for the narrow sections where ore widths averaged about 15 ft. After some experience and a study of comparative results on completed stope blocks, sublevels were substituted for shrinkage stopes even in the narrow ore widths. Practical stope lengths depend upon the character of the walls and the continuity of values within the ore body. Where blocks of low grade or waste are included in the stoping limits, these areas can readily be left as pillars for intermediate wall support and longer stope lengths may be planned. Raises can be spotted in narrow or low grade areas and stope lengths adjusted accordingly. Stoping Details To illustrate stoping details, assume that we have an ore shoot 15 to 30 ft wide and about 200 ft long, with walls that would stand over a stope length of 80 to 90 ft (Fig1). PRELIMINARY DEVELOPMENT Preliminary development for sublevel stoping would be simple. A service raise is driven at about the center of the block and stope limits planned to leave a pillar around this raise. Sublevel drifts driven each way from this central raise will outline the

IN the Parkes process of lead refining, after desilverization has been completed by means of the addition of zinc, there remains in the lead from 0.5 to 0.6 pct zinc. At this stage in the refining operations virtually all impurities are reduced to refined lead specifications except zinc and antimony. All excess copper, nickel and cobalt have been removed by the zinc additions. The silver remaining should not exceed 0.1 oz per ton. It then remains only to remove the zinc and antimony in order to produce refined lead. At the Herculaneum plant of the St. Joseph Lead Co., practice formerly was to complete the refining by means of oxidation in a reverberatory furnace. This process consisted of heating the lead to 14000 to 1500°F and allowing it to come in contact with excess air passing over the surface of the lead and periodically agitating the bath of lead with air. This procedure not only resulted in the loss of zinc but of a considerable quantity of lead converted to the oxide in the form of dross and fume. The fume, collected in the baghouse, together with the dross was returned to the blast furnace, thus adding appreciably to the circulating load on the blast furnace and refinery. In addition, operation and maintenance of the reverberatory furnace was expensive and required the performance of disagreeably hot and somewhat hazardous work. The process of dezincing with high vacuum was developed at this plant as a substitute for the oxidation process and finally led to lower operating costs, the practical elimination of dross and fume and the direct production of metallic zinc, which is very suitable for re-use in the desilverization process. Essentially this process consists of subjecting the lead to high vacuum, in a kettle provided with means for heating, a bell-shaped member open at the lower end so constructed that it can be immersed in the molten lead, and means for evacuating the interior of the bell and for sealing an agitator. Metallic zinc is thus produced and collects on the upper cooled part of the bell member. This metallic zinc is periodically removed and re-used in the desilverization process. The process is quite simple. It is conducted at a low temperature, thus permitting the use of iron equipment, and shows a material saving in refining costs over the old method. EQUIPMENT AND ITS USES Dezincing Machine.-The equipment employed in this process consists of a dezincing machine, a steel kettle of 120 tons capacity, a vacuum system and equipment for handling the dezincing machine (Fig I). The dezincing machine consists of a compact assembly, suitable for handling with an overhead crane, consisting of a treating chamber and the agitating mechanism. THIS paper covers the operation and maintenance of Diesel locomotives underground on a portion of the Delaware River Aqueduct.[t] This part of the tunnel is r5 miles long, with shafts 14 ft. in diameter spaced about 5 miles apart. These shafts (2, 2a and 3) are 825 ft., 1551 and 840 ft. deep, respectively. The grade of the tunnel is almost level, except for the 12,100 ft. north of shaft 2, which has a grade of 2.31 per cent. The tunnel is circular, 19 to 19 ft. in diameter, It lies at a depth of 400 ft. below sea level, with a maximum overburden of 2400 feet. The tunnel driving was carried on in six headings, using 15 storage-battery locomotive each of 13 gross tons and having a [inum] speed of 8 miles per hour. The longest haul was 3 miles, which proved to be the maximum distance for which storage-battery locomotives could be employed economically for the amount of material to be moved. One locomotive was used for switching cars at each heading, one for switching cars at the bottom of each shaft and one on the main-line haul from the heading to the shaft. The maximum amount of material hoisted in one shaft from two headings when 104 ft. of tunnel was driven in 24 hr. was 1000 cu. yd., or about 2000 tons of rock in place. The total quantity excavated was 950,000 cu. yd. (1,500,000 tons of rock). The tunnel-lining operations using con¬crete presented a problem of hauling a maximum distance of 5 miles in the tunnel. The concrete-placing equipment had a capacity of about 2000 cu. yd., or 4000 tons in 24 hours. Experience had shown that storage-battery equipment could not handle this quantity of material within the time required at the distance of 5 miles, Trolley-locomotive haulage was considered dangerous and expensive, and would cause interference because transmission equipment would be required. Therefore the performance of Diesel locomotives of 160 hp., with a speed of 18 miles per hour, in comparison with that of other types of locomotives, was studied. CHOICE OF LOCOMOTIVES In deciding upon the type of locomotive to be used for the 5-mile haul, four alternatives were considered, as follows: I. To purchase additional storage-battery locomotives with the necessary batteries over the 6 locomotives and 12 batteries available. 2. To convert the existing battery locomotives to the trolley type. 3. To purchase new trolley locomotives. 4. To purchase Diesel locomotives. PROPOSITION No. I The go-hp. storage-battery locomotives available (each weighing about 12 tons), when hauling a load of 64 tons, with a drawbar pull of about 1900 lb. on a level track, developed a speed of 8 miles per hour and could make five round trips in 8 hr. with a

An intensified search for gas, because of the shortage in the area, led to the completion of 482 wells in southwestern Pennsylvania during 1944. This number was 27 more than the number in 1943, but 118 of the wells were nonproductive. Shallow Development Oil The initial production of the 25 producers completed was slightly less than was obtained from four wells above last yearJs total. The largest well, 20 bbl., was found in the Big Injun (Miss.) sand in Morris township, Washington County, at a depth of 2085 ft. It is currently producing about 3 bbl. per day. Outside the main producing area, a well drilled in Nicholson township, Fayette County, obtained 15 bbl. per day from 1864 to 1866 ft. in the Gantz (U. Dev.) sand. The Federal subsidy of 75¢ per barrel, effective , 1, 1944, which increased to $3.40 the current pipe-line price in this area, seems to have been insufficient stimulus to materially increase drilling for oil, although more repressuring operations are contemplated. Gas The volume of initial open flow of gas developed is off slightly over 10 million cu. ft. from 36 more wells than were completed a year ago, and the average rock pressure of this new gas is more than 100 lb. less than that obtained a year ago. Apparently the best find of this year was reported in Patton township, Allegheny County, where an initial volume of over 4 million cu. ft, was encountered in the Speechley (U. Dev.) sand at a depth of from 3293 to 3303 ft. The rock pressure there, 1190 lb. per sq. in., is nearly virgin. However, this area is fairly well delimited by dry holes and docs not seem nearly so promising from the standpoint of reserves as the Armbrust area, which was discovered several Years ago. In the patton township locality another fair well with 1303 M cu. ft. open flow and 400 lb. Per 59. in. rock pressure completed in the Hundred-Foot (U. Dev.) sand at a a depth of 2125 feet. Armstrong County, as usual, leads in number of producing wells completed with lowest percentage of failures but ranks only fou th in volume of production developed. Only two wells here had more than one million cubic feet capacity, but the rock pessure was under 200 Ib. Per sq. inch. In Fayette County, where the largest portion of new gas was found, activity appears to be shifting eastward. In Luzerne township, four producers having a total combined initial open flow in excess of 10 million cu, ft, were found in the Big Injun (Miss.) sand. The best well was found also in the same area in the Speechley sand (U. Dev.) at a depth of 3460 ft. This was a 2500-M CU. ft. well in Georges township. Several wells of more than a million cubic feet capacity were found in Jackson, Washington, Wayne and Whitley townships, Greene County. None of these, however, was in a new pool.

INTRODUCTION From the point of view of the consumer, the cost of mineral commodities might be viewed as the total price industry pays for mine output. Similarly, the mining company engaged in the ongoing business of finding, developing and operating new mines is concerned very much today with the distribution of all the revenue paid for mine output and not just with its direct or controllable cash costs. In other words, what will the labor force, the supplier of energy, explosives, and reagents, and the supplier of government services, management, capital, and the ore reserves receive for their contribution to production? A significant amount might be categorized as what economic theory classifies as economic rent. Mining companies are finding it increasingly difficult to negotiate concession or work contracts to develop ore reserves in lesser developed countries, just as they find themselves accused of taking excess profits in their own countries. The principal difficulty in reaching mutually satisfactory agreements in many cases is the difficulty in establishing an acceptable distribution of income, in particular the distribution of economic rent. (See Chapter 7). Further, it is logical that the decisions and policies of the interested parties be they government or industry should be and will be influenced by their competitive position relative to determining the distribution of economic rent. The raising of finance for a mining project today may be inhibited by too biased an extraction of economic rent by entities other than the risk takers, the mining companies. ECONOMIC RENT A British economist (Ricardo D. McGraw-Hill, 1955) first proposed the concept of economic rent (See Drechsler, H.D. earlier in this Chapter.) Ricardo pointed out that no rent would be paid until land became scarce. Ricardo also stressed the distinction that the price of farm produce was not higher because of the rent paid on farm land but that the rent or price of more fertile farm land was higher because the price of produce is higher. This led to the concept that economic rent is not a cost and that it is therefore not price determining, but is itself price determined. Economic rent may be viewed as a cost if cost is equated with the concept of payment or distribution of income to any factor used in production. However, if it is a criterion that a payment must be made to the supplier of the factor of production, then economic rent is not truly a cost because it is not necessarily distributed or "paid" to the supplier. Consider the commodity A which occurs in three grades: Al, A2, and A3. Any grade may be used as a substitute for another grade in all of the industrial uses of A. However, in industries X and Y the different grades have different productivities. Table 1 shows the relative productivities of each grade in industries X and Y, and in all other industries [~]. [ ]

THE fundamental role of diffusion in many reactions occurring in solid metals has long been recognized, and there have been careful measurements of rates of diffusion in numerous alloy systems, but our understanding of the atomic mechanism by which diffusion occurs is scarcely in an advanced state 1-3 It is doubtful that this mechanism can ever he directly ascertained, rather, all imaginable mechanisms must be examined and the one that is in best accord with such data as can be obtained from suitably chosen experiments should be selected Because of its relative simplicity, diffusion in a system containing only one kind of atomic species-commonly called self-diffusion-is of considerable theoretical interest It may be expected that diffusion theory will not be advanced appreciably until a wide variety of diffusion experiments-of which diffusion in a chemical concentration gradient and self-diffusion are two important types-are carefully performed and inter-compared Aside from the purely theoretical interest in self-diffusion measurements, such studies will be of considerable engineering importance The rate of any process in a pure metal requiring the movement of atoms, of which recrystallization and creep are two familiar examples, will be understood more readily with the aid of self-diffusion data † Self-diffusion implies the diffusion of something into its exact counterpart, the detection of such a process is patently impossible, and it is-necessary to substitute for it the diffusion of one isotope (in this case radioactive) into another isotope (in this case stable) of the same chemical element There is, however, no reason to suppose that a radioactive atom will not diffuse at the same rate as its stable isotope, for all of the isotopes of the same element have exactly the same chemical properties, neither the difference in nuclear energy nor the difference in mass would be expected to exercise an important influence in this phenomenon In this sense, self-diffusion may be thought of as the diffusion of radioactive atoms down a radioactivity concentration gradient, just as usual diffusion is the diffusion of one kind of atone down its chemical concentration gradient The first measurements of self-diffusion ii ere made by von Hevesy4-6 using the radioactive lead isotope thorium B in ordinary lead The recent development of means for producing artificial radioactive elements has made possible similar measurements on gold,7,8 copper,2,9 and zinc 10 11 Many of the data that have been obtained are rather poor, and no adequate reason has been given for their poorness, it appears, however, that the unsatisfactory results are characteristic of the particular experimental procedure employed, and not of self-diffusion measurements in themselves The experimental technique that has yielded the poorer results is the deposition of a thin layer of radioactive atoms on the surface of a specimen and the determination of the rate of inward diffusion

If the safety factor of a mine hoisting rope is checked for the lowest depth, is the rope then safe for all levels? The answer here is no. A new set of volues is proposed. HOISTS for metal mines are seldom designed for one particular depth. They are intended for an ultimate load and depth with a given speed but are first used to hoist from a shallower depth, gradually working to the ultimate as development progresses. Sometimes the mine is not worked on the upper levels because of the kind and grade of ore, the mining of which depends on market conditions. In this case the hoist may be used in the same working shift to lift ore, for example, from the 1200 and the 4400-ft level. This means that the safety factor of the rope should be considered not only when it hoists from the greatest depth, but also when it hoists from the upper levels. According to present safety factor standards, a hoisting rope can have ample safety margin when hoisting from the lower or lowest level and still be shy of sufficient safety margin when hoisting from the upper levels. This will be shown by curves presented in this paper. The safety factor of a hoisting rope as defined by the U. S. Bureau of Mines' is the ratio of the static load to the tensile strength of the rope. It is calculated by dividing the breaking strength of the rope* In Fig. 1 curves A and B are plotted against the vertical suspended distance, which is the abscissa, and the factor of safety, the ordinates. Curve C is a smooth curve drawn through the midpoints of the steps of curve A and would more closely represent the minimum factor of safety for new rope for any particular depth. Curve D is a smooth curve drawn through the midpoints of the steps of Curve B and would more closely represent the minimum factor of safety when ropes should be discarded for any particular depth. If a new rope were applied with a minimum factor of safety, then the vertical distance or ordinate under curve D for any particular depth, divided by the vertical distance or ordinate under curve C, would represent the minimum percent of remaining area intact that could be allowed before the rope would be discarded. Also, that section of the ordinate between curve C and curve D is proportional to the section of the area of the new rope that could be allowed for wear and broken wires. In the course of an investigation of lost circulation, a new tool has been developed which gives a qualitative measure of the relative velocity between the fluid column in the borehole and the tool. The position of a diaphragm in the side wall of the instrument depends on the flow through the device. This position is established by using the conductive borehole fluid in a potentiometric circuit. The instrument has high sensitivity and can detect changes in velocity as low as. 5 ft/min. Lost circulation mud additives do not interfere with the satisfactory performance of the tool. In a number of circulation losses of the pressure induced type, the instrument has shown that the losses were confined to extremely narrow zones (less than I ft), indicating that such ruptures occur in a more or less horizontal rather than vertical plane as has often been assumed. This pinpointing of the zone of loss is important in remedial procedures since it allows the treatment to be applied directly to the point of loss rather than to the entire open hole. The device can also be employed for indicating points of entry of water in producing wells. INTRODUCTION The need for an improved means of locating the positions of lost returns zones became evident during an investigation of lost circulation difficulties in the Gulf Coast area.1 With instrumentation available at the time, it had been learned that, contrary to common belief, the position of the thief zone responsible for a given loss seldom coincided with the point of bit penetration at the time the loss was encountered. In the majority of cases, the losses were found to be occurring at some distance removed from the bottom of the hole —sometimes as much as a few thousand feet. This information, along with other observations made during the investigation, led to improved techniques' for dealing with lost circulation problems. Highlighted, however, among the results of this work and of similar studies subsequently conducted in drilling operations in other parts of the country, was the indication that a considerable portion of the difficulty and expense involved in treating prolonged circulation losses is due to the unsystematic application of remedial measures to one or more apertures of unknown position. Basis of Tests It is worth considering that if the troublesome formation could somehow be transported to the surface where it could be directly observed, there would likely be little difficulty in readily effecting a seal. Although this is a decided oversimplification of the situation, it does appear that the chief obstacles to similar ease of handling of a lost circulation zone in a well are lack of visibility and of ready accessibility. The latter handicap is overcome to a considerable extent by placement techniques already in use, and other procedures now in the process of development are expected to offer further improvement. But in the matter of visual observation, the technique to be presently described appears to afford a quite satisfactory substitute.

A study was made of the growth kinetics of B-brass layers in a-brass us y-brass diffusion couples in which both phases were saturated in the 6 phase. It was found that useful estimates can be made of the difhsion coefficients at the ß-phase interfaces from interface displacement data, which are relatively easy to measure experimentally; also, a useful estimate can be made of the mean heat of activation for diffusion from layer growth data. The effects of pressure on layer growth kinetics were explored and found to be consistent with a vacancy model for diffusion in 6 brass in both the disordered and ordered temperature range. 1 HE study of multiphase diffusion receives relatively little attention in comparison with that devoted to diffusion in homogeneous materials. Of the hundred or so papers on diffusion written each year,' only a few are devoted to the subject, and it is the rare review article2,3 that devotes any space to multiphase diffusional phenomena. This is unfortunate, since the metallurgist frequently encounters practical situations involving cementation processes such as cladding, protective coating of metals, and so forth in which he needs guidance of a fundamental nature. The investigation of multiphase diffusion phenomena is complicated by the fact that one must consider reactions at phase interfaces as well as the migration of atoms within the individual phases; these reactions cause the interfaces to be displaced within the diffusion zone. The relative displacement of two adjacent interfaces corresponds to the growth of an intermetallic layer, and it is not difficult to determine experimentally the kinetics of layer growth. In the past few years it has been pointed out4,5 that valuable fundamental information may be gained about diffusion coefficients and the concentrations at interfaces through a study of their motion. Accordingly, it is the purpose of this paper to report the results of an investigation of interface motion in a simple multiphase binary system. In the work reported herein, attention was focussed on the growth of a 6 -brass layer in a diffusion couple prepared from a- and y-brass compositions saturated with respect to the 6 phase. This particular system was chosen for a number of reasons. First, the bcc ß-brass phase is disordered for all compositions at temperatures above 468°C and becomes increasingly long-range ordered for all compositions at temperatures below 454° C;6,7 thus, the effects of a variation in order on interface displacement could be determined. Second, diffusion coefficients have already been obtained as a function of temperature in the ß phase both in the ordered and disordered Re- and a theoretical picture of the mechanism of diffusion in this and other ordered solutions is emerging.11'12 Third, some thermodynamic data are available for the a-, ß-, and ?-brass phases,13,4 and these data could be used to gain insight into questions of phase equilibria and concentrations at phase interfaces.

ABOUT the beginning of 1930, coal preparation had reached the stage where the cleaning of coal by liquid or air had become the order of the day. Since that time many new preparation plants have been installed in spite of the years of depression in the coal industry, and this is indicative of a trend wherein the coal producer found it expedient to manufacture a cleaner product in order to compete with other fuels. It was also about 1930 that, because of the difficulties encountered with fine coal in cleaning plants, dust collectors came into use. Both cleaning plants and dust collectors, therefore, were much discussed at the engineering meetings of the early 1930's. During these meetings the many advantages to be gained through the use of dust-collecting systems were pointed out by Hebley,1 Appleyard2 and others. The great possibilities of new markets for this product were emphasized and discussed at the same time; however, the disposal of the collected dust remained a problem. Since the purpose of dust collecting is to improve the preparation and, consequently, the salability of the coal, it seems illogical to return the collected dust to any of the coal being prepared for market use, as is done in preparation plants that include dust-collecting systems. The logical thing is to dispose of the dust in some useful and practical manner outside of the tipple. As a practical matter, this can be done in one or both of two ways; either by consuming the dust at the mine's own power plant or by marketing the dust direct to the consumer. The latter method not only offers the greatest opportunities, but is the most important, because of inequalities that may exist between the quantity of dust collected and the consuming capacity of the mine's power plant. In considering the more important marketing possibilities, we are confronted immediately with the problems connected with the handling and transportation of so fine a material. It is this problem, rather than the problem of finding new markets, that has been responsible for the lack of progress in the matter of dust disposal. It is the purpose of this paper to point out again some of the potential market outlets, and also to describe an existing system of handling and transporting coal dust. To the best of the writer's knowledge, this is the first and only operation in this country that has handled fine-mesh coal in bulk 50-ton lots direct to the consumer. POtential Markets for Fine-mesh Coal Dust In general, the potential market outlets would include any operation of which the pulverization of coal is a necessary part. To be more specific, a few of the better known operations of this type must include: colloidal-fuel plants, briquetting plants, "sea coal" distributing plants, water-purification plants and, obviously, pow-

S. imports have increased from 3 pct of the total supply in 1940 to 8 pct in 1949. • Mica has been successfully synthesized by scientists of the National Bureau of Standards. quartz, magnesite and bauxite, plus a fluorosilicate compound to act as a crystallizing agent, are heated to 2500°F in a platinum-lined crucible and as the furnace cools mica crystals grow. The key to parallel growth to make sheets is in precision control of temperature. • Inland Steel Co. of Chicago has taken an option to lease from Steep Rock Iron Mines, Ltd., of Canada -- a large undeveloped acreage in the vicinity of Steed Rock Lake, Ontario -- for the purpose of exploring and developing a new iron ore mine. The exploration program is expected to begin at an early date. •A 20-yr test conducted by the U. S. Bureau of Mines with the cooperation of Cleveland-Cliffs indicated that chemically treated timbers last from 2 to 3-1/2 times as long as untreated ones set in the same passageway. Of the three reagents used, zinc chloride gave the best result -- 13.3 yr as compared to 3.8 yr for untreated timber. •Senator Pat McCarran charged that President Truman used a "shotgun approach" to the taxation problem when he accused the mining industry of enjoying excessive depletion exemptions when actually mining taxes should be lowered. He introduced to the Senate a report of the National Advisory Council -recommending a decrease * The country's first graduate program of research and instruction in conservation of natural resources will begin at Yale in September. The Conservation Foundation is supplying $20,000 a year to finance the program. •Felix E. Wormser urged that adequate tariff protection should be provided to offset effects of devaluation on the domestic mining industry in an address before the Colorado Mining Association. He advocates tariffs rather than subsidy legislation, such as S. 2105, for the protection of the lead-zinc miners because the latter would promote inefficiency and "impair our priceless free market." •"It may be startling to realize that for the world's white population the per capita requirements for minerals have multiplied 30 times in 30 yr, or that more minerals have been mined in the last 40 yr than in all prior history." -- Evan Just, in "Mineral Depletion and Metal Supply." •The National City Bank in its monthly letter states that both management and the unions concede that there are too many miners trying to make a living out of the industry for its present market. •On Feb. 3 it was reported that 6000 Anaconda employes in Chile quit jobs in sympathy with striking telephone and electric workers. Tim history and efficiency of 40-ton capacity dump trucks for surface waste removal at the New Cornelia opencut copper mine, at Ajo, Ariz., are summed up in this paper. Tabulations of truck performance, together with detailed cost figures, prove the value of truck transportation for certain special operations at a large mine. Emphasis is given to the fact that truck transportation not only reduces the haulage costs but also reduces the breaking ground and shovel-loading costs per ton. The New Cornelia opencut copper mine is in the desert. The climate is ideal for seven months of the year, but the five summer months are uncomfortably hot. The elevation is 1820 ft. above sea level and the annual rainfall is approximately 6 inches. The ore body is a monzonite-porphyry deposit. The waste-rock capping consists of hard rhyolite, conglomerate and porphyry. All the material is hard and cannot be excavated without blasting. The rhyolite and conglomerate waste is very blocky. The weight of the rock in place is 2.16 tons per cubic yard. The average mine production per day is 22,000 tons of ore and 18,000 tons of waste rock, the latter consisting of surface rock and material within the ore body too low in grade to send to the concentrator. The rock is loaded by electric shovels with 4 1/2-cu. yd. dippers. The primary transportation of ore to the concentrator and waste to the dumps is by 30-yd. dump cars and oil-burning steam locomotives; therefore truck haulage of waste is a minor factor of the New Cornelia operation. However, as New Cornelia was one of the first mines to use large-capacity dump trucks for haulage, the results obtained are of interest. EQUIPMENT On the south side of the New Cornelia is a hill rising about 500 ft. above the normal surface elevation, roughly 1000 ft. in diameter at its base, called locally Arkansas Mountain peak. Exploratory drilling in this area developed additional ore that could be made accessible for open pit operation only by moving the mountain face a maximum distance of 400 ft. to the south. The slope of the mountain adjacent to the pit averaged 35°, and the small area involved precluded the use of train haulage for the removal of the 4,000,000 tons of waste estimated above the normal pit elevation. A study of dump-truck haulage at Boulder Dam and San Gabriel Dam led to the decision to use large-capacity end-dump trucks rather than smaller trucks, for the following reasons: I. The truck would have to withstand the impact of hard, heavy chunks, some of them weighing as much as 10 tons, which would be dumped from the 4 ½ -cu, yd. dipper. 2. The coarse, rocky, abrasive material would soon damage a light truck body. 3. The body of a small truck could not be efficiently loaded with coarse rock.

THE purpose of this paper is to present a method of designing safe and economical arch structures that are to be constructed of concrete or directly of original earth materials. The experimental data used to illustrate the design method are taken from Bucky and Fentress,1,2 and the application of the ideas presented by them is extended by obtaining an additional set of curves from which arch structures may be designed. This design method is based upon the following principles of similitude: A scalar model made of the same material as that of the full sized structure will behave similarly to its prototype if the density of the model is increased in the same proportion as its linear scale is decreased. Let R represent the scale or model ratio, namely, the ratio of a prototype linear dimension to the corresponding model linear dimension. The effect of increased density may be obtained by rotating the model in a centrifuge at a speed such that the centrifugal field exerts on the model an accelerative force R times the accelerative force of gravity. Under these conditions; (I) model unit stresses are equal to corresponding prototype unit stresses, (2) the ratio of the prototype deformation at a given point to the model deformation at a similar point is equal to the scale ratio, R, and (3) the model and the prototype will behave similarly within and beyond the elastic limits of strain. According to the above relations, such models can be used to solve the following problems: I. The dimensions of the most economical safe arch structure for a given load. 2. The maximum safe roof span underground for given geologic conditions. The procedure is described briefly as follows. Tests are made by rotating in a centrifuge a number of models that repIesent a variety of prototype loads and dimensions. From the experimental data, curves are plotted to show the relations between these loads and dimensions. The curves are used to solve directly the problems stated above. Structural design is based upon the working (safe) stress of the material of construction, which is established by applying a factor of safety to the experimentally determined ultimate strength of the material. In conformity with this principle, each model is gradually loaded until failure occurs. A safety factor is then applied to the results. If a safety factor of 4 is used, a given model at failure represents a safe prototype, the linear dimensions of which are equal to one-fourth the model ratio at failure times the corresponding model dimensions. For low-head pumping of small quantities of water, the water jet, or hydraulic educter, has been used to advantage by Eagle-Picher Mining and Smelting Co. in the Tri-State district. Water-jet pumps are used for draining sumps and pockets up to 15 ft. in depth. They have been used very successfully when only moderate amounts of water are encountered in taking up bottom. A small, easily handled unit is desirable in this work, especially while opening and deepening a new stope. Small air pumps are convenient but can be used only on the day shift, when air is available. Obviously, a jet pump of smaller capacity but operating 24 hr. prevents lost time at the start of each shift. No tests have been made on their power efficiency, but admittedly it is low. However, for certain kinds of work this is offset by their handiness, low initial cost, low upkeep, and reliability. They will handle slime and sand without ill effect, and will continue to pump indefinitely on air. This foolproof 24-hr. performance has led to their continued use at some places even after electric pumps with better power efficiency could have been installed. The success of jet pumps depends largely upon a cheap source of high-pressure water. Owing to mine depths in the Tri-State district, pump pressures range from 100 to 150 Ib. per sq. in. In many mines it is common practice to handle the normal inflow water with triplex pumps ranging in size from 3 to 8 in. The pumps operate 24 hr. per day, and, in order to handle emergency conditions, are speeded slightly faster than necessary to pump the normal inflow. The sump level is governed by controlling the by-pass water with a butterfly valve and float. This method is somewhat wasteful of power, but permits the pumps to operate with a minimum of attention. Such an installation is visited once a day to check lubrication. Hence, if some of this water, normally by-passed to the main sump, were used to operate a jet pump, the power cost could be considered low regardless of efficiency. Figs. I and 2 show two water jets that have done satisfactory work. The one in Fig. 2, made up entirely of pipe fittings, may be of interest partially because of its novelty, but does better work than its appearance indicates. The pipe fittings for this jet as shown cost $2.20. Some improvement in its design may be made by cutting out the 135 by 1¼-in. reducer to a smoother taper as shown by dotted lines. A 3-in. suction pipe is sometimes used in order that the discharge may be as straight as possible. A 2-in. discharge line has been used frequently, but 3-in. pipe is used where several hundred feet of discharge is required.
