This contribution is prompted by the fact that the writer has recently published an article" which has in part the same general conclusions as B. S. Butler's, namely, the form of the standard mineral paragenesis in hypogene deposits and the parallel transition from early high temperature acid to late low temperature alkaline or neutral solutions. Since the writer also recognizes that he is not fully qualified to discuss the formation of ore deposits as a chemical problem, this discussion will be limited to summarizing other observations and will suggest how Butler's Table II might be made more effective. The form of Butler's table is not unlike that widely used by European geologists30 in which the various minerals are related to the types of ore fluids-pegmatitic, pneumatolic and hydrothermal. Thus the decrease in temperature and change in pH of the ore- bearing fluids as recognized by Butler may also be paralleled by perhaps even greater changes in composition, density, and character.

The uranium mill at Gunnison, Colorado, started crushing ore Dec. 31,1957, and has now been operating four months. The acid leached ore is washed by counter-current decantation through a system of four classifiers and four thickeners and most of the dissolved uranium reports in the overflow from the first washing thickener. This uranium is extracted from the aqueous pregnant solution by solvent extraction using di-2-ethyl hexyl phosphoric acid and tri-butyl phosphate dissolved in a high-flash-point kerosene as the extracting organic. The pregnant organic is then stripped with soda ash solution. The uranium bearing soda ash solution is filtered to remove insoluble carbonates and any sediment reaching that part of the circuit. The clarified carbonate pregnant solution is then acidified to 3 pH, heated to 180°F to drive off the last traces of CO2, and the uranium finally precipitated as yellow cake with MgO.

(Read at the Philadelphia Meeting, February, 1878.) IN September last I had my attention called by Mr. R. G. Leckie to a deposit of nickel in the township of Orford, province of Quebec. In many ways it has proved to be a subject of great interest. As this ore is, as far as I can learn, entirely new in mineralogy and metallurgy, it has seemed to me that it would be a matter of interest to the Institute to have laid before it, in a short paper, the peculiarities I have met with in studying it. This deposit of nickel was first described by Dr. T. Sterry Hunt, our President, in the Geology of Canada, 1863, p. 738, in the following terms : "The general diffusion of nickel throughout the magnesian rocks of the Quebec group has been already noticed. It has, however, never been met with in any considerable quantities in these rocks, although workable deposits of its ores may reasonably be looked for

THE year 1937 started off most hopefully for the metal industry but the prices for nonferrous metals declined after reaching a peak in the first quarter. E. & M. J. average prices for March were: -electrolytic copper f.o.b. refinery for domestic delivery 15.775c., lead 7.19c., and zinc 7.38c. There was the usual talk of shortages and the accompanying peak in the market prices of securities of producing companies. In retrospect it now appears that this was the peak of general security prices as well and of most commodity prices. On Dec. 1 copper was back to 11c., lead to 5c., and zinc to 5.5c. At the same time metal security prices had fallen to less than 40 per cent of their March highs. This has not been a purely domestic phenomenon. Metal prices have followed a similar course in London, in spite of the fact that in all three metals a tariff wall separates the domestic market from the foreign. There is nothing in the record to suggest that planning has so far had any stabilizing effect on prices. It is doubtful whether anybody will he found to claim credit for the planning. Strong evidence supports the conclusion that domestic demand for these and the other metals has been dammed back by the uncertainties confronting those who are considering long term construction commitments. This is particularly true with the public utilities, who are the largest consumers of copper and lead. If the plans were designed to maintain employment rather than to maintain political control of the Government, it would appear that they should be discarded. The course of the steel industry has been followed so closely in the press that no comment is necessary to indicate its similarity.

MORE or less contradictory findings as to the most satisfactory feed for concentration tables of the Wilfley type is shown by the diversity of opinion among experimenters. Prof. R. H. Richards,l as a result of his work, favors classification. On the other hand the work of Messrs. Cox, Gibbins, and Porter,' of McGill University, points in general to the desirability of screen-sized feed The ore used was obtained from the West mill of the Bunker Hill and Sullivan Mining and Concentrating Co., Kellogg, Idaho, and consisted of argentiferous galena in a gangue of quartzite and siderite. The natural feed was taken from the launder supplying the Fahrenwald classifier. Classified feed was collected from each of the ten spigots of this same classifier. From the natural feed the screen-sized feed was pre- pared in the laboratory. All three types of table feed were therefore derived from the actual mill circuit of a large plant.

One item of general interest in MINING ENGINEERING Trends, May 1952 gives the wrong impression of the scale of the ilmenite operations in North Carolina It also implies there are known deposits of rutile which "guarantee self-sufficiency for many years" So far as we know this is not true At present, rutile is in such short supply in the United States that the Defense Mineral Authority is encouraging prospecting for new deposits So far none have been found of any consequence and our needs have to be met largely from the deposits near Jacksonville, Fla, and rutile imported from Australia JAY P WOOD VICE-PRESIDENT HUMPHREYS GOLD CORPORATION The reference to self-sufficiency was meant to apply to the ilmenite-bearing sands, not rutile, but improper phrasing failed to make this clear However, the press release that the Glidden Co circulated stated that this deposit of ilmenite was one of the largest in North America -Editor

Africa (communication to the Secretary*) :—About fourteen years ago, in southeastern Missouri,I used a method for the wet determination of lead which closely resembles the modified sulphate-chromate method described by Mr.. Guess. The principal difference, however, is, that after dissolving the lead chromate in hydrochloric acid, the chromic acid is determined by means of a standard solution of ferrous sulphate. The method, which I believe is still in use in southeastern Missouri, was found to be convenient and accurate for the determination of lead in the ores and various products of the mills and furnaces in that district, but it was never used for complex ores. A number of determinations of lead in mill-tailings were made in the year 1891; a few of these results are given in Table I. Table I.—Determinations of Lead in MilL-Tailings by Wet Assay.

B. S. Crocker (Screened Ore Used for Fine Grinding at Lake Shore Mines, P. 499) was born in Toronto, Ont. and attended Saint Andrews College and University of Toronto. He received a B.A. and M.A. degree. He was graduated with honors and received a fellowship in metallurgy. Mr. Crocker did post-graduate research at University of Toronto from 1933 to 1934. He was employed by Beattie Gold Mines in 1933. He did research in milling at Lake Shore Mines from 1934 to 1936 and from 1936 to 1940 was head of experiment laboratory. At the present time he is mill superintendent with Lake Shore Mines at Kirkland Lake, Ont., Canada. Grinding, cyanidation, flotation and roasting are of special interest to him. He is a member of AIME. Mr. Crocker has presented several papers before C.I.M.M. and also holds membership in this society as well as Professional Engineers of Ontario. Skiing, yacht racing and photography are his favorite hobbies.

Amphoteric surfactants are heteropolar organic compounds which possess at least two functional (ionic) oppositely charged groups per molecule. The ones studied are manufactured by General Mills and possess one or more long hydrocarbon chains plus a carboxyl group (s) and an amino or imino group. Hallimond tube and M. C. Fuerstenau micro flotation cell flotation tests were performed on quartz and hematite as a function of pH using amphoteric, cationic, and anionic surfactants as collectors. For the most part, flotation could be correlated with an interaction of charged groups on the collectors with oppositely charged sites on the minerals plus association of hydrocarbon chains. The comparison of flotation in a Hallimond tube and an M.C. Fuerstenau cell shows that one should use care in using the latter if one excludes an additional frother from the system. Also, it is interesting to note that sometimes greater collector concentrations are required in the Fuerstenau cell for comparable flotation recoveries.

(San Francisco Meeting, October, 1911.) WHILE the occurrence of phosphorus in coking-coal has assumed less importance with the development of the open-hearth method of steel-making, it may not be without interest to note the form in which phosphorus exists in one particular coal-seam. In the examination of what is known as the Big seam, which outcrops a few miles west of Columbiana, Ala., my attention was called to the distribution through the coal, in the form of minute veins and particles, of a resinous-looking substance. A small amount of this was selected, and was provisionally identified as evansite (Al6, P2 014. 18 Aq). Subsequently, through the courtesy of Dr. Sharshall Grasty of the Geological Department of the University of Virginia, I was able to secure an additional amount of material, which was purified down to about 0.3 g. This was examined by Prof. John J. Porter of the University of Cincinnati, and gave the following partial analysis

Hydrogeological techniques were used to solve problems of slope stability in open-pit mines of the Eufaula bauxite district, Ala. Geologic and hydrologic data were evaluated and used to design a system of dewatering wells to enable the operators to mine bauxite more efficiently and economically. Walls of open-pit mines in the district were subsequently stabilized by the operation of the dewatering system. Three open- pit mines, each at varying stages of the mining process, of the A.P. Green Refractories Co., were used to develop a sequential series of guidelines that indicate how to effectively remove ground water from the formations surrounding the ore bodies in the district. The use of sound engineering principles in well design, in combination with the correct interpretation of the pit hydrology provided the basis for solutions of the slope-stabilization problem and aided in the economical removal of bauxite from mines of the district.

The fifth annual meeting of the Columbia Local Section was held in Wallace, Idaho, November 19-20, 1915, with headquarters at the Samuel Hotel. The afternoon session scheduled for November 19, was adjourned to give the members an opportunity to hear the testimony in the case between the Alameda and Success mining. companies on trial in the Superior Court of Shoshone County. The Success Company offered some excellent mine models and maps and furnished some interesting testimony. In the evening a technical session was held at which Stanly A. Many studies have been made of the microflotation of quartz (de Bruyn, 1955; Fuerstenau, 1957; Somasundaran, 1964; Smith, 1973; Fuerstenau, 1976; and Smith and Akhtar, 1976) and alumina (Somasundaran, 1964; Smith and Akhtar, 1976; Fuerstenau and Palmer, 1976; Fuerstenau and Akhtar, 1976; Fuerstenau and Yamada, 1963; Modi and Fuerstenau, 1960) using various anionic and cationic heteropolar hydrocarbon surfactants as collectors. A few studies have been made on these materials using amphoteric hydrocarbon collectors (Wrobel 1969 and 1970; Smith. Haddenham, and Schroeder, 1973; Gupta and Smith, 1975) and only a few studies have been made on the use of fluorocarbon surfactants as flotation collectors Cooke and Talbot, 1955; Somasundaran and Kulkami, 1973). The present investigation compares microflotation response of the two minerals in hydrocarbon and fluorocarbon collector systems of the anionic, cationic, and amphoteric types. An attempt is made to relate flotation response of the minerals to their electrokinetic behavior and the pKa values of the collectors.

The creation of unsymmetrical vertical or horizontal fractures in a producing well will result in a unique distortion of the normal shut-in pressures existing at the four surrounding wells. An electrical model study has been made to show how the shut-in pressures at the wells surrounding the fractured producing well may he used to estimate the size and orientation of vertical or horizontal fractures. The pressure differences at the four surrounding wells are recorded during production from the fractured well. The resulting pressure dato are matched from a table of several hundred possible fracture combinations. The table refers to the figure showing the effective size and orientation of the commercially created fracture. INTRODUCTION The creation of commercial fractures about oil and gas wells has led to considerable speculation as to the size and shape of the fractures. It is important that the size and shape be known in certain instances, especially when pressure maintenance programs are to be initiated. It was shown that if knowledge of a vertical fracture could be found that such information may be utilized in planning a waterflooding or gas cycling program and that in some cases the fractures might be utilized very effectively.' Other work showed that it may be desirable to create "pancake" fractures in certain reservoirs but that they should exist in a desirable range.' If the fractures are too large, they should be plugged prior to initiating a pressure maintenance program. If an irregular shaped "pancake" fracture is created, it is desirable to know the orientation of this fracture because similar but unreported studies have shown that "pancake" fractures may or may not substantially affect the sweep efficiencies and performance of the flooding or cycling program. Consequently, it may be desirable in some instances to estimate the effective size and orientation of the fracture. ANALOG An electrical model was used in making this study. The electrical model consisted of a circular reservoir approximately 8 in. in diameter, 1 in. thick and was filled with a dilute salt solution. A copper band formed the periphery of the reservoir. A vertical fracture was simulated by a copper strip soldered to the wire well located in the center of the reservoir. Vertical copper strips of various lengths and orientation were soldered to the wire well to represent vertical fractures in the reservoir. In studies reported here on vertical fractures it was arbitrarily assumed that two fractures originated at the well and extended out into the reservoir. An electrical potential was imposed between the wire well and the periphery of the tank. Plots of the iso-potentials are shown in Figs. 1 through 9. This model provides the steady-state isopotentials existing in a uniform, homogeneous circular reservoir having a vertically fractured well at its center. The permeability of the fracture is much greater than the permeability of the matrix proper. The effects of gravity are neglected. •Mineral Development Corp. of Salt Lake City, Utah purchased the Somerset and Oliver coal mines from the Kaiser Steel Corp. The mines are located at Somerset, Colo., about 75 miles east of Grand Junction, Colo. Somerset Town, with housing for 600 persons was included in the transaction. The mines employ 115 miners and have a combined capacity of 1750 tons per day. The Minerals Development Corp. is headed by Claude P. Heiner and is controlled by Godfrey L. Cabot, Inc. of New York and Boston. The Cabot Company is a major producer of carbon black. • The Dept. of Interior has announced that the name of the Defense Minerals Administration will be changed to Defense Minerals Exploration Administration. The new name of this defense agency more nearly describes its duties, since the mineral programming, procurement and claimant functions of the former DMA have been transferred to the Defense Minerals Procurement Agency. C. O. Mittendorf, formerly acting administrator of DMA, is serving as acting administrator of the new DMEA.

THE electrolytic refining of metals for the removal of undesirable impurities has become a recognized necessity in the nonferrous field. Copper, lead, zinc, nickel, silver and gold have been produced in this manner for years. The United States Metals Refining Co., realizing that considerable quantities of lead and tin could be made available to the trade if a satisfactory method of purification of these metals could be established, decided to investigate the possibilities of electrolytic solder. In cooperation with Dr. Edward F. Kern, of the School of Mines at Columbia University, the company developed a process of electrolytic refining of lead-tin alloys using a tin-lead fluosilicate electrolyte. A pilot plant was installed in November, 1927, and the commercial unit was put in October, 1929. Since that time thousands of tons of electrolytic solder have been produced in this plant and consumed by all branches of industry that use solder.

Utah Power & Light Company is an electric utility serving approximately 1.8 million people in Utah, Idaho, and waning. In order to supply coal to fuel power plants, Utah Power & Light awns three mines in central Utah. Planning for these mines is aided by a computer program developed by the staff mining engineers. This program, when supplied with the pertinent seam and mining configuration data, calculates the time to mine each section. This allows the planning engineer to estimate accurately the time required to extract pillar sections or develop longwall panels. The program's greatest benefit, however, is its ability to allow the engineer to examine quickly, different combinations of possible mine layouts to determine the most efficient plan. Computer aided mine planning has been used at Utah Power & Light Company since 1979, and has significantly improved the accuracy and quality of mine planning.

BY the term making an "electrical log" the authors designate an operation conceived for the purpose of determining electrically the characters of formations traversed in drilling, the determination being carried out by means of measuring the electrical resistivities of the rocks along the uncased portions of drill-holes. As in the case of an ordinary core record, this process connotes a geological studs of the strata, and for that reason it is given a similar designation. The paper is divided into three parts, of which the first deals with the resistivities of rocks in general, since it is through this electrical parameter that they are to be characterized. The second deals with the technique, and the third with the description of practical applications of the electrical logs.
