The question of prediction and prevention of dynamic events û rock bursts (RB), tectonic rock burst (TRB) and mining-induced earthquakes (MIE), induced by large-scale mining, are discussed. The mine itself and the host geological environment are taken as a natural-technical system (NTS) whose evolution is characterised by alteration of the adaptation-bifurcation (catastrophes) periods. So, to predict TRB-MIE means to predict the limiting NTS states that are determined from the NTS geological monitoring data, and to prevent the said events means to control the processes of rock deformation and failure within the critical zone. The study considers particular examples of how TRB-MIE-events are predicted and prevented in apatite mines, Kola peninsula, Russia.

It was Harold McMillan, Prime Minister of England 30 years ago, who used the phrase "The Wind of Change" to describe political events in Africa in his day. So well did this phrase capture the spirit of the time that it echoed around the world, and the echo has never stopped. Change is the constant factor in the society in which we live and everyone of us has had experience of the effect which it has had on our professional and personal lives. Change will not stop, it will continue at an increasing rate and the questions we must answer are how do we prepare ourselves to meet the challenge of future change and how do we take advantage of the opportunities which it will bring? It is these questions which I wish to discuss in this address.

This paper cites selected, prominent examples of current, major projects in Southern Africa in both the mining and civil fields. Differences and similarities in the life cycle of mining and civil projects are discussed. A closer relationship between the mining and civil fraternities is beginning to develop and should be encouraged because of the resultant exchange of experience and technology which benefits both disciplines. An attempt is made to assess future potential for new, major projects and trends in the implementation thereof.

The following thesis is an outcome of an investigation undertaken by the writer, at the suggestion of Professor Skeats, of the dykes and associated auriferous reefs of the Walhalla-Wood's Point belt, with the view of determining what relation, if any, existed between the petrological nature and the extent of llietasomatic alteration undergone by the dykes, and the genesis and localization of the gold.Although the greater part of the writer's time in the field and laboratory was occupied in studying the dykes and auriferous occurrences, a study was also made of the general geology as a basis for the special investigation. In addition, it soon became evident in the field that secondary enrichment had played a marked part in re-concentrating the gold and some interesting data in this connection have been collected. For example, indubitable evidence has been found of nuggets of gold having been formed by secondary processes.

Whilst employed by Dyno Nobel as the Technical Services Engineer û Brisbane, I was asked, as part of a contractual agreement, to look at optimising PioneerÆs blasting process to provide the most effective rock to the new crushing and screening plant. This paper details the preliminary blast designs and practices that have been in use at the quarry and the initial changes made to these designs, and the effect they have had on the excavation and crusher performance.

PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals (PT NHM) is an Indonesian joint venture company owned by Newcrest Mining Limited (75 per cent) and PT Aneka Tambang (Persero) (25 per cent). PT NHM operates two underground gold mines, Kencana and Toguraci at the Gosowong mine site in North Halmahera District, North Maluku Province, Indonesia.On 8 February 2016, a major ground movement occurred in the K-Link orebody of the Kencana underground mine, effectively blocking the only two access ways to the stoping area. Following mine clearance, it was found that a Solo production drill rig operator, who had been drilling in the Level 10 Extraction Drive was still underground, cut off from the rest of the mine by the ground movement.Communication, nutritional and logistic supply to the trapped operator was established with the breakthrough of two diamond drill holes. A range of technical expertise and opinions from both on and off-site were sought and two options were chosen for implementation of the rescue operation. Much of the theory upon which the Sublevel Caving (SLC) method is based was developed in Scandinavia many years ago. It was based mainly on æbinÆ theory and æellipsoid of drawÆ configurations derived from sandbox models. In many cases, classical SLC layouts influenced by these early theories obtained relatively poor results. Early dilution entry, low tonnage factors and low recoveries were commonly experienced. SLC soon gained the reputation of being a high dilution, low recovery and development intensive method. This led to SLC falling into disfavour generally, other than as a pillar reclamation method used at the end of the life of mines. More recently a number of mines, notably those in Australia, have adopted SLC as a primary extraction method and have achieved good recovery results. The reason for the better results is believed to be an outcome of modifications in some of the basic design parameters and operational procedures. This has led to questions being raised regarding the original æbin theoryÆ assumptions and classical SLC layout designs. It is clear that the fragmentation and flow characteristics occurring in a choke blast situation (compaction of waste, variable size and shape of fragmentation throughout the ring) conflicts significantly with the assumptions of regular loose flow of uniform, fine grained, material in a bin. Interactive versus independent draw conditions can also materially effect the outcome of a SLC operation. The good results obtained more recently can only be explained by using ænewÆ models of behaviour, which have to a large extent been borrowed from block caving. If these models are correct, they point to a number of design and operational changes that can be applied to improve the effectiveness of SLC. This paper discusses the factors that may not have been fully considered in early SLC design and modelling. It emphasises the importance of delayed dilution entry as a primary objective of sound SLC design and provides a basis for efficient SLC design and operation.

Decreasing the gas content in the worked seam by degassing before the start of winning has proven its worth in some areas of German hard coal mines. On the one hand, it removes the risk of gas/coal outbursts and on the other hand it reduces the gas inflow into the longwall. The underground experiences of the last 30 years have led to a æhit listÆ of coal seams with respect to their suitability to predegassing. Trials in the DMT laboratory and also results gained in the deposit show that the suitability of a seam for predegassing depends on its rank. In seams with volatile matter of 20 - 30 per cent, high efficiency ratings are achieved as a rule, with lower ratings both in seams with lower and with higher content of volatile matter.If the rock pressure is unusually high, the efficiency rating of the predegassing is lower, even in seams which would normally be suitable for this process. Under unfavourable conditions, for example below or above residual pillars, in-seam boreholes cannot be drilled successfully and the method is not practical. But if the worked seam was already stress relieved, the predegassing has an optimal efficiency. Latest investigations show that the distance between the in-seam boreholes can be extended. But in that case, the time necessary to reach the same reduction of the gas content increases considerably.

This paper describes the mining methods and strategy used to extract the 5 Orebody crown pillar at the Isa Lead Mine over the past five years. The bulk of the crown pillar was extracted by the use of sublevel open stope method. An uphole bench stope was mined to scavenge the remaining ore. Geomechanical issues associated with the crown pillar extraction are described. Stope sizes were gradually increased on a stope by stope basis. This has allowed the maximising of ore recovery while relevant risks were managed. The principles in designing ore rib pillars against various types of fill materials are also described.

The Australian Centre for Geomechanics (ACG) held two workshops in 2019—one in Australia and one in Canada—to discuss processes and methods currently used in the mining industry for stope design and reconciliation. In practice, this work strives to optimise stope performance and aims to maximise ore recovery (minimise underbreak), while minimising dilution (overbreak). One of the key findings from the workshops was that current stope design practices, almost exclusively, rely on some versions of the empirical Stability Graph methods developed in 1980s. Although robust and useful at the feasibility study stage, there are a number of inherent shortcomings with this approach. The Stability Graph’s limitations first lie in that it cannot assess underbreak, which is a very important measure of performance. Furthermore, the method doesn’t consider a number of factors which often have a critical influence on stope stability, for example, drilling and blasting or the presence of faults. Given the current industry standard practice, there is a great opportunity to reinvent the stope design process to optimise performance. A finding of the workshops was that every mine quantifies stope performance in terms of volume reconciliation with a focus on dilution and ore losses, and reconciling metal tonnes recovered from the mill. Many mines further investigate stope performance by looking at individual stope faces and the causes for the deviations between the planned stope shape and the measured cavity. Recent research at the ACG has shown that investigating overbreak and underbreak at a higher resolution is a powerful way to identify the root causes of overbreak and underbreak. Finer scale assessment is achieved using an octree analyses, which effectively divides the relevant stope volume into cubes on the scale of a metre and produces many tens of thousands of data points. The octree data structure and subsequent analysis underpins a data-driven stope design methodology. The ACG is currently developing a design approach based on multivariate modelling methods that can account for the many variables that influence stope performance and forecast stope overbreak and underbreak results. Back-analysing stopes based on octree reconciliation results provides a rich database for training the model. Once the model can achieve reliable forecasting of overbreak and underbreak, an interactive drill-and-blast design will allow for the assessment of different firing strategies to optimise stope performance.

Broken Hill metallurgists have been responsible for some of the most important developments in mineral processing technology. These occurred mainly in two periods, 1902 - 15 and 1955 - 70. Mineral flotation was developed as an industrial process during the first period and this happened in two stages, the recovery of zinc minerals from the tailings dump accumulated during the gravity concentration of the oxidised ores and the selective recovery of galena and marmatite during flotation of the primary ores. During the second period fast accurate analytical procedures were developed to provide rapid assessment of process performance, and new means of controlling the process were devised which improved throughputs, grades and recoveries. These technological successes were due to the skills of the metallurgists and the commitment of the companies. They brought large financial returns. They were achieved under difficult circumstance. There are important lessons to be learnt from these successes.

The Australian minerals sector has a shortage of skilled professionals to satisfy an industry that is experiencing renewed vitality. Graduate numbers are low throughout Australia and the world, while economic rationalisation is seeing many educational institutions downsize, or even close, their minerals-related programs. In addition to requiring more entry-level graduates, minerals producers are looking to update the skills of their current workforce to keep up with the industryÆs continuing technological revolution. To address the issue the Minerals Council of Australia (MCA) endorsed collaboration between several Australian minerals producers and a team of universities to generate the Mineral Tertiary Education Council, or MTEC. MTEC recently initiated a venture to increase the availability of professionals with relevant skills to the minerals industry. Primarily aimed at delivering postgraduate programs, the initiative will allow graduates from other disciplines to æconvertÆ to the minerals sector as well as provide professional development training to an existing work force. This venture represents a novel approach in that courses will be delivered by more than one institution and will employ innovative teaching materials with flexible and remote delivery formats. The programs will cater specially for professional development in the minerals sector, which generally requires high flexibility due to the nature of work conditions and locations.

Commonly held ideas about effective training have long emphasised the importance of realism. Realistic training builds better experience among the trainees and a better perspective on the training material, making training more effective. While great strides have been made in this realm for mine safety and mine rescue training there are still areas that can be improved. One possible area is the expanded use of a mine fire simulation program where the migration of gases and smoke can be realistically displayed in an emergency, and outcomes varied as different conditions are being simulated. The use of mine fire simulation software potentially allows for the creation of more realistic scenarios in that smoke advance rates can be measured and recreated in evacuation scenarios, or that gas readings in mine rescue training can be dynamically and realistically changed to show the effect that time has on the fire scenario.CITATION:Slaughter, C and Tien, J C, 2015. The underground mine environment is inherently complex and hazardous, which necessitates ensuring mining workers’ safety. With the fast development of AI techniques, human activity recognition has become a crucial task to enhance daily life, especially in such challenging settings. This enables automatic monitoring and detection of the mine workers’ activities and operations on a large scale, which leads to better support of workers’ safety and welfare. Existing traditional uni-modal approaches, which use data of one single modality, suffer from low data quality and noise, so they struggle to generalise effectively in such extreme conditions (Li et al, 2022). As underground mines have extreme and complicated environments, such as dust, low light, signal interference, and rugged terrain, uni-modal approaches could not resolve such obstacles and are not suitable for real-world deployment. Multi-modal human activity recognition approaches could use data from multi-modal sources, thus capturing complementary information and producing robust and effective performance in recognising and monitoring mining activities. In this case, designing suitable multi-sensor hardware and AI activity recognition models has become a pivotal task. Producing efficient multi-modal approaches for edge deployment is another problem worth exploring.

In the period since 1989 the Yabulu Nickel Refinery of Queensland Nickel has undergone a transformation both in terms of the nickel laterite ore feed and the refined nickel product. These two changes were mutually supporting, as will be shown in the following paper. It had been realised since the early-1980s that the Greenvale orebody would be exhausted by 1992. Consequently planning had been in progress throughout the 1980s for the importation of overseas ore as a replacement for the Greenvale ore. The existence of extensive lateritic ore deposits in New Caledonia and Indonesia made these locations the natural focus of attention. With the three Japanese ferronickel smelters sourcing their nickel garnierite ore feed from these locations it was relatively easy for the miners to supply the overlying limonite ore to Yabulu. This limonite ore was previously discarded as waste. The Yabulu refinery now receives about 85 per cent of its ore from these two overseas sources. The transition from Greenvale ore to imported ore occurred gradually between 1989 and 1993. It was during the ore importation planning stage of the mid 1980s that Queensland Nickel commenced the technical investigation which led to the ammoniacal solvent extraction (ASX) plant installation and the product change from nickel oxide to nickel metal.

Despite advances in technology, the Australian underground coal mining industry continues to have incidents involving spontaneous combustion. Managing these incidents relies heavily on understanding the state of the event as it develops and controls are applied. Gas analysis plays a major role in aiding this interpretation. This interpretation is based upon laboratory testing of coal samples under conditions very different to those found in an underground coal mine. This paper will explore the links between laboratory data and actual events. It will highlight the difficulties of using laboratory data. It will outline the relevance of laboratory data and how it can be usefully applied to manage spontaneous combustion events as well as in establishing relevant trigger action response plans to facilitate early detection and control of such events. The paper will identify some of the factors that need to be applied when adapting laboratory data to apply to the underground coal mine. It will outline the need for comprehensive knowledge of the local conditions and gas concentrations to be expected at all locations in an underground coal mine. Further, it will demonstrate the need for mine environment monitoring to go beyond simply measuring gas concentrations but also to include reliable atmospheric pressure, temperature and air velocity monitoring.CITATION:Cliff, D, 2013. Extensive gold mining activity û dominantly alluvial û has taken place in the Sofala-Wattle Flat district since the 1850s.This work will have located most, if not all, of the visible sources for the gold in current stream systems.Also, there are many gold bearing elevated Tertiary alluvial terraces in the district which may confuse possible gold signals from primary hard rock sources in the streams.Associated element signatures eg As and other chalcophiles, will discriminate non-alluvial signatures but will not necessarily distinguish non gold bearing mineralisation.Both trace elements and conventional gold analyses will dominantly re-identify known occurrences. Conventional BCL sampling is considered misleading as experience from the Oberon area to the south of Sofala demonstrated that BCL sampling was very sensitive û perhaps too sensitive.All occurrences û major or minor û of gold will be detected (Gatehouse, 1992). To improve on BCL sampling, a small, -120# sample with selective duplication was recommended to screen coarse-grained gold anomalism and a program of sampling covering an area thought to be prospective was enacted.Samples returning anomalous Au were analysed in duplicate and if the results demonstrated reproducibility, indicating fine gold only, the sample site was assigned a high priority.It was found that most of the reproducible samples clustered in one area û Spring Gully. The results of this sampling program led to immediate identification and, ultimately, the successful delineation of the Spring Gully gold deposit near Wattle Flat.

Sinter quality depends heavily on the mineral phases, textures and physical structure of the sinter, which are formed upon solidification of the sinter melt. The interaction of sinter initial melt with its surrounding materials will impact the properties of the sinter melt and consequently the solidified structure and quality of resultant sinter. Spreading and penetration are two important phenomena dictating the interaction of the initial melt with its surrounding materials, such as nuclei and adhering fines. In the present study, the penetration behaviour of an initial melt into various natural iron ore substrates of different ore types during sintering was studied using a laboratory scale penetration testing procedure. The penetration depth and width were found to increase with temperature and vary with the type of iron ore due to their unique pore structure and mineralogical texture.

For the past 150 years, drilling and blasting has been an integral part of the underground mining industry in Australia. Ever since Busby's Bore was developed using black powder to supply Sydney with water, miners have been drilling holes, filling them with explosives and blasting the rock into a manageable size. The drilling was fairly straight forward but the explosives were always a mysterious commodity. It worked, but how and why? The explosives industry is now working much closer to the mining industry to dispel these mysteries and also to aid the advancement of explosive technology. This paper looks at the results of these advances in the form of explosives, accessories and blasting systems.

This paper summarises the current status of the mining sector in Poland in terms of vertical transport system safety. Selected results of research programs conducted at the AGH-UST relating to mine hoist system safety are reviewed. The conclusions support the notion that the costs of vertical transport systems can be reduced, while at the same time maintaining the required safety and reliability levels. Novel solutions: movable fender beams HWR, linings modar« and the integrated shock absorbers PHH for conveyance guiding systems fully confirm this hypothesis.
