PART 1 APPLICATION AND TERMINOLOGY 1.1 Supplements Other Requirements – The Instrument supplements other continuous disclosure requirements of securities legislation that apply to reporting issuers in all business sectors. 1.2 Evolving Industry Standards and Modifications to the Instrument- Mining industry practice and professional standards are evolving in Canada and internationally. The Securities Regulatory Authorities will monitor developments in these fields and will solicit and consider recommendations from their staff and external advisers as to whether modifications to the Instrument are appropriate. 1.3 Application of the Instrument -The definition of “disclosure” under the Instrument includes oral and written disclosure. The Instrument establishes standards for disclosure of scientific and technical information regarding mineral projects and requires that the disclosure be based on a technical report or other information prepared byor under the supervision of a qualified person. The Instrument does not apply to disclosure concerning petroleum, natural gas, bituminous sands or shales, groundwater, coal bed methane or other substances that do not fall within the meaning of the term “mineral project” in section 1.1 of the Instrument. 1.4 Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves Definitions - The Instrument incorporates by reference the definitions and categories of mineral resources and mineral reserves as set out in the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (the “CIM”) Definition Standards on Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves (the “CIM Definition Standards”) adopted by the CIM Council on November 14, 2004, as amended. 1.5 Best Practices Guidelines for Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves - A qualified person classifying a mineral deposit as a mineral resource or mineral reserve should follow the CIM Estimation of Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves Best Practice Guidelines adopted by CIM on November 23, 2003, as amended. Abstract - The Archean Superior Province craton and the Paleoproterozoic Penokean Orogen are major geological sub-divisions of the southern Canadian Shield and account for much of the metallic mineral production of North America. The Superior Province experienced a mainly Archean history involving several cycles of volcanism, plutonism, and tectonism, primarily in the Neo-archean but also including Meso-archean and Paleo-archean cycles as well. Superior Province consists of northern and southern high-grade gneiss sub-provinces and a broad central region of alternating greenstone-granite and metasedimentary belts. The sub-provinces may represent tectonic terranes assembled in the Archean by accretion processes similar to those of some Phanerozoic orogens. Most of the mineral deposits, including VMS, intrusion-related, and lode gold deposits occur in the greenstone- granite sub-provinces where they were formed in an interval of 100 million years or less around 2.7 Ga. The Paleoproterozoic Penokean Orogen comprises supracrustal sequences deposited in fault-controlled epicratonic and rifted margin settings developed on and about the Superior craton. Deposition of the ~2.4 Ga Huronian Supergroup and its paleoplacer uranium deposits in the eastern Penokean Orogen, and their pre-2.2 Ga deformation, were probably unrelated to the deposition of the ~2.1 Ga Marquette Range and Animikie groups and their major taconite iron formations in the west. However, these sequences were deformed together during the ~1.85 Ga Penokean Orogeny which resulted when an assembly of island arcs containing VMS deposits, the Wisconsin magmatic terrane, collided with the Superior block and its Paleoproterozoic cover. The Sudbury structure with its world class Ni-Cu-PGE ores was also formed at this time, possibly triggered by meteorite impact. Metallogenic patterns in the Paleoproterozoic rocks were controlled by a complex interplay of factors including tectonically controlled variations in deposition and deformation, distribution of mineralization in the Archean basement, and oxyatmoversion, the transition from anoxic to oxygenic atmospheric conditions that occurred during the deposition of these sequences.

"High-risk underwater mining operations necessitate characterizing spatial heterogeneity and resource uncertainty. Local average subdivision is a method of simulating spatial deposit variability inside a cell through a sequence of discretization stages, during which a cell is further subdivided into four or eight cells. New developments are presented to validate simulated deposit models and deal with point measurements of geotechnical and ore-grade properties. This paper illustrates the relevance of translating spatial deposit variability into financial or operational performance indicators during underwater resource exploitation. Two synthetic case studies highlight the challenges of underwater mining in relation to production plans and equipment selection.RÉSUMÉ Les opérations d’extraction minière subaquatique à risque élevé exigent une caractérisation de l’hétérogénéité spatiale et de l’incertitude de la ressource. La moyenne locale de subdivision est une méthode de simuler la variabilité spatiale du gisement dans une cellule par une séquence d’étapes de discrétisation durant lesquelles une cellule est subdivisée en quatre ou huit cellules. De nouveaux développements sont présentés afin de valider les modèles de simulation des gisements et de traiter des mesures ponctuelles des propriétés géotechniques et de teneur du minerai. Le présent article illustre la pertinence de traduire la variabilité spatiale du gisement en indicateurs de rendement financier ou opérationnel durant l’exploitation subaquatique de la ressource. "The deportment of gold in samples of the biooxidation feed and product from the Harbour Lights mine in Western Australia was determined using optical microscopy and microbeam techniques such as Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS), Time-of-Flight Laser Ionization Mass Spectrometry (TOF-LIMS), and Electron Probe Microanalysis (EPMA). The main objective was to determine the mechanisms by which acidophilic bacteria (Thiobacillus ferrooxidans) liberate refractory gold which is locked in a sulphide minerals host as visible gold inclusions (> 0.1 µm) and as submicroscopic or 'invisible' gold.Using the integrated mineralogical approach approximately 99% and 100% of the assayed gold in the biooxidation feed and biooxidation product was accounted for. The results were compared to and verified by chemical assays.The gold deportment study indicates that during biooxidation, locked visible and 'invisible' gold is rendered cyanidable by the direct action of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans as well as indirect chemical leaching. Visible gold which is enclosed in sulphide minerals is liberated or partially exposed and is therefore rendered cyanidable as the host mineral is oxidized and dissolved. 'Invisible' gold either coalesces on the surface of the host sulphide mineral as the particle is dissolved or is released into the liquid phase and immediately adsorbs onto the surface of other ore particles with a net negative charge.The shakeflask suspension indicates that direct bacterial oxidation pits and channels correspond to zones of 'invisible' gold and arsenic (in pyrite) enrichment in the host sulphide mineral."

"Since the late 1970s, extensive work has been carried out at Placer Dome Inc. 's Dome Mine to develop new mining methods and equipment to improve the productivity of narrow vein mining (Mining Magazine, Oct. 1986, pp. 308-317; Mar. 1988, pp. 176-/79). This work has been focused on mining veintype deposits varying from 0.9 m to 1.5 m in width using open stoping and cut-and-fill mining methods.In 1989, the Dome Mine entered into a contract with Ram Raising Ltd., a joint venture company of Angus Martin and I.S. Redpath Ltd., to develop and mine a narrow vein test stope using an Alimak Raise Climber. Early results have been favourable, indicating that Alimak methods can be used successfully to mine narrow vein are.HistoryThe Dome Mine, which has been in continuous operation since 1910, is located in South Porcupine, part of the city of Timmins, Ontario. The mine is wholly-owned and operated by Placer Dome Inc. and is part of Placer Dome Inc.'s international stable of of 19 mines."

"Laboratory and trial installations have been completed to determine the potential of composite cable bolt reinforcement in Canadian underground mines. Several prototypes of glass fibre cable bolts have been developed and tested, two of which are currently available to the mining industry. Their evalualtion consisted of lab testing in Canada and the United States, along with trial installations in several underground mines throughout Canada. The objective was to develop a cost competitive composite cable bolt equivalent in strength to that of a 16 mm (Ys in.) diameter steel cable bolt. In addition to achieving equal or superior load carrying characteristics in tension, the glass fibre cables generally experienced an increase in the rate of installation due to their lighter weight. Unlike conventional steel cables, composite cables may be installed within mines which utilize continuous excavation and which require cuttable support. A market analysis of cable bolt usage in Canada has been completed. Glass fibre cable bolts are an effective means of rock reinforcement in mining applications. They prove to be a viable alternative to conventional steel cable bolting. IntroductionCurrent cable bolting practice consists of cement grouting one or more steel cables within a drill hole in order to support the surrounding rock mass. Cable bolts are a form of internal support and are generally used as pre-support in open stope and cut-and fill mining methods. They can be either tensioned (active support) or untensioned (passive support) and may be of any length, though for underground mining applications, are generally less than 20 m (65.6 ft) and are untensioned. A major advantage of cable bolts is that they are flexible and can be coiled to approximately 1 m (3.3 ft) diameter coils. This allows relatively long lengths (>20 m, [65.6 ft]) to be installed in areas with limited head room (1.8 m)."

"Oxygen is essential in gold cyanidation. It is supplied to the leaching media by sparging oxygen or compressed air into the cyanidation tank. The rate of oxygen transfer is critical to achieve the desired oxygen concentration in solution.The performance of a novel device for gas sparging recently developed at McGill University is compared to the mass transfer characteristics of the two spargers most used in the gold industry: the four lance configuration and the inverted cone. The distribution of gas and the kinetics of oxygen desorption of the three types of spargers was studied in a 140 litre tank. The oxygen dissolution of the new device is three to five times faster than the other spargers. This could increase the leaching rate and/or decrease the cyanide and oxygen consumption.IntroductionIn hydrometallurgical processing, it is often necessary to bubble gas through a pulp to carry out the wanted reactions. The gas can act to agitate the pulp and it can also supply reactant. The rates of the reactions which require a reactant supplied by the gas are often dependent on the rates of mass transfer from the gas to the solution.A common example of this is gold cyanidation which requires oxygen for gold dissolution. Since the gold containing slurry is rich in other oxygen consuming substances (sulphide like pyrrhotite), it is important to provide enough oxygen to allow complete gold dissolution within the residence time of the cyanidation reactors. It has been demonstrated that the rate of gold dissolution is directly proportional to the dissolved oxygen concentration of the pulp which in turn is proportional to the oxygen partial pressure in the bubble 1 2 3. Improving the rate of mass transfer of oxygen increases the dissolved oxygen concentration of the slurry and therefore improves the rate of the reaction.The rate of mass transfer from a bubble to its surrounding solution increases with decreasing bubble size and increasing gas bubble residence time which in turn increases with decreasing bubble size. The generation and dispersion of small bubbles is thus critical to achieving high rates of mass transfer. Different configurations and devices used to inject gas have different effects on the bubble size and the residence time, influencing the overall rate of mass transfer. Therefore better mass transfer can be achieved by adopting a more efficient method.The methods tested in this report are the four lance configuration (wall spargers), the inverted cone and a new device, designated HCD. The wall spargers and the inverted cone are used widely in the industry today."

"This paper describes the results of full-scale testing of several multi-layered wood crib configurations that were tested in the Bureau of Mines mine roof simulator in cooperation with the Cape Breton Coal Research Laboratory and Cape Breton Development Corporation of Sydney, Nova Scotia. Nine different crib configurations currently being used as wood packwall supports for advancing longwall applications in Canada were evaluated. Configuration parameters understudy included the aspect ratio (height-to-width relationship) and percentage of solid material used in the crib construction. Test results and generalized wood crib behaviour are discussed in detail. Recommendations are made concerning crib constructions to maximize strength and stability. A cost benefit analysis of multi-layered wood crib configurations is made. A comparison of laboratory results and underground observations of several wood packwall supports in the Sydney coalfield suggest in situ load capacity is less than that measured in laboratory testing. Reasons for the apparent decrease of in situ load bearing capability are described.IntroductionA cooperative effort was undertaken by the U.S. Bureau of Mines with the Cape Breton Development Corporation (CBDC) and the Cape Breton Coal Research Laboratory (CBCRL) to evaluate the behaviour of gateside packing materials used in advancing longwall mining applications in the Sydney coalfield. As part of this effort, full-scale tests were conducted on wood packwall supports in the Bureau's 3-million pound (13.3 MN) active load frame.Nine different pack configurations were evaluated as part of this study. The wood packwall supports were multi-layered crib constructions from 6 in. (0.15 m) by 6 in. (0.15 m) cross section timbers using timber s 30 in. (0.75 m) and 60 in. (1.5 m) in length . The percentage of solid material in the crib constructions varied as illustrated in Figures 1 and 2. A summary of crib constructions is provided in Table 1."

"Sorting technologies have the potential to reduce energy use in comminution by rejecting uneconomic ore before feed material enters the mill. However, a major challenge for sorting porphyry copper ores is providing a basis of discrimination between valuable and non-valuable fragments, due to their complex mineralogies and textural features. Microwave heating in combination with infra-red detection (MW-IR) has been shown to provide upgraded feedstock for certain ores at bench scale. Selective heating of copper sulphide minerals compared to the gangue leads to an increased thermal response for valuable fragments, providing the basis for sorting.Rapid scale up of MW-IR from bench scale to a 100 t/h continuous pilot plant facility has been facilitated by the design of microwave choking structures to allow continuous operation at industrially meaningful throughputs, whilst meeting health and safety and electromagnetic compliance standards, and the integration of materials handling with electromagnetic systems.Laboratory batch testing on a pilot scale microwave system has been undertaken to investigate the thermal response of copper ores under industrial conditions, at microwave energy inputs up to 1 kWh/t. These results provided the operating window and recommended test conditions for the continuous pilot plant. Sortability curves predicted in the laboratory are in good agreement with separations achieved during continuous pilot plant operations. The potential microwave sortability of a number of ores has been studied, allowing informed decisions to be made about potential ore candidates based on mineralogy. Future development of the technology will be underpinned by the creation and validation of scale up concepts for 1000 t/h operations. Understanding the value proposition for individual sites/applications will be central to unlocking the potential economic and environmental benefits of microwave sorting."

The Manganese division of the ERAMET group extracts manganese ore in Gabon and produces manganese alloys for the steel industry. ERAMET has an economic interest to maximize the ore throughput without reducing the lifetime of its manganese mines. This can be achieved by means of research and development leading to innovative ore beneficiation processes. For this purpose, the ERAMET research center has designed and constructed a new pilot plant for ore beneficiation by physical separation processes. This pilot facility was erected within an infrastructural and synergetic framework, including competencies in hydrometallurgy, pyrometallurgy, numerical modelling, analyses and mineral characterization that provide ideal research conditions. After laboratory scale tests, a pilot operation of beneficiation of low grade Mn ore (around 35% Mn) was carried out by jigging of the 1-10 mm fraction. This gravity separation process exploits density differences between the various Mn-bearing minerals such as pyrolusite and lithiophorite as well as gangue minerals such as silicates and iron-hydroxides. Enrichment leads to the production of a marketable product associated with a high mass recovery (53% for the jigging step). However, 20% of pyrolusite and 30% of lithiophorite are lost in the waste. Mineral characterization has shown microtextural complexities, but grinding the ore to approach the liberation mesh was not an option due to commercially defined constraints given by the ferro-alloy industry. Recovery of the Mn-bearing minerals or adjustments of the feed grain size (6.3-10 mm) are two potential areas of process improvements identified by means of Qemscan® mineral characterization. This paper details the process tested on a pilot scale (0.5 t/h), which has led to a significant increase in the beneficiation of a low grade Mn ore.

"The problem of crud in solvent extraction is well known and can be a major handicap and operational issue. Colloidal silica can cause a number of problems including interfering with flocculation, initiating crud formation in solvent extraction (SX), decreasing SX extraction kinetics and increasing SX phase disengagement times. Flocculation can be utilized to remove some of the troublesome particulates but colloidal silica does not flocculate well and presents a different problem requiring innovative chemistry to solve. Coagulants can assist by facilitating the removal of this colloidal silica by promoting the agglomeration of the particles to a size which can be more readily settled or flocculated in solid/liquid separations. This is achieved when the coagulants bind to the surfaces, displacing water and destabilizing the colloids, whereupon they bind to each other which facilitate their amenability to conventional flocculation.INTRODUCTIONSilicate minerals are abundant in the upper layers of the Earth’s crust, and there are few mineral deposits without significant levels of gangue silicates. Silicate minerals include the pure silicas, such as quartz and other silicate containing minerals such as clays, chlorites, feldspars, as well a vast number of less common silicates.During the acid leaching of ores, two types of fine silica particles are released in solution from the dissolution of the host mineral. The first consists of partly depleted silicates, and the second is colloidal silica, which forms in solution. It is this second type which has the potential to cause crud formation as well as poor solution clarities, slow filter rates and excessive flocculant usage (Figure1)."

Successful demonstration of The Mintek Thermal Magnesium Process (MTMP) was achieved in November 2004 at the pilot-scale, About 30 tons of magnesium producing recipe was smelted in the DC arc furnace over a continuous operation of 8-days, Twenty-two furnace batching-tapping operations were carried out at a feed rate of 525kg/h and a smelting temperature of 1600-1700°C, The MgO content in the produced slag was as low as 6,7%, and averaged 9,2% MgO, resulting in an overall magnesium extraction of 77%, which reached 87% during good operating periods, Magnesium vapour was extracted at a rate of 70-85kg/h and was delivered to the condenser that was operated at 680-720°C, The magnesium was captured in the condenser crucible in a liquid state, allowing its prompt tapping, More than 3500kg of crude metal were produced over 15 on-line metal tapping operations, On average, a condensation efficiency of 85% was achieved during the entire testwork, which peaked at 87% during steady operations, The quality of the crude metal was similar to, if not better than, that of the Magnetherm's crude magnesium, A pre-feasibility study has indicated that the MTMP has the potential for lower capital and operating costs as compared to the electrolytic process, and therefore Mintek and its consortium partners are exploring opportunities for a commercial production facility.

"A model based control strategy was implemented at Loulo Gold Mine in Mali, to stabilise the thickener underflow stream density. This stream acts as the feed to the leaching circuit. pH control of the leaching circuit was integrated with the model-based controller due to slow process dynamics that are not suited to PID control. The controller performance was quantified over a period of 6 months, and was compared to the performance before implementation. The model based controller reduced process variability for both thickener underflow density and pH considerably, and resulted in a reduction in flocculant and lime consumption of 9.32 and 6.55%, respectively. INTRODUCTION Reagent consumption in gold processing plants significantly contributes to the total operational costs. In a typical Carbon-in-pulp (CIP) circuit, the reagent consumption associated with leaching, adsorption, elution and regeneration contribute to approximately 15% of the total operational costs (Stange, 1999). At Loulo Gold Mine, the reagent consumption associated with leaching, adsorption, elution and regeneration contributes to 6% of the total operational costs. As such, a reduction in reagent consumption will present a significant opportunity for savings on operating expenditure. Variability in feed ore characteristics results in continuous changes in steady state operating regions, which presents process control challenges as a result of the long residence times in some of the process units associated with gold processing plants. Overdosing often occurs in the presence of process variability to ensure safe operation and to maintain recovery targets. As a means of reducing reagent consumption and accounting for significant changes in the feed to gold plants, some of the plants have resorted to improving their process control strategies around their circuits. This paper focuses on the implementation of a model predictive based controller at Loulo Gold Mine on their thickener and Carbon-in-leach (CIL) tank to: •,stabilise the thickener underflow density, and •,the CIL tank pH."

A coupled thermal-fluid flow-multicomponent model has been developed to aid in understanding the melting/dissolution behavior of solid Al-rich Material (TiAl) in a liquid titanium pool produced by an electron beam. The model is capable of accounting for the significant phenomena present affecting heat, mass and momentum transport including thermal and compositional buoyancy and Marangoni forces, Darcy attenuation, evaporation, melting and solidification, and the associated release or absorption of latent heat. The modeling results have indicated the compositional fluid flow driving forces (compositional buoyancy and Marangoni forces) contribute significantly to the melting/dissolution process. The model is waiting for validation against empirical data.

"Abstract- The Legris Lake Complex is a northeast-trending, 7.3 km long by 3.5 km wide, maficultramafic intrusive complex located in the western Wabigoon Subprovince of the Archean Superior Province. It is one of a series of mafic-ultramafic igneous complexes, the most notable of which is the Lac des Iles Complex, host to Canada’s only producing Pd mine with reserves of 93.5 Mt grading 1.53 g/t Pd as of December 2001 (North American Palladium Ltd., Annual Report 2001). Cu-Ni- PGE mineralization was first discovered in the Legris Lake Complex by a local prospector late in 1999. Shortly thereafter, the property was jointly optioned by Avalon Ventures Ltd. and Starcore Resources Ltd., who continue to discover significant Cu-Ni-PGE mineralization.One of the most notable features of the Legris Lake Complex is the occurrence of extensive brecciation caused by multiple injections of volatile-rich magma. The Cu-Ni-PGE mineralization is hosted by leucogabbro within a 2 km long by 600 m wide, highly brecciated area in the northwestern area of the Complex. The mineralized rocks contain disseminated to blebby sulfides (1 to 5 vol.%), comprising chalcopyrite + pyrite ± pyrrhotite + millerite ± pentlandite, typically surrounded by epidote. The majority of the Cu-Ni-PGE mineralization displays low ratios of Pt/Pd (~0.20) and high ratios of Cu/Ni (~2.9), which are similar to those of the Lac des Iles and the River Valley mafic-ultramafic complexes. The lithologies in Legris Lake Complex bear similarities to the heterolithic gabbro of the Twilight and Roby Zone deposits at the nearby Lac des Iles mine. However, the mineralization at Legris Lake, which is restricted to leucogabbro overlying unmineralized clinopyroxenite, is similar to that of stratiform deposits such as the Stillwater and Munni Munni complexes. The mineralization at Legris Lake is best explained by the late-stage, immiscible separation of a sulfide melt from volatile-rich parental magmas and the subsequent minor redistribution of metals by deuteric fluids."

"This paper discusses the exploitation of shallow underground deposits in a very altered geological environment. The methods, their adaptation to local conditions, their evolution, dilution control and recovery of mineral reserves will all be dealt with.The recovery of the B zone crown pillar under 40 m of till that was originally saturated with water, is of particular interest.Future underground development and production start-up of the A-2 zone, organization of mining operations, mechanical services, group incentives and safety practices will also be given.IntroductionThe underground deposit of B zone is not very deep. A 300 m shaft provides access to the mine. In addition , exploitation sublevels are developed every 20 m and are linked by a service ramp. The overburden located on top of the deposit is 40 m thick and is composed of a very dense till.A detailed work plan was initiated to permit mining under the overburden. To do so, it was imperative that efficient methods be developed. At a time when an accident at the Belmoral Mine shook the mining world , it was a task to convince provincial authorities that it was safe.While B zone was being mined , development began in the A-2 zone deposit which has recently been put into production (Figs. 1 and 2).The intention of this paper is to provide an outline of the mining method s and their particular aspects. To do so, some of the mine services are described and a brief outline of the under ground department is provided."

Shales and mudstones comprise about 75% of all the sedimentary rocks. In, particular, organic rich shales are considered as a petroleum source rock and more recently with the advent of hydraulic fracturing technology to be a reservoir in their own right. In this sense, the aforesaid motivates our work with laboratory measurements of elastic properties of these geologic materials, which are known to be anisotropic. As such, assuming Vertical Transverse Isotropy (VTI) symmetry, the dynamic and static moduli of a series of cores from various geological formations in Alberta, Canada are simultaneously investigated as a function of confining pressure using the ultrasonic pulse transmission method and strain gages. Dynamic moduli were obtained from ultrasonic P- and S-wave velocities measured on a prism cut with faces perpendicular, parallel and oblique to the assumed vertical axis of symmetry. Static moduli were calculated from strain-stress curves obtained along the directions perpendicular and parallel to the assumed axis of symmetry as well. Velocity measurements show that samples are highly anisotropic, but that the pressure-dependent behaviour of the wave speeds differs. VP(90°) and VSH(90°) both with layer parallel propagation and polarizations change little with pressure while VP(0°) and VS(0°) (both with layer perpendicular propagation) display significant nonlinear responses particularly at pressures < 25 MPa. These characters transfer to the derived full set of elastic constants. In order to effect a proper comparison of the dynamic and static moduli, we convert the dynamic elastic constanst to linear compressibilities pependicular (Kdyn1) and parallel (Kdyn3) which are directly comparable to the static tangent compressibiities obtained by differentiation of the observed strains. Both sets highlight the anisotorpic nature of the material but most interestingly Kdyn1 _ Ksta1 but Kdyn3 > Ksta3 by nearly 40% for one of the samples. The other samples measured respond similarly suggesting that conceptually the structure of such materials could be considered to be constructed of alternating stiff or compliant layers. This finding has implications in the response of the formation to stress particularly during hydraulic fracturing and the interpreation of acoustic logs in providing appropriate measures of elastic properties for engineering purposes.

"Gibraltar Mines Ltd. has been operating its open pit copper mine for fifteen years. In that time over 140 million tons of waste and low grade material has been placed on the mine waste dumps. Laboratory and in-situ testing indicated that enough leachable copper was recoverable from the dumps to justify a leaching operation which would include the construction of a solvent extraction-electrowinning plant. The plant, which was commissioned in October, 1984 was designed to process 3,000 usgpm of dilute copper solution to produce 5,000 tons per year of high quality cathode copper.This paper deals with the start up and initial year of operation of Gibraltar's SX-EW plant. The three areas: leaching solvent extraction and electrowinning are presented with emphasis on the innovations which were made to help overcome the problems unique to die Gibraltar operation.THE LEACHING CIRCUITThe mines waste dumps are leached to produce a pregnant copper solution as feed to the SX-EW plant. To achieve this the dumps are sprinkled with a mildly acidic solution which percolates through the dump. In travelling through the dumps the solution contacts the surfaces of the liberated copper minerals and disolves the soluble copper into the form of copper sulphate. The leaching reaction is achieved by a combination of bacterial action to oxidize the suphides and solublization of the copper into the acid solution.For the bacterial action to occur the dumps must be at or near the ideal pH of 1.9 - 2.1 and the necessary elements of the reaction must be present. Because a bacterial reaction is involved there is a lag time between the time when the conditions for bacterial growth are achieved and when the bacteria are in their active growth phase. Laboratory tests with Gibraltar ore indicated that bacterial action takes two to three months to reach its maximum rate. See figure 1.The expected lag time for the planned rate of bacterial leaching prompted Gibraltar to start irrigating the dumps in late June 1986 for a plant start up in early fall. The lag time proved to be longer than expected and the dumps took until November to start producing copper at the expected rate. See figure 2."
