MINUTES OF THE PREVIOUS GENERAL MEETING As the minutes of the General Meeting held on the 16th June, 1971, had not been published in the Journal, the Chairman moved that the adoption and discussion thereof be deferred to the next General Meeting. This motion was adopted unanimously. The minutes of the General Meeting held on the 10th February, 1971, were taken as read. The adoption, which was proposed by Mr D. A. Smith and seconded by Mr J. M. Meyer, was carried unanimously. At Mr Honnet's request, Mr V. C. Robinson took the chair during the presentation of the Chairman's Annual Report. A computer-based, real-time mine management system has been installed in a number of underground operations. The system’s innovative software application is coupled with wireless data acquisition and database management to provide complete mine monitoring and control execution in closed-loop control fashion. The system is well suited to automatically assign equipment, acquire status, and reassign resources based on status; and to automate information handling. The system has provided mines with improved utilization of the equipment fleet and mining crews, and reduced workplace cycle time. This paper describes the deployment of systems at a number of underground mining operations and discusses future development of the system. Solvent loading: It is agreed that it is advantageous, as far as reagent cost is concerned, to operate at maximum solvent loading. However, owing to the fact that no reliable automatic solvent flow controller is yet available, control tends to be erratic with the result that there is risk of losing uranium. As can be seen from Mr Tunley's plot, the graph representing total ammonia cost is fairly flat between loadings of 3.5 and 4.0 gpl, while the graph representing uranium loss in the raffinate is steep. It is, therefore, safer to operate slightly below optimum loading in the absence of absolute control. Should the purity of the final product gain importance, operation at optimum loading or even slightly above, may be advantageous. Solvent losses and clarification of pregnant solution: The cost of replacing solvent, as indicated by Mr Carman, represents a high percentage of the overall Purlex costs. It is, therefore, agreed that, amongst other factors, efficient clarification of the pregnant solution and mixer-settler design have an important bearing on the cost. However, as at Blyvooruitzicht, the Buffelsfontein plant can tolerate a suspended solids content of 50 ppm without serious deterioration in efficiency. An increase in the suspended solids content from 15 to 50 ppm normally accounts for an increase of approximately 1 ppm in amine loss. Clarification of acidic pregnant solutions is much more difficult than that of alkaline solutions. Sand clarifiers are being used at Buffelsfontein with moderate success. Clarified solutions containing less than 20 ppm of solids in suspension can be produced, depending on the quantity and type of flocculant used in the filtration process, the thickness and the grading analysis of the sand beds and the quality of supervision. An on-stream duty of approximately 0.15 gallon per sq ft of surface area is obtained. Hydraulic handling of clarifier sand, while cleaning, may effect the efficiency of a clarifier, as size segregation of sand particles may lead to inefficient "pockets" in a sand bed. Control of the solution level in the sand clarifier also affects the quality of the effluent. Exposure of the sand bed invariably causes a cloudy effluent. Recycling of the final and initial solution discharged before and after skimming the clarifier sand improves the clarification efficiency significantly. Post-precipitation of silica and possibly sulphate salts, after clarification, may give a false impression of inefficient clarification. This phenomenon is more pronounced when treating hot supersaturated solutions. Ageing and cooling of the solution before clarification assist in stabilising the solution and reduce precipitation after clarification. The maintenance cost of sand clarifiers at Buffelsfontein is in the order of 0.35 cent per metric ton of solution treated. A redundant ion-exchange column has been tested successfully, either as a primary or a secondary clarifier, depending on the quality of the filtrate treated. The conventional pebble and sand beds in the column have been retained. Operation was enhanced by the addition of a two-foot deep resin bed as a filtering medium. The suspended solids content was reduced to less than 5 ppm. Mixer-settlers: Mixer-settler design is a controversial subject but, in view of the high costs of solvent compared to relatively low pumping costs, it is believed that mixing and pumping functions should be separated. Separate facilities for pumping and mixing not only give greater operational flexibility but also permit eventual changes in the flow circuit as technology develops. Scrub technique: Unlike the pilot plant, where the crud was carried away in the aqueous phase, crud is carried over with the organic phase in the full-scale plant. This carry-over of crud into the strip bank aggravates crud formation in the first strip stage. This phenomenon may result from a slight difference in settler design and/or a variation in the relative phase depths in the two plants. Bypassing of the scrub aqueous solution from the fourth to the second stage was introduced in order to avoid dilution and partial neutralisation of the acid added to the third stage, as it is known that a low pH value enhances the transfer of iron into the aqueous phase. The low aqueous flowrate in the third scrubbing stage was overcome by introducing an aqueous phase recycle. Gleaning: Mr MacDonald's contribution on "gleaning" was most informative. This process for recovering solvent from raffinate seems to show at least as much promise as coalescers and other methods employed to date. Similar tests conducted at Buffelsfontein pilot plant gave 60 per cent amine recovery from raffinate containing 10 ppm amine. However, the circuit was not operated at equilibrium and recovery may be expected to drop as the amine concentration of the "Gleaner" circuit increases.

"SynopsisSilicon carbide nanopowders were produced using a microwave-induced plasma process operating at 15 kPa absolute and at atmospheric pressure. Methyltrichlorosilane (MTS) served as precursor, due to its advantageous stoichiometric silicon-to-carbon ratio of unity, allowing it to act as both carbon and silicon source. Argon served as carrier gas, and an additional hydrogen feed helped ensure a fully reducing reaction environment. The parameters under investigation were the H2:MTS molar ratio and the total enthalpy. The particle size distribution ranged from 20 nm upwards, as determined by SEM and TEM micrographs. It was found that an increase in enthalpy and a higher H2:MTS ratio resulted in smaller SiC particle sizes. The adhesion of particles was a common occurrence during the process, resulting in larger agglomerate sizes. SiC layers were deposited at 15 kPa with thicknesses ranging from 5.8 to 15 µm.IntroductionIt is well known that methyltrichlorosilane (CH3SiCl3 or MTS) decomposes to form silicon carbide (SiC) and hydrogen chloride (HCl) as shown in Equation [1]. The reaction kinetics and mechanisms for this reaction are thoroughly reported in the literature (Sone et al., 2000; Papasouliotis and Sotirchos, 1999; Kaneko et al., 2002; Wang et al., 2011)."

In general all the arguments, raised by Messrs Cooke, Martus and Johnston in favour of extending the scope of the new assistance scheme can be accepted as sound.

The long-term open-pit mine production scheduling problem (OPMPSP) is typically solved in two broad stages. The first stage entails optimisation of the ultimate pit limit, which delimits the economical final pit and maximises the undiscounted value of the deposit. The second stage entails optimisation of the long-term open-pit mine production scheduling, which maximises the discounted value of the deposit. The long-term OPMPSP is a type of an NP-hard problem, such as the travelling salesman problem (TSP), because it is intrinsically complex to solve since it incorporates both hard and soft constraints. Therefore, metaheuristic approaches have been used to find global optimum solutions to the long-term OPMPSP. This paper presents a metaheuristic approach utilising a dual interchange algorithm (DIA) to solve the long-term OPMPSP. The DIA is a parent algorithm which supervises two subservient algorithms, namely, simulated annealing (SA) and Tabu search (TS). The DIA selects the better solution generated in each run from the two algorithms, and simultaneously penalises the algorithm that produced an inferior solution, while rewarding the one that produced a better solution. The DIA was tested on the three-dimensional Arizona Copper Deposit (KD) dataset, which is publicly available for research purposes from the online MineLib repository. It was set to generate net present values (NPVs) in five-minute intervals and the solution improved until it plateaued at about 30 minutes of runtime. The NPVs compared favourably to those obtained on the same KD dataset but obtained over 24-hour runtimes, when solved using simulated annealing and Tabu search algorithms, and the NPV generated from the work of Muñoz (2012) using the modified TopoSort as found on the MineLib repository at the time of this study. Therefore, this paper demonstrates that DIAs can be developed and used to solve the three-dimensional long-term OPMPSP.

"In this paper a discussion is presented of a program designed to produce a 40-day production forecast for an underground stoping system.The program is intended to be a tool for the operations department in an underground mine, and is designed to utilize data readily available from production reports. Brevity of data input, ability to revise slope conditions easily and the accuracy of starting stope status are stressed. Applicability of the program to a wide variety of sloping methods makes the program potentially useful in a large number of mines.The general functions of the program subroutines, and input and output lists are discussed. An example is also given of a stope in operation for a three-day period, which shows how the program can handle production irregularities as they arise."

The effects were studied of the presence of comminuted flint on the rheological characteristics of chalk slurry pumped through a 92-km long pipeline from Kensworth Quarry to Rugby Cement Works in the UK, and their impact on the pipe flow conditions. Flow curves were measured for 63different chalk slurry samples; these were described by the Bingham plastic model. In addition to observing trends in the yield stress parameter and plastic viscosity in the model with variations in both flint concentration and dispersant additive, use was also made of slurry viscosity values at a reference shear rate of 60 s-1for the pipe flow. It was found that chalk slurry viscosity decreases with increasing flint content up to 10% by weight for a given additive concentration, and increases with increasing additive concentration from 0.7 to 1.0%, for a given flint content. The pipeline flow regimes were identified using the critical value of the Bingham Reynolds number for laminar flow breakdown. For Bench 11 (quarry bottom) chalk slurries, it was observed that all sections of the pipeline operate in the turbulent flow regime for the nine different formulations and for the three pipe diameters used along the pipeline. However, this was not always the case for Bench 1(quarry top) slurries. It was therefore recommended that chalk slurries prepared from Bench 1 should not be used because of the strong likelihood that laminar flow conditions will occur owing to the presence of higher clay concentrations within this bench. This, in turn, will lead to an unsafe operation of the pipeline because of the potential for coarse particle settling. Likewise, blending of chalk from Bench 1 with the lower benches such as Bench 11 could be problematic and this requires further experimentation.

Over the past couple of years, Anglo Platinum has made extensive use of technology within the core disciplines (geology, evaluation, survey, and planning) that collectively form part of mineral resource management (MRM). While these technologies were primarily developed to enable geology, evaluation, survey, and planning to carry out their daily tasks, with the main objective of supporting the mine?s production effort, they have also enhanced the disciplines? ability to produce the required outputs within the annual business planning cycle. Anglo Platinum has developed a very comprehensive business planning process, and these technologies play a vital role in enabling both the quality and quantity of inputs into the process, and also the value-add of the final product. This prompted a question regarding the practical application of the CADSMine software. If we changed our thinking in how we applied the software, would it be possible to further improve on the time taken to deliver a business plan? In changing the current planning approach, would we be able to further simplify the process? Is there a way to reduce the data generated in order to enhance the time taken to do reporting, as the CADSMine software is totally network dependent? Less data should equal faster reporting. This paper focuses on the practical application of the CADSMine software, and demonstrates the value-add to the business planning process that can be gained if the mine design methodology is changed from individual panels to bigger blocks representing a raise line.

All mining and milling complexes can, within limits, operate at a variety of production rates. Factors of economic importance that are affected by production rates are costs per unit production, recovery and product grade. Once the relationship between the production rate and cost is established, dynamic programming techniques can be used to define the optimum production schedule (that is, the production schedule that maximizes the present worth of the operation) for the life of the deposit. In general, assuming that the capacity and efficiency of the physical plant remain unchanged throughout the life of the deposit, the optimum production rate is not constant for the life of the deposit, but declines gradually as the deposit is being exhausted.

"The mining industry in the Democratic Republic of Congo has seen a significant expansion in copper and cobalt production in recent years. The greater proportion of this expansion has arisen through processing of oxide ores. The design of metallurgical processes for these oxide ores is based on the conventional equipment and layout for processing of sulphide ores, and comprises milling followed by leaching, solvent extraction, and electrowinning. The physical characteristics of the oxide ores, however, provide the process design engineer with an opportunity to examine critically the principles on which equipment selection is based and to design processes better suited to these ores. In 2015, ERG Africa began a project to expand the leaching capacity of the Luita hydrometallurgical facility. A number of innovative changes to the conventional process design were included in the modified flow sheet, which were validated when the project reached design throughput in November 2017. Of these changes, the most novel presented an alternative approach to mitigate the impact of colloidal silica on the operation of the solvent extraction plant. Introduction ERG Africa operates the Luita hydrometallurgical facility located at Kakanda in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), treating malachite and heterogenite minerals to recover copper as electrowon cathode and cobalt as a hydroxide precipitate. The process was originally conceived as a heap leach operation followed by direct electrowinning of copper, with solvent extraction (SX) and electrowinning (EW) of cobalt. In preparing the sized ore for the heap leach operations, the undersized ore fraction at a P80 of 625 µm was discharged to a fines storage facility for later processing. This fraction carried with it approximately 30% of the copper contained in the run-of-mine (ROM) ore feed, and an equivalent proportion of cobalt.In a subsequent development, the cobalt SX section was converted to a copper SX facility, the leached cobalt being recovered from a bleed stream from the copper heap leach circuit. The operating cost for the process as then installed placed this facility well in the fourth quartile of the industry cost curve. The initial Luita operation was established in 2010 at a time when metal prices were above long-term averages (copper above US$3.00 per pound; cobalt above US$20.00 per pound), and the drop in prices in 2015/2016 presented a major challenge. The London Metal Exchange (LME) copper price dropped below US$2.00 per pound, with cobalt dropping below US$10.00 per pound in Q1 2016. This set in motion a range of improvement initiatives for the Luita operation. Central to this was the installation of a tank leach circuit to process the discarded fines and a modified SX circuit to manage colloidal silica. The revised Luita circuit reached design capacity in November 2017 and has proven to be well suited to processing of the oxide ore feed. This process design challenges the boundaries of conventional thinking in the areas of leaching, solid/liquid separation, solution management, impurity management, and metal recovery, and is the subject of this paper."

Over a period of three years, since samples first became available, laboratory and pilot plant experiments have been conducted to develop a method of treatment to recover copper and zinc in saleable grades of concentrates from the Prieska complex sulphide orebody. These experiments have been based on adaptations of principles investigated by research workers and applied to similar ore types throughout the world. The differential flotation process finally worked out involves a comparatively coarse grind, flotation of the copper at near-neutral pH with the use of a zinc-cyande sphalerite depressant, followed by flotation of the reactivated sphalerite. This procedure has had such success that the construction of a full-scale plant is proceeding with confidence that the small-scale operations will be duplicated or improved upon. It is to be expected that the large plant will follow the pattern of almost every flotation plant that has been built in that modifications to the circuitry and reagent systems will be made as experience is gained.

Discus¬sion during this session was thus largely concerned, directly or indirectly, with communication between computing and mining personnel, and as such was relevant to the symposium as a whole.Mr A. Weiss set the tone of this discussion by referring to `user-orientated systems'. He congratulated Mr Burne in this regard, pointing out that his long-term production scheduling program, as a computer system, was similar in approach to the manual system it replaced, and was therefore easily understood by planning engineers. He asked whether the schedule engineer had his 'hands on' the system, to which Mr Burne replied that the engineer did in fact spend several days running alternative schemes through the computer. Mr Weiss commented on the advantage of having terminals on site for this sort of engineer-computer interaction. He also commented on the flexibility of Mr Burne's approach to scheduling and how preferable this was to a one-step optimization package. This was brought home by a question from Mr H. D. Small: Mr Burne's program sometimes found it necessary to temporarily halt an advancing face, and he asked whether the logic of the program could be altered to avoid this (e.g. by suitably slowing down the rate of face advance). Mr Burne replied that it was in fact easier for the planning engineer to sort this problem out manually. The way in which the computer results were presented made it particularly simple for the production engineer to see how to avoid or remedy a stopped face.On the technical side, both Mr Weiss and Mr H. M. Wells questioned Mr Burne on the handling of grade control by his program. From answers by Mr Burne and his colleague Mr K. H. Thomson it emerged that a spot-check on grade every now and then was all that was necessary at Mufulira, and that the idea of actual grade control was more a question of short-term than of long-term planning."

The spontaneous combustion of coal and the explosion of coal dust are two phenomena that were identified by the South African mining industry as requiring investigation. Research contracts were awarded to the G.P. Badenhorst Research Facility of the CSIR and the Department of Mining Engineering of the university of the Witwatersrand by the now defunct National Energy Council. Both projects entailed tests on numerous coal samples in specially designed apparatus. Since the completion of the project, attempts have been made to predict experimental results without incurring the cost of performing experiments. This paper describes predictive indices, based on routine laboratory tests, that were developed by the different research teams for their particular projects. A comparison of the results obtained by applying the spontaneous combustion liability index and the explosibility index to common coal samples indicates that, in general, propensity to spontaneous combustion and explosibility exhibit an inverse relationship. A brief overview is given of some major South African coal-mine disasters.

The importance of the chemical and physical properties of lime has been overlooked for years although the quality of lime plays an important role in the production of steel. With the introduction of the oxygen injection process these properties have been re-evaluated. The CaO, MgO, S, and P2O5 contents of lime are important, but so are the physical properties such as granulation, reactivity with respect to slag formation, and the degree of burning. Soft burnt lime enhances de-phosphorisation and de-sulphurisation, and facilitates the smelting process in general, mainly due to its large specific surface. Special lime, prepared as briquettes from quicklime and fluxes or as pellets from limestone and various fluxes with or without binding agents, clearly accelerates lime dissolution during the slag formation process, lowers the melting point, and enhances de-phosphorisation, de-sulphurisatlon, and de-carburisation even more than soft burnt lime. The introduction of special limes in the oxygen injection process for steel production has opened up new fields for commercial exploitation of slags as well as improved operational techniques.
