The Stillwater Mining Co. of Nye, MT, is operating a platinum-palladium mine that requires an extensive system of footwall laterals to facilitate mine production. The 10-year mine plan calls for more than 48,300 lineal m (160,000 lineal ft) of footwall lateral. A rapid tunneling and raising system is necessary to sustain mine production schedules and achieve production goals. This article describes the results of using a Robbins 4.1-m-diam (l3.5ft-diam) tunnel boring machine (TBM) to develop the footwall laterals and a Robbins RBM-6SP raise boring machine to develop raises at the mine. The Stillwater Mining Co is a partnership between Chevron Resources Co. and Manville Corp. Chevron Resources is the managing partner. When the mine began production in September 1986, the owners were primarily concerned with the actual production of platinum and palladium, the grade minable and the amount that could be mined. As mine development and mine production proved feasible, the owners considered higher production levels. The Stillwater Mine is developed by a system of adits (known as footwall laterals) that are driven parallel to the ore bearing zone. This led mine officials to consider using a mechanical boring machine in the primary mine development. Previously, tunnel boring machines have not been used successfully in mining applications. Therefore, the owners decided to purchase a used machine to reduce the potential risk.

The great increase in post-World War I1 use of molybdenum was made possible by discoveries of that metal in porphyry molybdenum and porphyry copper deposits. This section documents significant porphyry molybdenum discoveries of the post-war period. The most important discovery was Henderson in Colorado. It is not only one of the world's largest and richest, but it was found by a team of geologists who defined the hood model and tested it successfully at Henderson. Under the leadership of Stewart Wallace, these scientists established a set of criteria for exploration for Henderson-type de- posits that was copied by the industry. The discovery bf vertical cylinder type porphyry molybdenum deposits was less renowned. Boss Mountain in British Columbia and then Mt. Pleasant in New Brunswick were given relatively scant notice, compared with the Henderson discovery. However, these deposits have geometrics distinct from that found in the typical hood, which directly affects their exploration characteristics. Mt. Pleasant, included in this section, is a well defined, near vertical breccia pipe. Both the Henderson and Mt. Pleasant discoveries were made by relatively small groups operating independently of the bureaucracy that characterizes large corporations. The management role in each case was one of encouragement. In addition, Wallace had the beneficial experience of working for Climax, whose objective was the discovery of porphyry molybdenum deposits. Henderson was the natural outgrowth of the exploration effort by those who studied and understood the Climax deposit.

INTRODUCTION Stillwater Tunnel construction is scheduled to start in the spring of 1973. The tunnel will be the site of an extensive program in rapid excavation research. This paper presents a progress report regarding our plans and relates the tentative decisions which have been made on how to carry out the research effort. The details are subject to revision as more input is obtained from other Government agencies interested in tunnel construction and from experts in industry and educational institutions. The objective of the research program is to bring about faster, less costly tunnel construction. This objective will be pursued through the development, improvement, and evaluation of various construction systems and investigative techniques. The need for this kind of program was recognized by the National Research Council, in its authoritative report "Rapid Excavation - Significance, Needs, Opportunities." (1) The Council advocated a federally funded $200 million, 10-year program to help meet the $69 billion market it expects in underground excavation between 1970 and 1990. The significance of tunnel construction to Reclamation is made clear by statistics of its tunneling experience and outlook. Reclamation has constructed 174 water conveyance tunnels totaling over 190 miles, Six tunnels are presently under construction which have a combined length of about 27 miles. There are on the books nine authorized, but unfunded tunnel projects totaling another 70 miles in length. Many more miles of tunnels are included in programs in various stages of investigation.

Short Historical Review Tunnelling in Germany is as old as it is in other industrial countries. Until the middle of this century German contractors had no chance to work continuously in this business except if they were operating internationally. Since 1960, however, tunnelling has been a growing market domestically. The reasons for this growth have been both in the growing demand of traffic routes and also in an increasing environmental consciousness, which tries to transfer any cause of disturbance underground. Tunnelling engineers of course don't complain about this trend. As almost every German city is built upon water-bearing soft ground, shields have been used soon after they were first successfully utilized in Great Britain and the United States. Until the seventies lining systems for shield tunnels were predominantly either cast iron segments or concrete segments for primary support combined with different sealing systems and a secondary concrete lining cast-in-place. Steel ribs and timber lagging for primary support has not been utilized in Germany, since the owners don't accept timber to be left in the ground. In 1973, for the first time, permanent linings were constructed with watertight segment rings of precast concrete (Fig. 1). This lining was developed as an economical solution for use with slurry shields in noncohesive, water-bearing soils that required an immediately watertight lining. INTRODUCTION The heavy risk inherent in all underground construction projects contributes significantly to the high cost of transportation tunnels. First, the knowledge of this risk leads the engineer to design conservatively. Second, the cost overruns are still common with a high proportion of them originating from corrective measures needed when unforeseen problems develop during excavation. These unforeseen problems includes - encountering unexpected objects, materials and water conditions - experiencing an unforeseen behavior of the materials - damaging property beyond the expected range of influence of the tunnel construction. To minimize these expenses, more emphasis is being placed on well planned and interpreted site investigation programs in the final design and planning stages of the project. It is well known that the cost of a planned excavation is less than the cost of dealing with the same conditions when they are encountered unexpectedly. Therefore, the objective of site investigation is to provide a complete set of reliable data for designers and contractors that is continuous along the projected tunnel alignment. Two alternatives axe available to achieve this objective; - for shallow tunnels, it is often feasible to generate continuous data by drilling appropriately spaced, vertical bore holes and applying sensing techniques for interpolation (1, 8). - for deep tunnels, or certain urban tunnels under existing structures, closely spaced, vertical bore holes are not feasible except for narrow zones at the portals. In such cases direct horizontal penetration may be required that may be complemented by radial sensing to extend the range of information.

CANMET/MRL has been contributing to an industry/government program to assess the quality of air in mines, and improve the working environment for Canadian miners. The ultimate aim of this program is to recommend a sampling methodology and appropriate concentration limits for both the soot (diesel particulate matter - DPM) generated by diesel equipment, and respirable combustible dust (RCD) as measured underground. The program was conceived by the Canadian Adhoc Diesel Committee, which consists of representatives from seven major Canadian mining companies, three provincial inspectorates, one union representative, two manufacturers of diesel equipment, and CANMET, a Federal Canadian research agency. This paper describes the modification and laboratory confirmation of an existing methodology for the sampling and analysis of DPM/RCD, including: sampling problems, filter selection, filter efficiency, DPM size distribution, the approximate performance of fractionating devices, and it reports the results of current ambient measurements of exposure levels in Canadian underground mines. Because of the concern about the health impact of DPM/RCD on mine workers, North American agencies are in the process of establishing limits for these aerosols. So far, the Province of British Columbia is the only jurisdiction in North America to legislate the maximum exposure level of RCD in its underground mines, i.e. 1.5 mg/m3 interim level recommended by the Adhoc Diesel Committee. It has also recommended the use of the CANMET/ADHOC RCD sampling protocol.

INTRODUCTION The need for substantial advances in underground excavation technology has produced considerable research activity on a wide variety of concepts under a variety of Government funded programs. One goal of this "Rapid Excavation" effort has been the development of a means to apply the well-known virtues, both technical and economic, of the drill and blast method in a continuous process. The spiral blast concept, aimed at this specific goal, has been funded for initial studies (1) by the ARPA Rapid Excavation Program and, for the experimental work reported herein, by the Department of Transportation (2). The economy enjoyed by the drill and blast method stems from two factors: explosive energy is relatively cheap; and this energy is released so as to cause rock fragmentation largely through tensile failures. The relative ease and efficiency of tensile rock failures have long been recognized. The drill and blast process of course cannot be truly continuous since drilling and blasting (and other necessary functions) simply are separate, distinct operations. Although some surface explosive work has been done to avoid the need for drilled blast holes (3) it does appear that the high performance associated with explosive excavation requires placement of the explosive beneath the rock surface. This paper describes studies of blasting pattern which, in simplest terms, replaces the occasional heavy blast of conventional practice with frequent, much smaller blasts. The artificial stabilization of a pit slope at the Twin Buttes Mine near Tucson, Arizona has been completed as part of a practical rock mechanics program. The research program began in June 1971 as a result of the three million ton South Slope slide(1) which caused significant economic and operational problems. Hydrological studies, field and laboratory testing and investigation of various stabilization systems(2)occupied the first year of research. In July 1972 a design for an artificial stabilization test using post-tensioned cable bolts was completed and the selection of an outside contractor was made the following month. The project began in mid-September and was completed during the first week of January 1973. The test site is located adjacent to the South Slope slide in a zone of high potential failure. When the site was initially selected it was thought that it would remain stable at least until the test could be completed. However, heavy rains which fell in late October induced displacement in the half of the test site adjacent to the South Slope slide. Prior to this stabilization test it was thought both impractical as well as improbable that a moving slide could be stabilized with an artificial support system(3). Because the project was nearing the half-way point it was decided that an attempt should be made to complete the test as originally planned. This meant, in effect, that an attempt would be made to stabilize the moving section as well as the stable section.

In 1969, the OECD conducted a survey internationally to determine the status and needs for research and development in the field of tunneling. The findings also have some validity for underground excavation in general and for underground mining per se. Of the 17 countries responding to the survey, the U.S. leads in the level of support: $21.8 million and 720 man-years of effort over the last ten-year period. The total volume of R/D for the 17 countries was estimated to be $86 million and 5800 man-years. Performance of research was primarily by government agencies and public utilities (70%); the balance was conducted by private organizations and universities (15% each). In the categories of R/D subjects surveyed, three--Wk mechanics, soil mechanics, and geological exploration--outstripped all the rest in priority of effort to date. Ground support, equipment development, excavation, and environmental control received intermediate attention. The subject areas in which the least R/D effort has been expended are materials handling and systems evaluation. For the future, those R/D areas rated the most crucial to achieve technological progress in tunneling were excavation, ground support, and materials handling. The survey findings of tunneling activity indicated (1) a disturbingly low level of R/D activity in the private sector, (2) the necessity for a reordering of priorities in directing research efforts in the future, and (3) a lack of recognition to date of the importance of systems evaluation in R/D activities.

This paper (1) presents new data on the use of horizontal curves to optimize the alignment of belt conveyors. The operating concept of a horizontal curve is simple. As an element of the belt passes through the curve, it is motivated to drift toward the center of the curve by unbalanced tension forces in the belt. This lateral drift is resisted by the forces of friction and gravity, which in turn can be stated as a function of drift. Resisting forces, as a function of drift, are stated in terms of variables such as the amount of load on the belt, and parameters such as the trough angle, tilt angle, and super elevation angle, and number of rolls in the idler. The trick is to determine that the belt will drift to a position of equilibrium within predictable limits, without physically constraining the edge of the belt. In practice this prediction is not easy to make without the aid of a computer. The motivating force is easy to calculate, but its value is continually changing throughout the angle subtended by the curve arc. The resisting forces are constant throughout the curve for a given drift and load condition, but the calculations are very complex. Data in this paper will assist the conveyor designer in making preliminary calculations for horizontal curves. Presented is the equation for calculating the motivating force, and a family of curves that show the resisting force as a function of lateral drift for some commonly encountered conveyor design criteria.

Carbonaceous sedimentary rocks are abundant in the upper part of the caldera or maar that hosts the Puebio Viejo Au-Ag district, and much of the Moore sulfide zone is in these rocks. These rocks are thinly layered and contain scattered plant remains and variable amounts of volcaniclastic debris and pyrite. The carbonaceous matter in the sediments yields no X-ray diffraction pattern and is not graphite. It has C/N ratios of 4 to 10, and &13C values of about -25 per mil, which indicate that it is dominantly of marine organic origin and partly degraded. Atomic S/C ratios in the unmineralized part of the carbonaceous rocks have a median of about 1.2, much higher than most similar unmineralized rocks, reflecting not only the abundance of pyrite in the sediments, but also the fact that the organic material contains several percent sulfur. Extracts from the organic material indicate that it is thermally mature and that it reacted with the hydrothermal solutions. Atomic S/C ratios in the mineralized carbonaceous rocks are generally higher than those in unmineralized carbonaceous rocks, ranging to values of 5 and more. These differences indicate that significant amounts of carbon were consumed by the reduction of sulfate and metal chloride complexes in the mineralizing fluids as they passed through the carbonaceous sediments. Direct reaction between organic material and ferrous chloride-bearing, acid-sulfate hydrothermal solutions probably caused continuous deposition of pyrite during this period. Intermittent deposition of gold from chloride complexes by the same reaction was probably facilitated by boiling or C02 effervescence.

The price records of 7 representative mineral commodities for the 68-year period 1890 through 1957 have been compiled and analyzed for significant trends. When reduced to real prices in terms of dollars of constant purchasing power or to the purchasing power of industrial wages at average rates, a substantial overall fall in prices is revealed. This downtrend contradicts the widely held concept that, heavy drafts on a mineral resource must lead to scarcity, reflected in rising prices. Three metals (aluminum, copper, and pig iron), two fuels (bituminous coal and petroleum)', and two nonmetals (sulfur and cement) have been chosen because of their preeminence in their respective categories, their significance in an industrial economy, and the ready availability of their price records. It might be added that these seven commodities. were selected before any price figures were compiled, none was selected or rejected to substantiate any preconceived notions as to price trends, The overall importance of the seven is demonstrated by the fact that, taken together, they composed over three-fourths of the value of all minerals produced in the United States in 1957. The first step in the analysis was to reduce the price records to a basis for significant comparisons, Two such comparisons have been made: (1) The quantities of each of the commodities that could have been purchased for an average hour's wage in each year; and (2) the unit price of each commodity through hhe years in terms of deflated dollars. These data are set forth in the accompanying table and two charts.

The Eastern Magnesia Talc Company has always had the problem of adequate storage at its various mines and mills of not only crude ore and finished product but also material in process. An opportunity arose a couple of years ago with the decision to build a new mill at West Windsor, Vermont, (Figure 1) to come as close to providing adequate space for ore and the ground talc in the new plant as money and judgement would allow. Since our engineering staff did not have the time to design and engineer the new facility, an architectural firm with complete engineering staff was retained. Our original thought was to contract all phases of the construction and installation, however, and I think this is a most important point for any small firm such as ours, we found that with good supervision we, as the contractor, could do the job faster and at a lower cost than the construction firms that bid on the work. For some 50 odd years Italian talc has had a virtual monopoly in the body powder area of the cosmetic industry. Due to the purity, superior lubricity and whiteness, naturally occurring in the talc from Italy, no talc in the Western Hemisphere could capture any but a very small part of the market. When the Italian supply was cut off during World War II, the United States' largest consumer of this talc decided that it was time to develop a domestic source of a satisfactory replacement.

In several previous studies from this laboratory (1-4) the autophobicity concept of Zisman and co-workers (5, 6) has been extended to gas phase adsorption processes. Low molecular weight alcohols adsorb on silica or alumina to yield novel isotherms in that monolayer adsorption occurs at low relative pressures indicative of strong bonding, but subsequently multilayer adsorption is quite sparse and diminishes with molecular weight of the alcohol. Such isotherms fit no standard classification scheme, however, in the vacinity of monolayer coverage alcohol isotherms give an excellent fit to the Langmuir or B. E. T. , Type I model (7). Monolayer adsorption is relatively irreversible and it is thus possible to prepare these chemisorbed layers and perform subsequent adsorption studies thereon. All indications are that the adsorptive properties on such films is radically different from that on the underlying alumina (4, 8) and in one study finite contact angles for hydrocarbon fluids were observed. One perennial conceptual difficulty is that there is no observed upper bound to the adsorption isotherm which would be necessary for autophobic adsorption to occur. The cause for this has been studied, and it is currently believed that adsorption is complicated by reversible capillary condensation at contact points between powder particles. The evidence for this is that large particle powders give less "apparent" adsorption at high relative pressures and in one very tedious study adsorption on planar sheets, oxidized aluminum displayed similar reduced uptake at high relative pressures when compared with high specific surface area powders (3).

Chemically, mica is a complex silicate of sodium, potassium and aluminum. There are no important uses of mica where the chemical analysis is important, except that in some uses of ground mica, the content of iron oxide present as an impurity must be kept to a very low limit. Muscovite mica is frequently found containing black and red "stain" as a homogeneous part of the books or sheets. In most cases this stain or impurity is magnetite or hematite. Some mica contains impurities deposited by infiltration. This is commonly a red stain, less often brown or white. The best mica is free from all such impurities, and the greater their content, the less value does the mica have.(1) It is because of these undesirable impurities that a large segment of the fine ground mica industry relies on weathered pegmatites and alaskite ores as a source of raw material. The mica concentrates obtained from these ores are relatively clean and require moderate beneficiation to meet color and density specifications. One need only to observe the stained and decrepitated condition of the mica recovered from mica schist to appreciate the challenge that processing this material presents. Despite these adversities there are several advantages to be gained by mining and processing mica schist ores. The mica content of these ores are considerably higher than the pegmatites and alaskite ores now being mined, often containing in excess of forty percent mica. This-higher grade mica feed should promote a lower mining and milling cost with its resulting competative advantage. With more rigid government

Campbell Red Lake Mine is situated at Balmertown, in the Red Lake District of Northwestern Ontario, Canada. This area is some 120 miles north of the Trans Canada Highway and is some 160 miles Northeast of Winnipeg, Manitoba. The majority of our 300 employees live in Balmertown, which is a community of some 1,200 people, situated adjacent to the mine proper. The mine is serviced by a single shaft 4,300 feet deep. There are 27 levels at 150 ft. intervals. Stoping is being carried out down to the 20th level with only preliminary development having been done on the bottom 6 levels. The majority of our mill feed of 825 tons per calendar day comes from above the 10th level. Gold occurs as specks and streaks in bluish-grey to white quartz carbonate veins. It is extremely fine grained and most is invisible to the unaided eye. In addition to Gold the veins carry varying amounts of sulphides such as, Arsenopyrite, Stibnite, Pyrite, Pyrrhotite and Sphalerite. A minor amount of silver occurs as an impurity in the gold. Arsenopyrite is a marker for the gold ore at Campbell. The average grade of the mill feed is 0.7 oz. of gold per ton. The ore is dumped into an underground ore pass that feeds to a jaw crusher on the 20th level that reduces the rock to a maximum size of 4". This material is hoisted by skips to an ore bin in the head frame.

The investigation into the hydrologic and hydrogeochemical influence of longwall coal mining in the Appalachian coal basin was under- taken in response to the need to technically address problems of damaged or impaired well yields, and quality deterioration. Prior to this study, issues regarding reduced aquifer yields and degraded water quality had to be handled in a very qualitative manner. Such an approach would, in the long run, claim a heavy toll on the mining industry. The primary objective of this undertaking, therefore, was to provide sufficient and reliable information base for the determination of the local and possibly the regional effects of longwall mining on well yields, and the hydraulic and hydrogeochemical parameters of the immediate surface and subsurface water systems. Specifically, the program was designed to supply definitive data to answer the following series of questions: 1. Does longwall mining affect the quantity and quality of water in local wells above and adjacent to longwall panels and barrier pillars? 2. If the water quality is affected as soon as mining takes place, does it heal? or if it is not affected immediately, does it change over a longer period of time? 3. How do the aquifer water transmitting characteristics respond to induced physical ad hydrologic variations? 4. What is the extent of the various changes in quantity and quality of the water resources? 5. Should and can standard hydrologic evaluation techniques be used to determine the hydraulic properties of highly fractured zones located within a larger and less permeable aquifer?

The Irwin Basin. (Fig. 1)* is a synclinal or shoe-horn *Figure numbers throughout refer to color slides not included with the preprint shaped basin in the Pittsburgh Coal Seam, It is approximately 10 miles wide and 22 miles long at its maximum points. The surface of the land above the basin is hilly, rolling farmland,, typical of this area of Pennsylvania, and it is criss-crossed with streams and highways and liberally dotted with farm houses and communities. In-general the coal is pitched from north to south with a total drop of 610 feet'. The coal seam cross-section from east to west is bowl-shaped and rises as much as 375 feet from the low point of the bowl to-the-outcrop. Cross-sections showing coal elevations are shown on Figs, 4 and 50 Ground cover above the coal will vary from 0 to 550 feet, averaging about 350 feet throughout the area. This area is richly endowed with a history of coal mining. The first car of coal shipped cast of the Allegheny Mountains was mined in the Westmoreland Coal Company's Shady Grove (later North Side) Colliery in Irwin, Pa., early in 1853, This mine was opened in 1852 by Coleman, Hillman & Company. The coal was hauled from the mine to the freight station by horse-drawn wagon and. loaded into a then "standard" box car of 18,000-pound capacity. Coal mining in this region flourished and grew as steel production in nearby Pittsburgh demanded more and more of the high quality, metallurgical-grade coal of the region.

Long-term monitoring is necessary to successfully develop predictive subsidence models. Thus, the Illinois Mine Subsidence Research Program (IMSRP) has documented subsidence over a longwall mine in south-central Illinois throughout a 3-year period. No monitoring results of this duration have been previously published for longwall mining in Illinois. To study the effects of surface subsidence and the rate of subsidence, precise level surveying was conducted at the site two or three times a year. Level surveys were conducted at approximately the same time of year using a WILD NA-2 level with a micrometer. Second-Order, Class-I, closure errors were obtained in each survey. Survey monuments were designed to minimize frost-induced movements. At this particular site in southern Illinois, subsidence over chain pillars and the panel centerline continued 3 years after mining. Since mining in 1988, 6.67 feet of subsidence or 70% of the extracted height has been documented over the panel centerline, with almost 0.30 feet in the last two years. The area over the chain pillars has subsided a total of 1.44 feet, with 0.44 feet occurring within the last 2 years. Monitoring over the chain pillars and at the centerline shows the residual subsidence to be fairly uniform. Monitoring is continuing over both of these areas. Long-term monitoring data can be used to improve evaluation of subsidence effects on land and structures. However, coal companies will time mitigation activities depending on other factors including the threshold of structural damage, type of repair needed, and maintenance of landowner and company relations.

The DEAREX knowledge acquisition and engineering system is a teaching and exploration tool designed to facilitate the under- standing and development of expert systems by explorationists without the aid of a knowledge engineer and without recourse to expert system languages. To fulfill its objective, the DEAREX system considers the selection of exploration methods in desert areas. The system consists of three parts: 1. A tutorial which introduces the basic and selected advanced concepts of expert systems, 2. A sample program illustrating how an expert system works and can be used, and, most importantly, 3. A knowledge acqusition and engineering program which enables users to develop their own expert systems. The tutorial provides a brief and concise introduction to expert systems, a 10 rule exploration example which defines, explains and illustrates the basic concepts and design of expert systems, and a glossary of expert system terms including cross references. The sample program is a larger, self contained example of an expert system with some commentary illustrating addition- al expert system concepts and the role of the knowledge engineer in particularizing rules and ascertaining the knowledge base. Restricting itself to the selection of exploration methods in desert areas, the knowledge acquisition and engineering program questions the user and converts the answers into an expert system. Questions pertain to geology, infrastructure, availability of instrumentation, personnel, etc. Additional information may also included. In conclusion, some salient points concerning knowledge engineering toolkits, shells and knowledge acquisition capabilities such as contained in DEAREX are discussed.
