A PROCESS that has come to be known locally as "multistage stabiliza-tion" has been developed in the Haft Kel field of the Anglo-Iranian Oil Co. in southwest Iran, for the recovery of casinghead gasoline. It con-sists in releasing the dissolved gases from the crude by stages, a practice common in many fields, but which, so far as is known, has nowhere been carried to the extent to which it is employed in Iran. It has been in use there for nearly nine years, during which time some 200 million barrels of crude have been handled by the process. This process of gasoline retention consists in preventing the greater part of the casinghead gasoline hydrocarbons (the butanes and pentanes) from ever leaving the crude, instead of allowing them to be vaporized and then recovered from the lighter gases by the usual compression or absorption processes. Its efficiency is fully equal to that obtained by the absorption process; its disadvantage is that it increases the quantities of ethane and propane in the crude sent to the refinery, but with the growing demand for propane this drawback is vanishing. When casinghead gasoline is recovered as a separate liquid in the Iranian fields, it is blended with the crude, as the only outlet is through the refinery, and the crude-oil pipe line offers the cheapest means of transportation. It is under these conditions that the retention of the butanes and pentanes in the crude by multistage stabilization is a most attractive process, possessing as it does the following advantages: (1) extreme simplicity, (2) low first cost, (3) easy installation, (4) practically 100 per cent operating-time efficiency, (5) no operators required, (6) no water or other services required, (7) negligible maintenance, (8) once established, very little routine testing is necessary. The one essential for reasonably efficient multistage stabilization is that the flowing pressures of the wells should be relatively high; i.e., they should not be less than about one-third the saturation pressure of the crude in the reservoir. This is a very general statement, of course, and much depends on the type of crude and its temperature.

In a constant-load creep test, if the density of nlobile dislocations is assumed constant for strains exceeding that corvesponding to the minimum creep rate, it is shown that the creep rate may be approximated by the equation where E is the nominal strain, o0. is the initial stress, and a' the stress fov unit dislocation velocity. The constant C contains the mean density of mobile dislocations and n is a measure of the stress sensitivity of dislocation celocity. This equation is shoum to be applicable to published data on an alloy steel and on nickel. The degree of plastic instability and hence the creep ductility is dependent on the calue of n for these materials. When instability becomes gross and local macroscopic necking occurs, the assumptions are no longer valid. On the basis of this equation, and the strain-time relation derived from it, a method of predicting the creep behavior at different stresses is suggested. MOst analyses of creep data have been concerned with time-dependent transient creep or time-independ- ent secondary creep in constant-stress tests. The far more widely used constant-load test has been neglected in terms of a mechanistic approach. In general, since the strains involved are usually small, the same laws for transient creep may be applied to both types of tests. However, there is no steady-state creep in a constant-load test since the stress increases continuously. Any apparent steady state observed on a strain-time plot is either fortuitous or illusory, and is generally revealed as a continuously varying creep rate on a carefully constructed strain rate vs time plot.* Transient creep may be understood in terms of a simple differential equation representing the change in mobile dislocation density with time:' where p is the density of mobile dislocations. The first term on the right is related to first-order kinetics of dislocation multiDlication and the second to second-order kinetics of exhaustion. The problem of mine pumping is so much affected by local conditions, and those conditions are so liable to changes during the life of a mine, that the best system to use is difficult to determine. The experience of the writer has been that, in general, for copper mines, electric pumping is most satisfactory unless the quantity of water to be pumped is great or the mine does not use electric power for any other purpose. As a rule, however, figuring on the cost of necessary power plant, the total cost of installation is greater with electric pumps than steam pumps. As the water is liable to be gritty, outside-packed plunger pumps are to be recommended, and if the water is not acid, or only slightly so, chilled cast-iron plungers pay for their extra cost very quickly in diminished cost of packing. With chilled plungers it is possible to use metallic packing instead of soft packing, if the water is not too gritty or the lift too high. In vertical pumps this packing is satisfactory for lifts up to 400 ft., in the experience of the writer, and may be found satisfactory for higher lifts. For water slightly acid, cement-lined pump bodies have given good satisfaction. For acid water, both plungers and puhp bodies should be made of acid-resisting bronze. For high lifts, especially with gritty water, a satisfactory pump valve is difficult to find. To reduce the unbalanced pressure on the valve at time of opening it is advisable to have narrow seats; this, however, brings high pressures on the seats when the valve is closed. On large valves for lifts of 600 to 1,000 ft. we have used leather, hard rubber, vulcanized fiber, and soft brass; for clear water the latter has given best satisfaction. The difficulties due to grit make it advisable to have large sumps where water can settle, and if possible, to have two of them so that they can be cleaned alternately. At the mines of the Old Dominion Copper Mining & Smelting Co., Globe, it was found that a small air ejector discharging into a mine car provides a very convenient way to clean mud and sand from a sump.

LEAD-REFINING practice at the. Bunker Hill differs to some extent from that of other United States refineries using the Parkes process, in that the Bunker Hill-has reverted to a custom used years ago of making two kinds of skims, or crusts, in the desilverizing kettles. Also, this was the first refinery to adopt the liquation process for silver skims as developed in Australia. Both of these ideas were brought to the attention of the operator by H. S. J. Sommerset, in the summer of 1924, while he was visiting metallurgical plants in the United States, when he was general superintendent of the Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty., Ltd., of Port Pirie, South Australia. Since Mr. Sommerset's visit, United States patents on the liquation process have been issued to George Kenneth Williams, of Port Pirie, South Australia. At the Bunker Hill, the lead bullion is conveyed from the blast furnaces to the refinery in brick-lined cast-steel pots, each having a capacity of 5 tons, by a 20-ton electric crane, to which is suspended a Fairbanks-Morse suspension-type scale on which the gross, tare and net weights are obtained. The bullion is poured from the small bullion pots into either one of two kettles of 105 tons capacity, and when a kettle is entirely filled the heavy dross is removed by skimming it into a 5-ton pot suspended by the crane. The crane operator becomes proficient in the manipulation and a kettle is skimmed in a very short time. After the kettle is skimmed clean the bullion is pumped to a kettle of the same size alongside, where the bullion is cooled until it has almost frozen. By using two kettles for the drossing operation, one to accumulate the bullion where the heavy dross is removed, and then pumping to a clean kettle comparatively free of hangings, etc., it is possible to reduce the copper content much lower than if only one kettle is used in the operation. The average yearly analysis of bullion is given in Table 1.

THE practical importance of the phenomena of melting and freezing must have been recognized for a very long time. The difference between ice and water, for example, has had a profound influence on the history of mankind and the evolution of society. The possibility of melting a metal and allowing it to freeze in a mold of chosen shape has been an essential ingredient in our mastery of the art of shaping metals, and therefore in the evolution of the: machine age in which we find ourselves. The importance of melting and freezing, as applied to metals and alloys, has been so great, in fact, that empirical solutions have been found for the multitude of practical problems that have arisen. This approach has been so successful that relatively little attention has been directed to arriving at an understanding of the fundamentals of the processes. But metallurgy has come to a stage at which we may expect that some, at least, of the more complex problems that have not yet been solved (or perhaps even recognized) may be handled more effectively by scientific study, theoretical understanding, and logical experimentation than by trial and error. In this lecture, therefore, I propose to describe in outline what I think really happens when a metal freezes. In doing so I hope to explain many of the phenomena which have been observed, and in particular to account for the structures that are obtained in actual ingots and castings. The basic problem, to which this lecture represents a tentative partial answer, is this: a mass of metal, containing known proportions of various elements, is melted, heated to a given temperature, and then allowed to freeze under specified conditions. What will be the "structure" of the resulting metal? The term structure includes: 1—crystal size, shape, and orientations, 2—distribution of chemical elements, and 3-—shape, including cracks, cavities, pores, etc. The Solid-Liquid Interface We will first consider what takes place if a single crystal of a metal in the form of a rod is heated, not uniformly, but so that one end is hotter than the other. If this heating process is continued long enough, the hotter end will eventually melt; we will suppose that the rod is in a containing vessel so that the molten metal does not run away, Fig. 1. When some of the metal has melted, we have some solid, some liquid, and an interface or surface of contact between them. If the source of heat is now removed, the interface will move so that some of the liquid freezes, and if the supply of heat is suitably adjusted the interface will remain at rest. This very simple arrangement allows us to study the basic processes of melting and freezing, and if we fully understand this simple case, we may be able to account for what takes place under practical conditions where the heat does not all flow in the same direction, and where the heat flow is determined not by a controllable source of heat but by the heat capacity and temperature of metal and mold, and by the heat loss from the mold surface. The solid-liquid interface is evidently the region of the greatest interest to us; on one side of it there is crystalline solid, and on the other, liquid. In the solid, each atom has a well defined position, around which it vibrates as a result of thermal agitation. It only leaves this position in the relatively rare event of a "diffusion jump." The liquid is much less systematically organized. The atoms are about as far from their neighbors as in the solid, but the arrangement is much less systematic and is continuously changing. The solid and the liquid are represented diagrammatically in Fig. 2. The average energy of the atoms in the liquid is greater than in the solid by an amount that corresponds to the latent heat of fusion, i.e., the amount of heat that has to be supplied to convert unit mass of solid into liquid at the same temperature. The Two Processes As has recently been shown by Jackson and Chalmers,3 many of the features of the processes of freezing and melting can be understood if it is assumed that a continuous and rapid interchange of atoms between solid and liquid always takes place at a solid-liquid interface." The mining and ventilating system used in development work in the Pittsburgh Seam in northern West Virginia is discussed. The seam conditions and the nature of the accompanying methane gas are described. The type of equipment and the mining cycle will be discussed, showing how they are well suited for very gaseous development work. Face ventilation in development work is possibly the fastest growing problem of the industry. The coal mines of the future will be faced with the prospect of mining from under increasing depths of cover. Consequently, larger and larger amounts of methane gas probably will be found. The Pittsburgh Seam, in northern West Virginia, is an example of an area already faced with this problem. At the present time, most of the development work being done in this seam lies beneath 500 to 1200 ft of cover. The Pittsburgh Seam in this area has always been very gassy—even near the outcrop—and the recent development work has been accompanied with extremely large volumes of gas. In many cases, a single development section has liberated in excess of 1,000,000 cfm in 24 hr. This problem of heavy gas liberation was the chief concern, several years ago, when continuous mining equipment was first considered at Christopher Coal Co. All of us were apprehensive about the liberation that would accompany rapid extraction in a single working place. However, the experience during the past few years has shown that this ability to mine only one place at a time, is actually the key to working this type of coal. With all of the mining or advancement concentrated in one place, the ventilation can also be concentrated. By this it is meant that continuous mining permits the active working place to be ventilated with a maximum amount of fresh air, taken directly from the intake source without first passing another working place. Continuous mining (and a good ventilating system) also permits a much greater concentration of attention or vigilance to the actual working place. There are two things that are very important to the mining of coal having high rates of liberation. First, adequate volumes of air are necessary. Second, and perhaps more important, a mining and ventilating system must be used that will provide an uninterrupted flow of air to every portion of the working section. Liberations of this magnitude take only a few seconds of interruption for a dangerous accumulation of gas to occur. With adequate volumes of air available, the ability to concentrate ventilation more than offsets the concentration of gas emission that is inherent with continuous mining. The mining system used with continuous mining equipment at Humphrey Mine is similar to the system used at many mines in the area for development work. This system is designed to favor ventilation, realizing that other efficiencies are meaningless if the equipment must stop because of ventilation difficulties. This plan is especially well suited to minimizing ventilation interruptions. Basically, the overall plan of mining is to develop headings into virgin coal and encircle or block out large areas. These blocks are generally at least 2000 ft sq. The purpose of this blocking out is to bleed gas from the area before pillaring. Experience has shown this method to be quite effective, even in the most gassy areas. The gas in this field seems to migrate or flow readily from the solid coal into the outside return headings of the development work. The numerous clay veins and slips that are found in the area are extremely good avenues for gas flow. A block of coal, surrounded with development headings, usually bleeds off readily; and since it is cut off from the virgin coal, it is not subject to gas migration, through the seam, from this source. However, the outside return of the encircling development work, adjacent to the virgin coal, may liberate gas for years. This liberation from the outside ribs in the virgin coal is the reason split ventilation is used in development work. If split ventilation were not used, there would, in many cases, be a serious build-up of gas in the intake before it could reach the working face. Fig. 1 shows a typical development section having seven headings. The two outside places on each side are returns, and the three center headings serve as intakes. A generalized rate equation for the reduction of iron oxide was derived from which two particular equations were obtained: one for rate controlled by the transportation of gas, the other for rate controlled by the phase-boundary reaction. Pellets of pure ferric oxide having diameters of 8.5 to 17.5 mm and a density of 4.8 g per cm3 were prepared and reduced by hydrogen at 750° to 900°C. From the analysis of data obtairzed, it was observed that neither the phase-houndarv reaction nor the transportation of gas controlled entirely the rate of redziction. Rather, the mechanism of reduction can he divided into three stages. In the beginning, the process seems to depend predominantly on the surJrce reaction, hut after a layer of iron is formed the diffusion of gas becomes the controlling factor. Towards the end, however, the rate falls sharply due to a decrease in porosity. The times predicted by the generalized equation for a certain degree of reduction showed an excellent agreement with those obtained experinmentally for pellets of varying sizes. WIDE interest in iron oxide reduction has resulted in many valuable studies pertaining to thermody-namical properties, equilibrium diagrams, and chemical kinetics. Although the thermodynamical properties and equilibrium diagrams are now known with a fair degree of accuracy, the mechanism and rate-controlling step in the reduction of iron oxides presents a problem to research workers which is still unsolved. This is because the field of chemical kinetics is so highly complex. Besides the chemical reaction between oxide and reducing gas, several other processes are occurring simultaneously such as solid-state diffusion of iron through intermediate oxides (FeO and Fe3O4), the diffusion of reducing gas inwards and of product gas outwards, and the sintering of iron if reduction is carried out above the sintering temperature of iron. Furthermore, there is a large number of variables, including the nature and flow rate of the reducing gas, the chemical composition and physical properties of the ore, the temperature of reaction, particle size, and so forth, all of which can affect both the mechanism and the kinetics of reduction. Despite the controversy and diversity of opinion about the mechanism of iron oxide reduction, three main schools of thought have emerged. According to the first, the rate is controlled by the diffusion of gas through the boundary layer of stagnant gas; the second claims that the rate is proportional to the area of the metal-oxide interface, while the third believes the transportation of reducing gas from the main stream to the metal-oxide interface and of product gas from the metal-oxide interface to the main stream to be the rate-controlling step. 1) The boundary-layer theory is true mainly for packed beds where the flow of gas through the bed is important. For a single particle, the boundary layer may be prevented from being the rate-controlling step if a gas flow rate of reducing gas above the critical flow rate is used. 2) Several workers have reported a linear advance of the Fe/FeO interface which provides excellent support for the belief that reduction is controlled by the surface area. McKewanl has given formal shape to this concept with mathematical derivation and has shown it to be valid for reduction of several iron ores, hematite, and magnetite, both by H2 and H2, H2O, N2 mixtures. Some other investigators, however, do not find this theory to be entirely valid. Deviations have been observed2 and further confirmedS3 Hansen4 also agrees that deviations do occur, at least in the latter stages of reduction, while from the data of several investigators summarized by Themelis and Gauvin,5 it is clear that the theory is not always applicable and further that, when it is applicable, it does not hold in the final stages of reduction. 3) Among those who claim the transportation of gas to be the rate-controlling step are Udy and Lorig,6 Bogdandy and Janke,7 and Kawasaki el a1.8 The validity of the theory has also been acknowledged indirectly by other research workers who show that the sintering and recrystallization of iron cause a decrease in reduction rate, for it is only if the transportation of gas is important that this sintering has any bearing. THE instrument about to be described meets so perfectly the special needs of the metal microscopist that there seems to be little doubt but its merits must be readily appreciated by those who have had any experience in the microscopical examination of metals. The Microscope-Stand.-The microscope-stand proper, Fig. 1, consists of a microscope-tube, provided with both coarse and fine adjustments of the best construction, and with a draw-tube, rigidly mounted on a bar supported at both ends on substantial and firm cast-iron legs. The height between the table and the under side of the supporting bar is 5 in. and the distance between the supporting legs 12 inches. This arrangement' affords free space below the objective for the examination of large specimens of metals, such as full rail-sections, without detracting in the least from the value of the instrument when applied to the examination of the usual small specimen, as explained later. Many metal microscopists frequently have to examine bulky specimens, and this is altogether impossible with the ordinary microscopes as well as with the special metallurgical microscopes which have been designed and described from time to time. Recourse must be had to all sorts of makeshifts for the proper support of large specimens, or, more often, the microscopist gives up the attempt altogether, or else resigns himself to the cutting of the bulky samples into small pieces to -be laboriously polished and separately examined. WAR has wrought sharp and sudden changes in the pattern of the oil industry. The most obvious and most striking of such changes have been in the fields of transportation and refining. A third of the world's total oil production formerly started to market, tanker-borne, over the waters of the Gulf and Caribbean. Most of this oil went to our North Atlantic ports, supply points for the world's greatest consuming center. This tremendous traffic, disrupted by the loss of tankers as a result of requisition for military purposes and by the activity of enemy submarines, has had to be substituted largely by such lines of supply as could be improvised without loss of too much time. No single solution for this gigantic problem has been found nor is it likely to be entirely solved for some time to come. It has been solved in part, however, by rearrangement, reversals, and patching up of existing pipe-line systems; by overland transport of crude and products in tank cars on a scale never before attempted; by barging over inland waterways; and through the construction at long last of the "big-inch" line, the first leg of which is just being put into operation as far as Norris City, III. The tank-car traffic alone, reaching a peak of deliveries of 856,710 barrels per day into District 1 during the week ending Sept. 19, 1942, and accomplished at an expense of millions of dollars in extraordinary transportation costs, defrayed by the Defense Supply Corp. and by the mobilization of tank cars from all over the nation, is a story worth the telling but by some of those who directed it.

THE investigations of Wyman1 have demonstrated that copper deoxidized with several of the commonly used agents that confer immunity to ordinary hydrogen em-brittlement can still be embrittled if it is annealed alternately under oxidizing and reducing conditions. During the oxidizing cycle, oxygen diffuses into the copper and frequently deposits a subscale composed of the oxide of the residual deoxidizing agent. Upon subsequent reduction with hot hydro-gen, the copper becomes ruptured along the grain boundaries to a depth sharply limited by the previous penetration of oxy-gen as delineated by the inner boundary of the subscale. Obviously the sensitivity to this kind of hydrogen embrittlement is engendered by the introduction of oxygen during the oxi-dizing anneal, but beyond this the mecha-nism of the process, and hence the controlling factors, remain obscure. There are several possibilities: (I) oxygen dissolved in the copper matrix of the subscale may, upon cooling prior to the hydrogen anneal, precipitate as cuprous oxide which is subse-quently reduced by hydrogen as in the familiar case of hydrogen embrittlement; (2) oxygen in solid solution in copper may itself confer susceptibility to embrittlement by hydrogen; (3) the normally refractory oxides such as those of aluminum, silicon and titanium may themselves he reduced by hydrogen when in contact with copper; or (4) the precipitated oxides of the sub-scale may be complex compounds such, perhaps, as Si02-Cu20, which are partially reduced by hydrogen. These possibilities have been examined, and it has been con-cluded that the first three and possibly the fourth are operative collectively or indi-vidually under more or less predictable conditions.

Except in the case of a few metals—silicon, bismuth, cadmium, lead, zinc, and tin—an aluminum-rich compound is formed in each binary system, which forms a eutectic with the aluminum or its solid solution with this compound: Thus such compounds as FeAla, CuA12, Mg4Al3, and NiAls are formed, which are found in aluminum-rich alloys of their respective series as eutectics with the aluminum solid solution. These compounds are, in all cases, hard and brittle and their presence affects profoundly the physical properties of the alloys in which they occur. Within the zinc-aluminum system a compound, Al2Zn,, is formed that decomposes at lower temperatures. Silicon and tin each form a simple eutectiferous series with aluminum; bismuth, lead, and cadmium are only partly miscible in the liquid state with it. The extent of the solubility in aluminum, in solid solution, of these compounds or of the elements themselves, in the case of those series in which compounds are not formed, is of the greatest importance in

The present state of knowledge of three-dimensional rock properties does not provide an adequate basis for evaluating the safety of under- ground structures in situ. Most of the triaxial studies reported in the past have dealt with crushing strength, but have failed to consider the intergranular behavior and triaxial strain state of rocks. Without this information, the structural competence of rocks cannot be accurately assessed. The absolute three-dimensional testing method (ATT) was conceived for the purpose of analyzing the three-dimensional states of stresses and strains in aggregate rocks under conditions commonly encountered in underground structures. In-situ stress-strain states are not simple, even in the simplest possible form of opening, excavated in a homogeneous and isotropic rock medium. In general, there are four basic stress-strain states which are present in underground openings, regardless of the complexity of their geological conditions. They are the yielded, brittle-fractured, stress-relieved, stress-concentrated states, as illustrated in the schematic diagram, Fig. 1. The ATT machine was designed to create and study all these states in the laboratory. A theory describing the aggregate behavior of rocks under these diversified states is essential to evaluate the safety of underground structures. The Griffith theory is limited to tensile failure of ductile materials and therefore does not apply to behavior of aggregate rocks under compression. The Griffith theory also fails to consider the grain boundary characteristics of aggregates, which is the determining factor of rock behavior. The object of this paper is to enlarge the field of settling velocities treated by me in my former papers, Close Sizing Before Jigging, and Sorting Before Sizing.' There seemed need of work both on coarser and on finer sizes. Messrs. A. Sidney Warren and M. L. Nagel undertook the investigation for the coarser sizes, from 12.85 mm. down to 2.05 mm. diameter. Their work, because of the closer spacing and because of the increased number of observations and consequent stronger averages, called for a revision of the former work. Messrs. G. A. Barnaby and Ralph Hayden undertook this part of the work, from 2.49 mm. down to 0.28 mm., which is near the limit of sifting. Their work covers the ground much more minutely and comprehensively than the former papers. There remained to be covered the portion of the field too fine for investigation with the sieves. This part, covering the range of grains from 0.48 to 0.03 mm., was undertaken by Mr. E. S. Bardwell. For it he used the elutriation method. 11. The First, or Coarsest, Section of the Field. The first desideratum in this investigation was a series of sieves for sizing the sands preparatory to making the tests. It became necessary, therefore, to decide on a sieve-scale for this purpose. A sieve-scale is a series of sieves in which the dimensions of the holes of the successive members form a series increasing by a definite ratio. Attention has been given to the sources and supply of the raw vegetal matter and the conditions of its submission to the process of sedimentation. An original and most valuable review has been made of the more important or significant chemical compounds originally contained in the organic dct,ris, and of the biochemical changes undergone by the latter during deposition. Consideration also has been given to the factors controlling the selective biochemical decomposition, in whole or in part, of this debris, and the deposition, as sediments, of the undecom-posed plant structures and compounds, together with more or less of the so-called "ulmic," or "humic," organic decomposition products in colloidal so1ution. Biochemical Changes End in Peat Formation The biochemical process terminates in the peat stage of coal formation, and with the cessation of this process organic sedimentation is completed. All subsequent changes result from geological causes and conditions. The deposits are in the form of peats of different types, organic muds, oozes, etc. They are essentially uncompressed and are wholly uncon-solidated, and their water content is great, amounting to over 85 per cent, near the surface of the deposit. Many of the chemical compounds remain as in the once living organisms; others are biochemically broken down and new ones formed. Geochemical and Geophysical Changes in Buried Deposits Subsequent Changes " Dynamochemical" The changes which subsequently take place through dehydration, lithification, and simultaneous progressive chemical alteration, by which organic sediments are advanced to brown lignite, subbituminous, bituminous, semianthracitic, and graphitic ranks, are geochemical and geophysical, and the process, which really is metamorphic,2 takes place under dynamic influences. The investigation of the phase relations of high-purity aluminum-base alloys is a part of the fundamental research program of the laboratories of the Aluminum Company of America. The results of a number of binary and ternary systems have previously been published in the Transactions of this society. The aluminum end of the binary aluminum-titanium system has been studied. This system has received relatively little attention. To the authors' knowledge, there are two previous papers on this subject. E. van Erckelensl determined the constitutional diagram reproduced in Fig. 1. According to this diagram, the liquidus represents the separation of TiA14, (Ti = 30.7 per cent.). He concluded that this is the composition of the compound, because in his work the eutectic horizontal terminated at 30.7 per cent. titanium and the metallographic examinalion of a sample of this composition revealed only one phase. According to the constitutional diagram developed by W. Manchot and A. Leber,² reproduced in Fig. 2 from data given in their article, the liquidus represents the separation of the compound TiA13 (Ti = 37.2 per cent. ). The composition of the compound was derived in a manner similar to that utilized by van Erckelens. Moreover, Manchot and Leber confirmed the composition of the compound by analysis of the constituent left as a residue after dissolving the alloys in weak sodium hydroxide solution. Although these are the only publications describing the constitution of the system, other investigators have studied the composition of the titanium compound. L. WÖhler3 says that there is a compound TiA13 which was later confirmed by W. Manchot and P. Richter4 and by

PROF. EDWARD ORTON, in his Report on the Occurrence of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Asphalt Rock in Western Kentucky, thus clearly states his ideas of the universal dissemination and rare accumulations of the bitumens:1 " We need to bear in mind that the various members of the bituminous series are abundantly and almost universally distributed among the unaltered sedimentary rocks of the earth's crust. The valuable accumulations of these substances are rare, it is true, but one can scarcely go amiss of petroleum, asphalt or gas, at least in small quantities, among the stratified rocks that retain their original structure." Speaking of the Ohio valley, he adds: "A fifth of one per cent. of petroleum, if distributed through a, thousand feet of rock, would make a total to the acre, or square mile far , beyond any production that has ever been realized from the richest oil field, and percentages of this amount are not only not rare to find, but are even hard to miss." Dr. F. W. Clarke in his Data of Geochemistry (Bulletin No. 491, U. S. Geological Survey, 1911), discussing these views of Orton with similar views of T. Sterry Hunt and Szajnocha, says that they "lead to the conviction that the formation of bitumens is a general process and by no means exceptional. Wherever sediments are laid down, inclosing either animal or vegetable matter, there bitumens may be produced."2 The organic origin of the bitumens, including petroleum, has long been an accepted fact with nearly all geologists, but the method, place, and time of the transformation into petroleum or other bitumen is still under discussion.

The objective of the present study was to detennine the role played by double bonds in the flotation of a very pure mineral using 18-carbon unsaturated fatty acids as collectors. Streaming potential measurements were made on a plug of pure synthetic rutile in solutions of inorganic electrolytes and unsaturated 18-carbon fatty acid soaps. Experimental results from these tests are detailed in the paper. The collector effectiveness of oleic acid with one double bond, linoleic acid with two double bonds, and linolenic acid with three double bonds has been a matter of speculation for many years, and conflic- ting experimental evidence1-8 has not clarified the issue. The overall objective of the present study was to determine the role played by double bonds in the flotation of a very pure mineral using 18-carbon un-saturated fatty acids as collectors. Since zeta potential is dependent on adsorption and orientation of ions at the solid-liquid interface, its variation under different conditions of pH and collector concentration should throw some light on the behavior of unsatu-rated fatty acids in flotation pulps. Titanium dioxide, in the form of rutile, was chosen for the investigation because it is now available in a very pure, synthetic, crystalline state, and despite the fact that it is one of the most important synthetic inorganic chemicals in commercial use, its electro-kinetic properties have not been closely studied. Electrokinetic properties of rutile in various aqueous solutions are discussed in this paper. The reduction of iron oxide, such as Fe203, to iron in the blast furnace is performed principally by carbon monoxide, but partly by solid carbon by the two following reactions: Fe2O3 + 3CO = 2Fe 4- 3CO2 2Fe2O3 + 3C = 4Fe + 3CO2 It is known that reduction by carbon monoxide takes place at a much lower temperature than reduction by carbon and that the reducing action of earbon monoxide progresses to the inside of the ore in lump form by gaseous diffusion. In the reduction by carbon, however, the reducing action takes place only at the contact surface of the ore and carbon, so that the more complete the reduction by carbon monoxide, the more efficient is the operation. However, the reduction does not progress as shown in the foregoing equation, because carbon dioxide acts oxidizingly on the metallic iron to such a degree that when the gaseous composition reaches a certain proportion of carbon dioxide to carbon monoxide, the reduction practically stops, even though the gases are moving slowly through the heated ore. The proportions of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide in the gas depend on the kind of iron oxide and the temperature of reduction, also on the duration of time in the reaction. The longer the time of the reaction, the higher the proportion of carbon dioxide obtained in the gas, but finally it will attain to a condition of equilibrium. Stretching from New York southwestwardly to Georgia is a great range of hills and mountains consisting of pre-Palæozoic schists, slates, .and gneissic and granitoid rocks, known locally by many different names; in Pennsylvania as the South mountains, the Berkshire or Durham and Reading hills, and in Virginia and farther south as the Blue ridge. To the northwest of this range lies the " Great Valley," underlain by Lower Silurian limestones, and known as the Lehigh valley, Cumberland valley, Shenandoah valley, valley of Eastern Tennessee and Georgia and by other local names, but all these are parts of one valley, geologically and geographically continuous from New Jersey to Georgia. Lying upon and along the northern flank of this range of mountains, and dipping northwestwardly under the limestone of the valley, is the Potsdam formation (Primal or No. 1 of the Pennsylvania Geological Survey), which consists of sandstone or conglomerate overlain by slates. The latter are sometimes arenaceous and occasionally are replaced in part by sandstone. This formation varies from a few feet to several hundred feet in thickness. At the outcrop the slates are completely decomposed, oxidized or disintegrated, forming a belt of clay several hundred feet wide occupying the interval between the outcroppings of the sandstone and limestone. This clay-belt includes a more or less continuous series of iron-ore (brown hematite) deposite, which have been, and still are, extensively worked. The belt is more or less continuously milleralized with iron throughout its length, and hundreds of large deposits of ore have been developed and worked, producing many millions of tons of ore.

Advances in the production of quality steel have emphasized the need for greater knowledge of the amount and distribution of oxygen in the steel. Control of inclusion content and quality is largely dependent on such knowledge. While many analytical methods have been devised for the accomplishment of this end, few are without serious limitations in accuracy, convenience, or skill required in application. Usually at least two methods are necessary to determine total oxygen and constituent oxides. Because of the great importance of this problem and the specific interest in the application of such methods of analysis, the various procedures were carefully reviewed at the Union Carbide and Carbon Research Laboratories, with the view of developing a method free from the limitations mentioned above. Intensive experimentation finally led to an improved iodine extraction analysis described by Cunningham and Price.1 After this had been thoroughly checked from the standpoint of the analytical chemist, it was rechecked from that of the metallurgist. This involved preparation of a number of small heats of varying composition with determination of total oxygen in the molten metal by the alumina method2 and an analysis of the solidified material without the aluminum addition by means of iodine extraction; the oxides of iron, manganese, silicon and aluminum also being determined by the iodine analysis. The report of this work constitutes the subject of this paper. The Iodine Method Fundamentally the iodine method is well established.
