The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory and small-scale continuous tests of kyanite ore from Georgia and South Carolina to determine the technical feasibility of recovering commercial grade kyanite concentrates by flotation. The research indicated that combinations if sulfuric acid and petroleum sulfonate may be used effectively for flotation of kyanite from quartzite-kyanite ore. This report summarizes the results of these tests, and demonstrates the feasibility of producing commercial-grade concentrates with a high recovery of the contained kyanite. Extensive deposits of kyanite occur in the southeastern United States. The reserves of these deposits, if developed, are adequate to supply the United States with 35-mesh kyanite concentrate for many years at the present rate of consumption. According to Espenshade and Potter,' the kyanite-quartz rock type deposits in this area contain about 100 million tons of ore averaging 10 to 30% kyanite. The tonnage of kyanite-bearing gneiss and schist is much larger than the tonnage of kyanite-quartz rock, but the kyanite gneiss and schist are appreciably lower in grade. The largest deposits of kyanite-quartz rock are in the Farmville district, Virginia, and Kings Mountain district, North Carolina-South Carolina, and at Graves Mountain, Ga. Of the known deposits, only four were being mined for kyanite in 1 967. These deposits are near Farmville and Dillwyn, Va., Clover, S.C., and Washington, Ga.

DEVELOPMENT of preferred orientation in uranium is of interest because of the strongly anisotropic properties of the orthorhombic crystal structure. Harris&apos; reported inverse pole figures for rolled uranium rods which showed <010> and <410>* to be parallel to the rolling direction after On 0.19-in. spherical X-ray diffraction specimens taken from the center of the middle section of each rod, pole distribution data were obtained by the spectrometric method described previously.4 The specimen was rotated rapidly about the axis coinciding with the rod axis in order that a large number of grains could be scanned and was rotated slowly about an axis perpendicular to the rod axis. The variation in the diffracted X-ray intensity was recorded as a function of the latter motion (angle 4). Fiber-axis distribution charts (inverse pole figures) were prepared by the method described by Setter, McHargue, and Williams." After having been corrected for background radiation, the pole distribution data (I vs ?) were normalized. A normalizing factor for each plane has been shown to be Iranaom = f I sin 4 ? 4 and was obtained by graphical integration from the data for that plane plotted as I sin ? vs ?. INTRODUCTION Because large aqueous suspensions of various fine solids originate during the beneficiation of ores, the Mining Industry constantly requires efficient and feasible dewatering methods. Among the techniques currently in use (1,2), filtration (vacuum, press) and centrifugation are fairly expensive and thus are limited to use with more valuable materials. Furthermore, installations of reasonable size produce only moderate outputs. Therefore, tailings from ore dressing plants are usually treated by sedimentation or settling techniques with a tailings dam as the ultimate sedimentation basin (3). Apart from growing environmental and economic questions, the solid product obtained from the tailings dam basin has in most cases, a rather high moisture content and a persistent semi-fluid consistency. Thus, it is difficult to transport and use further. On the other hand, the solids may be utilized as a filling material, fertilizer, etc. providing they are dry enough and properly granulated. Demands for an improved technique are met to a great extent, by the technique presented in this paper. AGGLOMERATION OF FLOCCIJLATED SLIMES Origin and Qualitative Description of the Process Phenomena of consolidation and pellet formation in flocculated fines were first observed by Yusa and Gaudin (4) while studying rheological properties of flocculated kaolinite. On this basis, methods of separating liquid from solids have been worked out (5-7) and many possibilities for application have been suggested (5,6). The nickel-chromium alloys form the base f for many industrial heating alloys, so that this system is of considerable practical importance. The literature on these alloys, however, contains much conflicting evi-dence, not only regarding the solubility limits of the terminal solid solu-tions at different temperatures but even regarding, the number of phases existing in the system. Part of the difficulty undoubtedly arises from the fact that chromium of sufficiently high purity has been available only during the last few years. A second and possibly even more impor-tant difficulty arises from the ease with which chromium reacts with silicon and carbon compounds and the atmosphere to form silicides, carbides, nitrides and oxides. Pilling and kihlgren1 in 1929 reviewed the existing scanty information. They did not consider the diagram by which they summarized the various bits of information to be entirely satisfactory. Matsunaga2 investigated the system by thermal analysis, microscopic examination and other means. Electrolytic nickel of 99.9 per cent purity and thermit chromium containing 0.30 per cent al, 0.40 per cent fe, 0.25 per cent si and 0.04 per cent c were used. Until recently the only automatic control of electric parameters in submerged-arc furnaces has been electrode control with electrode current or electrode impendance as controlled variables. Elkem Research and Development Centre has delivered this kind of control for a long time, both stand- alone controllers and control algorithms incorporated in an integrated computer control system. In recent years we have noticed increasing interest in more sophisticated electric control. Results both from pilot-plant experiments and from production furnaces show that proper electric conditions in the furnace are more important to the furnace operation than was assumed earlier. Optimal electric conditions lead to lower power consumption per ton of metal and allow use of cheaper raw materials Besides, power contracts and the market situation lead to more frequent change of load on the furnaces. Therefore it is important to vary the load in a way that allows proper electric conditions to be maintained. Based on this renewed interest in electric control, Elkem Research and Development Centre has carried out a project, starting with analysis of existing electric instrumentation and control algorithms for electrode control, and ending up with an integrated electric control strategy including power-demand control as shown in Figure 1. In this paper we will give a resume of this work and present a new integrated control strategy put into operation for the first time in June 1983. [ ]

FOR many years the cost of making pig iron and steel in the Birmingham district has been about the lowest in the United States. The close proximity of the important raw materials such as coal, iron ore, limestone, and the large available scrap supply made it possible to assemble all of the important ingredients necessary for steel-making with only nominal costs for transportation. Both iron ore and coal were being mined in this district at one time for about $1 per ton from underground operations. At that time mining wages were low everywhere and the labor rate in the South was considerably below that of other mining districts. This situation persisted until the emergence of labor unions as an economic and political force, emigation of southern labor to northern plants, and continued growth of industry in the South in the years following the depression of 1932. Since that time union organizing of miners and steel workers throughout the nation has increased labor costs in mining and steelmaking. This influence has been felt particularly in underground mining operations since the proportion of labor cost to total cost is still high. The previous advantage in basic labor rate in the South has been almost entirely eliminated by the equalization of labor rates in basic industries by national unions.

PREVIOUS investigations 1,2 of Fe3P described by pearson3 and schubert4 show that Fe3P has a bct unit cell having four Fe3P tetrahedra centered around each lattice point. The space group is 14, No. 82, and all atoms occupy general positions 8(g). The cell dimensions3 are: a = 9.090, c = 4.446 kX, with an axial ratio of c/o = 0.4891. We have measured the lattice parameters of Fe3P, using a Fe as an internal temperature standard, at 23°, 414°, and 678°C and computed the thermal expansion over this temperature range. The Fe,P was prepared by melting under vacuum (after flushing with argon) a commercially pure iron and "ferrophosphor" in a high-frequency induction furnace. Part of the ingot was crushed for X-ray examination and for chemical analysis. X-ray diffraction and light microscopy indicated iron phosphide (Fe3P) present as the major constituent and a small amount (about 5 pct) of a Fe. Chemical analysis showed 0.05 wt pct Si, 0.008 wt pct N, 0.018 wt pet C, and less than 0.02 wt pct each of other metallic elements. X-ray diffraction powder patterns were obtained from a mixture of iron and Fe3P sealed in an evacuated quartz capsule using a Unicam high-temperature

The following tables show the analyses of ores from nearly all of the mines which will produce over 10,000 tons of ore each during the season of 1890. There are many small mines now in the course of development, some of which may become large producers. Many of the mines produce several different grades of ore, but the analyses given in the tables are fair averages of ore such as the respective mines can deliver. Most of these analyses were obtained from the agents of the respective ores, and are averages of the season of 1889. One can state positively that over 75 per cent. of all the iron-ores of the Lake Superior district will average over 60 per cent. of metallic iron. During the past 34 years this region has produced about 48,137,421 tons of ore, the different districts contributing about as follows: Marquette District,. 29,754,057 Menominee " .10,415,859 Gogebic " . 6,622,194 Vermilion " . 2,342,991 Miscellaneous,. .. .. 2,320 In the year 1889, the product of all the districts was nearly &apos;1,300,000 tons. The product of the entire region for the season of 1890 may exceed 9,000,000 tons. This large amount of ore is shipped to the lower lake ports, from Escanaba, Marquette, Two Harbors and Gladstone.

Report of Secretary TO THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF MINING AND METALLURGICAL ENGINEERS Gentlemen -I herewith present a report of some of the more important activities of the Institute for the year of 1922. The outstanding feature of the year is the optimism felt by our members despite the continued depression in the mining industry. January 1, 1921, found many of our members out of employment or drifting into other industries to tide them over the depression; but almost universally the feeling has been that this was but a temporary condition and that sooner or later the necessary production of raw materials would enable these members to return to their former activities and renew their participation in Institute affairs As the year passed conditions improved and, before it ended, many had found employment in their previous occupations. Bearing in mind that this depression has been very real, we have reason to be well satisfied with the work that the Institute has been able to do The loss of members through inability to pay dues has been large, and income has been correspondingly reduced, but it proved to be materially in excess of that anticipated early in the year, so that a substantial and unanticipated balance was carried forward toward the activities of 1923.

THREE mills are now operated by the Consolidated Mining & Smelting Co. of Canada, Ltd. : (1) The Sullivan Concentrator, Chapman Camp, B. C. (near Kimberley, B. C.), (2) the St. Eugene Concentrator, Moyie, B. C., and (3) the Tadanac (Customs) Concentrator, Trail, B. C. Differential flotation is the only concentration method employed in all three I plants. Tables are used for pilot work only. Values in all ores treated are as minerals of some or all of the metals -lead, zinc, gold or silver. Occasional customs ores contain small amounts of copper. Sulfide iron content of ores treated varies from a [ ] low figure in some ores to 38 per cent. iron in Sullivan ore. Gangue minerals vary considerably. A few customs ores are somewhat oxidized and as a result present difficulties. Flotation equipment and control are similar in the three mills, and the flow sheets at the St. Eugene and Tadanac mills, while much simpler, are modeled after that of the Sullivan Concentrator. In this paper I will not detail treatment nor equipment in any of our plants but will describe special features in, or in connection with, all of them. I will then deal with flotation reagents, describing our use of each of them, particularly where differing from general practice. I will conclude with comments on special subjects related to differential flotation.

THAT geology and mining should stand in close and mutually helpful relationship was recognized in the United States at an early period, but it is not possible to set a precise date at which the study of ore deposits became a thoroughly reputable and important branch of geological science. As early as 1850, appeared the first ,part of Foster and Whitney&apos;s report1 on the Lake Superior region, devoted mainly to the copper-bearing areas, followed, in the succeeding year, by the second part,2 on the iron lands. This appears to have been the first comprehensive report on what might, at that time at least, be called "western" ore deposits to be prepared and published under the auspices of the Federal government. An outgrowth from this work was Whitney&apos;s Metallic Wealth of the United States,3 which appeared in 1854. It was the earliest general work on the ore deposits of the country, and remained a standard reference book for marly forty years. From 1853 on, various parties were sent out by the War Department to explore routes for proposed railways and wagon roads from the Mississippi Valley to the Pacific Coast. Geologists were attached to most of these parties, but their work was mainly of broad reconnaissance character, little attention being paid to ore deposits. Although the

Gold was discovered at the Haile mine in Lancaster County, South Carolina, in 1827 or 1828, and since that time the mine has been worked intermittently by both open-pit and underground methods until its forced closure in 1942 by World War II. Production figures are incomplete, especially for the early years, but the total gold produced is estimated to have been greater than 200,000 oz. Thus, the Haile mine has been the most productive gold mine in the eastern United States. The upper, residually enriched ores were relatively rich, but the bulk of the production has come from the mining of lower grade ores. General Geology The Haile mine is located in late Precambrian or early Paleozoic rocks of the Carolina slate belt at the edge of the Atlantic Coastal Plain [(Fig. 1)]. The metamorphic grade is lower greenschist facies and the rocks have been folded into a sequence of northeast-trending isoclinal folds. The gold is associated with siliceous, pyritic, and kaolinized felsic pyroclastic and tuffaceous rocks in an interbedded volcanic and volcanoclastic sequence of felsic to mafic tuffaceous rocks and argillaceous sediments [(Fig. 2)]. The ore bodies occur in two northeast trending zones approximately 500 m apart; each zone is 30-70 m wide and 600 m or more in length, with possible extensions to the east beneath the Coastal Plain sediments. Mineralogy. Gold in the Haile mine is always associated with siliceous and/or pyritic ores. The gold occurs in at least three states: As native gold as originally deposited; as residual gold derived from the breakdown of pyrite; and as gold included in pyrite. Major associated minerals in addition to quartz and pyrite are kaolinite, sericite, and iron oxides. Minor molybdenite, arsenopyrite, pyrrhotite, copper sulfides, sphalerite, rutile, and topaz are also present. Petrology. The gold-bearing ore zones vary from highly siliceous rocks to pyritic massive sulfide lenses. This variation is most easily seen today along strike from the Haile pit to the Red Hill pit. Ore grade material still exposed in the wall of the Haile pit consists of a highly siliceous and very thinly bedded rock containing minor pyrite. Along strike, the character of the mineralization changes to pyritic massive sulfide lenses occurring interbedded with siliceous horizons at the Red Hill pit. The siliceous rocks vary from the thinly-bedded material as just described from the Haile pit to silicified fragmental-appearing rocks to totally recrystallized cherty rocks lacking any recognizable primary features. Scattered, apparently at random, throughout the very thinly-bedded and very fine-grained ore face of the Haile pit are seemingly anomalous silica-rich clasts or concretions up to 5 cm in diameter which will be discussed later in this paper. Alteration. One of the most striking features of the Haile deposit is the alteration mineral assemblage which is intimately associated with the siliceous and pyritic ores. This altered material has been intersected in drill core at depths greatly exceeding the modern weathering profile and is, therefore, of hydrothermal origin rather than from supergene processes. This "sericite," actually a fine-grained mixture of sericite, kaolinite, and quartz, can be shown to stratigraphically underlie the gold- quartz-pyrite zone, and is well exposed in the open pit just southeast of the Haile and Bumalo pits. Relict textures indicate that this highly altered material was originally a felsic ash flow. Other similar alteration zones have been found in outcrop and drill core underlying the remaining ore bodies. Thus each of the mineralized zones consists of two parts: A siliceous and/or pyritic gold-bearing ore zone which is stratigraphically underlain by a zone of high alumina minerals, in this case sericite and kaolinite along with variable amounts of quartz. A green chrome mica, presumably fuchsite, is present in trace amounts in the high alumina zone. Genesis An adequate model to explain the origin and distribution of the gold deposits in the Carolina slate belt is presently lacking. Worthington and Kiff1 suggested a volcanogenic origin for certain gold deposits in the North Carolina slate belt from the waning exhalations of felsic volcanic piles. They also pointed out that such an origin has similarities to many epithermal precious metal deposits located in more recent volcanic piles in the western United States. A further key to the understanding of the genesis of the gold mineralization at the Haile mine is the close association of the mineralization in siliceous and sulfidic horizons to the genetically related and stratigraphically underlying high alumina alteration. Such high-alumina alteration is common around felsic volcanic centers in the Carolina slate belt and the mineralogy as seen today consists of some combination of kaolinite, sericite, pyrophyllite, kyanite, andalusite or sillimanite depending on the local prevailing grade of metamorphism. Accompanying the high-alumina alteration are large quantities of pyrite and iron-oxide minerals as well as characteristic minor accessory minerals often including base metal sulfides, fluorine-bearing minerals (topaz, fluorite, apatite), titanium-bearing minerals (ilmenite, rutile),

THE announcement of this World Conference on Mineral Resources briefly traced the development of the metals industries over the past 75 years The various phases were characterized as iron and steel for the railroad era, then copper and the electrical age, through alloy steels to the age of light metals in World War II, ending with the curtain rising on the atomic age at the end of the war The interests of mining and metallurgical industries in the atomic age may perhaps be divided broadly into three - groups (1) production of the special materials required by atomic-energy installations and processes, (2) use of atomic power in the mining or refining of materials, (3) use of radioactive isotopes and radiation in metal and chemical processes both for laboratory study and in the production of materials for use in any field In the production of special materials, the mining and metallurgical, scientific and industrial groups have already contributed much to the start of the atomic age The mining, refining and fabrication of the basic uranium to a degree of purity and form suitable for production of plutonium in the Hanford Engineering Works is just one example. In accordance with the requirements of By-Law LX,- I beg leave to submit herewith the report of the Library Committee for the year 1916. The activities shown by the sale of the Institute&apos;s publications during the year are somewhat larger than last year, due principally to the increased sale of special editions on account of the larger sale of the Posepny and Emmons Volumes, owing to increased advertising and to the reduction in price of the Emmons Volume. The sales were distributed as follows: Sale of Transactions $3,237.07 Sale of Special Editions 1,722.50 Sale of Bulletins and Pamphlets 2,263.95 Total $7,223.52, The Institute library has now been merged with the libraries of the. other three Founder Societies and is known and administered as the Library of the United - Engineering Society. When this merger, was effected, a proviso was made that the books contained in the Institute library up to the date of the merger were still to be considered as the individual property of the Institute, and this arrangement applied also to the libraries of the other two Founder Societies. At the time that the American Society of Civil Engineers joined as a fourth Founder Society, they immediately turned over their entire library to the United Engineering Society, relinquishing all property rights in the books entirely.

Meeting of Oct. 23, 1914.-It was voted to take no action concerning the proposed amendments to Article VIII, Sections 2 and 3, but that they be sent to the membership, as provided by the Constitution, together with a statement of the arguments for and against the proposed changes. It was voted that the following proposed amendment, which had been unanimously approved at the annual meeting of the Institute on Feb. 18, 1914, be sent to the membership as provided by the Constitution, together with the approval of the Board of Directors of this change: Article III, Section 1, paragraph 3, sentences 2 and 3: substitute the following: "Any Member, Junior Member or Associate in arrears for two years shall be dropped from the rolls unless the time for payment is extended by the Directors. A Member so dropped may be reinstated by the Directors on paying the arrears of clues and other indebtedness with which he was charged on the books of the Institute it the time he was dropped. A Member or Associate thus reinstated shall receive the Transactions for the back year for which he pays." It was unanimously voted to extend the sincere thanks of the institute to Samuel A. Taylor, Chairman, and to each member of the several Committees of the Pittsburgh meeting, for the enjoyable and successful meeting which they brought about.

COMPOUNDS in the U-N system have received little attention since the work of Rundle, Baen-ziger, Wilson, and McDonald in 1948.&apos; They described the three nitrides UN2, U2,N2, and UN as the only phases in this system. The region between UN and U,N, was reported to consist of the two phases while the region between U,N, and UN, is a homogeneous solid solution in which the U,N3, structure transforms with increasing nitrogen content into the UN, structure. This report presents the results of an X-ray diffraction study of the phases present in the region of the diffusion gradient on uranium reacted with nitrogen at several temperatures between 500" and 915°C. Several samples of uranium used in U-N gas-metal reactions by Mallett and Gerds were available for X-ray diffraction study of phase composition through the diffusion gradient. X-ray diffraction data were obtained using filtered iron radiation at intervals through the diffusion layer of the several samples on filings or turnings at approximately 0.001 in. increments down to the base metal. Representative X-ray diffraction patterns from various layers through the case on uranium after nitriding at 850°C are shown in Fig. 1. These data show that three different phases are present in the

THIS paper gives the composition of the iron and slag at different stages in the "air-furnace" process of preparing "hard metal," or white cast-iron, for conversion into malleable cast-iron by annealing. The details of the process are given in an appendix. One of us had been trying for years to work some chemist of some of our malleable-iron works up to a degree of enthusiasm which would lead him to make such au investigation. It would have had the advantage of the greater familiarity with the conditions which one habitually on the spot must have. Failing in this, he made use of an opportunity which presented itself of taking samples here represented, with such fairness as the conditions permitted, holding firmly that a rough approximation to the truth is better than the complete lack of data, or that a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. We hope that this attempt may stimulate others effectively to duplicate this work, and thus correct or confirm it. Our results are shown in Table I. and graphically in Figs. 1 and 2. Discussion.-At the time when the first two samples were taken, the metal and slag were still too sluggish to permit fair sampling, and not until sample 6 were the conditions really favorable, because at the time of the fourth sample the metal was not fully melted, and even at the time of sample 5 it was still sluggish. Indeed, the slag was probably very heterogeneous throughout, because it took up silica and alumina rapidly from the bottom, and because it was so siliceous as to be sluggish at this relatively low temperature. This hetero-geneousness is exaggerated in the two samples of slag 8, apparently by the great viscosity due to its extraordinary acidity. Note that the manganous oxide of one sample is about two and

THIS account of a contrivance which has been found serviceable in practice may be of interest to engineers, and&apos; especially to those engaged in hydraulic mining. In that process, one feature which seems at first sight to possess little significance, is highly important in its effects, namely, the regular supply of water to the " giants." The chief condition of this regularity is an even flow in the pipe-line from the penstock to the nozzle. This, of course, requires that the penstock be kept full. Any considerable surplus of water, overflowing at the penstock, is a simple waste, unless it be otherwise utilized in the sluices. At all events, it does not affect the delivery of the nozzles. But a deficiency at the penstock may admit air into the pipe; and this may produce hydraulic recoil, injuring the line by incessant vibrations, giving rise to leaks, and even to blow-outs, and (when a partial vacuum exists at the time of the fracture the collapse of the pipe. An accident of this sort in our main pipe-line, occasioned partly by a settling of the ground and partly by the presence of air in the pipe, led to the employment of the device here described. The line referred to is made of 30-in. pipe, successively reduced to 18 and 15 in. in diameter, for the supply of two giants. By reason of the causes above mentioned, the 30-in. pipe burst more than 1,400 ft. from the penstock, and, despite the air-valve, the 30-in. pipe was collapsed to such a degree that one length of it, next to the penstock, was squeezed together and positively swallowed by the main pipe, through which it traveled for 750 ft., piercing through a short elbow on the way. This remarkable result was undoubtedly the effect of the vacuum suddenly produced when the pipe burst.
