INTRODUCTION Underground fires continue to be one of the most serious hazards to life and property in the mining industry. Although underground mines are analogous to high-rise buildings where persons are isolated from immediate escape or rescue, application of technology to locate and control fire hazards while still in their controllable state is slow to be implemented in underground mines. Even in large surface structures such as hotels, often only fire protection systems which meet minimal laws are implemented due to the high cost of adding extensive extinguishing systems, isolation barriers, alternate ventilation, escape routes and alarm systems. Incomplete and ineffective protection occasionally is evidenced where costs would not seem to be a factor, such as the $211 million MGM Grand Hotel fire November 21, 19801. Paramount in increasing fire safety and decreasing the threat of serious fire is early warning followed by proper decision analysis to perform the correct action. However, very complex fire situations can be produced in structures such as high-rise buildings and underground mines simply because of the distances between the numerous fire-potential locations and fire safe areas. Other complexities arise when normal activities occur that emit products of combustion signaling a fire condition to a sensitive fire/smoke sensor. For example, the operation of diesel equipment or the performance of regular blasting can produce combustion products that reach the sensitive alarm points of many sensors2. Smoke detectors for surface installations provide fire warning when occupants are at a distant location or when sleeping, thus greatly reducing injuries and property damage. However, when installed in the harsh environments of underground mines, fire and smoke detection equipment soon becomes inoperative, unreliable, or requires excessive maintenance. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has performed many studies and tests to improve fire and smoke protection for underground mine workers3. This paper describes several USBM safety programs which included in-mine testing with mine fire and smoke sensors, telemetry and instrumentation to develop recommendations for improving mine fire safety. It is hoped that the technology developed during these programs can be added to other programs to provide the mining industry with the necessary fire safety facts. By recognizing fire potentials and being provided with cost-effective, proven components that will perform reliably under the poor environmental conditions of mining, mine operators can provide protection for their working life and property equal to that which they provide for themselves and their families at home. The basis of this report is two USBM programs for fire protection in metal and nonmetal mines4,5 and one coal program6. The data was collected beginning in May 1974 and continuing through the present with underground tests of a South African fire system installed at Magma Mine in Superior, Arizona, and a computer-assisted, experimental system at Peabody Coal Mine in Pawnee, Illinois. The conduct of each program was as follows: • Define the problem and its magnitude in the industry • Develop concepts to solve or diminish the problem • Review available hardware or systems approaches to fit the concepts • Install and demonstrate the performance of a prototype system through fire tests in an operating mine. MINE FIRE FACTS Whether in coal or metal and nonmetal mines, the potential severity of fire hazard is directly related to location. As shown in Figure 1, fire in intake air at zones A, B, C or D can cause contamined air to route throughout the mine quickly if not detected, isolated or rerouted. Causes and location of former metal and nonmetal fires are represented in Table 1; the cause and location of fatalities and injuries is shown in Table 2. Coal-related fires and their impact on deaths and injuries are graphed in Figure 2; their locations are described in Table 37. Significantly the table shows that the hazard to personnel was three times greater for fires occurring in shaft or slope areas, and the percentage of deaths and injuries was four times that of other areas. Number of Persons Affected A 129-mine sample indicated that from 8 to 479 employees per shift work in underground metal and nonmetal mines, and that deeper mines have larger populations, as shown in Figure 3. Coal mining relates similar employment, and a 16-state sample of 670 mines employing at least 25 persons shows the distribution in Figure 4. Drift mines accounted for 58 percent of the sample but employ only 45 percent of the underground workers.

Examples are presented which show that the velocity~ amplitude, attenuation and apparent frequency of several acoustic waves can be recorded in the borehole. Examination of such recordings, termed "character" logs, indicates that the wave types observed include a refracted compressional wave and a wave which travels with formation shear velocity. Laboratory data are used to show that compressional and shear wave velocities are dependent on porosity, effective stress and lithology; but that the change in reciprocal velocity per unit change in porosity is larger for shear waves than for compressional waves. We, therefore, conclude that. the accuracy of porosity determinations can sometimes be improved by use of shear wave velocities, provided that the shear wave amplitudes are large enough to delineate the shear arrival from the preceding compressional arrival on the character log. Borehole data are presented which show that the difference between shear wave and compressional wave reciprocal velocities can be used to predict porosities. This is a refinement which may allow the prediction of porosities from single-receiver acoustic logs without introduction of errors from borehole fluid traveltimes. Laboratory and field data are presented to show that the relationship between compressional and shear wave velocities can be used to indicate lithology. An example is presented to show that fractures usually cause a greater reduction in borehole shear wave amplitudes than in compressional wave amplitudes, an effect which may offer a more reliable means of detecting fractures. The complexity of the borehole acoustic wave train can rake presently available cement bond logs highly sensitive to the gate and bias settings used. The character log offers a means to circumvent possible misinterpretations by recording all amplitudes, from which the interpreter can select the appropriate data for evaluating the cement bond. Character logs may also be used as a quality control for open-hole transit-time logs when existence of small compressional wave amplitudes interferes with the proper functioning of bias-controlled timing devices. Evaluation of the potential uses of character log data is not complete; but a character log presented in a form convenient for routine use would be a desirable addition to currently available logs. To summarize, possible applications for such a log in formation evaluation include the following (1) quality control of transit-time logs, (2) refinement of porosity predictions, (3) determination of lithology, (4) improvement of fracture detection and (5) improvement of cement bond evaluation. Suggestions are made regarding the requirements for a suficient but practical character log for routine use. INTRODUCTION Acoustic logs have become a widely used porosity tool in formation evaluation. In addition, there is a growing application of acoustic logs in cement bond evaluation and fracture detection. These applications have mainly involved the use of logs of first-arrival transit times and amplitudes and have not included detailed studies of the complete signal. The purpose of this paper is to show that significant benefits in formation evaluation can be gained by a more complete use of the acoustic wave train generated in the borehole by an acoustic logging tool. We hope that this discussion will also stimulate further development of logs suitable for routine use so that these benefits may be realized. Examples of acoustic wave train logs, termed "character" logs, are presented to show that several identifiable acoustic waves are present in the borehole. The measurable characteristics of these acoustic waves and some of their relations to formation properties of interest are also discussed. The more obvious potential uses of character logs are listed, and some suggestions are made regarding the requirements for a sufficient but practical character log for routine use. CHARACTER LOGS Some 10 years ago, Vogel' and Summers and Broding' noted that the signals received uphole from an acoustic logging tool located in a borehole had a number of interesting characteristics. The logging tool consisted of two or more pressure transducers spaced on an acoustically insulated body (Fig. la). One of the pressure transducers was used as a transmitter to generate pressure waves in the borehole fluid. The other transducer served as a receiver to detect any pressure waves reaching it in the borehole. The receiver then converted these pressure waves to electrical signals which were transmitted to the surface and displayed on an oscilloscope as a record of time vs receiver-signal amplitude. This paper describes the development of u computer program to calculate changes that occur in the length of tubular goods due to temperature and pressure changes during stimulation operations. Due to the numerous variables involved and the uncertainty of all static and dynamic conditions that could exist, it becomes a staggering task for individuals charged with completions to perform the necessary mathematical calculations. The computer program permits advance calculations for several sets of conditions. INTRODUCTION In the Delaware basin of West Texas alone, 50 wells were contracted or drilled to 15,000 ft or deeper in 1965. Deep well activity is continuing in this and other areas on an expanding scale. Many of these deep wells require extensive stimulation for successful commercial production, and during these operations, pressures and temperatures are encountered that have a pronounced effect on the length of tubular goods. This length change during a large-volume, high-pressure stimulation treatment utilizing fluids considerably cooler than bottom-hole temperature can be of such a magnitude that permanent damage to casing and tubing will result unless mechanical design, pressures and fluid temperatures are evaluated and controlled. These pressure and temperature effects can be calculated. However, the process lends itself well to computer solutions because of the mathematical nature of the problem and the calculating hours involved in arriving at an answer. The engineering-hour demand becomes more severe as tapered strings are involved. On initial treatments on a given well, surface pressure and injection rate conditions are unknown, and offset well conditions have not proven to be a reliable method for making predictions. For these reasons, it has become rather standard procedure for operators to compensate for these uncertainties by placing unnecessary pressure and fluid temperature restrictions on stimulation design. On a number of occasions treating fluids have been preheated to as much as 160F as a means of compensating for thermal contmction resulting from pumping cool fluids. The maintenance of packer seals has been treated by Lubinski, Althouse and Logan',' and the problem of therma1 effects on pipe has been explored by Ramey." These works were expanded and the results made applicable to everyday oilfield terminology before submitting them to computer programming. The pressure and temperature effects on tubing movement previously mentioned occur simultaneously as fluid moves through the pipe. The pressure changes, for purposes of explanation, are categorized here as to the various effects these pressures have on a tubing string. These divisions are (1) the piston-like results of forces acting on horizontal surfaces exposed to pressure, (2) swelling or ballooning of the tubing along its entire length due to the forces of pressure acting against the tubing walls, (3) the elongation of tubing due to frictional drag and (4) corkscrewing of the pipe due to internal pressure. Thermal changes are also of great importance, as their results may be more significant than any of the pressure effects. Steel is an excellent conductor of heat and the earth is a relatively poor conductor. It has been calculated that pipe temperatures at depths of more than 20,000 ft approach within as little as 25" the temperfature of the surface fluid after pumping for 2 hours, or a drop in temperature in some treatments of more than 220F. The equations presented in this paper were developed for computer programming and simplicity of input information; therefore, numerical constants such as Young's modulus for steel (28 X 10\ si), the coefficient of thermal expansion of steel (6.9 X 10."IF) and Poisson's ratio for steel (0.3) are included with unit conversion factors. The moment of inertia of tubing cross-sectional area with respect to its diameter was changed to a constant times (D' — d') where D is outer diameter and d is inner diameter. Units in the equations are length in feet, diameter in inches, density in pounds per gallon, pressure in psi, rate in barrels per minute and time in hours. PISTON-LIKE REACTIONS A change in tubing internal dimensions and the exposure of other horizontal surfaces to different pressures on the inside and outside of the tubing result in a reaction much like a piston under pressure. Such is the case when the internal diameter changes in a combination string of pipe, when seals of a slick joint assembly are subject to pressure and in the end effects of a tubing string. Brown, Jr.—The authors have divided the effects of recovery on the true stress-true strain curve into two types; metarecovery, which effects only the first part of the curve or the yield strength, and orthorecovery, which effects the flow stress at any strain. Both of these are said to be true recovery effects, involve no recrystallization, and are explained by the removal of two different types of imperfections caused by work hardening. However, there seems to be some question as to whether the data are sufficiently conclusive to exclude, as an explanation of the authors' results, a mechanism based on the relief of residual stresses between the grains or slip bands and recrystallization. It appears that metarecovery could be interpreted in the same fashion as a customary interpretation of the Bausch-inger effect. The balanced system of internal stresses which exists between grains in a strained specimen due to varying orientation and, hence, yield strengths, of the different grains is responsible for a reduced yield strength in compression following pre-tension, and, similarly, for an elevated yield strength in tension following pre-tension. If the specimen is now heated so that the internal stresses are relieved by creep, then the yield strength in tension following tension will have been reduced and in compression following tension will have been raised. There seems to be a very strong case for the lack of recrystallization in the aluminum investigated by the authors, if one defines recrystallization as the presence of visually detectable new grains or accepts the X-ray evidence as conclusive. One must remember, however, that the appearance of spots on the back-reflection X-ray patterns cannot be taken as the time when recrystallization first started. The areas of recrystallized strain-free material must first have grown to a size large enough to give distinct spots on the patterns and this may take some time. Averbachl7 in an investigation of brass has shown that recrystallization can be detected by extinction measurements at temperatures lower than those based on hardness or X-ray line width determinations. It can be seen from fig. 10 that the rate of recrystallization is extremely low over a considerable time period at the onset of the process. Observations on the rate at which small amounts of recrystallization effect the flow stress would have given further insight as to whether undetectably small amounts of recrystallization might have been responsible for orthorecovery. Also, the question arises as to whether the effects observed in fig. 6 for various times and temperatures could not have been obtained if the time at 212°F were sufficiently long. In addition, the argument that the curve in fig. 10 is not sigmoidal seems weak in view of the scattering of the points. It is conceivable that an accurate determination of the curve for the first 100 hr would exhibit a relationship other than the one drawn. There is one point we would like to raise about the condition of the starting material. The authors annealed their material at 750°F for 15 min to remove the effects of any previous work hardening or machining strains. Reference to the work by Anderson and Mehl shows that this treatment may not have completely recrystallized the aluminum, so that the starting material may have had some strained areas. Higher temperatures or longer times may have been required to remove the effects of any small strains. We would like to mention some results of tests being conducted at the Lewis laboratory of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics in an investigation of the Bauschinger effect in relation to fatigue. Tests were performed on annealed electrolytic copper and several annealed brasses. Specimens were pre-strained 1 pct in tension and then tested in compression or tension with and without intermediate stress-relieving annealing treatments at 500°F for various times. Specimens heated at 500°F for 10 1/2 hr showed an elevation of the flow curve in compression and an approximately equal lowering of the flow curve in tension when compared with the curves for the un-heat treated specimens. After approximately 0.8 pct strain, all flow stresses coincided and were equal to the flow stress of the virgin material at this strain. This behavior is consistent with the metarecovery observed for aluminum by the authors and for which a residual stress model can be used. On the other hand, increas-

THE important literature concerning zirconium in magnesium-base alloys is predominantly contained in patent references. Sauerwald, Eisenreich, and Holub1-4 discovered the profound grain-refining influence of small amounts of zirconium on cast magnesium and the attendant increases in strength, and ductility. They extended their work to reveal that limited amounts of certain other elements, including zinc, could be added for further improvement in strength and hardness. British. Patent 5111376 relates to the parent discoveries of Sauerwald, Eisen¬reich, and Holub. All of these references deal primarily with casting characteristics and properties in the cast state. Minor mention is made of desirable tensile strength, ductility, and toughness of wrought Mg-Zr alloys* modified by one or more additional elements. No extensive reference in the literature" has been found to the particular characteristics of wrought Mg-Zn-Zr alloys, with which the present paper is concerned. - The work to be discussed represents essentially an extrusion study of the Mg-Zn-Zr alloys and indicates that this system is highly interesting in the wrought state both academically and commercially. Accordingly, an important aim of this paper is to describe the hot-workability, tension and compression properties, metal¬lography, and toughness of these alloys. Compositional variations are limited to the ranges o to 7 per cent Zn and o to I per cent Zr. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Alloying and Casting Alloying ingredients were cell mag¬nesium, commercial zinc (intermediate grade), and a chloride salt containing approximately 50 per cent ZrCl2 and 50 per cent alkali chlorides. This salt is produced by Titanium Alloy Manu¬facturing Company. Melting, alloying, and pouring procedure essentially followed the crucible process as described by Nelson.6 The magnesium was melted using Dow No. 310 flux, and the temperature raised to 1350° to 1400°F for the alloying operations. After alloying of the zinc, the zirconium containing salt was added in small portions with vigorous stirring. This is an adaptation of the method described in British Patent 533264.7 The alloying efficiency of zir¬conium was approximately 30 per cent. During the alloying of zirconium, fluorspar was added in amount required as a flux¬inspissating agent. Next the melt was refined with Dow No. 310 flux and held quietly for 15 min. SOME 40 miles east of Tampa is the center of the Florida pebble phosphate deposits. These are of Pliocene age and consist of several members of the Bone Valley formation.1 Physically the phosphate-bearing formation, locally called the "matrix," varies in thickness from nothing to about 25 ft., usually averages 10 ft., and consists mainly of clay, quartz and phosphate pebble, the latter particles varying in size from colloidal to one inch diameter. The pebbles range in color from dark gray, through white, to cream, and in hardness from that which must be broken with a hammer to that which can be scratched with the fingernail. They assay from 66 to 80 per cent bone phosphate of lime (called "B.P.L." in the trade) or tricalcium phosphate (Ca3P20s) and are secondary apatites. They form from 15 to 50 per cent by weight of the matrix, Over the matrix lies a varying thickness (5 to 40 ft.) of overburden composed of quartz and clay. Briefly, mining consists of two operations2 in open pits about 200 ft. wide by ½ mile or more in length. In the first step overburden is removed by large electric draglines at the rate of about 700 cu. yd. per hour. This is followed closely by hydraulic mining of the matrix at the rate of about 300 cu. yd. per hour. This matrix yardage is moved from an improvised sump in the floor of the pit to an ore-dressing plant, some-times a mile distant, by one, two or three "pit-cars" (pumping units) working on a 12-in. pipe line called the "rock line" to distinguish it from the high-pressure water line feeding the hydraulic giants, which is known as the "hydraulic line." This 700 yd. of overburden and 300 yd. of matrix-1000 yd. in all-amounts to about 1500 tons of material moved each hour. The over-burden is dumped into the mined-out pit alongside the pit being mined. The matrix moves to the ore-dressing plant at the rate of about 7 ½ long tons in 4000 gal. of water per minute-a ratio of approximately one to two by weight, or one to six by volume. This constitutes the "mill heads," but in the pebble district it is called the "matrix."

The problem of increasing output and decreasing percentage of rejections is a vital one in the manufacture of steel of any kind. The making of basic open-hearth steel for use in rolled steel wheels, tires for locomotive and car wheels, and forgings of various kinds, is a highly specialized industry. The increase in weight of railway rolling stock of all kinds, and the high speed that the public demands of transportation facilities, make it imperative that steel for use in this class of material shall be of the highest quality obtainable. During the past few years it has been the writer's good fortune to have opportunity to study the defects in basic open-hearth steel, and also the results obtained by various changes in open-hearth practice, on such defects. The opportunity for study and the details available are rarely found in the manufacture of steel of any kind. It seems reasonable to assume that many of the results determined here can be applied to the production of steel of other types with a decided improvement in quality, a decrease in the percentage of rejections and an increase in output. All of the material described is basic open-hearth steel with the following range of analysis: carbon, 0.50 to 0.85 per cent.; phosphorus and sulfur, 0.04 max.; silicon, 0.15 to 0.35; manganese, 0.50 to 0.75. All of this material is bottom-cast, therefore tapping and pouring temperatures are higher than in top-cast production. Ingots used in this type of work are of standard length with varying diameters. The ingot is known as duodecagonal, or twelve-sided. The standard body length is 88 in. and the hot top length, 14 in. Fig. 1 shows a typical ingot of this type. The diameter varies from 13 to 30 in. Ingots for special forgings, which cannot be made in molds of standard size, are made in molds of various sizes and designs. These ingots are sliced cold, into blocks of various lengths, depending upon the weight of the forging to be made. Fig. 2 shows the ingot after coming from the slicing lathe. Jusf sufficient metal remains between blocks to hold the ingot in one piece while it is being removed from the lathe; then steel wedges are inserted between the blocks and the blocks are broken apart. The paper describes the use of the Electric Pilot in the Permian Basin for making permeability surveys of wells and for the selective acidization of wells. A general summary of the information obtained from the many permeability surveys run in this area is given, and the possible application of this information to reservoir control problems is discussed. The application of the Electric Pilot on specific wells, involving well completion, acidizing and workover operations is also included. Introduction The Electric pilot is a comparatively new tool in oil-producing areas. From the beginning, the possibilities of this new service caught the imagination of many of the oil operators and acidizing engineers. Through the continued and ever increasing use of the pilot during the past year, and the close cooperation of the oil operators who have used this service, the efficiency and utility of the Electric Pilot service has been increased to a point where it is now a well established and recognized service. There are two major uses for the Electric Pilot: (I) permeability survey; (2) selective acid treatments. Permeability surveys are made to determine the thickness of the various permeable sections at the borehole, the vertical position of these zones at the bore hole, and the relative capacities of the various zones. Nomenclature Data obtained from the permeability survey are used to calculate three different indexes that pertain to the volume of fluid injected into the various permeable zones. A nomenclature for these various indexes has been set up, which correspond with the various productivity indexes, except that they are a measure of injected fluid rather than produced fluid. The nomenclature and definition of the indexes used in connection with a permeability survey by the Electric Pilot are as follows: 1. Capacity.—The volume of water injected into an individual permeable zone, in gallons Per minute. 2. Capacity Index.—The volume of water injected into an individual permeable Zone, in gallons Per minute Per pound Per Square inch differential Pressure. 3. Specific Capacity Index.—The volume of water injected into an individual permable zone in gallons Per minute Per pound per square inch differential per foot of thickness of the zone at the borehole. Capacity is the most generally used index, and for planning initial acidizing procedures and most workover jobs it is sufficient. For comparing permeability surveys on the same well before and after

The reduction of a metal in an aqueous solution may be defined in terms of its source of electrons. In electrolytic reduction electrons flow as a result of applied voltages. In other systems electron sources are reducing gases or metals of lower electron affinity. In the latter two cases it is increasingly evident that reduction is electro-chemical in nature in that electrons flow through one or more conducting phases even though the discharge reactions may not be rate controlling. Electrode processes impmtant in reduction and metal deposition are reviewed and extended to contact reduction by precipitation (cementation) on mme electropositive metals. Contact reduc- tion Processes are ancient in origin and represent techniques which have had successful application for hundreds of years. In spite of this, little has been understood in terms of the dynamic properties of such systems or of important side reactions. In recent years an increasing amount of laboratory work has been carried out on contact reduction and an attempt is made here to summarize the important findings. Undoubtedly the interest aroused recently may be attributed to improved reactor design which has demonstrated on a commercial basis accelerated metal recovery by taking advantage of important kinetic and chemical parameters. of gold cyanide (Au(CN)-), respectively. The most common method for the reduction of ions in solution is by electrolysis. The impure metal is made the anode and the ions are reduced at the cathode. Leach liquors containing reducible ions may similarly be reduced electrolytically using an inert anode. The latter process is referred to as electrowinning. In recent years hydrogen has been used successfully as a gaseous re-Metallurgical Society of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers (AIME). He was also a member of the Executive Board of the Metallurgical Society (AIME). In 1957 Dr. WADSWORTH was given the AlME Best Paper Award as coauthor of a paper on the roasting of sphalerite. On July 1, 1968 Dr. WADS-WORTH started an 24 month assignment in the Philippine Islands to assist in the development of graduate metallurgical engineering at the University of the Philippines. In addition to graduate teaching and curriculum development he will establish research programs to develop extraction processes for metals production in the islands. Raw bituminous coal has been in general use as a blast-furnace fuel in Scotland for the last century, and although its use has now been largely abandoned and it has been replaced by coke in the majority of the few furnaces which are at present in blast in this country, coal-smelted pig iron is not yet a thing of the past; it is still being produced and marketed in competition with the more cheaply smelted product of the coke-fired furnace. Various factors have influenced this change in practice; the once plentiful deposits of coal of a suitable nature for the blast furnace are now not so easily obtainable; native blackband and clayband ironstones which are easily smelted in the coal-fired blast furnace, although still far from being exhausted, are not available except at a cost that is somewhat higher than that of imported ores, making them unattractive to the ironmaster that is compelled by circumstances to smelt his iron at the lowest possible cost. Within the last 15 years overproduction of synthetic nitrogen has led to progressive reductions in the price of sulphate of ammonia, the recovery of which together with the other by-products before that time materially assisted in reducing the working costs of the coal-fired furnace. Now the sale of the by-products recovered yields a diminished profit. When the cost of the product is the only consideration the small, s1ow-smelting, coal-fired blast furnace cannot compare with its large, modern, coke-fired competitor. Other considerations do not by any means all support the same side of the argument. WITHIN the last three years, aerial mapping has made wonderful progress. Its three sources of development in North America may be enumerated as follows: (1) The work of the U. S. Army Air. Service and Corps of Engineers at the McCook Experimental Field, Dayton, Ohio. This is generally regarded as the backbone of this class of endeavor in the United States. (2) In Canada, a great deal has been accomplished in a practical way by methods that have not even been tried out in the United States. Under the leadership of the late Doctor Deville, the Dominion Land Surveyors have turned out reconnaissance maps of large areas at very, small cost. (3) Private capital has contributed a great deal toward development of aerial mapping in a practical way in the United States. Prominent in this regard stands the Fairchild Aerial Surveys, Inc. which has spent large sums in research and development work, especially in the construction of aerial cameras. Its camera is, at present, the official camera of the U. S. Army and Navy Air Services, also, of the Canadian and Brazilian governments. Aerial photographic surveying is a flexible process and adapted to a variety of uses. To date, it has proved. of direct practical value for engineering projects such as reservoir and power transmission surveys, railroad location, drainage, harbor front studies; also, for many commercial purposes, tax assessment, city planning, forest surveys, and lawsuits. In a few instances, aerial photographs have been used successfully by geologists as base maps on which to record field observations, thereby dispensing with pacing and compass surveys. There is reason to believe that, eventually, the aerial map will find wide application in the work of geologists. The reason for advancing this opinion is that aerial maps have, in other fields, proved more complete as regards detail than maps made by standard processes of surveying and drafting, and often are more accurate than the latter. At the present time, five distinct uses are being made of aerial photographs: There is the "oblique" photograph taken at an angle with the horizon; it is used extensively for illustrations in newspapers, magazines, and advertisements. Also, for reconnaissance purposes, it has been found of great practical value. For illustrating reports of engineers and geologists, it offers many obvious advantages. In the Canadian Surveys, maps have been compiled from oblique photographs.

The standard free energies of formation of the lowest stable sulfides of chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten in equilibrium with the corresponding metal hazle been determined by reacting the sulfide and metal with H2(g)/H2S(g) mixtures. The reaction is A method for estimating the standard ~nolav entropies and standard entropies of formation at 298°K of the sul-fides of refractory metals is presented. The standard free energies of formation of the lowest sulfides of the metals in group VIa of the periodic table are probably best determined with the reaction* is known with greater accuracy than is that property for any other sulfur-bearing compound or solution which might serve as a reference phase to establish the chemical potential of sulfur for the essential re- However, there still remain significant problems to the use of Reaction [I] in studying these sulfides. First, the equilibrium gas ratios (Ph2S/PH2) are very small, and with the most stable sulfides in the series the ratios tend to be at the limit of the range for precise chemical analysis (10-4); and second, the reaction rate for the formation or reduction of these sulfides appears to be relatively slow. A primary reason for the latter problem is that the gas phase near the equilibrium concentration has very little capacity for transport of sulfur. It is to be noted that the thermo-dynamic properties obtained from the experimental results by Eq. [I] apply for 1 g-atom of sulfur in the metal-saturated compound even though the exact composition of the compound has not been determined. The work reported here is a study of the standard free energies of formation of the lowest sulfides of chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten, and of copper, by Reaction [I]. In planning the experimental program, it was decided that the technique that has been used previously3"' could be used with modification and that an improved analytical method was needed for determining H2S in the gas phase. Isothermal sections of the pseudo-ternary carbide systems TiC-VC-ZrC, TaC-VC-ZrC, and NbC-VC-ZrC have been examined. The sections contain an inverted U shaped two-phase field whose maximum extent is 77 molecular pct for Tic, 64 pct for TaC, and 51 pct for NbC. lsoparametric lines were determined which show the curvature of the single-phase field and the direction of tie lines in the two-phase field. It was not possible to show any relationship between atom size and the extent of the two-phase field. REVIOUS work' on the solubility relationship of several pairs of refractory cubic monocarbides from the group Tic, ZrC, VC, NbC, and TaC has shown that, with the exception of the system VC-ZrC, they all form continuous series of solid solutions. It was demonstrated that the limited solubility in the case of VC-ZrC system was primarily a question of the size factor, the size difference between vanadium and zirconium being greater than the limiting value of about 15 pet. It is interesting to consider the results of combining these isomorphous carbides in groups of three and to determine the isothermal section of the pseudo-ternary diagram at, for instance, 2000°C, a temperature that will assure an equilibrium structure in a reasonable length of time. In the ternary systems where the three pairs form complete solid solution series, it is probable that the isothermal ternary section would be a single- phase field, although this is not necessarily the case. However, if one pair of carbides has a very limited solubility, then there must be a two-phase field of some extent, and it is the purpose of the present work to examine the extension of this field and to determine if it can be related to the nature of the third carbide. This condition is fulfilled if the VC-ZrC pair, which has only limited solubility, is combined with Tic, TaC, or NbC. The relative sizes of the metal atoms undoubtedly play a role in the extent of the single-phase field, and the values obtained from the pure carbides, assuming close-packing between metal and carbon atoms and a carbon atom diameter of 1.54A, are

THE following paper is intended to be suggestive only, and to open the way for discussion and further observation. Its preparation was requested only two days before the time limit set for the submission of the papers comprising this symposium. Thus no time existed for detailed studies so it is largely a memorandum of such facts as have come incidentally to the notice of the writer in the study of coal in the field. The field study of sulfur in coal has received very little special attention or description from coal students. The presence of sulfur concretions is noted in hundreds of descriptions, and certain benches of a coal bed may be described as "sulfury" or the presence and position of sulfur bands may be noted in coal sections in connection with sampling. It may be accepted that some sulfur is present in all coal. The amount varies greatly in different regions, in different beds, and in the same bed in different areas. The anthracite of Rhode Island comes the nearest of any coal known to the writer of being free from sulfur, several analyses of that coal showing less than 0.1 per cent. Subbituminous coals in Colorado in a few places have close to 0.2 per cent. of sulfur on the dry-coal basis and in other states subbituminous coals approach this lower limit. Bituminous coals seldom run under 0.4 per cent. of sulfur on the dry basis, though in a few places dry bituminous coals in Colorado and Washington have between 0.3 and 0.4 per cent. The better known bituminous coals have almost everywhere over 0.4 per cent. The best of the Pocahontas and New River coals run close to 0.4 per cent., but there is very little commercial coal in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, or the other states that runs under 0.5 per cent. on the dry basis. From these minimum figures, the amount will range up to 5 or 6 per cent. or higher if visible sulfur is not excluded. It must be remembered that the usual -analysis of a coal bed is not intended to give the total proportion of sulfur in the bed but the amount in the coal after the removal of the more obvious and larger sulfur masses.

The electrolytic zinc plant of the Sullivan Mining Co. is in Government Gulch, at Silver King, Shoshone County, Idaho, in the Coeur d'Alene mining district, about one mile from the Bunker Hill smelter and about three miles from Kellogg. The Sullivan Mining Co., which owns both the zinc plant and the Star mine, is itself owned jointly by the Bunker Hill & Sullivan Mining & Concentrating Co, and the Hecla Mining Company. The Tainton high-density, high-acid process is used at this plant, therefore some parts of its flowsheet differ markedly from those of electrolytic plants using the low-density process. While it is a custom plant and has treated a variety of zinc concentrates originating from various sources in a number of states, it has obtained its main supply of zinc concentrates chiefly from the zinc-bearing ores of the Coeur d'A1ene mining district, of which the principal important sources have been the Bunker Hill and Star mines. Thus the main feed has been zinc concentrates obtained from complex lead-zinc-silver ores. For the year of 1935 the concentrates had the following composition: water, 9.5 per cent; Zn, 50.6; Pb, 3.3; Fe, 9.4; S, 31.0; Cu, 0.2; insoluble, 2.9. Flowsheet The concentrates are delivered to the plant in railroad cars, which discharge into storage bins directly under the track. Bottom-dump cars are dropped directly into the bins while a slip scraper, pulled by an air tugger hoist, is used to empty box cars. There are five storage bins for concentrates, each of approximately 300 tons capacity. At the bottom of each bin there are individual belt feeders that discharge onto a common conveyor belt, which in turn discharges to another belt that carries the concentrate onto a weightometer belt for weighing. Immediately after the weighing, the crushed oversize return from the roasters is added to the load on the belt and then the ground-up sweepings, lumps and roaster cleanings. An electromagnet at the end of this conveyor removes tramp iron from the feed. The belt discharges to a set of 30 by 12-in. rolls, which break up lumps or frozen chunks of concentrate, etc. Beneath the rolls there is a screw conveyor, which conveys the roll discharge to a

THE chemical and physical properties of slag systems are of special interest to metallurgists, for nearly all metals are in contact with molten slags during the primary reduction from their ores and then during the subsequent refining and alloying processes that determine their ultimate use, These processes are carried out at high temperatures and involve such complex chemical systems that fundamental scientific knowledge of the properties and behavior of these slags is inadequate. Various hypotheses have been proposed to explain known slag characteristics. The commonest of these regard the molten slag as constituted of compounds that are dissociated in varying degrees into their constituent oxides, as illustrated by Schenck1 and the recent papers of Chipman and co-authors.2-5 Another proposal is that these compounds dissociate by completes or partial ionization, the evidence for which has been reviewed by Martin and Derge.7 Whatever hypothesis is favored, the exact formulation of these compounds is incomplete. It is based on three principal types of information: I, Studies of solidified slag samples by X-ray diffraction, petrography, and similar methods that can be used at room temperature, The correlation of this information with the high-temperature properties of the molten slag is uncertain, 2. Studies of slag-metal equilibria, which have the advantage of providing observations on the molten slag at high temperature, However, even these data present problems of interpretation because they require a complete knowledge of the metal phase, 3, Direct measurements of properties of molten slag at the temperature of greatest metallurgical interest. Viscosity, electrical conductivity, specific heats, and similar properties have been measured, but the data of this type are widely scattered and frequently difficult to interpret, Additional direct measurements of properties of molten slag that can be interpreted in terms of chemical behavior are required, and this paper shows that the standard physical-chemical measurement of reversible electrode potentials, which measure the activity of specific constituents, is a fruitful source of such information, The purpose of this investigation, therefore, was to find an electrode combination that would yield reversible electromotive force measurements when dipped into the molten slag to be studied. The subject of mud sounds so simple, uninteresting and unimportant that it has failed to receive the attention that it deserves, at least as applied to the drilling of oil wells. As a matter of fact, it is one of the most complicated, technical, important and interesting subjects in connection with rotary drilling. In 1923, R. E. Colloml said "It should be possible to establish certain physical standards for mud fluid," but while considerable work has probably been done on the subject before and since that time, and numerous articles have been written, the progress of general knowledge of the subject and the application of better practices have not kept pace with other developments in rotary drilling, and physical standards cannot be considered as established. Mud is apt to be thought of as an accessible and cheap material, but its cost is likely to be an important factor in the total cost of drilling a well. Some wells "make" most of their own mud out of the formations drilled, but in most cases a great deal of mud-making material has to be supplied from more or less distant sources. Expenditures for mud materials by one California company totaled practically one-quarter million dollars during 1929 and averaged about $13 per rig per drilling day, or about $2000 per well. Under unfavorable conditions, mud cost may reach many times this figure. Parker2 says that in the Hobbs, N. M., field "as much as $75,000 has been spent on one well alone for mud and mud-weighting compounds."' Presumably this is an exceptional case. Unit cost of mud fluid will range from 10 c. per barrel, where suitable material is close at hand, to $1 where crude material is available at moderate price but must be hauled long distances, and on up to as much as $11 per barrel where high gas pressure requires the use of special processed weighting material. The cost of mud pales into insignificance, however, when the results of using improper mud are considered. Blow-outs and lost circulation are obviously the result of inadequate mud. Stuck drill pipe, whether or not twisted off, in many if not most cases probably is caused by cuttings settling out of the mud or the mud itself precipitating. Recent experi-

LEONARD Utilization from the Point of View of the Preparation Engineer The primary interest of the coal preparation engineer is process design, operation and maintenance to produce an acceptable product which can be sold at the greatest possible profit. Because of these interests, attention to the unrealized potential value of coal is sometimes neglected. The intent of this chapter is to alert the preparation engineer to the utilization possibilities of both the product as well as the tributary coal flow moving through a modem coal preparation plant. Thus, coal types having similar physical and chemical properties tend to become increasingly concentrated according to size, specific gravity and/or surface chemistry. The basis for any unrealized potential derives directly from the coal seam itself. Most coal seams consist of coal bands and benches which are sandwiched together in layers and which visually differ from each other by physical structure and luster. Randomly selected physical and chemical ranges determined from layers of coal in a single seam can easily differ by as much as 30 Hardgrove grindability indices, 0.30 of a specific gravity point, 20 percentage points of ash, six percentage points of dry volatile matter and 10 percentage points of total sulfur.1 Similar wide variations exist for calorific value, seam moisture content and undoubtedly, for any other conceivable coal test parameter which might be used for comparative purposes. These observations all point to the long established fact that coal is not homogeneous as conventional analytical methods might tend to indicate, but is instead a highly heterogeneous substance. Since both coal and associated minerals entering a preparation plant are highly heterogeneous, a multi-product potential beginning with certain flotation cell concentrates and ending with plant refuse may exist. Such a potential can and to a limited extent is achieved at some operations by drawing off coal according to size, specific gravity and/or surface chemistry differences from individual coal cleaning processes. Such a sequenced draw-off of coal of increasing ash increments could yield, among other products, chemical coals, coking coals, coals for pulverized fuel boilers, cyclone boiler coals, coals for cement plants, limestone, shale and clay. Introduction Wet autogenous grinding is utilized in three iron ore concentrating plants operated by the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company (CCI). This paper will trace some of the development in converting from the use of metal grinding mill liners to the use of rubber and will update the current performance of rubber liners in these applications. The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company is a natural resources firm with major interests in iron ore mining and processing and oil and gas contract drilling. The company also has interests in oil shale, uranium, forest products, and Great Lakes shipping. The three operations discussed in this paper are the Empire and Tilden Mines on the Marquette Iron Range in Michigan's Upper Peninsula and the Sherman Mine in northern Ontario, Canada. The Empire Iron Mining Partnership is managed by The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company and is owned by Inland Steel, McLouth Steel, The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company, and International Harvester. The Tilden Iron Mining Partnership is also managed by The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company and is owned by Algoma Steel Corporation, Ltd., Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation, The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company, Steel Company of Canada, Wheeling-Pittsburgh, and Sharon Steel Corporation. The Sherman Mine is a joint venture managed by Cliffs of Canada, Ltd. and owned by Dominion Foundries and Steel Company, Ltd. and Tetapaga Mining Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company. The concentrators at all three mines utilize two stage autogenous grinding. Empire and Sherman process magnetic iron ores (Table 1) and utilize magnetic, hydraulic, and flotation concentration methods. Tilden processes an oxidized iron ore (martite, goethite, and hematite) and utilizes a selective-flocculation desliming and flotation concentration flowsheet. Final grind particle sizes are 90% -325M (43k) at Sherman, 90% -500M (25,u ) at Empire and 85% -500M (25 µ) at Tilden. Developmental History The success of using rubber mill linings in Scandinavia led to the first rubber mill lining used by CCI. It was installed in a conventional primary ball mill at Republic Mine in 1964 as reported by Lindroos (1970). This was followed by additional rubber liners for both primary and regrind ball mills. Ely:1 "Conservation, narrowly and strictly considered, means the preservation in unimpaired efficiency of the resources of the earth; or in a condition so nearly unimpaired as the nature of the case, or Wise exhaustion, admits. And broadly considered, it means more than the word itself implies, for it naturally includes an examination of methods Whereby the natural inheritance of the human race may be improved; and still more broadly considered, and as used in popular discussion, it includes a treatment of the effects of productive conservation methods upon distribution. "Conservation means a sacrifice of the present generation to the future generations Whenever it is carried too far. There is a sharp limit to the economic sacrifice that we may reasonably ask the private person to make for even the present Welfare, and the limit is still sharper when we come to consider the interests of future generations." In a paper on the iron ores of America, presented to the Pan-American Scientific Congress at Washington, I have emphasized the fact that the reserves of iron ores in the two Americas are enormously in excess of the requirements of the present generation, in fact, so large that no shortage is to be anticipated for many generations in the future; that a large part of the value of iron ores is put into them by man's efforts to make them available. This fact is fundamental for the intelligent consideration of- policies of conservation as applied to iron ore. As I interpret it, this fact makes it practically unnecessary that the present generation should make any especial sacrifice for future generations in the way of conservation of its iron-ore resources. Even if we were disposed to look forward to a period of 100 or 200 years, with a view to insuring the welfare of the people living at that time, it is doubtful whether any procedure we could now formulate would materially help them in the matter of iron ores, so large are the reserves available. In order that an appeal for conservation may be effective it must obviously favor the welfare of the present or immediately following generations; it must promise benefits to general and individual welfare during a period within the range of comprehension of the average man.
