The most common method of identifying hydrocarbon-bearing strata in a well that penetrates many different formations involves measurement and interpretation of the electrical properties of the formations as determined by electrical logs. Even though this method is used extensively, and even though in a great many instances it is capable of indicating presence of oil or gas, situations arise for which it is extremely difficult, if not impossible, to deduce the presence of hydrocarbons. These situations may involve the following. 1. A thin formation, bounded by highly resistive formations, in which it is impossible to obtain the actual resistivity of the uninvaded zone with existing logging devices. 2. A formation in which invasion has been so extensive that a value for the uninvaded zone resistivity cannot be obtained. 3. A very shaly formation in which the resistivity index, I, is lower than that usually associated with productive formations. 4. Laminated formations comprised of thin productive sands separated by thin shale streaks in which the individual sand and shale streaks are too thin to permit measurement of uninvaded-zone resistivity with existing logging devices. 5. Productive formations in which the water saturation is high. To extend the utility of electric log interpretation to identification of hydrocarbons in all types of formations, there is strong incentive to find a method not subject to these limitations. Some time ago, in connection with research on the wettability of reservoir rock, an investigation was conducted in which the resistivities of cores were measured shortly after they were removed from a core barrel, and again after they had been extracted and restored to their original oil and brine saturation.' The resistivities after extraction were generally lower. Other tests made on the cores indicated that they were more nearly water wet after they were extracted; thus, it was assumed that the observed changes in resistivities were due to a change in wettability of the cores. Other experiments'," have shown that resistivities of rock samples are sharply dependent on wettability. These experiments have shown that oil-wet samples are more resistive than water-wet samples. To obtain an understanding of how the wetting properties of the surfaces of core material affect electrical resistivity, a series of experiments was conducted. Two groups of core samples were prepared for testing. One group contained brine, but no residual oil. The other group was saturated with brine, flooded with oil to a low water saturation, then flooded with brine to a final residual oil saturation. Resistivity measurements were made on each group. Both groups were then flooded with the original brine to which a chemical had been added that renders sand and clay surfaces preferentially oil wet, a so-called reverse-wetting agent. very little change in resistivity was observed in cores containing only water. The group containing residual oil, however, showed resistivity increases of 100 to 200 per cent. These experiments showed that the resistivity of a core containing oil could be altered by changing wet-tability of the core. Moreover, the possibility was introduced that reverse-wetting agents might be employed as the basis for a logging method for identification of oil-bearing strata. Since behavior of a porous rock containing gas and water might be expected to be similar to that of a rock containing oil and water, such a method should also be applicable to identification of gas-bearing zones. In principle the wettability of the invaded zone could be reversed without altering conductivity of the interstitial water or the hydrocarbon saturation therein. Those strata showing significantly increased invaded-zone resistivities would, therefore, contain hydrocarbons; those with no significant change would be filled only with water. Addition of a reverse-wetting agent to a hydro carbon -bearing zone which is, by nature, already preferentially oil wet would not result in an enhancement of its resistivity. It is generally believed, however, that most hydrocarbon-bearing strata are preferentially water wet.

The solid solubilities of the compounds PbS, PbSe, and PbTe have been determined by equilibrating single crystals with two phase alloys. The solubilities were determined by measuring the Hall coefficient of the equilibrated samples. The observed maximum deviations from stoichiometry on the lead rich and the chalcogen-rich side of the phase fields were: at. pct excess Pb at pct excess S at 850°C; PbSe--4 x 10'" at. pct excess Pb at at. pct excess at 800°C; and PbTe-2.8 x 10 4 at. pct excess Pb at 780°C, 10"1 at. pct excess Te at 720°C. The previously developed theory of retrograde solubility has been expanded to include intrinsic disorder in the compounds, and the experimental results are in agreement with the theory. THE solid solubility limits of intermetallic semiconducting compounds are of considerable interest, since many of these compounds have potential use as thermoelements in thermoelectric devices, as infrared detectors, or in semiconductor devices. The solidus curves of a significant number of these compounds have been reported to be retrograde with the maximum solid solubility occurring between the eu-tectic and the maximum melting temperatures. In a previous paper,' equations were derived which permit calculation of the maximum solid solubility of an AB compound exhibiting retrograde solubility. Derivation of these equations was based on the assumption that the compound is a nondegenerate semiconductor at the temperature under consideration, that the defects were unassociated, and that the vibrational contribution to the entropy of the compound could be evaluated by the Einstein approximation. It was shown that at the temperature of the maximum solid solubility The entropy term ASS is composed of the entropy of formation of the solid stoichiometric compound (AS$)*, and the entropy due to deviations from stoichiometric composition which is the sum of a con-figurational term (aS*), a vibrational term (AS,), and an electronic term (AS,). The derivation is generalized in the appendix to include intrinsic disorder. The electronic entropy term is also recalculated in the appendix. Of the various semiconducting compounds, the solidus curves of Pbs,' and ~b~e,~ have been most extensively studied. The solidus of PbSe has also been determined, but the temperature of maximum solubility has not been accurately established.5129 The present investigation was undertaken to compare the experimental solid solubility data for these systems with the values predicted theoretically. Since the temperature and composition of the maximum solubility of PbSe has not been accurately determined, experimental emphasis was placed on determining the solidus curves for PbSe in the region of maximum solubility, although experiments were also performed on PbS and PbTe at several temperatures. X-ray diffraction studies were also made on carefully prepared powder samples of PbSe to determine the variation of lattice parameter with composition. In a comparison of the creep -rupture properties of nickel in air arid in vacuum there is a reversal in relative strengths with variations in stress. At low stresses the properties are better in air while at high stresses they are better in vacuum. In the early stages of creep in a high stress test the specimen in air nzay have the lower creep rate but the one in vacuum is creeping at a lower rate in the later stages. A mechanism, involving two competing processes in terms of oxidation strengthening and weakening by surface-energy reduction, is proposed to explain these reversals. It had generally been assumed that, relative to their properties in air, the high-temperature strengths of metals would be increased in an inert atmosphere as a result of the elimination of the deteriorating effects of oxidation. However, several recent investigations have shown that the creep strength may be greater in air than in nonoxidizing gases. Pickus and Parker1 found that the creep rate of nickel was lower in air than in hydrogen or nitrogen. Internal oxidation was mentioned by Shepard and Schalliol as a possible cause for the longer creep life of Hastelloy C in air than in vacuum or helium. Sweetland and Parker, who observed lower creep rates for aluminum and copper in air than in helium, discuss the possible applicability of the dislocation-barrier mechanism to explain their results. Surface oxide layers may interfere with the escape of dislocations through the surface or with their generation there. In addition to showing the strengthening in air of low-alloy and stainless steel, and nickel and cobalt-base alloys, shahinian4 presented notch-effect data which indicate the role of stress concentrations; alloys of relatively low ductility were more sensitive to atmosphere strengthening when notched specimens were used. Although Bleakney's copper wires had a lower reduction of area in air than in vacuum, it is difficult to interpret his results in terms of strength changes since the stresses employed were not measured. In contrast to these data showing the strengthening in air, a number of investigations, most at relatively low temperatures, have demonstrated that the environment may cause a decrease in strength. These results are generally explained in terms of the effect of environment on surface energy. In a review of the subject, Benedicks and Harden use the concept of atomic bonding to explain how the adsorption of impurities would decrease the energy of a clean surface. A decrease in surface energy would facilitate the propagation of cracks or extension of the surface. Use of this mechanism is made by sato7 to explain the weakening of steel specimens bent in various liquids, by Potek and Shcheglakovs for the reduction of fracture strength of steel in molten metal, and by Benedicks and Harden for the reduction of strength of a variety of materials in a number of liquids. A similar explanation might be used for the results of Forestier and Clauss. The fracture stress of fine wires pulled in a variety of gases, including air, is lower than in vacuum. They attributed their results to the "tendency" for the gases to condense on the metal surface. That the strength of metals is affected by the type of gas in which the test is conducted has been demonstrated convincingly; the mechanism of the effect, however, is still uncertain. This investigation represents one in a series to explore the influence of variations in alloy composition and test conditions on the atmosphere effect in the expectation that the results would afford an insight into the processes taking place. UNDERCLAY squeeze is the plastic flowing of underclay below coal pillars into mined-out entries and rooms. Squeezes may be caused either by wet mine conditions where the moisture is taken up by the clay—making it more plastic—or by the presence of certain clay minerals, such as mont-morillonite, which are plastic when there is enough natural moisture. Under either condition, sufficient stress will cause the underclay to flow. Squeezes may fill an entry or room within several hours, or it may be several months before movement stops. Squeeze areas commonly cover hundreds or thousands of square yards. The Coal Div. of the Illinois State Geological Survey has collected samples of underclays from various mines and from cores drilled by coal companies in the state. From these samples natural moisture content, particle size and particle size distribution, and clay mineralogy are determined. Data from samples collected from the underclay below Herrin (No. 6) coal in the Lumaghi Coal Co. mine near Collinsville, Ill., are used in this report to clarify points in the discussion. Data from samples taken from other mines lead to the same conclusions. A generalized geological section for the area is given in Table I. The underclay below coal No. 6 ranges from a few inches to 3 or 4 ft thick. The upper 6 to 18 in. are noncalcareous; the lower part becomes more calcareous with depth. Limestone nodules become larger with depth, almost grading into the limestone below. In areas where the clay is nearly absent the limestone may thicken to take its place; thus they may complement each other in thickness. There are two types of squeeze areas in a mine. In one type up to 3 or 4 ft of underclay lie in what appears to be a depression in the limestone underneath. This is suggested by a rim surrounding the squeeze area where the underclay is thin and the limestone lies within a few inches of the coal. In the second type the underclay of the squeeze area is surrounded by underclay of similar thicknesses which does not squeeze. Test Methods: Natural moisture content, particle size and particle size distribution, and clay mineralogy were determined by the following methods: Natural moisture is the moisture content a clay contains in its natural environment, expressed in percentage of the weight of ovendried clay (110°C or 230°F). To obtain the natural moisture content, given in Table 11, the clay samples were sealed in containers as soon as the samples were taken in the mines. Particle size and particle size distribution were determined by the pipette method,' and the data were plotted as cumulative curves, Fig. 1, on semi-logarithmic paper. Particle size was plotted on the logarithmic scale and percentage on the arithmetic scale. The quartiles (diameters that correspond to frequencies of 25 and 75 pct) and medians (diameters that correspond to the frequency of 50 pct) of the samples were determined from these curves. The clay minerals were identified from the data obtained by differential thermal' and X-ray powder" techniques. The differential thermal analyses were made on the whole samples, whereas the X-ray analyses were made on fractions of less than 2p. Data and Discussion Moisture Content: After the sealed jars had stood for 24 hr, those that contained squeeze samples had perspired, so that droplets of water had accumulated on the insides of the jars. Table II shows the moisture in the clay after it had perspired for 24 hr. (This perspiring was not noted in samples from nonsqueeze areas.) After perspiration one of the squeeze samples still had a higher moisture content than the samples that did not squeeze. Flotation of minerals has usually been discussed in terms of solid-liquid interfacial phenomena. This paper discusses the relative importance of phenomena such as collector adsorption at other interfaces formed between the bubble, liquid and solid. Adsorption of collector ions of various chain lengths at liquid-gas and solid-gas interfaces has been obtained. The data have been analyzed under conditions corresponding to those of flotation to show the significant role of collector adsorbed on the bubble surface in determining the bubble-mineral attachment required for flotation, and consequently to suggest consideration of this role in the development of better flotation conditions. Vacuum flotation of quartz with alkyl ammonium acetate reported in the foregoing paper1 showed that the collector chain length has an effect on flotation even at concentrations below those necessary for hemi-micelle association of the hydrocarbon chains at a solid-liquid interface. This chain length effect might be explained by the following arguments: Hydrocarbon chains find it energetically favorable to be in a medium of low dielectric constant. Considering the possibility of an iceberg structure at the solid-liquid interface, such a structure would produce a region of lower dielectric constant at the solid-liquid interface than in the liquid phase, because the dielectric constant of ice is 2 to 3,2 while that of water is 80. Depending on chain length, this difference will certainly cause even individual ions to adsorb in higher quantities at the solid-liquid interface. Another mechanism to consider is the possible formation of dimers, trimers, etc and chain length would influence this formation. But, above all, the chain length effect on flotation at concentrations of low adsorption at the solid-liquid interface could be due to the significant but often-neglected role of the collector adsorption at the bub- ble surface. Collector ions or molecules are adsorbed both at the solid-liquid interface and the liquid-gas interface. Below the concentration for hemi-micelle association at the Stern plane adjacent to the surface, the bulk of the collector ions adsorbed at the solid-liquid interface are in the diffuse part of the double layer. If such systems, where there is a gas bubble coming in contact with the solid surface, are to achieve some degree of electroneutrality, those collector ions would have to migrate from the diffuse part of the double layer to the region directly adjacent to the surface during the induction period when the bubble is making contact with the solid. The time necessary for this migration would contribute to the induction period required for creation of the solid-gas interface. It seems reasonable that the induction period could be reduced sufficiently for flotation to occur if these collector ions were carried to the surface by the bubble. In an attempt to ascertain whether or not the bubble could possibly have sufficient collector ions at its surface to meet the requirement mentioned above, the adsorption density of the collector ions at the liquid-air interface was determined. For this purpose, the surface tension of alkyl ammonium acetate solutions was determined as a function of concentration. Adsorption densities of the collector at the liquid-gas interface were calculated using the Gibbs adsorption equation: where y is the interfacial tension and ri and pi are the adsorption density and the chemical potential, respectively, of the chemical species, i. Using the convention that the adsorption density of water at the interface is zero, the following relationship is obtained for the liquid-gas interface where lg refers to liquid-gas interface and RA+ refers to the alkyl ammonium ions. IN response to many urgent requests for a concrete realization of a series of standard temperatures that would be available to any one anywhere for the standardization of pyrometers and the reproduction of the standard scale of temperature for use in laboratories and industrial works, the Bureau, in 1916, made arrangements with several manufacturers to prepare a series of- pure metals that could best serve this purpose. After the necessary preliminary work of chemical analysis, as a check on the purity, together with exact determinations of melting or freezing points, the Bureau began, in 1917, the issuing of melting -point standards of tin, zinc, aluminum, and copper. At the outset, it was decided to secure metals of the highest purity and of American manufacture, and this was accomplished in a more satisfactory manner than anticipated. In the preparation of these temperature standards, the Bureau has had the hearty cooperation of several American companies, which have succeeded in producing metals highly satisfactory for the purpose and of as high a state of purity as could have been obtained anywhere. Each company that undertook the responsibility of furnishing a metal for this series of standards exercised most painstaking care to produce the best possible product as to purity and uniformity. A representative of the Bureau witnessed the actual preparation of each metal. The 300 and 400-lb. (136 and 181-kg.) samples making up the first series were all used up, with the exception of the aluminum, early in 1919. The Bureau has taken steps to replenish its stocks of metals serving as pyrometric standards and to the list has been added lead. The copper and lead are being ordered this time in 1-ton lots and the zinc and tin in 300-lb. (136 kg.) lots as before. The wide dissemination of these samples will be appreciated when it is noted that the metals are distributed by the Bureau inn quantities of 50 cu. cm. each, at $2 a sample and accompanied by a certificate which gives the melting point as determined by samples from the same lot. The manufacture and detailed description of chemical analyses, physical measurements, and precautions in use of these pyrometric standards, are described in detail in the Bureau Circulcar No., 66.

A SELF-RESPECTING miner doesn't wash the cuttin's off his hard hat until he quits his job but, on the other hand, he keeps his lamp clean and a "spot" focus on the work at hand; the former habit is a matter of pride and the latter serves for efficient operation. During 1949, the mining engineer got all the "wet raises" for the problem of cutting costs to meet the drop of metal prices and keeping research work up to schedule when strikes tied up his work were his headaches. We note, not without admiration, that he hasn't washed the muck off his hat in token of surrender but, on the contrary, his light shines bright on the job to be done as can be seen in the following pages. Few people have any conception of how much ore and rock have to be mined and how much sorting it takes to cull a pound of copper from a 1 % ore body. These people would be even more startled to picture the problems faced by the engineer in mining and extracting, profitably, .2 oz of gold from a ton of ore as is done at some of our lode mines. Strikers have sometimes kept our researchers from their pilot plants and research laboratories, but the end of the year shows progress in making ore out of taconite and ferruginous sandstone, with a pilot plant in operation at Aurora, Minn., and plans for one near Birmingham. Unfortunately, it looks as though the mining engineer will have to make John Doe secure in mineral resources in spite of himself. Coal for steel, power, and to warm our homes is still economically possible, in spite of Mr. Lewis, through development of mechanized tools for mining. During the year, the use of continuous mining machines has extended, transport systems are being adopted to keep the ore flowing from the face to the tune of 40 tons per man-shift. Experiments in the gasification of coal are going forward in several places and may eventually extend our fuel reserves by the addition of coal seams now too lean for mining. Liquid fuel from coal, oil shale, or natural gas will become economic when oil consumption exceeds our supply; but, at less than 30 cents a ton direct cost for mining oil shale, the engineer is almost making it competitive under present market conditions. In this age of specialists, the mining engineer is still holding his own as a broad-gauge man. As a matter of fact, he is emerging from a stage of semispecialization as a coal, nonmetallics, or metal mining man to the realization that, with mechanization, mining is fundamentally materials handling whether it is fluorspar, coal, or copper ore. From the coal business come rubber-tired mechanical loaders to the iron mines of Birmingham. Shuttle cars are also finding application in the lead mines of the Tri-State. Open-pit methods are universal. Belt conveyors, trucks, Diesels, and mobile, jumbomounted drills are finding application in all types of mining. In preparation, such methods as flotation,- heavy density, electrical, and centrifugal are finding application in coal, nonmetallics, and metals. These concepts have been recognized by the mining engineer who has kept himself informed and has been quick to seize a method, machine, or a process from another operation and, with ingenuity, applied it to his problems. This, our Annual Review issue, is written by mining engineers. In gathering these separate articles under one cover for publication, we think of it as a trrbute to the tireless energy and skill of these men. They get little of the publicity accorded physicists, medical men, labor leaders, or company executives, but they supply raw materials without which industry would die.

ALTHOUGH brasses and bronzes have been made for ages, a systematic study of their physical properties has been carried out only during the years of the present century. Among these properties may be included those which are to be detected by means of microscopic examination; in other words by the science of metallography. The earlier workers in this field, both in this country and abroad, gave their attention to steel. When the senior author explored the situation in 1902, there was little encouragement to be found in undertaking the study of the non-ferrous alloys. A start was made, and the metallography of the brasses and bronzes, as well as of the copper-nickel- zinc alloys developed materially under his direction. Annealing experiments were begun in 1902, and in the succeeding years the effect of temperature, and the influence of previous working, on the grain size of brass were studied. The conclusions so well known and widely published today were largely reached during those earlier years. In 1905 the first complete annealing series were made. By this it is meant that brass and copper sheet, 5 B & S Nos. hard, was machined into tensile test specimens, then annealed under accurate control for 30 min. at temperatures up to the melting point of the material. Various determinations were made, including tensile strength and elongation in 2 in. There rapidly followed similar series on all of the copper-zinc alloys from 100 to 60 per cent. copper, on the bronzes, cupronickels, and on copper-zinc-nickel alloys. At this point there was published by Grard, in October, 1909,1 the very comprehensive and complete work on the tensile properties of cartridge brass, 90-10 copper-zinc, and electrolytic copper. The excellent photomicrographs in that paper illustrated the changes in structure produced by cold rolling as well as by annealing at different temperatures, but where Grard's work was confined to copper and to two alloys, the investigations in this laboratory have been over the entire fields of the commercial copper-zinc alloys, copper-tin alloys, representative copper-nickel and copper-nickel-zinc alloys as well as aluminum bronzes and others of a more special nature.

More than 20 years have passed since the publication of Lindgren and Ransome's report on the Cripple Creek District,1 which was made when the district was much more active and prosperous than in recent years. They concluded that the output of the district, which had reached its maximum of about $18,200,000 in 1900, would gradually decline, and their conclusion has been confirmed by records of subsequent production. Between 1905 and 1915 annual declines were partly compensated by encouraging increases, especially in 1908, 1914, and 1915; but a rapid continuous decline followed, due largely to the war and its after-effect's, until in 1922 the value of output was only slightly more than $4,000,000. It rose to nearly $5,000,000 in 1924, but declined again in 1925 and in 1926, when it was about $4,400,000, and represented ores mainly from deep levels in the Cresson and Portland mines. The profitable operations of these two mines were the principal factors leading to a study of ore at deep levels in the district by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Colorado Metal Mining Fund. The principal reasons for Lindgren and Ransome's conclusion were three: (I) the greater cost and difficulty of deep exploration; (2) the decrease in the number of veins with increasing depth, and (3) the probability that the telluride ore, believed to have formed at comparatively low temperature, would not persist indefinitely in depth. Operations since they made these statements have verified the first two, but call for some modification of the third. Rich telluride ore is being mined at a profit in the Portland mine 3000 ft. below the present surface, 07. 5000 ft. below the original surface of the Cripple Creek volcano, as interpreted by Lindgren and Ransome. The question arises, therefore, as to the number and extent of such deep deposits, and the answer, so far as it can now be given, must be based mainly on structural data, supplemented by data on the processes of ore deposition. With the greatly expanding use of magnesium during the war, it appeared necessary to the War Metallurgy Committee that the notch sensitivity of magnesium alloy extrusions be further investigated and the influence of various factors upon notch sensitivity be noted. Accordingly, the National Defense Research Committee of the Office of Scientific Research and Development placed a research contract with the University of California, supervised by the War Metallurgy Committee. The work discussed herein was done under "Restricted" Project NRC-21, reported in Dec. 1943~; it has been released for publica-tion by the O.S.R.D. Scope of the Investigation The notch sensitivity of various magnesium alloy extrusions was determined under axial tension, and also under several conditions of nonaxial tension. Hardness, grain size and other metallographic features were observed; stress-strain data were obtained, and the chemical compositions of the alloys were determined, in order to correlate these quantities with thc notch sensitivity. Notch sensitivity under axial tensile load was determined for a few specimens which had been cold worked to various degrees by tensile prestraining. Magnesium alloy extrusions studied included Dowmetal 0, X, J, and A(. For comparison, extrusions of aluminum alloy 24s-T, cast bars of aluminum alloy 122-T2, and cast bars of magnesium alloy C were also tested. The specified chemical composition of these alloys is given in Table I. All bars tested were within specification limits of composition. Investigation of thc tensile notch sensitivity of various magnesium alloy extrusions, under conditions of axial and eccentric load, showed little or no correlation with stress-strain or other conventional data. Since the many uncontrolled variables present might mask significant relationships, one alloy was selected for intensive study. Magnesium 0 alloy extrusions were subjected to experimental heat treatments, and the ,Changing hardness, tensile strength, microstructure, and notch sensitivity observed. Experimental Techniques and Procedures Tensile Testing Bars used for axial loading were machined with % in.- and with 34-in. minimum diam1 and included specimens with 60" V notches (Fig I and 2). At the outset I would like to make it clear that I do not enter this discussion in a controversial spirit, but in an attempt to contribute something helpful to an understanding of a difficult problem. I have too high regard for the- sterling quality of the work of the men who have studied this subject in detail to offer anything in the way of essential contradiction to their statements of fact. Difference of opinion arises from differing valuation of the possible alternative hypothesis which these facts suggest. Some degree of recrystallization in limestone contact zones has been recognized by many investigators. Earlier investigators, for the most part, assigned an important, if not the most important, ro1e to recrystallization in development of these zones. With the growing recognition of introduction of ores and gangue materials into the contact zone from igneous rocks through the medium of primary magmatic solutions, there has been a tendency to ascribe to this process most, if not all, of the chemical and mineralogical characteristics of the contact zonc. This has involved a correspondingly diminished emphasis on recrystallization of substances already there as a factor in the process, and in some cases even the complete elimination of this hypothesis. From detailed study of a few contacts, casual observation of others, and a general familiarity with the literature, some of us have been led in recent years to raisc the question whether the pendulum has not swung too far away from recrystallization toward direct introduction from igneous sources, and to argue for more recognition of the part played by recrysta11ization.l The inevitable sequence has been that those of us who have .taken this view have been charged, at least by inference, with emphasizing recrystallization to the total exclusion of the alternative process. Scientists, like other men, like to classify and pigeon-hole views under simple and definite designations, leaving out qualifications which would tend to make the classification more difficult to state. Some years ago, at the plant of the Baltimore Copper Smelting & Rolling Co., the receipt of large quantities of copper blister running high in lead, nickel, and arsenic resulted in the formation of a great amount of very foul slag, in the anode furnaces. A typical analysis of this slag was: Gold, oz. per ton......... 0.09 Arsenic, per cent.......... 0.60 Silver, oz. per ton......'.. 13.20 Antimony, per cent........ 0.50 Copper, per cent......... 19.50 Silica, per cent............ 28.30 Lead, per cent........... 11.90 FeO, per cent............. 19.20 Nickel, per cent.......... 4.60 CaO, per cent............. 1.60 The problem was to get out the copper in marketable form, to save the gold, silver, and particularly the nickel, and to get rid of as much as possible of the lead, arsenic, and other elements that were valueless to the Baltimore plant. In a copper refinery that does not take custom material for matte smelting, the usual method is to smelt the anode slag with coke in a reducing furnace, the black copper thus formed being sent back to the anode furnaces; this was the custom at Baltimore. An average anode slag will contain, perhaps, 40 per cent. copper and such small quantities of lead, nickel, etc., that smelting will get rid of most of these impurities in the black-copper furnace slag. To treat such an impure slag in this way, however, would result in a large nickel loss, and would send back to the anode furnaces all the lead and nickel not so lost, where it would be slagged off again and returned to the black-copper furnace as a slag still more concentrated in impurities. The result would probably be a constantly increasing amount of anode slag containing a likewise constantly increasing percentage of impurities. To avoid such a disastrous closed circuit some other process had to be devised. A small multiple-tank room, built for impure copper as an adjunct to the main series electrolytic refinery, was available, so the following standard process was suggested:

The object of this work was to obtain and correlate information on effect of internal stress in variously drawn tubes on several properties. Also, a simple approximate method of comparing types of stress distribution in such variously drawn tubes was sought. There is also included some work on comparison of single and polycrystalline materials and effect of different types of operation and preferred orientation. Preparation of Material A series of tubes was drawn to study the effect of the type and degree of final reduction on various physical properties and the approximate distribution of stress intensity across the tube wall. The material used all came from a single heat of 70-30 brass melted in a regular production Ajax-Wyatt induction furnace. The analysis of the metal as cast was: copper, 70.36 per cent; lead, 0.04; iron, 0.02; zinc, balance. The material was cast in "shells" with 4 in. outside diameter and in. wall thickness. It was drawn part way down according to the usual standard mill schedule and then by suitable individual schedules to finish by a variety of types and degrees of drawing to the same final cases in every instance; namely, 0.750 in. outside diameter by 0.080 in. wall thickness. The exact final draws, together with the percentage area reductions, diameter reductions and gage reductions are given in Table 1. In fabricating these tubes, rather unusual precautions were observed to insure the elimination of ail variables not under immediate study. All intermediate anneals were carried out at about 1200" F. down to the so-called "cut-in size"; namely, 17/16 by 3/16 in. From this point on, all anneals were made at from 1050' to 1100" F. The greatest care was used all through to have the tubes as free from minor surface defects as possible. When such defects were visible on intermediate sizes they were carefully filed out. On the final draw to 3/4-in diameter the die was aligned with the greatest possible precision in order to insure as straight a tube as possible

As the Seminole area, Seminole and Pottawatomie Counties, Okla., appears to be the chief danger zone of overproduction in the United States, it may be of interest to review the production records of the various pools which make up this area; also to dis-cuss the future prospects of these pools, together with the structurally "high" points which may develop into new pools. It is also of interest to appraise the effect of the curtailment program in this general area, which was agreed to in principle by the various Seminole op-erators at a meeting held on May 23 at the offices of W. C. Teagle in New York. There are four large pools in the greater Seminole area. They are, in the order of their importance Seminole City, Bowlegs, Earlsboro, and Searight pools. A glance at the accompanying general map of the area will show their relative situation. The detail maps show the extent and area of these prolific spots. Seminole production comes from the Wilcox sand of Ordovician age, found at a depth of 3900 to 4300 feet. Semninole City Pool:-This pool was discovered in Wilcox sand in July, 1926. By Jan., 1927, there were 123 wells completed, making 146,000 bbl. per day. The field reached its peak of 253,000 bbl. per day the last week of Feb., 1927, with 211 completions and a per well average of 1200 bbl. On July 4 there were 304 wells completed, producing 102,000 bbl., with a per well aver-age of 336 bbl. per day. This pool will cover an area of approximately 3500 acres. It has produced approxi-mately 38,000,000 bbl. to. July 1. Estimates of total ultimate production are around 55,000,000 bbl. or somewhat better than 15,000 bbl. per acre. Some of the individual leases have already yielded 30,000 and 40,000 bbl. to the acre. Bowlegs Pool:-This pool shows 175 drilling wells and 131 completions making 180,000 bbl. per day, with an average per well production of 1380 bbl. It appears that this pool will develop into nearly as large an area as Seminole City. The wells, however, do not give up

Considering the importance of the steel trade and the strategic position occupied in it by the Birmingham district, it may be surprising to many to learn that the first pig iron smelted with coke was made in Alabama on Feb. 28, 1876, although merchant pig iron had been produced in Rockwood, Tenn., in 1867 -a plant that is still in operation The heavy deposit of Clinton ore, extending from Pennsylvania into Alabama, varies greatly in accessibility, on account of geological changes such as erosion or anticlinal upthrow; it varies equally as much in thickness and in quality. The brown ores extensively scattered through the South also vary materially in quality—some are relatively low in phosphorus and high in manganese, and vice versa. The red ore varies materially in phosphorus, but the iron produced from this ore was always considered too high in phosphorus for treatment by the acid bessemer or open-hearth process and did not contain sufficient phosphorus for the basic bessemer process. Under these conditions there remained only the basic open hearth as a possible process; and for many years it appeared impossible to use this, because, with coke smelted iron, the silicon was too high to permit its use in basic lined furnaces. Various attempts were made, from time to time, to produce a low-silicon iron, by carrying high lime burdens together with harder blowing, but the blast furnaces of the South were not equipped with the blowing power of today and from 31/2to 5-lb. pressure was the normal working condition. The result of these experiments, therefore, was that a furnace would get a lime set or be hastily changed to avoid scaffolding, and engineers and superintendents were careful not to renew the experiments. After the development of the beds of dolomitic stone in East Birmingham, the carrying of sufficient lime to bring down the silicon in the blast furnace to the permissible open-hearth limit was successfully done at the Alice furnace in Birmingham, commencing July 22, 1895. In a very short time the entire output of that furnace was being sold to different Northern steel manufacturers, with a guarantee that silicon and phosphorus should run below 1 per cent.

CERTAIN features of the response of copper and brass to deformation and recrystallization remain obscure. The textures obtained on rolled sheet are listed by Schmid and Boas1 as: No adequate explanation has been advanced for the presence of the secondary deformation texture of copper and its absence in brass or for the origin of the cubic recrystallization texture of copper.2 A recent publication3 attempted to rationalize the above empirically described annealing texture of brass on the basis of retention of the (110) [112] rolling orientation plus twinning about the central octahedral poles of the usual secondary (110) [115] orientation. The difference in the textures of annealed copper as compared to 70-30 brass is also shown by the difference in the position of ears for drawn copper, at o° and 90°, as compared with drawn brasses, at 45°, for all compositions between 90-10 and 70-30.4 Data on individual crystals are as yet too few to permit of an analysis of these textures comparable to that of mild steel as made by Barrett and Levenson.5 EXPERITMENTAL METHODS The materials studied included copper specimens cut from the central, equiaxed crystal portion of a tough-pitch wirebar; brass made from this copper and high-purity (99.99 per cent) zinc including alloys of 7 per. cent, 15 per cent, 24 per cent, 29 per cent and 36 per cent Zn and large single crystals of 70-30 brass. Sections ¼ in. thick of the cast polycrystalline copper and brasses were reduced 40 per cent by rolling, recrystallized to a common grain size of 0.045 mm. and then rolled directly to foil 0.002 in. thick. Hardness readings employing both the Vickers and Rockwell machines were taken at intervals during the reduction. For comparison, similar specimens were cross-rolled-i.e., turned through 90 for each pass-and comparable hardness data were secured. Finally sections from the single crystals of brass were cut to obtain the following initial orientations; these sections were rolled, hardness data secured and a complete micrographic record of structural changes obtained:

THE Au-Ni alloy system is one of many binary systems in which the supersaturated solid solutions may exhibit a multistaged precipitation behavior during aging. In addition to the equilibrium phase separation, which was studied extensively years ago in the range 400" to 600",' there exists at least one earlier stage of precipitation, i.e., preprecipitation, which occurs below 300°C in quenched alls.-This note reports on some effects of composition on the preprecipitation in Au-Ni alloys as determined from resistivity measurements. The kinetics of the preprecipitation were studied in alloys of 15 to 85 at. pct Ni which were water- were found in alloys which after various quenching-and-aging treatments were slowly heated and cooled (1Z"C per hr) between room temperature and about 300°C. Two such heating-cooling curves for a 40 pct Ni alloy are shown in Fig. 2. Similar effects were observed in other 15 to 50 pct Ni alloys. These curves are characterized upon heating by two changes in slope indicated by A and B in the figure and upon cooling by a resistivity hysteresis of approximately the size of the original decrease in resistivity after the aging treatment. The inflection at B generally falls at about the same temperature for all heating curves for a given alloy and appears to be a critical temperature (T,) for the preprecipitation for that alloy. The values of T, for most of the 15 to 50 pct Ni alloys fall in the range 200" to 220°C. The position of the inflection at A depends upon the heat treatment prior to the heating-cooling run and perhaps the heating rate, which was held constant in these runs. The preprecipitates grown in by the appropriate aging treatments seem to decrease in size as the alloys are heated from A to T,, dissolve at T,, and do not reappear after cooling below T,. When similar heating-cooling treatments were performed on 60 to 85 pct Ni alloys, an entirely different behavior was observed. Typical results are shown in Fig. 3 for an 85 pct Ni alloy. In these

In past years the exploration of the oil possibilities of Colombia has been confined to parts of three distinct physiographic provinces; namely, the coastal plains area near the Caribbean Sea, the Magdalena Valley and the upper reaches of the Maracaibo Basin near the Venezuelan border. During 1935, little exploratory work and no drilling was carried on on the coast, but there was considerable activity in the other two areas. In the Magdalena Valley, the Tropical Oil Co. continued its producing and development operations on the De Mares Concession. The Socony-Vacuum exercised the option it acquired in 1934 on Sr. Luciano Restrepo's concession adjacent to the Tropical property and north of the Sogamoso River. No wells have been started on the Socony's lands although, according to the terms of the lease, drilling must be started within the next two years. West of the Carare River and adjacent to the Tropical's southwestern boundary, the Sociedad Nacional del Carare denounced the lands formerly held by the Union Colombiana, whose lease automatically lapsed during the year owing to the company's failure to comply with its drilling obligations. In the same area, the concessions held by Callejas et al. and the Société Européene des Pétroles are also understood to have lapsed for the same reason. Holdings of other interests in the Magdalena Valley were inactive during the year. Near the upper part of the Maracaibo Basin, the Gulf, through its subsidiary the Colombian Petroleum Co., continued active exploration and development on its Barco concession. Colombian Petroleum Co.—The following information and that presented in the accompanying tables relating to the activities of the Colombian Petroleum Co. was supplied through the courtesy of Mr. E. S. Bleecker, chief geologist of that company. Four wells were completed during the year on the north Petrolea dome, where an attempt is being made to define the limits of the field. On the south end of the Petrolea anticline, one well, Petrolea No. 3, which might be classed as a wildcat, encountered a heavy flow of salt water immediately below the oil zone and had to be abandoned. A second location has been made 1 miles south of No. 3 and somewhat higher on
