THE structures and properties of the copper-aluminum alloys have been the subject of much study since the classic investigation of Carpenter and Edwards1 focused attention on the engineering utility of these alloys. It was recognized at an early date that the metallographic structures developed in the aluminum bronzes were similar to those developed in steels, both in the annealed and the rapidly cooled state. Most investigators have been concerned with the acicular, martensitic-like structure formed from the ß solid solution upon rapid quenching; the transformation of the ß under equilibrium cooling to a lamellar eutectoid having been relatively neglected. With the introduction in 1930 by Davenport and Bain2 of the isothermal transformation technique for studying eutectoidal decompositions, a new field was opened. Although an enormous amount of work has since been done on the isothermal transformation of steel, study of structurally analogous systems has been almost totally overlooked. The outstanding exception was the prize-winning paper† of Smith and Lindlief3 who investigated the decomposition of the ß phase in copper-aluminum alloys by isothermal methods. This was followed in 1934 by Wasserman's reviews of available information on analogous transformations in eutectoid alloys. Since that time no comprehensive study of isothermally transformed eutectoids analogous to steel has appeared, although many valuable contributions have been made to an understanding of the structures developed in such systems. Important papers have been published by Kurdjumow, Gridnew and co-workers, 5-17 Obinata,18,19 Greninger,20,21 and others .22.28 The work to be described in this paper was an out-growth of preliminary studies on the isothermal transformation of a eutectoid aluminum bronze, after it became apparent that the alloy under study was reacting somewhat differently than the similar alloy used by Smith and Lindlief. PRELIMINARY EXPERIMENTS The material used in this study was a high purity aluminum bronze especially prepared by Ampco Metal, Inc. It analyzed: Copper-88.o7 pct, Aluminum-11.89 Oct, Iron-0.02 pct, Manganese-0.01 pct, Others-Balance. Although some disagreement exists on the exact composition of the eutectoid, this alloy was believed to be of essentially eutectoid composition even though some pro-eutectoid* delta particles existed in the microstructure of furnace cooled specimens. Specimens transformed isothermally at temperatures slightly below the eutectoid showed relatively large amounts of pre-eutectoid delta, but as will be shown later, this results

THERMAL expansion coefficients of a uranium were originally reported' on the basis of X-ray diffraction measurement of lattice constants at 25°, 300°, and 650°C. These data have been reproduced by Katz and Rabinowitch.' CuK radiation had been used in this work, with consequent crowding of the patterns. Considerable overlap of the back-reflection lines was observed as the temperature was raised. Subsequent reexamination of the data led to the conclusion that errors had resulted from failure to obtain unequivocal indexing of the high angle reflections at elevated temperatures. The measurements have been repeated, using FeK radiation, which provided sufficient dispersion to assure proper indexing of the reflections, at each temperature level. The unit cell dimensions were re-determined at ten temperatures, from 25" to 650°C. Schuch and Laquer easured the macroscopic contraction from room temperature down to —253°C, and reported a negative value from —210" to —253°C; they suggested the possibility of the occurrence of a phase change. In the present work, the lattice constants of uranium have been measured down to —253°C, to test this hypothesis. Filings were prepared from a single piece of pure uranium bar stock. They were carefully cleaned with a magnet and pickled in nitric acid to remove traces of iron from the file. They were then annealed at 600°C in a sealed evacuated silica tube. The annealed filings were pickled in strong nitric acid to remove any oxide layer, washed in water and alcohol, quickly dried, and sealed in evacuated thin-walled silica capillary tubes. If properly sealed, the sample could be heated to the a-ß transforination temperature without significant buildup of the diffraction pattern of oxide. The high temperature X-ray diffraction camera was modified from the design of Hume-Rothery and Reynolds.' The thermocouple used to record the specimen temperature was calibrated from lattice-constant measurements of a standard silver specimen, using the Hume-Rothery and Reynolds values for silver over the temperature range from 25" to 700°C. Temperatures were reproducible to 210°C. Temperatures to —210°C were attained by passing precooled gas over the sample. On the basis of data obtained from microscopic examination, melting observations, cooling curves, X-ray analyses, and resistance measurements, phase diagrams have been proposed for the Th-Cb and Th-Ti alloy systems. Both are simple eutectic systems and have no terminal solid solubility or intermediate phases. The eutectic between thorium and columbium occurs at a composition of about 8 wt pct Cb and a temperature of 1435°C. The Th-Ti eutectic occurs at 1190°C at the composition 12 wt pct Ti. No change was observed in the transformation temperature of thorium in either system or in the titanium transformation. RECENT study of thorium and its alloys has been promoted because of the possibility of employing this metal in nuclear reactors. Their corrosion resistant properties, nuclear characteristics, and high melting points put columbium and titanium among the many metals being employed in the study of thorium alloys. Since a knowledge of the phase relationships would be important in the application of such an alloy, investigations were undertaken to propose phase diagrams for the Th-Cb and Th-Ti systems. Experimental Procedures Thorium metal sponge was specially prepared for use in this investigation. Carbon in a quantity less than 0.04 wt pct was the principal impurity. There was also less than 0.01 pct each of iron, calcium, zinc, aluminum, and nitrogen in the thorium. Columbium, both as a powder and sheet metal, was obtained from the Fansteel Metallurgical Corp. The manufacturer's specifications indicated that the metal contains less than 1 wt pct total impurities. An analysis of the metal showed approximately 0.18 pct C in the powder and less than 0.05 pct C in the sheet. The titanium used was commercial sponge, reported to be 99.5 pct Ti. An analysis showed that this metal contained 0.2 pct Fe. Preparation of Alloys—Since the metals used in this investigation are reactive and might become contaminated on melting in a refractory crucible, the alloys were prepared by arc melting. The titanium sponge was employed in the form of small lumps while the columbium additions were made either as pressed pellets of powder or as clippings from sheet. The alloying material and the thorium sponge were melted together under argon in conventional arc melting equipment employing a tungsten electrode and a water cooled copper crucible.

The density changes that occurred on annealing cold-worked poly crystalline molybdenum, over the temperature range of 870" to 1630 SC, were determined. Increases in density were observed for recovery and the beginning of recrystallization. An initial decrease in density was observed during re-crystallization. A second decrease in density was observed after recrystallization was completed, as the microstructure changed from columnar grains to equiaxed gvains Both decreases in density were associated with an increase in gain boundary area to volume ratio. The second decrease in density was observed in the annealing range that immediately precedes secondary recrystallization as reported in the literature VARIOUS techniques have been used to identify the recovery, recrystallization, and grain growth processes that occur when cold-worked metals are annealed. As early as 1928 work was conducted that indicated measurable density changes occur when cold-worked single crystals of brass are annealed.' More recently, work by Murphy exhibited a corre- lation of density with microstructural changes observed on annealing cold-worked polycrystalline a brass.2 Other investigators have performed similar work on a brass and copper.324 In reviewing the literature, it was apparent that density work had been limited to fcc materials. Therefore, it was the purpose of this investigation to determine the density changes that accompany annealing the cold-worked bcc material, molybdenum. Two degrees of cold work, 30 and 90 pct reduction of cross-sectional area by rolling, were selected for this study. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE High-purity vacuum arc-cast molybdenum was used in this study, the principal impurity being carbon in the amount of 80 ppm. The final rolling reductions were made at 1200°C in grooved rolls to provide 5/8-in.-diam rod. Density specimens 0.500 in. diam by 1.5 in. long were machined from the bar stock. The specimens were ground to the final dimensions to provide a smooth surface. Density measurements were made using a hydrostatic technique similar to that used by ~urphy.' This type of equipment permitted weighing in liquid immediately after the air weighing. During each weighing the temperature of the air and liquid was controlled to within 0.0l°C. This was accomplished by sealing the analytical balance in an air-tight brass chamber and surrounding it by an insulated wooden case. In 1915, H. A. Guess, Vice President of American Smelting & Refining Co., in charge of its Mining Department, learned that the Anglo-Newfoundland Development Co., Ltd., a pulpwood and paper-mill enterprise, had found upon its large concession in Newfoundland, and had opened up by shaft to the third level and some drifting, a lenticular orebody indicating about 100,000 tons, as an extremely fine-grained sulfide ore, averaging about 0.05 oz. Au, 4 oz. Ag, 1.5 per cent Cu, 10 per cent Pb, 18 per cent Zn; and that having sent parcels of this ore to Minerals Separation, Ltd., and various other metallurgical testing concerns without obtaining any success in commercial separations thereof, had discontinued work thereon and let the workings fill. Mr. Guess wrote to the general manager of that company and obtained a few hundred pounds of the typical ore, which he sent to his company's metallurgical testing laboratory at Flat River, Mo., outlining various flotation tests desired thereon, in an endeavor to obtain separation into a commercial lead concentrate and a zinc concentrate. But the art of flotation had not then progressed far enough to treat such ore, the galena and zinc blende being so fine grained that grinding to about 300 mesh was required to release the mineral particles in their gangue. Mr. Guess had flotation and other tests continued upon this ore from time to time with whatever new reagents and flotation devices were evolved as time went on, and finally, in 1925, he succeeded in effecting in his company's testing plant, then at Wallace, Idaho, separations into lead concentrates and zinc concentrates of satisfactory commercial grade. Mr. Guess then proceeded to unwater, examine and sample the property and made with the owners a partnership operating agreement upon the mine itself and a considerable area surrounding it, and in the early summer of 1926 began to prospect for additional orebodies, utilizing for such prospecting geophysical methods under the direction of Hans Lundberg, methods which up to that time had been little used in mining in the western hemisphere. At the beginning of the war, about 13 years ago, a conference was called in Washington to lay plans for pooling the coals of the United States. A careful review of the various systems of classification then extant showed none well adapted to the needs of coal pooling. The system of Tidewater pools then adopted, using numbers to distinguish one pool from another, was based on typical coals of different localities. At that time, the writer undertook the preparation of such a practical classification. Aside from drawing on his experience of over 20 years in the coal fields of the United States, reaching from the Pacific Coast and the Rio Grande to Rhode Island, he first examined and carded all of the large collection of coals in glass jars made by and for M. R. Campbell. Next, he carded all of the descriptions of coals he could find in the U. S. Geological Survey bulletins and elsewhere, as well as practical tests of coals by the Navy and other organizations and then took account of every published coal analysis of the U. S. Geological Survey and U. S. Bureau of Mines. A study of this information, involving thousands of recomputations, led to the presentation of a paper on "A Use Classification of Coal" before this Institute at the Chicago meeting, September, 1919. That classification was unique (1) in a classification based on "standard coal" which included moisture, but used standardized ash, sulfur and nitrogen, (2) in using physical properties to distinguish the major classes or orders, (3) in recognizing British thermal unit values in the minor subdivision, (4) in the large number of classes recognized (thirty-six), (5) in proposing mineral names for all classes, (6) in proposing a letter code for the several classes for practical use, (7) in proposing a code for expressing what has commonly been called "grade" of the coal, the grade code to be combined with the rank code to designate and describe a coal. The writer still thinks that the principles then offered, though not necessarily the exact proposals, are valid and desirable in any practical classification. Harry HaRkness Stoek, whose sudden death on March 1,1923, was a great shock to his friends in all park of the country, was a man of remarkable personal characteristics and mental ability. Through an acquaintance with him of nearly 35 years, during 12 yeam of which I was intimately associated with him both in business and socially, I learned to appreciate his many high qualities, his strict adherence to high professional and social ideals, and his lovable traits of character. In this appreciation I was joined by every one who was thrown in close personal contact with him. He was a conscientious student, not given to hasty judgments, but when he formed an opinion he was positive in upholding it. At the same time, he was most courteous and kindly in combatting that which he believed was erroneous. In fact, I never knew a person of his attainments more modest, forceful and kindly, or one who had a keener sense of clean humor. In his private life,he was a devoted husband and father, a consistent communicant and worker in the Episcopal Church, and was charitable in all things. In fact, his whole life was marked by helpfulness to others and a determined and successful effort to "make the world better by his having lived in it." Doctor Stoek was born in Washington, D. C., Jan. 16, 1866. His early education was obtained in the public schools of that city and he graduated from the Central High School in the first class to graduate from a high school in Washington. He entered Lehigh University in 1883, graduated in 1887 with the degree of Bachelor of Science, and after a year of post-graduate study in mining and metallurgy he received the degree of Engineer of Mines. During the summer vacation in 1885, he served as an assistant in the Department of Mineralogy in the National Museum at Washington, and during the summer of 1887 acted as U. S. Government inspector of dredging on the Tharnes River, Connecticut. From June, 1888, to January, 1900, he was assistant engineer for the Susquehanna Coal Co., at Wilkes-Barre, Pa. From January, 1890, to June, 1893, he was Instructor in Mining, Metallurgy and Geology at Lehigh University, and had charge of all courses in mining and metdlurgical design, and the visits of students to mines and metallurgical

The metallurgical fuel of Colorado, Utah, and New Mexico has been a Veiny tardy member in the caravan of western industrial progress. The history of western coke has naturally been closely related to the development of the metallurgy of iron and steel and the precious metals, in the State of Colorado. It was at Leadville, with a population of 300 in 1877, that the Sentinel was published by Richard S. Allen. The Sentinel gave very full accounts of the various mineral discoveries at the new town of Leadville, which found their way to the more widely circulated journals of the East, and attracted the attention of many people. At the close of 1878, a census slowed a total of 5040 persons. The first smelter was established in 1877, at Malta, two miles from Leadville, by A. R. Meyer, but was not successful. It was succeeded by the Harrison Reduction Works, in 1878. The La Plata began with one furnace in June, 1878, and in 1879 had four furnaces in active operation. These furnaces used charcoal for fuel, and, because of hot tops, suffered a tremendous loss in lead and silver. This difficulty was overcome by the erection of 50 single-bank 10-ft. beehive ovens at Crested Butte, Colo., in 1880. The slack coal sent to these ovens was very pure, and yielded a coke carrying as little as 4.5 per cent. ash. Among the pioneers in the Leadville district were Grant, Eddy, James, Billings, Eiler, and Dickson. To these men the West owes the present expansion of its mining industry, and the erection of metallurgical processes for the treatment of precious metals. On Mar. 1, 1876, Pueblo was connected to the Atchison, Topeka & Sank Fe by the Pueblo & Arkansas Valley branch. The first smelter was erected in Pueblo by Mather and Geist. This modest plant grew into the immense Pueblo Smelting and Refining Co., now a part of the American Smelting and Refining Co. Coke for these small furnaces was made from unwashed Engleville coal, in 186 single-bank 12-ft. ovens at El Moro, in the Trinidad district, and it was not uncommon for the percentage of ash to exceed the percentage of fixed carbon in the coke. Records of coal in Colorado begin only a few years before the Civil War. In 1859 Macomb reported beds of lignite on both sides of Galisteo Creek, and in the foothills of the Placer Mountains, a place where an outburst and overflow-of trap had changed the lignite into bright, hard anthracite.1 The Union Pacific Railroad sent Joseph T. Hodge to investigate the coal deposits in the Rocky Mountains, close to the projected line, in the fall of 1863. He was told of coal on South Boulder and Rock Creeks, and that somewhere on Lodge Pole Creek it was being worked for supplying fuel for stage stations; a bed was also reported seven miles north of the stage road between Laporte and Latham. It was only in the vicinity of Denver that coal mines were being worked to any extent; these openings were on Coal Creek about 22 miles north of the town, said to have been opened in. 1860. The coal was used by the smiths with ,difficulty and slacked badly on exposure., Some coke was made from one of the seams, the coke being preferred to the raw coal by smiths. Another district was opened along South Boulder Creek, about two and a half miles from the base of the Rocky Mountains, two mines being worked to supply the Denver market.2 Hayden reported a large bed of coal at Golden in 1861 and of having seen a similar one in 1862 about 65 miles east of Pikes Peak, and in 1866, he saw large beds on Rock Creek 16 to 19 miles from Golden. In 1867 he saw the Belmont or Marshall's mines opened in 1863 on South Boulder Creek, which he said was the finest exhibition of coal in the state. The next one was the Murphy mine, on Ralston Creek, five miles north of Golden. A mine was also being worked near Canon City at that time.3 The coal at Golden was being worked in 1864.4 In 1867 the coal mined at Golden was being used in a firebrick' works. At Canon City and other places on the waters of Arkansas River, coal was being mined for use in the valley towns, bringing $5.00 per ton at the mines.5

INTRODUCTION For a number of reasons, the mineral processing industry has been slow to adopt significant automation of its processes. Most ore grinding operations can be operated manually so the pressure for automation to run the process has not been there. Furthermore, many plants had proven over years of operation that manual operation would produce a profit, so why automate? Until recently, the instrumentation necessary for automation of the grinding process was not available. All this has now changed, however. Increasing costs for labor, fuel, power, grinding media, reagants, and capital equipment have not been matched by the market price of the finished product. This cost-price squeeze has made it mandatory to reduce operating costs and improve the efficiency of the process to remain profitable. A number of other factors have added to the direct operating cost to make the problem even worse. These include environmental pressures to conserve natural resources and reduce smelter stack emissions; increased competition--especially from developing countries, varying economic conditions, stockpiling, governmental controls, and to top it all off, lower grade ore bodies. Although many of these other influences are good overall, they take their toll in cost per ton of delivered product. Fortunately, many operators are finding the solution to the cost-price squeeze in instrumentation and process control. Automated processes yield tighter spec. products, require less operating labor, produce more product from a given plant, and reduce unit cost by increasing process efficiency. The plant manager has a "handle" on the plant through process control so that he can change operating modes as economics dictate by changing the set point of some process controllers. He can even respond to economic conditions by switching control strategies from one that maximizes production to one that maximizes recovery, or minimizes unit cost, etc. This has all been made possible by the advent of on-line analytical instruments and practical process control computers. On-stream particle size (1), x-ray, and silica analyzers are now available and in use in many plants. Digital computer hardware and software has become practical so operators can use it without trying to become computer experts. Members of the Institute who were present at the Amenia, N. Y., meeting, in October, 1877, will remember their visit to the hematite mines, just west of the village of Amenia, and some of them may perhaps recall the deposit of carbonate ore south of the opening made for the hematite. The smelting of this carbonate during the last few months, has produced an iron that seems worthy of being brought to your notice. A little more than a year ago, at the Wassaie Furnace, Dutchess County, N. Y., we made a few hundred tons of iron from a mixture of two-thirds ram carbonate and one-third Chateaugay ore, hoping that it would be suitable for steel purposes, but as the iron showed phosphorus 0.189 per cent., it, was not offered. This iron looked well and seemed quite strong, and gave good results in malleable castings; but no special tests of strength were made. About February 1st, of this year, we began using two-thirds roasted carbonate, and one-third Chateaugay, and noticing that the iron mas stronger than usual, we had two samples tested, which showed tensile strength of 32,014 and 34,176 pounds per square inch. After our stock of Chateaugay ore was exhausted, me put on one-third ram carbonate with the two-thirds of roasted carbonate, and the first test made of the iron, showed 40,008 pounds per square inch. The three tests given above were made by Mr. A. J. Copp and Mr. E. B. Manning, of the Phoenix Furnace, Millerton, N. Y., on a machine of Riehle Bros., Philadelphia. Since these tests were made, they have broken samples made with all carbonate ore as follows: 39,669, 40,816, 41,882, 42,281, 39,902, and 40,130 pounds per square inch. A test taken from the same bed of iron as the last-mentioned (40,130), was broken by Mr. A. Blass, at Irondale Furnace, showing 40,151 pounds per square inch. A sample broken on the Riehle Bros. machine, at Stevens Institute, under direction of Professor R. H. Thurston, showed 40,000 pounds per square inch. Another sample was broken by Professor Thurston on his torsion machine, and gave torsion 7", and tensile strength of 44,500 pounds. And

Most of the drilling and development during the year, as in the past several years, was in the Indiana portion of the Illinois Basin, but increasing interest was apparent in the old Trenton area, for possibilities of further production in the Trenton formation and the underlying St. Peter sandstone. Interest in all other portions of the state was at a new peak, since many areas have never been prospected. Natural gas production continued to drop during 1938, since new discoveries have not been able to keep pace with the rapid decline in older areas. Oil production increased considerably, chiefly through the discovery of new fields. Older fields contributed about the same quantity of oil during 1938 as during the preceding year. There were 159 wells completed in Indiana during 1938, an increase of 25 over the preceding year. Of these, 48 were oil wells, 41 were gas, and '70 failed to find commercial production. Forty-three, or about 20 per cent, were wildcat. Six of these were productive—three oil wells and three gas wells. Thirty-nine wells on which operations started during the year had riot been completed by Dec. 31. Fourteen others were temporarily abandoned, with the possibility that several will be drilled to completion in the near future. A new oil field (Heusler) was discovered in May 1938, in sees. 1 and 12, T. 7 S., R. 12 W., Posey County. Production was found in the Waltersburg (Upper (Chester) sandstone at a depth of approximately 1775 ft. At the close of the year, Heusler field had nine producing wells and two drilling. The Point township area, Posey County, near the confluence of the Wabash and Ohio Rivers, held promise of good production from the McClosky lime, but offsets to the, discovery well had only shows of oil. The discovery well declined rapidly in production arid was finally plugged. In the Oaktown field, Knox County, a wildcat came in with a good flow of gas, extending the field to the east, and proving considerably more acreage. The thermal coefficients of linear expansion for several stainless steels have been determined over the temperature range from —300° to 1000°F. The steels studied include types 301, 304, 316, 347, 310 and 330. This wide selection of compositions allows an insight into the effects of austenite stability and alloy content on the expansion characteristics. THE recent increased use of materials in low temperature applications has created a field for which the properties of austenitic iron, chromium, nickel alloys are particularly suited. Tensile and impact values of stainless steels at subzero temperatures have been made available in the technical literature but, as yet, little information has been published with respect to expansion characteristics. In order to supply this need, a study was made of several of the more common compositions. Those selected were types 301, 304, 316, 347, 310 and 330 stainless steel. Both the mean and instantaneous coefficients of linear expansion were determined over the temperature range from —300°F to 1000°F. Procedure The materials used were commercial grades with the exception of type 301 which was made in a 10# high frequency furnace. The compositions are listed in table I. All steels were given an anneal at 1950°F for 30 min and water quenched prior to machining the expansion specimens. Expansion readings were taken on specimens 0.250 in. in diam by 4.000 in. long with a fused quartz tube expansion apparatus similar to that described by Hidnert and Souder.1 Temperature measurements were made with a chromel-alurnel thermocouple calibrated for use at subzero temperatures. A bath of propane was used for temperatures from —300° to —100°F and one of alcohol from —100°F to room temperature. These baths were contained in large mouthed Dewar flasks and cooled to the desired temperature levels by passing liquid nitrogen through glass cooling coils placed in the flasks. The baths were stirred constantly for temperature equalization and were heated by immersing metal rods which were replaced frequently enough to give a heating rate of approximately 150°F per hr. A resistance wound furnace was used for heating from room temperature to 1000°F and throughout this range rates of about 450°F per hr were maintained. IN the late 1920's rotary drills began to replace the churn drills in the petroleum industry, but until the middle 1940's the churn drill was the only widely accepted means of drilling large-diameter blastholes for quarry operations. The Calcite plant of the Michigan Limestone Div., U. S. Steel Corp., was one of the first to experiment with rotary drills for quarry blasthole drilling, and the first to employ compressed air on a fully rotary rig to cool the bit and raise the cuttings to the collar of the blasthole. The Calcite plant operates a limestone quarry near Rogers City, Mich., in the northern part of the lower Michigan peninsula. The formation quarried, a portion of the middle Devonian series, is the Dundee limestone, which is uniform, seldom massive, and characterized by definite bedding planes. The dip is southeast, 40 ft to the mile. Quarry faces vary from 20 to 116 ft in height. Vertical blastholes are used entirely, from three to five rows of holes being drilled parallel to the working face, spaced 18 ft apart with 18-ft burden and drilled 6 to 8 ft below shovel grade. Quarry operations coincide with the navigation season on the Great Lakes, as the bulk of the stone is transported by lake carrier. The normal operating season runs from April to December, the remaining time being devoted to stripping operations and plant and equipment maintenance. In the followirig discussion drilling rates mentioned refer to overall drilling time and include all operations such as moving from hole to hole, penetration and extraction of tools, and routine maintenance. Time consumed by such factors as power delays and major machine repair is not included in drilling time unless otherwise stated. Figures cover only operations at this one plant in the formation mentioned. Needless to say, a very different set of figures could be obtained in a different formation. However, the comparison of footage obtained with churn drills and rotary rigs in this particular formation has been used as an indication of what might be the expected performance of rotary rigs in other formations. Prior to 1950 the bulk of the blasthole drilling at the Calcite plant was done by electrically powered churn drills. Both crawler and wheel-mounted rigs were used. These machines, which mounted a 22-ft drill stem of 4½ in. diam and a spudding type of bit 2 to 4 ft long, drilled a hole of 5 ?-in. diam. Average drilling rate of these rigs in the Rogers City formation was 8 % ft per hr. In 1946 one of the first rotary blasthole drills offered to the quarry industry was put into use on an experimental basis. This machine, known as the Sullivan Model 56 blasthole drill, Fig. 1, was on 16-in. crawler pads and electrically powered at 440 v. The drill bit, a Hughes Tri-Cone roller bit of 5?-in. diam, Type OSC, was threaded into the end of the 4-in. square hollow drill rod or stem. These drill rods were 20 ft long with female threads on one end and male on the other to allow for addition of the desired number of rods for drilling holes of various depth. Rods were handled by a single drum hoist geared to the main drive motor and racked by a 30-ft derrick or mast when not in use. The cable from the hoist drum fed through a crown block on the top of the derrick back to the water swivel mounted in the top end of the drill stem in use. This cable remained attached during drilling operations and was used to hoist the tool string from the hole. Down pressure was applied to the tool string by means of a pair of 4-in. diam hydraulic cylinders acting on the drill chuck holding the drill rod. The first chuck consisted of flat jaws which gripped the flat sides of the stem. These jaws were controlled by set screws forcing them into contact with the drill stem. As these set screws had to be loosened and tightened by hand with each stroke of the hydraulic feed cylinders, there was great delay. For this reason the semi-automatic chuck was developed which automatically gripped the stem on the downward stroke but released for retraction of the hydraulic feed cylinders. Rotation was imparted to the tool string by a rotary table acting on the chuck and geared to the main drive motor through a separate gear train and clutch. A positive displacement water pump, mounted on the drill, fed water through a system of pipes and hose into the water swivel mounted on the top of the drill rod and through the rod and bit, washing the drill cuttings to the collar of the hole. Where water was scarce, provision was made to settle out the cuttings coming from the collar of the hole and re-use the water. Where water was abundant the stream coming from the hole was wasted. Drilling rate with this machine was about 20 ft per hr and bit life 1600 ft of hole. While this rate was more than twice that obtained with the churn drills employed, the problem of water supply and drill cuttings disposal rendered the machine impractical from an operating standpoint. Consequently it was used only in that part of the operation for which water was easily supplied, when the character of the formation made it least difficult to wash cuttings away from the collar of the hole. In October 1949 it was suggested that drill cuttings be removed by compressed air, long used for this purpose on pneumatic drills, and collected at the collar by suction. MANY investigations are reported in the literature on the age hardening of Al-Mg-Zn alloys but most of them are concerned mainly with mechanical property changes. The present investigation was started to determine the structural changes in an AlMgZn alloy. The alloy composition was chosen in the existing phase diagram" so as to lie on the quasi-binary section Al-(AlZn)Mg Actually, it was found that the diagram as published was inexact at the lower temperatures and that the phase in equilibrium with aluminum at the lower temperatures is not the ternary compound. Technique The alloy used for the investigation was prepared from high purity materials and the resulting composition as determined by chemical and spectro-graphic analysis was: Zn, 6.17 pct; Mg, 2.13 pct; CU, 0.03 pct; Si, 0.009 pct; Fe, 0.005 pct; and the remainder, aluminum. An ingot -in. thick was cast, homogenized, hot and cold-rolled to strip 0.064-in. thick for dilato-metric and powder work, and to foil 0.005-in. thick for single crystal work. Solution treatment temperature for all specimens was 475°±5°C for periods of at least 1 hr, either in air furnaces or lead baths. Aging was done in oil or Pb-Bi baths controlled to within ±3°C. The aging was investigated at the following temperatures: room (30°), 130°, ZOO0, 260°, and 300°C. For the dilatometric study, the length changes were measured continuously, at temperature, using strips of alloy 10 in. long, shaped as channels to eliminate undesirable deflection due to bending. To compensate for thermal expansion and contraction due to the variations in the temperature of the aging baths, the dilatometers were built of the same alloy as the one being tested, with the same shape and size, but with material fully annealed. Gages on which 0.0005 in. could be read and 0.0001 in. estimated were used to measure the dilation. Length changes were also measured at room temperature. Strips approximately 10 in. long were solution-treated, quenched, and measured in a supermicrome-ter in which 0.0001 in. could be read and 0.00001 in. estimated. The specimens were immediately aged for a given time, remeasured, and then the cycle was repeated, including the solution treatment. The error of measurement with this technique was somewhat larger, but the results confirmed those obtained by continuous measurements. The sheet used for the dilatometric work was checked to determine grain orientation. Both X-rays and etching methods revealed a rather coarse grain size but only a negligible amount of preferred orientation. Thus, volume changes calculated from length changes are not invalidated by preferential orientation effects. Pieces of the sheet used for the dilatometric work were also used for the metal -lographic work. Filings for the powder X-ray study were produced from a homogenized piece of sheet. These filings were magnetically purged of iron, screened to 200 mesh, sealed in a Pyrex tube containing an argon atmosphere, and solution-treated. When quenching, the glass tube was broken, so that the powder dropped directly into cold water. After drying with alcohol, the powder was sealed into capillary tubes containing an argon atmosphere and then aged for the required times. In spite of all these precautions the three strongest lines of a( Al2o) appeared in all patterns, and were used as internal standards. By the use of these standards, accurate corrections for film shrinkage were obtained. For the back reflection patterns, annealed nickel powder was mixed with the specimen to act as internal standard. The results of three-phase relative permeability tests on nine water-wet consolidated Berea sandstone samples are presented as composite ternary diagranls showing isoperms of oil, water and gas. Capillary pressure control was exercised over the flow of gas and oil in the presence of water. The water saturations ranged from 17 to 71 per cent pore volume. A method of calculating both the oil and water permeabilities of a three-phase system from the easily measured gas relative permeability is presented. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE AND RESULTS A renewed interest has been shown in three-phase relative permeability as a result of recent developments involving underground combustion processes, steam injection, and other multiphase displacement processes. The experiments and results described here involved simultaneous flow of oil and gas in consolidated Berea sand with brine present as the wetting phase. Gas and oil relative permeabilities were measured on nine cores with CaC12 brine present as the wetting phase in saturations ranging from 17 to 71 per cent. The average residual liquid saturation of the cores was approximately 20 per cent. In order to make certain that brine was the wetting phase, the test cores were saturated with brine before contact with hydrocarbons. As an added precaution to avoid having oil displace brine from the wetting position as a result of changing wettability, each core was only used twice, i.e., first with a fixed percentage of brine and then for a gas-oil permeability determination with no brine present. The results, therefore, are presented as composite ternary diagrams representing the flow tests on nine individual cores having very similar properties. All tests were made using a modification of the capillary pressure techniquc described elsewhere. The effective oil permeability was measured before gas was introduced using a very small pressure gradient (a few centimeters of oil). This determination was made without selectively wet barriers in contact with the core. The cores were then placed between capillary barriers and gas-oil relative permeability curves obtained. The capillary barriers had been made water repellent with a silicone treatment. In determining gas-oil-water relative permeability in this fashion, control was exercised over the capillary pressure existing between the gas and oil. No control was exercised over the pressure difference existing between the oil and water. Athough an equal pressure gradient was applied to the gas and the oil phases, this pressure gradient does not exist in the water phase. Since the pressure gradient across the core was always much less than the displacement pressure of the fully saturated core, the pressure gradient can have caused only a very slight distortion of the oil-water interfaces. This slight distortion of the oil-water interfaces had a negligible effect on the validity of the oil permeabilities measured. The oil permeability, measured in the presence of water but with no gas present, was in every case equal. within experimental error, to the gas permeability of the gas-oil system when the oil saturation was the same as that of the water. Gas and oil relative permeabilities were plotted as a function of total liquid saturation. It was found that the gas relative permeability curves obtained on cores with brine present were identical with those obtained on the same cores with no brine present. The denominator for calculating oil relative permeabilities was the permeability found by extrapolation to infinite mean pressure (A la Klinken-berg). Fig. 1 illustrates gas-oil relative permeability results obtained on a typical core. The solid permeability curves represent the experimental data.
