RECENT jig practice has shown such marked departures from the pronouncements of the textbooks, particularly as to particle size recovered and size range of feed, as to make it desirable to reexamine the mechanism of jig action. This paper presents the results of such a study. The general conclusions of the paper are: I. A jig bed is a bi-functioned as well as bi-parted body. The upper layer comprises a plastic stream moving slowly in a substantially horizontal direction from feed lip to tail board. It serves to rough out tailing and light middling and to pick up heavy middling and lift it out of the jig box. The lower layer acts as the ultimate separating means by absorbing concentrate and rejecting heavy middling. 2. The separating function of the lower layer is performed in three definitely different ways, depending upon the relative sizes of the grains presented to it and those composing it. EXPERIMENTAL The experimental work consisted of close and long-continued visual observations of operating beds in a plunger jig, eccentric driven, and in determinations of the settling rates of various metal spheres through a quartz bed under various conditions of operation. Falling velocities were measured by an ingenious method devised by A. C. Dorenfeld, a student in the Mining Department at Columbia. Spheres of different metallic alloys, Y8-in. diameter, were cast with a short piece of fine copper wire frozen in to serve for suspension. A short piece of black cotton thread was looped to the top of the wire to serve as an indicator. The set-up for a test is shown in Fig. I. The thread should be boiled, if necessary, to make it freely water absorbent. The piece of clean plate glass D is supported rigidly at the proper height in a vertical position. The white scale E is similarly supported behind the glass. At the beginning of a test, D is filmed with water by holding it (best with clean rubber finger cots) under running tap water. It is then clamped in approximate position and C, already wet, is laid across it and drawn straight and vertical with the upper end at or near the top of D, and the ball A slightly above the top of the expanded bed. The water film holds the string to the glass. For a test the string is released, its upper end position noted just after the top of the ball becomes submerged, when the corresponding time is read, and thereafter simultaneous readings of position and time are taken as desired. Results of the visual studies of the bed are given at the pertinent places in the following discussion. Results of the settling tests are summarized in Figs. 2 and 3. DEFINITIONS The name bed as used herein refers to the entire mixture of solids and water filling the jig box. A layer is a stratum of a bed composed of particles of substantially the same specific gravities. A granular product is long-range when it approximates a crushed or ground product limited as to upper size only; a shorlrange product is one closely sized. FOR many years the mining of coal and other minerals occurring in sedimentary formation has been planned according to information obtained by diamond drilling. Placer mines have used churn drills for sampling and estimating deposits, and some metal mines have used the method either wholly or in part. The diamond drill method, therefore, although not entirely new, has come into more prominence in the last few years. Several large-scale developments now being planned or in the production stage have used this method in varying degree. This paper will describe the operations of the Howe Sound Exploration Co., Ltd. at Snow Lake, Manitoba, where a gold mine was developed and equipped for mining and milling wholly on the basis of diamond drilling results. The property has been in operation nearly 3 years, so that results can be compared with the estimates and assumptions made from the diamond drilling. In developing the subject it is necessary to outline as briefly as possible the normal method of mining, from discovery to production stage. Table I sets forth these various stages, the methods of financing, the percentage of total cost, and the relative time interval required for each section of the work. The plan presented in this table cannot be applied to all mining developments, but it gives a basis on which to work. In Stages 2 and 3 the investment is moderate, and if the property does not respond favorably the options or interests can be terminated. Stage 4 represents a sizeable investment, and it is more difficult to drop the property after this part of the operation is completed. Stages 2, 3, and 4 may be repeated several times by diflerent groups or companies before Stage 5 is reached, but when Stage 5 has been started the total capital investment must be provided and there can be no turning back. It will be noted that there is a total of 116 units of investment in the overall cost if one company proceeds with Stages 2, 3, 4, and 5 in order. Stage 4, however, consumes time which is important when markets are being considered. Bringing a property into production when metal prices are low is much more difficult than when the prices are high, and if this stage can be set aside production is attained more quickly. When Stage 4 is eliminated the total becomes 86 units of cost for Stages 2, 3, and 5, but an adjustment of 14 units must be added to Stage 5. These 14 units represent the useable value of Stage 4. Thus Stage 4 represents an investment of 30 units if carried on before Stage 5, but 14 units if included with Stage 5. This is accounted for by the fact that development work can be accomplished more cheaply under Stage 5, since everything that is done is planned on a production basis with permanent services. In diamond or churn drilling for the prospecting of ore bodies, two products can be used for quantitative analyses; i.e., the core and the cuttings, or sludge. Some operators prefer an assay of core; others insist that the sludge be sent for analysis. Both must recover the sludge for check samples or for assays if there is no core recovery for any particular section of the diamond-drill hole. The Freeport Sulphur Co. found that numerous cumbersome sludge boxes or barrels were inconvenient and delayed drilling. The sludge settled slowly in the ordinary shallow, rectangular diamond-drill boxes and its total removal from the container was difficult, time-consuming and unsatisfactory; and sampling of deposits of which the metal contents are easily concentrated, as in ores containing cinnabar, gold and silver, is subject to error if the boxes are not thoroughly cleaned. Mr. Charles Ballard, dredge superintendent at Freeport's operation at Grande Ecaille, Louisiana, developed a portable cone while he was in charge of prospecting a mercury property near Tonopah, Nevada, in 1940. Ballard later improved the design while the settler was being used at a manganese property in New Mexico. The operation is based on the "free settling" of comminuted particles in a quiescent liquid. The ordinary sludge box discharges over a lip 8 to 12 in. wide and consequently the water has sufficient velocity so that the discharge water is never clear. The cone settler used by Free-port Sulphur Co. discharges over the entire circumference, which gives a discharge ltp of 9 ft. in the size of cone used at the cinnabar and manganese prospects. Consequently, the velocity of the discharge water is slow enough so that all fine material settles and the discharge water is clear. When the drilling of a sample interval is complete, the sludge can be drawn off by the time the driller is ready to cut another sample. Thus, only one cone is needed per drill. The cone has been used by Freeport successfully in churn-drilling a manganese deposit, in diamond-drilling a mercury deposit, and in diamond-drilling a deposit of ore containing tin, copper, gold and silver. The cone is greatly superior to the old methods of collecting sludge and is now used on all Freeport drilling campaigns in the western states, both for surface and underground drilling. Fig. I shows the important details of a cone designed for average operating conditions, 30 in. in diameter and 36 in. high. Abnormal conditions may require some revisions in design. Fig. 2 shows a working drawing. A hose or pipe larger than the one used to convey water from the pump to the swivel head of the string of rods is connected to the stuffing box at the collar of a diamond-drill hole, The usual T-connection is used. It is not necessary to use a stuffing box if the top of the cone can be placed lower than the collar of the hole. Then the return water and cuttings can be made to flow by gravity. The Infrasizer Mk III, developed at the University of Toronto, is capable of sizing particles of a few pm to hundreds of pm according to particle terminal velocity, which is a function of particle density, size and shape. The factors limiting the performance of the Infrasizer Mk III have been presented and analyzed. It has been established theoretically and experimentally that the device has excellent potential as a laboratory instrument. The principle is applicable to a continuous production classifier, a prototype of which is now under development.

In classification of pulps bearing magnetized ferro-magnetic particles, depolarizing is of great importance. If size separation is to be effective, particles must be individual rather than in flocs. Depolarizing is also practiced in heavy medium separations in which ferrosilicon or magnetite is the medium. When particles of ferromagnetic material have been removed from a magnetic field, residual magnetism causes agglomeration. The term depolarizing refers to the operation of reducing or eliminating this residual magnetism and may thus be considered magnetic deflocculation. The terms demagnetizing and randomizing are also used.

The dihedral angle, formed by the intersection of three interfaces, is often determined by measuring a sample of apparent angles of intersection seen on a random plane of polish, then comparing the exerimental distribution of angles to the distribution calculated by Harker and Parker. Statistical tests show that the latter distribution does not satisfactorily describe the population from which samples are drawn. It is concluded that the major reason for this discrepancy is the presence of a range of dihedral angles in all specimens. When reasonable care is used experimentally, random measuring error is unimportant. It is shown that measurements made on dispersed second-phase inclusions are subject to a systematic error depending on inclusion size, which can be minimized by using adequate magnification. A dihedral angle, calculated from a sample of observed angles as though a unique dihedral angle were present, is termed an "effective dihedral angle". Experience has shown that "effective dihedral angles'' are reproducible quantities, useful for characterizing samples. Methods of determining an "effective dihedral angle", establishing its reliability, and making comparisons between samples are discussed. THE authors have recently reported measurements of the dihedral angle formed by liquid-lead inclusions lying in nickel grain boundaries.' Di- hedral angles were measured by the statistical method first employed by Harker and parker2 and used subsequently by many other workers.3"8 Since a relatively high degree of accuracy was necessary in the authors' experiments, the reliability of this method of dihedral-angle measurement was examined. Briefly, this method of measuring dihedral angles is usually performed as follows. A multiphase alloy is prepared, equilibrated under conditions which allow sufficient interface mobility to establish equilibrium, quenched to room temperature, then prepared for metallographic examination. A large number of observed angles, formed by the traces of grain boundaries and/or interphase boundaries on the plane of polish, are measured at high magnification. If all orientations of interfaces in the specimen are equally probable, Harker and parker2 showed that the population of observed angles is described by a distribution function containing a single parameter, the dihedral angle, 8. certain properties of the population, e.g., the mode or median, have been calculated from this distribution function in terms of the dihedral angle.3, 9 Thus, if the mode or median of a sample is identified with the corresponding property of the population, a unique value for the dihedral angle is determined. One defect in this procedure lies in identifying the properties of a sample of observed angles with the properties of the population from which they are drawn. If one were to proceed in a more rigorous fashion, it would be necessary to find a function of sample properties which is an estimator of the dihedral angle. Then by determining the distribution function for the estimator one could set limits on the value of the dihedral angle. The most apparent obstacle to this straightforward approach is the complexity of the distribution function assumed to describe the population. A simple on-stream particle-size analysis method is presented that leads to a bulk-property single-channel device; although the concept can be extended to multi-channel sizing information. The method is based on continuously measuring and comparing the percent solids in the sample stream and in an internal-reference stream containing only undersize particles. A semipermeable hydraulic system is used such that the particle mass concentration in the internal stream can vary, and is always proportional to the undersize particle mass concentration in the sample stream.

Accurate modeling of the semivariogram is an extremely important step in the geostatistical analysis of mineral deposits. Automatic fitting of a mathematical model is often possible but not necessarily desirable. Significant geologic and statistical information must be taken into account in the fitting process, which is not always available to the computer. Manual model fitting is, on the other hand, extremely time consuming. Interactive graphics are best suited to optimize the process. Many interactive methods are described, which are adapted to modeling semivariogram in one-, two-, or three- dimensional environments.

Flotation and adsorption studies of ilmenite with technical oleic acid, pure oleic acid, and mixtures of each of them with n-hexadecane have been conducted. From them it is concluded that the depression of ilmenite caused by a too long conditioning time is due to adsorption of the collector onto the fines produced by attrition in the conditioning cell, and that fuel oil is necessary for economic flotation of non-deslimed ilmenite ore. This beneficial effect of fuel oil is attributed to van der Waals forces, of the hydro-carbon chains.

BLAMEY STEVENS, Nogales, Ariz. (written discussion *).-This subject should be approached boldly from the purely physical standpoint. There are usually many known ways of making chemical deposits of any particular mineral and probably many more ways that are still unknown. With-physical-effects; .however, there-are, in-general, only one or two, or possibly three, ways that will pass muster before the physicist, when he realizes the geological conditions to be harmonized with the physical ones. Let us consider the second way that Mr. Taber describes: "It (the mineral matter transported in solution) may enter along a fracture, bedding plane, or similar passage, and, as it is deposited, force the wall rock apart, thus making room, for the growing vein," because it is the one Mr. Taber chooses for the great bulk of metalliferous veins. By "forcing the wall rock apart" Mr. Taber indicates that he means that the process of crystallization or-solidification of the mineral in the vein forces the walls apart. To prove this, he offers a great variety of geological evidence, which, from the physical standpoint, is entirely superficial. From the geological standpoint the evidence is the best to be had, but it is entirely negative and one single grain of really positive evidence will entirely offset it. In order to obtain a better insight into the pressure-volume relationship of reservoir rocks a theory of pore and rock bulk volume variations is presented. The theory is independent of the shape of the pores but is restricted to isotropic porous media built up of continuous homogeneous matrix material. The main conclusion obtained from this theory is that only three elastic constants and three viscous constants are required for describing pore and rock bulk volume variations if the porosity is explicitly introduced into the treatment. In addition, reasonable approximations are introduced for various types of reservoir rock, e.g., sandstones, limestones, and shales, which lead to further simplifications of the basic formulas. In consequence there is then a further reduction in the number of deformation constants which have to be determined experimentally. It is shown how measurements of these remaining deformation constants can be performed most conveniently. Finally the application of the theory to reservoir studies is discussed and the translation of experimental results obtained in the laboratory into reservoir behavior is considered. INTRODUCTION The decline of fluid pressure in connection with the withdrawal of fluid from an underground reservoir gives rise to a change in volume of both reservoir fluids and reservoir rock. The volume variation of the reservoir rock results in a decrease of both the pore volume and the total volume of the fluid-filled formation. Whereas the variation in volume of the reservoir fluids with pressure is usually known from PVT analysis, that in the volume of the porous medium is rarely measured, as it is considered of minor importance in reservoir engineering. Nevertheless, certain experimental results' suggest that in a number of cases the neglection of the variation in pore volume may introduce errors into material balance calculations of reservoirs producing above the bubble point. Only a few experimental results on the compressibility of porous rocks have been published. The compressibility of pure quartz and of calcite can be found in a paper by Adams and Williamson'. Botset and Reed' carried out some experiments on the compressibility of loose sands, while Carpenter and Spencer' measured the compressibility of a number of consolidated sandstones, which data were supplemented by Hughes and Cooke5. Hall' finally reported a number of experiments designed to study the influence of the porosity on the compressibility of oil-bearing formations, from which it appeared that, particularly in the low porosity range, the compressibility of the pore volume is important enough to be taken into account. Difficulties, however, arise in applying these experimental results to field cases. This is partly due to the fragmentary nature of the published data. Yet even if more complete data were available, the need for a theoretical background would be strongly felt. Such a background can be partially found in studies carried out by Biot,6,7 who published a theory of elastic deformations of porous materials and their influence on fluid displacement within the pores, by Lubinski8, who studied the stress distribution in an elastic porous medium neglecting pore compressibility, and by Gass-mann" who mathematically analysed the elasticity of packings of spheres. The contributions of Biot intro-duce a number of deformation constants which are impractical for reservoir rocks from an aspect of experi-mental determination. The Bureau of Mines, beset by political woes not of its own making, is struggling to maintain equilibrium as Congress is being made the focal point for repeated charges that the Bureau has "not done a very good job" of setting up and supervising coal mine health and safety standards approved last year by the Congress. Senator Harrison Williams (D- N.J.) is the latest to enter the arena. There are three primary plant nutrients-nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium--expressed in any fertilizer compound as percent N, percent P2O5, and percent K20, in that order. This article will be concerned with the first two. The chief source of P205 is phosphate rock. As found in the western states phosphate rock is essentially tricalcium phosphate-calcium fluoride (fluorpatite). As such, it is quite water insoluble. The principal phosphate fertilizer used is single superphosphate, produced by reacting sulfuric acid with phosphate rock in the proper proportions.
