An equation is deduced which correlates these forces and the influence of each force is discussed. The importance of the size of bubbles in a flotation cell is emphasized.

THE property of the Andes Copper Mining Co. is in the central part of the Republic of Chile, Province of Atacama, 147 km. (91.5 miles) eastward by rail from the port of Chañaral. At this point the Andean system is made up of two principal ranges. The mine is on the westerly slope of the outer, or western, range, at a mean elevation of 3250 m. (10,500 ft.). A meter-gage railroad extends from the company's port at Barquito, near Chañaral, to the reduction plant at Potrerillos. This road has a total length of 151 km. (94.0 miles), of which 93 km. (57.79 miles) are owned by the Andes Copper Mining Co. The remainder of the road is owned by the state. The company operates its trains over the portion of the road owned by the state, under an agreement with the Chilean Government. The mine is connected with the reduction plant by a meter-gage railroad, 10 km. (6.214 miles) long, which extends from the coarse ore bins at the metallurgical plant to the underground storage bins at the mine. Tunnels make up 60 per cent. of the total length of this railroad. As is characteristic of the Andean region in Chile, the topography of the locality is extremely rough, and a number of points near the mine have elevations of from 15,000 to 16,000 feet.

THIS lecture can best begin with a statement of the chief conclusion: The metallurgical industry will find profit in supporting fundamental research on dislocations. This support should be done both in their own laboratories and in universities. My lecture consists of an exposition of the basis for this conclusion. The experience on which I base it is drawn largely from two fields in solid state physics—one field is transistor electronics and the other is dislocation theory. At present the relationship of solid state physics to technology is different in these two fields. In electronics without question, the physics has led the technology. In metallurgy, on the other hand, the technology in the form of metallurgical art is far ahead of the fundamental science. In transistor electronics, physics has suggested and can still suggest previously unachieved combinations of matter that will have new and useful properties; that is, the physicist can make specific predictions. The physicist can also have some confidence that the predicted devices will actually come into existence in a matter of months or years and that they will live up to the predictions. In metallurgy, the physicist cannot to a comparable degree make predictions and have the same hope that they will lead to something new and valuable. There are a number of reasons for this difference. The first is simply historical. Transistor physics is young. It may be regarded as dating from the announcement of the transistor, in which case it is about four years old, or from the first real control of semiconductors as materials (this was accomplished largely by metallurgists, by the way) in which case it is about ten years old. Metallurgical art, on the other hand, is thousands of years old. There is no doubt that the advance of this art has been and will be hastened by a good fundamental understanding of the quantum theory of atomic phenomena. It, is too much to expect, however, that theory will soon catch up with the lead that practice has gained in a thousand years, and that theory will then point out specific pathways to better materials. It seems more probable that modern atomic theory will serve to interpret and organize information much as thermodynamics has done through phase diagrams. In this lecture, I shall emphasize an important feature common to both solid state electronics and to metallurgy. This common feature is the harmonizing principle that justifies discussing electronics and metallurgy as related topics in solid state physics. In both cases the important properties of the materials arise from imperfections. By imper- fections I mean deviations of the materials from perfect single crystals. The imperfections may be of many forms. From the point of view of utility they may be either good or bad, and a given type may be good or bad depending on circumstances. The technical material of my lecture will be divided into two parts. The first will be chiefly concerned with four types of imperfections in germanium crystals. The control of these imperfections makes possible the fabrication of useful electronic devices. A good example of such control is the junction transistor, which I shall discuss from this viewpoint later. The junction transistor, as some of you may have heard, can be used as an amplifier of electrical signals and in a number of respects surpasses what has hitherto been achieved with vacuum tubes. The second part of my technical material will be concerned with dislocations. For about fifteen years the theoretical physicist has had dislocations in mind as the most important kind of imperfection in metals. He has, however, until recently had experimental material of a highly speculative nature to back up his assertions. I am fortunate in the timing of this lecture to be able to describe some recent results that put dislocations on a far more definite basis than has been the case in the past. In fact there are now some experiments which reveal the characteristic properties of dislocations almost as clearly as experiments in transistor physics reveal the properties of holes and electrons, properties that I shall soon describe. It is this advance in the status of dislocations that emboldened me to make my initial assertion that the metallurgical industry will profit from supporting fundamental research on dislocations. Transistor Electronics In order to discuss imperfections in semiconductors, it is necessary to visualize a reference condition that may be regarded as perfect. In the cases of silicon and germanium, which find application in transistor electronics,' the perfect structure is the diamond structure shown in Fig. I. In this structure, each atom is surrounded by four neighbors with which it forms four covalent or electron-pair bonds. These bonds use all of the four valence electrons possessed by each of the silicon or germanium atoms. The electronic structure of the crystal is thus complete and perfect. A crystal of silicon or germanium with a perfect electron-pair bond structure would be an insulator, In order for electrical conduction to occur, it is necessary for imperfections to arise in the electronic structure. In this lecture, I shall discuss four possible imperfections whose symbols and relationships are indicated in Table I. We shall consider first, as an example, a crystal of silicon containing an arsenic atom as an impurity.

The use of point load test data by the authors to estimate rock mass cohesion is a very ingenious approach. It must be emphasized that this estimate is indeed only an estimate since the point load strength index employed to predict the uniaxial compressive strength (and subsequently predict the cohesion) is likewise only an estimate.

In the use of the apparatus purchased for the new chemical laboratories of the university, no piece has given us more satisfaction, or has been a greater success, than a new still which is the subject of this paper. In the designing of this still I had two definite objects in view ; one, the utilizing of steam from the large 60 horse-power boiler used in heating the building, and the other, a provision for making distilled water with gas, when steam from the heating-plant was not available. The still is encased in wrought-iron, with a lining of asbestos, and is provided with a float which automatically regulates the flow of water from the supply-pipe. It was made for me by G. J. M?rrle, Pforzheim, Germany, and was imported by Messrs. Eimer & Amend, of New York City. It is a beautiful piece of apparatus, and the workmanship is excellent in every detail. The essential parts of this apparatus will be understood by consulting the accompanying figures, but a few words of explanation may be appropriate. The still has a capacity of seven gallons, and is made of heavy copper, tin-lined. It has a water-gauge showing the height of the water in the still, also an exit for steam, and safetyvalve, V; inlet for steam through a coiled perforated block-tin pipe; also an outlet, 0, for cleaning out the still; and there is also a heavy

Although the subject has no practical bearing on the metallurgy of the present day, it may not be entirely uninteresting to note how the art of silver-lead smelting has been, and in a few remote districts of Peru is still practiced by an old method, and under conditions widely different from our own. The subject will be considered under the following subdivisions,. viz.: The general conditions; construction and plan of furnaces;, fuels and ores; method of working; furnace products and slags. The mineral region of Peru varies in altitude from 10,000 to 16,000 feet above sea-level, comparatively few mines being locatedh above or below these limits. The timber-line in the valleys is at about 12,000 feet altitude on the western slope of the mountains, and even there the supply of wood is not sufficient to be utilized as fuel for furnaces. The sides of the mountains are either bare or covered with a hard bushy grass, which is most luxuriant during the latter part of the rainy season, from February to April. Agriculture on the western slope rarely reaches above 12,000 feet, while on the eastern slope its limit is at 14,000 feet; and in either case the height named is reached only in sheltered places. (communication to the Secretary +) :-The nails method is given in many text books on assaying as a standard method for gold or for gold and silver in ores. It appears to be taught in the laboratories of technical and scientific schools as a standard method, and to some extent it is used by assayers in actual practice, although the class of ores to which it may be applied is limited to those free from reducible metallic compounds, the metals of which would enter the lead button. The experiments of Messrs. Hall and Drury show the inaccuracy of this rnethod for silver, in heavy sulphides, but not so clearly the short-comings with regard to gold. It seems certain that low silver is caused by the solubility of silver in iron-alkali sulphide as compared with its solubility in molten lead; that is, silver is distributed between iron-alkali sulphide and metal in the charge in proportion to solubility at the particular temperature of the fusion. Lead is a fixed quantity in these assay charges, but iron-alkali sulphide increases with increased sulphur, so the more sulphur in the charge, the lower the silver results.

This chapter reviews the early stages of a study designed to investigate the physical behavior of the coal measure rocks around longwall panels over a relatively large area. The aim of the work is to attempt to explain a directional tendency for a certain type of underground fracture. The geological structure of the area is reasonably uniform but the effect of some local anomalies is also discussed. Although some definite tendencies have been recorded, the results so far achieved need confirmation by further experiments. The chapter deals first with some in-situ strain measurements carried out in longwall panels and continues with a discussion of the relationships between induced fractures and the natural variations in the structure of the rock mass. Finally, some light is shed upon the gas outburst phenomenon although eradication of the hazard is far from assured. STRESS AROUND A LONGWALL PANEL Considerable progress has been made during the last few years towards the determination of the mechanism of failure of small samples of rock under varying environmental conditions. Much more laboratory testing needs to be done in this field but an even greater amount of study needs to be devoted to the extrapolation of laboratory phenomena to failure around underground excavations. Like the caboose on the end of a long freight train L made up of mineral and metal processing and consuming industries, the mining industry progresses according to the movement of the train to which it is coupled. Sometimes the caboose rolls smoothly; occasionally it bumps along on the ties; almost always it is under criticism from someone for being too small, too large, too expensive, foolishly progressive, or hopelessly out of date. We who ride in the caboose are used to the rough by now, but it is nice now and then to have a bit of the smooth. Last year the train of industrial production rolled ahead swiftly and smoothly, and, except for a hot-box caused by strikes in copper mines, so did the caboose. As is brought out elsewhere in this issue, the outlook for 1956 is for more of the same.

Tourism is the second largest industry in the Tasmanian copper mining center of Queenstown, Australia, but it is not the historic mine the tourists come to see. The attraction is rather the devastation the mine has brought to the surrounding countryside which has made Queenstown literally the most colorful mining town in Australian history.

Introduction STRIPPING is the name given to the process of removing clay, rock, or other cover from deposits of coal or ore. In this paper it is intended to cover the methods used in carrying on this operation in the anthracite coal regions of Pennsylvania. In doing this, attention will be chiefly devoted to those methods wherein practice in different sections of the region differs, or is susceptible to change or improvement, though it is intended to give as complete data as possible concerning all stages of the operation. The data from which this paper has been prepared have been collected and submitted by a committee representing the larger users of stripping methods, of which committee the writer has acted as chairman. Data and assistance have also been obtained from various mining men, engineers, contractors and manufacturers of stripping equipment, to all of whom our appreciation is clue.

Albert Sauveur writes, on Apr. 16, 1918, while the German offensive was at its height, as follows: "In spite of the German guns and air raids we are all in good health and spirits and shall leave Paris only as a last extremity. Our unlimited confidence in Foch, however, makes us believe that it will not be necessary. I trust that everything is well with you at the Institute." Harold Whittingham entered the active service with the heavy artillery in England at the beginning of the war and has been fighting in France since February, 1915. He now holds the rank of Major. On Dec. 17, 1917, after being wounded, he was taken prisoner by the Germans, and, so far as is known, is still in a prison camp in Germany. Charles W. Wright, who is a Captain in charge of the work of the American Red Cross in Sardinia, Italy, writes that the service there is giving aid to about 80,000 soldiers' families and is upholding the good repute of America in that place. W. S. Holloway in 1914 joined the Sportsmans' Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers as a private, but is now a Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers, Mining Corps. C.-I would like to hear some further detail as to the California deposits. L. C. MORGANROTH, Pittsburgh, Pa.-We have examined the California deposits at various times; I have been over practically all of them myself. These deposits are all of the massive variety. While it is possible that it could be mined and used for metallurgical purposes, it is not feasible because it costs too much. At the present time magnesite which is mined in California is used in the making of plaster, or by the paper trade. Careful figures show that if the California magnesite could be delivered to Atlantic seaports in the crude state at not over $4 a gross ton, and assuming that it would give the same results as the Austro-Hungarian magnesite, it would be cheaper to use the latter. It is also more difficult to dead-burn the massive magnesite, for while it starts to give up its gas readily, the difficulty consists in driving off the last few per cent., and unless this is driven off the magnesite will absorb C02 from the air, so that in a few months it may have 10 or 12 per cent. INTRODUCTION Grouting is an engineering operation which has been practiced for many years and a considerable amount of experience and skill has been developed in this field. However, a review of the current literature (Houlsby, 1982) reveals that the theoretical background and experimental observations that are necessary to adequately predict or describe the performance of a particulate grout (e.g. cement based) in a jointed geologic media are somewhat inadequate. In the near future it is envisaged that the use of grout and grouting techiques will be used to tackle even more difficult problems than have been considered in the past. One problem that is currently being faced by the rock mechanics engineer is the development of geologic repositories for the disposal and containment of high level radioactive waste. In such structures there will be only one opportunity to ensure the success of the containment system. This success will depend to a large extent on the adequate and successful performance of the grout curtains to be utilized around the shafts and shaft liners. Regrouting will not be possible. There are other problems in rock mechanics in which it is frequently necessary to inject particulate media into passages of small dimensions, and where typically the size of fracture being injected is of the same order of magnitude as the particle dimension. For example, in the oil industry in hydraulic fracturing the enhancement of fracture conductivity is maintained by means of proppants introduced into the fracture.

THE present state of iron blast-furnace practice is metallurgical rather than mechanical; the tend-ency is toward intensity rather than toward ex-tension. The engineers have built blast furnaces big enough and strong enough, and have furnished accessory equipment ample and accurate enough for the present state of the art, but the metallurgical side has been too much neglected; the metallurgist, rather than the engi-neer, is now the man on whom the present and future progress in iron blast-furnace practice depends. The mining engineer has produced great tonnages of iron ores, and has kept ahead of the demands for quantity; now the metallurgist is improving the chemical and physical qualities of this product by ore-dressing and other forms of beneficiation. For a generation or more, the principles of mechanics have had most influence in the advancement of iron blast-furnace practice; atten-tion now is given more to the principles of metallurgy, chemistry, and ore-dressing. This metallurgical progress is taking place inside and outside the blast furnace. The two great determining factors of the inside operation are the slag, and the rate of combustibility of the coke. Outside the fur-nace, the progress is, and will be, along the lines of more careful mixing of ores and iron-bearing materials, in the sizing and washing of limestone, and in the char-acter and structure of byproduct coke.

THE only asbestos mine in the Middle East is on the Island of Cyprus, high in the Trodos Mountain village of Amiandos. The mine is owned by the Tunnel Asbestos Cement Co. Annual output is some 18.000 tons of short fibre in the 4-T. 4-Z, and 5-R grades.

It is possible to construct a simple diagram of the earnings, or the production, of the men employed at a coal mine that will show not only if the conditions tend toward contentment among the men, but if the operating distribution of the work is correct. As earnings are the greatest cause of discontent, even exceeding all the other causes, if contentment exists in the matter of earnings, the likelihood of other discontents flaring up is greatly lessened. The basis of such a diagram would be the Gaussian curve of the normal variation in human ability. Such a curve has long been recognized. H. L. Moore,' in discussing the quantitative relation between wages and ability says: "It has been pointed out that industrial efficiency is dependent upon physical, mental, and moral qualities, and these qualities . . . there is good reason for regarding as being distributed according to the Gaussian law.

DRILLING and blasting in anthracite open-pit mines is a continuous problem to contractors and explosive engineers because of the diverse conditions caused by the nature of the geological formations, the extensive mining of the portions of coal beds near the surface, and the proximity of many strip pits to populated areas. Pennsylvania anthracite occurs in four separate long and narrow fields totaling only 480 sq miles. The coal measures are rock strata and coal beds that are considerably folded and faulted. The crests of the anticlines are eroded extensively. The beds outcrop on the mountain sides and dip under the valleys. At first only the upper portions of the syn-clines could be stripped. Now stripping to increasingly greater depths is economically possible, as is indicated by the fact that the proportion of freshly mined anthracite produced by strip mining has increased from 3.7 pct of the total tonnage in 1930 to 29.6 pct in 1950. Much of the rock overlying the deeper beds now being stripped is so extensively broken that considerable difficulty is experienced in drilling satisfactory blast holes and in using explosives in such manner as to insure a uniformly broken material easily removed by the excavating machinery. Such breaking of rock strata has occurred because the bed now being stripped has been mined extensively in former years by underground methods, and tops of gangways and chambers have subsequently failed. Draglines are used to uncover coal where the overburden can be moved with little or no re-handling. These machines range in size from those having a 2 cu yd capacity bucket on a 60-ft boom to those handling a 25 cu yd bucket on a 200-ft boom. Draglines are also used to strip to the bottom of the coal basins if the depth and the distance between the crops are not too great. For this type of operation blast holes are drilled full depth to the bed. These holes are commonly 30 to 90 ft deep; however, in exceptional cases, holes may be as shallow as 12 ft or as deep as 130 ft. Drilling is normally done for blasts of 12,000 to 60,000 cu yd of overburden, 30,000 cu yd being considered an average blast if vibration is not the controlling factor. Where the stripping of wide basins or the exposure of a moderately pitching vein makes the use of draglines impractical, dipper front shovels equipped with 4 to 6 cu yd buckets load into trucks. Overburden is removed in benches of 25 to 30 ft with blast holes drilled 4 or 5 ft deeper than the planned floor of the bench. For shovels under 5 cu yd bucket capacity the volume blasted varies from 8000 to 12,000 cu yd, whereas a volume of 30,000 to 50,000 cu yd of overburden is frequently blasted at one time for the larger shovels where vibration is not an important factor. During the past decade the churn drill, generally the Model 42-T Bucyrus-Erie blast hole drill equipped for drilling 9-in. diam holes, has become the most common blast hole drilling machine. Electricity powers half the churn drills in use and is preferred on the large strippings where electric shovels are operated and the working area is concentrated. On these operations the cost of additional electricity for the drills is less than the cost of fuel to operate diesel units because of the existing large demand load of the excavating equipment. Moreover, electric motors start more easily in cold weather and generally are less expensive to maintain. Diesel driven units are employed where a higher degree of mobility is required. The average drilling speed is 8 ft per hr, although in softer rocks a rate of 15 ft per hr is attained. Where rock is hard and strata is badly broken, drill speeds may be less than 2 ft per hr. Low drilling production results under these circumstances when loose material falling from the upper portion of the drill holes causes drill stems to be jammed. Rock formations vary so greatly in the region that a 9-in. diam churn drill bit may become dull after drilling only 2 ft or may drill satisfactorily for 56 ft; however, an average of 35 ft is usual in sandstone of medium hardness. Dull bits are hoisted to flat bed trucks by the sand line of the drill and are usually sharpened in the contractor's bit shop adjacent to the job. Care is generally taken to cover the thread end of the bit with a cap. To facilitate handling of bits around the drill, a heavy thread protector having an eye top is becoming more popular than the flat-top rubber or metal cap furnished with new bits. The 9-in. diam blast holes for a 25 to 30 ft bench are normally on 18x18 ft to 20x20 ft spacings, depending on the character of the overburden, although in broken ground 15x18 ft centers may be used to obtain better breakage and a more even bottom for the bench. In spite of its recognized irregularities, the cyanide-assay for copper has always been popular among volumetric methods, being easy and rapid, and reasonably accurate when the solution tested contains nothing but pure copper and ammonium salts. In order to secure this condition, however, especially in operati~ig on low-grade ores, tailings and slags of complex composition, it is the practice to precipitate the copper from the ore-solution,—usually by means of metallic zinc or aluminum. The copper thus precipitated in the metallic form must be dissolved again; and the separa tion is never, in practice, complete, since an appreciable amount of the copper remains behind in the first solution, and the second solution always contains some of the other metals of the gangue; so that the result is at best but partially satisfactory.
