Work is vepurted which was aimed at accentuating the pec14liar attributes of the GaAs laser diode, namely its sutzull size and its high efficiency. This has been done by reducing- transport losses in the bulk p and n regions of the diode and combining many of. these diodes into series stacks with common optical cazlities. The result of this effort is a nearly monochromati source at about 8450A With a luminous areu 0.05 by The GaAs laser diode is an attractive pulsed light source in the near ir because of its ability to emit very large pulse powers and its small size. In addition to this, the device is efficient; and the higher the 0.05 cm emitting peak pulse po we rs at greater than 300 LC at repetition rates below 200 pps into a cone about 0.01 steradians when operated at 77°K. The results of nzeasuvetnents of peak optical power and spectra frorr~ these stacks are reported and some conclusions are drawn about the vole the individual diodes play in the stacked operation. peak output power, the more efficient it is. The limit for the amount of power that these diodes can emit is the transient and average dissipation associated with the pumping pulse. The first mention of the occurrence of native copper near Lake Superior is found in a book by Lagarde, published in 1636. The letters of the Jesuit missionaries in the seventeenth century refer to the use of this copper by the Indians. Francesco Bressani, an Italian friar, says, in 1653: "There is a copper ore, which is very pure, and which has no need of passing through the fire; but it is in places far distant and hard to reach. We have seen it in the hands of the barbarians".* Father Jerome Lalemant, writing in 1659, says that the coast of Lake Superior is "enriched with copper of such excellence that pieces as large as one's fist are found, all refined.† These pieces of copper were hoarded by the Indians as mascots. The mention of the metal as having been already refined by nature recalls the fact that the old Greek historians spoke of gold-dust as being apuron, or not needing the fire. Father Claude Allouez,‡ writing in 1666, says: "One often finds at the bottom of the water [of Lake Superior] pieces of pure copper, of ten and twenty livres [pounds] weight. I have several times seen such pieces in the savages' hands; and since they are superstitious [as if the padres themselves were not!], they- keep them as so many divinities, or as presents which the gods dwelling beneath the water have given them, and on which their welfare is to depend. For this reason they preserve these pieces of copper, wrapped up, among their most precious possessions".

THE Anaconda company has never indulged in any employee activities at Butte which might be termed paternalistic, but it has exerted a vast amount of effort in care of its employees during working hours. The reason for this policy is not lack of interest or that the company does not feel the effect of employees' activities while they are "off the job"; it is that the company and the city of Butte have grown up together and, each has been adequate in its own sphere, the company in providing employment at the highest possible wage and the city in providing housing, sanitation, commercial services, medical services, schools, churches, amusements and entertainments. The one exception to this independence between the company and the community is the Butte Water Co., which is a wholly owned sub-sidiary of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. Mention of this relationship is made here because the water supply of such a city as Butte is one of the principal factors in determining the health of the people. Very early in the development of the Anaconda company an adequate and dependable water supply for the operations became necessary, therefore the company took over this important community function. So well has this activity worked out that during the whole period of time covered, in which the company has expanded to become practically the sole mine operator and the community has grown from a small mining camp to the status of a modern city, there has been no shortage of water or any outbreak of water-borne, epidemic disease.

The thermodynamics of the set of functions including the activation enthalpy. the activation free energy, and the activation entropy for the motion of dislocations at low temperatures is formulated without a specific model or a mechanism. The behniiior near absolute zero of all these functions and of other relevant quantities related to dislocation mobility Is examined in the light of the third law of thermodynamics. The velocity measurements of Stein and Low for edge dislocations in Si-Fe are used .for illustrotion. In the plastic deformation of crystalline materials, a fundamental assumption, which is supported by direct measurements using etch-pit techniques,'-4 is that the average velocity of a certain mobile dislocation is a single-valued function of temperature and the effective shear stress exerted on the mobile dislocation: Sometimes under certain assumptions, even without direct dislocation-velocity measurements, an activation volume can be obtained from a change in strain rate in a simple tension test. Similarly an ac tivation enthalpy can be obtained by changing the temperature in a creep test. However, the assumptions involved should be studied carefully before using the results of these tests. Consider, for example, a tensile specimen at some stage of deformation with a distribution of mobile dislocations. Let the total length of dislocations of type i be pi per unit volume. The Burgers vector of these dislocations is hi which makes an angle ?i with the tensile axis. With respect to the same tensile axis, let the normal of the slip plane of these dislocations

The results of field measurements using an air injection technique to investigate the integrity of three pillars in the Mclntyre Mines Ltd. 114 seam at Crande Cache, Alberta, are reported. These pillars are shown to be stable and an estimate is made of the strength of these pillars. Using these results, together with Hustrulid's pillar strength formulae, a general pillar strength equation for the 114 seam is developed. This equation takes into account the probability of failure that may be deemed tolerable within the design requirements. The variation of the minimum pillar dimensions with depth below surface for uniform pillar layouts is then examined for a range of tolerable failure probabilities. A general equation of the form B = 2.60 +B Z relates the minimum pillar design width, B metres, with the overburden depth, Z metres, where B is a parameter related to the tolerable failure probability. This equation only applies for 3.05m high pillars with 6.lm wide entries. Finally, the question of what failure probability is tolerable within the design of mine pillars is discussed. This will depend on the support role required of that pillar and the anticipated period over which the pillar must perform that role. Five categories of coal mine pillars are defined, each with a somewhat different role to perform. Tentative design criteria in the form of "tolerable probabilities of failure" are suggested for four of these five categories of pillar. The fifth category of pillar has no reliable support function to perform and support must be obtained by other means.

not weaken. I saw him shortly before he was killed; his conduct under fire was splendid and an inspiration to his men. His loss is felt deeply by all ranks. Thanks to him and to others, who like him, paid the full measure of devotion to their country, our line was held until the critical situation in that vicinity was at an end. He died the true death of a soldier, with his face to the enemy. As we now look back, it is easy to believe that this holding of the line of defense intact by General Carey and his men was a determining factor in the outcome of the war. To have played so important and noble a part in this vital effort as that taken by Perry is assuredly the privilege of few. Our lives, it seems, are like capital entrusted to us to be expended as wisely and effectively as we may. With them we purchase whatever of accomplishment the stuff that is in us permits. It is impossible to escape profound regret that a career so full of the highest promise, and a personality so overflowing with all that is fine and lovable, should have been cut short at the age of thirty-one. Yet who can doubt that in a few months Perry bought with his life the fullest achievement of a life-time—a glorious part in the salvation of Liberty and Justice and Decency, indeed of Civilization itself! In recent years examination of thin foils of metals and alloys has been widely used in studies of deformation and phase-transformation mechanisms. Applications of this technique to studies of titanium and titanium alloys have been infrequent. Therefore, as a large number of titanium alloys have been investigated in this laboratory, it is proposed to give an account of methods used. Particular emphasis will be placed on some of the artifacts introduced in thin foils of titanium and titanium alloys during preparation. Experimental Procedure. It has been found that a large number of titanium alloys can be electropolished in a solution consisting of 30 cu cm perchloric acid (60 pct), 175 cu cm n-butyl alcohol, and 300 cu cm methyl alcohol. Thin foils are prepared using the window method and the electropolishing conditions listed in Table I. Although this solution is not unique, it is attractive because of its low concentration of perchloric acid and the wide range of alloys for which it can be used. Electropolishing is conducted at below -25°C as above this temperature a brown anodic film is produced on the specimen surface. Temperatures above -25°C also accentuate preferential attack of the 0 phase in the two-phase alloys, which unfortunately occurs at all temperatures. Contamination. It is advantageous to reduce the specimen to a thickness of 25 to 50 p prior to electropolishing, since the low-temperature electropolishing technique results in a low rate of metal removal. Probably the only hotel in the world with near 100% occupancy at all times is the modern Hotel Indonesia in Djakarta. However, there is little gaiety among the scores of business men who occupy the hotel because they fret as days grow into weeks in seemingly interminable negotiations with government officials. As one man put it, "time is a dimension that they [Indonesians] have never grasped." But the visitors still come in droves to investigate business opportunities in this sprawling nation of tropical islands which is, with 120 million people, the fifth largest nation in the world. Approximately $300 million is being spent each year in Indonesia by foreign companies and governments. Aid grants from the latter are derived about one third from the United States, one third from Japan and the remainder from many nations. Djakarta is a far cry from pleasant colonial Batavia, as the city was called under the Dutch. The orderly colony of prewar days was managed as an agricultural and trading dependency of Holland. The Dutch did little about educating the people. The islands were controlled by the Japanese during World War II and afterwards there was a war for independence--which was attained in 1949. In the ensuing years, President Sukarno devastated the economy by squandering money on a gigantic scale. A Communist-attempted coup in 1965 resulted in a military takeover and the extermination of Communists. The new government under Suharto, which took over all power in March 1966, found itself in a situation where bare survival was the first consideration.

No question in the metallurgical chemistry of the present day seems to be so difficult to agree upon as the determination of phosphorus in iron and steel. To my knowledge, there are at present at least three different methods in use in the iron laboratories of the United States, viz.: The citric acid method, the molybdate-magnesia method, and the direct molybdate method,—the last-named method having been lately adopted. Each of these methods has its advocates, who take every pains to prove its advantages, and the incorrectness of the others; and much has been written for the purpose of securing the use of a standard method—as yet, however, without any result. There is no doubt, or ought to be none, that each of these methods gives correct results, when it is carefully conducted and every precaution is taken. But it is not only correct results that we want nowa-days. The demand is great, also, for getting results in the shortest possible time. I think it has been sufficiently proved that the direct molybdate method, the weighing of the precipitate, answers well in both respects. Being a pupil of Prof. Eggertz, I have myself used his method for years until quite recently, as it is described by Mr. Troilius in our Transactions, vol. x., p. 166 (but with some slight modifications), and I can safely say that the results of this method agree well with those of the molybdate-magnesia method. Discussion of the paper of J. V. EMMONS, presented at the Pittsburgh meeting, October, 1914. and printed in Bulletin No. 93, September, 1914, pp. 2233 to 2248. ALBERT SAUVEUR, Cambridge, Mass.-Mr. Emmons is to be congratulated for having placed before us in so forcible and satisfactory a manner a question of much importance-that of the surface decarbonization of steel. Of course, both manufacturers and consumers have known for many years that during the heat treatment of high-carbon steel, surface deca.rbonization is always likely to occur to a greater or less degree, but the subject does not seem to have been investigated with the method and thoroughness it deserves. I am in substantial agreement with Mr. Emmons's conclusions, and I have but little to add to what he has so well said. His statement that carbon dioxide is just as effective an oxidizing agent as pure oxygen is likely to cause surprise and some will wonder whether his investigation has been carried far enough to warrant so unexpected a conclusion. The reaction C + 0 = CO, expressing the oxidation of carbon by pure oxygen, is decidedly exothermic, whereas the reaction C + C02 = 2C0, expressing the oxidation of carbon by carbon dioxide, is endothermic. Decarburization by pure oxygen, therefore, should take place much more readily than by carbon dioxide. One cannot help regretting that the author does not mention' the best way of preventing in a practical manner surface decarbonization while treating tool steel and other high-carbon steels.

As the theory and the practice of valuing mines have never been discussed in the Transactions, a paper on the subject may be acceptable, even though not exhaustive. The method here indicated is set forth, not as a model of perfection to be followed absolutely, to the exclusion of any other system based on sound scientific, commercial and equitable principles, but merely as an aid to mining engineers and financiers in estimating the value of mining-property. This paper is intended merely to point out certain financial features of the question, and not at all to go into the theories of the formation of mineral veins, extremely valuable as it must, of course, be to understand the laws of the earth's formation and of its various changes, which are the basis of such important sciences as geology and mineralogy, and highly useful as guides in determining the probable existence and extension of mineral deposits. Financial Elements of Mine- Valuation. The practice of basing the stock-exchange price of mining shares upon reports, periodically received from the mine-captain or manager, stating that in his opinion the mine is " improving " in this or that level, and is worth so much " per fathom," is, of course, absurd. Everybody experienced in metalliferous mining is aware that a mineral vein varies in thickness and also in percentage of metal in different parts of the same mine. According to the practice just indicated, a mine must have had as many values a per fathom " as there have been given reports upon it at intervals during the year,

The intent of this paper is to present the general strategy and method of implementation to achieve a "fast-track" mine development. The major objectives of a "fast-track or rapid development schedule are to minimize front-end development expenditures and to realize an early cash flow from operations. The Borealis project of Houston International Minerals Corp. (HIMCO) is used as the working example to illustrate the development schedule. Borealis is a 2.9 kt/d (2,500 stpd) gold-silver heap leach operation near Hawthorne, NV.

Article IX of the Bylaws constitutes the basic instructions to the Nominating Committee The first duty of the Nominating Committee is to select a candidate for Director and President-elect It is desirable that the successive Presidents from year to year be men of differing professional interests so selected that over a period of years each major group in the Institute will be represented in the Presidency a number of times bearing some reasonable relationship to the numerical strength of that group in the Institute In Section 2 of Article IX it is stated that "a sufficient number of Directors be selected on the basis of geographical districts so that each district will have at least one representative" These districts, as now established, are shown in the accompanying map There are ten districts including the New York metropolitan district Each of these districts is entitled to one Director, except the metropolitan district which is entitled to six Each year each district, the term of whose officially recommended Director expires, shall suggest a candidate and if desired an alternate candidate to the Nominating Committee to fill the vacancy If a candidate and an alternate are suggested they should preferably have different Divisional or Branch affiliations The Chairmen of the Sections In the district shall constitute a committee to select the candidate or candidates The Sections shall rotate the chairmanship, as shown in the Appendix to this instruction It is desirable that in filling a quota vacancy in any district, the selection be made from the name or names suggested by the district

WITHIN the last twenty-five or thirty years the actual operations of the great mining industry have passed almost wholly under the charge of men trained in the technical colleges. It follows that the industry is profoundly influenced for good or ill by the character of the training which the college graduate receives, and the relations existing between the industry and the colleges. This fact seems to be generally recognized, as evidenced, for example, by the existence of a Committee on Technical Education created some two or three years ago by the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America. In 1921 this committee rendered a very able and. extremely well poised reports of technical education as applied to the prospective mining engineer. It deserves the attention of every one interested in the effectiveness of engineering training. That the importance of the relation between the mining industry and the engineering colleges is recog-nized is evidenced also by the mass of criticism, usually adverse, which is proffered to and often hurled at the colleges by those in the industry. The man inn the field sometimes goes so far as to say that engineering educa-tion is hopelessly inefficient and its product worthless, while the college worker sometimes complains that the demands of the industrialist are too numerous and conflicting to be met, and adds that they would' best be ignored. Between these extremes, there seems to be a general consensus of opinion that the training of the would-be engineer can be, and. ought to be, made much better than it now is.

Pumping coal to market may help Appalachian coal operators increase their share of the eastern seaboard fuel business. Transporting it by pipeline is already an accomplished fact, but until recently it had to be dewatered to be used in boiler furnaces. The campaign for these eastern markets was begun in earnest last November by the widely publicized announcement of successful plant-scale firing of a central station boiler with coal slurry pumped to the burners. This latest advance makes coal similar to oil and gas in convenience in handling and controlling at the consumption end of the pipeline. Slurry could be considered a new commodity for the fuel market. HUGE POTENTIAL MARKET The heaviest concentration of power plants in the U.S. is along the line Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York and Boston which makes this region the best hunting ground for selling pipelined coal brought from western Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia. Furthermore, if this region is assumed to consume 125 million tons of coal annually, on a comparable basis, the consumption of oil and gas would be about 180 million tons. Even if all of this fuel is not consumed in central stations, it is still a very big market for coal at the right price. Consolidation Coal Co. and Texas Eastern Transmission Co. are trying to line up customers in this area so that a pipeline can be built. This is not to say that there are not many other areas in the U.S. that could not be supplied advantageously by a mine-to-market pipeline.

(written discussion?).-Regarding the statement of Mr. Ordoñez, on page 1007, concerning the synclinal curving of sedimentary beds caused by the extrusion of volcanic necks, that "this phenomenon might occur, but it is not fully proved in our fields," I beg to reply that the funnel and anticlinal-ring structure is actually associated with igneous intrusions in the Mexican oil fields, as we were able to ascertain by plotting an underground contour map and making a structural model of the oil-bearing beds of the Ebano field. Aside from the medal funds the principal endowments are the James Douglas Fund for support of the Library, the Rocky Mountain Fund and the Seeley W. Mudd Memorial Fund. The income from the two last named is available for the support of research and a variety of other purposes. It is allocated by the Board of Directors upon recommendation of standing committees in each case. 'An active effort is being made to increase the endowments of the Institute, it being felt that unusual opportunities exist for research and public and professional service through the organization.

IN studying the possibilities of a continuously recording magnetometer for use along the surface of the earth and in an airplane, the Federal Bureau of Mines was led to a study of the theoretical resolving power of magnetic observations, both in the variation of the total magnetic intensity and in each of the two components ordinarily measured. Along with this general study, an attempt was made to determine the relative worth of the total intensity anomaly and the vertical anomaly in geophysical prospecting. General considerations led to three conclusions: I. In the northern magnetic hemisphere of the earth, the total intensity anomaly is offset to the south of the vertical anomaly, for a positive anomaly (see Appendix, note I). 2. The resolving power of magnetic observations decreases rapidly with distance from the disturbing body. 3. The horizontal anomaly has little value in prediction of the disturbing body but might be useful in making a choice between bodies suggested by the vertical or total anomaly. Some of the considerations leading to these conclusions were: I. The normal intensity and the anomalous intensity are vectorially additive; hence for a positive anomaly in the northern magnetic hemisphere the total intensity will be a maximum at some point south of the disturbing body and north of the point at which the line to the disturbing body is parallel to the normal earth's field. The anomaly itself has a maximum value directly above the body. For a positive anomaly of constant magnitude, the total intensity will be a maximum when the anomaly vector is parallel to the normal vector. This is shown schematically in Fig. I (not to scale) for a magnetic distribution not restricted to a relatively thin sheet in the magnetic meridian. The normal field has a magnitude Io with vertical component Vo and horizontal component H,. Six station points along a traverse' across the body from south to north are shown at M to S. At each of these stations the normal magnetic field vector terminates at F. At each of these stations the magnetic field vector due to the disturbing body B terminates at A. The line through the station point and the point A passes through B. The magnitude of the anomaly, indicated by the length of the vector terminating at A, is proportional to some power of the distance from the station point to the disturbing body. If the' disturbing body B is a concentrated point of magnetic material, the anomaly is proportional to the inverse second power of the distance. For a uniform magnetic distribution over a line perpendicular to the observed traverse, the anomaly is proportional to the inverse first power of the distance. Until about 1930, the universal practice of horizontal-retort zinc smelters in the United States, as far as the writers are aware, was to operate the retort furnaces on a 24-hr cycle; that is, the retorts were charged in the early morning of one day, and in the early morning of the following day the residues were cleaned out, the retorts recharged, and a new cycle started. During the business depression of the early thirties, zinc production fell off to the extent that zinc smelters had idle retort capacity. Rather than continue to run some of the retort furnaces on a 24-hr cycle and shut down the remainder, a few companies decided to try out a longer cycle. Although the output of zinc per retort per day is lower, the longer cycle permits a larger charge per retort and improved zinc recovery. Advantages of the longer cycle were soon evident, and the practice spread rapidly. Various lengths of cycle were used, typical examples being 28-hr, 32-hr, 36-hr, and 48-hr. The 48-hr cycle fits in best with the standard routine of smelter practice that was built up on the basis of the 24-hr cycle; that is, the retort furnace "maneuver" always comes at the same time of day, and can be performed in the cool hours of the early morning. Under some conditions, particularly in some of the older plants, where the retorts are smaller than in newer plants, a 48-hr cycle is longer than necessary, and some intermediate length of cycle may theoretically be most economical. Use of an intermediate cycle, however, means that the maneuver comes at different times on consecutive days, and that sometimes it comes during the hottest part of the day. The work on the retort furnaces is extremely hot and arduous at best, and it is much worse, of course, if it is done during the heat of a summer day. When labor was plentiful and tractable, many plants were able to operate on cycles of intermediate length, but the workmen did not like the working hours. Under present labor conditions, it is hardly practicable to operate with a cycle of intermediate length, so the choice has narrowed down to the alternatives of 24-hr or 48-hr cycles. In any discussion of economics, too comprehensive generalization is not warranted, because local conditions affecting economics vary greatly. The best economic practice at one plant at any given time may be uneconomical at another plant, or even at the same plant at another time. To determine the length of cycle that is the better practice at a given plant at a given time requires a weighing of the advantages and disadvantages of each cycle, taking into consideration all the local conditions. some of the factors that must be considered in making the comparison are discussed briefly in the following paragraphs.
