The volumes of Transactions, which are published annually, contain the list of officers, rules, etc., the Proceedings, and the papers revised for final publication. (In this revision, after the preliminary publication, authors are permitted to use the largest liberty; and the changes and additions made in papers are sometimes important. It should be borne in mind by those who study or quote a paper in the preliminary edition, that they may not have in that form the ultimate and deliberate expression of the author's views. There has been considerable discussion of late as to the best method of determining the silver-contents of sulphides of silver resulting from the leaching of silver-ores, and also as to the relative merits of the crucible- and the scorification-method for the determination of the silver-contents of ores. Owing to the great depression in the silver-market, these are questions of considerable importance, at the present time, to both the producer and the smelter and refiner. As the established tailings disposal techniques do not meet the requirements of today, alternative methods of disposal are explored. McIntyre Mines Ltd., Coal Div. found a solution in the construction and operation of a tailings dewatering plant. The solids are recovered from the tailings slurry by means of mechanical dewatering equipment and are then dried in a unique drying system to provide an excellent thermal fuel for a power generating station.

IN an effort to distinguish experimentally between the radically different limits of two-liquid im-miscibility reported for the Cu-Pb system by Borne-inann and Wagenmann and by Briesemeister (see Fig. I), it was found that the high temperature homogeneous liquid containing between 41 and 93 pct Pb could not be frozen without separation into two liquids with the fastest cooling technique that could be devised. Thus, the two-phase state could not be distinguished with certainty from the one-phase state by the examination of quenched samples. To overcome this obstacle the following method for detecting the presence of an interface between two immiscible conducting liquids at temperature was developed. Measurements made by the new method substantiate the Briesemeister diagram in its general form. The method consists essentially in the measure-

As part of its program to conserve domestic mineral resources through advancing mineral resources technology, the US Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, conducted investigations to determine the feasibility of recovering high-grade barite concentrates, suitable for use as well-drilling mud, from current and old waste pond materials and materials bypassed in present mining operations. Flotation studies of waste pond samples from Missouri and Nevada yielded barite concentrates containing over 95% Bas04 with recoveries of 86% and 96%, respectively, of the barite in the flotation feed. Flotation studies of a hard-rock sample from Georgia, currently bypassed in mining, yielded a barite concentrate containing 97% Bas04 with an attendant recovery of97% of the barite.

Rapidly increasing energy costs and more rigid customer quality requirements necessitate improved control of pelletizing processes. With the introduction of dedicated microprocessor-based controllers, sophisticated control strategies are now possible. An application of this technology at Carol Project has resulted in fuel savings, improved pellet quality, and standardization of operating procedures. This was accomplished with no production loss by using a "building block" approach to design and equipment selection.

The increasing volume of data produced by the Anglo American Corporation of South Africa, Limited, during the course of coal exploration prompted the establishment of a computer based processing system for coal data. This system, known as the Coal Mine Evaluation System, consists of geological, mine planning and financial evaluation sub-systems. This paper describes the use of the geological sub-system in assessing the surface mine potential of a portion of the Witbank Coalfield, South Africa, in which more than one thousand core boreholes have been drilled to date.

Gradual shifts in the center of ore production have dictated three moves for the Pend Oreille Mines & Metals Co. plant. Capacity has grown from 300 tpd to the present 2400 tpd, and the gravity process used at the original Josephine mill has long since given way to improved flotation practice. The Josephine mill, operated in World War I and converted to flotation in 1927, treated 200,000 tons of ore rating as high as 16 pct Zn. By 1935 extra ore handling warranted construction of a new mill on a lower level, and capacity was raised from 300 to 800 tpd.

OBSERVATIONS made in this paper were for the purpose of exploring the anomalous behavior of a particular heat of Type 310 stainless steel. The alloy, of nominal composition 25 pct Cr, 20 pct Ni, was observed to form a grain boundary precipitate at exceedingly high rates. DURING my stay at Raposos, State of Minas Geraes, Brdzil, I had the opportunity of making some observations, which, in the shape in which I am able to lay them before the Institute, are only to be considered as an experience which may possibly have important consequences. The ore-bodies worked there for gold are exclusively chimneys, mostly cylindrical, following the dip of the argillaceous slates (about 45° E.), without any visible connection with each other, without veins, and only exceptionally with some small stringers along the stratification, pinching out at short distances from the chimneys. They are composed of quartz with about 8 to 10 per cent. of pyrite and pyrrhotite, and different iron oxides.

Efforts were made to determine the amount of increase in the drying rate which could be obtained through acoustic treatment of ultra fine coal under various conditions, and to test the feasibility of using a rotary kiln and multitiered vibrating screens as a means for continuous drying of coal fines. Introduction of acoustic energy during the rotary kiln experiments increased the drying rates from 10-40%, depending upon the experimental condition. The use of a drying assembly consisting of multitiered vibrating screens produced better results than the rotary kiln and has definite possibilities of providing an effective means of drying coal fines in relatively large quantities.
