Coal treatment by oil spraying receives special attention at the Georgetown plant for the dividends it pays in satisfying present customers and attracting new markets. Customer satisfaction requires care, quality control, and use of suitable oils. REPRESENTED here are the ideas and varied experiences of many people in the Hanna Coal CO. who have helped develop, over a number of years, an efficient and flexible method for spraying controlled amounts of oil on coal. Since the Georgetown preparation plant began operations early in 1951, oil treatment of coal has received special attention. It is believed that oil treating will satisfy present customers and also attract new markets. The first step in developing the new method of oil spraying was the construction of a dust cabinet for testing 50-lb samples of treated coal with the available oil sprays on the market. Tests results were tabulated for both indoor and outdoor storage. The graph, Fig. 1, shows results of the original tests made with a 700-sec residual blend and a 500-sec lubricating oil on Georgetown stoker coal of 1¼x3/8-in. size.* The advantages of better price, improperly blended can raise havoc. Some.,pale oils also, although odorless when delivered, give off a sweet sickening odor when atomized under pressure. It is recommended that all products be tested before they are used. There is a specific place for all spraying oils. For example, at a power plant a severe dust condition exists around the stockpile area and in parts of the plant. The cheapest spraying oil made, regardless of odor, will do an excellent job in this case and will save the company 3 to 5c per gal or more. Domestic trade, on the other hand, must be carefully handled to prevent complaints about odor, and the only way to do this is to stay with the proved products after the odor tests have been made. The preparation plant at Georgetown has facilities to handle either tank car or tank truck deliveries. Steam is available at the unloading point if the weather is severe, and there is an indicator at the unloading point to prevent overflowing the 20,000-gal underground storage tank. Systematic test samples are removed from each delivery and sent to the lubrication engineer to insure quality control. Fig. 3 illustrates the chutes in which smaller sizes of coal are treated. Fig. 4 shows the entire spraying system. Buried in the ground is a 20,000-gal tank with immersion heaters grouped around the feeder line to insure adequate gravity flow to the pump under all conditions of weather. Oil flows to a 500-gal preheating tank where the temperature is kept about 150°F by six 1½-kw immersion heaters thermostatically controlled. Hot oil is fed through a self-cleaning disc-type filter to the hydraulic pump. Valves and piping make it possible to transfer oil from one tank to another or to drain the lines for maintenance purposes. All this equipment is below ground level in a covered pump room,

A mathematical model was derived for the temperature change in a particle undergoing heterogeneous chemical reaction and heal exchange with a stream of fluid. The model has been applied specifically to the exothermic oxidation of spherical particles of zinc sulfide. Very good agreement was obtained between the theoretical prediclion and experimental observation. It was found that at no stage of the reaction was the particle subjected to a state of thermal instability. In studies of gas-solid reactions, it is generally assumed that the gaseous and the solid phases are at the same temperature throughout the reaction period. This is not strictly true since most of the reactions are either exothermic or endothermic in nature. This paper deals only with heterogeneous gas-solid reactions of noncatalytic type. In the case of exothermic reactions (e.g., roasting of sulfides), there may result an increase in temperature of the particle due to the release of the heat of reaction, and this increase in temperature may enhance the reaction rate and thus cause further release of heat. Such a "spiralling" effect may lead to a thermally unstable situation within the particle. On the other hand, in the case of endothermic reactions (e.g., calcination of limestone), there may occur a decrease in temperature of the particle as the reaction proceeds, leading to a virtual "quenching" of the reaction front. A general discussion of autothermic processes with emphasis on properties and reactor design is given by Van Heerden. 1 Levesque and cubicciotti 2 observed self heating of the sample in the oxidation of thorium. Anous et al. 3 observed self cooling of the sample in their dehydration studies on chrome alum. Cannon and Denbigh, 4 and Ong et al.5 reported self heating of the sample in their studies of the kinetics of oxidation of zinc sulfide. A typical plot of heat generation and heat loss rates with reaction temperature is shown in Fig. 1.'14 The Sigmoid curve represents the heat generation rate while the straight lines represent the heat loss rate. The main objectives of this analysis are to estimate the temperature increase of a single particle undergoing an exothermic reaction and to study the possibility of a thermally unstable situation within the particle. Also, a study of the dependence of the tempera- ture increase on different process variables has been attempted. A "she ll-by-shell" method has been proposed to analyze the problem. The shells may be made as small as necessary, and equations may be set up for heat transfer by various mechanisms. Such equations will have to be solved for each shell, with the boundary conditions for ith shell being obtained from the (i - 1)th shell, using a high speed digital computer. The oxidation of spherical particles of zinc sulfide is considered for this analysis, but the treatment is general enough to be applicable to other reactions and particle shapes. The oxidation reaction can be written as AH =« -115 kcal/mole ZnS [1] Such a reaction has been found to proceed in a topo-chemical manner; i.e., as the reaction proceeds, a progressively thicker outer shell of zinc oxide is formed, while the inner core of unreacted sulfide decreases. A microelectrophoresis technique has been used to measure the zeta potential of quartz over a range of pH and ferric iron concentration. The results have been discussed in terms of the adsorption of ferric cations and ferric hydroxide to the quartz surface. Possible relationships between the experimental results and the flotation of quartz have been examined. The adsorption of multivalent cations at the surface of quartz has been studied by many investigators who have used a variety of experimental techniques ranging from streaming potential 1 to radiometric2 measurements. Two possible mechanisms of cation activation of quartz have emerged from the results of these investigations viz: the adsorption of the cation to the negatively charged quartz surface, followed by adsorption of the collector anion to the adsorbed cation site, or: formation of a cation-collector complex which is then adsorbed to the quartz surface. In many natural and industrial systems one of the most prevalent activating species for quartz is ferric iron, this is especially so in the acid-circuit, anionic flotation of iron ore. The adsorption of ferric iron to the quartz surface is complicated by the ability of ferric iron to form complexes with anions, a phenomena which is of minor importance in one of the most widely studied quartz activation processes, ca ++ activation.* *The pK value for [ca(oH)+]/ [ca2+] [oh-] is 1.46 indicating that the influence of Ca (OH)+ ions will be minor in all but strongly alkaline solutions. In order to obtain a better understanding of quartz activation by ferric iron the zeta potential of quartz in the presence of ferric iron has been measured over a range of pH and ferric iron concentration. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Materials: Selected samples of "rock clystal" quartz from New England, N.S.W., were ground in a pebble mill, washed for three hours in boiling concentrated hydrochloric acid, washed in hot chromic acid and then washed repeatedly with distilled water until the washing water gave no trace of chloride ion.

J. Chipman (Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Mass.)—The fact that the experimental work has been applied to copper rather than iron and that the paper is presented to the Iron and Steel Division, I regard as rather significant. It shows the unity of metallurgy and the fallacy of trying to cut it up by metals. This result for the solubility of sulphur in molten copper correlates with Professor Schuhmann's finding that the published data on the other side of the copper-sulphur miscibility gap are also in error. I should like to ask the author to say a little bit more about the sulphur capacity of the slag. T. Rosenqvist (author's reply)-—I hope that Dr. Chipman will find the derivation of the expression for sulphur capacity more clearly explained in the printed version of the paper than in the oral discussion at the meeting. I feel that this quantity, which actually is the ratio of two activities, can be measured more easily than the individual activities. Even if the ratio CaO/CaS is chosen as the standard state, the expression can be used for any slag, even for slags completely free of lime, and it represents a way to put the desulphurizing power of all slag constituents into one bag. Some doubt has been expressed as to whether oxygen ions really exist in calcium oxide and in molten slags. From a thermodynamic view point that question is of minor importance. The term oxygen ion activity, or any activity for that matter, is defined rigorously by the equation: activity = exp p/RT, where p is the change in free energy connected with the transfer of one mol of ions from the standard state into the slag. Whatever happens to the ion in the slag is of no concern to the thermodynamicist. Regardless of whether the ion is "free" in the slag or not, or whether it is present in a very small amount, its activity can always be expressed, and for a thermo- dynamic calculation that is all we need. However, ionic activities will only be of some real value if they are simple functions of the slag composition, or can be measured easily. Concerning the real nature of the oxygen in the slag, my feeling is that the oxygen atom has a rather multiplex nature depending on how strongly it is tied by covalent forces or polarized by the other atoms or ions present. The oxides of iron, cobalt, and nickel differ from calcium oxide and blast furnace slags as to the amount of free electrons that can give rise to electronic conductivity. In slags we know that the conductivity is mostly ionic. The fact that reversible emf's can be obtained with oxygen electrodes in certain salt melts, indicates a significant amount of oxygen ions in these melts. But extended work, e.g. polaragraphic studies and measurements of transference number; are needed to obtain quantitative information about the real structure of the slags. D. E. Babcock (Republic Steel Corp., Youngstown, Ohio)—-With reference to the ion, it might be well to remember Dr. Moses Gomberg. All of his life he had no use for the ionization theory and he contributed greatly to the field of chemistry on the assumption there was no such thing as ions. I do not think we have to worry about whether the oxygen is ionic or not. I think one thing specifically should be brought to your attention and this I think is one of the important contributions of Dr. Rosenqvist. He pointed out what we know as oxygen potentials or what is described as oxygen potentials. I have used this concept for a long period of time and I want to state that if this concept is properly applied, it vitiates much of what we have in the literature, or makes our usual ideas regarding oxidation seem primitive. The uranium industry is booming. In Texas alone, there are about 22 different companies with active exploration programs. Twelve solution mines have been permitted; three surface mines have been authorized; and two mills are currently in operation. However, the industry also has a problem, and that is the disposal of radioactive wastes. Over the past several years, stories concerning nuclear wastes have appeared frequently in the news. One of the most frequently cited cases occurred in Grand Junction, Colorado. In 1966, after ten years of investigations, the U. S. Public Health Service (PHS) discovered that tailings from a uranium mill were being used as fill material and aggregate for local construction purposes. It was estimated that between 150,000 and 200,000 tons of material had been removed and used under streets, driveways, swimming pools, and sewer lines. In addition, tailings had been used under concrete slabs and around foundations of occupiable structures. Further studies prompted the Surgeon General to warn that the risk of leukemia and lung cancer could be doubled at the measured radiation levels. More recently, the L. B. Foster Company discovered that its building site in Washington, West Virginia, was radioactive. While digging a foundation, the ground erupted and a ball of fire 30 feet high shot out. Evidently, the dirt was laced with radioactive thorium and zirconium, a potentially explosive mixture contained in a Nigerian sand which had been used by the previous site owners in the manufacture of nuclear fuel rods. Just this month we have read about legal suits to stop exploration for a nuclear waste disposal site in Randall County, Texas. The U. S. Department of Energy is trying to locate a deep underground nuclear waste depository for final burial of over 76 million gallons of high-level wastes. The problem is acute, the wastes are accumulating at a rate of about 300,000 gallons per year. Nor do these numbers include the spent fuel elements from nuclear power plants that are in temporary storage facilities. Fortunately, public awareness of these and other related issues is high. Unfortunately, the differences in the waste products from the nuclear fuel cycle are not always apparent to the general public. There are two distinct types of radioactive wastes: "high-level", which consist of spent fuel or wastes from the reprocessing of spent fuel; and "low-level", which, in general, are by-product wastes. There are numerous non-technical definitions that can be applied to help the layman differentiate between high-level and low-level wastes. For this latter purpose, it is best to think of them in terms of what we can see and feel. In general, high-level wastes are physically hot and can cause acute radiation sickness in a short period of time. Low-level wastes are not hot, but may cause chronic health effects after long exposure. The wastes which we are concerned with in the uranium mining and milling industry are low-level wastes. As recently as ten years ago, there were very few controls or regulations governing tailings disposal methods. At the same time, mine reclamation was not enforced through either state or Federal laws and the long-term viability of abandoned tailings ponds was not assured. The regulatory climate has changed significantly in the last decade, however. The low-level radioactive wastes generated by uranium mining and milling are generally contained in a tailings pond. Approximately 85-97% of the total radioactivity contained in uranium ore is present in the mill waste that goes to such tailings ponds. The isotope Radium-226 is probably the most potentially harmful radioactive parameter in the ponds. Radium emits gamma radiation and is also an alpha particle emitter. Because gamma radiation is very penetrating, it presents a potential health problem when a source is located external to the body. Gamma radiation will go through the body, causing damage to each cell encountered on the way. Although alpha particles have very little penetration capability, they can cause extensive cell damage. For this reason, alpha particles are a problem after inhalation or ingestion. Radium creates a health hazard by both of these mechanisms. Radium decays to radon gas which can be inhaled and serve as an alpha particle emitter. Additionally, radium is very soluble and readily enters the natural hydrologic cycle if allowed to leach from a tailings pond. With a half-life of 1620 years, radium has plenty of time to be taken into the food chain and end up in our bodies, emitting alpha particles. Because the potential health problems are better understood today than ten years ago, and because the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has developed increasingly stringent government regulations, the uranium mining industry applies a high level of technology to the disposal of nuclear wastes. In most cases, low-level radioactive wastes are disposed of at or near the site where they are produced. There are six commercial burial grounds for low-level wastes, but it would not be economical to ship all mine or milling wastes to these sites. A simplified mathematical model of underground conduction heating in a system of limited permeability is presented. The model applies to underground retorting of oil shale, or to reservoirs containing extremely heavy oils. We assume that heat is introduced at a constant rate into a horizontal fracture which communicates between wells. The radial temperature distribution along the fractured surface is approximated by a step-function. Heat transfer away from the fracture is assumed to be by vertical conduction, and all convection effects are neglected. The model also takes into account the possible temperature dependence of thermal conductivity. A general expression for calculating the growth of the step-function temperature distribution with time is derived. The use of this expression and solutions to the one-dimensional heat equation make it possible to construct isotherms. Expressions for calculating .oil recovery, well spacing and heat efficiency are also given. An example calculation is presented for the conduction heating process in oil shale. Finally, the effect of the heat transfer coefficient between the gas and the fracture boundaries is investigated. INTRODUCTION Thermal recovery processes of oil recovery fall into the four general areas of hot fluid injection, forward combustion, reverse combustion and conduction heating. The first three of* these processes have been rather extensively studied in the past decade from both the experimental and theoretical points of view. As a result, it is possible to make reasonable engineering predictions and analyses of these processes. Little attention has been devoted, however, to the conduction heating process other than to note its possible utility.I To a certain extent, conduction heating cannot be divorced from the other regimes cited above, insofar as these provide the source of heat energy. In the conduction heating process, heat is introduced (either by combustion in the forward or reverse mode or by hot fluid injection) into a small fraction of the total reservoir thickness. This fraction may be either a streak of high permeability or an interwell fracture. Heat penetrates by conduction into the adjacent, less permeable regions of the oil-bearing rock, where the direction of conduction is essentially perpendicular to the streak or fracture. The heated product then drains by gravity or is gas driven to production wells. Conduction heating is probably most applicable to systems containing immobile bitumens such as tar sands and oil shale deposits and perhaps to low-permeability reservoirs containing highly viscous crudes. The mechanism also acts in combination with other thermal processes where fingering or overriding of a bed occurs. It seems probable that in at least one field test, conduction heating of this type was very influential.2 In this presentation we give a first approximation to some of the quantitative aspects of conduction heating. Marx and Langenheim3 treated a similar problem where they focused attention upon the injection interval, which spanned the total reservoir thickness. In their model, conduction heat losses to the bounding media imposed a practical limit on the calculated heated area. In the present study, however, we shall confine the injection interval to a small fraction of the reservoir thickness and assume it has no heat capacity. We therefore direct our attention to regions outside the injection interval into which the conduction of heat is beneficial. In particular, we will endeavor to locate specific isotherms in the media bounding the injection interval. Furthermore, we will construct our model to allow the thermal conductivity to vary arbitrarily with temperature. Thus the model will be applicable to underground retorting of shale where variations in thermal conductivity may be important. Subsidence is controlled by a complex com¬bination of mining and geologic factors. For example, a compilation of worldwide data shows that, as the percentage of shale in the overlying rock mass decreases and the amount of sandstone increases, the angle of draw (and the area affected by subsidence) decreases. Limestone in the over¬burden appears to cause a more than twofold decrease in the angle of draw compared to a like amount of sandstone. Increased amounts of sandstone were accompanied by a greater surface subsidence relative to the mining height. The total thickness of overburden did not appear to influence the subsidence magnitude above super-critical panels. The greater the thickness extracted, the smaller percentage of that thickness shows up at the surface as subsidence. The greater the percent of the seam extracted, the greater the subsidence reaching the surface. The maximum subsidence above room-and-pillar panels de¬pends on the pillar height and minimum width as well as the other factors listed.

THE principal manganese deposit of Russia, I one of the four principal sources of the world's supply, lies on the southern slope of the Caucasus Mountains, in what is now the Republic of Georgia, district of Sharopan. Tchiatouri, the principal town, is midway between Tiflis, the capital of Georgia, and Poti, the shipping port on the Black Sea, about 130 " miles distant. The deposit can be most easily visualized by thinking of a nearly horizontal coal seam about 6 ft. thick, outcropping on the slopes about 600 ft. above the Kvirila River. One of the accompanying illustrations shows the river, which nearly bi- sects the district, of approximately 50 sq. miles in area, and with its tributary streams makes the topography rugged, while in the background are the snow-capped peaks of the Caucasus range. Another of the illustrations gives a closer view of the outcrop. The roof and floor of the deposit are good, so the methods of working are quite similar to working a coal seam, especially as most of the mineral is soft enough to be mined with a pick. Little machinery is used, except small cars for underground transportation.

Equipment has been developed to utilize natural 8 Hz electromagnetic fields to measure rock resistivities. Telluric and magnetotelluric surveys have detected resistivity variations associated with geological contacts and metallic sulfide deposits. The fundamenfa1 premises of these methods are illustrated by the results of surveys across a Pleistocene-Precambrian contact in the Ottawa Valley and a near-surface sulfide deposit in Northern Quebec. Such interfaces are characterized not only by variations in apparent resistivity, but also, unexpectedly by the spatial anisotropy of the electric fields and the presence of a strong vertical magnetic field component in their vicinity. Standard geophysical electrical and electromagnetic methods (Heiland, 1940) for the determination of the electrical properties of the ground and the search of good electrical conductors necessitate the use of a transmitter and receiver which are coupled galvanically or inductively through the ground. The electrical properties of the ground are deduced from either the transfer function, or the impulse response, of the transmitter — ground — receiver system. Where deep penetration is desired these methods require powerful transmitters whose weight and size increase the cost and reduce the speed of operation. It is possible however, to resort to another class of electrical prospecting methods which employ ambient, natural electromagnetic fields in place of a transmitter.'-' In the audio and subaudio frequency ranges, these fields are generated by thunderstorm activity. At some distance from the seat of the disturbance, the e.m. fields propagate as plane waves with a horizontal magnetic field component. The incident wave, of course, induces currents in the ground. Where the ground is homogeneous the relation between the horizontal magnetic and horizontal electric fields vectors is particularly simple:' /E/ = \[SpT/H/ (1) where: /E/ = magnitude of horizontal electric field in millivolts/kilometer (RMS) /H/ = magnitude of the orthogonal inducing magnetic field in milligammas (RMS) p = rock resistivity in ohm-meters i = frequency of measurement in c/s In practice, the ground is seldom an homogeneous half space, lateral conductivity variations exist, (in the case of base metal prospecting these are the features actually sought) and the two field vectors are no longer simply related. The ratio of E to H is still useful, however, for the determination of an "apparent" ground resistivity. From a theoretical view point, the general problem of a two dimensional fault or dyke anomaly can be separated into two distinct cases. In the first case, where the e.m. energy propagates in a direction normal to the strike, the horizontal magnetic field remains constant and is oriented along the strike of the formation.3 As shown by d'Erceville and Kunetz," all the information about the anomaly is contained in measurements of the electric field component. In fact, away from the interface, the electric fields are proportional to the square roots of the resistivities:

INTRODUCTION The current study is part of the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) on-going subsidence research program. The long-term objective of the DOE program is to develop analytical methods of subsidence prediction applicable over a broad range of geologic and mining conditions encountered in the United States. The DOE currently has several contracts in progress to develop a sound data base that can be used in the development of predictive models. Dames & Moore is currently under contract to DOE to collect and analyze detailed subsidence and hydrologic data from a coal mine employing longwall mining methods in the Eastern Coal Province. Work under Contract No. DE-AC22-80PC 30335 began in October of 1980 and will continue through September of 1984. The contract includes monitoring of two adjacent longwall panels. This paper summarizes the surface monitoring work that was performed through February of 1982. Mining of the first of the two panels (3 off 3 north) was completed on February 3, 1982. Results of the surface monitoring through completion of this panel are presented and discussed. SITE DESCRIPTION The mine being studied is located in eastern Ohio. Herasymenko (New York University, New York) —The authors' experiments on equilibria between water vapor and liquid synthetic slags represent a valuable contribution to our knowledge of the nature of liquid slags. They can be regarded as a proof of ionic splitting of water molecules dissolved in slags. The assumption that water dissolved in slag was com- pletely ionized was made in my report on hydrogen equilibria in steelmaking as early as 194010. In that paper, the first systematic data were given on the content of ionized hydrogen in acid and basic open-hearth slags. The paper probably escaped the notice of the authors, although they mention the articles published later by other investigators who reported erratic and

THIS chapter and Chapter 19 deal with the heat quantities involved in open-hearth steelmaking, including the thermal efficiency of the furnace as a generator of high-temperature heat, the heat storage in the steel and slag produced and in the furnace walls, and the heats of the various chemical reactions involved in combustion, in the formation of slag, and the refining of steel. The fundamental laws to be considered are the first two laws of thermodynamics as applied to problems involving sensible and potential (or latent) heat only: 1. Heat input equals heat outflow plus storage. 2. Heat may be transferred only from a hotter body to a colder one. The first of these laws relates to the various heat quantities or the heat balance of the process. No one has as yet made an open-hearth heat balance that came out almost exactly balanced. The cause probably lies in the difficulties of accurate temperature and flow-rate measurements at the high temperatures involved and the inherent complexities in flow distribution and air leakage present in any real open-hearth furnace system. Some idea of the magnitude of the heat quantities involved can be obtained by a brief, crude outline of the heat balance of a 90-ton heat of steel. We will assume a 60 to 70 per cent hot- metal charge in a fairly fast working and only moderately efficient furnace, burning fuel oil, with a fuel consumption of around 4 million Btu per net ton of ingots produced. The time from start of charge to tap is 9 hr. During this period, the oil burned represents 360 million Btu and the sensible heat in the preheated air at the port ends is 117 million Btu, so that the total heat input at the ports is 477 million Btu. Heat stored in the steel and slag at the end of the heat, plus the various amounts absorbed by certain bath reactions, amounts to a total of 195 million Btu, but 120 million of this is supplied by the heat in the hot metal and by various heat-evolving reactions in the bath,

The influence of partial decomposition to high temperature bainite on reaction kinetics at a lower temperature has been studied in two alloy steels. Reaction at the lower temperature is retarded by the prior treatment, and the extent of decomposition may be reduced. Interpretation of these results is based on a mechanism involving a limitation in the nucleation and growth of bainite plates. OF the major transformations in steel, the characteristics and general behavior of the bainite reaction are probably the least understood and appreciated. Limitations of space preclude a critical evaluation of the present status of the bainite transformation in this presentation; however, such a treatment will shortly appear elsewhere. Only the salient features pertinent to the present investigation will be introduced briefly here. Although the reaction curve for the formation of bainite is similar to that for a nucleation and growth process, other kinetic features are more in keeping with the martensitic mode of transformation. A definite temperature exists above which austenite will not transform to bainite.1-5 his temperature, which has been designated B., is determined by the composition of the austenite. Unlike other nucleation and growth processes, the amount of austenite transformed to .bainite is a function of reaction temperature. The extent of decomposition increases from 0 at H. to 100 pct at some lower temperature.' , This lower temperature will be designated B1 and appears to be relatively insensitive to austenite composition.% 5 The similarity in the effect of reaction temperature on the bainite and martensite transformations serves to emphasize the close connection between these two decomposition processes. Austenite decomposition in the bainite range proceeds without partition of the alloying elements.8-11 Partition of carbon has been proposed" primarily on the basis that partial transformation to bainite lowers M, and increases the amount of austenite retained at room temperature. Carbon enrichment resuslting from such partition has been employed to explain the influence of reaction temperature on the extent of decomposition.'" It should be noted, however, that no enrichment has been detected experimentally in high carbon steels.1,14,15 Lattice-parameter measurements of retained austenite in steels containing 0.3 to 0.4 pct C have indicated carbon enrichment, 3,10-18 although the split indicative of a high carbon martensite has not been reported. Carbon enrichment, if it does occur, must be highly localized around the bainite plates. Therefore, carbon enrichment does not account for the influence of temperature on the progress of the bainite reaction."' Thermal history is known to influence the martensite transformation through stabilization.20,21 No similar phenomenon in the bainite transformation has been reported. Materials and Procedure Two triple-alloy steels were chosen for this investigation. Their compositions were as given in Table I. These steels were chosen because the pearlite reaction did not interfere with the bainite reaction. Steel K was received in the cast condition and forged from 2 in. square bars to 1/2 x1 3/4 in. plates. The 4340 was received as 11/4 in. hot-rolled rounds. Both steels were homogenized in vacuum for one week at 2300°F in order to minimize segregation. A quenching dilatometer similar to that described by Flinn, Cook, and Fellows" was employed for the kinetic measurements. Dimensional changes were detected by a differential transformer coupled with a high speed recorder. The dilatometer was mounted so that it could be transferred to any one of three furnaces: a nitrogen-atmosphere austenitiz-ing furnace and two salt-bath furnaces for isothermal transformation. Dilatometer specimens were 1/32 x 1/4x 1/2 in. with a gage length of 1.4 in. All specimens were nickel plated in order to minimize decarburization during austenitizing. The austenitiz-ing conditions consisted of 10 min at the temperatures given above. Austenitizing temperatures were controlled to 210°F and transformation temperatures to ±3ºF. The precision of the dimensional measurements was estimated to be ± 5 x105 in. per in. For the first time we are able to publish the official itinerary for the forth-coming Mexico City meeting of 1936. As shown on Page 351, the deluxe special train leaves St. Louis on Thursday. Nov. 5 at 5:30 p.m., returning to St. Louis on Nov. 18 at 8:15 a. m. The schedule provides seven days and six nights in Mexico City with numerous excursions to nearby towns and resorts. The oldest surviving city in' North America is Mexico City, dating back at least to the twelfth century. It was the Aztec capital when Cortez arrived in 1519. The famous cathedral still standing was built on a foundation of sculptured Indian images and the remains of a great Aztec temple. Today it is a city of romance.

Book Review MANAGEMENT AND MEN. By Meyer Bloomfield, Boston. The Century Co., New York, 1919, pp. 584, H.X. 5 1/2. $3.50. This hook is an exposition of English efforts to solve the problem of labor unrest in England. The first six chapters are reprinted from articles published in the Satur-day Evening Post, for whom the author went to England to study the problem at first hand. These articles deal with housing, increased production, eliminating the internal friction in the industrial machine and a chapter each devoted to the view-point of employer and employee. These chapters are written in the easily readable magazine style and give a complete general survey of the particular solution being tried. Perhaps their greatest., certainly not their least, worth lies in the fact that they form a vehicle for unusually voluminous appendices containing in full the famous Whitley Reports which are the basis of the new movement, together with various reports, which, except for this publication, would be largely inaccessible to those inter-ested in this country. The Whitley scheme considers each industry a unit and proposes to establish therein a Joint Standing Industrial Council composed of representatives of employers and employees to consider appropriate matters affecting the industry at large. There is to be a District Council for each industry which will, as its name implies, deal with the clatters pertaining to that interest in. the particular district. The third and last body in this scheme of Industrial Parliament is the Works Committee, which is com-posed of representatives of the management and of the workers employed in particu-lar plants or mines to act in close cooperation With the district quid national machinery. The Whitley or similar schemes have been tried in many communities in England and the book contains interesting comments on the result obtained, it being notable that most of the objections conic from plants which have not tried the scheme. Meyer Bloomfield, the author; is the specialist in industrial personnel problems who organized the industrial service activities of the United States Shipping Board, Emergency Fleet Corporation. P. AMIDST the tumult and the shouting of the times, there are perceptible certain tendencies, quiet though serious, to take stock of the situation with a view to putting our house in order, and of these none is more encouraging than the awakening, interest in the higher education, and especially in technical education. Various committees of the professional organizations have cast much light on the matter and have pointed the way to progress and reform, but their scope is necessarily restricted by the requirements of precision and any excursion beyond these bounds must be undertaken by the unfettered individual who is free to rush in where responsible committees fear to tread. A discussion of the bearing of the higher education on character scarcely lends itself to objective treatment and yet, fraught as it is with imponderables and abstractions, the theme cannot be escaped in any com-prehensive scheme of education. The question is being pressed with growing insist-ence, why these United States, relatively to Europe, are deficient in intellectual output, and the ready reply, "Because America is a new country and Americans are too intent on developing their natural resources," is too facile and too false to carry conviction.

Measurements of the effect of precipitation stresses on the solubility of cementite (Fe3C) precipitates in a iron are reported. Solubilities were determined from measurements of the Snoek relaxation due to interstitial carbon after quenching from various equilibrium treatments. Stress-free precipitates were obtained by a spheroidizing treatment of vacuum-melted Fe 0.06 wt pet C. Subsequent equilibration treatments were designed to suppress nucleation of other precipitates. The results for stress-free cementite give a heat of solution of 14.8 i 0.2 keal per mole and an entropy change of 1.1 i 0.2 eu in the temperature range 400" to 715°C. Comparison with previous data indicates that the heat of solution increases about 6 keal per mole as temperature increases from 700" to 1000°C. Data on self-stressed cementite in quench-aged specimens of Fe 0.013 wt pet C indicate 1) an apparent heat of solution of 12.1 i 0.4 keal per mole in the range 280" to 690°C, 2) a strain energy of- 1.1 keal per mole Fe3C accompanying precipitation at 280°C, and 3') a gradual decrease in the strain energy of precipitation with increasing equilibration temperature. In com-parison with 2 and 3 the strain energy calculated for an isotropic model is 1.7 keal per mole Fe3C. The lower values obtained from the experiment indicated substantial stress velaxation by dislocation motion. WHEN a supersaturated solution of carbon in a iron is aged at temperatures in the range 200o to 700oC, the carbon clusters by interstitial diffusion and forms cementite (Fe3C) precipitate particles. Unstressed cementite has a volume per iron atom 9 pet higher than that of a iron;' hence, cementite precipitate particles are usually under pressure from the iron matrix. The pressure would tend to increase the solubility of cementite in iron.' This report describes anelastic measurements of the solubilities of self-stressed and stress-free cementite in a iron. Previous determinations of the cementite solubility are summarized in Table I. The method of cementite formation for each reference was studied to ascertain the state of stress of the cementite. The results judged to be for stress-free and stressed cementite are distinguished in the table. In the next section an estimate of the stress effect is obtained which is clearly too small to account for the large difference between the previous results in parts A and B of the table. THEORETICAL Let AGO be the standard free-energy change of the reaction Fe3C (eem.) = 3Fe (a) + C (in a) [1] in the absence of stresses. Since cementite precipitates appear to be rather pure10 and the carbon is so dilute in the iron,8 the cementite and iron of Eq. [ I] for the stress-free case have essentially unit activities and the activity of carbon equals its atom fraction xoC Then the stress-free equilibrium is expressed by RT In XoC = -?GO 121 To first approximation the change in the chemical potential of carbon due to the precipitation stresses equals the elastic strain energy W accompanying precipitation of a mole of cementite.2 Hence, in the presence of the precipitation stresses the equilibrium is described by RT In x sq = -?G° + W [3] where xsC is the mole fraction of dissolved carbon in the stressed case. An approximate value of W can be obtained from analysis of the inclusion problem in elasticity theory. The inclusion is a small portion of the matrix phase which has suffered a transformation while still imbedded in the matrix. In the absence of the constraint of the matrix the transformation would be equivalent to a uniform dilational strain eT. Both the matrix (a) phase and inclusion (0) phase are assumed to be homogeneous, isotropic materials. When the a and 0 phases have the same elastic moduli, which is approximately true for iron and cementite,11 the total strain energy per mole ß is12 2µVß(eT)2(3 +4 µx)-I [4]

An experimental study of the movement of markers in the systems Cu/a-brass, Cu/Sna-solid solution, Cu/Ala-solid solution, Cu/Ni, Cu/Au, Ag/Au, employing many types of markers and a variety of temperatures. Marker movement is confirmed and undoubtedly associated with the manner in which atoms move during diffusion. EVERAL years ago Smigelskas and Kirkendall' •S reported measurements on the interdiffusion of copper and a-brass and on the movement of inert markers placed at the original join. These markers were observed to move toward the a-brass side of the join, and from this it was inferred that zinc diffuses in a-brass more rapidly than copper. Similar results were reported a little earlier for the diffusion of solvents into high polymer solids.' This has attracted much attention, particularly from those interested in the mechanism and the theory of diffusion: Seitz3 has employed it in supporting the vacancy theory of diffusion; from the data Darken4 has calculated separate diffusion coefficients for copper and zinc, developing a "phenomenological" theory of diffusion; and Bardeen5 has employed it in constructing a general theory, including therein the work of Seitz and Darken, as has Le Claire. These matters have recently been reconsidered in a sympo~ium.7 Some reason has existed for questioning the work of Smigelskas and Kirkendall.' Their technique consisted in electroplating copper on a-brass, upon the surface of which Mo-wires had been secured, and then diffusing, measuring the extent of diffusion along the normal to the join, and measuring the marker displacement in the same direction by a comparator determination of the distance between Mo-wires on opposite sides of the electroplated brass sample. It has been suspected that the copper plate might have been porous, and that the original interface might have been an imperfect join, both contributing to the transfer of the volatile zinc by vapor transfer;' it has also been questioned whether the marker movement might not in a measure be a property of the marker itself; etc. These legitimate questions require experimental answers; the present paper offers such answers. Moreover, Smigelskas and Kirkendall studied the effect only in the Cu-Zn system and at one temperature; the attention which the work of Smigelskas and Kirkendall has commanded recommends similar

ONE of the perplexing problems that face the translator of an old technical treatise is the question of terms for units of weight and measure. We have used an English word only when it is linguistically equivalent to the Italian one and is a unit of approximately the same size. Libbra and oncia thus become pound and ounce, for the actual weights were within 10 per cent of the modem Troy weights. On, the other hand, the length measures braccio, palmo, and dito, which could be rendered literally as arm, palm, and finger or digit, respectively, have no good English metrological equivalents and it has seemed best to retain the Italian words. The exact transfer of Biringuccio's weights and measures into modern terms is impossible because of the uncertainty as to his standards. Even as late as 1803, when the metric system was first introduced into Italy, practically every city had its own standards. There were, for example, at least eight different palmi, varying from 22.3 to 29.2 centimeters. The values listed below for the various units mentioned by Biringuccio are the Florentine ones, which were also used in Siena and Tuscany: [ ]

REORGANIZING AMERICAN ENGINEERS There are in America approximately 500 engineers' organizations of various kinds, and yet it is estimated in many communities that 30 to 50. per cent. of the resident engineers are not members of any society of engineers. There is no enumeration of the engineers of the country, but estimates range from 100,000 to 300,000, the latter number probably including assistants, such as instrumentmen, draftsmen and inspectors, together with professional engineers. These local, state, regional and national organizations are for the most part independent and have no means for cooperation. Steps toward the improvement of these conditions are being taken in a number of localities and have already been taken in others. Many engineers are giving the matter serious attention. American Society of Civil-Engineers took an important action at the June meeting of its Board of Direction, by, authorizing the creation of a Committee on Development of Am. Soc. C. E. This action is now well known to all representatives on Engineering Council. Other Founder Societies axe reported to be considering similar action. Engineering Foundation, at its meeting on Sept. 12, adopted the following resolutions: Survey of Engineering Organizations BE IT RESOLVED: that the Engineering. Foundation is prepared, the four Founder Societies concurring, to devote its strength and its' income, so far as this may he required, to a study of existing engineering organizations, and from information thus developed to formulate a series of constructive recommendations which may he serviceable in guiding the further development of local and national engineering organizations in their relations to the profession of engineering, to the public and to each other, to the end that a foundation may he laid upon which to establish a broadly planned procedure, which, while recognizing and preserving all that has already been accomplished, shall increase the power of American engineers in upbuilding their profession and in the service they render to society; and RESOLVED: that in accepting the responsibility for such an undertaking, it will be the purpose of the Engineering Foundation to organize the proposed research along the broadest possible lines, to call to its aid highly qualified experts, and to avail itself of the help of agencies which may be willing to cooperate; and RESOLVED: that in proposing this research the Engineering Foundation has no desire or purpose to intrude upon the domain of individual organizations; that it does not propose to control the action of any individual or organization; nor to ask the acceptance of its conclusions; but that its purpose shall he to develop a possible procedure, or a series of such procedures, of such evident, merit that they will appeal to those who are likely to be most interested; it will do this in the belief that in so far as its work may justify the confidence of engineers and of engineering organizations, it will bear its own fruitage.
