In 1034 the Southern Experiment Station of the U.S. Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the University of Alabama began an investigation of the availability of kyanite ores as a source of raw material for the manufacture of refractories. Under this program, gravity concentration and flotation tests have been made on two varieties of Georgia kyariite ore, mica schist and massive. Most of the attention has been directed to the mica schist ores, as they are more widely distributed and seem to offer greater economic possibilities than the massive ores. It is evident that the preparation of kyanite for use as a refractory material involves other considerations than the mere elimination of impurities. A concentration process that eliminates impurities satisfactorily may have to be followed by some additional treatment, since the final product must be of a coarseness and size ratio that will make it suitable for refractories manufacture. So far in the investigation at the Southern Experiment Station of the U.S. Bureau of Mines only the concentration problem has been considered, and this paper is intended as an interim report. Ores The schist ores contain 1 to 9 per cent of kyanite crystals embedded in mica and quartz, with smaller amounts of graphite, garnet and iron oxide and minor amounts of other heavy minerals. The garnet content varies from a trace to a few per cent. The minerals are easily released by moderate grinding. The size of the kyanite ranges from fine needles to crystals 1 1/2 in. long, 1/2 in. wide and 1/4 in. thick. The garnet, quartz and iron oxide grains have a smaller mean mesh than most of the kyanite. The maximum size of the garnet crystals corresponds to about 14 mesh and that of the sand grains is considerably less. Most of the iron oxide is still finer, for the minus 100-mesh size is greatly enriched in Fe²O3. The massive ore consists of radiating masses of kyanite interlocked with quartz, mica, corundum and small amounts of other heavy minerals.

ONE of the most interesting features of the world's platinum situation has been the steady increase of Russian production, which had dropped to 11,000 oz. in 1920, but increased to 92,000 oz. in 1926, and to probably over 100,000 oz. for 1927. It is ex-pected that Russian production of platinum will, be-fore long, closely equal its pre-war production, or approximately 200,000 oz. annually. The world production before the war was around 250,000 oz.; that for 1925 has been estimated at 160,000 oz., and for 1926 probably 170,000 oz. The consump-tion of platinum has, however, decreased. The esti-mate of the International Selling Agency was a de-mand of 130,000 oz. new platinum against a normal pre-war demand of over 200,000 oz. The high price of platinum during the war gave an added impetus to the search for substitutes for the metal, and sev-eral were developed that are now used extensively in place of platinum. The demand for platinum for high-class jewelry, however, was not greatly affected by the high prices, but "white" gold did replace platinum in the cheaper jewelry. Colombia is the most important producer of plati-num, next to Russia, and the production has increased from around 10,000 oz. pre-war production to 55,000 oz. or more in 1927. In 1924 important discoveries of platinum were made in South Africa. Prior to these discoveries practically all platinum was recovered from alluvial deposits, and the South African opera-tions are first to work an ore profitably for the pri-mary recovery of platinum. A number of companies were formed to develop these deposits, but only a few made any real progress. Total production for 1926 was about 5000 oz. The United States production is unimportant; that in Canada has increased to around 9000 oz., principally as a by-product in nickel-copper ores.

ThE basic equations describing continuous zone-melting via the zone-void method were reported by Pfann. Using these equations, a theoretical study was undertaken in this laboratory on the effect of the variation of the significant parameters of the zone-void system. These parameters are the zone length, 1, the heater length, h, and the effective distribution coefficient, k. The object of this study was to determine the effect of these parameters on and (where a = Cp/Cf and ß = Cw/Cf, Cp, C,, and Cf being, respectively, the solute concentration in product, waste, and feed) so that, in future application of this technique to the ultrapurification of materials, the effect of 1 and h would be predictable regardless of the value of k. The basic assumptions made by pfannl were, for the purposes of this study, assumed to hold. For k < 1, the steady-state solute distribution in the stripping section and the shift in this distribution brought about by passage of a void is shown in Fig. 7 of Ref. 1. In this section the definition of k and ß precludes the possibility of ß assuming values less than unity when k < 1. In the course of this investigation it was found that computations based on Pfann&apos;s equations gave values of ß less than unity in the region 1 > k > l/h for almost all values of Ls, where Further computations showed that 6 assumes negative values when k > 1 for many values of L,, 1, and h. COPPER operations in the Congo mean the operations of the Union Miniere du Haut Katanga, because there are no other copper industries there. There is a mine at Bwana M&apos;Kubwa, a little way to the South, in Rhodesia, which has been operated on a small scale, and-another farther south, the Falcon mine, but in quite a different section of the country. This Bwana M&apos;Kubwa mine has recently been reorganized financially and the Minerals Separation interests have taken an extensive share in it, so that it may come into operation. The Union Miniere&apos;s operations are in Katanga, the most southeastern province of the Belgian Congo, and the company&apos;s concession is in the southeastern part of that province. The usual route for going into the country is by way of Cape Town, thence over the South African Railways through Kimberly and Mafe- king to Bulawayo, then by the Beira, Mashonland and Rhodesia Railways to the Rhodesia-Congo border, passing Victoria Falls on the way, and finally by the Belgian road, the Chemin de Fer du Katanga, to Elisa- bethville, the African headquarters of the company. From Cape Town to the border it is about 2150 mi. and from the border to Elisabethville about 158 mi., making a little over 2300 mi. from Cape Town, by rail.

EARLY in 1945 the laboratories of the Southern Research Institute will begin active research investigations on behalf of industrial clients. This achievement has come after four years of planning by a group of Alabama businessmen, and is in partialanswer to an urgent need in the South. Those who conceived the Institute have long realized that a marked relationship exists between scientific research and the economic well-being of the several regions of the country. Clearly, technological research, generally absent in the South, is the medium through which are created new finished goods industries, and the increase of technological research is perhaps the most important long-range project in the South.

DURING late years, the proportion of beileficiated iron ore shipped from the Lake Superior District has increased very rapidly. By benefication is meant washing, screening, drying, sintering or any process by which the grade or structure of the crude ore is improved before shipment. In 1915, only 3,000,- 000 tons, or 9 per cent, of t6e total Minnesota shipment was beneficiated ore, compared with 13,500,000 tons, or 35 per cent, of the total Minnesota shipment in 1925. This increase is, of course, due to the fact that iron and steel can be made more cheaply after beneficiating these ores than they could have been had these ores not been so treated. Fundamentally, however, several causes contribute to the necessity for beneficiating iron ores, such as depletion of the reserves of high-grade ores, the iron ore leasing systems and taxation methods and, at the smelting plants, a better understanding of blast-furnace operations, increased operating costs and increased sulfur content of blast-furnace coke. As economic conditions change, it is by no means certain that the proportion of beneficiated ore shipped each year is going to continue to increase. Undoubtedly some of the beneficiation operations are not economically sound at the present time and what the future has in store for the iron ore industry is problematical. Generally speaking, the cost of fuel for blast-furnace operations will increase as time goes on and in order to continue to produce cheap iron and steel, some of the other costs must be lowered. Freight and labor rates probably can- not be reduced. The cost of producing iron ore cannot be reduced much below the present price. It therefore appears that the best opportunity for maintaining iron and steel prices at their present level in spite of in- creased costs of labor and raw materials is to use. less or cheaper raw materials. This, of course, contemplates an improvement in metallurgical processes all along the line and, as a matter of fact, we can confidently expect these improvements because scientific investigations will undoubtedly be even more productive in the future than they have been in the past.

INTRODUCTION The Luanshya Mine is situated in the southern part of the Zambian Copperbelt. The copper ore deposit is stratiform, and is preserved in a synclinorium known as the Roan/ Muliashi basin. Roan shaft (formally called No.14 shaft) is located at the eastern end of the syncline and is theoldest of the presently operating hoisting shafts, being sunk during the 1930&apos;s. It presently hoists some 45 per- cent of the total Luanshya Mine production. A cross-section through the shaft is shown in figure 1. The ore formation on the south limb is unmined on this section because until recently it was believed that such mining might cause damage to the shaft. This paper examines the influences of adjacent mining on this so-called &apos;shaft pillar&apos;, and describes the mechanics of subsidence of the pillar itself. GEOLOGY AND STRUCTURE Figure 1 shows the general form of folding in the vicinity of Roan shaft. The north and south limbs of the main syncline approach parallelism, with the bottom of the trough fairly smoothly rounded. The axis of the - trough plunges to the west-north-west at 6° - l0°. A brief summary of the major lithologies present in the Roan basin is given in table 1, however, the performance of the overall structure during progressive mining of the ore horizon is controlled by the following features in addition to the mining method. Intraformational Contacts These are characteristically weak in most geological environments. The BC/RL7 contact is an unconformity between moderately weak quartz-biotite schists below (unconfined compressive strength 40 - 80 MN/M 2), and strong quartzites above (U .C .S. 170-200 MN/M2) Subsequent formations are conformable, and planes of weakness are generally the result of contrasting lithology (see below). Weak Interbeds The Rt7, RL6, RL5, RL3 and RU2 horizons consist predominantly of quartzitic rocks, i.e. conglomerates, quartzites and argillites, and as such are generally strong and considered suitable for the positioning of development. Between these however, lie two much weaker dolomitic horizons, the RL4 and RU1. The Rt4 is the main hangingwall aquifer, and must be drained prior to mining. Drainage results in an extremely weak, blocky cavernous horizon which usually requires support if exposed by development. Similarly, the RU1 formation is comprised mainly of dolomites and dolomitic arqillites which are weak and cavernous. In the eastern part of the Roan/

Recent investigations1,2,3,4 have conclusively shown that the strain hardened state of metals depends upon the temperature and strain rate of pre-straining as well as on the total plastic strain. A typical example of the effect of temperature of prestraining on the work hardening of metals is reproduced in Fig 1. When pure aluminum is strained at liquid nitrogen temperature the upper solid stress-strain curve (OFGH) is obtained. But when pure aluminum is prestrained to e2 = 0.153 at atmospheric temperature and the test is then completed at liquid nitrogen temperature, the curve OBCD results. Thus a prestrain E2 = 0.153 at atmospheric temperature gives a flow stress C when continued at liquid nitrogen temperature, whereas a higher flow stress G results when the specimen is strained exclusively at liquid nitrogen temperature to the same strain E2. Consequently the metal strain hardens more rapidly at the lower temperature. Obviously the strain alone is not a measure of the strain hardened state in metals. Inspection of Fig 1 reveals that the flow stress at C is identical with that at F. This fact suggests that a strain E2 = 0.153 at atmospheric temperature induces the same work hardened state as a strain E1 = 0.058 at liquid nitrogen temperature. But this concept of equivalent strains is also in error. If curve CD is shifted to the left so that point C falls on F, point D becomes D&apos;. Inspection of the curves reveals that the rate of increase of stress with strain at C is greater than the rate of increase of stress with strain at F even though the flow stresses are identical. Consequently C and F do not represent identical work hardened states. It therefore becomes important to ascer- tain how the strain hardened states at C and F might differ from each other. In a more recent report1 it was shown that straining at higher rates of strain increases the amount of strain hardening in a manner quite analogous to straining at lower temperatures. These observations suggested that the flow stress is not only a function of the strain but also a function of the strain rate-temperature history of straining, perhaps in accord with the Zener- ?H Hollomon parameter p = Ee /RT (where

EXPERIMENTS, in what has come to be known as flash roasting began some ten years ago. The principle underlying the operation was not a new one, but the experimental work started at that time was the first that was carried through to a logical conclusion, followed by construction and operation of a pilot plant, and then full-scale production. For a short working definition, flash roasting may he considered the instantaneous and complete oxidation of finely ground sulphide particles, partially suspended in air or gas, the oxidation reaction evolving enough heat to make the reaction self-sustaining, or nearly so.

CURRENTLY 12,892 students are enrolled in the mineral engineering schools of the United States and Canada, marking an all-time record high for these schools. It shows a remarkably rapid recovery from the effects of World War II. Enrollment in all the other engineering branches has also increased but not so rapidly as in the mineral engineering branch. Almost all the data in this report are from the eighth questionnaire study of the mineral engineering schools made, as formerly, under the auspices of the Mineral Industry Education Division of the AIME. Every school is represented in the data, for which the authors thank the deans and professors who supplied the information. For this reason, the data of all the studies are comparable, an achievement not always possible in endeavors of this kind. For comparison with the general engineering enrollment situation, data are included from the January 1947 issue of the Journal of Engineering Education.

CITIZENSHIP is a rather abstract subject on which a great deal could be said-a subject on which a great deal is said -and still one which too many of us seldom think about and seldom work at. Too many of us engineers and business men have but a vague idea of citizenship. We think that if we go to the polls on election day and obey the laws scrupulously, with the exception of an occasional traffic violation, we are pretty good citizens and are doing our duty by our city, state, and nation. But when you think it over, that&apos;s a very passive observance of the important right of counting oneself a citizen of a country. There is nothing very positive in that attitude. There is nothing that indicates that we have sufficient interest to really go out and do a job for the -welfare of our country, forgetting any personal advantages or inconveniences that might arise. In other words, this type of voting-on-election- day, law-abiding citizenship does not keep us awake a single minute; it does not take any particular thought or require the expenditure of any time or energy.

THIS paper describes (1) the effect of sodium on the tensile ductility of magnesium-lithium base alloys, and (2) the precautions necessary to avoid sodium contamination. Effect of Sodium on Properties The harmful effect of sodium in magnesium-lithium base alloys has been recognized by other investigators.1,2 However, quantitative data on its effect have not hitherto been published. The effect of sodium on the ductility of an 87 pct Mg-9 pct Li-4 pct Zn alloy is shown in fig. 1. The sodium was introduced by adding sodium chloride to the flux, which consisted of 50 pct LiC1-50 pct KC1. Moderately high ductility was obtained at an indicated sodium content of about 0.05 pct. Actually, the value probably was less than 0.05 pct, be-cause analyses of the lithium, which were more accurate than those of the alloy, indicated that the highest ductility was obtained when its sodium content was 0.02 pct or less. In fact, in alloys having somewhat greater strength than this particular composition, the sodium content of the lithium must be under 0.01 pct to avoid embrittlement. The effect of sodium on the ductility of several alloys having fairly low strength levels is shown in fig. 2. These alloys were melted with a flux containing 75 pct LiC1-25 pct LiF, to which various quantities of sodium chloride had been added. Sodium had no significant effect in pure magnesium but markedly decreased the ductility of the magnesium-lithium-zinc alloy, even though the alloy contained only 3 pct Li. As the lithium content of the binary alloys was increased, the ductility of the sodium-free alloys also increased. However, the effect of sodium on ductility became progressively more pronounced. Sodium raised the minimum hot-rolling temperatures, particularly those of the high-strength alloys, but its effect, in this respect, was less critical than its effect on tensile ductility. For optimum cold roll-ability, a low-sodium content was required. No deleterious effect of sodium on the stability of properties at slightly elevated temperatures was found. Control of Sodium in the Alloys Optimum ductility is obtained in the magnesium-lithium base alloys when sodium-free materials are used. Commercial lithium was formerly the chief source of contamination. Now purified lithium is usually available. When lithium of ordinary purity is used, the effects of sodium can be minimized by using a flux consisting of 75 pct LiC1-25 pct LiF. Bubbling nitrogen through the melt also helps remove sodium. The damaging influence of sodium on the ductility of the magnesium-lithium base alloys was observed very early in the alloy development program. The discovery came about as a result of chemical analyses made on the lithium used in the alloys. Ductile alloys had been made from lithium containing about 0.2 pct Na, whereas the lithium used in the brittle alloys contained about 0.9 pct Na. The first magnesium-lithium alloys were melted under commercial fluxes ordinarily used in melting magnesium alloys. These fluxes were unsuited for scavenging the contaminating sodium, and the resulting alloys were not ductile. Next, a flux containing 50 pct KC1-50 pct LiCl was tried. This was somewhat more effective but still was not satisfactory. After a number of different experimental fluxes had been investigated, one containing 75 pct LiC1-25 pct LiF was adopted. This flux made it possible to obtain good ductility in the alloys. The

Tensile data indicate that over the range of strain rates 10-5 to 10-1 sec-1 and in the temperature range 298° to 743°K the flow stress at a given temperature may be expressed as: C0 = Cem where m changes abruptly at a critical strain rate of 10-2 sec-1. The Zener-Hollomon parameter was tested and found to be invalid except at temperatures exceeding 700° K. Values of AH calculated for temperatures above 700°K ranged from 30 to 47.5 kcal per g-mole. ThE flow characteristics of aluminum and aluminum alloys as a function of temperature and strain rate have been of interest to various experimenters for many years. Trozera et al.1 determined tensile flow curves for pure aluminum and concluded that the combined effect of temperature and strain rate on the flow stress could be related using the Zener-Hollomon parameter. More recently, Hockett2 proposed a relationship between compressive flow stress, temperature, and true strain rate which could be represented by a surface. Holt et al.3 studied strain rate effects on flow stress in a number of aluminum alloys at room temperature. It was determined that there is a critical strain rate above which a strain rate effect is observed. It was also reported that the strain rate sensitivity was significant in aluminum alloys in the "0" condition only. In a recent review paper McQueen4 has considered a number of mathematical expressions which have been used to describe the relationship between stress, strain rate, and temperature. These expressions have been applied to the flow characteristics of a number of different metals and alloys including aluminum. In the present work the strain rate sensitivity of 7075-0 aluminum was determined in the temperature range of 298° to 743°K. The tensile flow stress at 0.2 pct offset was obtained over a nominal strain rate range of 10-5 to 10-1 sec-1. EXPERIMENTAL Threaded tensile specimens were cut from a single heat of 7075-T6 aluminum. The composition of this heat is given in Table I. The test bars had a gage section 1.5 in. long by 0.250 in. diam and conformed to ASTM specification E-8-57T. After machining, the bars were annealed at 413° ± 10°C for 2 hr. They were then cooled to 260°C in 3 hr, and finally air cooled to room temperature. This treatment is commonly used to produce the "0" condition. Load-time curves at constant crosshead speeds were obtained at various temperatures using an Instron testing machine. Crosshead speeds ranged from 0.002 to 40 in. per min. A three-zone resistance tube furnace was used for the elevated-temperature tests. Temperatures were measured at three points along the gage length by means of suitably placed thermocouples. Each tensile bar was held at temperature for 30 min prior to testing and the maximum temperature variation along the gage length was kept below 1°C. In all, 275 samples were tested and each data point plotted is an average of at least two tests. In many cases the point represents up to six tests. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Values of the flow stress at 0.2 pct offset at six different temperatures are plotted vs strain rate on log-log coordinates in Fig. 1. The use of roll scale in the Bessemer process dates back, to the best of our knowledge, at least 20 years. It was first used by the Ohio Steel Go., Youngstown, Ohio (now the Ohio Works of the Carnegie Steel Co.) under the direction of Sam McDonald, Superintendent of the Bessemer Department at these works. Two 10-ton vessels and one blowing engine capable of blowing one heat at a time were employed. The object of using the scale was to shorten the length of the blow, or in other words, to increase the production with the same equipment. Various means were tried out for introducing the roll scale into the bath of molten iron: It was shoveled into the vessel before the heat was charged, so that the metal would flow over the scale; it was shoveled into the bath after the vessel was turned up; it was dumped into the empty iron ladle by the wheelbarrow-load, and at times was dumped on top of the molten metal in the iron ladle. But the practice of introducing the scale into the iron ladle had to be abandoned on account of danger from explosions and of skulling the ladles. It was soon learned that the proper place to charge the scale was in the empty vessel, so that when the molten iron was poured into the vessel it flowed over the scale, causing a considerabIe reaction to take place before the heat was turned up. Eventually, cylindrical chutes similar to those now in use were installed. Into these chutes the scale is dumped and carried into the empty vessel. Before this convenient means of introducing the scale was adopted, the Ohio Works had satisfactorily demonstrated that roll scale would increase production, by blowing 107 heats in one 12-hr. turn (1,087 tons) with one blowing engine, blowing one heat at a time; whereas, prior to the use of scale, the best practice at these works was about 80 heats under the same conditions. In using roll scale and other oxides of iron to facilitate and control the refining of pig iron in the converter, the Bessemer plant has borrowed one of the most active agencies used in the open-hearth process with, as would be expected, much the same results. The effect of such additions to the Bessemer charge may be discussed as to the influence of this practice on quality, production and cost.

Back pressure test data on natural gas wells are short time test data of unsteady state nature. Performance curves from which unsteady state effects have been eliminated, called stabilized performance curves, are necessary for understanding the behavior of gas wells and for scheduling gas fields for periods up to 20 years. A calculation procedure has been developed whereby three day, seven day, 30 day, or other duration stabilized performance curves may be calculated from back pressure test data. Such curves are essential for correct gas deliverability calculations and gas field scheduling. I NTRODUCTION The manner in which a back pressure test is made will affect the slope of the back pressure curve because the radius of drainage changes with the length of time that the well is allowed to flow. The reciprocal of the slope of the back pressure curve is defined as n in Equation 1 and varies from 0.5 to 1.0. If the flow is viscous and the radius of drainage constant, n will have a value of 1.0. Because of turbulence in the formation near the wellbore, the pressure drop is usually greater than the viscous flow pressure drop and the exponent n is frequently less than 1.0. In addition, since the radius of drainage moves away from the well-bore during the test, the gas flows a greater and greater distance as the test proceeds, with a resulting increased pressure drop at the high flow rates, and, again, n for the test tends to be less than 1.O. The effect of the changes in the radius of drainage may be calculated and the results used in preparing stabilized performance curves for fixed values of the radius of drainage. Such curves can be made for a defi- nite time period, such as three day, seven day, or 30 day stabilized performance curves. These cukes will show the effect of turbulence near the wellbore and can be used to predict the performance of the gas well at any flow rate or for any production period. In order to discuss the importance of the radius of drainage quantitatively, it should be defined. Muskat" defines the radius of drainage as follows: "... the radius of drainage gives the distance from the well to which the approximately steady state condition has been established ... it being assumed that no gas is removed from any point until the radius of drainage has passed that uoint." An eauivalent definition of the radius of drainage is that radius at which the extrapolated portion of the steady state portion of the pressure gradient gives a pressure equal to the shut-in reservoir pressure. This definition is also implied in the back pressure equation. The radius of drainage is, then, the distance into the reservoir from which the gas appears to originate at any time. It is, however, only a useful concept and does not actually exist. Fig. 1 illustrates the definition of the radius of drainage. At the end of each flow period the radius of drainage may depend on three factors: (1) the duration of each flow period; (2) the rate of gas production; and (3) the rate and duration of the previous flow periods. In general, back pressure tests are conducted with various lengths of production time and at various flow rates. Each individual back pressure test, therefore, requires an individual analysis. The calculations of the change in the radius of drainage have been made, however, for the case of equal flow periods for all four production rates and several sets of increasing flow rates. Fig. 2 illustrates the results of such calculations made by the method of Cornell and Katz2 for the case of 8, = 50,000 and the flow rate increasing in the ratio 1.0:2.0:3.0:4.0 for each flow period. The increase in the radius of drainage during the test is apparent.

TO certain people the name of Northern Rhodesia brings only a vague recollection of a distant country somewhere in Africa; to others, it means a big game territory and the opportunity for excellent shooting; to some, a land of sunshine and peace; but to mining men the name signifies the land where the latest discoveries of copper ore are astonishing the mining world and bid fair, in a few years, to make Northern Rhodesia one of the largest copper- producing countries. There is a fascination about this part of the globe that is somewhat similar to southern California, and at the same time there is that feeling of mystery peculiar to a tropical climate. Perhaps it is the isolation, the fear of wild animals, or the influence of an undefinable something which cannot be expressed.

1. Introductory Remarks.—The Haile Gold Mine is in Lancaster county, South Carolina, 3 1/2 miles east of Kershaw station on the Charleston, Cincinnati and Chicago Railway. It was first opened about, the year 1832, and since that time has passed through various fortunes. Many different operations have been practiced here for extracting the gold : panning, grinding in Chilian mills or arrastras, stamping, the Designolle process, dry-crushing, and finally the Thies process of barrel-chlorination, which has now been in successful use for 2 1/2 years, and by which 36,000 tons of ore have been treated profitably. The Thies process is in brief the treatment of dead-roasted auriferous concentrates (pyrite, sometimes also chalcopyrite, as at the Phœnix mine, Cabarrus Co., N. C.) with nascent chlorine, without &apos; artificial pressure or exhaust, in lead-lined iron cylinders; the throw-
