Coal is a valuable energy source in New Zealand and has been mined from the West Coast for over 100 years. Stockton Mine is New Zealand's largest opencast coal producer supplying around 1.5 Mt of hard coking and thermal coal to international markets annually. The Stockton Plateau forms an extensive, gently inclined dip slope on erosion resistant Lower Eocene Brunner Coal Measures unconformably overlying basement rocks. The dip slope rises 600 - 1000 masl, locally dissected by fault scarps and present-day fluvial systems, some of which are deeply incised. Within the Mt Augustus Mining Block overburden comprises of a 30 - 40 m thick sequence of fluviatile, coarse to granular coal measure sandstones. High quality coking coal is preserved as a gently dipping, 10 - 12 m thick seam. High and sometimes very steep cliffs of jointed overburden shape the skyline escarpment, above steep forested slopes and gullies. As mining has progressed at Mt Augustus individual coal blocks are progressively becoming more technically challenging. This paper outlines the scientific approach taken by Solid Energy International and mining contractors to carefully unlock many thousands of tons of coal whilst protecting nearby flora and fauna from the impacts of dislodged rock and other blasting side-effects. The strategy involved: an expert-driven onsite risk assessment,formulation of a management plan to manage impacts,conducting an in situ vibration research program, andanalysis of results and operational designs to eliminate potential environmental problems.

BATMINÖ, BATMINEÖ, BATMINDÖ are an abbreviation for Business Analysis Tools for Mining, Mine Evaluation and Mine Design respectively. BATMINP are proprietary tools customised to suit individual client requirements. The first suite of tools provides for analysis and evaluation of open pit mining equipment alternatives and includes fleet selection, fleet sizing and production, productivity and economic outcomes. The models address all mine process activities including drilling, blasting, loading, hauling and auxiliary services. All models are built to provide for simultaneous evaluation of multiple alternatives that are time and condition related. Provision is made for modelling from first principles and/or default or shortcut inputs. Sensitivities to key input parameters are easily performed and consistent logic is applied throughout the process. The models are built to provide key outputs in a format suitable for presentation and documentation. Provision is also made in the models for validation of both inputs and outputs through benchmarking, back analysis and budget comparison. The same models can be used for short interval (12 month) planning and control, medium-term (three to five years) and long-term life-of-mine (LOM) planning. Millions of dollars are spent each year on mining plant and equipment. Decisions that impact on the medium and long-term are made. BATMINP tools have been used to perform studies with good results and in most cases the studies have been validated through back analysis and comparing model outcomes to real data.

Mineral formations, accumulated during technogenic activities greatly influence an economic and ecological situation in the Kola North. On the one hand, the dumps from extraction of mineral resources, tailing ponds of beneficating plants, ash dumps, wastes of metallurgical and mechanical engineering productions destroy the regionÆs environment and require taking certain measures and costs to bury or protect from weathering, oxidation, etc. On the other hand, technogenic mineral formations contain a lot of valuable scarce components. The amount of solid wastes increases annually, causing damage to ecology and economy. Researches conducted in recent years showed a possibility and economic expediency of comprehensive processing of wastes from different enterprises in Murmansk region and their use for production of new competitive commodity output, possessing high consumer properties. Thus, involving mineral wastes from Khibiny apatite deposits into hydrometallurgical industrial processing provides the basis for setting up a large beneficating-metallurgical complex. In this case ores and wastes from other deposits on the Kola Peninsula, containing titanium, rare, rare-earth and other valuable elements, may be involved into processing. Establishing such a complex will allow to organise a deep processing of natural resources, utilise some production wastes, improve ecological security and supply production with competitive output. Expanding the complex implies not only involving new mineral raw material into processing, but mainly deepening raw material processing, maximum utilisation of local natural resources and obtaining a wider variety of prime products.

This paper looks at recent advances in the United Kingdom (UK) tunnelling industry with particular reference to the A3 Hindhead Project. A 1.8 km long twin bore tunnel is the centrepiece of the A3 Hindhead scheme, which commenced construction in 2007 and is being delivered under a UK Highways Agency early contractor involvement (ECI) contract. The proposed construction methodology is progressive mechanical excavation of a horseshoe-shaped tunnel with shotcrete installed close behind the face using robotic spraying equipment. The tunnelling medium is a æsoft rockÆ sandstone for which there was little previous tunnelling experience, requiring extensive geotechnical investigations and an innovative approach to lining design. A 240 m long section though sandy material utilising a steel pipe umbrella is also required. This paper describes the development of the tunnel planning and design including the most recent developments in UK road tunnels. The innovative approach to the design of the following is discussed:the æpermanentÆ primary lining,an observational technique allowing optimisation of the steel pipe umbrella design,a plain concrete secondary lining designed for resistance to a hydrocarbon fire, anda spray-applied membrane.

The chemistry of cyanide solutions is complex, this complexity being responsible for the ability to act as complex-forming agents in metal dissolution processes, among them gold and silver. Such ionic species are used in hydrometallurgical processes, in particular in gold extraction and electro-plating. Due to the high toxicity of cyanide, the discard of effluent from processes and/or industries demands rigorous treatment so as to minimise its concentration. Among the conventional chemical treatment of such effluents one can mention SO2/air; biological degradation; oxidation by using hydrogen peroxide; oxidation by sodium hypochlorite, etc. However, the electrolytic recycling process is also promising for cyanide recovery and offers the possibility of recycling it to the aforementioned industrial processes. Such a process does not use additional chemicals but enables direct re-utilisation to the main process aiming at adjusting the cyanide concentration.

This paper examines the recent trend towards sustainability reporting and the application of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) æSustainability Reporting GuidelinesÆ. It also reviews reporting in the context of the Australian Minerals Industry Code for Environmental Management, as well as the status of public sustainability reporting globally in the minerals industry. The public reporting of environmental, health and safety, social/community and economic performance has evolved over the past two decades. Initially, separate and to some degree disparate documents were produced to report performance in each distinct area. In the early to mid 1980Æs some organisations had begun to report their environmental performance through some minor commentary in their annual financial reports or through ætokenisticÆ leaflets, often used as public relations exercises. Due to more media coverage and an elevated level of public scrutiny, organisations are no longer merely reporting their good performance, but also their bad and indifferent performance. In recent years these once separate environment, health and safety and community public reports have further evolved to become more integrated, reflecting organisations embarking on the reporting of their progress towards sustainable development. The primary factor in driving the evolution of sustainability reporting has been the increasing influence of stakeholders. Two groups of external stakeholders that have had a significant influence over public sustainability reporting in recent years have been non government organisations (NGOs) and socially responsible investment funds. Significant expenditure is involved in the preparation and publication of a sustainability report however many organisations do not appear to have examined in detail what they are really trying to achieve from their public reporting process. It is important to establish objectives for the public reporting process to achieve maximum benefits. Without a framework of public reporting objectives, the benefits of the reporting process to the organisation will not be recognised and the considerable expenditure involved will be increasingly difficult to justify. We believe that by focussing on the process rather than the document, significant benefits to the organisation can be gained. Indeed, with a proper framework of objectives and targets, the reporting process can be used as a vehicle to drive organisational change, implement management systems and improve performance. An idealised framework for a public sustainability reporting process sees the organisationÆs sustainability policies drive the entire process and determine the sustainability objectives. Specific targets are then set to realise those objectives. The targets will govern performance indicators that should be used to measure the success of target achievement and which will also define what data need to be collected. Evaluation is a key component of the reporting process to measure the success of target achievement and progress in realising objectives, as well as review the need for new targets to be set. The actual production of a public document is only one, albeit important, component of the overall reporting process. The challenges that lie ahead for sustainability reporting primarily relate to the integration of environmental, social and economic performance reporting as organisations integrate their approach to these areas. This will only happen as the culture of an organisation changes to not only accept the principles of sustainable development but to implement those principles in daily operations. The reporting process has the potential to drive that cultural change by communicating the organisationÆs sustainability objectives and setting challenging targets for their realisation. Public sustainability reporting will only achieve its maximum value when it forms an integral part of an organisationÆs sustainability management system and culture.

Fluor, together with our clients, has yielded significant reductions in the total cost of mining projects by employing a systematic and methodical process of cost reduction. This paper outlines this structured approach to reducing the total cost of projects through the gathering of information, the evaluation of the zero base design, and the development of the execution strategy for the project in the study phase.Over the recent iron ore boom the cost of growth projects escalated rapidly due to a variety of factors including the engineering cost of re-designing facilities, construction in remote areas and an increase in the ‘perceived’ capital requirements for maintainable and operable facilities.Fluor has made strategic steps towards safely reducing the capital intensity of projects, by working with clients to develop zero base designs which utilise the minimum technical requirements in order to meet the function of the plant and then add cost for safety, maintenance and operability only where clearly justified.This paper has set forth a structured three phased approach to focus the team on reducing capital cost while maintaining a low increase in engineering effort.The initial ‘gather’ phase focuses the team on acquiring information and identifying decisions that will need to be made so that the team can prioritise and focus the attention on areas that will provide the greatest benefit. Within this phase the identification of zero base design requirements, review of lessons learnt and analysis of capital cost levers, allows the team to identify the key decisions on the project that will affect the capital cost.In the subsequent ‘evaluation’ phase the team established the zero base design, using the hierarchy of cost reduction as a guide to focusing the team’s attention on high yielding cost saving opportunities.In the final phase the team develops the execution strategy which will yield the least cost using strategies and tools such as modularisation, standardisation, replication, strategic sourcing and 3D design.CITATION:Merrells, J, 2017. The Anglo American phosphate mine is located in the Brazilian state of Goiás and possesses one of Brazil’s most important phosphate rock deposits, with the site being the country’s second largest producer of phosphate rock concentrate. Despite the site having been in operation since 1979, the mining team only started using explosives in 2004 when rocks with greater hardness started to appear in the mine’s geological profile. Rock excavation was previously performed mechanically. Until 2013, only rocks with high hardness were blasted, this following the standard drilling grid that was defined in 2004 without any changes in the blast parameters. The aim of this paper is to show how fragmentation optimisation has yielded positive results at all stages of the production chain, from the mine to the mill passing through an impact hammer crusher, a rod mill and ball mill, operating in close circuit with hydrocyclones.While incorporating the mine to mill holistic approach during the operational integration, the focus was on defining the blasting domains and respective optimal fragmentation and measuring the benefits of blasting in terms of reduction in energy and grinding media consumed in the comminution processes. In the first stage, the blasting team made changes to the blasting parameters and assessed the effects of these changes on fragmentation using computer software and on-site measurements. This generated a database that made it possible to divide the mine into blasting domains. For the second stage, teams from the plant, geology, mine planning and operation departments jointly made comparisons between the performance when processing stockpiles, which only included high hardness blasted ore (20–30 per cent of blasted ore). Changing the drilling grid’s size from 3.0 m × 3.8 m to 2.0 m × 2.6 m for high hardness rock with the presence of silicates resulted in a 40 per cent reduction in the P80 for the blasted material (from 459 to 278 mm), while changing the grid from 3.0 m × 3.8 m to 2.6 m × 3.2 m for high hardness rock without the presence of silicates generated a reduction of 25 per cent (from 270 to 204 mm). There were gains observed from the measurements at the mineral processing plant in terms of specific energy spent on comminution and on the consumption of grinding bodies in the rod mill. No one process, product or effect of the minerals sector can be viewed in isolation when addressing sustainable development. Meaningful assessments of the minerals sector require that its processes and production are drawn together in a generic framework that gives a holistic view of its performance and progress. Lifecycle Assessment is increasingly accepted as an appropriate means of constructing such a framework. It is a step beyond using the simplistic concept of the triple bottom line of social, environmental and economic performance to drive and communicate sustainable development. However, fundamental questions need to be raised about the scope and purpose of lifecycle assessment, such as what effects and performances should be assessed, for whom should they be assessed, and what performance indicators should be used and how should they be selected. The principles of eco-efficiency, industrial ecology, The Natural Step (TNS) and other pertinent philosophies and initiatives driving mineral sector sustainable development are outlined to support a lifecycle stewardship vision for the minerals sector. Articulating this vision through a holistic lifecycle indicator system showing inputs and outputs, natural partnerships, effects on community, environment and economy facilitates recognition of problems, opportunities and partnerships that can be usefully pursued.

The factors influencing mobile equipment fleet cost and performance commence at the time of mine planning and continue to exert an influence over the life of the mine. These factors must be understood at the early stages of any operationÆs planning process as they continue to impact both positively and negatively on fleet performance and operating cost throughout the life of the mine. The key factors examined in this paper include: grades; rolling resistance; fragmentation and truck loading.

Whether you are an employee, contractor or consultant working in the mineral industry, there are pressures to deliver the best possible performance. Technical professionals are usually driven by an internal desire to perform to a high standard because of personal pride in their profession, but there are an increasing number of external requirements to demonstrate that the actions taken were based upon reasonable grounds and that the work conformed to current best practice. People expect these best practice procedures to be followed and governments are now requiring those tendering for contracts to be registered in some way and to be participants in quality assurance schemes. One is not immune to these pressures just because you are working in a less legislatively sophisticated developing country in the circum-Pacific rim (pacrim) region.   Among the external pressures are the general ethical requirements of the professional body to which the person usually belongs, e.g. The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM), which are further elaborated upon in various Codes and Guidelines on specific matters, e.g. JORC (ore reserves reports) and VALMIN (assessment and valuation reports). These are outlined and discussed. Also, AusIMM's Chartered Practicing Status (CPS) Proposal is outlined in the context of other Pacrim countries approach to registering of technical professionals, which is a way of ensuring that minimum standards of qualifications, experience, competence and repute are demonstrable to ones employer (or client), peers and the wider community, including government.   Today, in the external working scene, there are many laws (particularly those applicable to the corporate and environmental spheres), with which contractors/consultants and even employees must fully comply, or else face criminal sanctions involving huge fines and imprisonment. These, too, are outlined and discussed. One must be able to mount a due diligence defence to avoid or mitigate these consequences.   Personal liability in the context of the day-to-day performance of one's duties has thus become a major concern to the technical professional and the ways in which it can be ameliorated, or insured against, are described. However, for some mineral industry practitioners, the problem is exacerbated because. of their general ignorance of the extent of their personal liability exposure. This paper intends to address this ignorance and to heighten general awareness of personal liability issues, as well as proposing some simple ways to limit this liability.

Enhancing the understanding of gravity flow in caving operations is a key factor in the design, operation and success of caving methods. Consequently, much research has been performed to increase knowledge about gravity flow. Many valuable theories have been gained from different research approaches, which include physical modelling, numerical modelling and a limited number of full-scale tests. Recent advances in technology have allowed Codelco Chile to carry out trials using Smart Markers technology. This technology was used in Esmeralda mine’s Block-2 at El Teniente mine from August 2012 to January 2015. This paper aims to determine the characteristics of the extraction zone and obtain the data that will allow greater understanding of gravity flow for design and draw control purposes.The collected data from recovered markers were analysed using a linear interpolation of both the initial position of the markers and drawbell accumulated drawn tonnage. For each drawpoint in the trial, the regularity or irregularity of flow was analysed based on the recovered markers and the drawn tonnage. Correspondingly, the relationship between flow characteristics and observed fragmentation in drawpoints was analysed. The gravity flow of the Smart Markers revealed that current drawpoint spacing provides the interaction conditions of adjacent flow zones. However, it is possible to increase the drawpoint spacing while allowing caved rock to be extracted from the major and minor apexes.The results of this research also verified that full-scale test data are the predominant factor in the production level design and production control at El Teniente mine.CITATION:Garcés, D, Viera, E, Castro, R and Meléndez, M, 2016. Gekko Systems Pty Ltd engaged in the test work, design, manufacturing and commissioning of the pre-concentration plant at Silver Standard Resources Inc’s Pirquitas mine in the north western Jujuy province of Argentina. Testing of the ore at coarse feeds of between 2 and 12mm returned probable recoveries of up to a total of 95% silver into 50% of the mass fed to the InLine Pressure Jigs (IPJ’s). The plant has been designed and built based on the test results to include a preparation screen to bypass the fines that are naturally higher in grade and repulping of the coarse which is then pumped to three parallel trains of 2-stage IPJ roughing-scavenging. The target 50% yield to concentrate passes over a dewatering screen and the solids are returned back to the mill feed conveyor. The IPJ tails are transferred to a dewatering screen and solid rejects are stockpiled off the end of a transfer conveyor. All dewatered underflow products are processed via hydrocyclones to recover dirty water for use back into the IPJ circuit and return entrained fines to the fines bypass line.With the sulphide orebody being processed, the results from operations to date have shown that plant performance is matching the original laboratory sulphide ore testwork data. The objective of the pre-concentration step is to both reject gangue and achieve grades between 300-400g/t Ag to the float circuit as flotation recoveries are maximised within this range. The plant currently achieves overall upgrades of approximately 150% of feed grade with the IPJ only circuit producing an average 180% increase from calculated feed grade.

The Mt Tom Price orebody of Hamersley Iron Pty Limited consists of a folded hematite - shale sequence capped by a layer of goethite. Consequently, variations in iron content occur within the ore body, and as the overall grade is below that required to make specification products, selective mining must be carried out. A necessary preliminary to quality control of products based on selective mining is the production of advance data on the tonnages and grades of material to be expected in future mining areas. Bench plans showing zones of different grades and types of material anticipated are prepared from structural geological information. The grades of materials on a bench are essentially governed by the positions and attitudes of the shale bands. Quality control is exercised by blending different grades and types of material in primary crusher feed. Iron grade is the prime grade consideration although sometimes the level of phosphorus content must be considered. Pre-production grades are determined from assay of samples taken from blast hole cuttings. As shales are more friable than hematite, product fines are always lower in iron grade than the lump product. The realisation of contract specification grade is more difficult with fines than with lump, so maintaining the correct fines grade becomes a prime factor in quality control. Control of fines grade is presently effected by aiming for an appropriate feed grade to the primary stockpile. Studies to estimate fines grade directly by qualitatively taking into account material types are in progress. Quality control measures are checked by monitoring the crushing and screening plant output, and taking appropriate compensatory actions in the mine when required. Minor fluctuations in quality of fines can be blended out on stockpiles. The quality control measures described ensure constant quality products, and a good recovery of high grade material from the deposit.

Study on Iron Ore Sintering with High Proportion of Specularite Concentrates Specularite iron ores have poor hydrophilicity and ballability as well as bad high-temperature reactivity, which restricts the large-scale application in the sinter and pellet production. In order to make the best use of the specularite concentrates, a novel process of Composite Agglomeration Process (CAP) is applied in this research. By the CAP, the percentage of specularite concentrates in the sinter mixture is increased to no less than 40 per cent as well as the coke breeze dosage is reduced by 0.3 per cent~0.6 per cent. Moreover, all the sintering indexes are obviously improved compared with the traditional sintering process. Researches on the metallurgical performances shows the finished composite agglomerates are high-quality burdens for blast furnaces. This investigation can provide an effective route to utilize the inferior specularite concentrates in the sintering.

Since October 1972, New Zealand Steel Mining Ltd has loaded around ten million tonnes of ironsand concentrate from single-point mooring buoys located off-shore at Taharoa on the west coast of the North Island of New Zealand. Before the first off-shore loading system was installed a considerable research effort was applied to proving the slurry loading technique. Subsequently the system has been expanded and a new buoy, pipelines and pumping system were installed in early 1978. Since then 110 000 DWT class ore carriers have been loaded at rates of around 2600 tonnes per hour through twin submarine pipelines. This paper reviews the operation of the ship loading system and attempts to answer the question: 'If the Taharoa operation were to be planned in 1980, would the same research spending be necessary or have published research results since, made such practical tests unnecessary?'

Suddenly, mining has been thrust into the limelight. It has a large image that casts its shadow over New Zealand. Is it any wonder that resistance has heightened and that an almost unprepared populous is currently struggling to protect the very land they hold dear. Next to the atomic bomb, mining has the demonstrated power to massively change the land and its side effects can pollute many miles beyond the operation. During the past year, New Zealand concern over the possible effects of the mining proposals has become acute. This was specially so in the areas of special environmental quality, such as the Coromandel, and here a very unhappy situation has arisen.

Forty one whole rock samples from the Gold Cross low-sulfidation epithermal Au-Ag deposit have d18O values that range from 4.4 to 9.3 per mil, with an average value of 7.0 per mil. Unaltered and weakly altered rocks have d18O values greater than eight per mil, and the orebody is surrounded by samples that are depleted in 18O. A strongly silicified sample adjacent to the Empire Vein System has a d18O value of 9.0 per mil, similar to previously reported analyses of vein quartz (7.0 to 11.7ë, average 9.4ë). This suggests that, in detail, Golden Cross may have a zone of 18O-enriched wall rocks in the core of the deposit, adjacent to the main underground veins. Although some workers have suggested that stable isotope geochemistry may provide useful information for epithermal mineral deposit exploration, at Golden Cross this is not the case. Alteration minerals, major elements and trace elements all define larger, less ambiguous halos than the zone of 18O-depleted wall rocks.

Metals are well suited to sustainable development goals. They are not biodegradable and have virtually an unlimited lifespan and the potential for unlimited recyclability. Thus metals can be considered as renewable materials. However mineral resources, the source of primary metals, are ænon-renewableÆ as their supply is finite, but this does not necessarily mean scarcity. In this paper the results from a series of Life Cycle Assessments of primary metal production processes for copper, nickel, lead, zinc, aluminium and steel have been used to examine how metals may contribute to societyÆs transition to sustainable development. Particular issues considered include:current metal reserves and how these may change in the future; some of the environmental impacts (Total Energy, Global Warming Potential and Acidification Potential) associated with primary metal production and how they will be exacerbated by declining ore grades; new processing technologies with lower energy consumptions and improved metal extraction efficiencies that will reduce reserve depletion and environmental impacts; increasing the utilisation of æmetals in useÆ by recycling, with particular reference to aluminium; and the potential impact of a carbon tax on metal prices and how this may influence the ways in which metals are used in the future.

This paper describes a physical modelling program that recreated block cave propagation in a geotechnical centrifuge. A brief description of the design of the test along with the sample material and monitoring equipment is given. The samples tested showed caving behaviour and fragmentation distributions that one would expect from caving mines, with one cave deviating due to pre-existing major discontinuities in the sample. A series of fractures formed ahead of and parallel to the cave, implying that an extensional failure mechanism may play a larger role in cave development than previously thought. The results of acoustic emission monitoring of the tests show a seismogenic zone advancing ahead of the cave; however, the quantity and quality of the data is too limited to draw any further conclusions.CITATION:Cumming-Potvin, D, Wesseloo, J, Jacobsz, S W and Kearsley, E, 2016.
