The paper considers Aboriginal responses to large-scale mining, including Indigenous attitudes towards land access for exploration and project development. The core question, in which I have been interested for some time (Trigger 1997a; 2000; 2001), is: what are the significant factors affecting responses among Indigenous communities to mining exploration and development project proposals?

The Epithermal and Mesothermal Gold Prospectivity modelling projects carried out by Crown Minerals provided explorers in New Zealand with a new compilation of historical exploration data combined with new geological information from the GNS QMap 1:250,000 scale mapping project. These data were used to produce predictive mineral potential maps for gold mineralisation in New Zealand. The aim of these projects, to stimulate mineral exploration and investment in exploration, has been successful with eight new companies acquiring new tenement positions and committing significant exploration expenditure to exploring in New Zealand in the coming years. The projects were done at a national scale and consequently not all exploration data were compiled into the prospectivity models. Several of the new companies recognised the value of the prospectivity modelling work and committed exploration funds to continue the modelling process. They recognised a need to compile the remaining data and run the models again to allow detailed exploration targeting. Detailed data compilations including digitising historic exploration stream sediment sample, rock chip sample, soil sample and drilling data has been completed. New models have been completed in Otago for mesothermal gold mineralisation and in the Coromandel and Northland for epithermal gold. The new models have been compared with the original regional scale models and used to target prospect scale exploration. This work has allowed exploration models for epithermal and mesothermal mineralisation in New Zealand to be refined. More importantly this work has identified significant areas with potential to host gold mineralisation with little or no systematic geochemical data including soil sampling or drilling. Exploration work programs have been designed to acquire these missing data and exploration funds have now been committed to test the areas highlighted by the prospectivity modelling. In summary, the Epithermal and Mesothermal Gold Prospectivity modelling work has successfully attracted new investment and ideas to the exploration scene in New Zealand. The projects had an estimated cost of NA$250 000 and will in the next two years, just through exploration expenditure, attract more than NZ$10 M in investment. If a mine is discovered the return on investment will be considerably greater.

Scheelite mineralisation east of the main divide in' the Southern Alps of New Zealand was originally identified by Royden Thompson who is now a geologist with the NZ Geological Survey. This mineralisation was brought to the attention of CRA in 1978. Reconnaissance surveys were carried out in 1979 to delineate the extent of the mineralisation. This was undertaken using ultraviolet light examination of the sediments within the major drainages in the Southern Alps. This defined tentative zones of prospective mineralisation. As a result of this, preliminary reconnaissance, exploration licences were applied for -those areas in which indications of scheelite mineralisation were strongest. A total of 1737 km2 of ground was applied for within four exploration licences. These covered the main Southern Alps mountain chain between the Haast/Wanaka highway and the Mt Cook National Park.

Thermal method of diagnostic as a nondestructive monitoring is based on data logging of infrared radiation from heated surface or from the associated thermal field. Monitoring of gearcases and motors hidden faults, such as, bearing degradation (deep-seated wears and tears, fretting wear, spalling and jamming solids of revolution) is closely related to high variations in temperature. The use of portable thermal imaging devices provides considerable advantages due to: easy remote access to the unit under test even when it is operating; minimum time required to obtain information and an opportunity for a real-time diagnosis of the tested subject's condition.

At the Red Dome and Mungana deposits in north Queensland, Australia, it is proposed that mineralisation and alteration developed as a 'telescoped' overprinting continuum, ranging in style from hypothermal to epithermal, reflecting the major changes that developed in the regional setting over the period circa 325 - 290 Ma. Regional assessment suggests that this also applies to many other precious and base metal deposits within a 40 km length of the host Siluro-Devonian Chillagoe Formation.   A ten stage paragenetic sequence of structural preparation, multi phase intrusion and associated mineralisation, alteration and brecciation is postulated for the Chillagoe district.

The GPS and information technology industries are now applying considerable development effort to what is being termed machine control and machine information systems, in particular focusing on the industries the of mining construction and agriculture. GPS based systems are demonstrably finding common acceptance and adding commercial value to many machine applications in industry. This has been the first step in the evolution of the information age that is now reforming mining practices. Adding the technologies of wireless data communication, modem computer databases, and networked PC's mining is on the verge of a new era in overall process management. This paper is a general discussion of what the information age means to miners and a general description of new mining operation technologies available to day from the Caterpillar technology alliance.

The Reefton Goldfield, both historically and potentially, represents a significant gold producing camp in the Westland province of New Zealand. Some two million ounces of gold have been produced from the Greenland Group host rocks between 1870 and 1951 with the most significant producers being the Blackwater and Globe Progress mines.   Steep terrain, high rainfall, poor outcrop, widespread fluvio-glacial deposits, tertiary cover and sometimes onerous environmental access conditions have proved a challenge to conventional exploration techniques. In addition classic exploration techniques have come up against a desire to reduce exploration cycle time and exploration costs while increasing both quality and quantity of geological information.   The trial, and subsequent implementation, of Wacker sampling has proved a highly successful and effective geochemical tool currently being utilised to target, discover, and define potential economic gold mineralisation in the Reefton Goldfield.

The pores within iron ore sinter are important for producing a high quality material that is strong and easily reduced. The complementary methods of mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) and X-ray computed tomography (CT) were used to characterise the structure of industrial and pilot scales sinters across a wide range of pore sizes (3 nm to 100 µm for MIP and 50 µm to 5 mm for CT). The inhomogeneous nature of sinter and the variation in the measurements make it difficult to compare samples. The generalised additive modelling (GAM) approach, using the open source statistical software package, R, has been applied to highlight where there are peaks in the concentration of pore sizes. Importantly, the shape of the GAM-fitted function and the heights of the peaks show statistically significant differences between samples. For the samples investigated, the GAM-fitted functions for the MIP volume distribution of pore diameters were found to have a common set of distinctive peaks at 0.005, 0.6 and 20 µm. The GAM approach was also applied to the X-ray CT measured pore wall thickness, highlighting a single peak whose position varies between samples. The cause of these distinctive peaks and their implications for sinter quality are discussed. Correlation was found between the volume in peak 1 (0.005 µm) and the concentration of primary hematite. No correlation was found between the pore wall thickness and the strength of the sinter, suggesting the composition of the pore walls may be more important. Future work will focus on small-scale sinters produced under tightly controlled conditions to study sinters with a wider range of quality values.CITATION:Harvey, T, O’Dea, D, Evans, G, Godel, B and Honeyands, T, 2017. To George Orwell the year of 1984 was the inspiration for a book. To most New Zealanders it was the year that the fourth Labour Government was elected to power. It was also the year that the review of mining legislation commenced. While Orwell's book and the election of Labour are clearly events of some historic note, one could be excused for classifying the review of minerals legislation somewhat differently in terms of its present achievements! Since the review began it has led a tortuous path through a rapidly evolving policy environment to a point three years hence where no major policies have been determined.

Hydraulic fracturing to precondition the orebody to enhance rock mass cavability is gaining acceptance in underground cave mining applications. Assisting cavability is becoming important as an increasing number of cave mines are being implemented in hard, deep and competent rock masses where clamping stresses are higher and cave column heights may be in excess of 1000 m. Propagating large caves to surface in such conditions can be challenging as risks such as slowed propagation and air gaps can develop during the process.Underground-based hydraulic fracturing is routinely used at Cadia East as a means of preconditioning the orebody to assist in cave propagation, fragmentation and seismicity reduction. This paper presents a summary of a surface-based hydraulic fracture program that was successfully implemented to assist in the propagation of the Cadia East Panel Cave 1 (CE-PC1) cave to surface through competent overlying rock masses. In this case study, the propagation of the CE-PC1 cave slowed as the cave grew past 750 m in height, initiating a Trigger Action Response Plan regarding the cave propagation rate. Surface-based hydraulic fracturing was subsequently used to stimulate the cave to propagate through the final 450 m to surface. Importance of Strain to Fragment Strength in Blasting Induced Pre-Conditioning When a rock is blasted, cracks propagate through the rock causing the rock to fracture. This paper focuses on applying the results from a series of small scale blasting tests were designed to show the effect that varying blast variables such as explosive type and explosive energy have on the resulting strength of the post blast fragments. It was shown that the velocity of detonation of the explosive product affects the reduction of fragment strength. This has important implications for the downstream comminution process. The observations from these tests are then explained with reference to the principles of fracture mechanics. A simple but effective prediction of blast induced preconditioning is shown.

SAG Mill Grinding Design Versus Geometallurgy - Getting it Right for Competent Ores Smarter processing for the future, in the area of SAG mill design involves accurate grinding test data, completing final mill design in less than three months, and at a cost of less than US$80 000. More detailed variability testing on the other hand takes longer, is more expensive, and is used for throughput optimisation for an existing or newly purchased mill. This paper shows that SAGDesignTM testing is excellent for new SAG plant design due to relatively low cost per test and the ability to do more testing for a limited budget on larger projects. It also briefly examines a way to develop proper geometallurgical ore hardness information on every block in the mine model, from the more detailed analysis data.

A new framework that collates and interprets pre-existing data to assess vulnerability and ultimately plan to avoid or minimise flood-related risk to infrastructure, people, downtime, environment and revenue has been developed. The æClimate Related Adaptation from Terrain Evaluation ResultsÆ (CRATER) method tested at a coal mine in Queensland, provides semi-quantitative information to assist decision makers when designating investment for minimising vulnerability of mining operations to climate. Here we present the processes involved in this three-step approach that uses pre-existing spatial data of the mine site and local knowledge to build a set of visual tools to assist decision-making. The first step of the process is performing multi-criteria evaluation (MCE) within a geographic information system (GIS) on ranked natural conditions at the mine, such as elevation, slope, drainage, soil and vegetation, which is performed to identify critical flood areas. Secondly, a fault-tree analysis identifies how impact can occur and what options there are for impact reduction. Finally, a resource assessment of the mineÆs capacity to adapt reduces the adaptation options to those most suited to the mine. The results are confidential, but for the purpose of introducing the methodology, we present simplified results, particularly of steps 2 and 3. CRATER can also be used for future æwhat-ifÆ flooding scenarios to identify the most suitable locations for roads, buildings or other critical infrastructure. The methodology is transferable to any mine, series of mines or locations along the mining value chain that have sufficient data, providing a practical decision-making tool to identify æno-regretsÆ actions that not only could reduce downtime after or during an event, but in some cases may enhance production between extreme events. Laboratory-scale studies aimed at developing a process for solubilising manganese values from a low grade pyrolusite containing material using low grade pyrite, both available in India, are described. Leaching 21 parts by mole of pyrolusite with 6 and 26 parts by mole of pyrite and sulphuric acid respectively results in good manganese dissolution (98 per cent) at 100°C within one hour. The probable kinetics of the leaching process has also been given.

Fine Gravity Separation in the Reflux Classifier, Exploiting a High Shear Rate, Laminar Flow Mechanism The Reflux Classifier is used in the gravity separation of particles over a broad range of particle sizes. The device consists of a fluidised bed zone, with a system of parallel inclined channels above. The inclined channels provide a significant hydraulic advantage over conventional fluidised beds via the so-called Boycott Effect (Boycott, 1920). This paper describes a new advance in fine gravity separation based on the high shear rate and laminar flow profile that arises when closely spaced inclined channels are deployed. As reported recently (Galvin et al, 2009a), a powerful density based separation mechanism develops from this arrangement, suppressing the effects of particle size. In this paper we focus on two areas, firstly the application of the separator in the laboratory for batch fractionation of particles of varying size and density to determine the grade recovery curve and hence the liberation, and secondly the step change in separation performance achieved on a continuous steady state basis when closely spaced inclined channels are used. The variation in the separation density with particle size decreases significantly, and the Ecarte Probable Error (Ep) remains at low levels over a broad size range.

The process of hydraulic transport through pipelines, worldwide well known for the transport of fine-grain solids is also being used to a greater extent in mining for the handling of primarily coarse-grain solid û water mixtures for the removal of, for instance û coal and waste mixtures after coal winning using hydraulic monitors, tailings for backfilling underground and washer tailings and flotation waste to the dump. A large-scale test unit was taken into service at the Bergbauforschung GmbH (Mining Research Company) in Essen-Kray, GFR, to further improve this technology. The unit was planned and built by Krupp Industrie- und Stahlbau of Duisburg in cooperation with Bergbauforschung GmbH. The paper deals in detail with the demands made on this test unit and the technical results obtained on it and with the planned experimental research work.

Bench stoping operations at the Isa Lead mine have been underway for over 11 years. They were implemented to address safety, productivity and mining cost concerns noted with cut and fill mining operations which were then being used to extract ore from the Racecourse orebodies. This paper describes the main features of benching operations at the Isa Lead mine and identifies the key elements for the success of the method. Four case histories are presented which highlight several of these factors.
