Efficient blasting requires constant vigilance with respect to the actual layout being used in the field. Objective measurement techniques are required in laying out a pattern as the 'by eye' or 'thumb suck' methods cannot guarantee consistent results in layout. Erratic blast results are the consequence of such an approach. In a case study at Sons of Gwalia mine, it was demonstrated that incorrect front burdens had a snowballing effect on otherwise carefully laid out blasts, resulting in both excessive amounts of boulders caused by preconditioning of bench fronts and tops, and tight digging. Both problems caused lower excavator productivity and excessive excavator damage, as well as making it difficult to set out subsequent blasts correctly. Several field measurement methods are available to aid in determining correct blast layouts and one is described in this paper.

On-line radioisotope gauges determine information on the characteristics of ore to enable improved control of processing operations. In the metalliferous mineral industry, in-stream analysis systems based on radioisotope X-ray techniques determine concentrations of valuable minerals at various stages of the concentration process. In the coal industry, on-line gauges determine ash and moisture contents, and the specific energy of coal.In-stream analysis systems developed in Australia are installed in about 30 mineral concentrators. Their use has led to the increased recovery of valuable minerals, and the time taken to recover the cost of installation is usually several months. The savings to Australia resulting from use of these analysis systems is estimated to be more than $A 15 million per year.Australian experience in the training of mineral industry personnel shows that the most effective approach is to combine courses on nuclear techniques and control of processing operations. This is the basis of Australia's contribution to the minerals sub-project of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Industrial Project.

Mining of the zinc, lead and silver deposit at the Broken Hill Southern Operations site has been occurring for over 100 years. As a result of this, a significant amount of high-grade ore is now taken from narrow remnant pillars left between old stopes and zones of previously mined ground. Stopes have been filled with either hydraulic fill (also known as ‘sandfill’), cemented hydraulic fill (cemented sandfill), waste rock backfill or a mixture of these fill types.In the last ten years, there has been considerable success mining through narrow pillars where sandfill is exposed in the development face and/or walls using a ‘shell’ support regime, wherein a layer of bolted mesh is sandwiched between two layers of sprayed fibrecrete (25 mm fibrecrete, then mesh and bolt, followed by a final 50 mm layer of fibrecrete). Shell support is also used in very poor, broken, relaxed ground conditions and in areas filled with cemented fill (sandfill with a minimum four per cent cement content).The next stage of innovation has been to develop a technique for mining through old stope voids filled with uncemented sandfill, known locally as ‘contours’ (old cut-and-fill working), an activity where unconsolidated sandfill can run at the face and from the backs. The challenge is to prevent exposed sandfill in the face and the backs from failing before it can be supported.To achieve this, the Southern Operations mine has implemented a technique in which 6 m long spiling bars are used to strengthen and stabilise the sandfill in front of the face. The hollow steel bars are driven in around the heading perimeter in a closely spaced pattern then pumped full of grout. The bars and the grout stabilise the sandfill in front of the face, preventing it from failing into the drive during excavation and prior to further support being installed.A final support system consisting of shotcrete, mesh, bolts and steel girders is installed as excavation progresses. Both the initial and final support systems are essentially passive support systems designed for a low-stress environment (as the stress originates mostly from the mass of unconsolidated sandfill).This process is slow and labour intensive. Fifteen separate cycles of people/machinery are needed to progress one equivalent heading cut (compared to six for a standard fibrecrete- and bolt pattern-supported rock face heading). This slow pace introduces scheduling challenges, but the process opens up parts of the orebody that were previously uneconomical to mine.CITATION:Carroll, D, 2014. Following the accident in the Peterson section of Mufulira mine in September, 1970, a method had to be found of extracting up to 300 000 tonnes of ore per month from this area without inducing caving. Sandfill mining methods were chosen, necessitating a plant capable of producing both cemented and uncemented fill on a large scale. The paper covers the design and construction of this sandplant which is thought to be unique for its size, as it incorporates three 3 000 tonne capacity settled storage silos, a 500 tonne capacity cement silo, mixing tanks and a control room situated underground. The plant is designed to handle an aver- age of 440 tonnes per hour with a maximum of 660 tonnes per hour for limited periods, delivering either uncemented fill or cemented fill in proportions varying from 1:6 to 1:30. The instrumentation and equipment necessary to give one man operation of the plant is described and the fill mining methods now in use at Mufulira are briefly outlined.

A geophysical technique of rock mass assessment for engineering purposes is being investigated and shows positive correlation with direct structural logging and mapping techniques for the detection of major geological features. The technique is cross-hole acoustic surveying incorporating high speed signal averaging, with a maximum hole separation in excess of 30 metres in hard unfractured rock masses. The bulk of the field test work was carried out in open stopes in the copper ore bodies of Mount Isa Mines Limited. The investigation forms part of an integrated study of blasting in mining, aiming for fragmentation control through blast design modification. The rock quality factor, Q, is presented as a blasting index and can be determined for a significant portion of a production stope.

The procurement process for underground construction contracts, in particular those contacts involving tunnel boring machines (TBMs), is subject to many complex and inter-related variables, including national and local politics, public policy, community involvement and media attention û as well as strict environmental and legal requirements. Other restrictions include the time available to adequately investigate geotechnical conditions and viable technical options to determine the best construction methodologies û including selection of tunnel boring machine characteristics and, those construction means and methods suitable for the specific geotechnical and environmental conditions. The latter are, most often, quite imperfectly understood. æGetting it rightÆ implies that an optimal configuration û of machine type, characteristics and associated methodologies û can be found and successfully implemented for a particular project. æFrom the beginningÆ implies that the lack of time issue can be successfully resolved. Within an international context this paper highlights a number of issues of concern which relate to tunnel procurement systems and the ways in which certain key processes are managed during planning, design and construction. The authors argue that there is considerable room for improvement in the way tunnelling projects are undertaken and an approach is discussed which has the potential for substantial gains in cost and schedule and reduction of risk. Savings, however, may only be fully realised if the new methods can be fully implemented by all parties involved. This, we believe, will require the rejection of ætraditionalÆ forms of management and procurement with associated changes in the roles and responsibilities of owner, engineer and contractor. Additionally, risk identification, assessment and mitigation are essential cost and schedule control process which have, to this point, been underutilised by the underground construction industry.

Newmont Australia Limited has for some 15 years mined a number of large open cuts associated with the Telfer Gold Dome deposits. The principal ore body exploited has been the East Flank of the Main Dome where a very high grade gold reef deposit of mixed metal sulphides, grades in excess of 20gA Au, has been mined in conjunction with dissemi- nated mineralisation contained in the overburden material. The main ore body has been under review for some years as an under- ground mine, however due to the ore body widths of less than 1 metre and a dip generally less than 35 degrees and a very weak host rocks earlier studies all resulted in a continuation of open pit mining activities. In early 1988 it was recognised that open cast mining would not be able to mine all of this valuable resource and a feasibility study was commenced to come up with a practical and economic approach to underground mining.

A new algorithm has been investigated for three-dimensional open pit designs to improve the dynamic cone approach which utilises the dynamic programming technique. The conventional dynamic cone method was improved by introducing examination processes: 1. whether any negative blocks are included in a unit cone or not; and 2. whether it is possible or not to leave the negative blocks unmined in the unit cone without disturbing the geometric condition imposed on the slope angle of the cone. The newly developed algorithm was applied to a large-scale open pit copper mine in a planning stage and the results have been compared with those obtained by the conventional methods.

Gulf Coast domal salt mining operations have had sporadic encounters with methane gas emitted without any warning. In virtually all confirmed cases, the methane was localized in methane enriched zones. In a few cases large quantities of methane were expelled rapidly with salt outbursts, resulting in dangerous methane concentrations. Estimates of methane liberated by face blasts in methane-enriched areas is needed in determining how much air should be supplied to the face for proper dilution. A relationship between the gas content of salt samples collected from the face and the amount of methane liberated would be helpful in estimating how much methane will be produced by a face blast. Little is known about the layering or stratification of methane in large area-low velocity airways. This publication reports on three tests conducted by the Bureau of Mines which monitored the immediate return air of four faces during blasting. The test locations were in a methane gas-enriched section that had previously experienced two large outbursts and many smaller ones. A comparison was made between gas content values of face salt samples from the dissolution test and the gas liberation quantities. The characteristic movements of the methane in a large room with low air velocities were charted. This will help to better understand the factors involved in proper placement of methane sensors as a warning system.

Traditional vat leaching has been done on a batch basis, which involves loading the vats, leaching, drainage, washing, draining again, and unloading. As a result of these many steps and the attendent cost of labor, vat leaching is generally not an economic proposition. Also, like heap leaching, there is a tendency for channeling to occur within the bed, whether the leach solution flow is by percolation upwards or downwards. No doubt experimenters over the decades have been enticed by the idea of fluidization induced by upward flow through the ore bed. If the bed could be fluidized, then a continuous flow of material could be set up, dispensing with the high cost of loading and unloading the vat. A quick calculation of solution flow requirements, however, soon reveals that the volume of constant liquid movement necessary to sustain fluidization is prohibitive from a power and cost standpoint. The premise of the Mackie Vat Leaching Jig (MVLT) concept was that the large volume of liquid flow required for fluidization could be achieved instantaneously, and that during this small element of time, the solids would flow under the influence of the hydraulic gradient in the vat. If this procedure could be repeated in a cyclic manner, then a steady-state condition could be set up. Experiments in the laboratory demonstrated that solids flow could be achieved in this manner.

RIG Technologies has developed new technology that can successfully acquire high quality natural gamma ray (GR) and hole deviations, downhole while drilling, on reverse circulation drills. This technology survives the hostile downhole environment with shocks of between 400–2500 g for 7– 10 days at a time. The Logging While Drilling (LWD) service eliminates the need to run in-rod surveys, either by the driller or by wireline trucks and crews. This time saving is in the middle of the drilling process, thus enabling drills to keep drilling and increase their productivity. Additional to the natural GR and directional survey, the downhole tool is equipped with sensors to measure the downhole dynamic response of the drilling system providing insights into rock hardness, density and potentially clay types. These parameters have never been acquired behind the hammer before and coupled with surface measurements from the drills themselves, form a rich data set for trainable machine learning algorithms shortening the time to receive advanced geophysical answer products from sometimes months, to live feeds directly from drills (Hopper, 2019). Alive, high speed, two-way data link between surface data acquisition systems and downhole geophysics tools has been established and incorporates calibrated surface measurements of dynamic forces directly on the drill string to match up with those measured downhole. Receiving live streams of natural GR and hole deviation surveys as the drill is drilling allows true remote decisionmaking with live data available anywhere in the world. The combined data from surface and downhole dynamics builds a data set that could begin to enable true optimisation of autonomous drilling processes.

Final landform planning in Deswik software was used to determine if integration into the mine plans could achieve better closure outcomes. Conventional processing of heavy mineral deposits containing radioactive rare earth minerals such as monazite and xenotime may cause industrial hygiene problems through atmospheric dust and contamination of product concentrates. An alternative procedure has been developed in which such minerals are removed from bulk heavy mineral concentrates by flotation with little loss of other economic minerals. With fine ores, recoveries of over 95% have been achieved and with coarse ores over 80%,in both cases at high grade. Several flotation regimes have proven effective. The potential for generation of radioactive dust or product contamination is subsequent processing -is correspondingly reduced.

The South Junction deposit of St Barbara Mines Limited was discovered in 1989 by the geologists of Ross Atkins Mining.The deposit occurs in the lower part of the Gabanintha Formation of the Lukes Creek Group in the Mt Magnet -Meekatharra greenstone belt. Country rock is predominantly talc-chlorite schist. Gold mineralisation is associated with north-south shear zones, quartz-carbonate-fuchsite alteration of the ultramafic rocks and in particular close to deeply weathered quartz-albite porphyry. Occupational health and safety is essential in modern mining workplaces and in China it is often not given enough emphasis due to a lack of knowledge and/or appreciation. Although many health and safety regulations have been passed over the years, serious and relevant laws and regulations on mine health and safety are of recent history (since 2002), the level of stringent enforcement is still inconsistent and accurate field data are scant and not readily available. As of year-end 2006 there were 676 562 recorded cases of occupational diseases in China, of which 616 442 or 91 per cent were miners’ pneumoconiosis. Of these, 146 195 (23 per cent) have died, and an average of 10 000 new cases were added every year between 1991 and 2006. Another report shows that 93.18 per cent of miners have never had a contract with their companies, which means their cases were not even part of China’s official statistics. This study attempts to examine the prevalence of occupational diseases in the Chinese mining industry during 2000–2013, compiled from government annual reports and academic studies. The population and the per capila consumption of mineral resources have both grown dramatically during the century past. It is argued that growth will continue through the century ahead but that the magnitudes of undiscovered resources are probably adequate to meet demands. The challenge that the mineral explorer of the future will face is finding deposits beneath several kilometres of barren rock.It is further argued that the principal challenge that society will face in the century ahead is the amelioration of environmental stress.

Historically, most of the gold produced from Kalgoorlie has been derived from the gold and gold telluride Golden Mile lode systems dominantly hosted within the Golden Mile Doler-ite and to a lesser extent, Paringa Basalt. In more recent times the gold-quartz stockwork ore bodies within Unit 8 of the Golden Mile Dolerite at Mt Charlotte have become increasingly imp-ortant.Extensive low grade gold mineralisation has now been defined to the north and east of Kalgoorlie within rock units of the Golden Mile sequence not generally considered to be highly prospective.Two main types of mineralisation have been defined. The first comprises variably mineralised and altered quartz-albite porphyr-ies emplaced within talc-carbonated Hannans Lake Serpentinite (Mystery deposit). There is intense fuchsitic, pyritic and carbonate alter-ation of the serpentinite adjacent to the porphyry bodies. Gold mineralisation is assoc-iated with fine-grained disseminations and veinlets of pyrite and narrow quartz and quartz-tourmaline veining within the porphyry and adjacent fuchsite-carbonate rock. The current suite of bulk mining explosives has been available to the industry for over 20 years. The flexibility and performance of ammonium nitrate based emulsion blend explosives were accepted by the mining industry in the early 1980s. These water resistant explosives rapidly displaced the water gels and slurries developed during the previous two decades. However, since the 1980s there has been no equivalent step change to the basic formulation or application of bulk explosives, although there has been a continuous process of refinement with respect to stability, handling characteristics and most significantly, cost. In the 1980s explosives supply contracts were awarded based on technical evaluations, usually accompanied by field trials. Technical personnel from both mining companies and explosives suppliers dominated the negotiations and there was a strong focus on explosive energy and blasting requirements. Today, explosives from alternative suppliers are difficult to differentiate on the basis of energy so the focus has shifted to aspects of service and price û bulk mining explosives are now largely treated as a commodity and the negotiations are dominated by commercial personnel. Commercial pressures from large mining companies have seen a substantial reduction in the real price of explosives. However, this has come at a cost. In order to reduce manufacturing costs, emulsion formulations have changed. In general they are not only cheaper, but also less energetic. Powder factors have had to increase to achieve the same blasting results, especially in hard ground. It is debatable whether the mining companies have achieved all of the economies they were seeking. This paper discusses these issues and argues that the mining industry would benefit from taking a more technically driven approach to meeting their blasting requirements. Recent trends towards more open contracts between the mining companies and their suppliers can be extended to explosives. To achieve this, mining companies will need to acquire sufficient technical knowledge to take a more pro-active approach to specify the characteristics of the explosives required to maximise the economic performance of their operations.

Two innovative ground reinforcement products have been developed for use in the mining industry. One of these products is a high strength polyethylene (HOPE) bar for use as a rib bolt in underground coal mining and as a corrosion proof tendon in open pit mines. The other product is a cable bolt (Ultrastrand) which demonstrates enhanced load transfer and is available in continuous lengths. Ultrastrand's exceptional in- situ performance and versatility makes it ideal for mechanised installation in both underground and surface mining operations. Details of these products are presented and results from labortaory and field trials are discussed.
