In steelmaking processes, it is known that P2O5 in dephosphorisation slags often exists in solid solutions between Ca2SiO4 and Ca3P2O8, <C2S-C3P>SS, and thus the solid solutions play an important role in the dephosphorisation reaction. Hence, the knowledge of thermochemical properties, ie phase relations and activities of components, in slags containing <C2S-C3P>SS are necessary for the effective removal of phosphorus from hot metal. In this study, the P2O5 activities in <C2S-C3P>SS were measured through the gas equilibrium method. In the present experiment, oxide samples were equilibrated with Cu-P liquid alloys at 1573 K under a stream of Ar + H2 + H2O or Ar + H2 + CO2 gas mixture in which oxygen potential was fixed and then equilibrium phosphorus concentrations in the Cu-P alloys, [mass%P]Cu, were analysed with ICP-OES.

Water is a limited and precious resource in Australia. Because of the increasing demand for water from all sectors of the economy and the variability in supply, efficient management of water resources is of vital importance. The national water reform agenda has provided a strong impetus to all states and territories to progressively move towards more efficient and sustainable water management. The Queensland Water Act 2000 is the legislative framework for providing water for the environment and for planning for the security of supply to water users. The comprehensive water planning process prescribed in the Act results in new tradeable water allocations that are separate from land. These water allocations are well specified and can be traded on a permanent or temporary basis. Trading of water allows it to move to its highest value use, thereby encouraging the most efficient distribution of this limited resource. In addition to transferring ownership of water allocations, it is also possible to change the attributes of the allocation, such as the location from which water may be taken. Changes to water allocations are subject to approval from the resource manager. Pre-testing allows for certain changes to be approved very quickly, making the trading process more streamlined and cost effective. Temporary trades, or seasonal water assignments, currently account for the majority of water trades in Queensland. However, permanent trading activity is expanding steadily as old water entitlements are converted to tradeable water allocations and as the market matures. The permanent trading market provides significant opportunities to the mining sector. It allows mining companies to buy water allocations at market prices without compromising environmental outcomes or causing third party impacts.

In 2010 a store and release cover (the cover) was constructed on the south waste rock dump (SWRD) at Century mine. This also included aerial seeding of province native trees and shrub seeds. The purpose of the cover is to reduce percolation into the potentially acid-forming (PAF) waste rock by maintaining a compacted reduced permeability layer (RPL) at near-saturated conditions. This is achieved by overlaying the RPL with a 1.5 to 2 m thickness of soil-mulch. The soil-mulch has a hummocky final surface that captures rainfall, so it does not runoff, allowing it in part to infiltrate, with excess water removed by evaporation and transpiration. The RPL is the trafficked surface of the SWRD.The unsaturated behaviour of the cover is being monitored by instrumentation including volumetric water content and matric suction sensors and a weather station capable of estimating evapotranspiration. The instrumentation allows for direct measurement of infiltration into the cover, storage of rainfall, percolation through the base of the cover and in situ soil water characteristic curves (SWCC).The key functions used to describe the unsaturated behaviour of the cover materials is the SWCC and the unsaturated hydraulic conductivity function. The SWCC is a plot of soil water versus soil suction. It provides the loci of moisture states of a soil from the saturated to the dry state.The paper presents the results of five years of monitoring. It shows that total infiltration into the top of the SWRD was about 1.6 – 3.7% of cumulative rainfall over five years, with most of the infiltration going into storage within the cover. Runoff from the top of the dump is not allowed therefore, the remaining 95% of the total rainfall was lost to evaporation or as lateral flow when infiltration reached the RPL. The paper presents some simple analyses of the wetting by rainfall infiltration of the cover, leading to breakthrough at the base. Technological advances associated with the expanded application of paste technology in underground mine backfilling are now stimulating an interest in the disposal of process tailings as paste in the surface environment. Concurrent with the development of alternative surface tailings disposal practices is the requirement to fully understand the consolidation behaviour of tailings in paste form, and to relate this understanding to the significant body of data and operating experience from decades of study of the performance of hydraulically placed tailings. One effective method for demonstrating the benefits derived from handling and placement of tailings as paste is to review tailings slurry consolidation theory from the perspective of the changes which take place in the material as it makes its transition from a loose slurry to a dense, stable deposit resulting from managed thin-layer deposition. For a typical process tailings, an example is provided which illustrates the effect which mechanical dewatering has in accelerating the consolidation process and thereby providing a range of benefits from the perspective of surface disposal. Increased rates of filling (rise), expanded use of upstream embankment construction methods and elimination of impounded surface solutions are some quantifiable benefits which can be assembled on a site-specific basis to allow for valid comparisons with more traditional approaches to tailings disposal.

Tunnel excavation may induce adverse effects on nearby existing structures/foundations in urban areas. Accurate prediction of tunnelling effects on pile foundations of nearby structures in the urban environment poses a major challenge during design. Several studies have been undertaken to understand the mechanisms of the soil-tunnel-pile interaction, which focused only on influence of tunnelling on nearby existing building and foundations. However, effect of pile loading on existing tunnels did not receive enough research attention so far. So it is essential to measure the response of existing tunnel-lining due to loading on newly constructed pile to assess to the safety against the additional forces/moment caused by pile loading and to evaluate the critical distance for the proposed construction of any structures from the tunnel location. This paper presents result of three-dimensional (3D) finite element analysis carried out in ABAQUS to investigate the effects of pile loading on existing tunnels embedded in cohesive soil. It is found that the effects on tunnel lining depend on horizontal separation distance between pile and tunnel as well as location/elevation of pile tip with respect to tunnel location.

The basic aim of mine planning is to design mine layouts and schedules that achieve optimisation of operations, minimum cost and maximum resource recovery. Successful accomplishment of this aim is facilitated by timely and comprehensive rehabilitation planning commencing at the pre-feasibility stage and continuing until the end of mining. Incorporation of a final landfomt design for waste rock dumps in a mine plan requires a prediction of surface stability, which may be achieved through erosion modelling. Erosion prediction models can be placed in two broad categories: soil loss prediction models eg USLE and CREAMS, and geomorphic models such as SIBERIA. A waste rock dump landform design based on selected slope form and grade and drainage systems should be developed as part of planning. A digital terrain model (DTM) of the landfonn should then be produced which can be modelled for long-term erosional stability using pre-determined parameter values. If acceptable standards of stability are not achieved, the landform should be redesigned and remodelled until the desired result is obtained. The planning process incorporating models requires knowledge of spoil or waste rock properties and model parameter values. This information is site specific and can be obtained from drill cores or costeans at the pre-mining stage and from spoil or waste rock during the mining stage. Realistic model parameter values are critical in post-mining landfonn design and can be obtained by several methods, including rainfall simulation, monitoring, geochemical analyses and grain size analysis.

Until a year ago all isotope on-stream analysis utilised flow cells similar to those designed for conventional X-ray on-stream analysis. These systems incorporated a fairly complex sampling system necessary to present a representa- tive air-free sample of the main process to the flow cell. Maintenance costs and capital costs associated with flow cells and sampling systems have been generally high. Costs can be greatly reduced and reliability greatly increased, by using isotopes incorporated in immersible on-stream analysis probes which actually dip into the main process stream eliminating the need for sampling. A bonus of other advantages associated with immersible probes includes temperature stability and ease of calibration. This paper discusses details and results of the probe systems, justifica- tion for installing on-stream analysis, comparison of conventional X-ray and isotope techniques, and a brief survey of methods of analysis using radio- isotopes in on-stream elemental determinations.

The Eleonore property (James Bay district of Northern QuTbec), owned by Goldcorp, hosts gold within stockworks of quartz-tourmaline-arsenopyrite veins and veinlets contained within microcline (potassic alteration) and brown tourmaline replacement zones. The preliminary investigation to recover gold from drill core samples showed that flotation followed by ultra-fine grinding and cyanidation is the preferred option. Ultra-fine grinding is used to liberate gold finely disseminated in sulfides. The flotation concentrate used in the investigation had a P80 of 11 ¦ and contained 75.5 g/t Au, 5.0 g/t Ag, 10.3 per cent S, 0.07 per cent Cu and traces of antimony (0.03 per cent). The mineralogical characterisation showed the presence of 65 per cent gangue minerals, 23 per cent pyrrhotite (hexagonal), 9.6 per cent arsenopyrite, 2.2 per cent pyrite and 0.08 per cent chalcopyrite with trace amounts of galena (0.05 per cent) and sphalerite (0.03 per cent). Gold was in the form of native gold and electrum. A straight cyanidation conducted at pH 11.0, DO of 3 - 5 ppm, 2000 ppm NaCN, 20¦C and for 72 hours extracted 97.0 per cent Au and consumed 31.5 kg/t NaCN. The equilibrium was reached within 24 hours. Increasing the dissolved oxygen to 16 ppm reduced the consumption of cyanide to 22.0 kg/t with 96.7 per cent Au extraction. A 16-hour pretreatment with 2.0 kg/t lead nitrate, followed by a 24-hour cyanidation reduced the cyanide consumption to 6.0 kg/t with a gold extraction of 97.5 per cent. Increasing the lead nitrate addition to 6.0 kg/t reduced the cyanide consumption to 1.2 kg/t by passivating the surface of pyrrhotite. The gold extraction remained at 97.0 per cent. It was possible to decrease the concentration of cyanide to 800 ppm NaCN without compromising gold extraction. The associated cyanide consumption was 1.2 kg/t NaCN. The passivation of gold grains was an issue when the cyanide concentration was decreased to 550 ppm NaCN. The gold extraction decreased to 92.2 per cent. The average lime addition for all the tests was 7.4 kg/t and the average silver extraction was 80 per cent. Efficient cyanidation of an ultra-fine sulfide concentrate with only 800 ppm NaCN represents an advance in leaching of ultra-fine sulfide concentrates. The high addition of lead nitrate would certainly make cyanide destruction easier; consequently reducing the effluent treatment costs and making possible to meet the discharge regulations criteria.CITATION:DeschOnes, G and Fulton, M, 2013. Batch flotation tests were conducted on a haematite-bearing Sishen iron ore slimes sample from South Africa using reverse cationic flotation. The effect of grinding on flotation performance, the flotation response of various key impurities in the sample, and the feasibility of increasing metal recovery by refloating tailings in a scavenger flotation step were investigated. The test results indicate that reverse cationic flotation is effective in rejecting impurities from the iron ore sample tested. From a head grade assaying 6.4 per cent SiO2, 2.14 per cent Al2O3, 0.402 per cent K2O, 0.082 per cent P and 0.194 per cent TiO2, the levels of impurities were reduced to 1.83 per cent SiO2, 0.88 per cent Al2O3, 0.095 per cent K2O, 0.066 per cent P and 0.174 per cent TiO2 in the final concentrate at a Fe recovery of 74 per cent. The flotation response of SiO2, Al2O3 and K2O were found to be better than that of P and TiO2. The testwork demonstrated that grinding to 80 per cent passing about 49 microns is essential for upgrading the Sishen iron ore to produce &gt;67 per cent Fe concentrate grade. This grind size corresponds to about 80 per cent liberation of haematite from the gangue minerals. Fe recoveries up to 76 per cent were obtained by refloating the rougher tailings in a scavenger stage, with little effect on the final concentrate grade. Size-by-size Fe recovery data obtained indicated that particles below ten microns were mostly lost in the desliming stage conducted prior to flotation whilst some reported to the froth by entrainment. Some of the coarser haematite-gangue composite particles reported to the froth product by genuine flotation.

This paper highlights the importance of accurate observational technical reports compiled by Mining Geologists and Engineers. Before uncovering the original reports in July 1992, all previous investigations discounted returning to old mining areas on the belief that all operations were suspended because they were &apos;unpayable&apos;. However, the detail of the original reports removed any doubt of the economic value of retrieving remnant ore.The important feature was that the description of &apos;unpayable&apos; by GMA could be equated to 11.6 - 35 g/t over the history of the mine. On the basis of these reports the Morning Star mine has been re-opened.

This paper talks about the experiences of groups we have worked with over the last few years in the Asia-Pacific region (Australia, Canada, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea) and the ways that they have worked to bridge the divide between traditional and introduced structures, governance at a regional level and the introduction of traditional values into monitoring and evaluation practices. In doing this these groups have created structures and processes which have helped them engage both more effectively with external stakeholders while maintaining the legitimacy of their own operations with their own constituents. These are important ideas for those involved in the mining industry that could provide a number of very tangible benefits to mining firms and their engagement with these kinds of groups.

With the declining of high-quality hematite and magnetite iron ore reserves and the increasing accumulation of material resulting from mining and beneficiation operations that appear as lowquality depots and discharged materials in tailing dams, the necessity of recycling these reserves is increasingly becoming a critical demand. The Chadormalu iron ore mine is among the largest deposits of magnetite-hematite iron ore in Iran. In this mine, the total wet processing tails accumulated in tailing dams are over 92 Mt containing 25–40 per cent Fe. Laboratory and pilot tests on tailing samples led to the design and implementation of the Chadormalu Tailing Recovery plant (CTR) with a unique process circuit in Iran. In the CTR plant, after three steps of re-pulping with spiral classifiers and sanding machines, the underflow is concentrated by two stages of WMIMS and produces 64 per cent Fe grade magnetite concentrate. The tailings of the drums are mixed together and introduced into the hematite recovery section, including two stages of VPHGMS separators, and 60 per cent Fe grade hematite concentrate is produced. This plant has been in operation for over ten years with a total yield of 18.93 per cent. Due to changes in the materials extracted through new tailing dams, the quality of the final concentrate dramatically dropped to 56.36 per cent Fe and 0.79 per cent P; therefore, applying reverse flotation and removing phosphorus from the final concentrate was inevitable. By using this approach, upgrading of the concentrate to 63.01 per cent Fe and 0.05 per cent P was obtained. Furthermore, regarding the high amount of phosphorus in the tailing streams, direct flotation has been designed to produce apatite concentrate as a by-product stream through a flotation system comprising series banks of Rougher, Cleaner, and Re-Cleaners flotation cells. Hence based on the results, at optimum conditions, a final apatite concentrate with a yield of 15.78 per cent and 14.06 per cent P could be achieved. Successful implementation of this project has led to the production of magnetite-hematite and apatite concentrates with annual capacities of 250 000 and 45 000 t, together with total yields of 11.59 per cent and 6.19 per cent (includes de-sliming of apatite flotation feed), respectively.

The issue of flyrock is very important in the operation of all mineral extraction sites that use blasting. Unlike the other environmental effects of blasting, ground vibrations and air overpressure, flyrock is (or should be) a rare event, with severe consequences which may include damage to property, injury or fatalities. These physical consequences are often matched by a loss in public confidence in the management of the operation, mistrust and bad press. In this work a deterministic analysis of flyrock was carried out using the equations of a particle in motion with drag. The solutions to these equations were used to reproduce the curves of Lundborg et al (1975) for the relationship between flyrock boulder size and maximum ejection distance. A probabilistic approach based on Monte Carlo simulation was built up with the analytical model using published data together with local case study material. A typical quarry blast situation was modelled and estimates of safe standoff distances were determined using risk assessment techniques.

In order to improve the cutting blasting effect of dimension stone mining, the water coupling directional cutting blasting technology was put forward. Based on the test apparatus and special charge configuration, the mechanism of directional cutting blasting was analysed. Directional device changes the initial equilibrium of the total energy of shock wave effect on blasthole wall. The initial directional crack first appears in the blasthole wall that makes contact with the directional device. Then, two cracks are connected along the direction of the blasthole centre line under the action of detonation pressure and water wedge. The plexiglass tests showed that water coupling directional cutting blasting technology produced cracks along with the predetermined direction completely. A comprehensive computer simulation has been developed for heap and dump leaching processes. It deals with complex chemical interactions, involving several minerals and reagents, which vary with time and location in the dump. The simulation is generally applic- able to ores of various metals extracted by different reagents. It requires only mineral- ogical data obtainable from drill cores and chemical data obtainable from the literature; there is no curve-fitting with adjustable parameters. Applications in designing testwork programmes, evaluating operating options, transferring experience to new situations and reducing uncertainty in long-term forecasts are described. Specific examples are included illustrating the potential of the simulation.

A field trial of the prompt neutron-gamma SIROLOG technique was undertaken by the CSIRO - Division of Geomechanics at Callide Coalfields during July 1989. The trial investigated whether the sonde could reliably be used for the determination of Ash and Iron Oxide (Fe2O3) in coal seams, which had a highly variable iron content. Ten boreholes were logged, being water filled of a nominal diameter of 120 mm. The logging probe employed a 1.6 ¦g 252Cf neutron source and a 51 x 51 mm BGO detector. The source to detector distance was 15 cm. The results from one exploration borehole at the Dunn Creek Mine are discussed in the paper. The rms deviations for ash and iron determination between the neutron-capture predictions of the geophysical logs and the laboratory - chemical assays were 1.9 per cent Ash and 0.88 per cent Fe respectively. Using existing empirical equations which relate iron oxide concentration in coal ash to Initial Deformation Temperature (reducing conditions) at Callide, it may be possible to indirectly determine ash fusion properties as least as accurately, on a more detailed ply-by-ply basis, and more cost competitively than current laboratory techniques allow.

The Olympic Dam copper-uranium-gold-silver deposit, located 520 km NNW of Adelaide, S.A. was discovered by Western Mining Corporation Ltd in 1975, and is now being developed as a joint venture between WMC (5107o) and the BP Group (4907o). The discovery of this deposit resulted from the application of a conceptual model for the formation of sediment-hosted copper deposits. This model postulated that the oxidation of basaltic rocks could release significant amounts of copper into solution and that, under favourable conditions, these solutions might pass upwards along faults, and the copper be precipitated in reduced- facies sediments higher in the sequence. The Stuart Shelf province was chosen for exploration because geological interpretation suggested the presence of suitable basal- tic source rocks at depth, and favourable host sedimentary rocks in the overlying sequence. The Olympic Dam site was selected for drill-testing because of the presence of coincident gravity and aeromagnetic anomalies suggesting the presence of basalts and/or mineralisation at depth. This site also had a favourable tectonic signature, indicating the presence of deep crustal structures which might have allowed fluid migration.

New developments are taking place in the recovery of gold from leached pulps that are based upon the adsorption of the metal cyanide species onto ion exchange resins. Despite the success of several resin-in-pulp pilot plant operations in the Western World and large-scale plants in the former Soviet Union, the process is yet to gain recognition as a viable alternative to the carbon-in-pulp process. An experimental research program has investigated the use of a variety of different types of resins for the recovery of gold, but to-date no resin studied has the desired properties of high selective loading capacity for gold cyanide and a simple inexpensive elution procedure. In addition very little is known concerning the physical strength of resins and their ability to resist shattering due to osmotic shock during cycles of adsorption and elution. The ability of ion exchange resins to enhance the leaching of refractory and re-adsorbing ores has not been investigated. This paper highlights the necessary factors that need to be addressed before commercialisation of ion exchange technology for gold extraction is feasible.
