Activated carbon particles obtained from a number of Australian CIP operations were examined with an optical and a scanning electron micro- scope and an electron microprobe. External surfaces, and polished sec- tions through individual particles, were examined with special reference to materials on the surface and to calcium and gold distributions. Photographs are presented of surface contamination of the particles by salts precipitated from the pulp such as calcium carbonate (calcite), calcium sulphate (gypsum), and a magnesium salt; ore minerals such as quartz, hematite, pyrite, arsenopyrite, pentlandite, and various alumino- silicates; and other substances such as grinding media and a fungus. Calcite was very abundant but the other materials were less common. Contamination in the interior of carbon particles was almost exclu- sively calcium carbonate, and extensive contamination extended to the centre of some particles. A possible mechanism for the formation of cal- cium carbonate inside the carbon particles is noted. Gold X-ray dot maps of sections through carbon particles indicated that gold was distributed throughout coconut shell carbons and that although gold was more concentrated near the outer surfaces of extruded peat carbon particles, it was also present to depths of at least 500 ¦m. For fully effective information to be obtained from exploratory drilling for coal, drilling programs should be planned systemati- cally in successive stages, on the basis of existing geological criteria and information collated during each stage. In this way, drilling can be executed with optimum economy, aided by auxiliary geophysical techniques wherever these may be appropriate. The object- ives of the programs must ultimately include an adequate assessment of mining conditions as well as thorough evaluation of coal quality. The first of these objectives is not always appreciated by both geologists and mining engineers engaged in supervising drilling pro- grams, often resulting in the need for more additional drilling and more expense than would otherwise be required. To achieve all of these objectives as effectively as possible, the drilling should be supervised by well qualified personnel experienced in working in a multi- dicipline, professional mining, geological and engineering team.

However. advances in three main areas, the roof support mechanical design, hydraulic engineering and electronics have ultimately led to the point where, 35 years after that first installation. automation has been achieved and is now commonplace.The history of roof support automation has involved the continual integration of high technology engineering. Thera ate further possibilities for the future which combine to give some idea of the likelihood of there ultimately being a completely manless face.

Recent mineral exploration successes in the Proterozoic rocks of the Mount Isa Inlier are unprecedented in the regionÆs history. This new era of discovery, particularly for æblindÆ deposits, owes its origin to perseverance and advances in geoscience and exploration techniques, notably geophysics. Prospective host rocks outcrop over more than 50 000 km2 of the Mount Isa Inlier and extend a further 100 000 km2 below cover. They contain major deposits of copper, lead, zinc, silver and phosphate (Georgina Basin) and significant deposits of gold, uranium and cobalt. The discovery in 1923 of silver, lead and zinc at Mount Isa established the regionÆs world-class mineral potential. Since 1990, major orebodies have been discovered at Cannington (silver-lead-zinc), Century (zinclead-silver), Ernest Henry and Osborne (copper-gold) and extensions to known deposits at Dugald River and George Fisher (zinc-lead-silver), and Esperanza (copper). This success is of global significance and reflects a prospectivity upgrade since widespread copper mineralisation was discovered and mined in the Cloncurry district a century ago.

Commencing in 1956, Rio TInto Australian Exploration Pty Limited in association with Electrolytic Zinc Co of Australasia, Limited, has been carrying out a mineral prospecting program in North-West Tasmania over an area of about 4000 square miles.The program has comprised extensive airborne geophysical surveys, detailed geological mapping, ground geophysical and geochemical investigations. Out of the wealth of new data, and the examination of previous records, has emerged a new structural concept of regional ore control and distribution in North-West Tasmania. This roncept stems from the discovery of an ancient 'fossil' rift valley (graben), named the Owen Rift Valley, along which are located the major mines of the area and numerous well-known prospects. The known mines and prospects from north to south include Mt Bischoff (tin); the Pinnacles (zinc, lead, ropper); the Chester (pyrites); Rosebery-Hercules (lead, zinc, ropper, silver, gold); Mt Tyndall (lead, ropper, zinc); Comstock and Tasman (copper, lead, zinc); Mt Lyell (copper, pyrites, gold); Mt Jukes and Mt Darwin (ropper). The identification of the West Coast (Owen Conglomerate) Range as a fossil rift valley is due to Or B Campana, who carried out extensive geological mapping and interpretation work, and who, with S B Dickinson, are the senior authors of this paper.S B Dickinson, who introduced B Campana to the geological problems of West Tasmania, had previously investigated the Mt Lyell and Rosebery mining fIeld, to which reference is made in this work.D King assisted in the regional mapping and in providing numerous data on the mineral distribution of the area.R S Matheson rontributed to the fmdings on ore emplacement and rontrol in the discussions held on this subject. The selection of an appropriate mining method should take into account the geometry of the deposit and its physical properties. Other factors which assist in the determination are the requirements for flexibility in the mining process, minimisation of risk factors and maximising the financial return. Several established mining methods exist which can encompass the requirements to deliver the optimum mining method, this can be in both an underground or open cut environment. The objective is to outline these methods and where they can be applied in a mining project.

Opencast Lignite Mining requires topwall strata of seams to be fully depleted and footwall aquifers sufficiently depressurized. To prevent a spread of the cone of depression into protected wetlands some distance away, alternatives had been investigated such as closing water works, underground slurry wall barriers and recharge by infiltration. As a result of these investigations, the infiltration method has been chosen and in a first phase during the next decade it will utilize as much as 55 x 106 m3/year. Using this approach, the survival of the wet lands is assured.

The Racecourse Orebodies at Mount Isa consist of a series of parallel steeply dipping lead/zinc/silver orebodies with a strike length of up to 1000 metres. Production from these orebodies between 13 Level to 9 Level has been by a series of cut and fill stopes in two level stages, leaving a crown pillar at 11 level. Development of the 15 level to 13 level extraction stage has recently been completed. The layout consists of a series of parallel stopes over a strike length of 1200 metres. Access to the stopes is by two declines connecting the stopes with a series of crosscuts This paper describes the basic layout with development and production methods employed.

Ore-hosting breccias occur in a wide variety of environ-ments, shapes, compositions and characteristics, but generally present favorable loci for the deposition of ore mineralization in epithermal, porphyry copper-gold-molybdenum, massive sulfide, carbonate-hosted, sedimentary lead-zinc deposits and others.

Establishing the link between the solid, cold rock of dikes, sills, plutons, and lavas and hot, active magma chambers is the quest of igneous petrology. Differentiation of Earth, the diversity of the igneous rocks, and the spectacle of volcanism are ample evidence that magmatic processes are fundamental to our understanding of planet formation and evolution. Single gabbroic plutons, on the other hand, often show intricate and abundant evidence of the effects of crystal growth and sorting. It has not proven simple, however, to establish the basic principles of magmatic behavior leading to this crucial evidence. Because of their abundance, exposure, simple geometry, large range in size, and often straight-forward petrology, sills are excellent examples of the magma chambers. Physical and chemical processes operating in sills can be recognized that also routinely operate in many other bodies. Understanding the dynamics of sill solidification is essential to understanding the genetic links between lavas and plutons.

Advanced preparation techniques open new ways for SEM and X-ray diffraction (XRD) investigations on hydrating cementitious systems. In this paper the early time hydration of Portland cement is studied with advanced cryo scanning electron microscopy techniques in combination with in situ X-ray diffraction and heat-flow calorimetry. The application of preparation techniques and analytical methods to Portland cement hydration are presented and discussed. Some aspects of hydration reactions are focused. The reaction products of the first minutes, changes in ettringite morphology, AFm formation during the deceleration period and the visualisation of C-S-H microstructures were special points of interest. X-ray diffraction analyses and Cryo-SEM images gave essential information about phase development, reaction kinetics, microstructure and morphology of hydration products. Portlandite, AFt and AFm phases were detected by in situ XRD. Cryo-SEM analyses enabled high resolution imaging and EDX-analyses of cement particles and reaction products. The results of the different analytical methods were compared to obtain detailed information about crystallisation processes and microstructural development during the first three days of Portland cement hydration.

In a country richly endowed in mineral wealth, Climax Arintco Mining Corporation's ICAMC) Dinkidi porphyry Au-Cu deposit in Nueva Vizcaya, Philippines, represents the most significant mineral discovery in this country in recent times. The deposit is located within a belt of young intrusive and volcanic rocks in the Sierra Madre mountain chain of north Luzon, a region previously unassociated with porphyry -style mineralisation.Since 1989, drilling of the Dinkidi deposit has outlined a resource of 124 million tonnes of 1.0 g/t gold and 0.4 per cent copper. Regional exploration throughout CAMC's 37 000 hectare FTAA has identified a further 16 potential porphyry-related deposits.

Two magnetic parameters are proposed as a basis for the assessment of ironsands beneficiation. The parameters are deter- mined for raw sand prior to dredging and for magnetic separator head feed over a production period of five months. The relationships between these parameters and the performance of the magnetic separators are examined to establish the value of magnetic assessment compared with the traditional soluble iron assay method. The results illustrate that the first parameter, true magnetic fraction (TMF), has a value superior to that of soluble iron when relating raw sand grade calculated by tri- angulation to magnet performance. In terms of the relationship between magnet head feed grade and magnet performance, TMF and soluble iron perform equally as assessment parameters. For the ironsands mined during the five month period, the second magnetic assessment parameter, composite fraction (CR), is shown to merely reflect TMF and offers no additional information for assess- Ment. Conclusions are that true magnetic fraction has many advantages over soluble iron in terms of time and cost of determination and that it is a meaningful and reliable parameter upon which to base all calculations relating to the mining and beneficiation of ironsands.

The objective in design of an excavation in a jointed rock mass is to achieve a prescribed degree of control of rock mass displacement around the excavation. Any excavation in jointed rock usually involves slip and separation along discontinuities as well as translation and ro- tation of constituent rock blocks. Thus, any acceptable model of behavior around an excava- tion must be capable of simulating the force displacement paths followed by the constituent elements, including rigid body translation and rotation. The distinct element method models such behavior by simulating the rock mass as an assemblage of rock blocks which interact through corner and edge contacts. Discontinuities are regarded as boundary interactions between blocks with joint behavior prescribed for these inter- actions. Introduction of structural element logic allows a variety of installed support sys- tems to be modeled. The response of the support to axial, transverse, and flexural loads is based on explicit algorithms similar to those used in the distinct element formulation. This allows large displacements and rotations and general non-linear constitutive behavior for both the support elements and the interface with the rock. This paper describes both the distinct element and structural element formulations and demonstrates several applications involving sup- port interaction with jointed rock.

Base metal mineralisation occurs at several locations within the regionally metamorphosed Kanmantoo Group on the southeastern flank of the Mount Lofty Ranges between Kanmantoo and Strathalbyn, 50 km southeast of Adelaide. Sulphide mineralisation is of three main types (Seccombe et al, 1985):1. copper deposits, at the Kanmantoo and Bremer mines, South Hill prospect and several minor occurrences,2. lead-zinc deposits at Aclare, Wheal Ellen, Strathalbyn, St. Ives, Scott's Creek, and Glenalbyn mines,3. pyrite-pyrrhotite mineralisation of the Nairne pyrite deposit and many other pyritic schist units within the Kanmantoo Group.Syntheses of folding, metamorphism and stratigraphy of the Kanmantoo Group were given by Kleeman and Skinner (1958), Offler (1960, 1963), Offler and Fleming (1968), Marlow (1975), Mancktelow (1979) and Parker (1986). Studies of the general relationships of mineralisation to structure in the Kanmantoo area were given by Grasso and McManus (1954), Mirams (1962), Poole (1969), and Lindqvist (1969).Several conflicting views on the origin of mineralisation in the Kanmantoo Group have been proposed. Thomson (1975) considered much of the mineralisation as a late-stage product of regional metamorphism and he, like Parker (1986) and Lambert et al (1987), stressed the importance of major lineaments as an ore control. However, Lindqvist (1969) and Verwoerd and Cleghorn (1975) tentatively suggested a syn-sedimentary origin to the Kanmantoo copper deposit and Jensen and Whittle (1969) and Seccombe et al. (1985) on the basis of sulphur isotope data proposed a bacteriogenic sulphur source and a sedimentary origin for sulphides in the Nairne pyrite deposit. The latter suggested that most copper deposits represent stockwork, vein or disseminated zones within subsurface vents whereas massive mineralisation at Wheal Ellen and Aclare mines probably accumulated on the ocean floor.This paper presents new geological information on the structural and metamorphic setting of the base metal deposits and attemptsto relate this information to previous regional studies of the Kanmantoo Group. Estimates of pressure and temperatureof peak metamorphic conditions based on silicate mineral stabilities are considered in relation to various silicate and sulphidegeothermometers which have not previously been applied to rocks in the Kanmantoo Group.

The investigation of the explosion characteristics of nine Bowen Basin (Central Queensland) dust samples in a suitable coal dust explosion chamber using a new dust concentration probe provides several advances in the area of coal dust explosibility testing. The 20 litre explosion chamber, of novel design, uses rotation of the main body of the chamber together with air jets for dust dispersion, and allows testing of different types of explosion initiators and analysis of the explosion characteristics of coal dust/methane mixtures of varying concentrations.A new development was a dielectric dust probe for the measurement of coal dust concentration. A capacitive micrometry technique was successfully adapted to measure dust concentration. The system uses a ratio-transformer bridge for measurement of small changes in a capacitive probe designed to sample a representative volume. The device is accurate, and is capable of operating in the hostile environment within the explosion chamber.The explosion chamber and dust probe characterise the explosive potential of coal dust samples by determination of the dust lean limit concentration in varying mixture with methane. Plots of lean limit points obtained in this way present an explosion curve for each sample which indicates the potential of the coal dust/methane to explode under the conditions of initiation in the chamber. The explosion curve obtained for each sample presents a unique signature that appears to reflect the physical and chemical characteristics of the dust.The results from this series of laboratory experiments appear to provide a useful index and indicate potential areas of interest for future research.

In order to satisfy environmental and mine operational requirements it is becoming increasingly important to minimise ground blast vibrations at certain locations. These locations are often in soil or on large resonant structures such as grain silos, highway bridges or even the walls of an open pit. A soil monitoring exercise was carried out to evaluate the common practice of coupling vibration detectors to the ground using spikes. At a series of locations in an operating quarry the spiked array response to single blastholes was compared with that of an accelerometer array attached to a calibrated embedded mount. The results clearly showed that the spiked arrays over-estimated the true ground vibration by 46.5 per cent on average, with a maximum observed error of 99.2 per cent. These errors are considered too large for compliance monitoring where accurate vibration levels are required for comparison with prescribed limits. Although spike coupling is convenient, its use for compliance monitoring should be viewed with caution. Unfortunately, however, many manufacturers supply their detectors as spiked arrays. A structural monitoring exercise was also carried out to evaluate the vibration response of a grain silo, highway bridge and a pit wall to the initiation of single blastholes. In this case accelerometers and standard geophones were firmly attached to the bridge which resonated at low frequencies. The results clearly show that, due to their limited low-frequency response, the geophones typically measured only half the true vibration level as measured by the accelerometers.

The EastLink project is a 39 km tollway to the east of Melbourne and includes twin three-lane 1.5 km driven tunnels. The hard rock tunnels are being built to avoid passing the motorway through the Mullum Mullum Valley to help preserve the unique flora and fauna in the area. This paper describes the process of transferring the support requirements from the ædrawing boardÆ to the tunnelling face by integrating the temporary support design with the contractorÆs tunnel excavation and support procedures, including sharing of responsibility between the designer and contractor for selection of the support type and the production of a project specific rock mass classification system to enable more objective determination of ground conditions. The methods developed during the design phase incorporated a formal system of reviews, support selection and feedback by monitoring tunnel and ground responses. During construction, the process was implemented using a set of simple documentation and regular structured communication between the contractor and the designer.
