This paper addresses; land use, rehabilitation and the State/Federal regulatory process, in light of Australia signing various international conventions and agreements in the area of environmental protection. The conventions on biological diversity, climate change and the implications of the Rio and Agenda 21 declarations are examined. The implementation of these initiatives through the Inter-Governmental Agreement on the Environment, and through legistlative mechanisms at Federal and State level is explored.Particular attention is given to the biodiversity strategy in context of the need to integrate economic aspirations and environmental concerns as a basis for sustsainable development. The paper concludes with a brief comparison of the major approval processes in each State, relating to mining environmental issues.

Until recently the Corus IJmuiden pellet plant produced approximately 4.5 Mtpa of pellets. Corus IJmuiden is currently running a program to increase its pig iron production to 6.4 million tonnes HM per annum. The burden of the Corus IJmuiden blast furnaces consists of approximately 50 per cent high basicity sinter and 50 per cent acid pellets, both produced in-house. To accommodate the increased pig iron production, the capacity of the pellet plant needed to be increased to 5.0 Mtpa. The productivity was increased by modifications to the plant layout, which were implemented during the 2006 cold maintenance stop. In addition, the composition of the ore blends is optimised to gain productivity.

A simple and rapid method for delennining gold and silver in carbon samples is described. The method involves dissolution of carbon ash in a strong oxidising medium of aqua regia and hydrofluoric acid. Gold and silver are determined in the resultant solution using atomic absorption speetrometry (AAS). The method is efficient and reproducible. Gold results are comparable to the standard fire assay results, with agreement of results within ± 5 per cent. The co-efficients of variation for gold and silver are 0.37 and 0.39 per cent respectively for six replicate analyses. The analysis of gold and silver in a batch of ten carbon samples can be completed in approximately four hours.

Taiwan is situated between Ryukyu and the Philippines with 35,960 sq. km of area, being slightly larger than Belgium It has roughly a spindle-shaped outline with a longitudinal axis extending in a roughly north-south direction. Geologically, Taiwan is extremely complex in terms of its tectonic setting in the convergence zone between the Asian continent and the Philippine Sea Plate. To the east of Taiwan, the Philippine Sea Plate subducts beneath the Ryukyu island arc, and to the south of Taiwan the Philippine Sea Plate overrides the Asian plate along the Manila Trench. Taiwan, therefore, occupies an unstable region between these two well-defined subduction systems of opposite polarity (see the following block diagram).

The process uses sodium hydroxide and sodium nitrate reagents as in conventional Harris refining plants, selectively removing the arsenic to the caustic phase at an operating temperature of 420-450¦C. A novel feature of the process concept is continuous treatment of loaded caustic slag for recovery of arsenic as a sandy crystal product suitable for further processing to arsenic trioxide. A large pilot plant was constructed and operated over a period of 3 years to develop materials handling techniques and equipment components and to prove the concept. Stable operations were achieved at equivalent capacities of 200 tonne/yr arsenic removal. The process is being considered in plans for expansion of bullion softening capacity at Port Pirie.

Many high temperature industrial processes involve gaseous halogen-bearing environments. Essentially, these fall into three subject areas: power generation, waste incineration and especially extractive metallurgy. Fundamental to any understanding of the process chemistry and efficiency in the process technology is an adequate knowledge of background thermodynamics relating to metal-chlorine reactions. In this context, existing free energy/temperature diagrams for metal chlorides do not include many elements, in particular the so called refractory elements from Group V and Group VI of the Periodic Table, namely niobium, tantalum and vanadium, and molybdenum. This paper reports estimation and calculations of the free energy values for these chlorides. The data is discussed in the context of high temperature chlorination processes.

Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines Pty Ltd (KCGM) is a management company, formed in 1989, to manage the assets and operate the Kalgoorlie joint venture for the owner companies Gold Mines of Kalgoorlie Limited (GMK) and Homestake Gold of Australia Limited (HGAL). Mining is still in progress on the 'Golden Mile' and surrounding areas more than 100 years after Paddy Hannan's discovery adjacent to the active Mt Charlotte mine. From 1893 until 30 June 1995 the Kalgoorlie Goldfields has produced approximately 45 million ounces (-1400 tonnes) of gold from mining and treating about 179 million tonnes of ore. The cylinder test allows us to determine the expansion of a copper cylinder by the detonation of an explosive charge inside. This test, originally designed for military explosives, has been adapted for industrial explosives with non-ideal behaviour. From data obtained with this test and known physical relationships, an analytical procedure has been developed to calculate the Jones-Wilkins-Lee (JWL) equation of state parameters for five ammonium nitrate/fuel oil (ANFO) and six emulsion-type explosives. A new radial wall expansion function is proposed considering a non-zero initial velocity with the consequent positive Gurney energy at unit relative volume. A set of equations is established to determine the JWL parameters, three of them obtained at the Chapman-Jouguet (CJ) point and the other three at different relative volumes. These equations, along with some constraints to ensure a physically sound solution, are solved for the JWL parameters by a non-linear least squares scheme. A 2D Lagrangian axisymmetric finite elements (FE) numerical model is developed for each tested explosive to validate the analytical results, in terms of expansion histories, with good agreement. This confirms that the set of conditions, constraints on the parameters and least squares calculation used constitute a robust methodology that fully captures the physics of the detonation products expansion involved in the cylinder test.CITATION:Castedo, R, Sanchidrián, J A, López, L M, Segarra, P and Santos, A P, 2015. Getting it right is a very profitable outcome. Shareholders would ideally like to see their directors get it right all the time on the major economic decisions. But it is very difficult for mining directors to get it right all the time in such an uncertain environment. Primary decision-makers of companies with significant stakes in the mining industry should get it right much more frequently. The legal measures of evidence (beyond reasonable doubt and on the balance of probabilities) can be used to determine whether grade estimates (a key revenue variable) are realistic. The application of this approach can be far reaching. More frequently correct decision-making would result in more effective allocation of limited resources (capital and labour). In turn, this would result in higher financial returns and a more extensive mining industry.

Block caving is the most economic underground methods for excavating massive orebodies, due to the high productivity and low production costs. The success of block caving operations depends on the fragmentation and draw control as large blocks decrease the equipment efficiency, inhibit the material flow and may lead to expensive secondary blasting. Even though ore handling system design, as well as overall economic results, both critically rely on secondary fragmentation, this parameter continues to be one of the least understood issues in the caving operations.This research focuses on the experimental study of secondary fragmentation, considering the impact of vertical pressures and material flow. Experiments using a load-haul-dump extraction system were conducted under laboratory conditions to quantify the influence of pressure and particle size on secondary fragmentation. Results demonstrate that increasing the vertical pressure (simulating deeper conditions) leads to higher fragmentation (smaller particle size) and greater fines generation during draw. The experimental results were applied to calibrate the developed mathematical model based on kinetic matrix. The acceptable accordance between the comminution model results and the reality showed that this method is convenient in predicting the secondary fragmentation in block caving.CITATION:Castro, R, Gómez, R, Casali, A and Hekmat, A, 2016. International tenders for contract mining opportunities require the Contractor to make an assessment of risk for an operation with a life span of up to twenty-five years usually based on data made available by the Client. This paper seeks to address how the Contractor assesses the data and quantifies the risks associated with the project. The areas of risk are common to most projects, but in the--Lontractor's case, risk assessment is carried out on the Client's data base and within a compressed time frame of usually less than six months. Incorporation of that risk assessment into the contract documentation is also discussed. Practical examples are given in a number of areas.

Aims of the Forum A contribution from Dr Robin Batterham, Vice President, RIO TINTO Research & Technology and a member of The AusIMM Standing Technology Advisory Qroup. Dr Robin Batterham is of view that the inevitability of automation in the minerals industry and the importance of addressing the human implications. He also outlined Rio Tinto's approach to automation. The progressive introduction of automation into mining operations will be revolutionary in its effects. This is the experience in other industries and it will be no different in mining. Mining companies most successful at implementing the new technologies will gain relative competitive advantage and those manufacturers who produce the most desirable automated equipment for miners will also gain market share.

Staff turnover percentages on projects in the minerals sector are at levels that would not be accepted in business less than five years ago. While this is being driven in part by the shortage in skills to service the industry there are underlying factors, beyond the increases in remuneration, adding to the turnover. Having identified the five major reasons why people do not stay, this paper confirms that leaders and the various styles are common to all companies. The paper comments briefly on these major reasons and suggests the problem is firmly with management. It also offers possible remedies to reduce the attrition and therefore improve the opportunities for a quality project evaluation.

A report is given of the problems of finance and physical resources that currently affect The University of New South Wales, and of some of the measures adopted to alleviate them. Partly as' a result of review procedures, a School of Mines was formed to amalgamate Applied Geology and Mining Engineering, and to add the skills of extractive metallurgy to produce a group to match the needs of the minerals industry. A review of courses within the School indicated a need for enhanced computer teaching, which is partially negated by a lack of resources. It also shows an overcrowded course whose structure could possibly benefit from a split into managerial and specialist streams.

The Amazon Craton is one of the largest cratonic areas and comprises one of the est-endowed metallogenic provinces in the world. It hosts a number of different ore deposit types for which a variety of mineral exploration data are presently available at various scales and formats. These data, however, are not properly organised nor integrated by means of advanced spatial analysis tools. In this view, here we present a suite of neural network methods that were applied to these data, providing unprecedented mineral potential scenarios for several precious and base metals in the region. Environmental and amenity factors have introduced a new dimension to the technical problems of the mining industry in finding, extracting and processing the mineral and energy products on which we all depend. Intervention by outside regulatory bodies is restricting the production of minerals and denying the industry access to large areas in which the orebodies of the future may occur. The solution lies to a large extent within the industry itself and appropriate management techniques are necessary to ensure that exploration and mining are seen as an acceptable as well as a necessary land use. Close liaison between operators and the responsible authority is necessary to achieve these objectives and to make the best use of our land resources.

One of the mining worldÆs greatest challenges is to effectively use consumables (ie reagents and grinding media) to maximise metallurgical response, while minimising operating costs. It is anticipated that this paper will provide a logical frame work within which this can be achieved. The current study, at PerilyaÆs Broken Hill concentrator in the lead primary grinding/roughing circuits, examines the dependency of collector adsorption on Eh. The data demonstrates clearly that under the right grinding chemistry the addition of a xanthate collector during grinding can improve galena flotation. Further, operating the ball mill under the desired grinding chemistry regime leads to significant reductions in collector consumption whilst maintaining the metallurgical benefit.

Economic mathematical methods have been developed and applied in the design, planning, development and managing stages in the mining industry. Economic and technological efficiency is achieved with the aid of a large range of probability models, which are used to enable decisions to be made progressively during the different stages. The entire operation is considered as a total system made up of sub- systems and the models representing these are consecutively interrelated with each other. Algorithms and programmes representing the economic mathematical models for all the stages involved were tested and were found to be applicable to the various important mines in the Donetsk basin. Currently, these models are accepted and widely used.

The annual growth in lead consumption in the Western world has declined sharply in the past ten years, as lead has suffered a wave of substitution by other materials, and has also been the object of concern about its toxicity in daily applications. Like most metal industries, the lead industry has tended to be more production-oriented than market-oriented than is the case with some of its competitors. However, in recent times this pessimism and preoccupation with weathering the threats from environmental legislation, substitution and low prices appears to have been replaced with a new optimism in some sectors of the industry. This is indicated by renewed promotional activities and efforts to find more applications and market opportunities.

Since its introduction in 1989, the Australasian Joint Ore Reserves Code (the JORC Code or the Code) has been one of the success stories of the informational interface between the mining industry and investors. This is due variously to the user-friendly nature of the Code itself, to its practical approach to this complex subject, and to the way in which its requirements have been implemented in practice. Recognition of its utility and effectiveness has influenced a significant number of mining countries to re-assess their reporting standards with the positive outcome being that for the first time, a set of standard international definitions for reporting of mineral resources and reserves is a realistic possibility.
