Anglo American Chile has been doing copper concentrate leaching studies at the laboratory and small pilot plant scale since 1992. Among the processes evaluated are bacterial leaching and pressure leaching using Mantos Blancos, Salobo Project and Quellaveco Project concentrates. Late in the nineties, it was decided to focus the research on pressure leaching, either medium or total pressure oxidation. Preliminary scouting tests were run with Mantos Blancos concentrate samples during 2000, which were repeated during 2003 together with samples of Los Bronces and El Soldado concentrates, in order to define the most suitable concentrate for running a pilot plant campaign at AARL, which was carried out in two campaigns, a first one from November 2003 through January 2004 and a second one during April 2004. Mantos Blancos was the selected concentrate and the laboratory and pilot plant results are discussed in this paper together with some preliminary economic estimates.

"Mining is a major energy intensive industry that contributes in consuming about 7% of the total world’s energy in which almost half in comminution. The underlying trait that drives energy consumption upwards appears to be somewhat persistent due to increasing in population, demands and growth rate. High grade resources have been/being depleted; consequently, low grade, high competent and complex ores with complicated geological structure are brought into perspective. For efficient extraction of values from such resources comprehensive multistage mining and processing strategies must be taken into account. Different treatment technologies, including ore sorting, must be considered to improve resource efficiency and productivity while taking into account the reduction in energy and water consumptions and related sustainability issues.The implementation of sorting technology in mining industry has a long past and its impacts on improving the overall efficiency of both mining and milling have been proven. However, the lack of complete understanding of its potential combined with ore complexity and low capacity of sorting machines have prevented the large scale application in mining industry. The application of X-Ray transmission sorting at Mittersill Tungsten Mine in Austria is presented and discussed herein. A technoeconomic analysis of the technology has revealed a significant potential of adding value to the concentration process. The rough feasibility study has given a strong feed-back on profitability and short time payback of about 2 years for the investment. Except the economic benefits the technology has positive environmental impacts. The potential for saving energy and water is large. The rough calculations have revealed that the energy saving can be up of 840MWh/annum. Furthermore, the ongoing cooperation between Mittersill mine and the sorting manufacturer is a good example on how the development of more competitive products, and product offerings, can be made."

This paper describes flotation test work conducted over the past several years at the Mines Branch, Ottawa, on the radioactive quartz-pebble conglomerate ores of the Elliot Lake area of Ontario. The purpose of this work has been to produce a uranium flotation concentrate for sub-sequent leaching operations. The results of earlier investigations are summarized and correlated with the results of mineralogical studies of the ores and flotation products. The results of recent pilot-plant investigations by flotation, as well as by gravity concentration followed by flotation of the gravity tailings, are given. The principal collector used for uranium flotation was a tall oil fatty acid, and the indicated total cost of all reagents ranged from 21 to 31 cents per ton of ore treated.

"As mines are constantly growing and expanding, so do the challenges for emergency response teams. They have to keep up with the pace set by current and future production techniques. Although mines have now reached depths of several kilometres and their dimensions and complexity are that of an entire city, mines rescue still must be able to reach the most remote areas within the mine in a swift and safe manner. The duration of breathing apparatus and physical human capabilities are limitations. Therefore, alternative methods have to be explored to extend the time under oxygen for mine rescue teams without putting additional stress on the team members. To address this global trend, Dräger, Goldcorp and PAUS have partnered to develop a mine rescue vehicle that allows mine rescue teams to travel for an extended period of time through a contaminated atmosphere without the use of breathing apparatus, thus extending the range of their mission. By applying currently available techniques, the safe expansion of mine production can be ensured, giving mine rescue teams the ability to respond to accidents in a safer and faster way. INTRODUCTION With the reduction of easily accessible natural resources, there is a global trend toward searching for higher ore grades underground and/or continually expanding mines underground to extend their lifetime. While in some areas this trend has just begun, in other countries mines are reaching depths or horizontal dimensions that pose extreme challenges (Codelco, 2016). These challenges include safety relevant topics, such as rock stability, heat and seismicity, but also more basic issues such as distances to the working face, which can become crucial considering the cost to develop a new shaft or decline. To overcome this, there is a growing interest in collaboration among various stakeholders to drive the development and support of deeper mines and tackle the complexity of underground mining. This is evidenced by the fact that several industry and research groups and networks have formed, e.g. the I2mine project in Europe and the Ultra-Deep Mining Network by the Centre for Excellence in Mining Innovation in Canada. Due to commodity pricing and the trend toward renewable energy, metal/non-metal mining will be the driving force behind this development."

"Northgate Patino Mines produces a copper concentrate assaying 22% Cu. Moisture content of the product averages 12.5% H20 when dewatering with conventional vacuum disk filters. Recent smelter contracts reflect higher energy costs and increased moisutre penalty charges. This situation forced Northgate to investigate possible alternatives such as rotary dryers and pressure filtration. After laboratory testing, it was found that pressure filtration could economically meet the smelter's requirements. Pilot plant testing was then undertaken and confirmed the laboratory test results. Based on these findings, a model I.S.F. 1500 x 28/22 I.R. In January 1981, a new contract was signed in which the penalty was raised to $1.10 per ton per unit over 8070 . This and the increasing truck and rail costs justified the change-over from vacuum to pressure filtration . The Lasta I.S .F. 1500 x 28/22 was then purchased and installed, and operation of the plant started in December 1981."

Magnesium, the lightest structural metal, has not yet been considered as a serious contestant for automotive use due to its weaknesses in corrosion. Electroless nickel-boron alloys are well known for their corrosion resistance and hardness. An electroless nickel-boron layer was successfully deposited first on the chemical conversion pre-treated AZ31 alloy and also on the Ni-P coating which was deposited on the conversion coating. The electroless bath contained nickel sulphate and dimethylamine borane (DMAB) as main salts and the samples were activated by a 5 g/L AgNO3 solution before the electroless plating process. The presence of the conversion coating between the nickel coating and the AZ31 substrate acted as a barrier and prevented corrosion of the alloy. The morphology of the nickel-boron layer was studied using SEM. The crystal structure and the composition were examined by EDS and the hardness was measured. The corrosion behaviour of the nickel-boron layer deposited on the conversion coating and on the Ni-P coating was studied using potentiodynamic polarization in a 0.5M NaC1 solution. A saturated standard calomel electrode was used as a reference electrode. The results show that the nickel-boron coatings had a significantly better corrosion resistance than the AZ31.

The uranium producing division of Denison Mines Limited operates a 6,000-ton-per-day integrated mining unit in the Algoma area of Ontario. The property is located approximately one and one-half miles from Highway I 08, eight miles north of the town of Elliot Lake. The property was staked in 1953, diamond-drilled in ?late 1954 and 1955, and put into production in 1957. Since that date, the operation has produced $250,000,000 worth of uranium oxide from approximately 11,000,000 tons of ore milled, and paid $18,000,000 in dividends to its shareholders. The operation employs about I000 people, and monthly operating costs are approximately one million dollars. From these figures alone, it is obvious that it was necessary to develop and institute an adequate set ?of controls for effective management at all levels of supervision over a period of four years, a system of production and cost control was developed that enables us to effectively measure the pulse of the various phases of the operation at any given time.

"In Canada and other countries, legislation dealing with accurate factual disclosure for mining projects is being expanded to include more metallurgical design information. Grinding characteristics, metallurgical recovery of contained metal and environmental hazards associated with tailings disposal will be part of the Canadian package. This paper will examine only that portion of the plant design standard practice that relates to grinding – in SAG mills and ball mills that grind ore from as received crushed material to final ground product that is fed to downstream plant recovery processes. Since grinding plants represent a significant portion of the overall concentrator cost, accountability in grinding design should no longer be left to chance, opinion, or hidden proprietary information. This is the 21st century. It is reasonable to expect that a factual basis will be needed so that a Qualified Person (QP) reviewing the grinding mill design can understand it. That will also involve how many and what quality of samples are taken to define the characteristics of the deposit, the accuracy of the tests used to measure ore hardness and the method by which the dimensions and power of the mills are determined. If these criteria are not met, the QP may have no choice but to call attention to the lack of convincing information regarding the grinding mill design for the project. At the same time clients are expected to demand getting the correct design information at a cheaper price, results in a more timely way, and accurate design to the point where the risk of tonnage shortfalls are reduced or eliminated.Tables will be presented to show how this can be done to current standards using existing technologies. At the same time it is acknowledged that current standards are ill-defined and that to achieve consensus among those involved in SAG mill design work, it may require that a consortium funded project be set up to establish what tests and methods for grinding design are suitable to meet the new standards for metallurgical disclosure. By running parallel design methods on several major projects over a period of 5 years, the process of how to design grinding circuits will be better understood because the projects will start at the design stage, include procurement of the mills and will end with a benchmark test on the plant.Selecting the samples and the best schedule for doing test work on core samples submitted and mill design, will be discussed in this paper. The issue of completing the grinding design in time for early procurement decisions is on the critical path for most major projects. Discussions between mining engineers, geologists and process engineers are needed early in the development cycle, at the scoping study level (SS), preliminary engineering assessment (PEA), prefeasibility study (PFS), and at the feasibility study stage (FS), to ensure that proper planning for design sample selection is done. Using adequate sampling and testing methods in a timely way allows early procurement of the grinding mills and minimizes project risk."

"THE ISLANDS lying north of the Canadian mainland, and the large Boothia and Melville peninsulas, form one of the great archipelagos of the world; this sparsely vegetated and nearly unpeopled region extends about 1,500 miles east to west and 1,200 miles from the mainland to the northern tip of the northern-most island. Sea access to most of the islands is restricted by ice to the summer season, and the 'polar pack' ice of the Arctic Ocean presses the year round against the northwest margin of the archipelago. Although the region is remote, the accessibility has greatly increased through a network of weather stations, airfields and air routes connecting with southern centres.The area considered in this paper is that part of the island region underlain mainly by sedimentary rocks. In broad terms, this includes the land and sea areas of the archipelago and the adjacent continental shelf, but excludes the dominantly 'Shield' terrain of Baffin Island, and of Melville and Boothia peninsulas. An impression of the size and potential of this sedimentary region may be gained by comparing some areas: the land area of islands underlain mainly by sedimentary rocks is over 300,000 square miles or about 50,000 square miles greater than the area of Alberta. The total area of the region, including the continental shelf and the inter-island areas, may be double this figure, and may approximate one-seventh of the land area of Canada."

"Barite is used extensively by the oil and gas well-drilling industry as a weighting agent. It is particularly well suited for drilling mud because of its qualities; it is non-abrasive, heavy, virtually inert chemically, easy to handle and inexpensive compared to other available heavy materials. Increased deep well drilling in Western Canada, and especially in the Arctic regions, could dramatically affect the demand for barite through this decade. Known deposits in northeast British Columbia are possible sources of incremental barite supplies, should the situation develop.IntroductionThe purpose of this report is to examine the opportunities for expanding barite production in British Columbia. Of primary interest will be the relationship between the projected future levels of production and consumption of barite in Western Canada and the extent to which increased domestic production could replace the need for imports in filling any expected supply shortages.After a brief overview of the nature and uses of barite and some of the relevant features of the barite supply industry, the discussion will turn to the supply gap in the Canadian market and the possibilities for import substitution.OverviewBarite is an industrial mineral which is used in large quantities by the oil and gas well-drilling industry. It is often an important component of drilling mud, a fluid circulated continuously in the well during the drilling process to lubricate and cool the drilling apparatus and to contain the high oil and gas pressures found at depth. Barite (BaSO4) is particularly well suited as a weighting agent for drilling mud because it is a heavy (specific gravity to 4.5) inert mineral which is inexpensive in relation to other materials having a high specific gravity. In the on-site use of drilling mud, ground barite is combined with numerous other solid ingredients and chemicals in the form of a slurry. Other advantages of barite include cleanliness, ease in handling and its non-abrasive character (hardness of 3-3.5)."

"Mass balances in secondary grinding are subject to critical constraints mainly because of the unknown load distribution from the SAG mills, the uncertainties in the hydrocyclone split estimations and the lack of flowmeters in the key streams. In this paper, a methodology to support mass balances based on the use of radioactive tracer is presented. This approach was successfully implemented in two secondary grinding circuits of Minera Los Pelambres, which operate with ball mills of 21’ x 33.5’. The method allowed the load distribution of the SAG product (secondary grinding feed) to be determined. This load distribution was used as an input in the mass balance data reconciliation.The effective residence times of solid tracers were obtained in the secondary grinding equipment, where irradiated solid was used as a tracer. The residence times were obtained from the parametric deconvolution between the input and output tracer signals. The model fitting was performed to reconstruct the normalized output tracer concentration. Effective residence times of solid tracers in the ball mills ranged from 1.9 min to 9.5 min. The use of radioactive tracer measurement in grinding circuits is a powerful tool to consolidate mass balance results as well as to characterize grinding mills.INTRODUCTIONGrinding is the last stage of the comminution circuits. At this stage, the ore particles are reduced in size by a combination of impact and abrasion, either dry or wet (Austin & Concha, 1994). The grinding equipment mostly used in industrial operations correspond to horizontal tumbling mills (Wills & Napier- Munn, 2006). Tumbling mills employ steel balls or rods as grinding media. Ball mills, which are a type of tumbling mills, use steel grinding media with greater surface area per mass unit than SAG (semiautogenous grinding) mills or rod mills (primary grinding). Hence, the ball mills are suitable to obtain the particle size required in the next separation stages (Napier-Munn et al., 1996; Wills & Napier-Munn, 2006)."

Mr. B. Neilly: A week or so ago the Secretary was good enough to forward me an advance copy of this paper by Mr. Logan and it was suggested that I comment on it at this meeting. At that time I was not very certain that I would be here, so I committed my thoughts to paper. As a matter of courtesy to Mr. Logan, I sent him a copy of my proposed remarks and I would like to give you just what I sent to him. Appreciating fully Mr. Logan's ability and many sources of information, one naturally hesitates to question anything seriously set forth as his considered opinion. Neither does one of my political stripe like to accuse him of being too 'conservative.? However, in places his paper reminds me of another general manager of a Canadian bank. While I was still Secretary of the Ontario Mining Association, this general manager wrote asking for our forecast on the current year's mineral production, stating that he proposed to refer to such production figures in his annual address to his shareholders. The request was considered very complimentary to the Ontario Mining Association and, in my opinion, justified a great deal of serious study and effort. Finally, the estimate was prepared and forwarded, showing a modest increase over the previous year's total. Picture our surprise and chagrin on reading his address to find that he predicted not an increase but, if you please, a decline of over $10,000,000. Before I cooled off I wrote asking the basis of such a prediction and got a reply to the effect that men in his position had to be ultra conservative in picturing the future.

"A series of flotation tests was carried out on Brunswick Mining ore with various pH modifiers (soda ash, lime, KOH) and added ions (ferric, nitrate, sulphate) in the copper lead rougher circuit. The main objective was to identify downstream effects on sphalerite activation and subsequent zinc rougher flotation. Some significant differences in zinc flotation were obtained. Most notably, soda ash and nitrate ions had a positive impact and ferric ions a pronounced negative effect on selectivity.Selected products from the flotation tests were deslimed at 400 mesh, washed with methanol, air dried, placed in teflon vials purged with nitrogen and stored at -15 degrees C. Numerous liberated sphalerite and pyrite particles were selected under a stereoscope and placed in rows on indium foil. The surface compositions of the particles were analyzed with an innovative laser probe (LIMS). The very small analysis area of the LIMS enables the surfaces of individual grains to be characterized. In addition, the rapid analysis time allows a statistically significant number of grains to be analyzed quickly.Surface lead appears to play a major role in zinc activation/flotation. Possible mechanisms are proposed to explain the variations in metallurgical performance at the different test conditions.IntroductionAlthough the bulk composition of mineral grains is an important consideration for the mineral processor it is ultimately surface composition and topography (edges and dislocations preferred sites for reactions) that control reactivity in flotation and cyanidation (passivation, encapsulation and preg-robbing). "Canadian Royalties Inc. owns and exploits the Nunavik Nickel project: a copper and nickel deposit in Nunavik, Quebec. Froth flotation is used to produce nickel and copper concentrates. As is the case at other operations, the presence of magnesium is detrimental to the flotation products. In the past year, the exploitation of a new deposit has increased magnesium in the feed. Thus, it has been challenging to meet the required ratio in the final nickel concentrate. In search for a consistent solution for this problematic, an empirical flotation simulator making use of selectivity curves was developed. The circuit was expressed as a system of linear equations, which considered the distribution of copper, nickel and gangue minerals in the different streams. The relative quantities of each mineral are given by the separation efficiency curves of the various banks in the circuit. Three sources of data were used to calibrate the simulator: historical plant data (metallurgical balance), infinite dilution bench-scale flotation tests, and direct sampling of flotation cells. The calibrated separation curves were used to predict the recovery of the different species based on a single mineral recovery. Validation of the simulator showed good fit for the valuable minerals. The simulator was then used to infer the optimal operating conditions of the flotation circuit to optimise magnesium oxide content of the nickel concentrate. Simulation of two re-arrangements of the circuit gave a promising solution with a Fe:MgO ratio 2.42 times higher than the minimum value.INTRODUCTION Canadian Royalties Inc. owns and exploits the Nunavik Nickel project: a copper and nickel deposit in Nunavik, Quebec. ALBERTA has been generously endowed with oil, natural gas, coal and water power, thus giving power producers a wide choice in the type of plant and fuel which can be used. Therefore, with such a variety of energy sources to choose from, why was coal selected as the primary fuel at Calgary Power's Wabamun steam plant? This part of the paper will cover the circumstances that led the Company to decide in favour of coal. The second part, to be presented by C. F. Doerr, will describe how the Wabamun coal mine has been developed to supply the large fuel requirements of the power plant. Before considering the Wabamun plant, we require a general under-standing of? the Company's electric system and load. Power is fed into a 5,100-mile high-voltage transmission grid from eleven hydroelectric plants and from the Wabamun steam electric plant. "The Mac porphyry molybdenum prospect is located 100 km east of Smithers in central British Columbia. The identification of anomalous levels of molybdenum, copper, and silver in three adjacent lakes, sampled during a regional lake sediment survey, lead to the discovery of molybdenite mineralization in float. Subsequent magnetic and soil geochemistry surveys, together with prospecting and mapping, located the source of the float. Mineralization is hosted by a leucocratic granite stock of the Upper Jurassic to Lower Cretaceous Francois Lake Intrusions which has intruded Carboniferous and Permian Cache Creek Group volcanic and sedimentary rocks. The stock measures 500 m by 300m at surface and is mineralized throughout. Sulphide mineralogy is simple and consists of molybdenite with minor pyrite and local chalcopyrite. Molybdenite occurs within fractures and as selvages along quartz stockwork veins and is best developed near the margins of the stock.Known mineralization is coincident with distinct soil geochemistry and magnetic anomalies. Two additional areas of the property display similar features and these remain to be tested.IntroductionThe Mac property is situated in the Babine Lake area of central British Columbia on NTS map sheet 93K/13E, approximately 100 km east of the town of Smithers (Fig. 1). The property lies on the western margin of the Hogem Range at the northern tip of the Nechako Plateau. The centre of the claim block lies at 54°51 ' 30""N and 125 °34 '30""W.Topographically, the claims are characterized by gently rolling hills ranging in elevation from 900 m to 1500 m. Slopes are forested with tall conifers and underbrush is minimal. Flat-lying areas are swampy with tall grasses and scrub brush.Presently, the property is only accessible by helicopter from bases located in Smithers and Fort St. James. Recent road construction by the British Columbia Forest Service has brought road access from Burns Lake to within 5 km due south of the property. It is expected that in the near future, roads will be advanced into the claim area to facilitate logging of mature timber."

"Recently, the remarkable strengthening effect of ??-Al(Mn, Fe) Si dispersoids at both ambient temperature and elevated temperature were found by several researches. A large amount of dispersoids can be formed by applying special heat treatments and within a suitable range of chemical composition of AA3xxx alloys. In the present work, the influences of Cr addition on the mechanical properties and microstructures of the Al-Mn-Mg-Si alloys were investigated. The mechanical properties at ambient and elevated temperatures were evaluated by micro-hardness and yield strength. Moreover, the microstructures in as-cast and heat-treated conditions were quantitatively analyzed by optical and electron microscopes. Results revealed that Cr also had effect on the number density and volume fraction of dispersoids. Micro-hardness and yield strength at ambient temperature increased with the increasing content of Cr, and the Cr addition increased the yield strength at elevated temperature as well. Moreover, the creep resistance at 300°C improved dramatically with the increasing content of Cr.INTRODUCTION Traditionally, AA3xxx aluminum alloys were widely used in packaging, automobile and architecture industries, because of its good formability, excellent corrosion resistance and weldability. And AA3xxx alloys were considered as non-heat-treatable alloys. However, the strengthening effect of dispersoids in AA3xxx alloys was discovered recently (Li & Arnberg, 2003;Li, Muggerud, Olsen, & Furu, 2012; Li, Zhang, & Chen, 2016; Liu & Chen, 2015).Alarge amount of dispersoids could precipitate by a proper heat treatment.In order to further improve AA3xxxalloys, the composition of the alloys should be optimized. A few previous studies were reported to investigate the influence of compositions on AA3xxx alloys. Adding Mn element could enhance the precipitation of ??-Al(Mn, Fe)Si dispersoids and improve the yield strength(Muggerud, Mørtsell, Li, & Holmestad, 2013), as long as the concentration of Mn was under the solid solution limit. Fe decreased the solubility of Mn and accelerated the precipitation rate of ??-Al(Mn, Fe)Sidispersoids(Li & Arnberg, 2003), the yield strength and creep resistance at elevated temperature could increase with an optimized content of Fe(Liu & Chen, 2016). Mg element would affect the nucleation process of ??-Al(Mn, Fe)Sidispersoids by forming metastable Mg2Si(Hirasawa, 1975; Li, Zhang, & Chen, 2017a; Lodgaard & Ryum, 2000), metastable Mg2Si precipitated during heating process and promoted the precipitation of ??-Al(Mn, Fe)Sidispersoids, moreover, Mg provided solid solution strength for AA3004 alloys(Li et al., 2016). "In March 1988, old Denver flotation cells were removed from Dickenson's Arthur w. White Mill, and a new flotation circuit, consisting of four Prochem rougher cells and a Hydrochem agitated cleaner column, was commissioned. The refractory portion of the gold in the ore is associated with arsenopyrite, therefore the flotation circuit is set up to produce a saleable sulphide concentrate. Tailings from the leach circuit are conditioned prior to being pumped as feed to the flotation circuit. The prototype Hydrochem agitated column has been in operation as a single cleaner stage for rougher concentrate. The effect of flotation circuit changes on gold recovery data, as well as cleaner concentrate production, and development work to achieve the target results, have been investigated. Flowsheet modifications and the resulting circuit performance data, along with test results to date, will be presented.INTRODUCTIONThe mill is capable of treating 1000 stpd of ore averaging approximately 0.30 oz/ton Au. The ore is crushed and ground to 75% - 200 mesh. Gravity concentration, cyanidation, and Merrill - Crowe precipitation yields 84% gold recovery. Detailed descriptions of the comminution, gravity separation, and leaching circuits, as well as background information have been presented elsewhere (Suttill, Van Weert et al). The target cleaner concentrate grade is 1.0 oz/ton Au for custom smelting and refining. Historical gold recovery values of the old circuit was approximately 20% of the gold present in the float feed at the target grade. The recovery value objective set for the new circuit during the planning stages was 50% of the gold present in the flotation feed at 1.0 oz/ton Au in cleaner concentrate."

This paper presents a mathematical solution for creating the most economical pit outline where the TV/BIP ratio upper limit is 12, by combining mining economic theory and the Lerchs-Grossmann (LG) algorithm.
