"A comprehensive froth model has been derived from first principles. It is based on predicting the kinetics of film thinning in the presence of particles of varying sizes and surface hydrophobicity. According to the Reynolds lubrication theory, the thinning of a horizontal film is driven by the excess film pressure (p), which is determined by the capillary pressure (pc) and the disjoining pressure (II). In the presence of particles, macroscopic capillary pressure (pc) is affected by the local capillary pressure (pc,local) in the vicinity of a particle and the number of particles in the film (N1,film), which in turn vary with the hydrophobicity and size of the particles. The Reynolds equation corrected for pc,local and N1,film is then used to predict the time (or froth height) at which a film is thinned to a critical rupture thickness (hcr), which in turn can be predicted using the Vrij’s capillary wave model (1966) after a modification to incorporate the contributions from hydrophobic disjoining pressure (IIhp). The model can predict bubble coarsening represented by the bubble size ratio between the top (d2,t) and bottom (d2,b) of a froth as functions of particle size and hydrophobicity, ? -potentials, frother dosages, froth height, gas flow rate, salt concentration, etc. The model predictions have been verified in experiments.INTRODUCTIONFroth flotation is regarded the best available technology today for upgrading minerals and coal fines. In the pulp phase of a flotation cell, air bubbles collect hydrophobic particles dispersed in it and rise to enter the froth phase on the top. Once in a froth phase, the bubbles coalesce with each other and become larger, resulting in a decreased bubble surface area. Under conditions of limited surface area, less hydrophobic particles drop off the bubble surface and return to the pulp phase. Thus, bubble coarsening provides a useful mechanism of increasing product grades. On the other hand, uncontrolled coarsening results in a decrease in bubble carrying capacity and hence throughput."

"Sensor-based ore sorting is on its way to establish as a standard option for physical separation. The increasing number of installations in coal, iron ore, industrial minerals and hard-rock metal mining segments underlines the technological and financial potential that is beginning to be untapped. The Ma’aden Phosphate installation with 1.650 t/h sensor-based ore sorter feed sets a new benchmark for the possible capacity of stationary installations. Besides stationary installations, including multiple sorters parallel in different size ranges and multiple stages, containerised semi-mobile plants are applied. These offer two advantages, first being the reduction of transport costs when applied close to the mining face. The second is that semi-mobile systems enable processing of tens of thousands of tonnes of ore in a piloting phase with an approximate duration of 0.5 to six months, verifying the results laboratory mini-bulk tests on 5–10 tonnes of sample. This is especially important for low-grade metal ores because of the inherent Fundamental Sampling Error, as well as the Grouping and Segregation Error. The paper elaborates the results achieved within the I2MINE project, treating polymetallic ore at the Boliden Concentrator in Sweden.INTRODUCTIONSensor-based ore sorting (SBS) is becoming a standard option for physical separation, applied in all segments of mineral production. The Umm Wu’al project sets the bar for stationary SBS installations with 1,650 t/h feed (TOMRA, 2015). TOMRA Sorting Solutions has finalised an agreement in cooperation with Outotec to supply Outotec-branded sorting solutions for the mining and metallurgical industry (TOMRA, 2014). Especially for low-grade hard rock metal ores, an interdisciplinary approach is necessary applying experts for all aspects of mineral production. Due to the impact on the whole process stream, it is important on the end user side to have high level managerial support and involve all disciplines to ensure that all stake holders are involved in the analysis."

"Abstract- The Century mine in northwest Queensland,Australia, is a major sediment-hosted zinclead- silver orebody, located within the western Mount Isa Basin. Stratiform, carbonaceous shalehosted mineralization is developed within Proterozoic shale and siltstone sequences of the Lawn Hill Formation. CRA Exploration Pty Ltd (CRAE) discovered the Century deposit in 1990 and open pit mine development commenced in 1998 under the ownership of Pasminco Century Mine Limited (PCML). The deposit contains an identified mineral resource of 105 Mt @ 12.1% Zn + 1.7% Pb + 46 g/t Ag (Broadbent and Waltho, 1998) which is currently being mined at a rate of 5 Mt/y.In December 1998, an exothermic reaction was observed between explosives spilt onto shale drill cuttings from a blasthole. This reaction is referred to as ‘reactive ground’ and has the potential to cause premature detonation of explosives in a charged blasthole with catastrophic consequences. The incident led to a subsequent geological and geochemical assessment of the different rock types at the Century deposit and their potential reactivity with ammonium nitrate-based (AN) explosive products. This assessment was conducted in an attempt to characterize zones safe for blasting with uninhibited AN-based explosive products. A direct result of this study is a set of procedures outlining the use of different AN-based explosives in areas defined as potentially reactive or non-reactive for the different lithologies present. Black shales contained in both the waste and mineralized sequences contain the sulfide mineral pyrite (FeS2), which is thermodynamically unstable with AN contained in commonly used explosives. The potential reactivity of partially weathered pyrite can ultimately result in the decomposition of an AN-based explosive. It was determined that only pyritic black shales showed any potential to react with AN, irrespective of their position in the stratigraphic sequence. Other lithologies present at Century, including Proterozoic sandstone and Cambrian limestone, are classified as non-reactive with AN. This is a geological risk management situation present at the Century mine."

"ANSTO Minerals and Northern Minerals have been working together since 2012 on the process flowsheet development for the Browns Range project for the recovery of the heavy rare earths (Dy – Lu, + Y). Initial efforts were directed toward defining the most efficient and direct flowsheet for the Preliminary Feasibility Study (PFS), issued in June 2014, then towards the Definitive Feasibility Study (DFS), issued in February 2015. These goals were achieved by undertaking comprehensive laboratory and continuous piloting programs. Further improvements to the flowsheet following the DFS have been made. This publication provides an overview of the evolution of the process flowsheet based on these laboratory and piloting programs from the PFS through the DFS and beyond.INTRODUCTIONNorthern Minerals Ltd (Northern) has been working on developing their flagship project at Browns Range for the recovery of the heavy rare earth elements (HRE, Dy – Lu, + Y). The project is located in the north of Western Australia as shown in Figure 1. The Total Mineral Resource at the project is currently estimated at 8.98 Mt @ 0.63% total rare earth oxides (TREO) comprising 56,663 t of contained TREO using a cut-off grade of 0.15% TREO. Of the Total Mineral Resource, 58% is classified as Indicated Resource, with the remainder in the Inferred Resource category.The deposit is characterised by breccia-hosted, hydrothermal, HRE-rich, xenotime mineralisation. The main gangue mineral associated with the xenotime is quartz. The distribution of rare earths (RE) observed for the xenotime mineralisation at Browns Range is presented in Figure 2. Extensive test work has shown that the xenotime can be readily beneficiated to between 20 – 40% rare earth oxide (REO) using a process consisting of crushing and grinding, followed by magnetic separation and flotation steps. Continuous piloting of this process was conducted on ~80 t of trench-sourced ore in late 2013 at SGS Perth, to produce ~2 t of ~20% REO mineral concentrate (MC) for hydrometallurgical testing. The composition of the MC produced during piloting is presented in Table 1."

For the past several months 1 have been considering the functions of this Society and its reasons for continuance. The fact that it is now sixty years old indicates that it must have been of value and we all know that it has contributed much that was worthwhile to Nova Scotia and the Maritime Provinces. The question arises: "What is the future of the Society, and how might its activities be altered to suit present-day activities and to be of even greater value?" Let us analyse the various activities in which we are interested and determine which, if any, are of more value than others. First of all, at least once a year we have a two-day convention which constitutes a holiday for the members and their wives. This has always been well planned and has been much enjoyed. Second, there are many social and business contacts made during the meetings and interim meetings. These certainly tend toward better relations and co-operation between the various people concerned. Mine operators meet other mine operators, engineers, people from the education fields, Department of Mines, and so forth. Various sales contacts are made at these meetings which can be of value and use to both the Company selling and the customer. Third, and of greatest importance in any conference, is the exchange of ideas by the members and by authorities from outside, and the presentation of slides and drawings, or actual visits to operations. It is upon this phase that 1 wish to elaborate. These papers are not only presented to our meetings but are generally published in the C.I.M. Bulletin so that members throughout the Dominion have access to them. Many important papers describing new phases of operations have originated through our Society.

"Operations started at BCL in December 1973J and the smelter is currently in the seventh year of its fifth campaign. The next major shutdown is scheduled for 1995. During the current campaign, a number of major on-line refurbishments have been carried out without any significant disruption to production. These include the complete rebuild of both drying plant electrostatic precipitators, the installation of a new electrostatic precipitator at the flash furnace, the conversion to a distributed control system throughout the smelter, and the installation of a converter air blowing control system.IntroductionBCL Limited operates a nickel-copper mine in northeastern Botswana approximately 100 km southwest of Francistown. Surface operations for the production of high-grade nickel-copper matte at a design capacity of 42 000 metric tonnes per annum, were commissioned in December 1973. Detailed descriptions of the mine and surface facilities have been presented previously(1-3).Over the years, a number of major engineering modifications and metallurgical projects have been carried out to overcome operating difficulties. improve metal recoveries, increase production rates and provide a better working environment.One of the major results of these projects was an increase in the 19805 in flash furnace feed capacity from 70 t/h to 120 t/h of new concentrate with a nominal feed rate of 105 t/h being achieved.(4)Because of the ore characteristics, i.e. a high mass fraction of ore reporting to concentrate, BCL operates one of the highest capacity spray drying plants and flash smelting furnaces in the world(5).A schematic of the BCL smelter is shown in Figure 1. "The two tubes of tunnel Hirschhagen along the highway A44 in Germany, underpass the federal road B7, a railway line and the valley of the river Losse close to the city of Hessisch Lichtenau. The ground in the area consists of Triassic sand- and siltstones (""Buntsandstein"") as well as tertiary clays. Prior to tunneling, the groundwater in the area is planned to be lowered by means of a gallery of deep wells. As a basis for the design of this dewatering gallery, two large pumping tests have been carried out. The results of these tests have been evaluated by means of 3D-Finite Element analyses. By means of the large-scale model, the influence of the anisotropy resulting from jointing and bedding and the influence of fault zones in the area have been taken into account, which lead to a thorough basis for the design of the dewatering gallery.INTRODUCTIONThe 4.2 km long Tunnel Hirschhagen of the highway A 44 crosses below the federal road B7, a railway line and the river Losse close to the city of Hessisch-Lichtenau in central Germany. Both tunnel tubes are located in a subrosion depression in which Triassic sandstone and tertiary clay prevail. It is planned to lower the groundwater table in the area of the meadow of the Losse prior to tunnel heading [1]. Groundwater lowering is planned to be achieved by means of a series of large pumping wells. The bottom of the river Losse will be sealed in order to avoid direct inflow of water from the river into the ground (Fig. 1 and 2)."

"Flotation process has had less success to recover nickel from laterite ores. Nickel in laterite ores is often finely disseminated in various minerals in very fine size. Therefore, fine grinding should be used to liberate nickel containing particles. Particles resulted from fine grinding are often very fine, and recovery of such particles is generally low using conventional flotation methods. One option to overcome this problem is enhancing the particle-bubble interaction by increasing the particle size and forming flocs. Selective flocculation of fine particle can be therefore the key to enhance the flotation performance of low grade laterite ores.INTRODUCTIONThe majority of the world’s nickel resources occur as laterite ores which are complex, low grade and expensive to treat using conventional smelting and high temperature and/or high pressure autoclave methods (Xu et al., 2013). While about 70% of the nickel resources are contained in laterites, only 40% of the world’s nickel production comes from these ores. Researchers have tried to improve the nickel laterite flotation recovery by using a number of feed preparation techniques. For example, in a study on a laterite ore sample from Australia, flotation tests on a narrow sized fraction of 38-75 µm resulted in only a small increase in the nickel content, from 1.0% to 1.4% (Quast et al., 2015a). In fact, no physical separation technique (including flotation) has been able to dramatically upgrade nickel in laterite ores (Quast et al., 2015b). Thus the challenge of processing low grade nickel laterite ores still exists. This paper aims to explore the possibility of applying selective aggregation in pre-concentrating of valuable minerals in nickel laterite ores."

A new technology is available to the Ni mining and remediation community to “phytomine” Ni from mineralized or contaminated soils using rare plants which hyperaccumulate Ni to over 1% of shoot dry matter. Research has identified useful plant species, and even bred improved cultivars of Alyssum murale and Alyssum corsicum for commercial phytomining in temperate regions. All agronomic practices (fertilization, soil amendments, planting and harvest methods) needed for economic phytomining were identified to attain high yields and high Ni concentration in the biomass. In tropical regions, other species are available such as Phyllanthus which accumulate over 1% Ni in dry shoots. These species are perennial so they regrow after annual cutting to harvest biomass. Expiration of our patents on the technology opens the opportunity for other organizations which control Ni rich natural soils or contaminated soils requiring remediation to commercialize the technologies. Inexpensive methods to remediate/revitalize Ni contaminated phytotoxic soils using agronomic approaches have also been developed and demonstrated at Port Colborne, Ontario, but adoption is delayed until formal agreements with government are completed. These new simple remediation and profitable phytomining technologies can obtain Ni from soils which contain Ni well below levels considered economic for current mining technologies, and the plants biopurify the Ni so it is easy to recover Ni metal from plant ash by pyrometallurgical or hydrometallurgical technologies. Although increasing pH decreases the solubility of Ni in all soils, raising pH increases Ni accumulation by Alyssum species. Hence usual chemical extraction methods for phytoavailable soil metals such as the DTPA- or NH4-OAc-extraction cannot predict Ni accumulation by Alyssum species.

Catalyst systems comprising (Ph3P)AuCH3 and acid co-catalysts were found to be highly efficient for hydration of alkynes to give ketones. Methanol was the best choice of solvents. Introduction Hydration of carbon-carbon unsaturated bonds is one of the environmentally benign routes to the carbon-oxygen bond formation. Hydration of alkynes forming carbonyl compounds, an important variation in this category, is a well known reaction which has been extensively studied. The reaction by acid-catalysis is the most conventional method, while it is applicable only to electron rich acetylenes to obtain satisfactory yields (1,2). The hydration of simple alkynes usually requires another catalyst (co-catalyst), typically a mercury(II) salt (3), which is inconsistent with the guiding principle of Green Chemistry (4).

Tables 1-5 give silver concentrations in various organs of some plant species at different localities. Table 6 and conclusions provide guidelines for exploring for silver using biogeochemistry.IntroductionBiogeochemistry has been shown to be a useful tool in the search for gold deposits, especially those of the disseminated type (Warren and Barakso 1982). A laboratory test has been developed for assessing the patential hazard from self-heating of sulphides. The technique consists in measuring the rate of self-heating, from near ambient temperature, of a 1-kg sample in an insulated chamber controlled at standard atmospheric conditions. The rate of oxygen consumption is monitored simultaneously. The paper describes the apparatus and test procedure, and reports data on various ores and mill products. Tailings known to have caused problems underground when used as backfill have shown heating rates of over 3°C/h. A preliminary hazard rating guide for backfill based on the known behaviour of several sulphide materials is presented.

"Spiral concentrators are used to upgrade ore based on the density difference between their component minerals. This simple flowing film gravity separator is of interest for the processing of large amounts of material, as found in the iron ore industry. Addition of wash water at different points on the trough of the spiral affects the grade and recovery of the valuable concentrate by affecting the flow of particles within the thin slurry film. This paper shows how radiolabelled hematite (-355+300 µm) and quartz (–1,180+1,000 µm) tracers were used to determine the particles’ behaviour within the slurry film with and without the addition of wash water. The results presented provide a detailed particle flow pattern around a wash water addition point and its effect on the trajectory and velocity of the particles. This information is of interest in building knowledge about spiral wash water injection parameters such as injection location, direction, flow rate and nozzle orifice type (affecting jet shape and velocity).INTRODUCTIONSpiral concentrators are density based separation devices. They are extensively used in the upgrading of iron ore, fine coal and minerals sands (sources of ilmenite, rutile, zircon and monazite) (Wills & Finch, 2016). A spiral unit is composed of a channel of specific profile formed as a helix of 3 to 7 turns around a central structural post. The feed pulp is composed of 15 to 45% solids with particle size from 75 µm to 3000 µm (Wills & Finch, 2016). Throughput of a single spiraling trough can be up to 8 ton per hour and multiple trough unit (up to four trough) can process up to 30 ton per hour for a footprint of around 0.7 m2 (Palmers & Vadeikis, 2010). They are low cost concentrators considering manufacturing of their trough via polymer reverse molding. The energy intensity of a spiral plan is notably small considering the throughput and is mostly related to pulp pumping and final concentrate dewatering."

Coal samples are sometimes taken from a wet spot in a mine, or from an open car or pile shortly after rain, and submitted for analysis in a dripping wet condition. Other samples are taken from a dry spot in the mine, or from an open car or pile after a period of dry weather. Comparison of the analyses obtained in the two cases would be absurd, although the samples might be of essentially the same coat apart from the surface moisture on the one. The analyst therefore attempts to reduce all samples to an equal basis by the operation known as air-drying. Air-drying is practised by the chemist for three reasons: (1) To make it possible to grind the coal to powder. (2) To bring the coal sample to a condition in which it will not change in weight rapidly whilst portions are being weighed out for analysis -in other words, to bring it into equilibrium with the air in the laboratory. (3) To determine the water-retaining power of the coal. Any kind of drying is satisfactory for (1); the coal should be dried more or less according to the humidity at the time in the laboratory for (2); whilst it should be always dried to the same extent for (3). In other words, no method can be satisfactory for both (2) and (3). In this paper the only question considered is (3) -that is, air-drying the coal under standard conditions so that strictly comparable results can be obtained for the water content of coals after air-drying. After a sample of wet coal is exposed, it loses moisture until it is in equilibrium with the air at the time: thus the coal will loose distinctly more water in air of 20 per cent relative humidity, for example, than it would in air of 80 per cent.

"A major Canadian chromite deposit at Bird River, Manitoba is one of the largest known chromite reserves in North America but it exhibits low chromium contents and low chromium to iron ratios. Commercial beneficiation techniques permit these ores to be upgraded to concentrations which, however, remain inferior to most other ores and concentrates used worldwide f or production of high-carbon ferrochromium. Analyses for reduction of low-grade concentrates by submerged-arc electrofurnace techniques predict chromium contents between 45.9% and 51% for a high-carbon ferrochromium alloy. Relatively high over-all chromium recoveries between 79.5% and 91. 1% can be achieved. Alloy compositions for Cr, Fe, C and Si are determined for various burdens with low-grade concentrates. Consumption data per ton contained chromium are obtained for electric power, coke, concentrate, quartzite and limestone. The data are compared with those of high-carbon ferrochromium producers in South Africa. Economic aspects are discussed and compared with a South African reference study.IntroductionThe present ferrochromium demand in the western world is estimated at approximately 1.7 Mt with a consumption of approximately 0.36 Mt in the U.S.III and 0.03 Mt in Canada'-', A low estimate of the installed production capacity for ferrochromium in the non -communist world is 2.4 Mt. This production capacity of ferrochromium by far exceeds the demand, which is also evident from the fact that no shortage in supply of ferrochromium to the world markets was encountered in the past. Supply-demand comparisons therefore suggest that in the foreseeable future no new chromite or chromium producers should enter the world markets unless superior chromites or superior technologies are successful in competing with existing producers. Neither one of these conditions exist presently in Ca nada or the U.S., although essentially no ferrochromium is produced and no chromite is mined in these countries at the present time."

"Ecstall Mining is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Texas Gulf Sulphur at Timmins, Ontario. The mill tonnage is 10,000 tons per day of two different ores, a copper zinc ore and a silver lead zinc ore, producing about 2400 tons of concentrates per day. These are as a copper concentrate, a high silver zinc concentrate, a low silver zinc concentrate and a silver-lead concentrate. For flotation recovery a very fine grind is required, about 80% minus 325 mesh and the concentrates produced are 40% minus 10 microns.The thickened concentrates are pumped to the filter floor for filtering and drying. The filtering and drying section is separated from the flotation section by a wall and is controlled from a dryer control room by one operator.Two operating panels are located in this control room. One contains stop-start controls for the thickeners, filter motors and vacuum pump motors, and stop-start controls for dryer feed conveyors and dryer product conveyors to concentrate load-out bins, as well as ammeters for conveyor drive motors. Dryer throughput is regulated by Merrick Type L weightometers located on the dryer discharge conveyors and recorded on tons per hour strip charts.The second panel contains the temperature strip charts, furnace drive ammeters, scrubber and exhaust gas controls, burner controls and panel alarms for the four dryers.Filtered concentrates are dried in Nichols-Herreshoff, multiple hearth, dryers consisting of nine hearths (zinc) and seven hearths (copper and lead). There are two dryers for handling zinc concentrates and one each for copper and lead concentrates. The dryers are heated by burning natural gas. Each zinc dryer handles 1,000 t.p.d. and the copper and lead dryers 750 t.p.d. each.Multiple hearth dryers are unusual in the base metal mining industry and the reasons for selecting them in preference to rotary dryers are as follows:1) The concentrates could only be filtered to 15 to 17 percent moisture. These sloppy filter cakes would be extremely difficult to handle in rotary dryers."

"Abstract-The Amalgamated Kirkland gold deposit is located at Kirkland Lake, Ontario, within the Archean Abitibi Greenstone belt of the Canadian Shield. It lies on a fault or "break", termed the Cyprus Break, which is a splay off a regional structure termed the Cyprus-Battle Mountain Break. The Cyprus Break merges with the Cyprus - Battle Mountain Break above the -250 m level, as it was not encountered in shallow drilling or surface exploration. These structures lie 1.5 km south of the 727 000 kg (23 million ounce) Kirkland Lake Main Break and 0.5 km north of the 872 000 kg (30 million ounce) Larder Lake Break.The deposit is hosted by alkalic Timiskaming Group volcanic and sedimentary rocks which are overthrust by older Larder Lake Group tholeiitic and komatiitic flows along the Larder Lake Break. Timiskaming syenitic intrusives, similar to the host rocks for the Kirkland Lake Main Break gold deposit, intrude both suites.The Amalgamated Kirkland deposit consists of lode-style gold mineralization which is mainly hosted by altered and pyritized Timiskaming trachytic volcanics which wedge out or thin at depth, between two sedimentary units. The intersection of the Cyprus - Battle Mountain and Cyprus Breaks, in conjunction with the westward plunge of the volcanic wedge, appears to control the westerly plunge of the Amalgamated Kirkland deposit at approximately 50º.Mineralization is characterized by blue-gray brecciated and "wormy" quartz-ankerite veins which contain up to 10% fine-grained pyrite and, in decreasing order of abundance, minor galena, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, molybdenite and visible gold. The sulfides and gold commonly occur along fractures and wallrock inclusions within the veins. Native gold occurs as fine pinpoints distributed in 1-mm to 5-mm size clusters of up to ten or more grains.The auriferous veins occur within a quartz-ankerite-sericite-pyrite alteration assemblage which is enveloped by a broader zone of ankerite-sericite±hematite±quartz-pyrite alteration up to 60 m wide. This latter assemblage overprints the regional greenschist-facies chlorite-calcite assemblage.The Amalgamated Kirkland property has had a long history of exploration activity beginning with the first discovery of mineralization in 1911 on the Hunton Shaft claim located in the northeast corner of the property. Since that time various prospecting, mapping, trenching, geophysical surveys and diamond drilling programs have concentrated on either carbonate zones along the Larder Lake Break or quartz veins along the northern side of the property in association with complex trachyte flows and syenite dikes.Battle Mountain Canada Inc. located the Cyprus - Battle Mountain Break through a prospecting, trenching and geophysical program in 1989. Drilling by Battle Mountain and Cyprus Canada under the surface showing, coupled with several revisions to the structural interpretation of the Cyprus - Battle Mountain and Cyprus Breaks, resulted in delineation of the Amalgamated Kirkland deposit. Location of an auriferous structure through basic surface exploration within 1 km of a world-class orebody demonstrates both the subtle nature of Archean gold deposits and the potential for finding new mineralization in heavily prospected camps."

"The Amalgamated Kirkland gold deposit is located at Kirkland Lake, Ontario, within the Archean Abitibi Greenstone belt of the Canadian Shield. It lies on a fault or “break”, termed the Cyprus Break, which is a splay off a regional structure termed the Cyprus-Battle Mountain Break. The Cyprus Break merges with the Cyprus – Battle Mountain Break above the -250 m level, as it was not encountered in shallow drilling or surface exploration. These structures lie 1.5 km south of the 727 000 kg (23 million ounce) Kirkland Lake Main Break and 0.5 km north of the 872 000 kg(30 million ounce) Larder Lake Break.The deposit is hosted by alkalic Timiskaming Group volcanic and sedimentary rocks which are overthrust by older Larder Lake Group tholeiitic and komatiitic fows along the Larder Lake Break. Timiskaming syenitic intrusives, similar to the host rocks for the Kirkland Lake Main Break gold deposit, intrude both suites.The Amalgamated Kirkland deposit consists of lode-style gold mineralization which is mainly hosted by altered and pyritized Timiskaming trachytic volcanics which wedge out or thin at depth, between two sedimentary units. "THE November issue of the Bulletin carried in it ""Origin of the New Bruns1viclc Gypsum Deposits"" by J. Olaf Sund. This paper was a digested account of a Master's thesis at the University of New Brunswick which was a very useful compendium of information of gyp-sum in New Brunswick. It was a warded the President' s Gold .Medal and the First Prize in the Graduates' Section of the Students' Essay Competition. The present writer presents his congratulations to the winner of the competition. At the same time he must comment on the use of certain terms and on certain conclusions presented in the paper.The term ""unconformable"" has been used in several places in the paper to describe the relationship of gypsum to anhydrite in various deposits in New Brunswick in a sense which is quite alien to the accepted meaning. It has long been known tl1at the gypsum at the surface or near the surface in deposits in the Atlantic Provinces has come from hydration of anhydrite by surface and ground waters. The gyp-sum must be looked upon then as an alteration or even a weathering product. It cannot in this sense be called ""unconformable"" and thus arguments using the word in the accepted sense are invalid."
