"Bentonite clay has been the most common binder for iron ore pellets. Although bentonite increases pellet strength and durability, it has several disadvantages. For example, its use increases the cost of pellets and decreases pellet purity due to its composition and the higher levels of flux required to meet basicity limits. Several new types of binders have been proposed to replace clay. The binders include starch, modified humic acid (MHA), and dispersants. These binders were used to pelletize a magnetite concentrate from the United States. Typical doses of each binder type were 0.05-0.1 % starch, 0.5-0.75 % MHA, and 0.05 % dispersant. At these doses, the pellets exceeded the minimum recommended values for wet drop, dry compression strength, and fired compression strength. Pellets made with the MHA and dispersants had the lowest abrasion rates of the new binders, and were comparable to pellets made with bentonite clay. In this paper, we compare the new binders, considering pellet quality and the advantages and disadvantages of each binder type.INTRODUCTIONIron ore pelletizers need binders in order to make good quality iron ore pellets. The typical binder is bentonite clay, an alumino-silicate material. Bentonite increases the ballability and strength of iron ore concentrates, but reduces pellet iron grade and reducibility. As high quality bentonites can be expensive to ship, low quality bentonites are often used at significantly higher doses – this reduces iron grade and reducibility even further. Thus, several new types of binders have been proposed to replace bentonite clay.In this paper, we present several new binders for iron ore pellets: starch and modified humic acid (MHA). These have been tested alone and in mixtures with dispersants, or else with bentonite clay. Starch, MHA and their mixtures are briefly described below."

FOLLOWING the experimental work of Denny, Robson, and Irwin, and the clinical investigation by Crombie and Blaisdell, an investigation of aluminium therapy was begun at Washington, Pa., which is situated in a very large industrial section of the State. Some of the men to be studied were from plants manufacturing silica brick, refractories used in steel and glass manufacturing, and semi-porcelain table-ware; others were workers in foundries, sand blasters, and men engaged in the quarrying of ganister rock. This group of workmen gave an opportunity to study the effects of aluminium on various types of silicosis which differed somewhat from that found in hard-rock miners. EXPOSURE In their occupations, the men studied were exposed to silica dust concentrations ranging from 17 to 97 per cent free silica. In the silica brick industries, the unfired product averages 96 per cent silica in the form of quartz, whereas the fired brick contains 50 to 62 per cent cristobalite plus 17 to 30 per cent tridymite, forms of silica that, on account of their higher solubility, are more toxic than quartz. The operational dust counts in the plants varied from 15 to 9,500 particles per c.c., and the median particle size from the aerial samples was 1.0 micron for the green product and 2.0 microns for the fired product. The length of exposure varied with the occupation as well as with the individual plant, but disabling silicosis could be produced in less than four years in certain exposures. The average time needed to produce radiological silicosis in those susceptible to this disease was eight years. Some of the men in our series of cases have been treated as long as fifteen years after exposure had ceased, and have improved under treatment.

"Commercial coal mining has been recorded in Nova Scotia since 1863 and during this period an estimated 60,000,000 short tons of mine discard containing 10 1030% coal has been accumulated, Approximately 70% of these dumps are in the Cape Breton region and most are owned by the Cape Breton Development Corporation (CBDC), formerly DEVCO.The explosion of oil produced energy costs which created an increase in thermal coal demand as well as the desire to rehabilitate abandoned mine dumps encouraged coal reclamation. CBDC was receptive to a proposal from the Selminco Joint Venture and encouraged the building of the Princess Recovery Plant (1980) and The Summit Plant (1982).The mine dump contains scrap, waste rocks, coal and substantial quantities of fine shale. The scrap and oversize are removed and the remaining material slurried with water to a density of 1.45. The slurry is cycloned to separate the saleable thermal coal from the rejects which are returned to designated areas of the dump for contouring and revegetation.BackgroundThe recorded coal production in Nova Scotia from 1863 to 1980 was 390,000,000 short tons. This extraction was associated with an estimated 60,000,000 short tons of discarded material. This mining discard and coal washing plant reject are located in numerous, varying sized dumps throughout the mining areas. Approximately 70% of these dumps are in the Sydney coal field region of Nova Scotia. The coal content of these dumps varies from 10 to 30% coal with an average of 18%.Energy CostsThe explosion o f energy costs in the mid-1970s greatly increased the sale price of thermal coal which made recovery of coal from some of the dumps economical. The environmental benefit of these operations will be the rehabilitation of the dumps upon cessation of the coal reclamation operation."

"A sample of flotation feed from Bakertalc Inc., High water, Quebec was subjected to flotation evaluation to improve the recovery of talc. A number of alternative frother/collectors and depressants as well as flotation parameters including pH, conditioning time, frother/collector concentration and pulp density were assessed. In addition, the possibility of using a size coarser than that currently employed for flotation (95% minus 50 um) was investigated.As far as possible, a laboratory duplication of the present circuit arrangement was folio wed so as to minimize the cost of any changes. The best results obtained were a concentrate analyzing 95.96% acid insol for a recovery of 65.98% after four stages of cleaning. With recirculation of cleaner tailings, the recovery would be higher.The possibility of using an alternative method, based on the natural ability of talc to float unaided by a frother/collector, was briefly explored with encouraging results.IntroductionBakertalc lnc ., located in the eastern townships at Highwater, Quebec, Is approximately 140 km east of Montreal near the Vermont, U.S. border. Originally called Baker Mining and Milling Co. Ltd., it has produced pulverized talc products since 1938(1 ), although records show that talc was mined in the area as early as 1871(2). Feed to the mill originally was obtained from local deposits, but since 1952 the van Reet mine near south Bolton, approximately 25 km from Highwater, has been the source of ore .In 1957 a Raymond high -side roller mill was installed which enabled production of a greater range of talc products and, in 1960, new crushing equipment and a dryer were added. Other additions to the mill were the introduction of wet magnetic separation, although this was later discontinued, and flotation to produce high-grade talc concentrates."

"In December 1991, the GRAHM (Groupe de Recherche sur Jes Applications de L'informatique a L'industrie Minerale), of Laval University started a KBAC (Knowledge Based Automatic Control) grinding project with Falconbridge Ltd. The project was shifted to the Kidd Creek concentrator in the summer of 1992, with the first phase involving the collection of data by GRAHM and Falconbridge personnel for the construction and tuning of a dynamic simulator. This grinding circuit dynamic simulator known as DYNAFRAG was used to assess various control strategies, with a PID-based strategy being selected for ease of installation on a Foxboro II A DCS.The ""B"" primary grinding circuit was chosen for the initial strategy development, which is one of three parallel divisions. The KBAC project was successfully completed in November 1994, with subsequent modifications being implemented by Kidd Creek staff.This paper summarizes, the current control strategy, the project costs, and the realized benefits. Some of the problems which were encountered with the initial installation, and the subsequent modifications are also dealt with in this paper.2.0 IntroductionIn the summer of 1992, the GRAHM of Laval University and Falconbridge Ltd. started a project to design a control strategy for the ""B"" grinding circuit at the Kidd Creek Division. Between 1992 and 1994 several papers have been written to describe the control objectives, the methodology followed, and some initial results (Flament, 1994A, 1994B). Since then, however, the control objectives changed, and several improvements were made to the circuit. In particular, maximizing tonnage was no longer a priority, a variable speed drive pump was installed on the cyclone feed, the ball mill power was lowered, and the geometry of the cyclones changed. As a consequence, the control strategy was revised. Table 1 summarizes the historical developments on the ""B"" division grinding control."

"This paper reviews tailings management at Highland Valley Copper, and outlines main features of its tailings storage facility enclosed between the H-H and L-L dams. Key management focusses are: energy efficiency, cost effectiveness, safety and integrity of the tailings impoundment, environmental protection, and reclamation after decommissioning. Main features of the tailings facility include: high international standards for seismic and flood design criteria, water management and water quality monitoring, operations and construction optimization, reclamation and decommissioning plan, and geotechnical challenges associated with the complex geology of the L-L tailings dam foundation.IntroductionHighland Valley Copper stores its tailings mainly in the Highland Valley tailings facility (ultimate capacity: 1.8 billion tonnes). Smaller tailings storage facilities were operated by predecessor companies: the Number One Pond, the Trojan Pond at Bethlehem and the Highmont Pond at the Highmont operation as well as backfilling the Heustis and Jersey lona Pits at Bethlehem. These areas are currently not in use, and are in the reclamation phase prior to decommissioning. This paper focusses on tailings management in the main facility. As indicated in Figure I, the facility includes three tailings dams: these are, going from east to west, the H-H, J-J and L-L Dam, named after the alignment alternatives in the initial feasibility studies. From 1970 to 1977 Canadian Bechtel Ltd. advised Highland Valley Copper's predecessor company Lornex, on tailings storage at the H-H and J-J Dams and on the L-L Dam. Since the completion of the L-L Starter Dam in 1977, Klohn Leonoff Ltd. has provided ongoing consultation and construction monitoring of the raising of the L-L and the H-H Dams. The J-J Dams is currently buried by deposited tailings. This paper reviews key tailings management focusses and main features of the tailings facility."

Belt conveyor design involves the evaluation of belt tensions, drive selection, pulley configuration and other technical issues. The conveyor belt tensions vary with conveyor layout, drive pulley configuration, belt selection, and idler selection. The decisions for the belt conveyor construction always take all technical, commercial and maintenance issues into consideration. A good conveyor design shall provide required operational features and at the same time be cost effective. The common issues for an engineer to face during belt conveyor design include: (1) Conveyor drive selection ? drive with fluid couplings or variable frequency drives; (2) Drive system configurations - single pulley large drives or dual pulley smaller drives, if intermediate tripper booster drives shall be applied, what power ratio should be adopted for a multi-drive conveyor; (3) Gear reducers ? shaft mount drives, right angle gear reducers or parallel gear reducers; (4) Drive pulley lagging - ceramic lagging or rubber lagging; If ceramic lagging, what type should be used. (5) Conveyor speed variation ? If conveyors run at variable speeds, faster speed/lower percentage loading or slower speed/higher percentage loading. In many cases the decision maker find themselves in a dilemma ? technical benefits vs. financial benefits, capital cost vs. operational cost, and capital and operational cost vs. maintenance effort. Although many conveyor design topics above have been discussed in numerous technical papers and design reference books, management executives and inexperienced engineers may be confused and feel lost. The consultation of people around them may lead to different opinions since experiences tend to vary, making the decision making process complicated. The purpose of this paper is to simplify these complicated issues and provide useful guidelines for belt conveyor design. This paper focuses more on providing simple and practical answers and solutions instead of discussing each topic academically and theoretically in depth.

"The structural relations of the ore deposits of the Staclacona mine are of considerable interest, for they not only illustrate the effect of a change in competence of the wall-rock, but also the effect of either the convergence together of two faults, or a change in the clip of a fault, or both of these factors, on ore deposition.The mine is in claim M.L. 1818 near the eastern end of Pelletier lake and lies about 2 miles south of the town of Rouyn. The Company was organized in 1926 to explore claims in Rouyn, Dufresnoy, and Beauchastel townships, but attention was directed mainly to those in Rouyn. Underground work began in 1928 with the sinking of the main shaft to a depth of 300 feet. Except for 1930 and 1931, the mine has been in operation continuously since that time. Production, which began in 1936, up to the end of 1946 has amounted to 1,381,422 tons of ore from which gold and silver having a total value of $7,861,860 were recovered. The average grade of the ore milled in 1946 was $6.68.GEOLOGYThe rocks in which the Stadacona ore deposits occur are mainly volcanics of the (Keewatin) Abitibi series intruded here and there by numerous dykes, sills, or masses of diorite. Single dykes of olivine diabase and lamprophyre are also present in the property and are intersected in the mine workings. The volcanic rocks are part of a wide belt of northward dipping lavas and pyroclastic rocks, having a thickness of over 16,000 feet, that extend from the east-west trending belt of Timiskaming sediments on the south northward to the Horne Creek fault and form the south limb of a large syncline. The volcanic rocks within the property consist of numerous, east-west trending, northward dipping flows of andesite and a few flows of rhyolite interbedded with rhyolite ruff and agglomerate. The angle of dip throughout most of the property is 60° to 80°N., but in the main cross-cut on the 850- and 975-foot levels stratification in rhyolite tuff was noted dipping 35°N. The tuff at this point lies above an intrusive mass of diorite and it is probable that the change in dip results from the way in which the tuff and agglomerate have been thrust aside by the intrusive."

"Three types of structures, the main shear zone, the north shear zone, and a series of hanging-wall fractures, contain all the orebodies so far discovered at the McKenzie Red Lake mine. Lenses and veins of quartz in these zones and fractures are the sources of the ore. The ore-bearing structures are unusual in that they are in a complex intrusive mass known as the McKenzie-Gold Eagle stock. They are believed to have been produced by compressive stresses from the south andsouthwest.The mine is on the northeast side of McKenzie island, in Dome township in the central part of the Red Lake area. The original discovery, the main shear zone, was made in 1928, about 3 years after the property was staked, by M. L. Bouzan who was in charge of prospecting and development work on the property. Subsequent diamond drilling and underground exploration led to the installation of a mill, which came into production early in 1935. The hanging-wall fractures were found branching out from the main shear zone during development work on the 350-foot level. The north shear zone was discovered in 1940.From 1935 when the mill began operation until the end of 1946 total production from the mine was approximately 269,349 oz. gold and 69,317 oz. silver, having a value of $9,679,739, recovered from 823,527 tons of ore.GENERAL GEOLOGYThe McKenzie-Gold Eagle stock has a total length of approximately 1 ½ miles and a width of about ½ mile. It was intruded into a complex synclinal fold in Timiskaming sediments. The sediments, which have been cut in only one place in the underground workings, are principally wellbedded greywackes. The stock is composed of large masses of diorite and granodiorite, a small mass of hornblende pyroxenite, and basic dykes of two ages. The diorite occurs as irregular masses in large measure surrounded by the granodiorite that it intrudes. It contains tabular crystals of andesine, having a maximum length of3/4 inch. The hornblende pyroxenite is an elongated lens or dyke in the diorite. The granodiorite masses occupy about two-thirds of the stock. Along its eastern side the main mass tends to become darker and more dioritic toward the diorite contact.Basic dykes of pre-vein and post-vein age are the youngest intrusive rocks at the mine."

"Rare earth elements (REEs) have a series of specific properties making them invaluable in products including lighting, electronics and magnetism. The elements have been used in many commercial products, for example, turbines, electric vehicles, batteries, lighting, computers, cell phones and lasers. Heavy REEs are attracting the interests of scientists from many countries, and these elements have become critical to develop high-tech materials. Ion-adsorbed rare earth deposits were first discovered in China. The minerals are also called weathered crust elution-deposited rare earths. The particular types of deposits are distributed throughout southern China. The ion-adsorbed deposits are rich in medium and heavy REEs, accounting for more than 80% of the world’s total medium and heavy REEs production. However, the separation of heavy REEs from ion-adsorbed deposit is difficult owing to their similar chemical properties. The conventional separating technologies have caused serious pollution. A novel extraction strategy has been developed in this laboratory and is presented herein.INTRODUCTIONThe unique properties of rare earth elements (REEs) render them important in high-strength magnets, lighting phosphors, polishing compounds, and ceramics. Especially for applications that take advantage of the f-orbital electrons, substitutions outside the REE family are often difficult to impossible (Nassar, Du, & Graedel, 2015). Extracting and separating individual elements from mined ore is not easy, requiring lengthy operations to separate them, and this results in high costs and adverse effects on the environment. The low concentration of REE in the earth’s crust makes economic exploitation difficult (de Boer & Lammertsma, 2013) and the sustainability of the REEs separation industry has aroused considerable attention (McLellan, Corder, Golev, & Ali, 2014). To eliminate protons and break the dimmers in organic phosphonic acids or carboxylic acids, the saponification of acidic extractants by acid-base neutralization reactions are widely used in industrial REEs separation (Sun, Luo, & Dai, 2012a). The saponification procedure contributes to increased extractability and selectivity of acidic extractants to a considerable extent. The common industrial saponification mechanisms and technological processes are shown in Figure 1 and include ammonium saponification (saponified by NH3·H2O), sodium saponification (saponified by NaOH), calcium saponification (saponified by Ca(OH)2), and magnesium saponification (saponified by MgO). These inevitably result in wastewaters containing NH4 +, Na+, Ca2+ or Mg2+ because of the cation-exchange extraction mechanisms (Xiao, Long, Huang, Feng, Cui, & Wang, 2013; Song, Fu, Wang, Liu, Zhou, & Li, 2014; Sun & Waters, 2014)."

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) for process optimization is expected to play an increasingly important role in the future of the mining industry. The objective of AI is to develop a data driven soft (virtual) sensor using historical data that can estimate unmeasurable characteristics of the process and provide appropriate recommendations during operation to optimize the process through continuous learning. The application of AI to a hydrometallurgical process was evaluated by Sherritt Technologies in coordination with NTWIST. Historical operating data obtained from the Ambatovy facility’s High Pressure Acid Leach (HPAL) circuit was used to develop models to predict autoclave discharge parameters based on operating conditions and ore mineralogy. The prediction models were developed in such a way to also allow the user to simulate and test different operating conditions. A second set of models (AI model) were developed based on the prediction models, economic data and operating constraints for a given process unit to identify optimal reagent and steam dosages across the HPAL circuit. The development of these models was significantly complex due to the dynamic and interactive nature of the HPAL process. Despite the complexity of the models, the models were able to predict, with accuracy, the relationship between ore composition, leach autoclaves retention time, acid addition and steam addition with metal extractions as well as levels of impurities in the autoclave discharge slurry. The study showed that AI has the potential to improve the overall operation of a facility through providing tools to assist with training, troubleshooting and process optimization. INTRODUCTION The Ambatovy project, located in Madagascar, is one of the world’s largest nickel and cobalt mining and processing operation, with a design capacity of 60.000 tonnes of nickel and 5,600 tonnes of cobalt per year (Collins et al., 2016). Commissioning and start-up of the Ambatovy mine and plant facilities were completed in 2012, with acid first introduced to the ore leach in March 2012. Commercial production (defined as 70% of design capacity) was achieved in January 2014 and the production level required to achieve financial completion (90% of design capacity for 90 days) was achieved in March 2015 (Valle et al., 2016). Figure 1 shows a simplified flowsheet of the hydrometallurgical pressure acid leach (PAL) process employed by Ambatovy.

The Tartan Lake deposit 12 km northeast of Flin Flon, Manitoba, was discovered in March of 1984 during the investigation of a VLF anomaly. The discovery hole intersected 16.83 metres averaging 21 gm Au/tonne. Since then, 99 holes, over 21,000 metres, have been drilled outlining 419,491 tonnes grading 11.79 gm Au/tonne in a di stinct group of mineralized lenses referred to as the Main Zone. Three other mineralized zones are known on the property but no reserves have been allowed for these, the South , East and Base Line zones. The Main Zone consists of seven parallel, east-west striking, quartz lenses. The lenses dip steeply to the north and plunge steeply west to northwest. Lens number l strikes for 160m and extends vertically to the 90m level. Within th is lens there is a 60m interval of low grade materi al. Lens number 2 is located about 5-l0m within the foo twall of Lens number I. Near surface this lens stri kes for 40m, at 200m level the strike length increases to 200 m. To date the deepest mineralization on Lens 2 has been intersected at a vert ical depth of 527m. Five smaller lenses are located in the foo twall of Lens 2 , containing gold va lues similar to the two main lenses but erratically distributed. The South Zone, located 100m south of the Main Zone, strikes east-west fo r l00m above the 100m level. The East Zone, found 230m east of the Main Zone, strikes fo r 80m and may possibly be an ex tension of the South Zone. The Base Line Zone is located 275m south of the Main Zone. Sporadic, but very significant gold intersections have been obta ined1n all three zones. Gold-bearing quartz-ca rbonate tourmaline veins are generally confined to a silicous crystal tu ff hori zon. The crystal tuff exhi bits fi ve distinct types of alteration: silicification, sericitization, ca rbonati zation, chlorit ization and pyritization. Silicification has resulted in a perasive addition of silica and the generation of multiple quartz veins. Sericiti zation is restricted to the crystal tuff. All rock units are pervasively carbonatized . Ankerite is abundant in the quartz veins and within the shear zones, particul arly those located along the chilled margin of a nearby gabbro-diorite intrusion. Chloritization is widely spread th roughout the rock units, while pyritization fo rms a broad alteration halo associated with the orebody. Sulphide accesso ry minerals associated with the gold , whi ch fo r the most part appears to be free, are chalcopyrite and pyrite. Generally, the higher grade gold values are related to an increased content of sulphides in the qua rtz veins. The average sulphide content in the deposit is less than 5 %.

Life span of aluminum smelting electrolysis cells can reach up to 3000 days. During this period, cathode blocks go under various physical and chemical changes that could result in an increase of electrical resistivity. The increase may be due to carbon migration from the cast iron to the steel bars, gap evolution between the cathode block and the cast iron, cathode cracking, etc. This paper focuses however only on the collector steel bar electrical resistivity evolution. To reveal the main phenomena responsible for the electrical resistivity increase, chemical analysis, metallographic and electrical resistivity tests were conducted on two steels bars picked from two Hall-Héroult cells after autopsies. Cathode voltage drop and temperature were measured using electrically insulated internal probes and thermocouples on 16 samples from each steel bar. Electrical resistivity can reach up to 1.21µO-m for a steel bar aged 2505 days compare to 0.142µO-m for steel AISI 1008 at room temperature.

A new burner rig for cyclic and hot corrosion testing of Ni-base superalloys and high-temperature coatings has been developed at the National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS) in Japan. The concepts of the rig design include: use of kerosene as fuel, easy operation for materials research and multi-specimen testing capability per test run. The burner rig consists of six blocks including combustion block, corrosion-solution injection block, furnace block, specimen block, controller block and outdoor facility block. During verification testing, it was confirmed that the rig had accurate specimen temperature control within ±1? from 600 to 1100? and automated easy operation. Cyclic testing of several Ni-base superalloys was conducted. The results from 50 cycle testing indicated that a new NIMS alloy developed for 1700? class gas turbine had higher oxidation resistance than CMSX-4. This new burner rig testing capability at NIMS can be very useful for future oxidation, hot corrosion and coating durability studies.

An open-pit mine, located in Mexico, processes an ore a rate of 4000 tpd, using conventional cyanidation and AYR. A laboratory study was conducted to increase silver extraction and to reduce the concentration of cyanide in leaching. The sample contained 0.41 g/t Au, 125 g/t Ag, 99% gangue minerals, 0.7% pyrite, 0.07% sphalerite, 0.03% chalcocite. Silver was present as acanthite, stromeyerite, silver mercury/halogen, silver with copper in solid solution and jalpaite. The plant conditions (2400 ppm NaCN) produced 90.2% gold extraction (residue at 0.04 g/t Au) and 92.7% silver extraction (leach residue at 9.1 g/t Ag). The CELP (CANMET Enhanced Leaching Process) produced 97.0% silver extraction (residue at 3.8 g/t) and 90.2% gold extraction using 500 ppm NaCN. The incremental gross revenue was estimated at $US7.6 million and the reduction of cyanide costs was $2.9 million per year (79%).

Antimony and bismuth in copper electrorefining electrolytes can cause cathode contamination, leading to the careful control of their concentrations. This study examined the laboratory scale removal of bismuth and antimony from an electrorefining electrolyte using a solvent extraction mini-pilot plant. The ability of a proprietary phosphonic acid ester extractant (REX-2) in a commercial diluent was studied in a simulated commercial setting. Antimony and bismuth were both extracted effectively from the electrolyte (72% Bi and 70% Sb removed) and Bi was effectively stripped (92% Bi recovered) with 400 g/L sulfuric acid. A final strip solution was obtained from the SX circuit containing 0.36 g/L Bi, 0.043 g/L Sb, 1.3 g/L Cu, and 0.18 g/L As. Unfortunately, most of the extracted Sb remained in the organic phase. Following the pilot study, experiments were performed to examine the precipitation of bismuth from the aqueous strip phase and the removal of antimony loaded on to REX-2. INTRODUCTION For many years, antimony and bismuth have been some of the most problematic impurities in copper electrorefining (ER) (Bardwell & Lapee, 1933). Along with surface roughening, high concentrations of Sb and Bi can contaminate the copper cathode and precipitate at the copper grain boundaries. This drastically reduces the drawing ability of the metal (Bender & Emmerich, 2016). For these reasons, it is necessary to control Sb and Bi concentration in the cathode, which is done by controlling their concentration in the electrolyte. Conventionally, Sb and Bi concentrations are controlled by maintaining a proper As/(Sb+Bi) molar ratio in the anode and arsenic concentration in the electrolyte. Antimony and bismuth are removed during electrolyte purification using liberators (electrowinning cells) and/or ion exchange. Liberators treat an electrolyte bleed stream from the ER circuit and electrodeposit increasingly impure copper as the copper concentration of the solution decreases. Traditionally, first stage liberators reduce the copper concentration from ~45 g/L to ~15 g/L and produce saleable copper. Second stage liberators decrease the copper concentration to ~8 g/L (Biswas & Davenport, 1980) which results in contaminated cathode that is returned to anode production (Biswas & Davenport, 1980; Wang, 2004). Further electrolyte purification is not always required but third stage liberators can be used to reduce copper concentration below 2 g/L which results in significant removal of As, Sb and Bi and very impure deposits which are recycled to a smelter or used for As production. However, liberators do not have very high energy efficiency (Acharya, 2014; Ando & Tsuchida, 1997) and below 0.5 g/L copper, highly toxic arsine gas may form (Biswas & Davenport, 1980).

THE subject of taxes appears to engage our attention altogether too lightly. At least it would seem that, notwithstanding the increase in the cost of government, and its concomitant increased taxation, little constructive work is being done with a view to solving the problem of increased taxes. I believe that the inattention of the public generally to the subject of increased taxation is due largely to the fact that shareholders are not advised of the amount of taxes paid by industry. Were companies to advise their shareholders the amount of monies paid or payable out of each year's earnings for taxes in one form or another, and were such amounts compared with the amounts available for distribution to shareholders, the effect would be a general demand for more equitable taxation methods. While I am not unmindful of the burdens and inequities in taxation confronting industry generally, I believe that the mining industry in this Province does not fully appreciate the burden represented by the costs of taxation. My reason for this belief is based partly upon1the fact that no serious effort has so far been made to devise some means By which the mining industry in British Columbia might protect itself against the ever-increasing burden of taxation. In addition to this fact the widely diverse nature of mining in British Columbia makes the accumulation of comparable data a problem which, so far as I can ascertain, has never been attempted in a manner which would be authoritative. It should not be necessary to cite the effects of this burden upon any one mining company or upon any branch of the mining industry, such as coal mining, placer mining, base-metal mining, or the precious-metal mines. In my opinion, the operation of our mines by large corporations is conducive to the payment of taxes with much less protest than would be the case were the taxes being taken out of the earnings of just a few partners or a very few shareholders. We appear to be too unmindful of the taxes, paid by mining companies, of a kind that are not so prominently brought to our attention as are the taxes which are calculated upon the taxable income of the company at the end of its fiscal year. British Columbian mining companies pay many other taxes besides those which are calculated upon taxable income. Among these are school taxes, property taxes, gasoline taxes, mineral taxes, coal royalty, to say nothing of fuel-oil tax, sales tax, and excise taxes.

"The removal of iron asgoethite from the high iron bearing solutions generated in zinc hydrometallurgy using a strong airflow device was investigated. The influence of oxygen flow, copper ion concentration, temperature and reaction time on iron precipitation as goethite was studied. The optimum conditions were: oxygen flow 0.2-0.35m3/h, copper ion concentration 0.25-0.5g/L, temperature 80-90oC, zinc oxide powder neutralizing agent and a reaction time of5to 7hours. Under the optimal conditions, the Fe2+concentration was reduced to 0.025g/L after iron precipitation, and the goethite residue contained 38.7wt.%Fe. The SEM and XRD analyses showed that the iron was present as well formed FeOOH crystals in the iron residue, and the amount of iron sulphate was very low. Production practice shows that, when the average iron concentration in the feed solution was 11.61g/L and 4.08g/L after precipitation, the weight of iron removed was 1,439kg/day. When the average iron concentration in the feed solution was 14.51g/L and 2.73g/L after precipitation, the weight of iron removed was 2,454kg/day. This represents a ~70 percent increase in iron removal.INTRODUCTIONThe objective of iron removal is to produce a small volume of iron residue, and our industrial goethite process meets this requirement. The high Fe(II) solution in our reactor isoxidized/hydrolyzed to precipitate goethite and the precipitate is sent to a pyro metallurgical furnace for final residue treatment. Some literature discusses (DengYong-guiet al., 2008;Meiguang-guiet al., 2001;Zhongzhu-qianet al., 1980) research on iron hydrolysis; one of the reported rate limiting parameters was the low availability of the oxidant when using air and another was the inhomogeneous air distribution. There are two iron hydrolysis-goethite precipitation methods; the Electrolytic Zinc process (EZ) and the Vieille Montagne process (VM) (Lei Xiang, 2006; Xuguo-qiang, 2007;ZhaoYonget al.,2005). The EZ method hydrolyzes the Fe3+directly to FeOOH. The weakness of the EZ process is the low recovery rate of the associated minor metals. The VM method reduces the iron to the ferrous state and then oxidizes the Fe(II)to Fe(III),with simultaneous hydrolysis/precipitation of the Fe(III) as FeOOH. Before iron hydrolysis, the minor metals, such as indium, could be selectively precipitated, because Fe(II)requires a high pH for hydrolysis. Sedimentary phosphate-bearing rocks are found over a considerable area of so utheastern British Columbia that extends from Fernie east to the Alberta-British Columbia boundary and from the International Boundary northward to the headwatei: s of the Elk River. Phosphatic beds occur at the following four stratigraphic levels: 1. lower part of the Banff-Exshaw sequence of Mississippian age; 2. lshbel Formation of Permian age; 3. base of the Fernie Group of Jurassic age; 4. belemnite bed within the Rock Creek Member of the lower part of the Fernie Group. To date, considerable tonnages of phosphate rock have been proven in the area. However, no commercial production has been initiated because of a relatively low P2O5 grade. Data on assays and thicknesses of the phosphatic beds are in part recalculated from the paper by Telfer (I 933) and in part from assessment reports filed at the British Columbia Ministry of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources.

This paper presents an evaluation of underground-to-surface haulage options for a relatively large deposit. Specifically, it presents a recommended haulage option to provide the greatest value to the Project. Options considered included conventional truck, trolley-truck, conveying and shaft hoisting. The work was done at the level of a preliminary assessment as input to an internal pre-feasibility study. The Base Case for the analysis in this study was a Long Hole Open Stoping option (LHOS) using conventional truck haulage. Two scenarios were considered for the evaluation and included: 1. The current resource to ~700 m depth. 2. An expanded resource to ~825 m depth. The haulage options evaluated included three trucking options, three conveyor options and two shaft options. The paper presents the results from evaluating these options within the two mining scenarios using a Discounted Project Cost (DPC) comparison. Recommendations are made for the options that will provide the greatest overall value to the project.
