"Canada became the world's largest uranium producer in 1984. That leadership position is likely to be maintained for many years into the future because of a firm production base, many undeveloped known deposits with commercial promise, and a large geologicalpotential for new discoveries.There are some uncertainties on the horizon, principally because of restrictive actions in process within the U.S.A., which are aimed at preserving a deteriorating domestic uranium industry. Should such actions result in import restrictions, for example, there would be a negative effect on foreign producers at least in the short term. Canada may avoid such difficulties under a tentative U.S.-Canada free-trade agreement where restrictions on the import of Canadian uranium into the United States would be eliminated. Over the longer term, demand for Canada's uranium resources will grow because of the foreseen growth in the world's installed nuclear power capacity. IntroductionSince the phenomenon of nuclear fission was discovered in 1938, the utilization of uranium has grown substantially. Initially, the principal use for uranium was in the production of nuclear weapons. However, once civilian nuclear power reactors began to be built in the 1950s, an increasing fraction of uranium output was directed to the production of fuel elements for use in electricity generating stations.The cumulative uranium production by those countries in the World Outside Centrally-Planned-Economies Areas, WOCA, during the period 1938 to 1985 exceeded 800 000 tonnes of uranium. Some 60% of that was mined in the United States and Canada, as indicated in Figure 1. In 1986, nearly 80% of WOCA output came from five countries, Canada, United States, South Africa, Australia, and Namibia, as indicated in Table 1 and illustrated in Figure 2.During the past decade the world annual consumption of nuclear energy has more than tripled (Fig. 3). As of December 31, 1986, the world total of nuclear power reactors had reached 394 with a total net capacity of 270 GWe. The thermal output from nuclear power plants in 1985 exceeded 60% of the energy contained in all of the oil produced that year in the Middle East. Thus, nuclear power has already become an important component in the world energy supply picture."

"Due to the high reactivity of sulfide minerals in alkaline cyanide solutions, some parasitic reactions inflict a heavy gold surface passivation and excess cyanide consumption resulting in a dramatic decrease of the gold leaching rate. Atmospheric pre-oxidation was shown to be an effective tool to enhance gold extraction by preventing a passive film from forming on the surface of gold grains. This work aims to highlight efforts undertaken to determine: (1) how gold cyanidation is limited by passivation; (2) what are the reactions and mechanisms involved during gold cyanidation; and (3) how a better understanding of fundamental issues can be used to design a proper pre-oxidation strategy. INTRODUCTION Precious metals (PM), gold in particular, naturally occur in contact within a wide range of sulfide mineral systems. Hence, one of today’s most challenging R&D tasks consists in accounting for the presence of sulfides on the cyanidation behavior of gold. An important body of knowledge reveals that metal sulfides display a range of reactivities in alkaline cyanide solutions (Marsden & House, 2006). Such reactivities are acknowledged to inflict additional utility costs and loss of profits because they are accompanied with higher consumption of cyanide and/or formation of undesirable by-products that are often detrimental to gold leaching rates. Gold recovery in cyanidation is hampered by a multitude of factors, among others: (1) consumption of excess cyanide as a result of the formation of thiocyanate and dissolution of transition (Cu, Fe, Zn, etc.) metals (Habashi, 1967); (2) gold surface passivation by solid reaction products, e.g., Fe(OH)3 (Guo, Deschenes, Pratt, Fulton & Lastra, 2005), sulfur (Dai & Jeffrey, 2006; Jeffrey & Breuer, 2000;) or oxo and thiooxo (SbO33- SbS33-) salts in alkaline solutions (Guo et al., 2005). Because of their energy structure, most of the sulfide minerals exhibit semiconductor properties (Marsden & House, 2006). Therefore, the contact between constitutive sulfide minerals inside complex sulfurous ores entrains electrochemical phenomena in which sulfide dissolution is a genuine corrosion process (Azizi, Petre, Olsen & Larachi, 2010). For instance, galvanic interactions could be initiated between the various constituents within the ore and could substantially increase or decrease the reactivity of some of the associated minerals."

"This paper describes novel methods to enhance the flow dynamics of a mechanical flotation cell that can be applied to an existing installation. There are several reasons to alter the flow dynamics. The most common motivation is to improve the metallurgical performance of the cell, for instance, to improve the flotation recovery in particle size ranges that are normally difficult to recover.The flow dynamics enhancements are associated with the geometry of the rotor-stator area and additional features in the tank. The rotor-stator area has been modified to provide more concentrated turbulent kinetic energy or respectively more pumping efficiency with less attrition to the slurry. The tank can be fitted with various geometrical features, aimed to create a desired particle suspension profile. Depending on the targeted particle size range and application, badly selected or designed features can also have a negative effect on the metallurgical results.Besides new flotation equipment, the enhancements can be applied to existing flotation cell installations, thus enabling improvements in the mixing profiles, solids suspension, tank sanding and metallurgical performance of operating flotation circuits. Results of several tests carried out in existing plant operations are presented, concerning both flow variables and metallurgy.The common factor to above-mentioned enhancements is the use of modern computational fluid dynamics tools in the design phase, as well as the validation of the obtained CFD results in laboratory and production scale. Validated variables include mixing profile, power draw and local air hold-up.The paper demonstrates the effects of various flow geometries on the mixing profiles and metallurgical results of existing mechanical flotation cells. It shows how modern computational fluid dynamics analysis can be used to screen and select different approaches before carrying out costly trial-and-error experiments in plant scale."

"The Glencore Raglan mine Concentrator, located in Quebec’s Nunavik region, has been in operation since 1997. The nickel metallurgical plant was originally designed to process 100 tonnes per hour of ore to produce 130 000 tonnes of nickel concentrate per year at 16% Ni. The increased grinding capacity and the discovery of rich ore bodies have increased the annual production to more than 190 000 tonnes of concentrate at 19% Ni. In 2014, the Metallurgical group, with support from BBA, implemented an expert control system on the flotation circuit. This project was initiated to cope with the high variability of the concentrator’s feed. Increasing the plant recovery and final concentrate grade were also important project objectives. The implementation of the expert system ensures better control of concentrate inventory while maintaining maximum plant throughput. This paper describes the successful implementation of the new control system, the control technology selection and the flotation circuit optimization. It will also discuss the performances obtained with this new approach and the improved process stability.IntroductionThe Raglan Mine is located in Northern Quebec along the 62th parallel. It has been in operation since 1997 and was originally designed to produce 130 000 tonnes of concentrate annually at 16% Ni. The increasing of the grinding capacity and the discovery of rich ore bodies have increased the annual production to more than 190 000 tonnes of concentrate between 18 and 20% Ni."

Aggressive driving patterns, rough and poorly maintained roads and pit floors, along with the occasional bump and poorly placed load from a shovel can create intense and sometimes serious vibration levels on a heavy hauler. The effects of high vibration have been shown to be of concern for the health of the operator as well as the reliability of the equipment. It is proposed that an onboard vibration warning system based on the ISO 2631-1 standard could be used to help operators reduce the vibration levels experienced in a heavy hauler. The onboard system would consist of a screen that displays the instantaneous vibration in the form of three lights: green (safe zone), yellow (cautious zone), and red (danger zone), as well as an overall vibration exposure or dose for the entire shift. With the utilization of the warning system, it is anticipated that the overall vibration levels will be decreased resulting in improved operator health, a reduction of vibration-induced maintenance, and improved haul roads through reduced impact loading and repair for localized trouble areas.

The current version of the JORC Code was issued in 2004 and since that date the Australian Securities Exchange, in collaboration with JORC, has issued a number of companies? updates to provide guidance on various reporting issues. An interim review will be undertaken during 2010 to meld these updates with the current 2004 Code. This will be followed by a full review during 2010/11 covering all aspects of the Code and focusing particular attention on: ? clauses / guidelines relating to Exploration Results1, exploration targets and the reporting of historical estimates; ? issues relating to the Public Report2, including definition, the requirements for Competent Person sign-off, level of disclosure and mandatory requirements; ? guidance on techniques to quantify resource / reserve estimation uncertainty; ? the level of study required to convert Mineral Resources to Ore Reserves, and disclosure of prices and economic factors; ? expansion of the requirements for reporting of marketable material for bulk commodities; ? the use of language and tone that anticipates new and emerging technologies and techniques for the qualitative and quantitative measurements of data; and ? linkages to valuation and the valuation code (The VALMIN Code). Although the Canadian and Australian reporting regimes for public statements on Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Mineral (Ore) Reserves are similar in intent and coverage, they differ in detail, sometimes substantially. Canadian requirements are generally more wide-ranging and prescriptive than Australian requirements, including in the need in many situations to publicly lodge a Technical Report, a requirement that does not exist in Australia. Australian-listed companies seeking to list in Canada, and Competent Persons seeking to act as Qualified Persons in Canada, need to ensure that they are fully conversant with Canadian regulations and how they differ from those in Australia.

"The SART Process was introduced to the gold mining industry in the late 1990s and several commercial plants were built over the following 10 to 15 years. Most of these plants have operated well and enjoyed plant performance in line with expectations based on the underlying chemistry of the process. However, two of the plants have consistently suffered from high reagent consumption and poor product quality, which has motivated a re-examination of the process fundamentals in the hope of understanding the reasons for poor performance when it occurs, and developing mitigating strategies.This testwork along with a review of the relevant literature has demonstrated that the amount of sulphide added to the primary reactor, relative to the copper concentration, is the most critical parameter dictating plant performance, with pH and residence time important secondary factors. The primary product in the SART Process is synthetic chalcocite, Cu2S, and the stoichiometric requirement for sulphide addition is therefore 0.5 moles per mole of copper in solution. Testwork shows that when sulphide is added in excess of this amount (generally with the express purpose of lowering residual copper in solution) it not only fails in its intended purpose, but can have a negative impact on the settling and filtration characteristics of the copper sulphide product, as well as the final product quality. Moreover, these problems are exacerbated the higher the selected operating pH in the pH 3 to 5 range, and the longer the residence time of slurry in this pH range.Freshly precipitated copper sulphide compounds are known to be very fine and slimy, with poor settling and filtration characteristics. It is therefore important to engineer the SART Process in such a way as to encourage growth in the average particle size of the precipitate crystals. This was the rationale for recycling a portion of the thickener underflow to the primary reactor when the SART Process was developed. The theory of crystallization predicts that compounds of extremely low solubility, such as chalcocite (Cu2S: KSP = 10-48), are likely to experience growth in crystal particle size through aggregation rather than heterogeneous nucleation. On this basis, the SART practice of recycling a portion of thickener underflow to the primary reactor in the commercial plants is unlikely to lead to crystal growth via nucleation, and could in fact promote breakage of the aggregates that formed in the thickener. Recycling thickener underflow could therefore have the opposite of the desired outcome. The result of testwork that is reported here lends credence to this theory and questions the wisdom of recycling in the SART process.There is evidence to suggest that operating the copper sulphide thickener in the SART Process without flocculants may be beneficial. Thickener underflow densities could improve from the current 10 - 15% range to 40 - 50%. This will not only reduce the flowrate of slurry to the filter, but the filtration properties of the slurry (filtration rate, filter cake moisture content) will also improve. This is one of the most critical engineering and design aspects of the SART Process, and the achievement of high solids density in the thickener underflow will not only improve the health and safety aspects of the operation, but also has the potential to lower capital costs and improve the quality of the final product."

"The Laronde mill has been in operation since 1988. Actual milling rate ranges from 7,000 to 8,500 mtpd. Laronde uses SAG/ball mill grinding followed by copper and zinc flotation circuits. A cyanidation/Merrill-Crowe process recovers the remaining gold and silver in the flotation tails.In 1999, the carbon in pulp circuit was replaced by a Merrill-Crowe circuit in order to cope with a much higher ratio of silver/gold associated with the discovery of the Penna shaft. Marine type diatomaceous earth was used as filter aid in both clarifier pressure leaf filters and recessed pressure filter presses from 1999 to 2005. In 2005, this filter aid was gradually replaced by alpha-cellulose after several laboratory and plant filtration trials. The selected cellulose is considered to be much less sensitive to parameters such as pH and reagent concentration and have increased clarifier and filter press filtration performance. Also, since cellulose is exothermic, replacing diatomaceous earth with cellulose as filter aid in the filter presses has increased calcining and oxidation rates in the calcining ovens since cellulose is exothermic. Finally, better calcining conditions have resulted in energy and reagent savings at the arc furnaces.This paper describes how the filter aid replacement has contributed to increasing productivity and Net Smelter Return of the refinery while reducing worker’s hazards and operating cost.INTRODUCTIONAll Merrill-Crowe circuits in the world are operated with filter aids. For years, the market for precoat filter aid has been dominated by mineral filter aids such as diatomite and perlite. Flowsheet and equipment selection at the Laronde refinery were performed in the late nineties. At that time, some key parameters of the design criteria had clearly identified marine type diatomaceous earth (DE) as the most successful filter aid. Parameters such as reagent cost and availability, clarity of the filtrate solution and good historical filtration performance in other concentrators had designated DE as the best suited filter aid. Pregnant solution processed in the refinery from its start-up through 2001 was fairly stable in flow rate and reasonable in terms of impurity content (cationic and anionic compounds)."

"The development of Galfan, a new generation 95% zinc-5% aluminum-mischmetal alloy coating for steel, offers opportunities for greater fabrication flexibility and upgraded corrosion performance in automotive applications. The formability of Galfan is equivalent to that of electrogalvanized steel, based on laboratory tests and automotive component fabrication. Corrosion resistance of Galfan exceeds that of hot dip and electrogalvanized, including performance in automotive industry tests. Automotive production applications for deep drawn and stamped components in France and Germany are based on the ability to meet dual performance requirements for upgraded formability and corrosion resistance. The first U.S. Galfan application was on 1985 model Ford cars and light trucks for transmission oil cooler lines which has now expanded into a number of power steering tubing uses. IntroductionContinuing requirements for improved vehicle performance coupled with the ever present need for reduced cost have spawned the development of a number of new coated steel products. Among this new generation of coated steels is Gaifan™, a 95070 zinc-Solo aluminum-mischmetal hot dip alloy coating. Galfan exhibits particular promise for automotive use based on broad fabrication advantages and upgraded product performance(I ),The unique characteristic of Galfan is the key combination of greatly improved formability with much longer corrosion life. Galfan provides significantly better formability than any other hot dip coating. Testing shows that formability is limited primarily by the steel substrate to which the Galfan coating is applied. Galfan exhibits excellent resistance to flaking and microcracking during commercial forming operations. The result is the elimination of unnoticed damage to the coating which would show up later as premature rusting on the finished product."

"Optimizing the ball charge in a grinding mill may be needed to maximise throughput or alternatively, to achieve proper product size in more challenging situations. Efforts to optimise the ball charge however are essentially empirical and suffer from the lack of appropriate, accessible and reliable tools. To address these limitations, a new model-based technology was developed that relies on 3D Discrete Element Method and population balance techniques: it takes on the form of a simulator that aims to significantly decrease the time required to optimise the size distribution and the grinding media load within a ball mill. This paper summarizes the research work related to the development of this simulator. The calibration of the different constituting sub-models will be highlighted. The successful use of the simulator to predict the effect of ball make-up on the grinding product size distribution in one plant is also reported.INTRODUCTION Adjusting the characteristics of the grinding media charge in grinding mills holds significant potential for optimisation of mill performance. For example, properly adjusting the ball size distribution in a ball mill can help achieving specified targets for final product size distribution and/or throughput capacity. However, several problems appear when reviewing the process and the available tools to optimise ball mill load: • The current empirical simulation tools are lacking with regard to the ability to predict the performance of grinding when changes to mill ball make-up are made; • Generally, these tools estimate the top size of the charge so it is difficult to predict the effect of mixed ball make-up; • As the quality of prediction of these tools is low, the operators try to optimise the ball charge by a ""trial and error"" method and proceeding with conservative changes. The influence of these changes on grinding performance is often less than the measurement precision and the improvements then remain imperceptible; • A change in ball make-up may require an average of about 6 months waiting period before reaching the stationary state of mill ball load. This exercise is due to be costly if applied change decreases the mill performance. In its effort towards the comminution process optimisation, COREM R&D portfolio had addressed the herein described opportunity during the last five years This paper describes the technology already developed for the optimisation of ball charge. It takes on the form of a simulator that aims to predict the evolution of the grinding media load, the grinding energy available in the ball mill and the final product size distribution. The simulator was first validated in a pilot scale ball mill and then applied in an industrial case."

"Gondwana coal deposits are widespread and are known to occur in four continents. They are present in Brazil, India, South Africa, and Australia. From coal petrographic examinations and a detailed literature survey, it is interpreted that Gondwana coals are present also in Canada and the United States. Laurasia, or Northern Hemisphere, coals occur in the United States, Canada, and Europe. They form the main coal producing fields of the world. Megascopically, Gondwana coals have a uniform, micro-banded appearance, with a dull lustre; Laurasian coals are bright and have distinct bands of vitrain and clarain. Petrographically, Gondwana coals, compared to Laurasian coals, are lower in vitrinite, but higher in inertinite, particularly in semifusinite. Mineral matter averages 16% in Gondwana coals and 5.7% in Northern Hemisphere coals.Gondwana coals are characterized by thick seams that terminate through lithification (Versteinerung), whereby coal passes laterally into shale. Laurasian coal seams are thinner and terminate by splitting and digitation.Vitrinite/inertinite ratio data indicate deposition of the Gondwana coals in dry marshes under strong oxidizing conditions. The Laurasian coals originated in wet marshes in a reducing environment. As deduced from fossil plants and fossil spores, temperate and near arctic conditions apply for the Gondwana coals. A tropical and subtropical climate is indicated for the Laurasian deposits. The Gondwana coals were formed under allochthonous conditions. They derived from vegetation that drifted into the peat bogs. The Laurasian coals are autochthonous and originated from vegetation that grew and was buried in the peat bogs. The Gondwana coals are Late Carboniferous and Early Permian. The Laurasian coals are entirely Late Carboniferous."

The primary crusher is a key component in the comminution process applied in open pit mines. A collaborative research project between the University of British Columbia and Highland Valley Copper (HVC) was conducted aiming at understanding gyratory crusher liner wear in the overall context of the crushing process. This paper presents an analysis methodology applied to data collected using a laser-based tool for assessing wear in gyratory crushers. Data from the wear measurements was correlated with crusher production information such as current draw and throughput. As a result of the knowledge developed during this work, an innovative way to evaluate crusher liner profiles was created and new mantle profiles were designed. This led to a reformulation of HVC’s standard liner management policy with a resulting estimated annual savings of 13% in total crusher liner cost and a 15% reduction in liner replacement downtime.

La seule production de columbo-tantalite réalisée en Côte d?Ivoire est effectuée dans les éluvions et alluvions du gisement d?Issia, localisé au Centre- Ouest de la Côte d?Ivoire. Même si un lien direct avec les roches granitiques est suspecté, aucune attention particulière n?a été accordée à l?étude de la minéralisation primaire en relation avec l?évolution des granites et des pegmatites associées. Ces granites, qui sont en intrusion dans les roches sédimentaires du Protérozoïque inférieur, comprennent : le granite orienté à deux micas (Lobo), le granite orienté à muscovite dominante (Bitapia) et le granite porphyroïde non orienté à muscovite dominante (Issia). Les résultats de cette étude indiquent que les pegmatites à Nb-Ta-Be-Li sont liées au granite de type Issia. Les observations de terrain et les analyses sur roche totale des granites montrent que: (1) les trois principaux granites de la région sont de type- S et peralumineux dans leur composition, (2) ils ont été formés pendant la période tardi- à post-Éburnéenne, (3) le granite d?Issia fut le dernier à se mettre en place. Les pegmatites liées au granite d?Issia ont été classées en quatre types : Apegmatites stériles; B- pegmatites à Be; C- pegmatites zonées à Nb-Ta-Be; et Dpegmatites zonées à Be-Nb-Ta-Li. Les pegmatites zonées comprennent les zones suivantes: I- zone à aplite; II- zone graphique; III- zone à albite, microcline, béryl et columbo-tantalite; IV - zone à microcline massive; V- zone à quartz. Ces pegmatites présentent une zone d?altération métasomatique externe. La minéralisation de Ta, Nb et Be est liées à la zone III des pegmatites de types C et D, et celle de Li est associée aux greisens qui peuvent être observés n?importe où dans les pegmatites de type D. Les données de terrain et de laboratoire indiquent que le granite d?Issia est la roche parentale des pegmatites à éléments rares de la région. Les pegmatites minéralisées sont distribuées seulement autour du granite d?Issia et les patrons des terres rares des granites et ceux des pegmatites à éléments rares sont très similaires. Les analyses de la composition totale montrent un lien génétique entre le granite d?Issia et les pegmatites à éléments rares. Il est suggéré que les pegmatites ont été formées durant le transport et la cristallisation fractionnée du magma.

"Since Escondida began operations in fiscal 1991, a series of aggressive expansion projects have enabled market share to be increased and ever larger profits to be realized. This was possible due to the very large size of the ore body and its high grade - averaging 2.7% copper from startup through fiscal 1997. The situation has now changed: ore grade is falling rapidly and is projected to be only 1.55% by 2003. Since revenue is directly proportional to ore grade, while costs are proportional to quantity of ore processed, profits will begin to fall dramatically. The Phase IV Expansion Project is intended to forestall this drop in profits by increasing ore processing capacity by over 85%.The Phase IV concentrator is designed for a nominal capacity of 110,000 MTPD and the key to achieving this value is through the proper design of the grinding circuit. This paper presents the general design criteria for the grinding circuit, as well as a description of the facility.INTRODUCTIONThe Phase IV Expansion Project consists of a new copper concentrator located 8.5 km south of the existing operations, a new tailings disposal and water reclaim system, a new concentrate slurry pipeline to the coast, and added concentrate handling capacity at the port of Coloso. The new concentrator has a nominal capacity of 110,000 tonnes per day (MTPD), compared to the existing concentrator’s capacity of 127,500 MTPD. The Laguna Seca concentrator is based on using the largest and most efficient ore grinding mills now available.The concentrator has been designed for a 110,000 MTPD nominal capacity. The process design criteria for the Phase IV project were established from in-house operating information and from test work. Unlike a green field project, Escondida already had an operating plant and it processes ore from the same pit that feeds the Phase IV plant. "Exploration and development of mineral resources in developing countries by Canadian-based multinational mining companies is becoming increasingly common. One problem being encountered is that the objectives of the governments of developing countries can differ from those of developed countries. These objectives are not always consistent with maximizing returns from the projects, which can create conflicts between the mining company's responsibility to its shareholders and the desire to be a good corporate citizen. This article discusses how a mining tax regime can be designed to make the social goals of a government consistent with the economic goals of the company.IntroductionAt the recent International Seminar on Mining Taxation organized by CIM and the United Nations there was considerable discussion about the role of international mining companies operating in developing countries. Not surprisingly, given the diversity of backgrounds of individuals attending the Seminar, there were different opinions about what this role should be.Government PositionRepresentatives of governments pointed out the strong desires of their countries for technology, high-level technical training of their workforce, increased employment, and development of social infrastructure. They pointed out that, to a large extent, these objectives could be more efficiently met by mining companies operating in the country than by the governments themselves. For example, a multinational mining company (""MMC"") would have extensive knowledge of the various technologies available, and would have performed a detailed evaluation of the mineral resources before choosing the most cost-efficient technology for that project. They would, therefore be in an ideal position to assist the country in importing and developing such technology. Similarly, the company could provide opportunities for hands-on training, both at the technical and managerial levels, which would otherwise be unavailable to the government."

"A computerized cost estimating program developed with the use of the Lotus 1-2-3 spreadsheet program has produced dramatic savings in preparing estimates for operating costs, equipment fleet size and manpower requirements for underground mines.The program is used by Dynatec to support its consulting engineering projects, particularly feasibility studies. "The operators of mineral processing plants collect daily samples from strategic process streams with a view to prepare production balances to assess plant performances. The rules to minimize the risk of systematic sampling errors are known and applied in many mineral processing plants. The mass of the sample to be collected is calculated to yield a target measurement reproducibility considering the fundamental error associated to the sampling of heterogeneous material. This paper demonstrates that this practice is partly valid if one does not account for the time variation of the ore composition during the day. The concept is demonstrated using samples collected on a 30 minute basis from different streams of a gold ore concentrator. Results show that depending of the natural variability of the stream characteristics the mass of the daily samples may not be the critical variable to obtain reproducible measurements. On the other hand the number of cuts taken during the day could impact on the variance of the measurements obtained from daily samples.IntroductionMineral processing plants may treat several thousand tons of ore every day to produce concentrate or impure gold ingots. The operation and performances of these plants are monitored on a daily basis through the collection of ore samples from various streams of the processing circuit. The samples are prepared and assayed to obtain the concentrations of target elements that are subsequently used to calculate the mass flowrates in the streams of the circuit and ultimately the distribution of the target metals for the estimation of the plant performances (Morrison, 2009; Lachance and Leroux, 2016).The acquisition of representative and reproducible samples is therefore the first step in the characterization of plant performances. The term representative sample is used here to indicate an unbiased sample, i.e. a sampling procedure that does not introduce a systematic error. Rules for the collection of unbiased samples are reviewed in the literature by different authors (e.g. Morrison, 2009) and are not discussed in this paper. The term reproducible indicates the dispersion of the measurements around the average value of a characteristic of a stream meets an acceptable level of variance. The reproducibility of a measurement process (sampling and analysis) is assessed by the relative standard deviation or coefficient of variation of the measurement that is a function of the sampling and assaying errors (Morrison. 2009; Gy, 1979). Usually the focus is put on the fundamental error of sampling whose variance can be controlled by the choice of the primary sample mass or adequate particle size reduction during the preparation of secondary or tertiary samples extracted for the chemical analysis. When a sample is taken from a stream that exhibits a time varying characteristic, the obtained measurement exhibits a variability that is not only a function of the sample mass but also of the natural variability of the ore in the sampled stream. This paper examines this aspect of the sampling of a time varying process on the reproducibility of composite samples for a day of production."
