Checking Gold Content Experience has shown that in many cases error has been made because the true told content of a particular sample or deposit was not known. Often a collection of analytical data, which should reasonably be expected to follow the normal distribution, contains too many extreme values, which the experimenter is inclined to eliminate according to some arbitrary procedure. The stepwise computer procedure described for this purpose is similar to many other truncation procedures; however, because truncation of a basically normal distribution causes a downward bias in the estimated variance, this procedure provides a graphical method to compensate for the bias.

"Engineering design involves, in addition to numerical calculations, considerable amount of expertise and judgement. The expertise and judgement is required to conceptualize and idealize the problem, select a suitable mathematical model for the problem and to interpret the model results in terms of stipulated design constraints. In recent years, knowledge based systems (KBS) have provided the capability to integrate the qualitative experiential and expert knowledge with ~he quantitative knowledge for improved analysis and design of systems. A possible KBS architecture for mine ventilation system design was discussed by Ramani and Prasad · (1987). The expert system (ES) component of the KBS supports the analysis and interpretation phases of the ventilation design process with an algorithmic program used for the solution of alternate designs. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the data and knowledge needs for developing such a system and a formal means of their representation on the computer. A number of ES shells were evaluated to explore possible development and delivery environments for the system. A brief summary of this evaluation is also provided.INTRODUCTIONLuxbacher and Ramani (1979) have discussed the design process of mine ventilation systems and have provided the interrelationships that exist between ventilation, strata control, drainage and material handling systems and mining methods. They have also outlined the importance of correct analysis of the problem, choice of the right solution method and a rigorous interpretation of the solutions. The expertise required for analysis and interpretation phases was identified as the key element in developing effective and efficient ventilation system designs. Such expertise is embedded in the right choice of questions to be asked of the user as well as in directing the user to a wide array of alternative methods that may satisfy the design requirements. With advances in artificial intelligence applications in recent years, particularly expert systems, the integration of expertise into traditional mine planning and design algorithms has been facilitated. These planning and design aids, employing the integration of numeric and symbolic logic and called coupled systems, are powerful tools for engineers to tap the benefits of experts (Kitzmiller and Kowalik, 1985; Fenves, 1985). The purpose of this paper is to discuss the means of representing knowledge for the design of mine ventilation systems through the use of a coupled system. During the past few years the use of mechanical equipment for the loading and transportation of coal at the working face has rapidly increased . Many mining officials are of the opinion that mechanical methods have tended to reduce the hazards of mining, and a number of statements have been made to this effect . Little actual data upon which to base conclusions in regard to the relative safety of various methods of mining have been made available . While it may be possible that these systems of mechanical mining are inherently less hazardous , obvious dangers should not be disregarded in the belief that the mere act of installing mechanical loading equipment automatically brings about better accident records . The same rules and regulations , modified to meet the new regime must be applied with the same discipline as heretofore . By diligent study and application there is reason to believe that new methods of concentrated mining can be utilized with at least a possibility of increased accident performance . With the idea of preventing accidents by taking available precautions against their occurrence , attention should be directed to the dangers that exist where room and face conveyors are in operation . Due to the cost pressure prevalent in the mining industry at the present time mechanical means are often used in an attempt to decrease cost of production. The management , after having spent considerable sums of money for new equipment , is expected by stockholders and investors to show results by increasing tonnage and reducing operating costs . Consequently the operating officials apply the same pressure to local mine officials to obtain results . The natural reaction of the superintendent and mine foreman is to secure the maximum production from the new method , and unfortunately safety is frequently , if not generally , sacrificed to this end . In many instances , operators of new types of mechanical loaders are difficult to secure and after being obtained are difficult to hold , especially if the new equipment is more or less in the experimental stage . The tendency is to handle the machine operators with " gloved hands " and to permit many unsafe practices which ordinarily would not be allowed, in order to keep from antagonizing them and losing their services . Although these unsafe practices become habitual and even uneconomical , conditions thus established are difficult , sometimes impossible , to change .

This book has employed miners' narratives to illustrate basic concepts about the escape process. One of the most powerful means by which people make sense of their experiences is through the telling and internalization of stories [Bruner 1990]. By couching one's own and others' motives and actions in terms of a coherent narrative, a person is able to learn from mistakes and plan future behaviors that may help ensure survival. A growing body of research suggests that decision-making skills used to deal with emergency situations can be taught and assessed by simulations based on narratives from the real world [Bransford et al. 1986; Brecke 1982; Brener 1984; Connolly et al. 1989; Halff et al. 1986; Jones and Keith 1983; Lacefield and Cole 1986]. Such techniques have been used to address the decision-making of medical personnel, civil and military flight crews, and even people involved in broader life events such as political and military situations [Babbott and Halter 1983; Dugdale et al. 1982; Farrand et al. 1982; Gilbert 1975; McGuire 1985; McGuire et al. 1976; Flathers et al. 1982; Giffin and Rockwell 1984; Jensen 1982; Janis and Mann 1987]. Given the validity of this method of study and the promise it holds for helping people improve the quality of their responses to nonroutine occurrences, it is perhaps surprising that there have been no studies of emergency decision-making among blue-collar workers prior to those conducted by the present authors and their colleagues. The purpose of this chapter is to describe underground coal miners' decision-making performance on a table-top simulation whose problem structure is derived from interviews with a group of eight miners who escaped from the 5 Left section at Brownfield Mine. The exercise was constructed by a panel of domain experts (mine safety and rescue personnel) with the assistance of an educational psychologist. The simulation includes actual predicaments with wise and unwise decision alternatives that, in the opinion of these domain experts, are characteristic of such escapes. Results reported in this chapter are the scores of a sample of experienced mine workers who completed the simulation. Because the exercise is a series of objective performance tasks coupled with detailed and immediate feedback, this simulation can be used to teach and refresh critical escape skills, as well as to provide data concerning the proficiency of miners at the time of exercise administration.

The approval of the U. S. Bureau of Mines when granted to a manufacturer for a gas mask is a certification that the particular device has been submitted to the Bureau of Mines for inspection and test and has been found to meet that bureau's published minimum requirements for safety , durability , and satisfactory performance . Any de- Gas masks are approved by the Bureau of Mines only as a complete unit or assembly of parts , as canister , facepiece and harness . This is in order that responsibility for rigid adherence to the bureau's requirements may be definitely located and not divided . vice marketed under this approval must be a unit composed of parts identical in detail of design , assembly , workmanship , and quality , and produced under the same control and inspection as the original device to which approval has been granted . The particular parts which comprise the approved assembly are designated in a letter to the manufacturer at the time the approval is granted . In recent years they are also specified in the approval plate authorized for use in connection with the sale of the device . Each part permitted in the assembly is legibly marked by name or number for the guidance of users of masks in ordering and identifying approved parts when making repairs , and thereby maintaining their equipment as an approved device . In view of the foregoing , any change in the design of parts or deviation from the permitted assembly of parts would violate the conditions under which approval was granted and the device would not be considered as meeting the approval requirements of the Bureau of Mines . The U. S. Bureau of Mines has been frequently requested to interpret the approval status of a gas mask assembled from parts which have separately met its requirements as components of two or more approved devices but which in the form of a complete unit has not been submitted for tests or been granted approval . Responsibility for the elements and for their proper assembly is in such case divided . Such assembled units have no status as permissible equipment under the Bureau of Mines system of schedules . The reasons underlying this policy are that the approval is granted only to some one who assumes responsibility for the whole and that the details of assembly and coordination of parts are considered to be important to the satisfactory performance and safety of the device .

In order to reduce fire hazards caused by spontaneous combustion in longwall gob areas, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) study is being conducted by National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to simulate the spontaneous heating of coal in longwall gob areas. A CFD model was first developed to model the spontaneous heating process in a two longwall panel district using a bleeder ventilation system with a stationary longwall face. The spontaneous heating is modeled as the low-temperature oxidation of coal in the gob using kinetic data obtained from previous laboratory-scale spontaneous combustion studies. Heat generated from coal oxidation is dissipated by convection and conduction, while oxygen and oxidation products are transported by convection and diffusion. CFD simulations were then conducted to model the spontaneous heating in longwall gob area with a bleederless ventilation system. A single longwall panel with a bleederless ventilation system was simulated. The effect of gob permeability on the spontaneous heating was also investigated.

"INTRODUCTION AND CONCLUSIONSThe first three reports of investigations 5/ in this series, pertaining to the investigation of stemming at the Mount Weather Testing Adit dealt with the dust produced by blasting, the effect of stemming on gases generated by blasting, and the relative advantages and disadvantages of different types of stemming and no stemming when used with 60-percent ammonia gelatin dynamite.This report covers an investigation of the length of stemming material through which a primer will fire and detonate a charge of dynamite, such as a missed hole.The practice of drilling a new hole a foot from a missed hole to blast out the missed hole should be prohibited. It is dangerous, as is evidenced by the number of miners killed through drilling into missed holes. It is even more hazardous in a mine on a multiple-shift basis, in which the same miners do not drill succeeding rounds."

Rivers in industrial and raining areas frequently are contaminated by material dumped into them causing the water to carry in suspension large amounts of silt, which subsequently is deposited alone; the banks and, ultimately on the agricultural lands if the water is used for irrigation purposes. Two common examples of this practice are the dumping of breaker refuse in the anthracite region of Pennsylvania and the dumping of tailings from the metallurgical mills in various metal-mining districts. Studies in stream pollution and its resultant problems are very important, and surveys are constantly being made by Federal and State agencies, as well as by private companies, to determine the quantity of solids actually being carried by these watercoarses. These studies require accurate sampling of the silt-carrying water to determine the amount of solids within reasonable limits. A device that will obtain reasonably accurate samples of material from silt-bearing streams is described in this circular.

In the interest of safety ii: coal mining, the Bureau of Mines recommends: That all active underground coal mines, whether working or idle, have one or more fans in continuous operation. The capacity and installation shall be such that the entire mine workings are adequately ventilated at all times. Main fairs shall be located on the surface in fireproof housing offset from the line of any mine opening. The housing shall be provided with ample pressure-relief doors or other devices easily opened by the force of an explosion. The installation shall permit prompt reversal of air flow. For mines that liberate gas, the fan shall have at least two independent sources of rower immediately applicable. Ventilation of underground workings in coal mines is needed whether or not explosive gas is present. Natural ventilation is unreliable and often uncontrollable. Main fans should be on the surface; if they are in the mine, fire or explosion may make access difficult or dangerous and render the installation inoperative.

The new MSHA diesel rules have stone mine operators looking hard at pos¬sible upgrades to their ventilation systems. There are existing methods to reduce diesel engine emissions (MSHA, 2001)(Head, 2001b),but many operators will decide that a ventilation upgrade is necessary is well. NIOSH hay several stone mine ventilation projects underway, but in the meantime a good information resource is the work done by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in the 70's and 80's on ventilation for oil shale mines. The Bureau conducted this research because oil shale mines were projected to be gassy and would, therefore, require a lot of ventilation air. The focus of this oil shale work was on the use of jet tans for lace area ventilation, and on stoppings that would he low Lost and leak-tight. The work also considered changes in mine design to reduce the number and size of stoppings. The findings are still applica¬ble to stone mines.

Untreated timber in a mine or elsewhere may fail prematurely because it may "rot out before it wears out." If such timber is treated with a satisfactory preservative, decay will be retarded for many years, and it's serviceable life will beg prolonged to several times that usually obtained from untreated timber.4/ Treated timber has many advantages, and although it has been used extensively by railroads and other large consumers of structural timber, the relatively small use in mines seems strange indeed. Timber does not decay if it is kept dry, cool, and well-ventilated or if it is kept constantly wet or sumberged in water. At a mine in Canada the temperature in the upper levels was only 44° F., and the timber did not decay. As operations deepened, however, warmer ground was opened, and, with high humidity, conditions favored timber decay. The life of untreated timber may be only 2 to 3 years under such conditions.

Fire is a major concern for those who work in underground mines. A mine fire can occur at anytime and often results in a partial or total evacuation of mine personnel and could result in the loss of lives. Therefore, having a workforce that is well trained to prevent, detect, and fight a fire is important. This paper focuses on responders’ preparedness for fire. Responders in this context are considered the entire workforce and are categorized as first, second, and sustained responders and evacuating miners. Quality training enhances ones awareness of mine fire hazards and promotes self-confidence in combating fires and responding to emergencies. Early warning systems and other escapeway aids such as a through-the-earth signaling and communication system, lasers and strobe lights are also addressed. The technological advancements that have been made can improve the state-of-preparedness for responders to underground emergencies and increase the chances of survival for escaping personnel.

The Bureau of Mines has developed and successfully tested a hangup clearance module for use in clearing hangups in underground mine chutes and ore passes. The Bureau's tests showed that the hangup clearance module can be effectively used to clear mine hangups. Furthermore, it is believed that clearance using this module is quicker, safer, and more efficient than the method currently used. The hangup clearance module uses a ballistic disk explosive charge that can clear hangups located as far as 50 feet (15.2 m) from the position where the charge is detonated. Mine personnel can therefore set up the module and the charge it contains without being exposed to dangerous areas. This report describes the principles of operation of the module, provides data and drawings for its construction, and gives instructions for its setup and use. The report also summarizes the development of the module, briefly discusses preliminary and underground tests, and lists the current and potential applications of the hangup clearance module to underground mining.

A survey of the literature on ELF and VLF atmospheric noise has been made. Most measurements have concentrated on the vertical electric field and the horizontal magnetic field rather than the vertical magnetic field which is of interest in transmission between horizontal loops. The limited vertical magnetic field data indicates that the vertical component is generally 10 to 20 dB below the horizontal component. Three laterally inhomogeneous earth models have been analyzed for conversion of horizontal to vertical magnetic field. The rough surface model examines surface effects, the inhomogeneous thin sheet model treats volume effects, and the buried cylinder model treats localized man-made effects. All three models predict the possibility of significant conversion from horizontal to vertical magnetic field. A thin sheet model has also been used to examine transmission from a buried magnetic dipole source. It is found that the pre- dicted fields more nearly model the measured data than does the homogeneous half-space model.

Improve the safety, reliability and overall effectiveness of mine stench warning systems and to provide a means of remote control stench injector operation. Approach Industrial gas odorants were analyzed for their suitability for use in mine stench warning systems. A prototype stench injector capable of precise flowrate control was designed, fabricated, and tested using the odorant chosen as having the most favorable properties. Based on the results of the field tests, a second generation injector was developed. The second generation unit features optional remote control operation, and in addition, is simpler to refill and is less expensive than the original injector. A complete second generation system, consisting of two manually operated injectors and one remote controlled injector was in-mine tested through actual mine fire drills. The transportation of any commodity which is actually or potentially a source of fire or explosion, has been made safe, insofar as humanly possible, by rigid requirements as to inspection mechanical safety devices, and by printed labels. For the most part these precautions have been sufficient. This is evident when it is considered that in the thousands of instances in which commodities with a great fire risk have been transported, few disasters have occurred. This paper deals with the recent gasoline explosion which occurred at Memphis, Tennessee. At 7:50 a.m. January 24, 1921, vapors from a tan: car of gasoline became ignited and resulted in a blast that killed eleven people and badly injured nineteen others. Probably forty or fifty men, women, and children received slight injuries from falling debris or from burns. The explosion wrecked an oil plant, leveled a block of frame buildings, and broke window panes within a radius of five blocks.

Use water-jet-assisted cut-ting technology to reduce the exposure of mi ne workers' to respirable dust. Approach Install water-jet-assist on mining machines and evaluate its impact on respirable dust. How It Works Water-jet-assisted cutting involves a mechanical cutting bit working in combination with a moderate pressure (generally up to 10,000 psi) water jet directed just in front of, or through, the bit tip. One of its advantages is reduced dust generation because the jet wets the face of the material being cut more efficiently than a conventional low-pressure water spray, thus capturing much of the dust before it ever becomes airborne. It also removes loose cuttings ahead of the bit before they are pulverized by the bit into respirable dust. Total water consumption is about the same as for conventional low pressure dust control water spray systems. However, there is some increase in power consumption because of the energy needed to provide the high pressure water.

Reduce dust generated during bagging at minerals processing facilities, such as silica sand operations. Approach Installation of a new type of bag nozzle system eliminates the major dust sources during the bag filling process. How It Works The drawing illustrates components of the new bag nozzle system. The system differs in several ways from the conventional nozzle system. An improved bag clamp reduces the amount of blow-back during bag filling, because it has direct contact with approximately 80 per-cent of the nozzle. A two nozzle arrangement includes an inner or "fill" nozzle surrounded by another nozzle, which is designed to exhaust excess pressure from the bag after it has been filled. The exhaust is powered by an eductor, which uses a venturi effect to exhaust the bag at approximately 50 cfm. The exhaust exits into a bucket elevator and is recycled. A pinch valve automatically opens and closes the exhaust system to the bag.
