The Joint Water Pollution Control Plant (JWPCP), operated by the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County (the Districts), treats wastewater generated by over3 million people and processes wastewater solids generated by over 5 million people. The JWPCP Tunnel and Ocean Outfall Project, if constructed, would be one of the major marine outfall projects in the world. The new tunnel and ocean outfall system would provide relief to the existing outfall and allow inspection, maintenance, and repair of the existing tunnel and outfall system, portions of which were constructed as early as the 1930s. Geologic conditions are challenging along the alignments within the study are a being considered. Conditions include saturated alluvial soils, weak sedimentary rock, mixed face conditions, and squeezing ground conditions. Other significant challenges include the potentials for encountering up to 11 bars of water pressure, crossing seismically active faults, and encountering gassy and contaminated ground conditions. This paper discusses the details of the proposed project and the associated challenges.

When a large area of open gob collapses suddenly, a windblast is produced that can cause considerable damage throughout the infrastructure of a mine. In a few cases, the windblast has been accompanied by ignitions of methane and/or coal dust. This paper describes the conduct and results of laboratory tests involving the compression of mixtures of air, methane and coal dust under a falling weight and while allowing controlled escape of the mixture. The transient responses on pressure and temperature sensors were recorded. In addition to an analysis of those records, the paper highlights those conditions in which ignitions occurred.

The economic advantages of large diameter ball mills can be compromised by unexpected capacity limiting conditions. These arise because media rotational flow to ore axial flow ratios, and the number of mill revolutions that ore is subjected to during residence, are both inversely proportional to mill diameter. Because of this, mixing efficiency and grinding kinetics may decrease and become capacity limiting when mill diameters reach a critical range. There are two possible scale-up problems involved in the design and use of mineral processing machinery: • Selecting the size and operating conditions for available larger equipment, to insure that operating results will match those obtained with smaller units; or •Extending the size ranges of equipment beyond existing limits. Previous research at Columbia University into flotation machine hydrodynamics has demonstrated the importance in scale-up of internal flow relationships; these perform a similar role in grinding (Arbiter and Harris, 1980).

Restricted fields of vision are a common problem with underground mining equipment. Also, when lighting systems are provided, they may be positioned where they cause glare. This restricts the visibility around the machines even further. To help address these problems, the U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a PC based software package to aid in the analysis of certain human engineering aspects of mining equipment design. The software is available for use by equipment manufacturers and mining companies for design work on new machines, as well as for evaluating proposed modifications to existing machines.

In this study, numerical simulations of yield pillars employing the finite element method with time-dependent Drucker-Prager material model are conducted. The stress control mechanism of yield pillars on weak floor strata is studied. The development of pillar yield zone, the distribution of pillar stress and the development of failure zone in the weak floor strata are investigated. The study indicates that a properly selected yield pillar size may significantly reduce the peak stress induced in the weak floor strata and effectively control the development of failure zone in the floor.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health conducted laboratory and field tests to evaluate the effectiveness of dust collector bags for reducing dust liberation and operator exposure from a roof bolter?s dust collection system. The laboratory tests evaluated the bag?s effectiveness to contain dust and the effect on canister filter loading in both a bag and bagless condition. The dust emissions from the collector?s exhaust were also measured in each condition during laboratory testing. Laboratory results show that nearly 100 percent of the test dust fed into the collector was captured by the dust bags. Loading and pressure drop on the dust collector?s canister filter is greatly decreased when using the bags, enabling longer periods of drilling without filter removal/cleaning. The field results showed that, even though dust standards were met, respirable dust in exhausted emissions was reduced around the bolter. Laboratory and field results show that benefits from use of the bags are realized in all areas of operator exposure.

The El Sauzal deposit is a classic, high sulfidation, epithermal gold system located in the southwestern Chihuahua state of Mexico (Fig. 1). A Francisco Gold geologist discovered the prospect in1995. El Sauzal was encountered as a result of an extensive grassroots exploration program in the rugged, dissected volcanic terrains of the Sierra Madre Occidental, around the historical Batopilas silver camp. At El Sauzal, high grade gold is hosted within a series of more permeable, low-dipping, lithic and fine-grained dacitic rocks of early Tertiaryage. The mineralization appears tobe structurally and lithologically controlled. The alteration characteristics are typical of a high sulfidation system, including kaolinite, illite, alunite, dickite and pyrophyllite.

The combined 75th Annual Minnesota Section of SME meeting and 63rd Annual University of Minnesota Mining Symposium was held April 9 and 10, 2002, in Duluth, MN. This year’s theme was “Keys to the Future: Imagination, Innovation and Technology.” The meeting consisted of plenary and technical sessions and a special General Manager’s Session. The technical paper presentations included concurrent mining and mineral processing sessions. In the General Manager’s Session, representatives from the region’s taconite operations presented the current status, concerns and future plans for each of their operations.

INTRODUCTION Many excellent papers have been written and presented regarding agricultural lime and the subject has been covered extensively in books concerning soil science, fertilizing, limestone, etc. We felt challenged to construct a paper that wouldn’t merely be a repetition of past presentations. Therefore, we chose to begin with factors having the most impact on plant growth realizing that the audience is likely to be relatively unfamiliar with this subject. So, we decided to dig deep into the roots of soil and plant growth science in order to better understand the significant role of limestone in this important area. The soil with the higher plants growing upon it forms an open and dynamic ecosystem in which there is flux of energy and material (heat, light, water, nutrients, mineral and organic matter, organisms). Plants root in the soil and then take up oxygen for root respiration, yielding energy for nutrient uptake, water for turgescence and transpiration and use in photosynthesis and the mineral nutrients needed for the synthesis of organic matter. Above the ground the plant takes in light energy and heat using them in photosynthesis to assimilate atmospheric CO2. Photosynthesis is the basic life process of creation. However, we will look at the root room where soil, water, air, and heat economy and the supply of nutrients determine soil fertility and the important role lime plays here. Location is the primary point to be considered when discussing agriculture (climate and soil); secondly, the dynamic and mobility of the minerals (plant nutrients) in the soil; and thirdly the conversion of organic substances into humus. And then there is a great deal of water involved in the growing process. In order to produce 1 kg of dry plant substance, 300 to 800 kg of water must be pumped through the plant and is then lost by transpiration. Cereals, vegetables, and sugar beets consume between 400 to 500 kg of water during the growing process and long-growing crops, such as alfalfa and clover, can consume 600 to 800 kg of water per kg of finished product. Without water, a plant cannot grow. (Reference 1)

Precast concrete segmental lining systems have been gaining widespread use in seismically active areas and a single-pass version of such a system has been developed for use on the Silicon Valley Rapid Transit (SVRT) Project in San Jose, California. The response of tunnel linings to seismic shaking is often predicted using engineering judgment, elastic closed-form solutions and numerical modeling. Such analyses generally assume a continuous structural system and hence do not explicitly model the behavior of the jointed segmental lining. A number of analyses were performed to predict radial and circumferential joint behavior during seismic ovaling and wave propagation. These analyses included a complex, three-dimensional finite element based ground-structure interaction model that incorporates inelastic constitutive soil behavior, cracked concrete properties and no-tension, frictional segment joint surfaces. The paper discusses the results of the analyses and provides guidelines for the design of precast systems in zones of high seismicity.

Pig iron nuggets, which have similar chemical and physical properties with blast furnace pig iron, were produced by a single step heat treatment of self reducing – fluxing dried greenballs. During this single step heat treatment the transformation of self reducing fluxing dried greenballs into pig iron nuggets did not take place instantaneously. Rather, it was composed of three transformation stages, (1) transformation of self reducing – fluxing dried greenballs into direct reduced iron (DRI), (2) transformation of DRI into transition direct reduced iron (TDRI), and (3) transformation of TDRI into pig iron nuggets. Thus, the objective of this research was to investigate these transformation mechanisms by analyzing the transformation stage products. The transformation stage products were produced at a constant furnace temperature of 1425°C and various furnace residence times. They were characterized according to their microstructure, microhardness and apparent density. The changes in the product’s physical and chemical properties with furnace residence time were utilized in understanding the transformation behavior, the chemical events that took place and the controlling mechanisms. It was determined that the transformations were dictated by the changes in the slag viscosity and wetting properties, and by carbon diffusion into metallized areas.

So, while developing its Two Piece Assembly, Goodyear noted a number of trends in the mining industry: •The global market sophistication of equipment and operations requires the packaging of products and services to provide the best return on investment. •Industry consolidation and growth have resulted in fewer, more powerful mining houses, leveraging purchasing power in the marketplace. •User productivity demands continue to drive original equipment manufacturers to develop higher pay-load equipment. •Technology needs include improved ergonomics, to reduce fatigue and increase operator productivity. •Increased laws and environmental regulation prohibit on-site whole tire disposal practices.

If you build a big truck, build a big tire to match it. Let that haulage synergy aid the economics, productivity and lessened maintenance for the unit. Now, Cater-pillar and Michelin have done just that. Discussions began in 1996. Caterpillar was making plans for its 797 ultra-class haul truck. The development team realized the need for a tire that could withstand extreme loads. The 797 would weigh 558 t (615 st) and be capable of 64 km/h (40 mph) speeds. So Caterpillar approached Michelin. The two companies realized the benefits of jointly developing a tire for the 797.

Minerals contribute to the U.S. gross domestic prod-uct (GDP) at several levels?mining, processing and manufacturing finished products. In 2008, the estimated growth rate for the real GDP of the United States was 1.1 percent and the nominal GDP was about $14.3 trillion (Table 1). Trends in various sectors of the domestic economy are often reflected in mineral production and consumption rates. For instance, continued declines in the U.S. housing market during 2008 were reflected in further reductions in the production and consumption of cement, clays, construction sand and gravel and crushed stone (mineral commodities that are used almost exclusively in construction), and those associated with the related manufacture of goods, such as ceramic tile, heating and air conditioning equipment, paint, plumbing and sanitaryware, roofing, wiring and wallboard ? all used by the housing industry. The widespread effects of the slowing domestic economy became more apparent in the last three to six months of 2008 when prices for many mineral commodities declined sharply after reaching record highs earlier in the year, indicating significantly lower demand for those materials or products containing them.

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR), with the assistance of cooperating underground mining operations and state agencies, has conducted research exploring devices and technologies that could be used to assist miners navigating through smoke and dust resulting from a fire or explosion. Recent events in mines confirm that smoke and dust can enter and contaminate mine escapeways creating an atmosphere with severely reduced visibility. This reduced visibility results in substantially increased escape times, possible disorientation or confusion, and increased stress levels, and may prevent evacuation altogether. Tools or devices that assist miners in navigating through smoke-filled areas void of lifelines could make the difference in successful escape from the mine. This paper presents the results of OMSHR research to identify and evaluate tools and devices that could provide meaningful information to evacuating miners in areas with limited visibility and without the benefit of a lifeline.

Particle beneficiation tests are often conducted to determine how the recovery of a key component of a particle mixture varies with overall product yield, i.e., the separation curve. The results can be misleading when an attempt is made to determine the effect of feed grade by comparing separation curves representing different feed grades or key component concentrations. This is a shortcoming of the conventional recovery versus yield diagram, which may not appear to be affected by feed concentration. To overcome this shortcoming, a method is presented for transforming and normalizing the recovery and yield coordinates so that the separation curves representing dif-ferent feed concentrations are directly comparable.

We have searched and analyzed several modern technologies aiming at the best applications of environmental management, the studying of quarrying ? mining as well as the excavation sites ? utilization ? rehabilitation. We have used long-range reflectorless laser surveying systems, so as to achieve the fastest and most accurate surveying of the extractive work sites. We also used them, in order to collect field data, measure distances, surveying monitoring stations and environmental parameters ? data. Furthermore these systems can make the field work quite faster, more reliable and credible and have low cost in collecting data even in dangerous and non-approachable areas. We have used and processed on the field data in G.I.S. applications, in order to create 2-D and 3-D digital ground models. These G.I.S. applications present the existing relief and the management of the final stage of the area. The suggested techniques and works needed, for reclamation and utilization of the areas, could be tried, evaluated and well presented. The evolution and utilization of these ?smart? modern tools for the effective environmental management of quarrying ? mining ? extractive activity sites, will be presented by using case histories from the Hellenic territory.

Of particular interest is the capability of GIS to link spatial features and tabular data. The application of GIS in underground mining discussed here concentrates on four technical areas. INTRODUCTION Traditionally, the purpose of mine ventilation has been defined as diluting, rendering harmless, and sweeping away hazardous gases which may accumulate in the mine workings. In addition, the ventilation sys- tem must keep the mine air as close as possible to the composition of the outside air in order to provide a healthy environment for mineworkers and to prolong the useful life of mine equipment. When plans are being developed for opening a new mine, sound engineering dictates that a calculated estimate be made of both the maximum air quantity requirement and the accept- able mine pressure (head) loss related to the under- ground layout and projections. For efficient mine ventilation, the two problem areas that demand constant attention are (1) the control of fugitive air (through short circuiting or leakage) and (2) the provision of ample airway capacity. Fugitive air is that quantity of air which enters the mine but short-circuits the mine ventilation system through improperly constructed stoppings, doors, overcasts, etc.; it represents an investment in power consumption (to move the air by the fan) while providing little, if any, return on the investment. Typically, efficient mines are those that can deliver 50% of the air handled by their fans to the working faces. Paying close attention to a new mine's ventilation system at the outset can provide numerous benefits during the later stages of mine development. It has often been noted that the main cause of trouble in many mine ventilation systems can be found within a radius of 2500 ft from the fan installation. Ample airway capacity is essential to maintain the mine's head loss within manageable limits. Similar to an industrial ventilation setting, the mine's headings are the ductwork for the handling of air. The difference between normal industrial ventilation and mine ventilation is apparent when more capacity is needed; a plant can install new or larger ductwork, but it is difficult for a mine to install new entries or enlarge existing entries. Air velocities are usually maintained under 800 fpm to limit the stirring up of dust in the intakes. With this in mind, it is usually simple to estimate the number of entries required in the ventilation system. The problem that often arises, though, is when the system's capacity is overestimated and the required head loss to achieve the desired quantity is excessive. Experience has shown that problems are often encountered when the mine's condition requires much more than three inches of water gage to ventilate the mine on a day-to-day basis. Thus, if proper attention is not paid to these parameters in the preplanning and initial development of a new mine, it may take an extremely high water gage to achieve the ultimate quantity. This chapter will not delve deeply into the theory of mine ventilation; many other books have been writ- ten on that subject. Instead, the following sections will point out the important considerations that should take place before the development of a mine ventilation system, as they relate to normal industry practice. FUNDAMENTALS OF AIRFLOW Volume Versus Water Gage The common method of measuring ventilation pressure is in terms of inches of water gage (wg); one inch of water corresponds to a pressure of 5.2 psf (pounds per square foot). Further, airflow follows a square-law relationship between volumes and pressures where, as shown in the previous section, a doubling of quantity requires a quadrupling of pressure. Table 1 shows how heads and quantities are related. Using Table 1, it is readily apparent that, for the same mining conditions, an increase in pressure from one inch wg to three inches wg results in only 34,640 cfm when the initial quantity is 20,000 cfm. Pressure Losses Pressure losses in mine ventilation systems are caused by friction between the heading walls and the air stream and by shock losses due to abrupt changes of the air stream caused by obstructions. The common pressure-loss formula for mine ventilation is: [ ] where H is the pressure loss in inches of water gage, K is the coefficient of friction, L is the length of the airway in feet, 0 is the airway perimeter in feet, V is the air velocity in feet per minute, and A is the cross-sectional area of the airway in square feet. Table 2 lists the US Bureau of Mines schedule of friction factors (K) for mine airways. Recent research indicates that the values of K are slightly less for coal mines than those presented in the USBM Schedule, and Table 3 should be consulted in this instance. It should be
