Kerr-McGee Coal Corporation has used diesel face haulage and support equipment at its dual-seam Galatia Mine in Southern Illinois since production activities commenced in 1983. The mine began production from its lower seam, the Harrisburg No. 5 coal seam, in October 1983 and from the upper Herrin No.6 coal seam in April 1985. Before production began, the company developed a program designed to make use of the flexibility offered by diesel equipment. While productivity was an important goal, the top priority of the program was to provide a safe and healthy work environment for the miners. Management believed that high productivity would naturally follow. History has proven this belief to be true.

Early mining at Manhattan demonstrated that blasthole assays alone were insufficient to control the disposition of material. A program was began using controlled blasting, intense sampling and panning of crushed samples, fire assay checks, and geologic inspections to sort material in the pits. Statistical data confirms that the method provides effective control at minimal cost. This cost is easily offset by additional tonnage found in areas considered to be waste.

Gold was discovered at the Haile mine in Lancaster County, South Carolina in 1827 or 1828, and since that time the mine has been worked intermittently by both open pit and underground methods until its forced closure in 1942 by World War II. Production figures are incomplete, especially for the early years, but the total gold produced is estimated to have been greater than 200,000 ounces. Thus, the Haile mine has been the most productive gold mine in the eastern United States. The upper, residually enriched ores were relatively rich, but the bulk of the production has come from the mining of lower grade ores.

"Strong earthquakes occur frequently in Japan, and some rock tunnels have sustained severe damages on their permanent lining. Many road tunnels, which were constructed by conventional steel arch support and timber lagging method, exist in Japan and they need risk mitigation measures against earthquakes as per our empirical knowledge. Many reinforcing measures for deformed tunnels that may be effective against earthquakes are developed; however, behaviors during earthquakes are not fully understood.In this study, static loading tests and numerical analysis, which simulate a loading condition during earthquakes, were carried out to clarify the effect of the countermeasures. The Load-bearing capacity is estimated for the tunnel structures facilitated by the installment of an inverted arch; however, a joint between inverted arch and sidewall become structural weakness. Rock bolts and carbon fiber sheets have a potential able to mitigate the risks of collapse of the lining by the forces from an earthquake.INTRODUCTIONA number of rock tunnels with no apparent unfavorable ground conditions suffered severe damage, including the collapse of their permanent lining, in large seismic events such as the Chuetsu Earthquake in 2004 (e.g., Mashimo 2005). Since these tunnels were considered to exhibit the required structural strength to survive earthquakes, studies are being carried out to clarify the mechanical behavior of tunnels during earthquakes and their damage mechanism (e.g., Kusaka et al. 2009); however, the aseismic design methodology for mountain tunnels has not yet been established.In many cases of earthquake-damaged tunnels, some defects already existed, such as improper construction and deterioration of lining concrete. Although countermeasures are usually implemented against such problems, their earthquake-resistant effect was not fully understood.In this study, static loading tests and numerical analyses to reproduce these tests were carried out assuming that a rock tunnel was affected by the earthquake to clarify the mechanism of the lining damage and the effect of the countermeasures."

Fluorine is a lively element in both its chemical and economic behavior. It was not isolated as an element until 1886 by Moissan. However, its principal source to this day, fluorspar, was known and its special merits recognized long before that time. Our own mining brother, Agricola, is credited with having named fluorite, the mineral name, in 1546 from the Latin, "fluere", to flow. It made things melt and was already being used as a flux. Because fluorspar has been found as a relatively common gangue mineral in metal ore veins, it has long attracted the attention of geological thinkers seeking to, explain the whys and wherefores of veins. Fluorine has been thought of as one of the principal mineralizers, holding metals in ascending vein solutions for deposition close enough to the eventual surface to be accessible for profitable mining.

If you don't know a gauss from a grasshopper, you may be better off than you, think, particularly if you're an ore dressing engineer charged with the responsibility of selecting magnetic equipment for minerals separation and beneficiation. Gauss is a unit of measure for a magnetic field. It indicates the number of imaginary lines of force per square centimeter or per square inch radiating from a magnet. In discussing the strength characteristics of a magnet, we have come to speak of a magnetic field of 800 gauss, for example, meaning 800 lines of force per square centimeter. Gauss became the standard for selecting drum type separators many years ago under an arbitrary set of circumstances. The standard has continued to this day even though magnetics applications engineers have long considered it inadequate. The configurations of the older gauss meter were such that the most accurate and convenient readings on a drum type separator could be made at distances greater than one inch. So, an arbitrary distance of two inches was established and that two inches became the standard. Since then, it has become commonplace to specify magnetic strengths for drum separators according to average gauss readings at two inches; for example 500 gauss average at two inches, 750 gauss average at two inches and so on, even though gauss readings at two inches have much less to do with the separating and beneficiating function of a given application than was formerly believed. The standard was adopted as a means of gauging the strengths of electromagnetic drum type separators, for they were the only ones around at the time. These machines were usually designed with no magnetic considerations other than that the material to be separated should be agitated vigorously and the magnetic fields should be deep and strong. Drums built this way performed well enough, so it seemed logical to measure their magnetic strengths. Hence, gauss at two inches. Now, new improvements in magnetic techniques have made average gauss measurements at 2 inches positively obsolete.

Over-exposure to noise remains a widespread, serious health hazard in the U.S. mining industries. Most other categories of illnesses and injuries associated with mining have improved, with the exception of hearing loss. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) coal noise data from 2000-2004 show that the continuous mining machine is first among all equipment with 35% of the noise overexposures. Joy Mining Machinery, in collaboration with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), is conducting research to reduce noise generated by continuous mining machines. This paper describes a ?JOY Designed for Noise Reduction? (JOY-DNR; Patent Pending) tail section as a noise control for reducing the noise overexposures of continuous mining machine operators. Underground results show a 45% and 65% noise exposure reduction for the operator when compared to a standard machine. Utilizing this newly developed noise control, along with previously proven controls, will provide continuous mining machine operators an opportunity to be within the MSHA-Permissible Exposure Limit (MSHA-PEL).

Exploration targets and results in the mining industry are commonly summarized in terms of tonnage and grade. Business appraisals require, as additional information, the expected profit or loss implied by the physical summary. The early incorporation of knowledge gained through financial analysis computations can provide a means for economically resolving many common exploration and development problems. Examples of such applications from the activities of exploration planning, reconnaissance, land acquisition, and development planning are presented in this paper.

Selective placement of toxic mine spoil has been advocated as a means of reducing environmental pollution at the source. However, methods of burial to control environmental damage are not well understood. Using the finite element method, this paper investigates the burial of toxic material within low permeability packages below the water table. The effects of differing package and spoil permeabilities, anisotropy, and infiltration are modeled to provide information about their effect on the flow system. Projection can then be made which will assist in the design of the toxic spoil packages to limit the amount of groundwater flowing through them.

The characteristic problems related to drilling a hole for evaluation of an orebody are generally quite similar, whether we're drilling a core hole, or a hole to obtain chip samples. The basic objective in each case is fundamentally an economic factor; to produce the maximum amount of usable information per hole at a reasonable footage price. The success of the drilled hole depends largely upon the amount of investigation and research spent on the prospective area and the ability to forecast the capable personnel needed plus the right kind of drills, ancillary equipment such as bits, muds and various additives necessary to make the drilling program successful. The driller is confronted with a wide variation of drilling problems due to the nature of subsurface conditions. Some of these problems are: overburden, which may consist of clays; sand; boulders; or glacial till. These surface conditions may exist up to 2,000 feet in depth and upon reaching bedrock, formations may consist of swelling shales, broken sandstones, and every conceivable rock-type, coupled with every known structural problem such as dips, faults, folds, etc., and to this added extras such as permafrost and/or ground water problems combine to increase the necessity why an understanding of the problems along with the proper reaction of the driller plus the formula to compensate for ground conditions is necessary to complete a drill hole. Since most geologists are familiar with diamond core drilling techniques, I would like to discuss other methods used in evaluating ore deposits.

Pore-filling organic material concentrated uranium to form sandstone-hosted primary uranium deposits in the Jurassic Morrison Formation of the Grants uranium region, New Mexico. Petrographic observations and radiometric ages for primary ore in the Westwater Canyon Member require that the organic material was emplaced early in the diagenetic history of the host sandstone; in fact, organic material was emplaced before major compaction. This inferred early emplacement constrains models concerning the nature and origin of the organic material and thus also constrains models of ore genesis. Reconstruction of the burial history of the basin indicates that Late Jurassic-Early Cretaceous time, the interval of inferred emplacement of the organic material, was probably not a time of hydrocarbon generation and migration. Nuclear magnetic resonance analyses, elemental abundances, and isotopic studies provide further constraints on the nature of the organic material, and data from these studies are consistent with a humic acid rather than an oil origin. In addition, the overall tabular shape of primary uranium orebodies and the way these orebodies are suspended in the host sandstone mimics Recent deposits of humate, the precipitated form of humic acids. The critical clue that favors a humic acid origin for ore-related organic material is provided by the nature and patterns of postdepositional alterations that are spatially and temporally related to primary ore, specifically destruction of detrital magnetite and ilmenite (iron-titanium oxide) grains. Humic acids are implicated in the destruction of iron-titanium oxide grains because these organic acids are one of the most effective natural agents in leaching of Iron from these grains. Thus, timing constraints, chemical evidence, orebody geometry, and the nature and patterns of ore-related alterations favor a humic acid origin and suggest that an oil origin is highly unlikely. Because alteration of iron-titanium oxide grains tracks the pathways of humic-bearing solutions through the host sandstones, it is possible to trace these solutions back to their source. Alteration patterns in the Westwater Canyon Member suggest that the humic-bearing solutions originated as pore fluids in the mudflat facies of the overlying Brushy Basin Member and moved into adjacent sandstones during early dewatering of the mudstones. The humic acids precipitated, by the process of cation loading, in tabular layers. Uranium was concentrated within these tabular layers by complexation with the humic acids to form primary uranium orebodies.

The knowledge concerning the lubrication of open gearing for mining machinery has contained many unknowns and at its best has relied to a great degree on a "Rule of Thumb" procedure. It will be within the scope of this paper to explain what we have learned to date and what must be learned in the future. The results in the lubrication of open gearing have spanned the spectrum of unsatisfactory to satisfactory. With the advent of larger mining machinery, we are faced with the necessity of a more thorough knowledge of open gear lubrication. We have avail- able, better steels for the gearing, advanced technology and machinery for cutting proper tooth profiles, and better means of aligning the teeth in the gear train. This has made it possible to transmit more horsepower through the same size gear set than ever before, if we have the proper lubrication to complement the factors previously mentioned. We have set up computer programs which can calculate the data fox the tooth forms, the correct operating center distances, the contact stresses, the bending stresses, and the PVT factor of the gear teeth. This program does not, at the present, have sufficient data available to calculate the type of lubricant which should be used.

Microwave pretreatment can improve grindability by weakening brittle particulate material prior to size reduction. The differential thermal expansion experienced by multiphase materials during rapid heating can also promote damage in the grain-boundary region, which may ultimately translate into enhanced liberation. The effect of microwave pretreatment on the breakage characteristics of different ores has been studied using the Ultrafast Load Cell. The energy accumulated during impact (fracture energy) and the particle stiffness have been measured for untreated and microwaved ore samples. It has been observed that microwave pretreatment can weaken brittle multiphase particulate material, as observed by reductions in fracture energy and increase in damage.

The amount of fine material (minus 60 Tyler mesh) generated during calcination and/or handling of calcined abrasive grade bauxite from Alcoa's operations at Moengo, Suriname, has recently increased relative to past production experience. Bulk samples of raw abrasive grade bauxite from three deposits in the Moengo area have been studied in order to determine the factors controlling the generation of fine material samples from the Jones IC and Tapira deposits, which generate excessive amounts of fine material, have been compared with reference samples from the Begi Gado deposit, which does not generate excessive fine material. Additional type samples of abrasive grade and marginal abrasive grade bauxite from deposits in the Moengo area which represent different bauxite textures found in the Jones IC, Jones I, and Begi Gado deposits have also been studied. Field observations in the Moengo area have indicated that abrasive grade bauxites with a dull, earthy appearance generally do not generate excessive fines. On the other hand, excessive fines are generally associated with coarsely crystalline bauxite in which the gibbsite crystals appear to sparkle in sunlight.

Iron ore pellets made from concentrates produced from low grade iron ores are the primary iron bearing feedstock for iron making in North American blast furnaces. Steelmakers are demanding increasingly higher quality to provide for improved blast furnace productivity, efficiency, product quality and environmental compliance. Unfortunately, this higher quality iron ore product must be produced from the vast deposits of low grade iron ores that are becoming increasingly poorer in quality with regard to mineral liberation and ease of concentration. Since some of these low grade iron ores require grinding to as fine as 90% -500 mesh (25 microns) for liberation and since more of the silicious gangue and other minor undesirable constituents must be removed to provide the higher quality, we have come to depend on flotation to do the added work. Flotation technology and other preflotation unit operations must improve to meet these increasing demands. In many cases, flotation equipment, reagents and circuit operating performance have improved little during the last two to three decades. Mechanical flotation cells have grown from 14 cubic meters (500 cubic feet) to over 84 cubic meters (3000 cubic feet) to help reduce capital and operating costs; however, flotation metallurgical performance has not improved, Column flotation has only recently shown promise in improving metallurgical performance for iron ore rougher flotation. Previous column flotation success was mainly in scavenger and cleaner flotation steps for treating minerals other than iron ore. Although some new flotation chemicals have been developed for removal of silica and other minor constituents under widely varying mineralogical scenarios, recovery of iron mineral has not improved. The operation and control of flotation circuits have become more challenging because of the increasing workload on flotation. Better sensing, process control and operation of flotation circuits are essential as we go forward. Iron ore upgrading by flotation can be classified into either anionic or cationic methods. Anionic flotation of either iron oxide or silicious gangue is accomplished by collector type, pH control and selective chemical activation . Similarly, cationic flotation of silica or iron oxides is accomplished by collector type, activation and/or pH control. Removal of other minor constituents is achieved by using specialty chemicals under controlled conditions for preflotation, co-flotation or post flotation steps. Generally, anionic flotation is used for floating cleanly liberating crystalline oxidized iron ores such as hematite, specularite and martite. Earthy and hydrated oxides such as hematite and geothite can be upgraded with either anionic or cationic collectors after controlled dispersion of slimes or prior removal of slimes. Anionic flotation of silicious waste can be achieved by calcium activation of silica. For magnetic iron ores small amounts of locked silica particles (middlings) can be removed by cationic silica flotation, which is the only method in commercial use in North America today. Historically the efficiency of these iron ore flotation processes has been restricted by the loss of fine iron particles (minus 500 mesh) to the tailings product. New technology is required to overcome this loss and improve overall flotation performance. Development of technology for more selective separation of silica and other minor undesirable constituents from iron ore will provide both quality and cost benefits to the iron and steel producers. Development of future iron ore production in North America will face stiffer technical challenges. These new and undeveloped iron ore deposits are largely oxidized (non-magnetic) and by nature contain more slimes and other undesirable constituents. Unless other new technology evolves, flotation will be the major treatment process required to upgrade these difficult low grade iron ores.

MINERALS INFORMATION PROGRAM Mineral data collection by the Federal Government actually began in 1882 with an appropriation by Congress to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Although the Bureau of Mines was instituted in 1910, it was not until 1924 that the collection, interpretation, and dissemination of worldwide information on production, consumption, and availability of minerals became the responsibility of the Bureau. The objective of the Bureau's minerals information program is to maintain and provide reliable, timely, and comprehensive data for analysis of national minerals problems. This program is implemented by a staff of specialists who cover about 100 mineral commodities and the mineral industries of 168 countries. Data are also provided on the minerals industry on the State and county level. The specialists analyze information to identify trends and problems, forecast future U.S. and world supply and demand for the nonfuel minerals, and relate trends and developments to their impact on the domestic minerals industry. Data Sources and Publications The primary sources of data concerning the domestic minerals industry are the companies that produce, use, and trade in these minerals. Approximately 60,000 survey forms are sent to industry, on a monthly, quarterly, semiannual, or annual basis, to obtain the data. Domestic trade data are provided by the Bureau of the Census, U.S. Department of Commerce. Information on mineral developments abroad is developed by Bureau specialists from mineral reports supplied by U.S. embassies worldwide, from primary source documents, from a review of the technical mining literature, and from onsite mine and plant visits in foreign countries. The information is disseminated through a number of Bureau publications: "Mineral Industry Surveys" provide aggregated data on a monthly. quarterly, or semiannual basis to give timely information on the most important mineral commodities. "Mineral Commodity Summaries," published each January, provides preliminary annual data on supply and demand and discusses significant events of the previous year. The final data are published later in the "Minerals Yearbook," which is the definitive historical record for mineral statistics. "Mineral Facts and Problems," an encyclopedic work issued every 5 years, covers industry structure, technology, supply-demand analysis. economic factors, reserves, and forecasts of U.S. and world demand for individual commodities. "Mineral Perspectives" and "Mineral Issues" cover important international mineral developments and significant issues of current U.S. policy as they relate to minerals. Discussions and analyses of mineral trends and developments also appear in other Bureau publications, such as "Minerals and Materials" and "Information Circulars." These publications provide the basis for analysis and policy determinations by the Bureau and by virtually every Federal agency concerned with minerals, defense issues, the national economy, and foreign relations. The data are also used by industry in planning capital investments in mines and processing plants, by financial analysts, by U.S. delegations in their work with international commodity groups, and by a host of other minerals related organizations. Data Bases The data bases used by the specialists for preparing publications or in response to a continuous stream of inquiries include both those that contain individual commodity data from respondents, and those that are summary data bases on production, trade, capacity, employment and a number of other minerals-related items, not all of which are derived from data reported to the Bureau of Mines. The data bases maintained on the mainframes are not accessible by non- Bureau users. Salt, because of its plasticity, exerts a major influence in deformation. Resulting salt structures are common world-wide. A special type, salt domes, are associated with thick sequences of sediments deposited over salt. Their upward intrusion is generally thought to be in response to buoyancy. Mines in salt domes reveal an internal pattern compatible with large amounts of vertical flowage. Caprock, the end product of accumulation of anhydrite from salt dissolution, attests to long continued upward growth and concomitant truncation by moving underground waters. Concepts of modes of growth are evaluated and related to problems in utilization.

Mining lignite in the Gulf Coast often requires some interaction with shallow ground water system. Suggestions for determining ground water data and analysis requirements for regulatory compliance are given. Simple methods for estimating mine inflow seepage, ground water level declines, and changes in ground water chemistry, which may result from mining, are discussed. The mining of lignite often results in interaction with shallow ground water systems. An evaluation of the interaction is required as input to mine permitting and engineering. Your evaluation will proceed more smoothly and produce more meaningful results with some planning prior to performing your evaluation. The effect of pulping reagents on the flotation de-inking of laser printed wastepaper was investigated with regard to the removal efficiency of toner and mineral filler particles for different pH values. These results show that caustic pulping causes the toner to be released from the fibers at larger particles sizes. On the other hand, acid pulping not only causes the toner to be released at smaller particles sizes but also increases the concurrent flotation removal of mineral filler particles. It was experimentally observed that the froth generation and stability during flotation were improved for acidic pH values.
