Two three-lane highway tunnels, 700 and 2900 m long, make up the driven tunnels portion of Melbourne City Link. Tunnel construction, using design-construct delivery, commenced in May 1996. Construction required excavation through varying rock conditions; temporary support included ground freezing, pipe-spiling, steel sets, and rock bolts. Permanent support for the tunnels required both drained and undrained tunnel cross sections using unreinforced concrete. This paper reviews the construction methods, and highlights some of the not-so-standard designs developed while construction was underway.

Waste-dumps originating from the mining industry constitute a serious environmental problem if they are not properly rehabilitated. Industrial and domestic sewage sludge from waste water purification plants on the other hand constitute a problem of environmentally acceptable disposal as these residues contain a large number of potential contaminants. The current project aims at developing an integrated methodology to rehabilitate the mining waste-dumps by the use of sewage sludge so that the two mentioned problems will be solved at once.

The influence of various installation angles of hydrocyclone on its operation indexes was investigated, and the correspondent mathematical models were established in this paper. The models developed in this paper can be used to the optimizing control of hydrocyclone and make the hydrocyclone as a particle size sensor.

This article reviews different technologies used for beneficiation of siliceous and calcareous phosphate ores of different origin. The review sheds light on recent trends suggested for solving problems associated with separation of different impurities from phosphates. Applications of recently modified flowsheets as well as new reagents in the flotation of phosphate ores of sedimentary origin are highlighted.

The waste phosphogypsum produced by Paradeep Phosphate Limited (PPL) at Paradeep (Cuttack, Orissa, India) consists primarily of calcium sulfate with small amounts of phosphoric acid, calcium fluoride and other harmful components. Presently these are dumped as waste. In this work, laboratory trials have been made to utilize the calcium sulfate present in the phosphogypsum to prepare usable products like ammonium sulfate, calcium carbonate and magnesium sulfate.

Expansion strain and stress that exist in floor rocks and that are due to the presence of water, were derived from a basic theory of mechanics. The results indicate that water stress and strain are the important factors that cause failure of the floor rocks and induce floor heave.

Large (> 100,000 oz.) sediment hosted disseminated gold (SHDG) deposits are often spatially associated with anticlines. Many SHDG deposits are within or closely associated with windows. Windows are erosional manifestations of fold culminations (4-way closed anticlines). Hydrocarbons are often trapped in fold culminations in the Canadian Rockies, and may account for degraded hydrocarbons in many SHDG deposits. In the Eastern Basin and Range Province, Mesozoic anticlines may have been large scale conduits fm gold bearing Mesozoic and Cenozoic hydrothermal fluids which became trapped and/or concentrated at the fold culminations.

Hindered-settling columns are used throughout the minerals industry for both size and density separations. In this study, the performance of a continuous laboratory-scale hindered-settling column was evaluated for various particle systems. The test variables included solids composition, water rate and column height. Column performance was evaluated using partition curves and corresponding performance parameters.

This paper examines the viability of using the QEM*SEM automated scanning electron microscope for the determination iron sulfide and calcite volumetric percentages. The analytical reliability was verified by comparing elemental abundances calculated for fourteen samples using the QEM*SEM volumetric percentages and appropriate mineral compositions and elemental abundances determined by standard laboratory procedures. The abundances were comparable, thus demonstrating suitability of this technique for evaluation of the acid neutralization and generation potentials of mining wastes.

During the last decade grassroots minerals education programs have blossomed throughout the United States and in other countries. At the same time an environmental education movement has been gaining momentum. While this offers a unique opportunity to share the mining industry’s story, it also has some potential pitfalls. The hydrometallurgy review did not arrive in time for publication in the May issue. 1992 was not a banner year for hydrometallurgical installations or new hydrometallurgical developments. Installation of copper solvent extraction/electrowinning circuits were under construction or began operation in Nevada (Yerrington ), Arizona (SilverBell), Chile (Copiapo and Escondida), Peru (Toquepala and Cuayone) and Australia (Girilambone). These installations will produce more than 100 kt/a (110,000 stpy) of cathode copper. Several new heap leach gold facilities using conventional technologies were announced or were put into operation. New technologies undergoing widespread testing include biological oxidation of low-grade ores in a heap leach mode and evaluation of new agglomerating agents.
