The current US national commitment to expanding the human presence into the solar system will clearly require major facilities in Earth orbit or possibly on the Moon. Such facilities will need large amounts of materials for structural modules, life support, propulsion and shielding. The heavy transportation costs in fuel required to lift materials from the Earth's surface make a terrestrial-based space system inherently inefficient. A more cost-effective approach would be to provide as much of the required materials as possible from other bodies in space not having the high cost of Earth launch. This paper identifies potential targets for space-based resource utilization, constraints on exploitation and relative benefits of various sources.

The conveyor housing's corroded, exposed metal- deck was cleaned and cocooned to prevent renewed corrosion, at less than the cost of replacing the structure. And the process did not require operations to shut down. That was the result for Akzo Salt at its mine under Lake Erie's Whiskey Island, just off Cleveland, OH'S north coast. The exposed metal deck was on the underside of a covered, outdoor conveyor used to load mined road salt into boats.

This paper will discuss the value of cream a common information model for the mining industry. Information models are a proven technique for quantifying diverse information in a non-proprietary and easily understood manner. Combining information models with emergent data exchange technologies such as XML and SOAP, the mining industry could substantially reduce the costs of sharing information, reduce dependence on proprietary information systems, leverage inexpensive PC desktop technology, and provide a solid foundation for simplifying mine information systems. The paper will provide an overview of information modeling, discuss practical and proven applications of the modeling technique in the mining industry, propose how such a model could be developed in a collaborative manner and discuss the benefits of such an effort.

As originally conceived, this paper was to address the costs of environmental compliance, focus on environmental impact statements, and describe how those costs impact mining projects. The intent was to do wide ranging mathematical analyses to demonstrate the varying impacts on mining projects depending on their size, timing, return on investment and other salient project features. The initial portion of the numerical analysis necessary to this purpose was performed. The results showed a pattern of impacts familiar to the mining industry:

The presence of calcium ion in iron ore pulps causes heterocoagulation of rnontmorillonite on hematite leading to indiscriminate dispersion. Two methods were investigated to control the adverse effect of montmorillonite: a chemical method using such complexing agents as EDTA and sodium tripoly- phosphate, and a mechanical method involving ultra- sonic treatment. Their roles in controlling the adverse effect were investigated by zeta potential measurements, starch adsorption tests, and flocculation and selective flocculation tests.

The complexity of large geographically diverse or multicommodity mining companies requires a corporate structure, which provides the maximum long-term effectiveness. Structure models exist along the spectrum of centralization to decentralization. This paper examines the trade-offs of flexibility, cost, decision making, consistent strategies, and corporate control associated with different structural models as applied to mining companies. The mining industry typically lends itself to a business unit model. However, the degree of decentralization depends on size, proximal operations, technical complexity, product mix, geographic spread, mining methods employed, and the inherent capabilities of an organization.

Estimating the Iron Ore reserves of Minnesota are directly related to both the geology of the deposit and the Scandinavian heritage of its people. The flat lying deposits, when properly prospected, make estimating easy and accurate across wide areas of the Mesabi Range. It also makes taxation simple on the unmined reserves. The reserves are their heritage and all the people should benefit, not just the owners. Heritage also dictates that newly discovered ores were there before discovery, hence, subject to the omitted property tax and liable for six years back taxes.

There are differences in design aspects between steel and rubber linings in grinding mills. This paper describes the basic design rules for rubber liners for different grinding applications. When converting a mill from steel to rubber liners, the design must be changed from such familiar steel liner shapes as wedge bars and plates, wave liners, and ship-lap, to take advantage of the characteristics of rubber. Very little of the knowledge of the wear properties of steel can be used for the design of rubber mill liners.

The present paper analyzes the motion of a particle of material in a horizontaly rotating tumbling mill. The sliding of the particle under action of dynamic and friction forces and its free flight fall are analyzed. It was found that mechanism of free-fall occurs at supercritical rotations of the mill.

Inorganic fillers and pigments such as kaolin, diatomaceous earth silica, and talc were treated with various surfactants, and the changes in their surface properties monitored. When they were treated with a cationic surfactant, they became hydrophobic and the overall surface free energies were decreased substantially. The decrease in surface free energy was mostly due to the decrease in the acid-base component (ysab) of the surface free energy, indicating that hydrophobizing an inorganic pigment entails a reduction in ysab. It was found that the surface characterization technique employed in the present work was useful for studying the effects of using various other surfactants for surface treatment.

This paper presents the results of a large scale trial of polycrystalline diamond picks (PDC) on longwalls with particular reference to dust control. Results from fixed position monitoring showed that PDC picks produced less respirable dust than tungsten carbide Point Attack picks. Dust generation at the longwall face was lower by 39 - 43%. Field trials also indicated that the life of a PDC pick to be at least 1460 tonnes/pick.

This paper presents a review of halogen solvents used in the processing of precious metals. Reagents of widely varying chemical structures, such as chlorine gas, calcium and sodium hypochlorite, chlorine dioxide, iodine and bromine have been used for precious metal extraction. None of these chemicals are a replacement for cyanide: however, each of these chemicals present an opportunity for use in processing a specific type of ore. The ore and chemical must be matched to each other for success. Recovery of metal from the leach solutions also offers challenges.

Mineral processing options and technical innovations should be financially assessed. Indeed technical feasibility alone does not offer an adequate process selection criterion. An appraisal by the use of engineering economics principles leads to a more efficient evaluation and selection of feasible mineral processing solutions. Financial consequences of different options synthesised by profitability indices allow better decision making. Selected examples derived from real world problems are used to illustrate the potential of engineering-economics methods applied to mineral processing.

Rest potential, cyclic voltammetry and chronopotentiometry measurements were made to study the effects of cathodic polarization of chalcopyrite, simulating the mineral contacted with grinding media under a nitrogen atmosphere. The reaction products on the chalcopyrite surface were identified by XPS, and the mechanism of the cathodic reaction was proposed. Microflotation tests were performed to investigate the effects of surface changes on the floatability of chalcopyrite.

The ultrafast load cell (UFLC) has proved to be an exceptionally good device for the study of the fundamental processes associated with the impact fracture of particulate material. A new high- sensitivity UFLC has been commissioned at the Utah Comminution Center for the study of low-impact energy single-particle fracture. The force-time histories of individual fracture events have been measured. The force and energy absorbed at crack initiation have been measured at several particle sizes. The mass specific energy for fracture and the associated breakage function have been determined. The distributions of particle breakage energy and particle strength have been measured as a function of particle size.

This research came about because of the recognized need for a safe, easy way to line small-diameter bored raises (less than 150 cm). Currently, an operator must go down the raise and apply the concrete lining manually, using the shotcrete method of application. With an automated system, there would be no man positioned in the bore itself. All control functions could be commanded from a central location. Shotcreting in the confined space of a small-diameter bored raise presents problems that can be overcome by the application of shotcrete using a remote system.
