"The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health completed a 15-month study at an underground limestone mine crusher booth that evaluated three research parameters: (1) the effectiveness of a filtration and pressurization system for improving the air quality inside the operator booth, (2) the relative effectiveness of ? > 99 and ? > 95 experimental prototype filters in the system, and (3) the performance of three different cab pressure monitoring devices. The protection factor was quantified monthly using particle counters in the respirable dust range of 0.3 to 1 µm particle size, and gravimetric dust samples were gathered at the beginning and end of the overall study. Under static (closed-door) conditions, the filtration unit offered a gravimetric calculated protection factor between 10 and 31, depending on the filter type and loading condition. The monthly particle counting analysis shows that the ? > 95 filter offers a protection factor nearly five times that of the ? > 99 filter, where n = 15 samples. The booth pressure monitors were tested and proved to be a valid indicator of system performance over time. IntroductionDesigned and installed correctly, enclosed cabs, operator booths and control rooms offer mine workers protection from noise and physical hazards, such as flying rock and debris, as well as a more comfortable environment in regards to temperature and humidity (Organiscak et al., 2016). While it is easy to quantify the operation of a cab’s air-conditioning unit by measuring the temperature, or observe whether the cab offers protection from flying debris, it is somewhat more difficult to quantify its performance in reducing respirable dust hazards.The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been conducting applied research to improve the air quality inside the enclosed cabs of mobile equipment, resulting in the mathematical modeling of enclosed cab filtration systems (Organiscak and Cecala, 2008). The same principles that govern the performance of filtration systems on mobile equipment are applicable to stationary enclosures such as operator booths and control rooms (Noll, Cecala and Hummer, 2015). While stationary enclosures are similar to mobile cabs, the work area can be significantly larger. Workers in booths and control rooms also tend to stay within the enclosure for a greater percentage of the day as opposed to workers on mobile equipment who enter and exit frequently."

The planning, installation and commissioning of the first scheme of controlled recirculation of air flow in a section of coal mine in Great Britain is described, together with the proposals for a second installation. The work updates a previous paper (Robinson and Harrison, l986) on the subject. The special problems of ventilating the increasingly distant faces of the undersea mines in the North East Area of the British Coal Corporation are discussed and the alternative solutions stated. The advantages of using a system of controlled recirculation of air are proposed together with the safety features considered necessary. Design and installation details of the recirculation fans and a new booster fan are described.

INTRODUCTION Essentially three strategies are pursued in parallel for protecting the underground working force in mining against the consequences of methane ignitions which might lead to explosions: • Sufficient ventilation for avoiding the formation of explosive methane-air mixtures. • Avoiding sources of ignition caused possibly by electrical equipment or friction. • Structural explosion protection for limiting explosion propagation to the farthest-going extent for the case that methane is fired because of failing of the above preventive measures taken. The corresponding methods taken in mechanized roadheadings with point-attack roadheaders in German coalmining are subject of this paper. VENTILATION In ventilation of roadheading sites the following is to be considered in respect of methane control: • Sufficient air flows by volume being cycled to the heading face for diluting released methane to safe concentrations. • Sufficient local air velocities for effective mixing of methane and air in the whole heading site, in particular directly on the heading face and underneath the roof. Furthermore, ventilation needs to be laid out in a way that cut- ting does not result in health affecting dust exposure at any working place. Accordingly, the ventilation systems shown on Fig. 1 including primary and, if necessary, secondary auxiliary ventilation air ducts as well as dedusters, are used in roadheadings. This equipment is run according to the following principles: • If the roadheader is at standstill, the heading face is ventilated by the free air jet from the blowing duct closest to the face. In this operation phase the deduster is shut-down. • During cutting, the exhaust of the blowing air duct is automatically closed, and the deduster is taken into operation. The in- coming fresh air is now locally discharged via a lateral orifice, or distributed by Coanda-type ducts from the primary or secondary ventilation air duct. In this way, a stable dust wall not disturbed by the jet of the air duct is formed in front of the heading face. Only the ventilation air stream taken in by suction of the close-to-face deduster is passed through the inby zone of the heading face (over approx. 20 m). The clean exhaust of the deduster is dischayed to the roadway in some distance outby. Immediately at the heading face, methane accumulations possibly released by cutting are diluted by compressed-air jets from air-movers located near the roof which assure more rapid motion of the air without distuhing the dust wall. • In the zone of overlapping of primary and secondary duct and the deduster - that zone possibly is poorly ventilated during cutting - sufficient local air speed is assured by Coanda-type ducts or additional ventilation jets for avoiding methane accumulation. The regulations of the inspectorate specifies geometrical conditions to be met with these configurations of ventilation equipment. In-seam roadways are ventilated at rates > 0,5 m/s. For dedusters, present-day ventilation air flows are of 600-800 m+/ min. Ventilation monitoring and control is assured by units for measuring methane and ventilation air flows. If pre-set thresholds are exceeded or fallen short of, these measuring units shut-down - dependent on potential hazard - any not intrinsically safe electrical equipment in the roadheading, either totally or in limited zones. In addition, CO-measuring units near the roadway en- trance serve for early detection of mine fires. In spite of this ventilation layout and the equipment used and in spite of the water spray systems on the cutting head (discussed later in this paper) several cases of methane ignition and subsequent burning off (however, no explosions) have been recorded in the recent past. Therefore, the above-described ventilation is nowadays complemented in many cases by machine-mounted ventilation equipment for the immediate surroundings of the cutting head. Ventilation of the surroundings of the cutting head Investigations carried out subsequent to the above-mentioned gas ignitions have shown that the high ventilation air speed necessary for rapid dilution of methane could not permanently be arrived at in the following zones: • The direct zone of cutting, in particular during sumping. • The floor zone above the debris, predominantly below the cut- ting head. Accordingly, VOEST ALPINE-Bergtechnik, a producer of mining machinery, in cooperation with DMT developed for point- alttack roadheaders a novel machine-mounted ventilation equipment, the Jet-Block" (AERO SAFE Jet-Block) shown on Fig. 2. This system allows to ventilate the above-mentioned critical zones with high flow speeds. One AS Jet-Block is mounted on each side of the boom approx. 0.5 m behind the cutting head. The blocks discharge compressed-air jets with high energy from 10 nozzles per block into the hazardous zones (Fig. 3). Two nozzles of each jet block are tangentially oriented toward the upper circumference of the cutting head, the others are arranged fan-like with orientation to the heading face underneath the cutting head and the debris. The appropriate software and hardware necessary to adapt an X-ray CT analyzer for the determination of coal washability was developed and successfully tested for well-characterized samples under laboratory conditions. Evaluation of the CT-based analyzer under simulated on-line conditions is also presented to verify the on-line capabilities of the newly developed X-ray CT analyzer for the control of coarse coal cleaning circuits. The investigation shows that the data obtained from CT washability analyses compare favorably with experimental sink float data. Further, image frequency was considered to evaluate the CT-Based coal washability analyzer for simulated on-line conditions. Specifically, the number of observations (image spacing) needed for accurate sampling and the total time required to perform the calculations for a representative data set were determined. Minerals beneficiation commonly requires initial crushing and grinding so that the mineral phase we seek to concentrate is adequately liberated to obtain a product of specified grade at optimum recovery. To some degree this also is true for coal preparation. In the comminution process we liberate not only the product but also the tailings phase. The true objective is, therefor, to eliminate from the comminution circuit whatever particulate matter has reached specified liberation, regardless of whether the particle is product or tailings material. Overgrinding either of the two phases ties up mill capacity and usually also burdens the downstream processing steps by increasing costs or decreasing recovery, or both. In view of this situation, one would expect concentration steps to be commonly incorporated into the cominution circuit. The reasons this is not done may vary, but probably include the desire to utilize large scale unit operations, e.g., large mills, in conjunction with very simple processes. Hydrocyclones have satisfied this desire but may not always be employed for the right reasons. Hydrocyclones are indeed simple. They also are rugged and forgiving. Unfortunately, these virtues are frequently misused. The direct results are inefficient classification and overgrinding. The indirect results are added costs through recovery losses, unnecessary recirculation, and so on,

Why is there such an increased thrust toward positive multiple use land management and where will it lead? History and purpose of the mining law of 1872. John Marshall discovered gold at Sutter?s mill near Coloma, California, on January 19, 1848, and utter chaos resulted. The great migration of people to the undeveloped western lands had begun. Prior to this discovery, copper, lead, and iron had been the minerals for which the laws were made. With this discovery of gold on the public domain, it became apparent that congressional legislation was necessary. This became even more apparent as each of the numerous mining districts which were springing up in California, and elsewhere in the west adopted local miners' customs to regulate their activities. Although these early miners acted under mining district rules and in some cases state regulations, they were, in reality, appropriating minerals without sanction of federal law.

The objective of blending materials in a bedding pile is to reduce the variation in successive samples taken from the materials to be blended. In designing a bedding and reclaiming operation, several mechanisms are available to effect the reduction of variability, or increase in homogeneity, of the materials. These mechanisms can act before stacking, in the stacking process, in reclaiming and after reclaiming. In evaluating alternative methods of stacking and reclaiming, the potential user must judge each method on the basis of certain criteria; the capital cost of the equipment, the allowable absolute variability of the reclaimed product and the effectiveness of blending. Several stacking and reclaiming methods have been tested using a computer simulation. Based on the results of this program, factors were developed to describe the effectiveness of blending for chevron stacking of discrete materials and preblended materials, bucket wheel reclaiming and drum reclaiming. From these factors, the total effectiveness of a combined stacking and reclaiming system can be determined.

The Singapore Land Transport Authority (LTA) is currently expanding capacity by extending their Metro system from South of the city to the North East end of the island. The scope of Contract 704 involved excavating a long reach of tunnel which had a complex rock/soil interface comprised of fresh granite overlaid by clayey sand. Two 6.5 m diameter Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) TBM’s were used to bore the tunnels. These machines were designed so that both hard and soft rock could be excavated. The cutter head was equipped with a combination of both rippers and disk cutters. Soil conditioning was achieved by delivering foam through a multiple port injection system. This very irregular profile of the interfaces posed many challenges to the equipment and the people.

Crushing and grinding practice in Sweden follows largely the international pattern. Certain special circumstances, however, have had an influence on the development. Most mines are worked underground in either quite small or in very large units. To utilize small sulphide ores, custom milling is rather common. Apart from the cement industry, the rock species treated are hard and abrasive. Another important factor is the increasingly strict requirements placed on the mechanical condition of different products, especially lump ores and coarse iron ore concentrates. A significant feature in the design and development of Swedish crushing and grinding practice has also been close cooperation between machinery manufacturers and the users. An account of these conditions and an outline of the crushing and grinding techniques employed in Sweden are presented in this paper with emphasis on the mining industry. For background purposes it may be mentioned that crude ore production in Sweden last year included 45 mill. tonsx) of iron ore, of which some 20 mill. tons from Kiruna alone, and 4 mill. tons of sulphide ore from 22 other mines, fig. 1. In addition 8 mill. tons of limestone were quarried for cement production and several million tons of stone and sand for roads, aerated concrete, etc.

The alkaline hydrothermal processing of K-feldspar rocks in an autoclave can be a pathway to synthesize a potassium fertilizer for tropical soils that is potentially cheaper and more efficient than traditional potash (KCl). When K-feldspar undergoes hydrothermal alteration in the presence of calcium oxide (CaO), it generates a complex mixture of calcium-aluminum-silicate-hydrate (CASH) minerals that incorporate K atoms stochastically in their structure. These atoms are subsequently released, as shown in a test-tube leaching test, indicating a possible uptake by crops. The relationship between the processing temperature and time in the autoclave for the hydrothermal reaction and the resulting mineralogy and elemental release are only partially understood and are investigated in this study. Elucidating that relationship is the key requisite for subsequent techno-economic analysis, and ultimately for the development of a fertilizer that can be considered as a feasible alternative to KCl.

Nowadays, geophysical prospecting is implemented in order to resolve a diversity of geological, hydrogeological and geotechnical problems. Though plenty of applications and a lot of research have been conducted in the country-side, only a few have been reported in the literature concerning urban areas, mainly due to high levels of noise present that aggravate most of the geophysical methods (e.g. electromagnetic, seismic, gravity etc.) or due to spatial limitations that hinder normal method implementation (e.g. electrical). Among all geophysical methods, electrical tomography proves to be the most rapid and urban noise insusceptible technique. This work presents a case study in the urban area of Hania (Crete I., Greece), where Electrical Resistivity Tomographies (ERTs) have been carried out for the detection and identification of possible buried ancient ruins or other manmade structures, prior the foundation of a building. Nineteen profiles were surveyed in a 20x40m grid using dipole-dipole configuration. The results indicate two areas of interest, that are interpreted as probable old wells, in the context of the existence, in former times and in the same area, of an olive oil plant. In the vicinity, near surface ancient ruins have been disclosed, but no such evidence provided this survey, for the particular area under study and the prospected depth. The collected ERT-data were processed by applying advanced algorithms in order to obtain a 3D-model of the study area that depicts more clearly and accurately the interesting subsurface structures.

The Freeport Sulphur Company operates four sulphur mines in the coastal marsh area-03 South Louisiana. Employing the Frasch process of mining, approximately 13-million gallons of water per day is heated to a mining temperature of 325°F and is injected into the sulphur bearing formations of the four mines. A volume of cold waste water, roughly equal to the Input, is removed from the formations and presents a disposal problem. Two additional mines are currently being developed and will increase the disposal volume by an additional 5-million gallons per day. Although these properties are in a relatively small area, geographically speaking, as shown in Figure 1, they each represent a separate disposal problem with the treatment methods designed for the individual mine.

The exploration, geologist of necessity has to have a wide working knowledge of many specialties other than hiw own, First he has to use his own technical background to find a deposit,, of a mineral that is of interest, Once found, his problems are Just beginning, He then has to assume the role of an economist, an accountant, a mining engineer, a chemist, a metallurgist,, a salesman and what-have you, In the economic field, he must determine the marketability of either the ore or the refined mineral. He must gauge the supply and demand for the particular mineral he is interested in and make his best guess as to ultimate cash flow from a deposit over the estimated life of said deposit, He must then assume the role of a mining man and estimate cost of recovery, including an, evaluation of the most economic mining method, cost of supplies and labor, and again estimate a net cash flow. He must then determine amenability of ore to economic metallurgical methods, he must determine the legal status of the property involved and, after analysis of the specific situation, determine the best approach to a deal, After all of this he must sell it to the people who will put up the money and then put his deal together and sell it to the people who own the minerals, if that be necessary. Then he has to sit back, with crossed fingers and crossed legs wondering for some months, and in many cases even years, whether or not he is right. The expenditures required to open up a mine in this day of wild inflation are such that he has to be right, and the responsibilities are awesome.

The use of longwall/shortwall mining systems is under increasing scrutiny by the U. S, coal industry as a means to reverse the decline in productivity. The success of these mining systems depends to a great extent upon designing the system hardware to best suit local conditions. Of particular importance in this regard is designing the various elements of the total ground support system, including face, face end, and gate road supports, to accommodate local geologic conditions. This presentation centers on the problem of selecting the face support system. The existing geologic situation can influence the selection of the face support hardware in a variety' of ways. In general terms, these influences can be grouped into the following four areas: 1. The capacities required of the support unit; 2. The roof, coverage supplied by the support units; 3. The flexibility required of the support unit to meet changing geologic conditions; and 4. The required stiffness characteristics of the individual support units both vertically and horizontally. The following will center on the first area, i.e., the required d capacities of the support unit, in particular, the maximum required load density for a particular geologic situation.

The rising costs for and the possibility for limited availability of electrical energy are emphasizing the continual conflict faced in the selection of comminution circuits used in preparing ores for concentration, namely; capital cost vs. operating cost. Frequently, the circuit with the lowest capital cost is not the most efficient in the use of electrical power and wear resistant materials. The simplest circuit in terms of flow, pieces of equipment and capital cost is the single stage autogenous or partial autogenous circuit used to grinding primary crusher discharge or run of mine ore to the desired product size. (Fig. 1) From this circuit, complexity increases to multi-stage crushing circuits preparing feed for multi-stage grinding circuits. Fig. 2 showing a three stage rod mill ball mill arrangement is an example of a complex grinding circuit. Stage concentration further complicates the flow. Multi-stage circuits being the most expensive to install, often give the greatest operating flexibility and offer the best possibilities for the most efficient use of available power and wear resistant materials. Within available grinding circuits, other comparisons such as high speed vs. low speed mills, grate discharge vs. overflow discharge, metal liners vs. rubber liners, high charge vs. low charge, etc. all add to the conflict

"Diesel particulate matter (DPM) has been regulated by the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration since 2002 in underground metal and nonmetal mines. To demonstrate regulatory compliance, DPM samples must be collected and later analyzed by the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) 5040 standard method, but the FLIR Airtec DPM monitor can serve as a complementary engineering tool. The monitor is a handheld instrument that offers near-real-time measurements of elemental carbon (EC), which is a primary constituent of DPM. As part of an ongoing field study, the monitor was used to survey EC in an underground stone mine. This effort was aimed at determining spatial and temporal DPM variations in several key locations. The results of prolonged area monitoring—that is, lasting several hours — revealed that DPM concentrations were diluted substantially as air moved away from the primary production zone, but that concentrations could vary quite a bit in a single location from day to day and between seasons. DPM concentrations were generally lower in winter than in summer, which is consistent with increased natural ventilation airflows during winter. Using a modified sampling cassette, an attempt was also made to sensitize the Airtec monitor to allow for “spot-checking” of EC concentrations — that is, measurements made in several minutes. Preliminary field data showed that the sensitive cassette performed well in terms of providing accurate data that could be useful for rapid assessment of DPM. IntroductionDiesel particulate matter (DPM) is the solid fraction of the exhaust emissions from a diesel engine. It largely consists of elemental carbon (EC) and organic carbon (OC) (Birch, 2003). The World Health Organization International Agency for Research on Cancer classified diesel exhaust, including DPM, as a carcinogen (World Health Organization, 2012). It is believed to cause and/or exacerbate respiratory illness upon inhalation, deposition and retention in lung tissue. Because DPM exists in both the micro- and nanoparticulate ranges, it can bypass typical autoimmune defense mechanisms that keep larger particles out of the respiratory system (Ristovski et al., 2012)."

A procedure is presented for ranking hazardous waste sites for remedial decisions, and an example with application to mining waste sites is discussed. Typical contaminant concentrations are calculated from field data. Exposure indices that compare these measured concentrations with allowable limits are then computed. The limits are selected to protect both the health of humans (for both carcinogen and noncarcinogen effects) and the health of key organisms in the ecological food web. The additive exposure index for a site, defined as the sum of all contaminant-specific exposure indices, is then used in ranking the sites and assigning each a priority for remedial action. One key source of uncertainty in the process is the estimation of a typical site concentration from data that include values reported as "below certified reporting limit" (BCRL). This uncertainty is compounded in the additive exposure index and therefore may have a substantial effect on the assignment of remediation priority. A general approach is presented for incorporating consideration of BCRL data into uncertainty evaluation when assigning remediation priority designators to hazardous waste sites.

The Montana Talc ore body was discovered in 1983 in Montana's Gravelly Range, about 40 km (25 miles) south of Ennis. Initial drilling indicated a 910-kt (1-million st) ore body of high purity talc. Preliminary analyses on ore cuttings included chemical analysis, brightness measurements, and microscopic evaluations of the structure of the talc. Results indicated it was similar to talc currently being marketed from Montana and it would probably have good commercial value. Based on the positive test results, a test pit was made and a 180-t (200-st) sample of ore was mined. A portion of the ore was ground to various particle sizes and evaluated to determine its strengths, weaknesses, and other characteristics. The deposit is located close to the Cyprus Yellowstone deposit. It was therefore believed that Montana Talc ore may possess many of the same characteristics. Testing and analyses showed the talc to have a high purity and an extremely large surface area, even for Montanatype tales. The ore was also situated in a massive deposit, indicating low cost mining. While the lab analyses were encouraging, the true evidence would be obtained from commercial tests in the marketplace. About 91 t (100 st) of ore were ground to product specifications for pitch control, paint filler, and plastics filler. Consumers were contacted and requested to evaluate the sample talc products. A major trial for the talc as a pitch control agent was arranged at a Northeast paper mill. The trial indicated the new Montana Talc product performed as well or better than the current standard in the industry. In fact, due to a minor modification in the compaction process to make the transport of the talc easier, the product had substantially less dust than the currently used product. The operating people at the paper mill requested that management purchase this talc. Trials were also run at paint plants for use as a pigment filler. And the talc was fabricated into a number of plastics compounds. The initial product tests were largely positive and provided encouragement to proceed with the project. Different grinding mills were used and their performance evaluated. Significant data were generated by the custom grinders. They indicated how the Montana Talc ore ground and the particle size distributions produced at different grinding settings. Encouraged by the positive marketing tests, a prefeasibility study was commissioned. A talc grinding plant and mine plans were designed and capital and operating costs estimated. Initial economics showed an attractive return. The operating costs were among the lowest in the industry. The positive economics, along with the excellent results by the products in the marketing tests to the paper, paint, and plastics industries, led to the recommendation to proceed with the project. Plant construction began in June of 1985. The Montana Talc Co. (MTC) analyzed the data from the commercial tests. Based on the product's outstanding performance and the uniqueness of its high purity and platy structure, a strategy was developed to position the company as a premium talc supplier.

Mr. Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen, I'd like to take just a moment of your time before we examine the current position of the asbestos industry and its market outlook to take a searching look at the product itself. I feel that if we are to understand the problems that beset this basic mining and manufacturing industry and, more important, if we are to appreciate the solutions to these problems that I plan to put forward in a few moments' time, then we had better look at asbestos from the proper perspective. Asbestos has a unique combination of properties - properties not found in any other natural substance or man-made material. This has resulted in asbestos finding its way - in fact, being welcomed - into literally hundreds of applications.
