Introduction The mining industry has a poor public image. It is often perceived as a despoiler of the landscape and a polluter of the environment, and there is little recognition of societal needs for the raw materials and fuels that this industry produces. There are many reasons for this poor image, but an important one is that a substantial number of mining operations have caused significant damage to the environment. Many of these operations, particularly those that now are abandoned, continue to have an adverse impact, principally in the form of water pollution.1 In some cases, the damage caused by this pollution extends well beyond the immediate region around the mine. Chemical contamination of ground and surface waters can, and does, occur in nature when these waters flow through or over undisturbed, mineralized rock masses. However, the problem is greatly exacerbated by mining because the mining activities increase, by several orders of magnitude, the permeability and the surface area of rock that can be contacted by percolating water. Water flowing through either the mine workings or the waste rock dumps becomes contaminated. Pollution can also arise if leachate from tailings ponds enters either groundwater or surface waters. This leachate may contain chemicals used in processing the ore. The magnitude of the threat posed by mining wastes depends on the type of minerals in the deposit, and on the chemicals used to process the ore. The magnitude of the threat also depends on two other, site-specific factors. One is the volume of water flowing into the mine and through the dumps, which depends on rainfall patterns, topography, and whether the mine workings are surface or underground. The other is the proximity of the pollution source to groundwater or surface waters, which depends on both the climate and geology. These factors influence the concentration and the quantity of polluted water forming and reaching the receiving water. Mining activities present a potential problem of enormous scale. Vast amounts of rock are mined each year2 and, as noted above, substantial problems have arisen at some mine sites. These problems are usually exceedingly costly to address, and it is imperative that these mistakes not be repeated. There are indications that we can accomplish this goal; we now better understand the processes that cause pollution and have methods to prevent or contain it. In addition, in the past few decades society has started to recognize the need for all industries to operate in a manner that maximizes the health and safety of workers and the public and minimizes adverse environmental impacts. A variety of recently enacted federal and state laws regulating public health and environmental hazards reflect the increasing concern over these issues. Many statutes, such as the federal Clean Air Act and the Clean Water Act, encompass activities undertaken by the mining industry. Other laws, such as the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act, have been written to regulate specific hazards posed by this industry. At the present time, the federal government. through the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and several state governments, are preparing new regulations specifically tailored to control the disposal of mining wastes. Given the magnitude of the potential environmental and health risks posed by disposal of mining wastes and the regulatory costs to the mining industry (both of which are due to the tremendous volume of waste generated), it is especially important that regulators have a good understanding of the different types of mining wastes and the risks they are likely to pose in various geographic and climatic circumstances. Only then can a regulatory program be designed with suitable procedures and substantive criteria to protect the environment and ensure compliance, while avoiding unnecessary or wasteful expenditures. California has long enjoyed a large, active mining industry. Today it produces a wide range of mineral commodities. The revenue from production of non-fuel minerals in California ($2.85 billion in 1988) greatly exceeds that of any other state. About a third of this revenue is from the production of inert sand, gravel and crushed stone. However, the remainder is from the production of a wide range of materials. These include boron minerals, rare earths, asbestos, talc and pyrophyllite, and gold. In earlier decades, an even broader range of minerals was produced, including mercury, copper, lead, zinc, and barite. There are acute environmental problems at some of these early mine sites. Because in 1987 the state of California was engaged in a revision of its regulations for mining waste disposal, the legislature commissioned a study by researchers at the University of California at Berkeley to investigate and review: the magnitude of the problem posed by these wastes, • the best feasible control measures available for waste management and disposal, • the problems of abatement and cleanup at so-called "problem" mine sites, • the current regulations imposed on mining waste disposal by various federal, state, and local agencies and the effectiveness of these regulations. This paper summarizes the principal findings from this study (Mining Waste Study, 1988). The lessons from this investigation are likely to be of general interest because of the diversity of mineral products produced, and the wide range of geographic and climatic conditions encountered. The acute problems seen at some of the older mines are typical of the western United States, and teach useful lessons on strategies that should be implemented at new mines to prevent recurrences of these problems.

Automation and robotics are the keys to new intelligent autonomous mining systems that can remove operators from hazardous and stressful mining environments and provide the tools for greater productivity. This paper presents the components necessary for an Intelligent Task Control System (ITCS) for machine control in dynamic unstructured mining environments. In particular, the design details of a controller for an automated excavator are developed. The excavator controller uses fuzzy logic to interpret forces and torques gathered from a wrist mounted force/ torque sensor during the excavation process. This approach enables the transfer of human heuristics and expert knowledge to the controller. Several excavation tests using the fuzzy logic controller are described. These experimental results represent the first step toward an integrated approach that uses force/torque, vision and other sensor data to perform generic tasks in uncertain mining environments.

Surfactants are used to control the interfacial properties of the gas-liquid and liquid-solid inter- faces inflotation. This paper investigates the dynamic adsorption of surfactants at the gas-liquid intelface. The dynamic adsorption process was modeled by considering the surfactant mass transfer to the gas-liquid interface by dimion and the Langmuir and Frumkin adsorption isotherms. The numerical computation was applied to solve the non-linear governing equations. The dynamic adsorption was measured in tenns of the dynamic surface tension using the pen- dant drop method. The theoretical modek were compared against the experimental data obtained with non-ionic (Dowfroth 250) and ionic (sodium dodecylbenzene sulfate, SDBS) surfactants. The theoretical results agreed well with the erperimental data for SDBS, but not for Dowfrother 250, especially for the initial stage. Reasons for the variation in results are given in the paper.

Epithermal Ag-Au deposits form at low to moderate temperatures in near-surface environments. Historically, these deposits have been the source of high-grade ores. Increases in the market prices for gold and silver make lower-grade ores economically viable when available in large tonnages. Both the high-grade and bulk-tonnage ores are a consequence of the same processes, and general models of epithermal systems can be useful in the search for new precious-metal resources. A detailed study of deposits at Round Mountain, Nevada; Balei, Russia; Creede, Colorado; Guanajuato, Mexico; and Chanarcillo, Chile, indicates that the hydrodynamics of the fluid systems as determined by fracture geometries, the permeability, and composition of the host rocks are the key factors in the creation of both high-grade and bulk-tonnage epithermal deposits. End-member models that explain the range of observed deposit characteristics are: (1) the hot-springs deposition model; (2) the stacked-cell convection model (where mineral deposition occurs laterally along the interface of two partially separated fluid reservoirs); and, (3) the closed-cell convection model (where deposition occurs in vertical zones due to the relatively unimpeded vertical flow of hydrothermal fluids). Boiling and fluid mixing appear to be agents of precious-metal deposition with the self-sealing of the hydrothermal system being an important adjunct to boiling. Imaginative application of model concepts in exploration has led and can lead to the discovery of new high-grade and/or bulk-tonnage precious-metal deposits.

The risk that water quality will be degraded by mining activity can be evaluated using risk analysis techniques. Water quality impacts can occur where water-rock interactions with tailings, waste rock, or leached ore lead to increased loading of constituents into surface or groundwater. Constituent loads contributed by mining facilities are determined by the migration route and chemical evolution of mine water. Mass load contributions from mines can be determined by estimating the prototype pore water in contact with mining waste, predicting the rate and timing of flow, assessing the degree of geochemical attenuation, and modeling chemical mixing with natural surface or groundwater. Mining facility siting and design measures can alter the chemical evolution of mine water by varying the quantity or quality of flow. Stochastic risk management techniques provide a powerful tool for quantitatively identifying the environmental consequences of various siting and design alternatives.

The objective of this article is to discuss the fundamentals for determining the value of a limestone reserve or operation. The general step-by-step procedure, while prudent, is subject to the various site-specific issues that influence the valuation calculation. The most common methods for determining fair market value of mining lands are: comparable sales, operational analysis, and royalty analysis. An overview of typical eastern limestone mines (both quarries and underground) is presented. Specifically, properties in West Virginia and Alabama are reviewed and the sample methodologies and valuation calculations are presented.

Environmental impacts from acidic mine drainage are growing national concerns that are particularly acute in the headwaters of the Rocky Mountain region. In the Black Hills of South Dakota, approximately one thousand mines are inactive or abandoned, most of them in the headwaters of major drainages. This paper examines the Bear Butte Creek basin, a heavily mineralized watershed with significant historical mining impacts and a surface gold mine permitted in 1997. The watershed loses its surface discharge to swallow holes in the karstic Madison Limestone. The integrity of the aquatic ecosystem was monitored with a suite of site-specific bio-indicators. Stream surveys covered the entire reach of Bear Butte Creek from near its headwaters to the swallow holes in the Madison aquifer. Data from the stream surveys, water-quality sampling, and bio-indicator surveys clearly showed that water-quality impacts are limited mainly to Strawberry Creek and to the area of Bear Butte Creek near and downstream of the town of Galena.

5.1 TECHNOLOGY FOR INJECTING GROUT INTO BOREHOLES The grouting of fractured rock aquifers is carried out in separate stopes' whose size is determined by the hydro¬stratigraphy and the hydrogeologic properties of the rocks. The number of grouting stopes required depends on the number of intervals in the hydrogeological section. Each grouting stope can include one or several aquifers. Com¬bining several water-producing strata into one stope is pos¬sible only when the values of their permeability coefficients are very similar. In order to achieve efficiency, as many aquifers as possible are included in each stope. In practice, the length of a grouting stope in a borehole usually ranges within 10 to 40 m, but occasionally up to 100 m or more. When conducting grouting operations through boreholes drilled from the face of underground workings, the stope's size can be determined by the thick¬ness of each fractured zone (fault) or by the length of the hole if the entire rock is fractured. Injecting grout into separate intervals of fractured rock can be done from the bottom to the top with ascending stopes or from the top to the bottom with descending stopes. Injection from bottom to top is always preferred. Injection also can be accomplished in separate fractured permeable horizons in the section. The STG integrated grouting method is based on the use of packer and injection equipment and technological schemes that facilitate injection in highly isolated fractured aquifers. For this purpose STG has developed a standard series of packers. 5.1.1 INJECTING GROUT THROUGH BOREHOLES DRILLED FROM THE SURFACE Grout can be injected according to one of four techno¬logical schemes depending on the depth of the fractured aquifers, their hydrogeologic properties and the availability of grout injection equipment if the area is remote (Fig. 43). In the first and most preferred technological scheme (1), the grout is injected from the bottom up with ascending stopes. When this scheme is employed, grouting holes are drilled to the entire projected depth based on the field investigations injection tubes is installed above the top of the first hydrostratigraphic unit to be grouted. This scheme al¬lows the grout to be injected only into the permeable stra¬tum or strata isolated by the packer near the bottom of the hole; it precludes the need to clean or redrill the hole before injecting grout into the next overlying stope. This ascending stope scheme is preferred because of its simplicity and ef¬ficiency. It is used in most of the grouting of saturated fractured rock for the purpose of isolating aquifers while excavating deep mine shafts in the USSR. The second technological scheme (II in Fig. 43) injects the grout in sequence from top to bottom with descending stopes. Injection under this scheme is accomplished through the hermetically-sealed mouth of the hole. It is most advis¬able to grout with descending stopes in saturated fractured rock wherein the aquifers constitute thick networks of frac¬tures. Under these conditions it is practically impossible to drill a grout hole to the entire depth of the underground workings due to the large production rate of ground water. In conducting isolation operations with descending stopes, additional work (relative to ascending stopes) is necessary to drill out the grout in order to create and inject the next stope. As a result, the total amount of drilling required to drill out grout can even exceed the volume of drilling of original rock. Consequently it is advisable to use this inefficient scheme only for injecting grout into holes that contain prolific frac¬tured aquifers at depths less than 150 to 200 m. The third and fourth technological schemes (III and IV in Fig. 43) are used in the selective grouting of separate aquifers. For example, these methods would be applied when a grout hole is drilled to its entire depth, wherein grouting of the upper aquifers must be done first so that the sinking of the first shaft can begin prior to deeper grouting. The third technological scheme is used for the selective injection of grout into an aquifer with a thickness of up to 5 m. For this work the DAU-1-2 removable dual packer is installed. It is lowered into the borehole on an injection pipeline. For aquifers with thicknesses of more then 5 m, the selective injection of the grout is carried out according to the fourth technological scheme; a combination of the DAU-2 hydrodynamic plug and the DAU-1 packing device is used. In order to implement this injection scheme, the DAU-2 hydro-dynamic plug is installed at the bottom of the fractured aquifer and the DAU-1 packer is installed at the top of the aquifer.

As part of the waste characterisation program to address site reclamation, WISMUT GmbH initiated 56 columns operated as large-scale humidity cell tests. The columns were initiated to assess the acid generation characteristics of waste rock from 14 waste rock piles distributed around the site. Of the 56 tests, 11 are ongoing and have been operational in excess of 160 weeks. The results to date from these long-term tests are surnrnarised. In particular, the methods for, and importance of, establishing the availability of the carbonate neutralisation potential and acid generation potential respectively, are discussed. Geochemical controls on uranium, and the conformity between the geochemical models MINTEQA2 and EQ3/6 in assessing these controls are discussed. Testing indicates that waste rock with an MS-NP:AP ratio in excess of about 2.7 should result in net neutral pH conditions.

This paper identifies the components of belt conveyor shifting force as a vertical force, Pv, a lateral force, Ph, and a longitudinal force, Pl. A method for estimating these forces is proposed that relates each of their values to the properties of the conveyor structure and rails, the shifting operation parameters, and other site-specific conditions. The effect of this force on the shifter behavior is analyzed, and guidelines are developed for selecting a suitable shifter. As well, other equipment requirements for the shifting operation are discussed.

Rock mass classification systems are core elements of tunneling and empirical mine design worldwide. The Bauxite division of S&B Industrial Minerals S.A. decided to implement a rock mass classification system in order to provide mining engineers and supervisors of the underground mines, with guidelines of stability performance and with a complementary tool for the selection of the appropriate tunnel support. The back analysis system employed is based on visual observation of especially selected underground mine sites, representative of all rock types. This fact combined with the failure or success of the already existing support system, constitute the fundamental part of the work undertaken. The paper is divided into three main parts. In the first part the classification methods of Q, RMR89 and GSI are presented and the advantages and disadvantages of each method in connection with underground mining are indicated. RMR89 and GSI are conclusively selected for use, the main criteria for the selection being, the simplicity in use and the competency of the support system suggested for each rock mass category. The second part points out the methodology for measurements, the practical difficulties encountered during this process and the guiding principles followed, in order to avoid these problems. In the third part, the final conclusion of this project is demonstrated and the different rock mass categories are presented with their relative support recommendations, as they were applied and tested in all phases of the bauxite mines? exploitation. The generated methodology is being implemented by the site mining engineers, for validation and potential improvement.

1. Introduction This is a report on applications of the earth pressure type balanced shield tunneling projects executed under narrow streets on soft alluvial layers in Japan. Japan is a long island country surrounded by the sea. Steep mountain ranges run along the archipelago and numerous rivers originate from the mountains, leaving only limited areas of flat land along the upper and middle reaches of the streams. The majority of cities in Japan are on soft alluvial layers. Alluvium represents an extremely complex soil formation, sections bordering diluvium being characterized by sharp undulations. Various difficulties are therefore encountered in shield tunneling work undertaken in such ground conditions. Particularly, at work sites lying in an unstable, waterbearing layer with high permeability, shield excavation becomes utterly impossible, hampered by large amounts of underground water as well as land collapsing caused by the water. Even when work can somehow be accomplished by using chemical grouting or by lowering ground water level, which require extra expenses and time, undesirable effects such as ground surface settlement are unavoidable in projects undertaken in the past. The newly developed method allows safe and accurate tunnel excavation at normal speed and without giving any adverse effects on buildings above, even under such unstable ground conditions. An outline of this new method was announced at the "International Tunnel Symposium '78" held in Tokyo, and the method has since been employed in a number of tunneling projects in this country. There is currently some pessimism over mixing of net-acid-neutralizing (NAN) and net-acid-generating (NAG) rock to obtain indefinite near-neutral seepage from mined-rock piles. This is due in large part to the lack of well- documented, successful cases of blending and layering, and to the knowledge of unsuccessful attempts. Past work often defined a potentially successful mix in terms of the ratio of net-acid-neutralizing rock to net-acid-generating rock. For example, one case study indicated the bulk pile-wide ratio was approximately 3: 1. Since this exceeded a common ratio used in acid-base accounting, no acidic drainage was predicted. However, acidic drainage appeared within two years. A large part of the ambiguity in mixing arises from attempts to predict success based on a ratio. This paper looks in detail at simple discrete-zone mixing, where at least one truckload of NAG rock is placed in a particular location with no further rehandling or dozing. The lack of acidic drainage in this scenario is dependent on the intervening distance between the discrete NAG zones, along flowpaths occupied by NAN rock. Calculations show that the bulk mixing ratio of a mined-rock pile is not an accurate indication of whether near-neutral drainage can be maintained. For example, a pile with a bulk ratio around 300: 1 could still release some acidic drainage. Calculations also show that the minimum separation distance of the NAG zones (L) can be so great, even with typical NAG and NAN rock, that the mixed pile could safely contain only a few percent of NAG rock, which would not be sufficient for many minesites with NAG rock. The comparison to a more elaborate, computer-based statistical model shows that the simple discrete-zone approach will provide a reliable yes-no indication of whether any acidic drainage will leave a pile. However, predictions of whether combined downstream drainages will be acidic depend on numerous site-specific physical and geochemical factors within and below a pile that cannot be modelled in a general way, like the number of flowpaths and the nature of their intersections.

The Beaconsfield underground gold mine is one of only a few new Australian gold projects to come into operation in the current climate of low gold prices. Up to 200,000 tonnes per annum of Tasmania Reef ore will be mined and processed over a minimum eight-year life to a depth of 900 metres below surface. The Tasmania Reef is a gold-bearing quartz-carbonate-sulphide vein occupying an old fault structure which transgresses a series of sedimentary beds. The sulphides are predominantly pyrite with lesser arsenopyrite, and also minor copper as chalcopyrite. Drilling to date below this level clearly indicates that the high-grade orebody is open at depth and that the mine life should be extended significantly over time. Since redevelopment of Beaconsfield mine began in the 1980's, extensive exploration has identified a resource of 1.5 million tonnes within a 450 vertical metre zone beneath the old workings, which extended more than 450 metres below the surface. Installation of an 800 litre per second capacity pump station 180 metres below the surface has been critical in overcoming one of the major hurdles experienced during previous operations in the early 1900's. A multi-stage development program, designed to bring the mine into full production, and incorporating construction of the on-site gold treatment plant incorporating bacterial oxidation, has now been completed. Prior to execution of a detailed engineering design of the Mintek-BacTech bacterial oxidation process, a programme of bacterial oxidation testwork was completed to provide a basis for fixing the process design criteria. Conventional methods of controlling abandoned mine fires include: loading out, inundation, fire barriers, flushing, and surface sealing. This paper describes a proposed fire-control technique utilizing a new explosive fragmentation method. An impervious barrier is created by using explosive energy and strategic emplacement in boreholes drilled from the surface. Blast round design, average fragment size, and impermeability of the fragmentation barrier are discussed. This barrier, created by the blasted floor rock, could also be used to fill in the open space in abandoned mines for subsidence prevention or control.

West Virginia, although having adequate solar insolation, has witnessed very little actual solar development to date. The reasons for this lack of development are varied, but the primary obstacles to future development appear to be the absence of state-level policies and regulations promoting growth in the solar industry. West Virginia possesses large tracts of under-utilized land throughout the state created by previous mountaintop mining operations that could theoretically be re-purposed for solar farm development. Accomplishing this task will require not only revisions to the current legislation, but also acceptance by utility companies, landowners, and mining companies. Solar developers will need confidence that they can secure revenue from the electricity and Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) generated by solar projects. Additionally, solar companies will need assurance they will be protected from any non-related environmental liabilities that could arise in the future. The primary avenue in bringing significant solar development to West Virginia will come through large corporate clients demanding or partnering with utility companies for incorporation of solar options into their energy portfolio to help meet established sustainability goals. This scenario has been witnessed in other states where a large client demands renewable options. Solar development could also represent a means through which mine operators might alleviate some of their reclamation and bonding obligations; where the landowner could supplement income from their underutilized land holdings; and where displaced miners could be repurposed in solar installation/maintenance jobs. Utilizing data from the West Virginia Permit Database, this report identifies several mine sites that hold potential for solar development in the future. INTRODUCTION The diversification of energy sources in the United States (US) has seen major shifts during the past decade resulting from: • A sudden abundance of low-cost natural gas becoming available through advanced horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing techniques. • Incentive-driven policies leading to new development in alternative energy. • The emergence of renewable energy sources, proliferated by state and federal level incentives and falling capital costs. Coal was once the primary low-cost fuel source for the generation of electricity in the US for most of the last century, providing approximately 50 percent of the total production capacity. However, within the past decade lower-cost natural gas has overtaken coal as the primary source of fuel used in electricity generation, and renewable sources have steadily grown to account for approximately 10 percent of the overall mix.

"Increasing worldwide energy demands, coupled with desires for cleaner energy, have led to greater research of renewable energies. Strongly weather-dependent energy sources, e.g. solar and wind energy, are unable to provide a constant control energy to withstand the fluctuation of the extensive power systems during peak hours. The pump storage plant Nant de Drance in Switzerland will not only have the capacity of a nuclear power plant, producing 900 MW, but will also combine the environmental aspect and the demand for controlled energy. Nant de Drance is one of the pioneer projects for upcoming energy challenges and serves as a model for future pump storage plants. This paper focuses on the planning process and the project execution of interdisciplinary large-scale projects such as Nant de Drance, including project related data handling, communication systems and project handling skills. Furthermore, the paper discusses mining excavation in the context of large scale projects and their regional environmental challenges, e.g. high alpine rock mass on the site of Nant de Drance. PROJECT BACKGROUND Project Overview Nant de Drance is a 900 MW pump storage plant located in the Swiss Alps. To provide such a high energy storage, six turbines (reversible Francis type), each with a capacity of 150 MW, were installed. Due to the efficiency factor of 80% the pump storage plant is able to provide an energy production of 2500 GWh per annum. Construction of the pump storage plant, which has been selected as “Major Tunneling Project of the Year” in 2014 by NCE and ITA-AITES, will be completed over 10 years. Therefore, the project has been divided in six major phases outlined below: - Launch: 2008 - Access Gallery: 2010 – 2012 - Excavation KMA, KTR: 2011 – 2014 - Concreting KMA, KTR: 2014 – 2016 - Installation of HEM equipment: 2014 – 2018 - Tests & entry into service: 2017 – 2018 Figure 1 outlines the single process phases of the project. For the construction of the shafts, galleries and caverns, 1.7 million m³ of metamorphic rock with sedimentary origin (mica schist & paragneiss of the massif „Aiguilles Rouges“) were excavated. A tunnel network with a total length of 15 km was created. The machine cavern measures 194 m long, 32 m wide and 52 m tall."

Philippines is a country that is richly endowed in mineral wealth. In 1988, Climax Arimco Mining Corp. (CAMC) geologists found the Dinkidi porphyry gold-copper deposit in Nueva Vizcaya province. It is the most significant mineral discovery in that country in recent times. To date, the company has defined indicated resources of 124 Mt (136 million st) of 1-g/t (0.029-oz/st) gold and 0.4% copper. This includes a high-grade core of 7.9 Mt (8.7 million st) of 6-g/t (0.175-oz/st) gold equivalent. Total contained metal is 124.4 t (4 million oz) of gold and 499 kt (1.1 billion lb) of copper. Dinkidi's discovery resulted from initial geologic reconnaissance and recognition of the intrusive complex that is exposed at surface and anomalous in its topographic expression. This was followed by systematic exploration. This includes extensive gradient array induced polarization (IP), ground magnetics, geochemical sampling and diamond drilling. This later defined a further 16 satellite porphyry targets in the Didipio region. Climax was been granted a Financial and Technical Assistance Agreement contract with the Philippine government. It allows 100% foreign ownership of mining projects. After four years of negotiations, Climax was the first company to have such an application granted. Some 120 applications from numerous international mining companies are waiting for approval following implementation of new Philippine Mining Act of 1995. Exploration history Didipio is located 200 km (125 miles) north of Manila at an elevation of about 700 m (2,300 ft) in the remote Sierra Madre mountains. This region remains mostly unexplored. The property is accessed by 25 km (15 miles) of logging track from the town of Cabarroguis, Quirino. The area experiences an average rainfall of about 3,000 mm (118 in.) a year. Most of it falls during the July-to-November typhoon season. Didipio was first recognized as a gold province in the 1970s when native Ifugao and Ilongot hunters discovered alluvial gold in the region. The region had been prospected over the years by local companies. They were mostly prospecting for alluvial gold. However, in 1988, Climax Mining geologists identified the potential of an obscure razorback ridge protruding from the alluvial valley floor. This ridge, later named Dinkidi by Climax, was the site of several small- scale tunnels. Locals had mined narrow quartz stockwork veining and sluiced soft argillic alteration zones, using irrigation canals and sluice boxes to catch free gold.

The paper describes the arrangements for the casting, curing and handling at the casting yard, of the concrete segments for the lining of the UK half of the tunnel, and the plant used for the handling of these linings at the construction site. An outline of the tunnel boring machines being used is given, with particular reference to lining handling and erection, and the extensive muck disposal systems installed. A general progress update will be given to the conference.

Following the first longwall excavation at a deep-cover gas well site, the pre-mining modeling prediction of longwallinduced casing deformations in the fully cemented production casing were in excellent agreement with post-mining Caliper survey results. However, after second panel mining, the post-mining Caliper survey revealed a large plastic deformation near the top of the Pittsburgh Seam. The focus of this paper is to identify the possible cause of such an anomalous deformation. Very high longwall-induced casing stress near a thick claystone layer at 23 feet above the Pittsburgh seam horizon was identified as the primary cause. Leaving the production casing uncemented or using softer cementing material between intermediate and production casings is identified as the best practice.
