Since the early 1950's exploration in the Yukon Territory, Canada, has been confined largely to Selwyn basin where at least five large stratiform or massive sulfide Pb-Zn deposits have been discovered. The five ore bodies total nearly 100 million tons of 10-16% combined Pb-Zn with 1-3 oz./ton Ag. The only deposit currently in production is the Anvil Mine operating at 8,000 tons per day. Beginning in 1972, exploration in the Mackenzie Mountains, east of Selwyn basin and west of Mackenzie arch, resulted in finds of Mississippi Valley type Zn-Pb mineralization in a belt of Proterozoic and Lower Paleozoic carbonate rocks (Figure 1). Four districts have been located and intensive exploration by numerous Canadian and Arnerican mining companies is currently in progress over a length of 400 miles in the carbonate belt. The consensus is that a major new Zn-Pb province may be taking shape.

The Nevada Barite industry has experienced a 277% growth over the last five years with a total production of 2,542,000 tons. Total production prior to 1970 approximates 2,700,000 tons dating back to 1907 Annual production, as can be seen in Table 1, has increased from 192,000 tons in 1971 to 723,000 tons in 1975. During this same period U.S production has increased from 825,000 tons to 1,056,000 tons. Nevada is now the leading producer with 69% of the market. The increase in the Nevada barite production is, of course, directly related to the increased demand for weight material coupled with the lack of other sources and the relative economic advantage of the Nevada barite, A significant tonnage of Nevada barite is utilized in the non-oil well market, principally at FMC's barite chemical plant at Modesto, California; however the growth has been in the oil well market.

Public Law 95-87 enacted by Congress in 1977 and subsequent regulations require coal mine operators to predict the effects of mining on the environment prior to the start of mining. Prediction of the effects of mining on the local groundwater system is a difficult task due to its complex nature and the lack of detailed published information. An investigation of water level fluctuations in five we1 1s positioned over three consecutively mined longwall panels was initiated in conjunction with an intensive subsidence monitoring program. The purpose of this work was to provide detailed information which could be used to predict certain hydrologic effects of longwall mining in the Northern Appalachian Coal Region. The results of this case study indicate that water level fluct- uations in the local ground-water system above longwall panels is associated with subsidence and that the static water level will generally re- establish at or near the pre-mining elevation after mining is completed.

Paper presents project results investigating current techniques for dragline wire rope removal and the development of less hazardous means of performing the task. The cannon is the most prevalent method used in American surface mines. A cannon test program was conducted that used 40-and 50-grain primer cord to establish force produced using a 56-pound projectile. Socketlwedges were separated to establish separation force data. Two alternative removal methods, pendulum ram and portable hydraulic pusher, were developed and tested. Both provide sufficient force to effect separations under normal conditions on draglines with up to 78- cubic yard buckets.

Barneys Canyon Mine is a 1.8 million t.p.y. gold heap leach operation near Salt Lake City, Utah. The gold recovery plant has been operating since September of 1989. Carbon elution is done at atmospheric pressure with a high temperature caustic solution. No cyanide is used in the process. Operating experience is discussed.

Introduction The urgency of further development of our domestic energy resources becomes more apparent every day. The production capability of existing facilities, taken in the aggregate, declines perhaps 10% per year; imported energy is expensive if available at all; conservation helps reduce demand but eventually will reach a point of diminishing return; new energy sources are promising but past experience, as with nuclear power, teaches us lead times are long and success is not assured. To approach the energy future rationally, it is essential to have some idea of the size of the nation's remaining energy resources, their characteristics, and the degree of uncertainty involved in their estimates. Resources are, of course, only one end of a long chain leading to energy supply to the ultimate consumer. They are an essential element, however, and the only one not under society's control. Given that the resources and a national will to produce the energy exist, it is possible to convert the resources to supply in, generally, an environmentally reasonable manner. However, the process of developing supply takes time. Government must permit access to the resource, and remunerative prices and further evolution of technlogy are required. This paper does not deal with these essentials, but they must not be forgotten. This discussion is limited to coal, oil, natural gas and gas liquids, uranium, and oil shale. Other energy sources are discussed elsewhere in this issue. Crude Oil Conventional crude oil resources are of greatest concern today, given our dependence on imported oil and its rapidly rising price. Estimates of oil originally in place (OOIP) range from 619 billion bbl to 1,094 billion bbl, differing by almost a factor of two (Table 1). This is surprising because the U.S. is a mature petroleum province with over 120 billion bbl produced and over 400 billion bbl OOIP discovered. Differences in the estimates involve differences in the experience of the various estimators, the interpretation of present geologic information and historical statistics, the methodology, and probably the extent (i.e., water depths) for which offshore resources are included. The range shown for the estimate of a given estimator appears to be primarily due to geologic uncertainty. This uncertainty can be measured by taking the ratio of the low and of the high estimate to the expected estimate for that information source. The low estimates range from 0.85 to 0.87 of their respective values. The high estimates range from 1.18 to 1.27 of the expected values. In all cases the high estimate is further from the expected value than the low,

High resolution airborne magnetic and radiometric data have been shown to optimize exploration for epithermal gold deposits in the vicinity of Charters Towers, northeastern Queensland. The radiometric data allow extrapolation of poorly outcropping geology to provide a cost-effective mapping technique, even at exploration scales (eg. 1:25,000). At a regional scale (eg. 1 : 100,000) the magnetic data reflect the regional tectonics and divide the area into domains for the application of different genetic models. For example: 1. the Ravenswood Batholith is characterized by multiple intrusions dating from Ordovician to Permian age. The polarity of the magnetic anomalies implies an age for the intrusions and indicates a deposit style for exploration. 2. extensional and wrench tectonics along the northern margin of the Drummond Basin are interpreted from the magnetic data and indicate favourable blocks for detailed exploration. Genetic exploration models may be tested in favourable environments by the recognition of geophysical signatures. These signatures reflect structural, lithological and alteration patterns arising from controls on ore deposits and can be applied at regional or detailed scales.

Groundwater inflow and impacts have become major aspects in the permitting and operation of many gold mines. First, the hydrothermal or placer genesis of many of the orebodies being investigated or produced today almost guarantees that mines will be "wet", involving groundwater control as part of operations. Second, the style of ore deposition a1 so often involves a1teration of the host rock, resulting in relatively weak, low permeabi1ity materials that require extensive groundwater pressure control for stable mining. Third, the location of many mines in arid areas guarantees that impacts on water resources will be matters of key focus during permitting and operation. However, groundwater control and protection is a technically difficult area and often involves managerial decisions and activities that do not fit comfortably into traditional mining. In an attempt to overcome some of these difficulties, this paper provides a guide to mine managers and hydrologists as to appropriate strategies for designing, setting up, operating, and evaluating groundwater programs at gold mines that get the job done and are cost effective.

The performance characteristics of a multigravity separator for the recovery of heavy minerals of lead, zinc, copper and silver from a lead rougher-flotation concentrate were studied. Factorially designed experiments were carried out on three operating variables, i.e., the amount of wash water, the drum inclination and the drum rpm, of a multigravity separator. The experiments were carried out at two levels of each variable. With the experimental data, regression equations were developed for different metal grades and recoveries. The analysis revealed that drum speed has a major influence in determining the heavy-metal grade and recovery. Drum inclination is the next most important variable, with the amount of wash water being the least important. A concentrate containing 40% lead, 9.4% zinc, 1.5% copper and 1,400ppm silver was obtained with recoveries of 74.8%, 65.9%, 64.1% and 53.2%, respectively. Finally, the predicted values of grades and recoveries at intermediate levels are compared to actual experimental data to test the validity of the equations developed.

The Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago (MSDGC) serves an area of approximately 860 square miles and collects and processes used water from the city of Chicago and 116 surrounding communities. As a public agency, the MSDGC -Serves a population equivalent to 10 million people which is composed of 5.5 million people and an industrial wasteload equivalent to an additional 4-1/2 million people. -Provides 400 miles of intercepting sewers and tunnels ranging in diameter from 12 inches to 24 feet. -Operates 71 miles of navigable waterways and channels conncecting the Atlantic Ocean and the Great Lakes with the Gulf of Mexico and 6,000 miles of inland waterways. -Maintains the largest water reclamation plant in the world. -Processes 1,380,000,000 of used water daily and removes approximately 1,000 dry tons of organic solids each day. -Has spent approximately 700 million dollars in capital improvements to date, and will require expenditures in excess of 3 billion dollars (including over one-half billion dollars in tunnels) to meet existing federal and state water quality standards.

Since the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA) was passed in 1977, coal mine reclamation has been restricted from utilizing bluff-1ike features in permanent reclamation. This restriction is based on those provisions of SMCRA which require the elimination of all highwalls. In 1987, the Wyoming Mi ni ng Association began an effort to acquire the ability for coal mines to utilize bluffs in permanent reclamation for the purpose of enhancing the post-mining land use. The regulatory reform approach being uti1ized includes formation of a work group with members from industry, government, agriculture, and environmental organizations to prepare a proposal. Advantages of this approach are discussed.

Re1iabl e monitoring a1ong an underground mine belt line is of great concern because of combustibles, electrical apparatus, and friction. Belt entries are strategically located where a fire can have rapid and disastrous consequences. This paper reviews conventional distributed temperature sensing systems based on resistive, thermistor, and thermocouple effects. These are shown to provide limited benefits. A new system tested by the U.S. Bureau of Mines based on fiber optics and time domain reflectrometry, promises much better temperature and spatial resolution, faster response, inexpensive cable, longer distance, and comprehensive data analysis. Test results in a small, controlled, in-mine fire are given.

This is a detailed report of construction experience of a tunnel built by a shield of rectangular cross section with reinforced concrete segments. In case of tunneling by a rectangular shield, there were the following problems to be overcom by technical developments; (1) structural joints between segments, (2) complexity in erector handling, (3) exact steering operation of shield and perfect filling of tail void left around the lining erected. Such rectangular shape of cross section has various advantages comparing the conventional circular shape as follows; (1) effective utilization of excavated space, (2) greater overburden depth, (3) stability of lining against unbalanced earth pressure caused by neighbouring construction.

Sluiceboxes which are designed and operated as recommended from our recent research can provide much higher concentration ratios than most other gravity concentrators (up to 50,000: 1) at very high overall placer gold recoveries (95-99%). They are also very reliable, inexpensive and simple to operate. A sluice­box is a rectangular flume containing riffles on matting, through which a dilute slurry of water and gravel flows. However, sluiceboxes operating under ideal conditions are actually cen­trifugal concentrators whose riffles overturn ribbons of slurry to form vortices. At the bottom of these vortices, centrifugal and gravitational forces combine to drive gold particles into matting (figure 1).

The construction involved in the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), Contract No. lK0011 (K-1), encompassed some 2,621 meters of single track parallel tube rapid transit tunnels, 335 meters of cut-cover subway station and appurtenant ventilation structures at each end, and a fan shaft at approximately the mid point of the tunnels. The construction contract was awarded June 7, 1974 to a Joint Venture consisting of Intercounty Construction Corporation, Hyattsville, Maryland, and S $ M Constructors, Inc., Solon, Ohio. The former being responsible for performing the cut and cover construction, and the latter being charged with constructing the running tunnels and fan shaft at their mid point. (See Fig. 1) The problems of mining and supporting, the 183 meters of twin tunnels just east of Court House Square Station, by unique mixed face and soft ground mining methods is the main subject of this report, although a general review of the tunnels in their entirety, as well as the geology encountered in the excavations, is presented to give a better overall setting for the problems encountered. An extensive series of linear and rotary cutting tests were run in soft and medium strength rocks at the Earth Mechanics Institute of the Colorado School of Mines to investigate the possibility of very high speed mechanical excavation for tunnel, raise, and shaft boring. The results of these tests demonstrate that cutter penetrations of 38.1 mm (1.5 inch) and cut spacings up to 228.6 mm (9 inch) are possible in such rock without exceeding the bearing capabilities of the cutters. It was also demonstrated in vertical boring tests that continuous excavation rates up to 38.1 m/hr (125 ft/hr) can be achieved with state-of-the-art technology provided sufficient thrust and torque is available. A predictor model for soft rocks was also developed using the test data. Analysis of this model shows that the errors between the predicted and observed cutter normal loads appear to be independent of cutter diameter, tip width, cut spacing, and depth of penetration. This suggests that the structure of the model is correct with respect to these variables. An analysis of the coefficients in the model was also made and a correlation found between the principal coefficient and Unconfined Compressive Strength. The second coefficient in the model was found to be similar in magnitude to rock properties such as Brazilian Tensile Strength, Shear Strength and Point Load Index.

The total energy demand in the United States increased about 4 per cent annually during the 1960's 1 and is expected to increase at the same rate during this decade. Z Fuel oil growth in the 1960's was only Z per cent per year until 1968, but it increased to 8 per cent in 1969 and 11 per cent in 1970. Fuel oil demand is expected to grow at a 6 per cent rate through the 1970's. Part of this rapid increase in demand has been caused by restrictions placed on the sulfur content of fuels. High sulfur coal can no longer be burned in many parts of the country and has been replaced by low sulfur fuel oil. An insufficient supply of natural gas has also contributed to fuel oil demand. Air pollution regulations have not only caused an increase in fuel oil consumption, but they have also caused a reduction of sulfur content in residual fuel oils. Current regulations call for 1 per cent maximum sulfur content fuels over much of the country. Sulfur contents of fuels are limited to 0. 3 per cent in certain areas on the east and west coasts. Sulfur in residual fuel oils from high sulfur imported crude oil is reduced to 1 per cent currently. However, sulfur reduction to 0. 3 per cent is difficult and expensive.4 As a result, refiners may be hard pressed to supply the market for low sulfur fuel oil. Indonesia is a developing country in Southeast Asia with a population of some 180 million people. It has a stable political environment and currently enjoys high rates of economic growth. Indonesia has abundant reserves of natural resources, ample for its own needs and for export. Energy resources include oil, gas and coal. The oil and gas industries are well established domestically and for export. In the last few years, though, coal industry development has been rapid. Coal resources from bituminous to lignite amount to more than 30 Gt (33 billion st). That is more than enough to meet domestic needs and provide significant amounts for export. Figure 1 shows coal basins in Indonesia. Coals in Indonesia are generally young steaming coals. They are very low ash and sulfur, high volatile, bituminous B and C. The Indonesian government's state coal company is called Perum Tambang Batubara. The company has actively promoted the development of its coal for domestic and export markets. In particular, the government has placed priority on non-oil exports of which coal is a major element. The government strives to honor all contractural commitments for the export of Indonesian coal from contractor, private and government mines. From 1987 through 1989, coal production has increased from about 3 Mt (3.3 million st) to 9 Mt (9.9 million st). Exports have grown from I Mt (1.1 million st) to 3 Mt (3.3 million st). These are significant increases for a small industry with limited infrastructure. But with growing investment and development, these production and export levels will increase substantially, and Indonesia will be a significant world supplier of coal in the 1990s.

Introduction Electrostatic separation is the selective sorting of solid species by means of utilizing forces acting on charged or polarized bodies under the influence of an electric field. Electrostatic separation is effected by adjusting those forces acting on particles due to the electric field as well as co-acting forces such as gravity or centrifugal forces so that the different species will have different trajectories at some predetermined time. Electrostatic separations can be broadly defined as being either electrophoretic or dielectrophoretic. Electrophoresis is the separation of charged particles in an electric field, whereas dielectrophoresis is the separation of neutral particles in an electric field1. Examples of an electrophoretic separation can be found with sepa¬rations that use corona charging (ion bombardment), contact charging (triboelectric) and conductive induction. Dielectrophoresis motions are due to the stress and repositioning of charges, i.e. polarization of a neutral particle when exposed to a non-uniform electric field. Separations made using corona discharge devices are often called high-tension, electrodynamic or ion bombardment separations. These are the most prevalent in use today in mineral processing. Dielectrophoretic separation of most minerals is based on differences in dielectric constants of the solid species and usually requires the use of expensive intermediate dielectric fluids. Dielectrophoresis has not been employed for industrial mineral separations, though its effects pose interesting possibilities1, and pilot-plant units developed by the U.S.B.M. are available for testing2. Our discussion will be limited to the three forms of electrophoresis found in commercial practice. Typical Industrial Separations Typical industrial applications of electrostatic separation are: 1. Dry concentration of heavy minerals: ilmenite, rutile, zircon, monazite, xenotime, columbite-tantalite, cassiterite, hematite, scheelite and others. 2. Separation of salts: halite-sylvite, etc. 3.
