INTRODUCTION Coal gold agglomeration (CGA) is a new concept in gold processing. It involves the recovery of oleophilic (oil-loving) gold grains by causing them to adhere selectively to the surfaces of coal oil agglomerates. Under optimum conditions very high recoveries of gold. can be achieved. The agglomerates are recycled to build up gold loading to typically 1000 - 5000 g/tonne. Bullion can be produced by burning the loaded agglomerates with subsequent recovery of gold from the highly loaded ash either by dissolution/electrowinning or smelting. A wide-ranging programme of laboratory testwork has been performed to investigate the response of different ore types to the process. This has shown CGA to be most applicable to ores in which the gold is liberated or easily liberatable, relatively coarse (ca 500 µm) and fine (<5 µm) gold grains being recoverable with equal ease. The best opportunities for CGA seem to be: • placers containing fine gold not recoverable by gravity concentration • low grade gravity concentrates to avoid multiple magnetic/gravity separation stages and amalgamation • free milling ores where the gold can be liberated at a reasonable ore particle size eg >d80 50 µm • tailings past or present from gravity concentration plants. CGA testwork ranging in scale from laboratory to pilot plant on tailings produced by gravity concentration in the 19th century Australian gold rush has already been reported (Bonney, C F, 1988; House, C I, Townsend, I C and Veal, C J, 1988). An economic appraisal for a Canadian free milling gold ore has also been published (Buckley, S A, House, C I and Townsend, I G, 1989). This paper describes results of a detailed laboratory programme to assess CGA as a means of recovering gold from a beach sand deposit in New Zealand. The area from which the samples were taken consists of quarternary interglacial marine, lagoonal, fluvial and eolian deposits. The heavy minerals present are predominantly ilmenite and garnet and small concentrations of gold. In certain locations the sands and gravels are consolidated by a limonitic cement. In the 19th Century some parts of the deposit were mined and the ore processed using stamp milling and gravity concentration. Gold recoveries were low, probably below 50%, due primarily to the fine size of the gold grains, the flaky nature of the gold and also imperfect liberation by the stamp mills. Our laboratory testwork was divided into three parts: i) Preliminary studies on an initial sample to assess the feasibility of treating the ore by CGA ii) Extended studies on further samples from various locations in the deposit to confirm predictions from (i) iii) Conventional gold recovery techniques. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES All CGA tests were performed by agitating a slurry of ore in water in a 0.6 dm3 pyrex beaker fitted with four vertical baffles. When required, potassium amyl xanthate collector was added and the slurry conditioned for 5 min. Coal (ex BP Coal Australia&apos;s Tahmoor Colliery) previously ground to a d80 50 µm was added followed by a commercial grade of gas oil (density 840 kg/m3). The agglomeration time was 30 min. The agglomerates were separated from the tailings by screening, both were then dried and analysed for gold by fire assay. This test procedure provides a reasonably accurate estimate of gold recoveries that might be expected from our 1 tph pilot plant. INTRODUCTION Lead and zinc are today rightly regarded as sister metals. Historically, however, they differ markedly with lead being known and in general use as the metal since 3000 BC in several countries which at that time might have been described as mature economies. Zinc was not isolated and recognised as an industrial metal with distinct and valuable properties until about 1700-1800 AD (although it had, of course, been utilised as a constituent of brass for some 2000 years previously). c were well established as industrial metals by the beginning of the 20th century. The present paper briefly reviews the overall growth in world consumption* and changes in the three main areas which today represent the mature economies or industrialised areas, i. e. ,Europe, the United States and Japan. Trends in overall consumption are determined by the demands for the individual uses for lead and zinc. The changes in patterns of use in the industrialised areas - individually and collectively - and reasons for the changes are also considered. LONG TERM TRENDS - 1900-1984 The World Picture Since the beginning of the 20th century the world consumption of lead (3.9 million tonnes in 1984) has grown almost fourfold and that of zinc (4.7 million tonnes in 1984) is almost eleven times greater than it was in 1900. The long-term trend has been one of continuing expansion for both. metals although the pattern has been severely disturbed at certain periods, for example in the years immediately following the two world wars and at times of marked recessions in industrialised areas. Apart from such major setbacks, new levels of consumption have been established regularly every few years. Recently, however, consumption has not really grown and with only a slow and partial recovery in world industrial activity at present, there is no indication that the peak consumptions of 4.2 million tonnes of lead, set in 1979, and 4.8 million tonnes of zinc (1973) will be exceeded in the near future. The growth in world lead and zinc consumption since 1900 is shown in Figure 1 (which includes changes in copper and aluminium for comparison). Overall growth over the period 1900-1984 has been about two percent a year for lead and about three percent for zinc (annual growth for copper has also been about three percent). Increases in tonnage consumption and growth rates by decade for lead and zinc are summarised in Table I. However, the growth rates by decade sometimes conceal very large individual annual increases and decreases. For example, in 1975 lead consumption fell by 13 percent and zinc consumption by 22 percent compared to 1974. In 1976 consumption of lead and zinc rose by 12 percent and 18 percent respectively. The years when consumption &apos;landmarks&apos; (ie one, two, three and four million tonnes) were first reached are shown on Table 2. Clearly, the pattern of shorter periods being required to attain each extra million tonnes of consumption was broken in the 1970&apos;s. The consumption of zinc overtook that of lead for the first time in 1940, and since 1946 has always been at a higher level. Trends in industrialised areas The two key industrialised areas at the beginning of the 20th century were Europe and the United States which between them accounted for some 95 percent of world lead consumption and 98 percent of zinc consumption. Figures 2 and 3 show the growth in lead and zinc consumption, and Figures 4 and 5 the percentage shares for each area since 1900. Europe has usually been the major user of lead except for some years in the 1920fs, most of the 40&apos;s and early 50&apos;s when consumption in the United States was larger. In 1900, Europe accounted for about 64 percent of world lead consumption and the United States just over 30 percent. Currently, Europe takes about 40 percent of world consumption and the

"Ten years ago," said a mining industry personnel manager, "we used to wine and dine new mining engineering graduates. Now I can pick and choose among men with 10 years of experience." Comments like that are common throughout the industry today. During the 1970s, the US and Canada did indeed suffer from a severe shortage of mining engineers, especially experienced ones. Moreover, it seemed likely this North American shortage would worsen. Increased production of minerals and coal was pushing demand for mining engineers upwards, and there appeared to be substantial new employment prospects for them in the nascent synfuels industry. The oil majors entering the mining industry were pushing for an increased professionalization of mining management, heralding a trend towards higher intensity in the use of mining engineers. In response to the shortage, mining schools expanded their programs dramatically. By 1982, American schools were churning out more than 600 new mining engineers per year, compared to barely 200 in 1970 (Table 1). The timing of the explosion in the number of mining engineers could not have been worse. The downturn in the economy and the resulting slump in the mining industry coincided almost exactly with peak output of mining engineers. The market for mining engineers shifted from shortage to surplus with startling rapidity. The new crop of engineers, no longer courted by the mining companies, struggled to find any mining jobs. At the same time, experienced mining engineers found themselves thrown into the job market, some for the first time in decades. The current oversupply of mining engineers is assumed to be a temporary phenomenon. As the economy recovers, the demand for mining engineers is expected to pick up at least enough to absorb today&apos;s surplus. Not so, according to a recent study by Fenvessy and Schwab, a general management consulting and executive recruiting firm. In 1979, Fenvessy and Schwab was commissioned by a group of major mining companies to conduct a worldwide study of supply and demand for mining engineers to the year 2000*. The study began at the height of the North American shortage. One major objective of the study was "to identify means by which business and educational institutions may cope with and alleviate a future shortage of mining engineering talent." The findings, however, ran directly counter to expectations. The current oversupply will not disappear with economic recovery, the study concluded. In fact, the US and Canada are facing a massive oversupply that will probably last until the end of the century, unless enrollments in schools are reduced. Study Method Fenvessy and Schwab&apos;s conclusions are based on supply and demand models for mining engineers that it developed in the course of the study. Specifically, predictions for the supply of mining engineers are based on a survey of the 54 mining schools that account for about 90% of the world&apos;s annual output of mining engineering graduates. This survey asked for data on historical and projected number of graduates, obstacles to further expansion, changing trends in the use of mining engineers, and graduate career patterns. Fenvessy and Schwab developed three mining engineering supply scenarios from the survey data. The high case, considered unlikely for most of the industrialized world, is based on a continuation of the 1970&apos;s soaring growth rates. The middle case was established from the mining schools&apos; own estimates of future growth in the number of graduating mining engineers. Finally, a "low growth" case for the US and Canada assumed that the number of graduating engineers will remain at current levels. The following material is excerpted from a presentation Mr. Morgan gave recently to representatives of the financial community. Introduction 1982 was a period of challenge for United States Gypsum Company because of reduced market opportunity. Housing starts for the first 10 months averaged a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1 million units, 9% below the comparable 1981 period when housing starts were the lowest in 35 years. Industry gypsum board shipments declined 9% from the already low levels of the same period in 1981. US Gypsum met the challenge with stringent cost reduction programs and aggressive action in the marketplace. In late 1981, anticipating market deterioration, the company&apos;s management adopted strategies to focus on two shortterm objectives: • Adjust operations to perform profitably in view of limited opportunities through more efficient operations and asset management. • Continue to strengthen U.S.G.&apos;s resources and ability to take advantage of important market opportunities as the economy improves through selective expansion of production capacity in key growth markets. Concentration on these two objectives resulted in a nine month performance in 1982 that, while certainly not satisfactory by company standards, compared very favorably with that of principal competitors in terms of net earnings, margin on sales, and return on average stockholders&apos; equity. To counteract limited market opportunities, U.S.G. focused on productivity improvement, cost reduction, expense control, and maximization of market penetration. Energy Use Improving performance encompassed all segments of operations. For example, efficient use of energy was a significant factor despite lower operating rates at most plants. Overall, in the third quarter of 1982 versus 1972, the company used 27% less energy per unit of production, a savings of $15 million in that quarter alone. These continuing improvements helped to partially offset constantly rising energy costs. A number of operations achieved superior results in the first nine months of the year compared with the same period in 1981. For example, gypsum board plants in Jacksonville, FL, and Sweetwater, TX, recorded 8% and 7% reductions, respectively, in energy use per unit of production. Paper mills in Oakfield, NY, Galena Park, TX, and Kansas City, MO, each reduced energy use more than 12%, while the Greenville, MS, ceiling products facility achieved a 16%o reduction. Safety Safety is another important element that received increased attention. U.S.G.&apos;s safety performance over the past five years has consistently improved. In 1981 it was five times better than that of the gypsum industry; nearly 10 times better than all industry as measured by the National Safety Council; and almost 20 times better than all US manufacturing as recorded by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In addition to human concerns, this excellent record results in significant dollar savings that directly affect company results. In 1981, U.S.G.&apos;s pre-tax savings in claims, premiums, and related expenses were about $20 million compared to the industries in which it competes. For the first half of 1982 performance improved further, with a cumulative lost workday incidence rate per 200,000 man-hours worked of only 0.27, an all-time record. Expense Control Careful control of inventories and receivables also received special attention. As of Sept. 30, 1982, inventories were 29%, or $44 million, below the level of Sept. 30,

Introduction In 1969, the US devalued the dollar. This action, over the ensuing four years, resulted in the deregulation of the price of gold. It also resulted in the rebirth of the US gold mining industry. The extreme inflation of the 1970s led to a dramatic increase in the price of precious metals. Consequently an increased interest in the exploration for and mining of gold has occurred. The enthusiasm began among the few existing producers who had survived on marginal profits during a prolonged period of fixed prices and constantly rising costs. Then came the newcomers. They saw the opportunity to enter an industry that historically had been characterized by small operations with low capital costs. It was not until the late 1970s that large mining companies recognized that investment in gold projects could generate cash flows that previously were associated only with world class deposits. Today, gold mining has tremendous appeal for the entire mining community, despite the dramatic price drop from 1980-81 levels. There are even major firms with no mining experience attempting to gain a foothold. But how easy is it to enter the US gold mining industry? What are the basic factors that influence the economics, and what are they likely to be for the remainder of the decade? How has the industry changed, and what is the composition of the active companies? An examination of the industry will help to answer these questions. US Gold Mining History The current gold rush is actually the fifth in the 208-year history of the US. The first recorded commercial mining of gold occurred in the Southeast in 1799. It produced from small, yet relatively rich placer deposits. The famous California gold rush of 1848 placed the US as a major producer with 62.2 t (2 million oz) of output by 1850. More than 93.3 t (3 million oz) was mined by 1853, equivalent to 63% of world production. But the richest placers were soon depleted. By the end of the Civil War, annual production had declined to well below 62.2 t (2 million oz). The government then relaxed prices and the industry again began to recover. The 1870-80s saw the great mines of the California Mother Lode and Grass Valley brought into production. This was followed by development of Nevada&apos;s Comstock, which later became one of the world&apos;s largest producers. Discovery of gold at Cripple Creek in 1892, coupled with technological advances in the use of large dredges in the California placers, resulted in significant production increases. And, with the expansion of the Homestake mine at Lead, SD, in 1898, US output again surpassed the 93.3-t (3 million-oz) level. By 1905, produc¬tion climbed to 124.4 t (4 million oz) with the addition of the Alaskan deposits, new output at Goldfields, NV, and the introduction of the cyanidation process. During World War I, the government forced the shutdown of gold mines. By 1920, total production had dropped to little more than 62.2 t (2 million oz). Many mines remained closed until the Great Depression. This, combined with the devaluation of the US dollar in 1934, resulted in a gold price increase to about $1.13/g ($35 per oz). Then began the fourth gold rush. By 1937, output had again surpassed 124.4 t (4 million oz). This was due to an increase in primary production and new byproduct production from base metal operations. Unlike the previous period of growth, however, this period was short-lived. The imposition of Executive Order L-208 in 1942 once again forced the shutdown of most mines. INTRODUCTION Caving offers the lowest cost per ton of any large-scale mining method, but its successful application demands an ore body that conforms to several rigid requirements. The deposit must be of wide areal extent, massive and not spotty in ore values, and insensitive to ore dilution. It must also be a rock mass that breaks up readily. There are only three active caving operations in the US-Climax, Henderson, and San Manuel-but caving methods have recently taken on new importance as deeper lower grade mineral occurrences and ore bodies are found. These deposits are too deep for surface min¬ing methods, and too low grade to support any type of underground mining except a bulk method such as caving. Announced discoveries or indications that may be amenable to caving include: Climax&apos;s Mt. Emmons molybdenum discovery in Colorado; Molycorp&apos;s Goat Hill molybdenum prospect in New Mexico; the Phelps Dodge molybdenum deposit in Beaver County, UT; Arizona copper occurrences such as Asarco&apos;s Sacaton, Hanna&apos;s Casa Grande, Noranda&apos;s Lakeshore, and Ken¬necott&apos;s Safford; Anaconda&apos;s suspected deep copper de¬posit in Butte, MT; Anaconda&apos;s Carr Fork, UT, deposit; and perhaps others. CAVABILITY&apos;S ROLE IN FEASIBILITY STUDIES Caving is a system of underground mining which removes support from underneath an ore body. As a result, the rock mass fractures, fails, and flows vertically downward by gravity to be collected in previously ex¬cavated funnels. Types of ore that have been mined by caving include molybdenum, copper, iron, nickel, as¬bestos, and diamonds (Julin and Tobie, 1973). It is primarily a large-scale method, with production rates of more than 45 300 t/d (50,000 stpd) having been achieved. However, the initial capital investment before return is very high, often in the hundreds of millions of dollars. The cavability of an ore body or mineral occurrence is a critical item in the feasibility study of a proposed mine, not only from the point of overall minability, but from the point of impact on other costs such as blasting, loading, hauling, crushing, and grade recovered. Aside from the often-asked question of, "Will it or will it not cave?" the real questions are, "Can we afford to make it cave, carry the rock away, and extract the mineral?" The last is not a topic of this chapter, but the first two are. The cavability of an ore deposit or mineral occur¬rence is based on many things, but clearly, if a large enough area is undermined, any rock mass will cave. The result could be a violent collapse as occurred at Urad, CO (Kendrick, 1970), or perhaps the rock mass will cave beyond the ore boundary. Another unfavor¬able result could be ore blocks that are too large for the equipment and orepasses to handle without considerable secondary blasting. Weak rock with numerous fractures may produce a very fine ore when it caves, resulting in dilution and ground control problems. DETERMINING STRUCTURAL DOMAINS It has long been recognized that the geologic nature of an ore body is important to cavability (King, 1946). Such items as weak rock material, intensity of fractur¬ing, and severity of faulting all contribute to the success of a caving operation, and information regarding these is required as a minimum for the cavability determination. In practice, the rock mass-defined as the blocks of intact rock together with the intervening fractures, joints, faults, bedding planes, and other discontinuities-that contains the ore body, as well as the surrounding and overlying rock, must be examined in a systematic and detailed fashion. Surficial geology maps must be pre¬pared, exploration holes drilled, and core logged for en¬gineering information. The fracturing of the rock mass must be studied to ascertain the three-dimensional dis¬tribution of fractures and their characteristics, and faults must be located and described. The strength and other mechanical properties of the rock material, the fracture surfaces, and the fault filling materials must be tested and reported for later use by designers and planners. With this basic information and an understanding of the geologic setting, the rock mass can be divided into one or more structural domains which tend to behave similarly in response to engineering activities (Robertson and Piteau, 1970). One must keep in mind that the determination of the structural domains goes beyond the geologic units present. Several lithologic units may be lumped together, while a single lithologic unit can be divided into multiple domains. Major faults often form their own domain, and the direction of engineering ac¬tivity-for example, cave advance to the north rather than the south-may alter rock mass behavior, resulting in different domains. As an example of the detailed rock fracture map¬ping required for such studies, the structural domain determinations at the Climax mine (Kendorski, 1973) are shown in Fig. 1. The circles are Schmidt equal area projections of the three-dimensional attitudes of frac¬tures (Ramsay, 1967) mapped in detail at various rock exposures. The attitude of fractures is important to the cavability determination since it dictates the directional behavior of the rock mass as it fails, and determines the effectiveness of arching, keying, and rock block inter¬locking. Low-angle fractures must be present to allow movement of the rock in the vertical direction during undermining (Mahtab and Dixon, 1976); if low-angle planes of weakness are absent, the rock mass may arch with a keystone effect, rather than moving vertically downward.

Introduction As with many gravity concentration processes, pneumatic concen¬tration traces its origin in antiquity. The use of winnowing to separate chaff from grain has long been known, and such procedures were undoubtedly practiced in ancient civilizations for the concentration of ores and the separation of slag from metal whenever specific gravity, size, and shape differences were favorable. Taggart142 has reported on the use of dry rockers and dry panning techniques for use with gold ores in arid regions such as Western Australia. The present day air table was developed in the last century for this purpose. Devices and Processes Classification. All classifiers make a separation on the basis of size, shape, and specific gravity. In addition to specific gravity and size, particle shape factor is often particularly important to pneumatic processes, and advantage is taken of the fact that both flat and fibrous particles settle at velocities substantially lower than that of their equiv¬alent spheres. Another factor of importance in this process is the bulk density of the material since substances such as exfoliated ver¬miculite or partially opened fibrils of asbestos have bulk densities significantly lower than those of the pure in situ mineral. Winnowing takes advantage of all of these physical factors to affect a separation starting with a closely sized feed, and vermiculite has been separated from rock by this process.142 When air classifiers are used to size minerals, the separation will often not be perfect because heavy particles will respond similarly to somewhat coarser light particles while flat, elongated, and low bulk density particles will act as would particles finer than the cut size. An example of a classification process that also results in concentration is the zig-zag classifier"&apos; used to separate paper from glass, metal bottles, and cans during the recycle of municipal solid waste. Application of this process to minerals showing the proper specific gravity, size, and shape differ¬ences is obvious. An important device of this type is an air-aspirated screen used to remove asbestos from its associated rock during the dry processing of that mineral.144 The raw ore is crushed and screened and the asbes¬tos removed by aspiration from the surface of the screen by virtue of its shape and low bulk density. Hindered Settling. Based on the discussion in the section on "Hindered Settling Concentration and Jigging," the use of air devices could be anticipated in desert areas or where moisture may be deleteri¬ous to the product to be separated. Such processes have three major defects: (1) dust may be difficult to contain, (2) fines are difficult to process, and (3) the process is inherently less efficient than are wet processes as may be seen from Eqs. 3 and 4 in the section on "Hindered Settling Concentration and Jigging p. 4-47." Taggart142 has reported on the use of both dry panning and a dry rocker for gold separation in and regions. The dry panning makes use of winnowing, defection on the basis of specific gravity and shape during fall, and hindered settling. Prescreened placer material is poured from one pan to another as air blows across the falling stream. The process is repeated many times with hand picking to produce a rough concentrate. Magnetic minerals are then removed, and the residue, one grain deep in the pan, is air blown. In dry rocking the gravel is sized on a steeply inclined screen with the undersize fed to a riffle box with a porous bottom which is blown from underneath."&apos; This device was the forerunner of the present-day air table. Air Tables and Jigs.145. 146 At least nine types of these devices have been developed, all but two of them for coal. While the devices used for coal may be characterized as pneumatic jigs, pneumatic tables, and pneumatic landers,145 only pneumatic jigs survive today. The same is true for ores.&apos;" In these devices presized particles are fed to the separator which consists of an inclined vibrating conveyor with a porous surface through which air is carefully introduced to form a fluid bed. The lighter particles are lifted by the air out of uphill conveyance and float downhill, while the heavier particles in contact with the surface are conveyed uphill by the vibrator. Typically both transverse and longitudinal slopes are used. A plan view of a Triple S air table and the type of separation made is shown in Fig. 44.147 Because of its external appearance, the device has been called an air table, although it functions essentially as a jig. However, some of the asymetrical acceleration conveying function of a standard shak¬ing table is also performed by the eccentric vibrator incorporated into this device. Low pressure air is admitted below the vibrating table surface consisting of cloth (e.g., canvas), porous plastic, woven wire, or punched metal supported on a wire mesh or grid. As with a shaking table, the device produces a concentrate, middlings, and tailings. The middlings are recycled or are subsequently treated on another concentrating device. As with many wet separations, presizing by screening is necessary. The oft-repeated admonition of Professor Richards, "Separation without classification is damnation," is cer¬tainly true here. In this way a small heavy particle which might weigh the same as a large light particle and thus report to the same place on the air table has already been removed in the sizing step. Air tables are almost universally encased with a canopy to remove dust by aspiration. Some concentration may also be achieved in this step when favorable specific gravity, size, and shape differences are present. Applications Ore Separations. Air tables were originally developed for ore separations, and they find application in and regions or where water is deleterious or inconvenient to use or remove (e.g., small tonnage materials already dried). They have been used for asbestos, bauxite, calcite, cassiterite, columbite-tentalite, diatomaceous earth, fluorite, gilsonite, graphite, kyanite, manganese minerals, mica, managite, perlite, pyrite, pyrrhotite, vermiculite, and uraninite ores. More recently, air tables have found favor in separating a wide variety of secondary materials such as abrasive grains, bone char, catalysts, fiberglass, scrap glass, scrap wire from its insulation, prills from slag, dross and coke from metal or from each other, metal from crushed crucibles, lead from plastic in old batteries, and cubic particles from flat ones. The devices also finds considerable application in the preparation of food¬stuffs. "We could blow that damned fort out of existence if we could run a mine shaft under it!," claimed one Union soldier eyeing Bobby Lee&apos;s Petersburg defense line protecting Richmond and Jeff Davis. Puncture the line, take the hill behind, and the Confederate capital would celebrate Yankee jubilee, 1864. That was June. At 4:15 am, July 30, mine boss Henry Reese, sergeant, 48th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers, gingerly entered the mine, dark and muddy. Something had gone wrong. The mine, set to go off at 3:30, hadn&apos;t exploded. It had to be checked. The main mine gallery, 1.5 m high x 1.4 m wide (5 x 4 ft) narrowing at the top to 0.6 m (2 ft), forced Reese into a tuck run. Some¬where up there in that 155 m (511 ft) stretch running 6 m (20 ft) under the rebel works, moisture may have doused the charge. Or maybe a fuse splice went awry. Or maybe there was live fire steaming like a locomo¬tive towards 3.6 t (4 st) of black powder. Perhaps now Reese wished this sprint was shorter. For the mine boasted a record break¬ing distance in military annals. Lieut. Col. Henry Pleasants Credit goes to Lieut. Col. Henry Pleas¬ants, commander of the 48th, who overheard the soldier&apos;s claim for what a mine could do. In peacetime, Pleasants had been a railroad engineer working on the Sand Patch Tunnel. He later switched to mining, working for the Philadelphia & Reading Coal & Iron Co. He even married the daughter of the editor of The Miners Journal. Grieving over his wife&apos;s early death, Pleasants plunged into the ven¬ture of war. This Union officer took the mine idea to the brass. Headquarters was less than enthu¬siastic. "The chief engineer of the Army and the rest of the regular Army wiseacres said it was not feasible," Pleasants wrote to his uncle. The pros scoffed, ticking off a list of horribles: No mine has ever gone that far, men will suffocate and be crushed, the rebs will countermine, the men will be trapped. Still, Pleasants eked out a signal to proceed. In the meantime, the miners of the 48th had commenced to dig anyway. It was like the 48th to proceed against the odds. The 48th Pennsylvania Volunteers The 48th had been recruited from Penn¬sylvania&apos;s Schuylkill County, anthracite coal mining country. The mines had been torn with strife over wages. Strikes and rioting were prevalent. Murder was not unknown. This "Buckshot" resistance centered in Pottsville, PA. It forced the governor to call in troops. Coal was in high demand to run the war machine. Pennsylvania operators worried that a military draft would stir up violence, closing the mines altogether and further shift¬ing business to emerging Illinois mines. Men lit out for the western gold fields in the tens of thousands. Secret societies bred in the mining camps invited draft agents to dance at the end of a rope. Jobs threatened by cheap, victorious South¬ern labor were one warning intended to get immigrant miners interested in the war. Operators gave miners time off to help de¬fend Philadelphia during Lee&apos;s thrust to Gettysburg. Even so, the draft spawned new violence and troop intercession. Soldiers were not welcome. The dust had barely settled when into this Pennsylvania "minefield" marched the 48th on a recruitment drive. The 48th had been in Lexington, KY on guard duty. When it came time for the regiment to pull out, the townspeople had prevailed upon authorities to extend the regiment&apos;s stay. Finally ordered to move out, the 48th was feted by a hanky-waving, tear-dropping send-off to the lyrical lament Auld Lang Syne. And Kentucky fancied itself to be rebel. Striding smartly into the Pennsylvania coalfields, the 48th attracted 400 recruits and marched off under regimental colors specially made by the proud citizens of none other than Pottsville, PA.

INTRODUCTION In 1979 the Committee on Radiological Protection and Public Health of the Nuclear Energy Agency (OECD) defined a programme of work needed to improve radon dosimetry and monitoring. A Group of Experts in this field was established by the NEA and at the first meeting of the Group the authors were designated an initial task with the following terms of reference:- To review dosimetry of radon, thoron and their daughters, and in particular:- - to examine analytical models for the assessment of dose to individuals who are exposed to aerosol mixtures of these nuclides; - to examine the state of knowledge of the characteristics of aerosol mixtures of these nuclides and other factors that influence the dose to the lung, and identify those parameters which should be measured for dosimetric purposes in radiological surveillance programmes; - to identify areas where further study or research are needed. In this presentation we attempt to examine, with these objectives, the relationship between exposure to radon and thoron daughter aerosols expressed in terms of the working level month l (WLM), or its SI equivalent, and dose accumulated by sensitive tissues of the lower respiratory tract. Over the past two decades many attempts have been made to calculate the lung dose equivalent to l WLM exposure in mine atmospheres, usually in terms of the maximum dose to basal cells in a small part of the bronchial tree. The calculations have employed variously detailed models of airway anatomy, aerosol deposition, ciliary clearance and dosimetry of tissue at the bronchial surface, and are well reviewed elsewhere (Walsh, 1970; UNSCEAR, 1977; Jacobi, 1977; Fry, 1977). They agree in the conclusion that basal cells in segmental bronchi (between about the third and fifth bronchial generations) receive the highest dose, although estimates of this dose differ by more than an order of magnitude, ranging from about 0.2 to 12 rads per WLM (2 mGy to 120 mGy). The most critical parameters of these models are the assumed depths of basal cells below the bronchial surface and the fraction of the WL carried by free ions. When more realistic values of these parameters are substituted (Jacobi, 1977), the dispersion in calculated maximum doses to basal cells is reduced to give a much smaller range from about 0.3 to 1 rad/WLM (3 to 10 mGy/WLM). The parameters and methods employed in these various models, however, remain too diverse to infer the sensitivity of the dose conversion to practical variations in aerosol characteristics and the additional factors determining lung deposition and clearance. We have therefore taken the approach of developing newer models (Jacobi and Eisfeld, 1980; James et al, 1980) that can encompass the range of available experimental data on the physical and biological behaviour of radon and thoron daughters and also accommodate the different interpretations that can be put upon them. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND The American Concrete Institute defines shotcrete as "mortar or concrete conveyed through a hose and pneumatically projected at high velocity onto a surface." This definition thus includes what is traditionally known as gunite, which is a pneumatically applied mortar. In mining practice, the term shotcrete is restricted to pneumatically applied concrete, and this differentiation will be used in this chapter. In 1914, following the invention of the mortar gun in 1907, then chief engineer of the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) George Rice developed the gunite process for underground test work at the USBM facility at Bruceton, PA. After World War I, gunite was used extensively in American mines and was also utilized for underground civil works such as the San Jacinto tunnel in California. The greatest development was in Europe where, as early as 1911, gunite was successfully used as an overlay for deteriorated tunnel linings. In 1951, the Swiss firm Aliva developed a pneumatic gun capable of handling coarse aggregate, thus making possible the first use of shotcrete at the Maggia hydropower development. Initially, shotcrete was used to reduce manpower requirements for forming and placing conventional concrete. However, by 1954 Sonderegger was reporting that the structural advantages of shotcrete were derived from its flexibility and from the fact that it could be applied almost immediately after the opening had been made. The incorporation of wire mesh into the shotcrete led to the new Austrian tunnel method or NATM. The use of shotcrete in American mines has been implemented more recently. This delay seems to be due to previously unsuccessful experiences with gunite as a structural material and to the US reliance on wood or steel supports in main-line haulageways. The long experience with the apparently more substantial rigid supports led mine operators to be reluctant to accept the new and seemingly unrealistic lighter shotcrete support. APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS Shotcrete is a relatively new material for use in underground support systems. Consequently, experienced miners are not always available who are capable of applying the material effectively. Shotcrete, particularly in the small cross sections typical of mine shafts or haulageways, is applied in cramped quarters under less than ideal conditions. Adequate lighting should be made available. The surface should be clean and free of running or dripping water. It may be necessary to collect flowing water in plastic pipes or water collection devices. Any dry cement dust from previous shotcrete applications should be washed from the surface in order to assure a good bond. The US Bureau of Reclamation (USBR) while shooting test panels at the Cunningham tunnel in 1974, found that experienced shotcrete operators were able to obtain up to three times greater compressive strengths than were obtained by unskilled operators using the same equipment and shotcrete mix. ENVIRONMENTAL AND SAFETY REQUIREMENTS Since sodium and potassium hydroxide, as well as other moderately toxic compounds, are often contained in shotcrete (particularly where accelerators are used), safety precautions must be taken to prevent skin and respiratory irritation. Nozzlemen and helpers are required to wear gloves, protective clothing, and ventilation hoods with a filtered air supply. Respirators approved by USBM, equipped with chemical filters that will not pass the caustic mists, may be permitted in lieu of hoods if goggles or safety glasses are worn. Protective ointments are available to reduce skin irritation. All air and shotcrete feed hoses should be equipped with safety-type couplings and secured with safety chains at each coupling to prevent whipping in the event of a hose or coupling failure. Some environmental effects can take place down-stream from the development face being supported. The accelerator compounds, as well as the portland cement used in the shotcrete, will be found in the rebound material which falls to the invert of the heading. Since these compounds may be leached from the rebound material and carried by the drainage system, it may be necessary to install neutralizing or other water treatment facilities. Investigations may find that the final reaction with other compounds being leached from the mining operations may result in a more or less environmentally acceptable end product. USES OF SHOTCRETE General Uses Shotcrete, as a combination of cement, aggregate, and accelerator, is utilized for underground openings such as shafts, adits, haulageways, and service chambers for the following general purposes : (1) primary sup¬port; (2) final lining; (3) protective covering for excavated surfaces that are altered when exposed to air (the protective covering may be of a temporary or final nature); (4) protective covering for steel or wooden supports, rockbolts and rockbolt plates, heads, nuts, and other mats, including wire fabric, used to prevent rock-falls; and (5) as a lagging material in place of timber, steel, or concrete between steel or wooden supports. These applications can be grouped into three general use categories: shotcrete used as a rock sealant, shotcrete used as a safety measure, and shotcrete used as a structural support. Use as a Rock Sealant Thin applications of shotcrete can reduce or prevent slaking of shales or other rocks that are altered when exposed to the wetting and drying cycles created by mine ventilation circuits. While shotcrete may be effective in preventing such rock alteration, at the present time it is not as economical or efficient as other commercial sealants. However, if the sealant property can be incorporated into the structural support capability, the added contribution is usually helpful. We evaluated a new process for remediation of acid rock drainage (ARD). The process treats ARD with intermittently fluidized beds of granular limestone maintained within a continuous flow reactor pressurized with CO2. Tests were performed over a thirty day period at the Toby Creek mine drainage treatment plant, Elk County, Pennsylvania in cooperation with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. Equipment performance was established at operating pressures of 0,34,82, and 117 kPa using an ARD flow of 227 L/min. The ARD had the following characteristics: pH, 3.1; temperature, 10 OC; dissolved oxygen, 6.4 mg/L; acidity, 260 mg/5; total iron, 21 mg/L; aluminum, 22 mg/L; manganese, 7.5 mg/L; and conductivity, 1400 uS/cm. In all cases tested, processed ARD was net alkaline with mean pH and alkalinities of 6.7 and 59 mg/L at a CO2 pressure of 0 kPa, 6.6 and 158 mg/L at 34 kPa, 7.4 and 240 mg/L at 82 kPa, and 7.4 and 290 mg/L at 117 kPa Processed ARD alkalinities were correlated to the settled bed depth (p<0.001) and CO2 pressure (p<0.001). Iron, aluminum, and manganese removal efficiencies of 96%, 99%, and 5%, respectively, were achieved with filtration following treatment. No indications of metal hydroxide precipitation or armoring of the limestone were observed. The surplus alkalinity established at 82 kPa was successful in treating an equivalent of 1136 L/min (fivefold dilution) of the combined three ARD streams entering the Toby Creek Plant. This side-stream capability provides savings in treatment unit scale as well as flexibility in treatment effect. The capability of the system to handle higher influent acidity was tested by elevating the acidity to 5000 mg/L with sulfuric acid. Net alkaline effluent was produced, indicating applicability of the process to highly acidic ARD.

The Endako, British Columbia, deposit was initially discovered in 1927 by two local men, Charles H. Foote and Alf Lagdon, who were at that time on a hunting expedition. Four mineral claims were located to cover an area of quartz-molybdenite float that was centered on two small ridges. They subsequently uncovered a 0.5-m (1.6-ft) wide vein on which an inclined shaft was sunk to a depth of 8.3 m (27.2 ft) in 1934. Additionally, a short adit was driven to intersect another vein. Numerous trenches and small pits were also dug. Small test shipments of vein material from this early work were sent to G.S. Eldridge and Co. in Vancouver for metallurgical testing. A concentrate assaying 89.2% MoS, was produced with a recovery reported as 93.3%. The concentrate was essentially free of copper, arsenic, and phosphate. The property was examined by many geologists and engineers during 1934 to 1952, but the only work done was undertaken by the owners in order to maintain their claims in good standing. In 1952, Kennco Explorations (Canada) Ltd. carried out a limited program of bulldozer trenching, sampling, and geological mapping before relin- quishing their option. In 1956, American Standard Mines Ltd. acquired an option on the property, but no assessment work was apparently recorded and the property was allowed to lapse. The key claims were restaked in 1959 by C. Riley and H.T. James of Vancouver. The property was optioned from the new owners by Andrew Robertson in July 1961, and a small amount of trenching was conducted. Robertson, on behalf of his own company, R & P Metals Corp., reoptioned the property in January 1962. The initial results of this work were favorable and justified further exploration. The additional finances required to continue the program resulted in the formation of Endako Mines Ltd. (N.P.L.) on June 21, 1962. Field work by R & P Metals and the first Endako Mines exploration was directed by Bob Couts.

Introduction The grinding of coal-water slurries has received increasing industrial attention during the last decade. In particular, there is long-term interest in the use of pulverized coal-water slurries to replace oil in combustion equipment and in the development of coal gasification/liquefaction processes that require coal-water slurries as feed. More specifically, the use of coal-water slurries in gasification requires grinding a high-density slurry containing the smallest amount of water consistent with slurry pumping and spraying. As part of a fundamental engineering research support program aimed at the industrial implementation of dense coal-water slurry grinding, this author has published several papers on how specific rates of breakage vary as a function of slurry rheology (Klimpel, 1982,1982/83). These papers demonstrated that there is a consistent pattern of change in specific rates of breakage of coal in dense slurries with controlled variation in slurry rheology. By matching rheological data with laboratory grinding results, it was possible to identify directly slurry conditions that correspond to: 1) slowing down of breakage rates, 2) the occasional acceleration of breakage of some sizes, and 3) conditions where chemical additives will increase rates of breakage. In brief, these conditions were analyzed using two different criteria: a) the net production rate of material less than some specified size (e.g. kg/min of minus 325 mesh) in a standard batch laboratory mill test as a function of controlled changes in grinding conditions, and b) the use of the one-size-fraction feed method, which consists of following the disappearance of this largest size over grinding time in a batch laboratory mill to arrive at well-known specific rates of breakage (Austin et al., 1984). Detailed references to the methodology used as well as the conclusions are available (Klimpel, 1982, 1982/83) and will not be repeated here. The purpose of this paper is to further demonstrate several additional characteristics of dense coal-water slurry grinding that were shown in a simplified sense in the earlier publications of the author but which have clearly demonstrated themselves as being very important in the industrial simulation and scale-up of such coal-water grinding systems. In particular, this includes the clear and unambiguous demonstration of how the simultaneous acceleration of breakage of some size fractions and slowing down of the breakage of other size fractions is occurring as a function of changes in coal-water slurry density. In the earlier publications (e.g. Klimpel, 1982), it was shown by specially designed experiments that the addition of fine material and/or the use of a chemical thickening agent accelerated the specific rates of breakage of coals of coarser size fractions using the one-size-fraction method. There were also numerous examples given of non first-order breakage (the slowing down of coal breakage rates) using also the one-size-fraction method due to the presence of excessive amounts of fines which corresponded to the development of a rheological yield value. The problem with the simulation and scale-up of any laboratory and/or pilot-scale mill data to an industrial scale using the mechanistic modelling approach involving specific rates of breakage and breakage distribution parameters (e.g. Austin et al., 1984) is the number of assumptions involved in translating the smaller mill breakage parameters to the predicted larger mill breakage parameters. It is apparent, at least to this author, that to accurately simulate and predict larger scale equipment performance from smaller scale data (given that the larger scale data performance is known and hence predictions can be thoroughly checked) requires a better knowledge of breakage parameters than is currently available. More specifically, it was felt that one of the chief problems was the inability of the one-size-fraction method of determining breakage parameters to sufficiently represent the actual magnitude and sometimes even the directions of. the complicated interactions involved with slurry density changes in coal-water slurry grinding. Thus, a special set of experiments was conducted in a somewhat larger batch ball mill (0.457 m diam x 0.610 m length) than the 0.203-m-diam mill used in the original rheology characterization paper (Klimpel, 1982) so as to minimize any unusual effects due to wall-ball interactions (2.54-cm-diam balls used in both mills). More importantly, the measurements of specific rates of breakage were done using a proprietary tracer method on a portion of a given size fraction, which was then remixed into a natural feed size distribution before grinding. The experimental procedure and analysis of subsequent data was done in exactly the same manner as the radioactive tracer technique on coals as originally developed by Gardner (1962). The advantage of such an approach is that it makes no assumptions such as the independence of the specific rate of breakage of any size on the absolute sizes and amounts of other sizes present (both larger and smaller) in the mix of natural feed material. It will be shown that the measured rates of breakage using the direct tracer technique and the one-size fraction method on the same coal are indeed different. In fact, an accurate assessment of what is happening to the rates of breakage as a function of changing slurry density can only he made by measuring particle breakage under grinding conditions approximating the size distributions actually being produced in practice. Experiment procedures and results The pilot mill used was 44 cm diam x 60 cm long with a volume of 91,250 cm3 and was fitted with six 0.5-in. lifter bars.

Greensand, greensand marl, and green earth are names given to sediments rich in the bluish green to greenish black mineral known as glauconite. The word glauconite is derived from the Greek word glaukos, meaning bluish green. The term "greensand" as a rock name for a glauconite-bearing sediment is more appropriate than "greensand marl," a term that has been doggedly perpetuated in the literature. Because of its potash and phosphate content, greensand was mined and marketed as a natural fertilizer and soil conditioner for more than 100 years. The advent of manufactured fertilizers with adjustable nutrient ratios led to a decline in the use of greensand in agriculture. The material has since been recognized as useful in water treatment. Unfortunately, despite large reserves and world- wide distribution, glauconite has not been utilized to any significant commercial extent because no major application has been found for a substance with its chemical composition and properties. This is probably due mostly to a paucity of research on its potential commercial uses. Extraction of potash received considerable attention during and just after World War I. Because of relatively high extraction costs and a generally low potash content (viz., less than 8%), glauconite lost its appeal as a source of this commodity. Historical Background Greensand was used as a fertilizer in New Jersey in the latter part of the 1700s. During the early 1800s its use became more common; applications of as much as 22.5 kg/m2 were sometimes made, although recommendations for agricultural use suggested 4.5 to 11 kg/m2 (Tedrow, 1957). Many crops, especially the forage type, were said to improve with greensand application; however, because of its slow release of potash, large quantities were required. Certain greensands that contain sulfur and sulfide minerals are harmful to plant growth, and these were classified as poison, burning, or black marls. The availability of higher grade potash salts from other mineral sources and the manufacture of prepared fertilizers displaced the agricultural use of greensand during the latter 1800s. During the mid-1800s the greensand industry, centered in a small section of the eastern United States, grossed more than $500,000/y. Toward the end of the century, however, annual production had dwindled to less than $100,000 in value. By 19 10 there were only six or eight greensand producers grossing less than $5,000/y each (Tyler, 1934). There was a brief revival of the US industry during World War I because of the curtailment of foreign potash, especially from Germany. During the latter 1940s and early 1950s greensand was again recommended as a food nutrient for plants and farm crops. Agronomic studies discussed its potential as a soil additive that gradually releases potash and many trace element nutrients essential for plant growth (Tedrow, 1957). Greensand was sold with the idea that it would condition soil and absorb and hold water while its base exchange properties would release trace elements. For a short time glauconite was used in certain parts of New Jersey as a binding additive in the brick industry, and in the 1800s it was used for making green glass (Cook, 1868). In the early 1900s the base exchange properties of glauconite were recognized for water treatment and the mineral gained acceptance as a water softener. Mansfield (1922) does not mention base exchange even though this phenomenon was known in 1916 or earlier. From 1916 through 1922 several patents for the use of glauconite as a water softening agent were granted. A method was also patented for treating greensand to improve it for water softening and ready regeneration with common sodium chloride brine (Borrowman, 1920, Spencer, 1924, Kriegsheim and Vaughan, 1930). Treated glauconite, on contact with water containing magnesia or lime, takes up magnesium or calcium ions and releases sodium ions. This exchange is limited to the outer surface of glauconite grains, and when all the surfaces have absorbed their capacity, the grains must be regenerated. Regeneration, simply stated, consists of treating or backwashing the glauconite with a sodium chloride solution, which replaces the hard water elements with sodium, thus reviving the glauconite. The process has become more sophisticated due to competition among companies in the water softening business. Greensand products for water softening generally consisted of several different grades distinguished by the particular treatment the glauconite was given during processing. The standard greensand water softener was produced from natural glauconite that was only washed and classified. Its characteristics for water softening are given in [Table 1].

Discussion by R.W. Hutchinson Minter&apos;s excellent recent paper (1990) on the great paleoplacer gold deposits of the Witwatersrand and its subsequent discussion (Cheney, 1991) and reply (Minter, 1991) provide an informative, interesting and up-to-date review of the geology of these unique ores and some long enigmatic questions regarding their origin. Clearly summarized by Minter (1990) are the compelling sedimentologic and stratigraphic relationships indicating that the Central Rand Group conglomerates are ancient placers and documenting the fluvio-deltaic conditions of their transport and deposition. As Minter (1991) indicates, Cheney&apos;s discussion broadens Minter&apos;s 1990 coverage of the subject by considering higher and lower stratigraphic units and by adding detailed comments concerning recently published information about metamorphic and age relationships. Cheney&apos;s discussion and Minter&apos;s reply also readdress the old controversy of epigenetic hydrothermal vs. syndepositional placer origin for these deposits. This controversy has been resurrected by: • recent recognition of hydrothermally-altered granites (HAGS) in the older Archean basement rocks that lie unconformably beneath the Dominion Group rocks north and west of the Witwatersrand depository; • recognition of greenschist metamorphic assemblages in the Witwatersrand strata; and • the presence of interpreted epigenetic mineral assemblages and textures in some of the deposits. These relationships are briefly discussed by Cheney who suggests they may result from later, superimposed metamorphism and deformation and do not prove that the gold was introduced by epigenetic/metamorphogenic processes. In his paper, Minter (1990) cited the 1986 abstract of a subsequently published paper by Hutchinson and Viljoen (1988) who also considered many of these aspects and attempted to integrate them all in abroad genetic hypothesis. In addition, they emphasized the additional important problem of determining the source for the Witwatersrand gold. Although this issue was partially addressed by Reimer (1984), Mossman and Dyer (1985) and Reimer and Mossman (1990), the question has been generally under emphasized in earlier work and was, therefore, not stressed by Minter and Cheney. Reimer (1985) also emphasized the importance of weathering of the basin&apos;s Archean hinterland and its affects on Witwatersrand sedimentation. Since the epigenetic hydrothermal hypothesis was essentially discarded in favor of placerist origin, the gold source for these great deposits has generally been attributed to the weathering of lodes in greenstones or granites of the uplifted, older Archean hinterland to the north and west. However, Hutchinson & Viljoen (1988) present evidence that this explanation is inadequate, as well as data in support of an alternative explanation. They suggest that the gold and accompanying abundant, clearly detrital and auriferous pyrite in the conglomerate reefs were derived by erosional degradation of auriferous-pyritic exhalite previously deposited, by shallow marine discharge of hydrothermal fluids, along the fault-bound northwestern margins of the Witwatersrand depository. The auriferous-pyritic exhalites were generated by fluid-rock reactions in the subsurface, particularly in the highly-altered lavas of the Dominion Group but also in adjacent basement granitic rocks. The process envisaged is comparable to that observed in sea floor hydrothermal systems today, although, in this case, it occurred at the margin of a rapidly subsiding, shallow marine or continental basin. Important evidence for this explanation is the anomalous gold content of the ferruginous, shaley strata occurring throughout the Witwatersrand Supergroup and including the distinctive contorted bed that is an iron formation. These layers have been interpreted (Hutchinson and Viljoen, 1988 and 1990) to represent the more distal, finer-grained, mixed chemical/clastic sedimentary strata. Thus, they are the basinal equivalents of the proximal, auriferous-pyritic exhalites that were deposited along the basin&apos;s margin and subsequently reworked by sedimentary processes. This gold source explanation resolves many of the enigmatic questions regarding Witwatersrand geology and the reawakened controversy between proponents of hydrothermal and placerist genetic hypotheses. The theory invokes a hydrothermal origin for the gold in the basin-margin pyritic exhalites, thus explaining the visible hydrothermal characteristics (Figs. 1 and 2). It also provides compelling evidence for placer origin by encompassing all of the fluvio-deltaic processes of clastic sedimentary transport and deposition that are clearly summarized by Minter. These characteristics result from the degradational reworking of the pyritic exhalites along the depository&apos;s margins. Fluvial reworking, transport and deltaic redeposition of this detritus, along with additional detritus carried into the depository from the hinterland, then formed the conglomerate reefs. Other enigmatic aspects of Witwatersrand geology include: • the rarity of magnetite and ilmenite (the two most common heavy minerals in placer deposits) and the contrary abundance of leucoxene in the conglomerate reefs; • the presence of differing varieties of pyrite (authigenic, allogenic, compact and porous) all of which are auriferous; and • the presence of well-rounded pebbles, even cobbles, of pyrite that, in view of the brittleness of the mineral, could not have been transported great distances from a hinterland.

Invented by Pierre Boutin in the early 1960s the column was a complete break from the conventional flotation cell. 1. When used as a rougher-scavenger, the column is excellent. 2. When used as a cleaner, the results can be spectacular. The very first column tests were carried out using it as a rougher-scavenger in a reverse float where silica was floated from iron. It produced a concentrate underflow as good or better than that produced from roughing and scavenging stages in cells, The froth tailing overflow was better than that produced by several stages of cell cleaning. Column scaleup progressed rapidly from the two inch diameter unit to a semi automated 12 inch diameter column on material from the Iron Ore Company of Canada. A change in operating philosophy within IOCC brought all flotation development, column or conventional, to a halt. At that time, IOCC had an exclusive right to the use of the column in Canada in the field of iron ore. We moved into the field of sulphides. A Canadian copper producer sent ore for testing and the results led to their purchase of the first commercial size of column - a 36 inch diameter machine. It was a mechanical disaster. It took several years to raise sufficient funds to return to that mill with our basic 18 inch square unit. It was to be tested and modified in order to learn how to properly design a large column. Originally used as a rougher- scavenger, it had to produce tails equal to the final tailings from this well run plant. It did, and did so while producing a rougher-scavenger concentrate almost equal to the plant final concentrate. It was finally used as a cleaner and produced concentrate 5% higher in copper than the plant final concentrate with equal cleaner tails. This phase of the column development was carried out under very difficult circumstances. The mill superintendent had realized that if he took the froth removal system from our original mechanical disaster and applied it to a conditioner while injecting air, he would have a flotation cell. He had personally applied for patents on this Maxwell Cell. Our development work was done in his mill and as our results became better and better, our difficulties became worse and worse. We finally had to terminate this work. The 18 inch column installed at Mines Gaspé 14 years later was identical to the one removed from Opemiska. The 18 inch column was tried on various ores over the following years and always produced excellent results. However, it was not really a production size unit. We had always aimed for the 72 inch column (72" x 72" x 44&apos; 9"). Prior to this huge machine, we needed the intermediate 36 inch column. The failure of the original 36 inch diameter unit at Opemiska had raised the possibility of short circuiting inside the column as the cross section increased. The first 36 inch square unit was tested in parallel with the proven 18 inch column. If the underflow of the 36 incher was not as good as that of the 18 incher, short circuiting was a possibility in the larger unit. It had been designed for insertion of drop in partitions, four feed points had been provided and the 36 inch column would have become a modular unit of four 18 inch columns. Testing showed the underflows of both columns to be identical. There was no short circuiting in the 36 inch column. Once we had the 36 incher, we had no fear of the 72 inch column. It is permanently partitioned into four 36 inch columns but uses only one set of instrumentation. All the component parts of the 72 inch column come from the 36 inch unit. In spite of our results, the mining community did not believe the column could work. Finally, in 1980, Mines Gasp6 ordered an 18 and 36 inch column for their byproduct molybdenum

"The seventh annual Mineral & Metallurgical Processing Division (MPD) student poster contest was held last February at the SME Annual Conference & Expo in Phoenix, AZ. A total of 21 students entered the poster competition. The students were required to submit one-page abstracts, which were reviewed by the judges, after which they prepared posters to display their work. A panel of judges went to each student and listened as the student explained his/her research in five minutes.The students worked hard at their research and then set aside time to complete all the necessary steps to enter the competition. Recognizing the effort required to participate, the MPD provided monetary rewards to all participants. First place received $1,000; second, $500; and third through seventh, $200. All remaining entrants received $100 each. The winners have their abstracts published in this issue of Mining & Metallurgical Processing. As in past years, there were separate levels of competition for undergraduates and graduates.Now for the winners:Graduate winnersJoseph Halt won first place for research on the use of additives to starch binders to create iron ore pellets. Vivek Agarwal received second for working on using solvent extraction to concentrate lanthanum. Jordan Rutledge placed third for utilizing tannins to depress calcite in fluorite flotation. Fourth through seventh places were Vu Truong, Jacob McDonald, Hunter Sceats and Doug Schriner.Undergraduate winnersLaura Nugent won first place for using high-frame-rate cameras to follow bubbles as they moved from the pulp to the froth in flotation cells. Taylor Graham earned a second-place finish by researching how to acid leach low-grade manganese carbonate.Although its cliché to say everyone’s a winner, everyone can benefit from attending the MPD Student Poster contest. All the students were able to display their work to potential future employers, and industry professionals could talk to the up-and-coming engineers. Pellets are the preferred ironbearing feed for blast furnace ironmaking. Starch has been proposed as a binder because it has good adhesive properties, does not contaminate pellets and is relatively cheap. However, starch binders typically lead to weak pellets with rough surfaces, and these can cause high levels of dust within process equipment and when pellets are handled and shipped (Halt and Kawatra, 2014). Our research shows that by adding a small quantity of other additives, pellets made with starch binders become smooth and strong. The newly designed binder leads to significantly lower levels of fines when pellets are handled."

Microscopic gold inclusions in sulfide minerals cannot typically be extracted by conventional cyanidation. The gold ore must be pretreated to oxidize sulfide minerals associated with gold and to remove other minerals and chemical compounds that interfere in the cyanidation leaching process. The recovery of gold from refractory sulfidic-carbonaceous ores after roasting pretreatment was studied. With the addition of an oxygen-containing gas (e.g., air or oxygen-enriched air), sulfides of iron, zinc. copper and other metals are tramformed into solid oxides or sulfates and gaseous sulfur dioxide at elevated temperatures (e.g., 400° to 800°C). When the sulfides are oxidized, individual particles lose internal volume and become porous, allowing leaching solutions access to the gold. The structural characteristics of the calcine have a strong influence on the eventual recovery of gold by cyanidation. These characteristics are strongly dependent on the roasting conditions and roasting method. The optimum combination of particle size, roasting temperature, reaction time and oxygen concentration in the off-gas was determined for a typical refractory sulfidic-carbonaceous ore from the Carlin Trend in Nevada. The tests were run using a 150-mm laboratory rotating tube furnace and 160- and 200-mm.fluid-bed pilot roasters. Laboratory results indicated that the maximum gold extraction was 92%, with the head and the leach residue containing 5.7 and 0.4 g/t (0.166 and 0.013 oz/st) Au, respectively. The maximum extraction was achieved under the following roasting conditions: a top particle size of 150 yin, a residence time of 2 hrs, a roasting temperature of 475°C and with 40% oxygen (by volume) in the off-gas. Similar results were obtained from circulating fluid bed (CFB) pilot-plant testing. The maximum gold extraction was 90%, with the head and leach residue containing of 5.1 and 0.5 g/t (0. 149 and 0.015 oz/st) Au, respective) v. These results were achieved with the same particle size and oxygen concentration as in the laboratory testing but with the roasting temperature of 500 ° to 525°C and a residence time of 30 min.

Introduction Heap and dump leaching are low-cost metal production techniques that are gaining in popularity among gold and copper producers. However, the flow of solution in heaps and dumps has received little attention in the literature. This is unfortunate since solution flow is one of the few parameters subject to operator control. Thus, solution management may well influence both operating costs and plant performance. Costs aside, there are two important aspects of solution flow to be considered -the metallurgical and the hydrological. Some of the metallurgical factors have recently been discussed (Jackson and Ream, 1980; Schlitt, 1984; Schlitt and Nicolai, 1987). These cover solution application rates and methods, irrigation rates, leach-rest cycles, and nonvertical solution flow. According to Caldwell and Moss (1985), however, the hydrological aspects may be more significant than the metallurgical ones. In particular, a phreatic surface will form when excessive flow leads to an accumulation of water and the associated buildup of pore pressure within the rock pile. Such internal flooding can either originate at the foundation or at some other zone of very low permeability. The latter condition gives rise to an impounded volume of solution, i.e., a perched water table (see Whiting, 1985). Caldwell and Moss point out that a rising zone of saturation is probably the most common cause of dump failures. Of course, such failures have even occurred in heaps that were carefully prepared for leaching (Milligan and Engelhardt, 1984). Thus, flooded conditions and perched water tables represent an important safety consideration as well as having an impact on metallurgical performance. The following sections describe a case history in which a perched water table developed within a copper leach dump. The description includes background information, solution flow rates, and metallurgical data. Then this situation is compared to one involving normal drainage. Description of the leach system The leach dump in the case history is located at a shutdown open pit copper mine. It was built in two lifts, with the second added some 20 years after the first. There is little detailed information available on the initial lift. It was built with rail¬hauled waste and was generally less than 30 m (100 ft) high at the crest. The area available for leaching was about 120 m (400 ft) wide and more than 380 m (1250 ft) long. The dump surface was prepared for leaching by dozing ponds approximately 12 m by 12 m by 2.5 to 3.0 m deep (40 ft by 40 ft by 8 to 10 ft). The ponds were leached by flooding with barren leach solution returned from a scrap iron cementation plant. Based on mill feed at the time, the average waste grade was probably close to 0.4% Cu. The first lift leached well. It accepted high flows, which together with the waste grade, produced a rich pregnant leach solution (PLS). Old records indicate a PLS of "50 lb Cu/ 1000 gal," or about 6 g/L. As later drilling would indicate, such a high tenor led to dissolution of considerable scrap iron that was returned to the dump. The iron then hydrolyzed and settled out on the pond bottoms. In addition, the waste settled substantially so that the unleached crest was 3.0 to 4.5 m (10 to 15 ft) above the ponded area. Eventually, the leachable copper was extracted and the dump became less permeable. Thus, the PLS tenor dropped until it became uneconomical. About ten years later, mining resumed and the decision was made to add another lift to the dump. This was done without giving much thought to a subsequent leach operation. Hence a 24-m (80-ft) lift was built on top of the original dump. The surface of the latter was not prepared in any way, e.g., by leveling and/or deep ripping, prior to over-dumping. Examination of subsequent drill cuttings indicated that the new lift contained about 0.2% Cu, with chalcopyrite and chalcocite (50:50) being the predominant copper minerals. Most of the chalcocite occurred as rimming on the abundant pyrite, with the pyrite to chalcopyrite ratio estimated at 10 to 1. The use of 100- and 120-ton trucks for haulage caused some waste compaction during emplacement. In addition, the host rock itself was relatively soft, being a porphyry intrusive material that was partially altered to clay. As a result of the initial compaction and clay swelling, the rate of water percolation from the new leach ponds was slow and the ponds often contained considerable standing water. Even frequent ripping failed to provide a sustained improvement in the percolation rate. The poor surface permeability was exacerbated by hydrolysis of iron salts which settled as a layer on the pond bottoms. Partly as a result of the permeability problems, metallurgical performance was not up to expectations. These had been based on laboratory tests which showed about 20% copper solubilization in two weeks. Continued copper extraction in the tests also suggested that a substantial percentage of the copper would eventually be recovered. However, the PLS grade in the actual operation peaked briefly at about 0.48 g/L Cu (4 lb Cu/1000 gal), then declined to a range of only 0.24 to 0.36 g/L Cu (2 to 3 lb Cu/1000 gal). The poor leaching was traced to a lack of oxidation of the sulfides. There were two principal observations supporting this conclusion. First, there was no evidence of any heat being generated within the dump. As discussed elsewhere (Schlitt and Jackson, 1981; Hiskey and Schlitt, 1982), pyrite oxidation is quite exothermic and the high pyrite content of the waste should have led to an increase in the temperature of the leach solution as it percolated through the rock pile. Second, there was no sign of any natural convective air flow through the dump.
