INTRODUCTION The small mining company faces the dilemma of how to finance the development of its properties because it doesn't have the financial resources to pay for the development costs from its own funds and doesn't have the financial strength which will enable it to borrow the money needed for development. However, with a little imagination and the right set of circumstances, a financing can be arranged for the small mining company. This paper is an attempt to describe the fundamental steps on how such financing can be obtained --in other words--what is required to provide ad- equate capital at a low cost for developing and bringing a mining property into production. Innovative financing follows from this. The basic keys for building and maintaining a successful mining company are "the four M's": Management, Market, Mine, and Money. The writer believes their order of importance is as presented and each is a building block required in order to obtain the type of financing that best suits the borrower and lender. MANAGEMENT Management must be experienced, highly organized, realistic, able to take advantage of opportunities and fulfill promises. Mine financing requires a variety of skills and concentration on the part of management. Management should have a thorough understanding derived from experience in geology, construction, mining and metallurgy and environment, marketing, and financial matters. Management must realistically visualize what will be produced at what cost and truly evaluate the risks associated so the proper security can be correctly designed. Since risk cannot be eliminated, the objective of management is to identify the risk which will be present in a given venture and assess the level of that risk which will be acceptable to the firm. Generally the risk which is present is subject to little or no modification. After management identifies and measures the acceptable risk the firm will proceed in a way that it will be least exposed. Management must determine its long-term objectives and strategies within the context of a constantly changing world. This question must be addressed before examining the sorts of risk which affect the development and operation of a specific property. The compilation and interpretation of "hard data" by competent people is good to a point but the experience and instinct of seasoned individuals are the important factors in management choosing a long-term direction for the corporation. The attitude towards risk greatly affects the goals of the corporation. Major risks in a mining project can be placed in four categories: 1. Market - Price, demand, substitution. 2. Costs - Capital, operating, financial. 3. Regulation. 4. Taxation. The feasibility study for a project is the fundamental tool used in the management of risk. Management should employ an experienced team with an established and well-understood set of ground rules for the preparation and assembly of a feasibility study. The necessary degree of realism is built into all levels of the study and if the project is technically feasible, the company's hurdle rate is then used to discount the base-case project cash flow in order to determine its financial viability. Understanding the geological significance of the mineral deposit is critical. There should be strong interplay among the pure regional geologist, the detailed mine geologist, the mining engineer, and the metallurgical engineer. The collaboration among these different disciplines will yield a feasibility study that is more reliable. The essence of this work must be appreciated and understood by the executives planning the financing. It is vital that they thoroughly understand the risks and make the proper risk assessments to cope with our rapidly changing market environment. Projecting future revenue values is paramount and is subject to much estimation. One way to mitigate fluctuations and the risk of falling prices is by selling production for future delivery. MARKET Since mining is a worldwide industry it is mandatory that bankers be aware of what is occurring in the marketplace, both foreign and domestic. Introduction A section of the Federal Land Policy and Management Act of 1976 specifies the procedure for areas the US Bureau of Land Management manages that have wilderness qualities. In part, FLPMA specifies that within 15 years of its approval, the Secretary of the Interior shall review roadless areas of 20 km2 (5,000 acres) or more and roadless islands of public lands identified during the inventory as having wilderness characteristics described in the Wilderness Act of 1964. Further, the Secretary shall report to the President his recommendation as to the suitability of each area or island for preservation as wilderness. However, before any recommendations for, wilderness designation, mineral surveys shall be conducted by the US Geological Survey and the US Bureau of Mines to determine if any mineral values are present. And finally, a Presidential recommendation for wilderness designation becomes effective only if so provided by an Act of Congress. BLM Inventory Procedures To fulfill these legal requirements, BLM is inventorying the land it manages for wilderness qualities. Since the law sets special provisions for Alaska, BLM included in its inventory only the public lands it manages in the conterminous US. In 1980, after public input, BLM picked 967 areas to be considered as Wilderness Study Areas. All of the selected WSAs are in 11 western states and the areas total about 97,128 km2 (24 million acres). From these 967 areas, through its multiple-use planning system, BLM is making initial recommendations of areas to be considered suitable for preservation as wilderness. Those WSAs that BLM initially considers suitable for wilderness preservation will have mineral surveys conducted by the USGS and the USBM, to determine mineral values. Based on these mineral surveys and other resources information including wilderness qualities, the Interior Secretary will report to the President his recommendations on the WSAs suitable for wilderness preservation. To make the initial recommendation of suitability, BLM managers will need information about geology, energy, and mineral (GEM) resources as well as information about other resources. BLM has begun a GEM assessment program to provide its managers with that information. This program is designed to provide information for a WSA suitability decision process that aims to supply minimum necessary GEM information. In essence, the program will provide preliminary assessment of the mineral potential for each WSA. Assessing the WSAs To accomplish this, a two-phase program was designed. In phase one, only existing data are collected and used. In phase two, new data are generated and added to existing data. Phase two begins only if BLM geologists, mining engineers, or managers consider the information provided in phase one as inadequate. This avoids unnecessary work and expenses and allows the program to proceed without undue delay. Figure 1 shows the two-phase process, including BLM's GEM in-

Abrasives are substances both natural and synthetic that are used to grind, polish, abrade, scour, clean, or otherwise remove solid material usually by rubbing action (as in a grinding wheel), but also by impact (pressure blasting). Facts about the discovery, early use, adaptation, and development of abrasives prior to the 20th century are few. From the sparse, earliest information that is available, it would appear that the science of abrasives began when, to fashion his tools, man began to select certain kinds of rocks in preference to others because of their peculiar properties. There is evidence that stones were sawed by some sort of grinding machine as early as 4000 BC in Egypt. The real expansion of abrasives use coincided with the beginning of metallurgy in the Middle East around 2000 BC. The earliest confirmed use of abrasives for grinding metal comes from a steel dagger found along with a sharpening stone which was dated at about 1500 BC. Natural and manufactured abrasive substances play an important role in fashioning and finishing numerous products with a wide variety of end-use applications. The mining and preparation of crude, natural abrasives for their markets and the manufacture of synthetic and other abrasive materials contribute significantly to the US economy (Table 1). In addition, just as sawing to specific dimensions enhanced the value of the Egyptian stone, the use of abrasives in fabrication of modem products, and the addition of abrasives to others, add value. GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS The most important physical properties of materials that qualify as abrasives are hardness, toughness (or rigidity), grain shape and size, character of fracture (or cleavage), and purity (or uniformity). To fabricate bonded abrasive products such as grinding wheels, additional considerations include stability under high heat and bonding characteristics of grain surfaces. The economic factors of cost and availability are always important. No one singular property is paramount for any use. For some applications extreme hardness and toughness are needed, as in diamonds for drill bits. For other uses, factors of greatest importance are hardness and ability to break down slowly and, in the process, develop fresh cutting edges when grains become worn. In garnet sandpaper, for example, highly cleavable, friable, or extremely tough grains are not desirable. For other uses, extreme hardness may be objectionable. Abrasives for dentifrices and for glass-cleaning soaps are cases in point. For the most efficient uses in more critical applications, different types of abrasives are rarely completely interchangeable. While crushed quartz and garnet are both used in sandpaper, the two abrasives are not at all interchangeable in their applications. In the final analysis, the choice of a high-grade abrasive depends upon the quality and quantity of work performed by the abrasive per unit of cost. Initial cost of an artificial abrasive may be much greater than that of a natural abrasive, but the artificial mineral may do so much better work and do it so much faster that the ultimate cost is less. It is for this reason that artificial abrasives have largely replaced natural abrasives.

"The acoustic emission/microseismic monitoring (AE/MS) technique has widely been used in the mining environment for the monitoring of rock mass stability. A successful implementation of the method is hinged on being able to accurately determine the P- or S-wave arrival which is then used in the determination of the source of an event. Determination of the arrival phase is usually performed visually by a human expert. However, the mining environment is characterized by high noise levels and different noise types of varying intensities. Therefore, performing manual phase picking on time series data acquired from the AE/MS monitoring system can sometimes be tedious and time consuming if not impossible. In this paper, a proposal for improving manual P-wave phase arrival picks is discussed. The method involves the filtering of the AE/MS data using a stationary discrete wavelet transform (SDWT) method. After filtering, appropriate scales/levels of the multi-level decomposition process are then selected for further processing. The first step in the picking process after filtering, requires the computation of the signal power and the root mean square (RMS) using the signal amplitudes at each scale. The preliminary P-phase arrival time is picked using the results of the calculated power and RMS values respectively. The calculated RMS values are then superimposed on the calculated power values to determine the final arrival picks. If the arrival time picks obtained by both methods coincide or are within 5 to 10 sample points, the pick is considered reliable. The accuracy of the method was verified using AE/MS data from two datasets obtained from two separate underground mines. The results of the study showed that the picking method is reliable and robust. Based on the data studied, it can be concluded that the method will help reduce the time usually spent in processing AE/MS data from mines. INTRODUCTION A successful identification and location of the source of acoustic emission/microseismic (AE/MS) events is mainly dependent on the onset time of the P-wave phase. In many seismic networks, initial picks are performed by picking algorithms followed by manual picks by human experts. If the waveform signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is low, the P-wave onset time picks by the human expert is generally reliable and accurate [1]. However, for waveforms with high SNR, picking of the P-wave onset could be a major challenge. Also, due to the volume of data acquired daily, manual processing could be stressful and time consuming [2]. These challenges continue to provide motivation for alternative means of providing reliable and efficient ways of improving manual phase picking. The AE/MS technique has been an intergral part of safety monitoring in mines [3] due to its capacity to identify zones of instability in a monitoring area. To obtain an accurate source of an AE/MS event however depends on the quality of the data used for P-wave phase picking [4, 5]. AE/MS data from mines are generally contaminated with excessive background noise generated by the different mining operations. The AE/MS signals of interest are mostly buried in background noise which makes it difficult to pick the P-wave phase arrivals [4]. Processing AE/MS data acquired in noisy environment remains a major challenge due to the weak nature of AE/MS signals [6]. As noted by [4] most of the data recorded in the mine environment are mainly due to events not related to AE/MS events of interest. The complexity of data in this type of environment makes the detection and picking of P-wave arrival by human experts a very difficult task."

The recognition of perlite as a distinct volcanic glass, and of the arcuate fractures that often characterize these natural glasses, dates back at least to the late 19th century and perhaps into the 18th century (Howell, 1974). Some authors suggest that recognition of perlite dates considerably further into antiquity, perhaps to the 3rd century BC (Caley and Richards, 1956). Most recent definitions identify perlite by the presence of vit¬reous, pearly luster and by the presence of characteristic concentric or arcuate perlitic fractures. As discussed more fully below, arcuate fractures in perlite need not be megascopic. The textures of perlite which commonly occur in deposits range from dense to highly vesiculated to pumice-like. Thus, the classical definition of perlite is descriptively restrictive compared to the natural range of textures and neglects to address the issues of genetic origin and geologic occurrence. In spite of the petrological usage of the term perlite, the in¬troduction of expanded perlite aggregate into industrial markets caused the term to be applied as well to the lightweight, cellular aggregate that is produced through the rapid thermal expansion of milled perlite ore. Perlite is distinguished petrologically from other natural glasses by a silicic or rhyolitic composition by the presence of 2 to 5 wt% total chemical water held within the glass structure and often by the presence of pearly luster and onionskin-like perlitic fractures. Worldwide, occurrences are associated with Tertiary through early to middle Quaternary volcanics and with the glassy portions of silicic domes and flows, with vitric tephra, with the glassy chill margins of dikes and sills, and with the glassy portions of welded ash flow tuffs. Less commonly, perlite is reported in association with the glassy portions of volcanic plugs and lacco¬liths. The perlite carapaces that partially or fully comprise extru¬sive domes and flows are often thick and areally extensive, and thus provide commercially attractive targets for low cost open pit mining. Perlite tuffs and tephras are also important commercial sources. Mining costs are minimized by open pit quarrying and by either bulldozer ripping or blasting. Crushing and sizing facilities are generally close to the pits. Due to the low weight and large volume of expanded perlite, unexpanded perlite that has been crushed and sized is usually shipped nationwide directly to local markets where it is expanded and processed for distribution to end users. The vast majority of international trade is in unexpanded perlite. In the United States, the evolution of the expanded perlite industry can be traced to the late 1930s and early 1940s when expanded perlite aggregate was introduced into gypsum plaster and concrete markets as a substitute for vermiculite (Schundler, Jr., oral communication, 1991) and was promoted for use in a much broader spectrum of products (Howell, 1974). By the early 1950s, end user markets were well established and small expanders were numerous east of the Mississippi River. Today, mining and expan¬sion is undertaken throughout the world. Worldwide production of perlite is dominated by the former Soviet republics, the United States, and Greece. Total worldwide production of processed perlite during 1990 is estimated at roughly 1 778 000 tons (Davis, 1991). The physical properties of expanded perlite that give this prod¬uct unique commercial value include: low bulk density, chemical inertness, high insulating ability, nonflammability and fire resis¬tance, and its ability to retain water. These and other physical properties give expanded perlite value in such uses as: lightweight acoustical and thermal insulating aggregate; component in plaster, insulating cements and lightweight concrete; loose fill insulation; as aggregate in horticultural applications; and in milled form as filter aid. In the United States and Europe, the largest end use is within building construction products.

INTRODUCTION This work is a continuation of the preparatory study by Rustan and Stöckel 1979 (3) and (4) of the possibilities to introduce automatic mine ventilation in Swedish mines and construction works. The preparatory study has been financed by the Swedish Board of Technical Development. In the study it was recommended that an automatic step by step control of the fans near the working place due to diesel exhaust emission would be the best solution. A more advanced alternative would be to regulate the fresh air continuously in proportion to the contamination. The latter alternative has been studied by Boliden Mineral Co in the Udden mine. In this study it was found that the air supply could be regulated continuously but it was very important where the sensors feeling the contamination were placed. An intense study of the environment underground is now being planned by our division together with specialists from the National Board of Health and Safety, The Swedish Work Environment Fund, LKAB and the local Governmental Inspection of the Workers Safety. Different gases, radon, dust, airspeed, moisture temperature and pressure is planned to be measured continuously and correlation between the parameters is going to be established to decide the best measurement parameters for regulating the system. The best situation of sensors is also going to be studied. Despite this work hasn't been done yet this paper covers some of the problems which could be encounted with continuous regulation. In this report the environment has been studied during the test with step by step regulation of fans by radio. Diesel vehicles are the largest polluters under ground in Swedish mines and we have therefore suggested that the large diesel vehicles should regulate the fans. The goal of this study has therefore been to find how active diesel vehicles should be able to start and stop gallery fans at both intake and return air. In this paper different methods for activating fans are discussed. Then the best methods are chosen and tested in the mine. In this study we have found that changes of temperature is a cheap and effective method to start and stop cross cut fans in sublevel caving and radio signals seem to be an attractive system for start and stop of gallery fans. This work has been done in close collaboration between LKAB in Kiruna and the University of Luleå - Division of Electronics and Division of Mining and Rock Excavation. A reference group for the project has been established with ventilation experts from the mines, representatives for the local mine worker's unions and authorities from the local Governmental Inspection of the Workers Safety. VENTILATION SYSTEM STUDIED In the project the ventilation system at LKAB in Kiruna has been studied. The mining method used is sublevel caving with 9-13 m slice height. The air is heated winter time over ground by hot water heat exchanger. The main fans are pushing air down to a main distribution level along the 4000 m long and about 100 m wide orebody. From the distribution level, air is taken through shafts down to the sublevels, where it is pushed through the levels by local gallery fans on both intake and return side, see fig 1. The air ( ~ 8 m3/s) is moving freely through the gallery head. The cross cuts are ventilated with smaller fans, diameter 500 mm, and flexible duct, see fig 2. The aim of this study has been to study how to start and stop gallery- and cross fans and examine the environment when the fans are stopped . In Sweden there are no regulations telling that a minimum of air amount must be supplied. Instead the hygienic limits must be fullfilled.

On behalf of my agency, the Mine Safety and Health Administration, I would like to add my appreciation that all of you could be here today. Previous dust symposia over the years have proved the value of close cooperation among universities, government agencies, and professional societies in advancing knowledge of dust research and development in the interest of miners and the industry. I'll just comment briefly on MSHA's part of the overall effort by all parties to control miners' exposure to respirable coal dust and other airborne dusts. As you know, our agency's congressional mandate is to do what is necessary to assure that miners will have safe and healthful workplaces. In the area of coal mine health, this has meant joining with the mining community in a continuous campaign to keep respirable dust and quartz levels below applicable standards to prevent or reduce disabling coal workers' pneumoconiosis and silicosis arising from excessive exposure to respirable quartz. Currently, our agency is processing about 120,000 coal dust samples taken by MSHA and company people during the year and about 8,000 samples taken from metal and nonmetal mining operations. Our dust program, like other MSHA programs, has benefited from increased computerization of records. The attack on CWP has had the highest priority of government and industry. The goal has been to sharply reduce social costs of suffering victims and their families as well as the associated future payments under the black lung benefits program. During the 1989 fiscal year, about 104,000 former miners received about one and a half billion dollars in benefits. Since the program began, nearly 25 billion dollars have been paid out. Much progress has been made in lowering dust levels in coal mines since the standard of two milligrams per meter of air was established in 1972. Before that time, there was a 4-to-10-percent probability of a miner developing coal workers' pneumoconiosis at typical pre-1972 exposure levels. However, under the maximum respirable dust levels allowed today, this probability has been reduced to about 1 percent. Since average dust levels are lower today, we can expect fewer miners to develop CWP in the future. Out goal continues to be elimination of both coal workers' pneumoconiosis and silicosis in both coal and nonmetal mining. In 1985, MSHA revised its coal mine quartz policy to allow mine operators to submit dust samples used in setting the quartz standard. Previously, only single MSHA samples were used. Even though less than half of the mine operators have taken advantage of this change, it has provided a larger population of samples for analysis then before. Also the policy allows operations that are on a reduced quartz standard to have the standard reviewed every six months. In underground coal mining, the job of roof bolter typically has higher than normal exposures to quartz. About 45 percent of respirable dust samples from roof bolting operations contain more than 5 percent quartz and therefore are put on a reduced quartz standard. One objective of the policy revision was to improve miners' health by follow-up monitoring, and this is being done with roof bolting jobs. MSHA studies of surface coal mining operations have provided data showing that bulldozer operators and highwall rotary drill operators often have high exposure to quartz dust, and our agency is directing enforcement efforts to reducing this hazard. Exxon is reclaiming an 80-hm2 (200¬acre) Wyoming uranium tailings basin in accordance with US Nuclear Regula¬tory Commission (NRC) requirements. The reclamation plan is designed to control the tailings and their radioactive emissions for at least 1000 years. Rigorous modeling and analyses of potential erosion by wind and water were used in planning. The use of riprap was minimized and the need for long¬term reclamation maintenance was eliminated. The resulting design is simi¬lar to regions stable from erosion cre¬ated by nature. The concepts used in the design and implementation have wider reclamation application. Highland history Exxon operated the Highland uranium operations from 1972 until mid-1984. Open pit and underground operations mined the roll front, sandstone ore body. The 2.5 kt/d (3000 stpd) mill employed conventional crushing, grinding, sulfu¬ric acid leach, CCD, SX, precipitation, and drying circuits. The mill produced 10 Mt (11 million st) of tailings. An¬other operator began commercial scale in situ leach operations in 1988. The tailings basin was constructed by deposition of mill tailings in a natural ravine dammed with a 30-m (100-ft) high by 1050-m (3400-ft) long clay core earthen dam built entirely downstream of tailings. Figure 1 shows the layout of the tail¬ings basin in 1984. Tailings were de¬posited along the dam face on the east side of the basin as well as in the west end and along the south edge until the early 1980s. This left a deep water pond in the middle of the basin. The deep pond was largely filled with tailings during the last four years of mill opera¬tions by the construction of two tailings causeways and the operation of a float¬ing tailings line. The pond water volume was mini¬mized by recycling tailings water to the mill and by operating a 32-L/s (500¬gpm) evaporation enhancement spray system during the last few years of mill operations. Regulatory requirements Several conceptual tailings basin rec¬lamation plans were prepared during the mine life. In September 1984, Exxon began preparation of a detailed plan in response to an NRC request. Water, Waste and Land Inc. (WWL) of Fort Collins, CO was selected to help pre¬pare the plan that was submitted to the NRC in December 1984. The design had to meet the require¬ments found in NRC regulations (NRC, 1985). These were based on regulations prepared by the Environmental Protec¬tion Agency (EPA, 1983) at the man¬date of federal law (UMTRA, 1978). The NRC regulations contain strict primary standards and a somewhat more flexible set of secondary standards. The primary standards include requiring that: • radiation from tailings be reduced to background levels; • radon gas emitted by the tailings be reduced to 20 pCi/m2/s from the surface of the reclaimed tailings pile; • tailings not be dispersed into the environment; and • these conditions endure without routine maintenance for at least 200 years and for 1000 years to the extent reasonably attainable. The lengthy time requirements pre¬sented a large engineering challenge. Radon is a radioactive, chemically inert gas with a 3.8 day half-life. It is released from uranium tailings by the radioactive decay of radium, which, in turn, is a radioactive decay product of uranium. Radon emissions from ura¬nium tailings can be controlled with an earthen cover thick enough that the radon gas decays to its solid, short-lived radio¬active daughters before the radon dif¬fuses through the cover material into the air.

Introduction The purpose of this paper is to present a procedure used by the authors for evaluating and designing soil liner systems. This method is particularly valuable in evaluating various treatment schemes for chemically amended soil liners. A tabulation of laboratory test results on various soil types are presented to quantify the effectiveness of certain treatments. A typical liner design program includes developing and proving soil borrow sources, designing the cross-section of the liner system, developing construction specifications, and providing construction services to ensure the intended product is achieved. Material Source Development The first step in designing a soil liner is to identify and evaluate suitable borrow sources within an economical haulage range. This is best done in a two step approach: a reconnaissance level investigation to identify target areas and a detailed evaluation of those targets. Reconnaissance: The goal of the preliminary investigation is to locate potential borrow sources for liner quality soils. This includes all natural materials which can be compacted, chemically treated, or otherwise amended to yield an installed permeability at or below some target value. This requires utilization of all available data sources: Soil Conservation Service, BLM, aerial photos, USGS geologic maps, and project geologist records. The goal at this stage is to locate shallow deposits of favorable soil types. The Unified Soil Classification System provides an excellent first pass grouping. Clays, clayey sands and silts are the most favorable soil types, although silty sands and occasionally clayey gravels can make excellent liners, and are often amenable to chemical modification. The lowest permeabilities are generally achieved with CH, CL and MH soils. Once preliminary targets have been identified using visual examination, laboratory classification tests should be performed to further refine the selection. Testing at this stage should include gradation, plasticity and hydrometer analyses. Additionally, "preg-rob" testing should be done as early as practical. Preg-rob is a phenomenon where gold or silver ions in solution associate with the clay, or other, minerals. When this occurs, a portion of the gold or silver leached from the ore is actually tied-up by the clay and thus a reduces recovery. Testing for this consists of agitating a small sample of the soil in a solution containing dissolved gold or silver, preferably of similar chemical make-up as the solution which will contact the actual liner. The solution and soil are assayed before and after agitation to determine loss to the clay. A reliable estimate of the hydraulic conductivity, commonly referred to as permeability, can be developed from the D10 value by the use of Hezen's formula: K = 100 (D1012 This relationship is limited to soils where the finer particles do not move due to the force of flowing water (i.e.: "hydrodynamic stabilitym)(1). Additionally, the effect of platty particles on permeability is not as predictable as the effect of equidimensional particles. D10 is the sieve opening size at which 10% of the material is finer. Plasticity is also important from several standpoints. Constructability is directly related to plasticity. Very plastic clays and non-plastic silts both tend to be difficult soils, while medium plastic clays and clayey sands are generally very desirable. Post construction performance is also related to plasticity (e.g. swelling, shrinkage cracking, frost heave, etc.). Additionally, low plasticity silts and silty sands generally do not respond well to chemical amendment. Source Development: The result of the reconnaissance evaluation should be an estimate of the relative probability of developing a suitable borrow source within an economical haul distance. Of course, "economical distance" depends on the degree of handling and treatment the borrow material requires, as well as the cost of synthetic alternatives. The purpose of the detailed investigation is to prove out quantity and quality of material sources, and determine design parameters such as degree of compaction, mixing, treatment and thickness of liner. The emphasis of the testing program should be permeability and strength. Strength becomes increasingly important as the slope of the liner and the height of the heap increase. Productivity from large walking draglines is primarily dependent on operator skills. This machine may be in operation three shifts a day, 364 days a year, and its output is directly related to coal uncovered and mine profitability. Dragline operators must have highly developed manual skills and be knowledgeable in mine planning and working strategies. When using equipment costing more than $25 million, some formal training is usually required before an operator is allowed to assume complete con¬trol; however, dragline operators rarely receive any structured training before operating these giant excavators. A form of apprenticeship is usually followed where an operator candidate progresses from a groundsman to an oiler position. As an oiler, he is permitted to operate the dragline for short periods under supervision. After apprenticeship, the operator is considered sufficiently prepared to operate the largest, most powerful machine at the mine. The apprenticeship training method has obviously provided the surface mining industry with skilled dragline operators; however, conditions are arising that require a realistic and effective training tool that can be accessed by mining companies. New mines -either planned, under construction, or recently opened in the West-do not have access to a pool of experienced operators and oilers as do Midwest mines. As coal mining activities increase in both the West and Midwest, demand for trained dragline operators could be required in a short amount of time. Also, the more productive techniques along with sound basics of strip mining are sometimes lost in the informal "OJT" training method. Modern draglines are the pacemakers of the strip mine, and are simply too expensive to be used as a training device where lost productivity and susceptibility to damage can directly affect mine output. The Dragline Training System is a logical first step in formally educating or retraining operators. The program, started by the US Bureau of Mines and continued by McDonnell Douglas Electronics Co. under contract with the US Department of Energy, was installed and evaluated at DOE's Carbondale Mining Technology Center in Carterville, IL, last year. It is now being operated by Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. System Description The Dragline Training System addresses specific environments and work practices encountered during an actual mining operation at a midwestern US surface mine. This area was chosen because of its high number of strip mines using large walking draglines. Most draglines in the region are Bucyrus-Erie 1370, 1450, and 2570 models, so the dragline trainer was patterned after the company's 1370 machine. Operating and emergency controls are sufficiently standardized for most large walking draglines, and peculiar dynamics and responses from any specific dragline can be programmed into the computer system. The computer simply prompts the user to select the manufacturer and any peculiar response or rate changes needed. A 46-m3 (60-cu yd) bucket is simulated, but for closer simulation, various bucket configurations can be provided. Dragline Trainer The dragline trainer uses the TV-model simulation technique. A scaled model of the dragline is positioned in a model mine. A television camera is positioned at the operator's theoretical eyepoint, and the view captured is projected into a large screen in full scale. The screen is positioned in front of the operator seated in a full-size cab at Bucyrus-Erie controls. By manipulating the controls, the trainee can operate the model dragline and observe its reaction in the television display. In addition to housing dragline controls and consoles, the wooden, oversized cab contains the digital computer, terminal, video recorder and monitor, power switch box, air conditioner, and has enough room for the instructor and five student observers. The 50:1 scaled dragline model contains servo-controlled functions for hoist, drag, swing, delta swing, and longitudinal and lateral position. The delta swing provides bucket lag during swing and a realistic pendulum action when the swing is terminated. The over-responsive second order servo system is designed to provide hoist, drag, and swing rates exceeding present draglines. In all cases, position servos are used for better control and sta¬bility. The normal rate operation of an actual dragline is computed for the specific machine and presented to the servo amplifiers as iterative position commands increasing or decreasing

Estimating the lithologic composition of gravel deposits for aggregate quality using standard field and laboratory techniques is costly and time-consuming. As an alternative, digital geologic maps and elevation models may provide a means for predicting the lithologic composition of channel and terrace deposits. Digital geologic maps can be used to evaluate the distribution of map units: their geomorphic setting, and the physical properties of the gravel source. To test this concept, the lithologies and topography of the upper drainage basin of the Big Thompson River along the Colorado Front Range were used to examine various factors that may control the final lithologic composition of channel and terrace gravels downstream. The simplest factor is the area of each of the map units in the upper drainage basin area, which can be easily measured from the digital geologic map. The percentage of each map unit within the total area provides a estimate of the pro- portions of each map unit that might be expected to occur in the downstream gravels. Published estimates of the hardness and durability of each map unit were used to calculate physical property-weighted areas; these areas are an estimate of the potential of each unit to be eroded and transported as gravel-sized particles. The areas of each map unit at 1-kilometer intervals from the drainage basin exit point were used to calculate a distance-weighted area for each map unit. For this study, a simple inverse relationship (area/distance) was used for distance weighting, but a more complicated distance function may ultimately be required. The topographic setting of exposed rock units should exert a significant influence on whether material will move slowly or rapidly through the drainage system. Two topographic factors were examined: gradient and slope. A simple gradient between map unit occurrences and the exit point of the drainage basin was used to calculate a gradient-weighted area estimate for each map unit. The slope-weighted area estimate uses the slope steepness (in degrees) in the immediate vicinity of each map unit occurrence as a measure of the tendency of material to begin moving into the sediment transport system. The primary intent of this study was to test the concept of using digital geologic map and elevation images to estimate gravel composition, rather than actually producing a useful analysis of a drainage basin. Each of the controlling factors was examined independently to gain an understanding of the magnitude of the effect of each factor. Ultimately, a comprehensive predictive model will be constructed using a combination of the various controlling factors.

Feldspars have major uses in glass manufacture and in ceramic products. About 6 million metric tons (6.6 million short tons) are used annually. Feldspars are desirable because of their high aluminum and alkali contents. Na feldspars are favored for glass, while K feldspar is often preferred in the pottery and tile industries. Economic deposits occur in a variety of geological environments. Most are in granites or granite-like bodies, pegmatites being a common source worldwide. Alkali granites, particularly those some- times called alaskites, are mined directly as a source of feldspar and associated minerals. Some other igneous bodies, such as aplites, rhyolites, and partly altered granites (for example china stone) provide alternative feldspar-rich products. Nepheline syenites and phonolites are other sources of feldspar and contain higher amounts of alkalis. Feldspar-rich (arkosic) sediments derived from the weathering of pegmatites and granites are widely extracted and processed for use in ceramics. The present study reviewed the various sources of feldspars throughout the world. Data on the quality of products has been taken from literature, and samples have been obtained from a large number of producers. The mineralogy and chemistry of the samples has been determined and, as far as possible, have been related to the geology of the source area. Feldspar products show a wide range of chemical and mineralogical compositions. Some are pure Na feldspar (albite), others are made up entirely of K feldspar (microline and orthoclase), but many are mixtures of Na and K feldspars. Significant quantities of quartz are often present, and many products contain mica and kaolinite. Fe203 con- tents are very low, typically less than 0.1 percent. Detailed mineralogical studies show that four groups of products can be recognized on the basis of feldspar mineralogy. These are albite, albite with microcline, microcline with orthoclase, and orthoclase with albite. Products containing microcline and orthoclase together are mostly sedimentary in origin. Those with albite only, or albite with microcline have a pegmatitic or granite origin. Those containing orthoclase as the dominant K feldspar are derived from aplites or rhyolites. There does not appear to be any relationship between the feldspar mineralogy and the quartz content. Peraluminous S- type granites and pelite-dominated high-grade metamorphic rocks, in which there is a significant volatile component, are likely to be the most important feldspar sources. Partial kaolinization of feldspar-containing rocks often improves minability, decreases crushing costs, reduces iron content, and increases the K2O/Na2O ratio.

INTRODUCTION In the past decade, the international coal trade has been undergoing a period of gradual change. This change will continue through the remainder of this century until by the year 2000 the international coal industry will look very different from the industry which existed in the early 1970's. The industry which will emerge from the thirty year period of change (1970-2000) will be different in many ways. -The volumes of coal transported will be much larger. - The primary type of coal traded will be steam coal rather than metallurgical coal. - A much broader group of countries will be participating in the trade both as suppliers and as consumers. - The trade will be dominated by a relatively small number of large producing and trading companies. - The coal mined for international shipment will be primarily surface- mined. – The United States will play a decreasingly important role in international coal trade. In the course of this paper I propose to address three questions which are crucial to the formulation of an understanding of the changes outlined above : (1) Which supplier nations will be most successful in the international metallurgical and steam coal trade in the next decade and a half? (2) What emerging trends will shape the international coal trade in the 1980's and 19901s? (3) Where are U.S. producers likely to fit in this scheme of things? As a background to my remarks, I should note that what follows is based on five years of work in a consulting capacity on coal supply and demand issues worldwide. Although in the course of this work I have had occasion to develop mining and transportation cost figures for all of the countries discussed below--both my own and those obtained from coal producers--it is apparent that success in the marketplace can be determined in some instances by considerations other than costs. Nevertheless, my comments today about international competitiveness will be dominated by cost considerations; there are, after all, not many markets that reward the high-cost producer with success. Let us begin by establishing some criteria for success in the international coal market and then compare some of the producer nations to some of these criteria. The criteria are: - Low delivered cost, - Good quality coal, - The producer's partnership in a joint mining venture with an importer or a consumer of coal, - The producer's international business orientation and commitment to penetrating the market, - The producer's reliability as a supplier, and - Political pressure exerted by the producing country on consumers.

The Trombetas bauxite deposits were discovered by ALLAN, as from the original work of the geologists Drs. E. E. GREIG and 3.A. STAARGAARD on the axis of the Amazon river, between Manaus and Santarem - (see fig. 1). With research licences obtained in 1965 by the SANTA RITA BAUXITA - a subsidiary of ALAN a group of Brazilian geologists, under the supervision of IGOR MOUSASTICOUSHVILLY, begins researches on the areas of Parintins, Juruti and Mathias with unsatisfactory results. In 1966, photographs obtained from the US Air Force and the Brazilian Oil Company PETROBRAS -, covering an Amazon region between Parintins, Santarem and north of Trombetas river, permitted the identification of a great number of plateaux between the Nhamunda and the Trombetas rivers. Based on this information, a research group has worked intensively from 1966 to 1967 allowing the discovery of the trihydrated bauxite in a quite large area. After five years of intense work and analysis of approximately 56.000 samples, near 500 million of tonnes of bauxite are evaluated on the several plateaux of the, area, thus insuring the commercial exploration of these deposits. Such discovery places Brazil among the detainers of the main bauxite stocks of the world and as a potential exporter.

Copper has held up extremely well as we have moved through the trough of the economic cycle. In the aluminum, lead and zinc industries at least half of the Western World production was unable to cover its operating costs at the prices prevailing throughout most of 1991. In copper, less than 10 percent of production ran in the red last year. Most of that was in Peru where the government has not allowed its currency to devalue at the same pace as inflation. Thus, mining company revenues in local currency terms have risen very modestly while costs have escalated tremendously. Excluding such governmentally imposed distortions, virtually every mine in the Western World ran at a profit last year. While copper producers have to be extremely happy about staying in the black through the trough of the consumption cycle, consumers have to be worried. They must be asking themselves, "If copper held at over $1.00 in a year when consumption declined, how high will prices go when demand picks up?" Consumers are accustomed to paying high prices at the peak of the cycle, but they are also accustomed to paying low prices at the trough of the cycle. What went wrong this time?

"Trace element analysis of placer gold can be used as a valuable exploration tool in order to determine the original deposit source and locating lode gold deposits. Placer gold collected from multiple districts in New Mexico and Alaska, coupled with a broad database of previously analyzed placer gold samples indicate correlations between chemical signatures (especially gold, silver, and copper) and type of deposits (i.e., Au-rich copper porphyry deposits, Au porphyry deposits, and epithermal deposits). By completing a chemical analysis and determining the particle morphology of placer gold collected from these districts using an electron microprobe, patterns in the chemical signatures from each location can be used to examine chemical variability (1) within the individual placer gold particles, (2) within the same district and (3) among different districts. INTRODUCTION Although there are numerous past studies on the chemical composition of placer gold by Newberry et al. (1997), Melchiorre (2001, 2009), Townley et al. (2003), and McLemore et al. (2014), the gold analyzed tends to be collected from one or few specific districts. Rarely do those studies compare compositional results to additional districts, or elaborate on the correlation between the elemental composition of the placer gold and the original deposit source for the respective districts. This research analyzes the composition of placer gold from multiple districts and within the same district. There are a number of elements, which can, in various quantities, be present in placer gold particles. Native gold can be in complete solid solution with native silver and contain additional elements including Cu, As, Pb, Fe, and S. The chemical signature of the gold is determined by the thermodynamic conditions of precipitation and transport as well as the total metal content of the system. As Townley et al. (2003) explains, “These thermodynamic conditions and metal budget differ from one type of hydrothermal deposit to another, and hence different deposit types will each have a characteristic gold compositional signature.” Identifying this signature can be a highly valuable tool in exploring for gold, as it can not only be used to determine the original source deposit of the placer gold, but provide valuable insight as to the erosion level of the present deposit."

The mechanized excavation of tunnel structures ensures the greatest possible environmental protection during tunneling itself. Professional, systematic and high quality rebuilds and reuse of already proven equipment also ensures maximum efficiency in the use of materials and energy resources. It offers an enormous potential for a highly optimized environmental balance. Here the manufacturers of tunnel boring machines and their users in particular have a duty to ensure transparent, high quality and binding standards in the entire rebuild cycle and in the refurbishment management of innovative tunneling technology. This paper deals with the comprehensive processes with rebuild levels of tunnel boring machines and highlights some exemplarily implemented projects. 1 INTRODUCTION All over the world, the number of tunnel boring machines (TBM) in which equipment rebuilds from previous projects are re-used has increased over the last few years. This text presents the technical and economical aspects of this market development. It also takes a look at the practical implementation of rebuild measures. The ""ITAtech Guidelines on Rebuilds of Machinery for Mechanized Tunnel Excavation"" from 2015 lay down the requirements that the machine manufacturers must meet. 2 ECONOMICAL AND ECOLOGICAL ASPECTS OF RE-USING COMPONENTS The globalization of the construction sector and the consideration of environmental aspects promote an increased re-use of machines and machine components. Nowadays, large-scale construction projects are often carried out by international joint ventures of several individual companies that are established specifically for this purpose. After the completion of the project, the joint ventures are dissolved and they liquidate their project-specific equipment, such as tunnel boring machines. Today, it is much more uncommon for such machines to remain permanently in the possession of construction companies. Joint ventures offer TBMs on the free market, or they exercise contractually agreed repurchase options with the manufacturer. On the whole, this increases the number of re-usable components or complete tunneling systems available on the market."

"The East Side Access (ESA) CM005 Contract - Manhattan South Structures - consists of the installation of the waterproofing and final concrete lining for railroad tunnels, 3-Level Wye track turnout structures, segments of the Main Cavern Station, and a series of Ventilation Structures excavated beneath the existing Metro North Railroad (MNR) Grand Central Terminal. Several key team decisions made collectively by the Construction Manager (CM), Designer, and the Contractor has allowed the scheduled construction duration of 29 months to be maintained. These strategies include the use of alternate design and construction methods, including the use of pneumatically applied concrete lining and precast lining. This paper discusses these strategies, and illustrates how successful teamwork and cooperation during the execution of a large-scale construction project can lead to lowering costs, improving quality, and maintaining the overall project schedule. INTRODUCTION The East Side Access Project The Long Island Railroad (LIRR) currently transports commuters from Long Island into Manhattan, terminating at the already over congested Penn Station on the west side of Manhattan. Once completed, the ESA Project will provide LIRR commuters direct access to the east side of Manhattan underneath Grand Central Terminal. The ESA Project will help alleviate the congestion at Penn Station, which currently accommodate the NJ Transit, Amtrak, and LIRR lines; reduce travel time for LIRR passengers traveling to the east side of Manhattan and facilitate connections to the NYCT Subway System and Metro North Rail Road. The ESA Project includes building new tunnels and facilities under Manhattan and Queens. (See Figure 1).The Manhattan Alignment In the Manhattan segment of the ESA Project the excavation in hard rock of tunnels, cross passages, caverns and shafts has been completed by tunnel boring machines, drill and blast, and road header. The construction of the structural concrete final lining, interior structures and fit-out of the previously excavated caverns and tunnels are currently being performed under Contract CM005 Manhattan South Structures awarded to Michels Corporation and Contract CM006 Manhattan North Structures awarded to Frontier Kemper Constructors Inc. This paper focuses on the design and construction aspects of Contract CM005 which is the first ESA Contract in Manhattan to successfully construct concrete final linings in pre-existing excavated areas."

After more than 100 years, alkaline cyanide leaching of gold and silver ores, either directly in the case of oxidized ores, or after pretreatment of refractory ores by roasting, pres­sure leaching or bacterial leaching, remains the dominant r leaching method to extract the precious metals f om ores. Leaching with halides (chlorine, bromine and iodine) and with thiourea and thiosulfates is less common but prac­ticed in some cases to dissolve the precious metals both from ores and jewelry and electronic scrap. Cyanide solutions can contain from 1 ppm Au to 30,000 ppm Au. According to the source, i.e., agitated tank leach­ing, heap leaching, eluates from stripping activated carbon or waste electroplating solutions. Similar variations occur with silver which can have a profound influence on the recovery method. The presence of other elements in the leach solu­tions, particularly mercury and copper, likewise play an important role in the procedures required to recover the gold r and silver values f om solution. The same circumstances are found when lixivants other than cyanide are used to dissolve the precious metals. For decades, the preferred method of recovering gold and silver values from alkaline cyanide leach solutions was by zinc dust precipitation according to the Merrill Crowe process developed in the late 19th century. Finely ground gold and silver ores or concentrates were either leached directly or after roasting, in agitated tanks or Pachucas and subjected to solid/liquid separation by filtering or by treat­ment in counter-current-decantation washing thickeners (CCD). This solid/liquid separation step was often very dif­ficult especially when ores containing high quantities of clay were treated which caused filtration or thickening problems. Following testing and development by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) in the late 60s, the introduction of carbon­in-leach (CIL) or carbon-in-pulp (CIP) plants to recover gold and silver from leach pulps was one of the greatest opera­tional and cost saving improvements made in the industry in South Dakota and quickly spread around the world to be the most common process to recover gold and silver from cyanide solutions.

An evaluation was performed on a district recirculation system at a trona mine in Granger, WY. A 1.52 m-diam (5 ft-diam), 37.3-kW (50-hp) vane axial fan was installed in a crosscut between the intake and return airways and recirculated about 31.4 m3/s (66,578 cfm) of air back into the intake. This amounted to a recirculation factor of about 20% of the return air. This air was part of the primary ventilation to three different continuous miner sections at operating distances of between 610 m (2000 ft) and 1829,m (6000 ft) from the recirculation fan. The mine environment was constantly monitored for respirable dust, methane and carbon monoxide in the operating sections and in the main intake and return entries. In addition, air samples were taken with and without the recirculation system during the evaluation and analyzed using gas chromatography. The results of this study showed only small increases in dust, while all other mine contaminants remained at such low levels that it was impossible to determine any relative changes from the recirculation system. Because of this, a brief SF6 tracer gas analysis study was subsequently performed to more precisely determine an increase in a mine contaminant with the recirculation system.
