Two of the most critical concerns a blaster faces today are airblast and flyrock. Airblast, sometimes called noise or overpressure, can cause damage to neighboring structures, especially windows. It also is the cause for many vibration complaints. The human sense of hearing is often more acute to identifying source than the sense of touch. When a blast occurs, the airblast is what identifies the event. The vibration that may be felt is then associated with the airblast. Vibrations of greater magnitude, such as passing trucks or construction work on the house, go unnoticed because their sounds are familiar or expected. Flyrock is the number one killer and cause of damage. Elasting laws provide limits for these two concerns. Failure to comply may result in fines, closing of the operation, and even prison. Airblast and flyrock originate from two distinct areas, the open face and the bench surface. Each of these areas is addressed in the detailed proven procedures that follow, and if used by the blaster in conjunction with his own blasting knowledge, a sound blasting plan can be developed to minimize the occurrence of airblast and flyrock.

The need for the hydraulic transportation of coal in the New South Wales coal industry, both from the coal face to the surface and from the coal mine to the consumer or the port for export, is explained. Details of research projects currently in progress and involving the hydraulic transportation of New South Wales coals are given together with information on the hydraulic transportation of coal in the United States of America. The potential of hydraulic transportation as a viable alternative to the proposed expansion and upgrading of the New South Wales railway system to meet the projected New South Wales coal production to the year 2000 is described.

A series of plate loading tests were carried out on a loam ground in order to investigate the influences of the plate size and the loading rate on the observed load-settlement relations. Two circular plates having diameters of 0.3 m and 1.0 m were used. Three types of loading methods were employed; 1) static cyclic maintained load test, 2) static continuous load test, and 3) rapid (dynamic) plate load test. An interpretation method called non-linear damping method was used to estimate a static load-settlement relation from the rapid plate load test signals. The derived static load-settlement relations match well with the measured results from the static load tests.

The effects of hydrogen on the properties of binary Ti-A1 alloys containing 2.5, 5, and 7 pct aluminum and ternary alloys of the same compositions with added interstitial elements oxygen, nihrogen, and carbon were studied. Aluminum increases the apparent hydrogen solubility of the a-phase, resulting in a marked increase in resistance to impact embrittlement. In the Ti-5Al and Ti-7Al alloys, for example, the addition of 180 and 305 ppm hydrogen, respectively, did not cause embrittlement, while unalloyed titanium was embrittled by as little as 75 ppm. The role of aluminum in increasing hydrogen solubility of the a-phase probably accounts for the excellent hydrogen tolerance of a-ß alloys containing considerable amounts of aluminum. There is some evidence that aluminum retards the rate of hydride precipitation. If so, these alloys may be susceptible to slow-strain embrittlement. UNALLOYED a-titanium is extremely sensitive to small amounts of added hydrogen in that there is a marked decrease in notch properties. For example, as little as 100 ppm hydrogen is sufficient to lower the room-temperature notch-impact strength from over 100 to less than 20 in.-lb.' In March of 2013, an undisclosed gold mine (MINE X), located in the Western United States, performed blast movement monitoring of three blasts occurring in one of two active pits. Blast Movement Monitors (BMMs) were placed in the bench before blasting, and located after the blast to determine vectors of movement. Using blast movement software, ore/waste boundaries were translated. These locations were compared to MINE X’s standard ore translation procedure, which consisted of moving polygon boundaries by 17.5 feet (5.3 m) in the burden direction of the blast hole pattern. This translation amount, identified by MINE X as “average” motion, had been ascertained by performing a previous blast movement study.

Gold placers in the Nokomai and Nevis valleys are dominantly Quaternary in age. They occur mainly in western tributaries of the upper Nevis, eastern tributaries of the middle and upper Nokomai, and in the trunk valleys themselves. Placer gold in both valleys is dominantly a-phase Au-Ag-Hg alloy. Au-Ag alloy is absent or rare in most of the deposits, except in the lower Nokomai. Alpha-Au-Ag-Hg alloy is typically coarse-grained (up to 2 cm), angular, and rarely flattened or folded. Crystalline texture, quartz intergrowths, and psuedo-hexagonal crystal-pluck cavities are common. Fluvial transport distance predicted from the maximum Flatness Index ofAu-Ag-Hg alloy particles is typically less than 10-20 km. Coarse (up to 2 cm) cinnabar is commonly associated with the Au-Ag-Hg alloy, and both were probably derived from hydrothermal sources in western tributaries ofthe upper Nevis and eastern tributaries of the upper Nokomai. Minor secondary Au-Ag-Hg alloy occurs locally in the lower Nokomai, where it coats or cements detrital a-phase Au-Ag-Hg and Au-Ag alloy particles. Au-Ag alloy dominates over Au-Ag-Hg alloy in the lower half of the lower Nokomai alluvial plain and gravel of a raised channel incised into semischist basement adjacent to the plain. The Au-Ag alloy is rounded and commonly flattened and folded. Crystalline texture, quartz intergrowths, and pluck cavities are rare, and a fluvial transport distance of 25-40 km is estimated from maximum Flatness Index ofAu-Ag alloy particles. The Au-Ag alloy, three types of gamet, magnetite, clinozoisite and well foliated schist boulders in the abandoned channel are not found in the pumpellyite-actinolite facies bedrock in the Nokomai. These components were derived from greenschist facies schist and sedimentary sources in Otago, many tens of kilometers north of the Nokomai catchment. They were transported to the Nokomai either in Wakatipu Glacier till or fluvio-glacial outwash that entered the valley via Nokomai Saddle, the confluence with the Mataura, or both.

This paper describes in general terms AlcoaÆs goals, achievements and directions in applying Cleaner Production to enhance business performance in the economic, environmental and social dimensions. "As part of a major reconstruction and expansion of the Majdanpek Copper Mine, an investigation and optimization of the flotation collector regime was undertaken. The flotation response of the major minerals to various reagents and the effect of pulp chemistry was studied from both a fundamental and practical point of view. These studies led to plant trials and the eventual adoption of a modified collector suite which improved both copper and gold recoveries.INTRODUCTIONThe Majdanpek Copper Mine processes 40,000 tons per day of ore containing about 0.43% cu. In addition to copper, the ore also contains recoverable quantities of molybdenite and gold. The mine has been in operation since 1961 and is the largest in Yugoslavia. It is currently undergoing major reconstruction and expansion. The flowsheet of the Majdanpek concentrator is shown on Figure 1.The ore body is variable in composition and changes in mill feed require proper control of operating variables to achieve the optimum metallurgical results. A detailed study including grindability, flotation response, and solid-liquid separation was carried out on several samples of the ore. Flotation response and the choice of reagent chemistry were found to be very important in achieving the highest recoveries of metal values. An automatic reagent control scheme insured that optimum dosages were used in the plant.The flotation collectors used at the present time include sodium isopropyl xanthate (SIPX), AERO 3302 Promoter and AERO 5415 Promoter. The addition of AERO 5415 to the reagent suite is a recent development and was based on the favorable results obtained in the extensive laboratory testing program conducted to establish the optimum reagent combination and dosages. Subsequent plant tests confirmed that AERO 5415 provided significant improvements in copper and gold recoveries. A description of the mineralogy of the Majdanpek ore and details of laboratory and plant metallurgical data are given in this paper. The chemistry of AERO 5415 Promoter and its interaction with minerals relevant to Majdanpek ore are also discussed."

The Late Archaean of South AustraliaÆs Gawler Craton contains significant potential for gold resources. The main targets of interest are migmatised gold style systems of which the Challenger deposit is the best known example. This deposit is one of the lower cost gold producers in Australia due to the high-grade, low-tonnage nature of the mineralisation. Structurally controlled, metamorphosed deposit styles are also possible throughout the Archaean of the Gawler Craton, including occurrences within reactivated shear zones. More typical, lower metamorphic grade orogenic gold styles are also possible within greenstone host sequences identified in the central and southern parts of the Gawler Craton.

These proceedings consist of papers presented at three Bureau of Mines Technology Transfer Seminars on ergonomics in the mining industry. These seminars were held in December 1981, and covered topics relating to ergonomics and mining in the areas of the man-machine interface, and design of the work environment. This area of research is directed toward reducing accidents traditionally associated with human error.

Traditional loading systems have relied for many years on wheel and track loaders, power shovels, conveyor belts, and more recently, hydraulic front shovels. Each has certain advantages and disadvantages, depending largely on job conditions. Hydraulic backhoes were introduced several years ago as still another truck loading option. At first, buckets were small and backhoe use was limited to small earthmoving projects. Now, as backhoes are equipped with shorter sticks and bigger buckets to move larger quantities of earth. The "mass excavation" concept offers an excellent truck loading option in many situations. System Development and Advantages Mass excavation was first used successfully by contractors in site development and highway construction, loading both on-highway and off-highway trucks. Operators were able to take advantage of the excavator's ability to work in poor underfoot conditions and dig in tough materials. The technique was first applied to mining in the kaolin mines of central Georgia. Kaolin, one of the world's most abundant minerals, is used to make paper, paint, ceramics, rubber, plastics, and many other products. Since kaolin clay is slippery when wet, load-out with wheel loaders is very inefficient. Also, kaolin is found in very spotty deposits due to the weathering process involved in its formation. Consequently, draglines are also impractical for kaolin mining since they don't have the mobility to move between clay deposits. In response to these mining conditions and kaolin characteristics, mines began using excavators in mass excavation as early as 1976. They have developed a system that takes advantage of the excavator's •high penetration and breakout force in tight materials; •fast-cycling hydraulics; •ability to work in poor underfoot conditions; and •mobility in comparison to draglines. This loading method has been successful in Georgia's kaolin mines and now can be applied to other mining operations as well. The disposal of scrap tires has been a serious environmental problem. The treatment of this waste by pyrolysis and combustion has advantages since the landfill space is dwindling and the production of fuel becomes of technological interest. However, that processes needs a rigid control of emissions. This work presents a study of the light hydrocarbon gases (HC) generated during the burn of waste tire chips in a two-stage laminar-flow horizontal furnace. Different temperatures in the primary and secondary stage of the furnace were tested, and the oxygen/nitrogen percentage was also varied during the combustion process. A gas chromatograph was used to identify and quantify the components of the gaseous products of combustion and pyrolysis. The results showed the behavior of the gases during the burn of tires, providing valuable information to the control of hydrocarbon emissions.

Underground mine planning practices are typically manual and time consuming and will often produce sub-optimal solutions due to the application of generic rule-of-thumb assumptions or ?tried and tested? choices. The development of computer-automated tools for underground mine planning enable a wide range of scenarios to be considered rapidly in arriving at an optimised solution, subject to input assumptions. We have applied these tools to demonstrate ?optimised? solutions that challenge industry standard practices. Further, we have incorporated grade and price/cost uncertainty into these tools to gain an understanding on how the consideration of uncertainty may further alter strategy selection. Finally, we enable the tools to dynamically adjust cut-off grades in conjunction with the evolution of prices/cost.

A 16.5-kt/d underground molybdenum mine is being developed at Questa in northern New Mexico by Molycorp Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Union Oil Company of California. The new $200-million underground project will revitalize mining and milling activity at Questa, where small scale underground mining first began in 1920. Large scale open-pit mining was initiated in 1965 but now, because of the high stripping ratio, surface mining is being phased out. Construction of the underground mine began in 1979, and first produc¬tion is scheduled for early 1983. The company expects full capacity-9 Gg of molybdenum per year-to be reached in 1984.

The borate industry is one of the few sectors of the mining and mineral-processing industry which the United States still dominates. Since about 1927, the United States has supplied over half of the world's total boron and borate raw materials, and many of the chemical derivatives as well. Chiefly responsible for this record are companies producing sodium borates from two large deposits in southern California, at Boron (Kramer) and Searles Lake. The sodium borates, or products derived from borax and borax-containing brines, are the preferred borates for industry because they are soluble in water and combine readily with most other chemicals. Calcium borates (or sodium-free compounds) are required for certain end uses, but in general, nonsodium borates are used only where borax is not avail- able. During the past hundred years, the use of boron compounds throughout the world has risen from a few tons per year to the equivalent of about a million tons of B2O3. Leadership in supplying borates has shifted from country to country and from region to region during this period, generally as the result of the development of newly discovered deposits that were better in quality, more accessible, or more economically exploitable than previous sources (Table 1). Primary Products and End Uses The principal borate products offered by primary producers in the United States are listed in Table 2. In general, these products are utilized worldwide by almost all consumers, regardless of the original source of the primary borates. In the United States, the primary borates all originate in southern California. Colemanite is produced as crude or processed crude ore from the Death Valley area and is utilized by the fiber glass and ceramic industries without further treatment. Production from Searles Lake, Calif., is from brines that are processed in chemical plants where borax and other compounds are recovered and the principal borate products are produced. At Boron, Calif., the world's leading producer is mining a deposit of mineral borax and operating a chemical refinery. The mineral borax is mined together with included clay, and refined borax or "lo-mol" is one of the refinery products. The mineral and the chemical compound are identical, Na2B4O7- lOH2O. In addition to ship- ping all major refined borate products from Boron, the company ships semiprocessed ore concentrates to treatment plants elsewhere.

Impala Platinum, the second largest platinum producer in the world, is embarking on a major expansion strategy to increase its platinum output from 1.95 moz to 2.8 moz by the year 2008. The smelter complex, situated in Rustenburg, will undergo substantial modifications, and will require a solution to the capture and treatment of the smelter off-gases and dust produced during smelting and converting operations. One of the solutions explored was an integrated approach, where all the off-gases from both the primary smelting electric furnaces and the converter operations are routed to a large central gas cleaning and double catalysis, double absorption acid plant. In-line sulphur burning, utilizing a highly flexible LURO1spin cup burner with a turn down ratio of 50%, ensures that the acid plant operates independently of operating conditions at the smelter complex.

Everyone in the coal industry from top management to the preparation engineer is vitally interterested in recovering as much salable coal as possible from the run-of-mine product. Coal losses from a preparation plant occur in the solid refuse material being discharged from the plant and in the bleed-off slurry from the water circuit. The refuse is generally hauled from the plant in solid form by trucks, conveyors, or aerial trams to the refuse or culm banks or it may be crushed and transported by hydraulic methods to refuse ponds or dams. The loss of coal in refuse material and the extent of this problem has been covered in another paver.' The loss of salable coal in the plant bleed-off slurry is one of the water circuit problems in coal preparation plants. Slurries originate at various places in the processing circuits and are usually disposed of by transportation to waste ponds known as slurry ponds. Even though the combustible material discharged as slurry and refuse from the plant is labeled a loss, the loss must only be considered temporary. There is a tendency at the present time to examine refuse and slurry losses and to reprocess these materials to recover valuable coal. Slurries from eight bituminous coal preparation plants in central and western Pennsylvania have been sampled and examined to determine the amount of recoverable coal in each. Examinations of the samples were made to determine the tons per hour of solids and the gallons per minute of water in the slurry; the size, ash, and sulfur analyses of the solids; and the sink-float characteristics of the larger solids. The extreme fines (—325 mesh material) from one of the samples has been examined further to determine the micron size fractions as well as the ash and sulfur content of the micron sizes. Collection of the Samples: Field trips were made to each of the plants where samples were obtained and discussions held with the preparation engineer prior to sampling. The flowsheet of the plant operation was studied and a time-period selected to obtain a representative sample. At least 20 1-gal samples of total plant bleed-off suspensions were collected at each plant in increments over designated periods belived to be typical of the plant flow Three of the samples were obtained from plants in the Pittsburgh area. Each plant supplied information on the capacity, operating time, type of cleaning equipment used, water and material balances, and auxiliary equipment. From the time required to collect given amounts of slurry and from the amount of solids in the slurry, total solids discharges from the plant were calculated and compared with the plant flow. Ash and sulfur analyses of the total solids were also checked, at some plants, with company figures. In all cases where checks could be made there was reasonable agreement between company figures and those reported here. Analysis of the Slurries: Representative fractions of properly agitated samples were examined in the laboratory to determine the specific gravities of the slurries. The solids and water were separated by filtration to check the weight of each so that the percent of solids in the pulp could be determined. From the resulting data, presented in Table I, it may be seen that the percent solids in the slurries ranges from 2.8 to 39.0 and the amount of solids from 2.61 to 45.61 tph. Size Analysis of Solids: Representative fractions of the slurries were permitted to settle and the clear water was removed by siphoning. The solids were then wet-screened at 28, 35, 48, 65, 100, 150, 200 and 325 mesh. Results of the size analyses are presented in Table 11. These results indicate the extreme variation of sizes and in most cases the degree of fineness of the solids. The amount of —325 mesh ranges from 22.5 to 84.5 pct and the amount of+200 mesh from 8.3 to 69.1 pct.

This article revisits global projections made in 1981of eight metallic and fertilizer minerals for the year 2000. The objectives here are to quantify the differences between the projected and observed levels of consumption for the year 2000 for eight of the 26 nonfuel minerals covered in the earlier study. An attempt is then made to attribute these (often) large differences to the major determinants of minerals demand — income, technological, regulatory and other policy changes, and changes in the recycling rates of the metallic minerals. The eight minerals covered are aluminum, copper, iron, mercury, nickel, phosphate rock, potash and tin. This summary article presents the actual population, gross domestic product (GDP) and per capita GDP changes from 1970 to 2000, compared with the projected rates for these important determinants of mineral use, along with the observed growth rates of minerals consumption for the eight nonfuel minerals included in this study. When the projections are compared with the observed global consumption levels for the year 2000, the differences range from +43 percent for nickel to +229 percent for potash.
