The manganese ore deposits of the Gold Coast, British West Africa, occur in very ancient rocks, of both sedimentary and metamorphic types. In certain respects they have a strong resemblance to those of India and Brazil, as contrasted with those of Tertiary age in Georgia, but in this paper no careful comparison with them can be made. Viewed from the present condition of the manganiferous rocks, the oldest deposits are in the sediments. Later than these are the progressively metamorphosed representatives of these sediments. Youngest are the products of decay and degradation with the concentration of manganese oxide in the rocks of both groups. The oldest occurrences are in argillaceous and siliceous phyllites and slates, which show only a moderate degree of metamorphism. They belong to a series which also includes mudstones, sandstones, grits, conglomerates and subordinate limestones, with tuffs and lava-flows, largely of basic types. This has been named the Birrim System. Its age is unknown, for no definite fossils have been discovered in it. Since these non-fossiliferous strata at many plaees are of a character which in many parts of the world are suitable for the preservation of fossils, and which contain them, it is assumed that the Gold Coast deposits are pre-Cambrian. These rocks of the Birrim System have normally a northeast-southwest strike, and are folded, but not to any very great degree except in certain belts. From the Eastern Province of the Gold Coast they may be traversed diagonally across their strike for upwards of 600 miles, to the extreme northwestern corner of the Northern Territories. Thence they probably extend much farther into French territory.

A series of experiments were carried out in which the rates of propagation of the liquidus and the eutectic fronts Mere measured during essentially one-dimensional freezing of Al-Cu alloys. The dimensions of the ingots were 3 by 5 by 6 in. Three different alloys containing 0.1, 4.5, and 17 pct Cu were used in these experitments. For each alloy the rate of heat removal was varied to give a total jreezing time in the range 3 to 30 min. The results of these measurements cowlpared favorably with the theoretical model of freezing of binary alloys with time-dependent surface temperature. IN engineering analysis of solidification of commercia1 steels and nonferrous alloys it is a common practice to assume that an alloy freezes by propagation of an isothermal solidification front, i.e., essentially as a pure metal. In two recent theoretical investigations'j2 the present authors explored the possibility of a more realistic approach to the problem of solidification of alloys. In the proposed model the freezing of an alloy is assumed to take place by propagation of two isothermal fronts, i.e., the liquidus front and the solidus (or eutectic) front. The region between the two fronts contains both liquid and solid and is referred to as the solid-liquid region. The width and the solid content of the solid-liquid region vary with alloy type, solute concentration, and cooling rate. For a given alloy system, initial concentration of solute, and the mode of heat removal, the proposed model yields the temperature distribution within the solid skin, temperature, solid fraction, and concentration distributions with the solid-liquid region, and the rates of propagation of the liquidus and the solidus fronts. This model is obviously of considerable practical importance in engineering analysis of solidification processes, since it gives a more realistic estimate of skin strength during solidification and a better estimate of the total freezing time. Before the new model can be used with confidence, however, it is necessary to test this model experimentally. The experimental testing of the proposed model is a relatively simple matter since the effects to be measured are large and a relatively simple experiment will suffice. The theoretical model predicts, for example, that during freezing of an alloy containing substitutional type solute (negligible diffusion in the solid during freezing) the solid-liquid region occupies an appreciable portion of the ingot, even at low concentration of solute.' IMD retical model, easily verifiable by experiment, is that the rate of propagation of the solidus (or eutectic) front increases as the solidus front approaches the center of the slab. This prediction is contrary to well-known behavior of the solidification front during freezing of pure metals, where the rate of propagation of the solidification front decreases with time and freezing is completed at the lowest rate. A rather severe test of the proposed model is provided by comparison of theoretical predictions and experimental measurements of the effects of cooling rate and composition on the rates of propagation of the liquidus and the eutectic fronts. In order to test the soundness of the formulation and the method of solution of the problem of solidification of alloys a series of experiments were carried out in which the rates of propagation of the liquidus and the eutectic fronts were measured during essentially one-dimensional solidification of A1-Cu alloys. The A1-Cu system was chosen strictly as a matter of convenience. Three different alloys containing 0.1, 4.5, and 17 pct Cu were used in these experiments. For each alloy the rate of heat removal was varied to give the total freezing time in the range 3 to 30 min. The results of these measurements are compared with the predictions of the theoretical model of solidification of binary alloys, with time-dependent surface temperature.' Before the experiments described in this paper were undertaken, a serious attempt was made to utilize the measurements of previous investigators to test the theoretical model. In the course of this preliminary study a careful review was made of experiments of Pellini and coworkers3 and Doherty and Melf~rd.~ The measurements in Pellini's work were carried out using a steel containing at least four major components. Evaluation of the solid fraction-temperature relation for this steel (required in the theoretical model) is difficult and uncertain. Doherty and Melford, on the other hand, measured the solid fraction-temperature relation experimentally, but did not give sufficient data to explore the effects of composition and the cooling rates on solidification. Hence it was not possible to utilize these measurements to test our theoretical model. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD The experimental technique used in this investigation differs somewhat from the more conventional techniques employed in solidification studies. This technique was developed primarily to eliminate con-vective mixing in the molten metal caused by pouring of molten metal into the mold. In our experiments A1-Cu alloys were melted directly in the mold. The mold assembly used in solidification experiments is shown in Fig. 1. The mold was fabricated from *-in. stainless-steel sheet. The Kotchkar mining-district, known as the Kotchkar System, is situated in the Orenburg government, in Eastern Russia, in the great plateau- or steppe-country immediately adjacent to the eastern slopes of the Ural mountains. Its longer dimension is north and south about 27 miles, while in the widest (northern) portion the distance across is 22 miles. The district lies 40 miles southwest of Miass, a station of the Trans-Siberian railway, and half-way between this village and that of Troitsk. It contains also the not inconsiderable settlements of Kotchkar and Eosobrodskoit., the last a Kossak town. So far as explored, the district is known to contain from 300 to 400 auriferous veins. ? Although the topography is generally of an exceedingly flat character, the country is traversed by several small rivulets running from west to east, and flowing into the Sanarka and Kamenka rivers. Since 1844 placers have been worked in the district, but it was not until 1867 that veins were discovered, and these have been worked only since the impoverishment of the alluvial deposits. The deposit with which this paper especially deals is known as the Ouspensky mine, one of twelve owned by MM. de Zelenkoff & Cie., five of which are situated in the Kotchkar System. An opportunity of visiting this mine was afforded the writers, in eonnection with an excursion of the VII. session of the International Geological Congress; held in Russia during the summer of 1897. The zero-points-of-charge of apatite, calcite, and fluorite are pH 6.4, 10.8, and 10.0, respectively. Scheelite is negatively charged above at least pH 3. In this article, the flotation responses of these minerals in the presence of potassium oleate and sodium silicate are described and compared with electrokinetic data. Colloidal silica appears to be the species principally responsible for calcite depression, while silicate anion is the species responsible for fluorite depression. Additions as high as 1 x 10-3 mole/liter silicate have no effect on the flotation responses of apatite and scheelite. Selective flotation of nonmetallic minerals is difficult to achieve with fatty acids or soaps by themselves. As a result, specific reagents are added to aid these separations, and one of the reagents commonly employed for this purpose is sodium silicate. Flotation separations of various calcium-bearing minerals such as fluorite from calcite1-3 and scheelite from calcite2,4 and apatite,2,5 for example, almost always involve the use of sodium silicate. The mechanisms by which sodium silicate functions as a depressant are still not understood, probably for a number of reasons. For one thing, the dissolution process of sodium silicate is complex, giving rise to a number of ionic and colloidal species.' Moreover, the type and concentration of these species depend on the ratio of Na2O to SiO2, the concentration of sodium silicate, and the pH of the system.' At the present time, it is not known which species, colloidal silica or silicate anion, is responsible for depression. If colloidal silica is the species that is adsorbing, then adsorption must occur by electrostatic attraction between the colloid and the mineral surface. Silicate anion, on the other hand, may adsorb either physically or chemically. The objective of this paper is to determine first the active species of sodium silicate and then the conditions under which this species will adsorb and function as a depressant. EXPERIMENTAL MATERIALS AND METHODS Pure samples of apatite (Durango), calcite (Iceland-spar), fluorite, and scheelite were used in this investigation. Pure potassium oleate was used as collector, while reagent-grade HC1 and KOH were employed for pH adjustment. The sodium silicates used were samples obtained from the Philadelphia Quartz Co. In one series of experiments, various sodium silicates containing different ratios of SiO2 to Na2O were added to calcite systems. These sodium silicates contained SiO2-to-Na2O ratios of 3.75 to 1, 3.22 to 1, 2.40 to 1, and 1.60 to 1. All other experiments were conducted with the sodium silicate containing the ratio of 3.22 to 1, which is the one that is normally used in industry. Flotation experiments were conducted with 21/2-g charges of 48 x 150-mesh material in conductivity water with an apparatus and technique described previously. Electrokinetic experiments were conducted with both a Zeta Meter and streaming potential apparatus. Particle size was 48 x 65 mesh for the streaming potential experiments. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS The first series of experiments involved flotation of scheelite in the absence and presence of sodium silicate. As shown in Fig. 1, flotation response was not affected with even the relatively high addition of 1 x 10-3 mole per liter sodium silicate. Interestingly though, no flotation was effected below pH 6 with this collector addition. The responses of apatite to flotation under these same conditions are given in Fig. 2. Similarly, no depression was obtained in basic media under these conditions. Similar experiments were conducted with fluorite, and in this case, depression was noted above about pH 11 with 1 x 10-3 mole per liter sodium silicate (Fig. 3). When calcite was floated with these same levels of addition of sodium silicate, essentially no flotation was possible above pH 7 (Fig. 4). THERE has been interest recently in the conditions under which dislocation pipe diffusion may be observed. In order to extend the measurements to temperatures below Tm/2, where pipe diffusion becomes more important, a chemical sectioning technique was developed for silver single crystals which makes possible the removal of layers of 100A or less. The procedure is briefly as follows. Silver single crystals of 99.995 pct purity were cut in the form of discs t by 4 in., electropolished, and electropolated with Ag110 to about 1000A thickness. The thickness was determined by calibrating the activity with the weight of heavier platings, up to 10,000A. Both diffused and undiffused samples were sectioned in a two-step process. Reaction with a solution of iodine in alcohol formed a thin, even layer of AgI, which was then dissolved in a KCN solution. The reaction rate of the iodine solution varied slightly over a period of time, so that the thickness of the stripped layers, while quite even and regular for a given specimen, ranged from 65 to l00W for different specimens. This variation was checked by using a thickly plated standard with each run. Layer thickness was determined from undiffused samples by the point where the layer activity drops to half the maximum. This maximum intensity also provides, with appropriate corrections, the initial concentration per layer co. Because of the small penetration distances, it is necessary to use the exact solution of Fick's law for a source of finite thickness.' For a plating of thick- where c is the concentration at depth x. flj the error function, D the apparent diffusion coefficient, and t the time. The diffusion coefficient was obtained from the concentration-penetration data by extrapolating to x = 0 where c/co = erf h/2(Dt)1/2 Enough points were taken to impart confidence in the accuracy of the intersection, generally about ten layers. Four temperatures were used as in Table I. For best accuracy, t and h were chosen to give values of the parameter (Dt)1/2/h between 1.0 and 1.7. A typical concentration-penetration curve is shown in Fig. 1. The diffusion coefficients calculated from Eq. [I] are plotted in Fig. 2. For comparison, the high-temperature data of Tomizuka and sonder 2 which go down to 630°C are plotted as the solid line 2(a) from their expression D = 0.40 exp (-44,090/RT). Also for comparison, the lowest temperature point of Hoffman and Tumbull3 is plotted. It is apparent that our data diverge appreciably from the high-temperature extrapolation by 373°C. Raymond Weir Smyth, born Nov. 3, 1888, was the son of Herbert Weir Smyth, professor of Greek Literature at Harvard University. He graduated (A. B.) from Harvard in 1909 and later pursued advanced studies there in chemistry and in metallurgy. He held the position of metallurgist for the American Steel and Wire Co. at Worcester, Mass., and also for the Steel and Tube Co. at Youngstomn, Ohio. For a time he was inspector of munitions for the British Government and stationed at the Railway Steel and Spring Co. at Latrobe, Pa. For a short time, in 1917, he was Inspector of Ordnance for the U. S. Government, and the following year, having entered the U. S. Naval Reserve Force, he was ordered in a similar capacity to the Midvale Steel Co. In September, he removed to the Navy Yard, League Island, Philadelphia, to train for the obligatory minimum of six months' sea duty. There he contracted influenza, which was followed by pneumonia, from which he died, September 27, at the Navy Yard Hospital. Sunnyside Mines, owned and operated by the Kaiser Steel Corporation, are situated near the city of Price, Utah. The complex comprises three adjacent mines, named simply Nos. 1, 2 and 3, all connected underground. Two seams, the upper and lower Sunnyside have been worked. These dip at about 10 percent to the north-east. The surface cover is variable due to the mountainous nature of the topography. The Sunnyside upper seam varies from 5 1/2 ft (1.7m) to 9 ft (2.7m) In thickness whilst the lower seam remains at about 6ft (1.8m). The separation between the two seams has ranged from 7 to 45 ft over the mined area (2 to 14m). Longwall mining has been practiced at Sunnyside for over 20 years due to difficulties of roof control encountered when using the roan and pillar system. Number 3 mine is bounded on the north and south sides by mines Number 1 and 2 respectively. Whilst current production is concentrated into Number 1 mine, much of the future of the complex lies in the further development of deeper reserves in Number 3 mine. Workings in this latter mine were curtailed in 1978 due to difficulties in ventilation. Present developments are ventilated partially from the neighboring Number 2 mine where no workings are in progress. The layout of Number 3 mine is illustrated on the schematic Figure 1. Trunk airways extend down dip from the surface at No. 2 Canyon and the Water Canyon for a distance of some 9,600 ft. (2930m). The area between the two sets of trunk airways has been worked extensively in both seams as have the corresponding reserves on either side in the connected adjacent mines. At the present time exhausting fans are sited at the top of a shallow shaft in No. 2 Canyon and an 8 ft (2.4m) diameter shaft sunk to a depth of 1013 ft (310m) closer to the current developments (Figure 1). The current airflow system, even with an additional 116,000 cfm (55m3/s) entering from No. 2 Mine, is adequate only for the development work now in progress but will be unable to support new longwall faces further downdip. The basic ventilation problem of this mine may be stated quite simply. In a situation where all intake and return airways pass through extensive old workings, a ventilation system design was required that would be effective, efficient and economic for the foreseeable future of the mine. ORGANIZATION OF THE PLANNING PROCEDURE The procedure followed during the study is illustrated on Figure 2. Initial ventilation surveys established the current state of the airflow system and provided the necessary data for setting up a Basic Network File in a computer store. The data in this file was a mathematical model of the ventilation system of the mine. The basic network was analysed by a ventilation network analysis program in order to correlate the measured and computed airflows and to establish the basic network as a true representation of the mine as it stood at the time of the surveys. The network model could then be extended to simulate the future development of the mine and alternative ventilation designs investigated. The remaining sections of the paper outline the work involved in each of these main phases of the planning procedure. VENTILATION SURVEYS Conduct of Surveys Two types of measurements were conducted simultaneously throughout the air-carrying routes of the mine: (i) Airflow measurements were made by anemometer traverse or smoke tube at 221 selected stations. Anemometer traverses were repeated at each station until at least three gave results to within 5 per cent. (ii) Pressure drop measurements were made across ventilation doors, regulators and, wherever possible, across stoppings. Additionally, frictional pressure drops were measured along airways where such pressure drops were significant (above 0.01 inches of water gauge or 2.5 Pa over a 100m distance). The trailing hose method was used to determine these frictional pressure drops. This involved laying out 100m of abrasive resistant plastic tubing (3 mm internal diameter) with a 4 ft. pitot-static tube facing into the airflow at either end and a low range pressure gauge connected into the line. The trailing hose method was preferred to the alternative barometer technique for this study because of (a) the relative ease of access between measuring points and (b) the greater accuracy within individual airways. The anemometers used were Davis Biram Type A/2-3" (30 to 5,000 ft/min) and Airflow Developments AM-5000 digital (50 to 5,000 ft/min). The pressure gauges employed were Dwyer magnehelic instruments. These were preferred to liquid in glass manometers because of their portability and dependability under adverse mining conditions. A checklist of the equipment used in the survey is given in Appendix 1. The instruments were calibrated before and after the surveys in the mine ventilation laboratory at the University of California, Berkeley. THE partial excess entropy of interstitial solutes in metals, SXS , has usually been interpreted as being principally vibrational ever since the initial statistical treatment of hydrogen in metals by Fowler and Smith-ells. The vibrational entropy is considered being due to the optical modes of the light interstitial atom. Little attention has been given to the magnitudes of the values of SXS'. Leiser and Witte2 and Ebisuzaki and O'Keeffe3 have noted that for hydrogen in metals Si is approximately constant for different metals. On the other hand if it is assumed that the interstitial solute is an isotopic defect then, as shown by McLellan, SXS should vary from metal to metal as follows: where S is the standard entropy of the solvent and Mi, M, are the masses of the interstitial and solvent atoms. respectively. Fair agreement with this equation was found for oxygen in silver and nitrogen in iron4 and for carbon in iron.= Ln a subsequent analysis of metal- hdrogen systems McLellan' found a variation of $' from metal to metal but not in a manner expected from the isotopic impurity equation. However, a possible correlation between the energy of solution, Ei, and sf was noted. Meeting of Jan. 23, 1914.-The President reported the appointment of Arthur S. Dwight and E. Gybbon Spilsbury as tellers to canvass the votes for the Annual Election of Directors. The President reported the appointment of the Committee on Precious and Base Metals, reorganized in accordance with the list on page xlvi. . The Treasurer was authorized to invest the sum of approximately $1,000, accruing from the sale of Life Memberships during the past year, by the purchase of one gold bond of the Interborough Rapid Transit Co., due 1966, at 5 per cent. The By-Laws of the San Francisco Local Section were approved. The recommendation of the Lord Kelvin Memorial Fund Committee that the balance of the fund unexpended be applied to the establishment of a Kelvin Gold Medal was approved. Forty-two members who had paid up all arrears of clues were reinstated. The sum of $100 was appropriated to the Columbia Local Section. The price of each of the three Volumes of Transactions of the year 1913 was established as $5 in paper and $6 in half-morocco. Forty-three Members, One Associate and four Junior Members were elected to membership in their respective classes.

GERARD B. ROSENBLATT,* Salt Lake City, Utah (written discussion?). -Mr. Eschholz attacks this problem from what appears to me to be the proper angle. He does not limit his viewpoint to the attainment of ideal results under conditions approximating laboratory practice, but rather discusses actual commercial conditions that must be maintained in large-scale operations, where continuity of service without expert attendance is one of the prime considerations. I am of the opinion that Mr. Eschholz has not given sufficient consideration to the commercial possibilities of what he describes as System B, the use of low-tension a.-c. industrial or lighting circuits for supplying power to Cottrell treaters through the medium of a step-up transformer and a synchronously driven rectifier, without the use of motor-generators. It is true that, to date, few installations on a large scale have used this system, but I believe that when the conditions of power supply are suitable, and when proper precautions are taken, this system can be used successfully and to advantage. where at present it is considered necessary to use motor-generator sets. In the average commercial Cottrell installation of any size, the motor-generator set is used for two purposes: (1) To isolate the industrial supply circuit from the Cottrell circuit. (2) To. afford, an easily operated and smooth system of control for the Cottrell treater voltage With proper engineering, both of these objects can be accomplished without the use of motor-generator sets.

IN a brief summary of the many occurrences of fluorspar in our western states, it is not possible to go into detail in regard to the geology, mining and milling methods, and reserves about individual deposits. Rather a broad review is made of the occurrences and an analysis of how the western deposits may fit into our future domestic economy is presented. GENERAL STATEMENT ON FLUORSPAR SITUATION Fluorspar has been used for years as a flux in the manufacture of basic open-hearth steel, in foundry cupolas for melting pig iron, in the manufacture of opalescent glass and in the preparation of hydrofluoric acid. In 1880 the annual production of fluorspar in the United States was around 4000 tons per year. By 1900 it was up to 21,656 tons and between 1902 and 1908 it averaged about 40,000 tons annually. Prices were then so low, by present standards, that it seems impossible to believe now that mining could have been performed profitably at the price levels then prevailing. In 1890 fluorspar sold at the mines for $6.70 per ton, in I901 for $5.81, in 1916 for $5.92. When the United States entered World War I, fluorspar production and price skyrocketed; the production reached 263,817 tons in 1918, with prices above $20.00 per ton, and prices were even higher in 1919 and 1920. After 1920, the domestic production fell from the 1918 level to about 125,000 tons annually and the average price dropped back to about $I8.00 per ton. By 1935 the average price had fallen to $15.00, but in 194o with a rising demand the average price of all grades had gone back up to $20.31. Today it is 75 per cent higher than in 1940 and presumably the price of acid grade at least would be even higher if it were not for price ceilings. The first subsequent year that the domestic production exceeded that of 1918 was 1941, and the 1944 production is expected to exceed 400,000 tons, 'or over one and a half times that of 1918. In five-year periods, average production and imports were as are shown in Table I. [ ] Many people concerned with the consumption of fluorspar believe that the postwar period ahead will show a repetition of price trends of the last such period. They believe that imports will be- again an important factor in the available supply and the price will fall back gradually toward the prewar level. The following basic factors are pertinent in analyzing this conclusion:

Composite structure of hafnium, zirconium, and titanium diboride with additions of metals and/or compound phases were prepared by reactive high-pressure hot pvessing and evaluated in air and in mixtures of oxygen and helium at temperatures up to 2400°K and at linear flow rates of 0.1 to 0.2 ft per sec stp. Oxidation characteristics, principally depth of conversion of diboride to dioxide, were determined by a gas analysis method and by postoxidation metallo-graphic analyses. The best oxidation resistance was observed for hafnium diboride-silicon carbide composite which exhibited a 6-mil conversion to dioxide for a 1-hv oxidation in air at 2200°K compared to a 20-mil recession for hafnium diboride with no additive. Analogous improvements in oxidation resistance were observed for the addition of silicon carbide to zirconium. EARLIER investigationof the oxidation behavior of the diborides of the transition elements of Groups IVA and VA in flowing gas mixtures have produced a ranking of these compounds according to which HfB2 is the most oxidation-resistant followed in turn by ZrB2 > TiB2 > TaBz > NbB2. Other ~tudies~-~ have examined the physical, thermal, and thermodynamic properties of these diborides to provide a sound basis for the more detailed and specialized investigations which are required to generate the information needed to assess the usefulness of such materials in high-temperature oxidizing environments. Recent oxidation studies7 have examined the effect of variations of metal and boron content on the oxidation characteristics of zirconium and hafnium diboride in flowing gas mixtures including air and helium plus oxygen. Results obtained in the latter investigation confirmed the superior oxidation resistance of HfB2 over ZrB2. Moreover, metal-rich compositions of hafnium diboride showed improved oxidation resistance over boron-rich compositions at temperatures up to 2000°K; at higher temperatures the differences are not distinguishable. In particular HfBI.7 exhibited a diboride to dioxide conversion depth of 4 mils in 1 hr at 2000°K; HfB2. 2 exhibited a conversion depth of 16 mils for the same exposure.~ Specimens for the study of metal and boron stoichiometry on the oxidation characteristics of HfB2 and ZrB2 were prepared by high-pressure hot pressing, a specialized type of fabrication which produced dense crack-free bodies of the desired compositions with no significant impurity introductions. The purpose of the present investigation was to explore the possibility of further improving the oxidation resistance of the metal-rich ZrB, and HfB2. The plan to accomplish this objective was based in the formulation of several diboride compositions containing other compounds and phases which are generally known to have good oxidation resistance in one or more types of test environment. Ideally, such additives would also enhance or at least not diminish other boride property values principally mechanical strength and those parameters related to thermal stress resistance. The additions selected for HfBz included zirconium, aluminum, and (Ta + TaB2) designed to produce ternary metal diborides, hafnium to form a discrete HfB phase, chromium to provide a metal skeletal phase, (Hf + Si) to form a discrete hafnium silicide phase, and Sic to provide a discrete second phase. Additions to ZrB2 included A1 + B designed to produce a ternary metal diboride, Zr + Si to form a discrete zirconium silicide phase, and Sic to provide a discrete second phase. All the specimens were prepared by high-pressure hot pressing which was used to advantage to fabricate billets of the variety of compositions desired and suitable for oxidation testing. The present investigation also included the evaluation of high-pressure hot-pressed TiB2and TiB2-20 vol pct Sic, conventionally hot-pressed Boride 2,' and KT silicon carbide. Boride

The solidifzcation reactions in the Cu-Sn-As system were determined by microscopic examination, thermal analysis, and X-ray diffraction. The system presents no ternary compound. There is a quasi-binary section, of a simple eutectic type, between the compounds Cu5As2 and SnAs; the system presents, in addition, one ternary eutectic reaction, one ternary peritectic reaction, and seven transitional reactions. The temp-peratures corresponding to each of these reactions were determined, most of them with an accuracy of *lLC. The isothermal lines of the liquidus surface were also established for almost the entire diagram. NO reference was found in the literature relative to the Cu-Sn-As phase diagram and this is believed to be the first study on this subject. The Cu-Sn diagram was taken from Hansen and Anderko;' it is represented by Fig. 1, with the phase designation which will be used in the remainder of this work. For the Cu-As diagram, the solution proposed by Hansen and ~nderko' must be modified to take account of recent data, principally from Heyding and Despault~ and from Hume-Rothery and Burns; this yields the diagram represented by Fig. 2. As for the Sn-As diagram, it is not established with certainty, particularly so far as concerns the solid solubility of tin in arsenic and the solidification reactions near the compound SnsAsz. For this last point, Hansen and Anderko propose two solutions: congruent melting of Sn3Asz with a eutectic SnsAsZ + SnAs or incongruent melting implying a peri-tectic reaction L + SnAs = Sn3As2. Microscopic examination of the few binary alloys prepared in this composition range made us prefer the second of these solutions, which gives the diagram shown by Fig. 3. Since January 1959 a zinc refiner of novel design has been in operation at Blackwell, Okla., producing 99.995+ zinc from the output of the Blackwell horizontal retort smelter. The refiner is a continuously operated, pyro-metallurgical unit with principal dimensions horizonhl permitting one floor operation. It is very ruggedly constructed. Furthermore it is not subjected to deterioration from high concentrations of iron in the feed metal because the boiling units are separate from the rectification columns and constructed with silicon carbide brick arches through which the heat is transferred radiantly to the zinc. A zinc refiner of novel design has been in operation since January 1959 at the Blackwell, Okla. plant of the Blackwell Zinc Co., Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of American Metal Climax, Inc. Developed by the company's technical and operating staffs, the new refiner produces special high-grade zinc (nominally 99.995+ pct Zn) from the prime western1 slab output of the Blackwell horizontal retort smelter. The refiner is a continuously operated, pyromet-allurgical, high-capacity unit employing fractional distillation to separate zinc from its impurities, consisting principally of lead, cadmium, and iron. In prime western slab, these elements may vary in concentration from 0.005 to 1.6 pct. Table I shows the impurities usually encountered in the Blackwell prime western metal fed to the refiner together with their boiling points and vapor pressures at 907oC. The commercial pyrometallurgical smelting processes for extracting zinc from ore include distillation from retorts and a limited degree of refining can be accomplished by redistillation in similar retorts. To achieve special high-grade purity, an impractical number of batch redistillations would be required, however, with an accompanying loss of much metal. A continuously operated and integrated unit is required in which fractional vaporization and condensation can take place in a large number of stages. The first commercial continuously operated unit was developed by the New Jersey Zinc Co.4 In the separation of any two substances the degree of separation is limited if a mixture exists having a constant boiling point. The Zn-cd5 and Zn-pb6 systems contain no constant boiling points and hence these metals may be separated to any degree of purity. Basically, the pyrometallurgical refining of zinc involves three steps: a) iron, copper, and other metals having no appreciable vapor pressures at 907ºC concentrate in the bath when the impure zinc is boiled, b) lead, bismuth, antimony, and other metals having boiling points above but closer to that of zinc are selectively condensed from the vapor boiled from the bath, and c) cadmium and other metals having lower boiling points than zinc are fractionally distilled by reboiling and subsequent condensation of the zinc from the vapor. The boiling and condensation of zinc must be conducted in vessels constructed of materials which are refractory at the temperature involved (907 ºC) and it is highly desirable that they also be resistant to attack by the various metals. This requirement dictates construction from relatively small, simply shaped pieces which limits the pressures which may be employed to avoid leakage through the numerous joints. Stresses induced must be limited essentially to compressive ones and suitable provision must be made to permit thermal expansion of the components in order to minimize these stresses. Where heat is to be added for boiling or removed for condensation, refractory material through which the heat flows must have a high thermal conductivity. Silicon carbide is highly conductive but is subject to attack by iron and is expensive compared to other commonly employed refractories. A hard, dense aluminous fireclay is well suited to contain these metals where high thermal conductivity is not required. Zinc will penetrate the pores of fireclay brick but only to a limited depth in an exterior wall and has little effect other than an increase in weight and conductivity. The design objectives of the Amax refiner were: a) to achieve a long life by heavy, rugged construction and by employing silicon carbide refractories only where required for heat conductivity and not in contact with liquids of high iron concentrations, b) to simplify operation, manning and control by essentially horizontal construction, and c) to obtain high capacity in a single unit. While a number of papers have already been solicited, both members and nonmembers are hereby invited to submit additional papers, with the assurance that such papers will be given just as favorable consideration as the papers that have been requested. Mid-year meetings will be held at about the same time both in the Mid-Continent and California. The time will be selected if possible to coincide with the visits of President Lovejoy, who expects to be in California the last of September and in Texas early in October. Fort Worth, Dallas and Austin have been suggested for the Mid-Continent meeting. The Pacific Coast meeting will be held at Los Angeles. It is to be noted particularly that a Pacific Coast meeting was waived last year in favor of the annual meeting of the American Petroleum Institute, which was held at Los Angeles for the first time in nine years. It is hoped, and it was the understanding at the time among a number of individuals interested in both organizations, that in view of this action of the Petroleum Division the industry will give more than the usual support to the A.I.M.E. meeting this year.
