PULVERIZED coal was first used for firing cement kilns about 45 years ago, with such success that it has continued in general use. Based on cost, pulverized coal is usually the most economical fuel. In some localities natural gas or oil is cheaper, but 85.5 per cent of all cement kilns at present are fired with pulverized coal. The pulverized-coal flame is well suited to kiln conditions. Its soft, luminous nature gives it a high radiating property and the length of the flame can be readily varied to suit conditions in a kiln of any length. Ash and slag cause most of the difficulties incident to the burning of coal. In a cement kiln, however, the ash, being similar in composition to the raw mix and being deposited uniformly in the mix and clinker, occasions no difficulty as long as it remains constant in quality and quantity. Until 6 years ago almost all cement kilns using pulverized coal employed the bin system. The coal was dried and pulverized in a separate plant and delivered into a bin at the kiln. Thus the bin system requires driers, storage-type pulverizers, conveying systems, individual kiln bins, pulverized-coal feeders and primary air fans. The direct-fired system requires only a pulverizer and a blower. Fig. I shows typical plants. The first installations of direct-fired pulverizers were of the impact type but fineness of pulverization was both inadequate and variable. About 1927 a few direct-fired installations employing tube-type pulverizers were made, which were much more satisfactory. As more efficient pulverizers were developed from 1934 on, equipment for direct firing was installed at a large number of plants, until now 196 of about 900 kilns in use in the United States are direct-fired. Most of these replaced antiquated bin systems. PROCESS OF BURNING CEMENT CLINKERS The process of burning cement clinkers is fundamentally one of heat transfer. In boilers and other heat-exchange apparatus the area of the surface receiving heat from the gases is the best unit for comparing output. This seems to be equally true for kilns. The inside kiln surface is the heat-receiving surface and its area is used as the unit of kiln size in the following comparisons. Heat input is based on British thermal units in the fuel. E. G. Bailey,1 in his work on boiler-furnace heat absorption, has used the unit "B.t.u. available." This is the practical calorific power of the fuel, plus the heat in the air used for combustion. In other words, it is the heat available for useful work in the furnace or kiln. The unit of kiln output is barrels per hour. The composition of the raw mix, the percentage of water in the slurry of wet plants and hardness of burning all affect the output. These conditions, however, are hard to evaluate and probably have less effect on the output than irregularities of raw feed and clinker discharge and inexpert control of combustion. WET VS. ThE equilibrium phase diagram of the Mo-Cr system, described by anssen,' indicates that chromium and molybdenum form a continuous series of solid solutions above 1673K. The liquidus and solidus have been reported to have a minimum at about 12 at. pct Mo and 2133°K by Bloom and Grant2 and by Putnam, Potter, and Grant.3 X-ray studies by Trzebiatowski and ploszek4 and Baen and Duwez' revealed no indication of solid solution decomposition after long anneals at 1473", 1273", 923", and 873°K. However, Bloom and rant' by means of cooling and heating curve analysis of alloys containing up to 45 at. pct Mo found thermal effects at temperatures approximately 100" * 30°K below the liquidus. The only previous thermodynamic study of the Cr-Mo alloy system was made by Laffitte and Kuba-schewski6 who used the Knudsen effusion method at 1471°K. A serious disagreement as to the effect of titanium on the hardenability of steel exists in published references to this subject. Kramer, Hafner and Toleman reported' that acid-soluble titanium decreased creased the hardenability, with multiplying factors less than unity according to [ ] Grossmann's system for calculating hardenability from the composition. Crafts and Lamont, on the other hand, showed2 how titanium increased the hardenability, with multiplying factors up to nearly 1.7 for about o.' per cent titanium, though reducing the hardenability with higher titanium. Their data, however, were obtained almost exclusively from steels containing more than 2.4 per cent manganese, and thus should be considered as applying mainly to manganese steels. Likewise, the results of Kramer, Hafner and, Toleman regarding titanium are subject to the limitation that although they eliminated the effect of the insoluble titanium compounds from their calculations, they did not make a similar correction for the carbon that was combined with titanium and therefore occurred in a similarly ineffective form. It is suggested by the literature referred to that titanium may have different effects on hardenability, depending on the mode of its occurrence in the steel. The different effects on strength, ductility, etc., have already been discussed by the author.3 In the present discussion some comparisons, on the basis of hardenability as revealed by the Jominy end-quench test, are given between three titanium and two non titanium steels heat-treated in the same ways, and between other titanium steels heat-treated in several different ways. COMPARISON OF PLAIN-CARBON, VANADIUM AND TITANIUM STEELS The five steels used for these experiments were commercially melted and rolled products received in the form of 1.5-in. rounds from three different mills. Their analyses are given in Table I. Steels 2, 3, and 4 are from the same basic electric heat, containing 0.009 per cent of phosphorus and the same amount of sulphur. They were made by, adding aluminum and low-carbon ferrotitanium to different ingots. No. I is a plain-carbon coarse-grained S.A.E. 1040 steel made by the basic open-hearth -process. No. 5

WHEN I was a boy I walked into Fairbanks in 1905. I was but a soft chechako, and arrived with blisters covering my feet, as a result of "mushing" the 400-mile trail on foot. Because of them, the display windows of the trading posts were first to catch my eye-dog and horse collars, harness and sled parts! And because of my enthusiasm for things adventurous, I looked long upon the prospectors' gold pans, shovels, rifles, camp equipment, and what not. Today those windows are filled with motor car accessories, tires and repair parts; yes, even thermos bottles and vacuum cleaners! There were many chance meetings with little parties of prospectors in my youth, and it always set my blood to tingling. Sometimes it was a 70-year-old sun-baked son of the Arizona desert, wrangling his stubborn, faithful jenny away from some outfitting store, at others a shovel-ended poling b0at in northern Canada, \vith the partners and the dogs towing upstream along the bank, or an old sourdough, with tug-rope around neck and hand on the spruce sapling gee-pole, mushing along behind his two or three old, plodding malamutes, dragging a little Yukon sled piled high with rusty sheet-iron stove, pick and shovel, cross-cut saw and axe, rifle, bales of dog salmon, and other paraphernalia. These meetings envisioned the panning of old creek beds and draws in the search for as yet undiscovered pay-channels; they meant the toughest kind of work sinking a hole to bedrock in some far-away valley of promise; they suggested wood fires to thaw the frozen muck and gravel and crude windlass and hand-made tub to hoist the water and the mud; but loudest of all they spoke of Adventure.

The vapor pressure of manganese over liquid Mn-Sn alloys has been determined by a high-temperature torsion-effusion technique. Alloys containing from 8 to 100 at. pct Mn were investigated in the temperature range jrom 1280" to 1580" and the measured pressure values were used to calculate the partial and integral thermodynamic properties of the liquid alloys. The activities show small negative departures from ideality while the integral heats and excess entropies of mixing are asymmetric inform, changing from positive to negative with increasing manganese content. The possible contribution of various factors to the observed thermodynamic properties is discussed. COMPARATIVELY few thermodynamic data are available for manganese alloy systems.' Therefore, as part of a continuing program of studies of the thermodynamic properties of transition metal alloys, measurements have been made on various binary alloys involving this element. In recent publications,2~3 investigations of liquid Mn-Cu alloys and of the Mn-Au system in both solid and liquid states have been reported. For the first-mentioned system the work suggested that magnetic interactions may be responsible for the observed form of the thermodynamic properties, while in the second the influence of the electrochemical factor appears to be dominant. The present paper describes a similar study of liquid Mn-Sn alloys. Again the thermodynamic properties have been obtained from vapor pressure measurements made by use of a high-temperature torsion-effusion technique.4 A detailed description of the apparatus and of the experimental procedures used in alloy preparation and pressure measurement may be found elsewhere.2'4 EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS Sixteen alloys, ranging in composition from 8 to 100 at. pct Mn, were prepared from spectroscopically standardized manganese of 99.99 pct purity and tin of 99.999 pct purity, both supplied by Johnson-Matthey and Co., Ltd. One-gram samples of the alloys were obtained by carefully weighing appropriate amounts of the pure components into an effusion cell; this was then suspended in the apparatus and the metals melted together in situ by heating under vacuum to approximately 1550°K. After allowing sufficient time for a homogeneous liquid alloy to be formed, vapor pressure measurements were commenced. These were determined as rapidly as possible at a series of steady temperatures within the range of interest. The duration of experimental runs on individual samples was kept sufficiently short to ensure insignificant varia- tion of alloy composition during investigation. After completing pressure measurements, the alloys were rapidly cooled and their compositions checked by weighing or chemical analysis. All experiments were conducted using effusion cells machined entirely from boron nitride. Measurements were made using a variety of cells with orifice areas ranging from 0.0032 to 0.0075 sq cm and lengths of the order of 0.04 cm; the usual effusion correction factors for orifice geometry and molecular distribution were calculated using Freeman and Searcy's equation5 and had values between 0.6 and 0.75 for the orifices employed here. The vapor pressures of manganese over the alloys were measured at approximately 20°K intervals in the temperature range 1280" to 1580°K. In view of the close approximation of the measured pressures to Clausius-Clapeyron behavior in the experimental temperature range, the data for each alloy have been expressed by equations of the form: logp(atm) =-A/T + B A least-squares computer treatment was applied to the vapor pressure values in order to obtain the coefficients A and B with their associated error. The resulting equations are listed in Table I, together with the equation for pure solid manganese obtained from a previous study.4 To minimize the effect of possible apparatus calibration errors, the activities and partial free energies of manganese in the alloys were calculated by initial reference to the latter equation, obtained from identical torsion-effusion measurements. The immediately resulting thermodynamic quantities, based on a solid manganese reference state, were then converted to refer to the more appropriate supercooled pure liquid manganese standard; tabulated values of the free energies of solid and liquid manganese from Hultgren et al.' were used for this purpose. Partial entropies of solution of manganese were calculated from the temperature coefficients of the free energies and partial heats from the Gibbs-Helmholtz relationship.

The history, geology, ore deposits and current mining operations of the Huitzuco district have been described by C. W. Vaupelll and the current mill operations by David Segura.2 This paper completes the story of Huitzuco with a description of the reduction of the flotation concentrates. The predominant ore mineral in the Huitzuco deposit is livingstonite, a rare, mercury-antimony sulphide (HgS.2Sb2S3). Other associated minerals include cinnabar, stibnite and elemental sulphur. The gangue is largely limestone and gypsum. Former operators mined a selected grade of ore, from which the mercury was recovered by an expensive, inefficient operation. A considerable tonnage of rejects and fills, carrying mercury and antimony, was left in the mine. In order to recover both mercury and antimony from these fills and also from newly developed ore, a combination method has been developed, by means of which the livingstonite is concentrated by flotation and the flotation concentrates subsequently reduced to metallic mercury and antimony. An essential part of the flotation treatment, as developed by Segura, is the use of copper sulphate as an activating agent. A typical analysis of concentrates now being produced at the property is as follows: Hg, 7.73 per cent; Sb, 26.40; Fe, 1.20; S, 29.68; CaO, 11.50; MgO, 7.25; SiOz, 1.63; A1203, 0.65. PRocess foR Treatment op Concentrates In the development of a process for treatment of these concentrates, three different methods were investigated: (1) roasting in a Dwight-Lloyd sintering machine with an excess of air; (2) separation of mercury and antimony by distillation in a reducing atmosphere; (3) a third method, which ultimately developed into the present process. The third method involved a slow calcination at a closely regulated temperature with a limited admission of air, which separated the mercury and antimony, the raeroury passing out of the kiln with the furnace gases and the antimony remaining in the calcine or "sinter."

An idea of what is meant by "Ultrafine Minerals Or Slimes" as used in the title can be had by an examination of Fig. I. Particle size distributions are presented for a crude kaolin clay, a coarse fraction and a fine fraction. The crude kaolin as mined was blunged with water, degritted through a 325-mesh Tyler screen, and dispersed with sodium silicate. The dispersed crude was then centrifuged in the laboratory into the coarse and fine fractions shown in the figure. The distribution curves were obtained by the well known sedimentation technique of Casagrande' using a long arm centrifuge to obtain equivalent spherical diameters down to 0.2 microns on the finer fraction. Fig. 1 shows the coarse fraction kaolin to be 50% finer than 3 microns, while the crude kaolin is 50% finer than 1.4 microns, and the fine fraction 50% finer than 0.6 microns. For comparison 53 microns on the horizontal scale would represent Stokesian diameters which would just pass a 325- mesh Tyler screen, taking into consideration the Andreasen sieve correction factor of 1.22 X the screen opening.' Another helpful comparison is the surface areas, which in square meters per gram, are 0.044 for 53 micron particles, 0.77 for 3 microns, 1.65 for 1.4 microns, and 5.0 for 0.46 micron particles. A review is given of the principles on which recently proposed methods of electric log interpretation in shaly sands are based and of the evidence brought up in support of the theoretical derivations. It is. pointed out that the qualitative techniques suggested to date have a tendency to be too pessimistic in the prediction of the presence of commercial hydrocarbon accumulations. In the quantitative treatment, a new concept is introduced, namely that of strongly reduced activity of the double layer counter ions which are present near the negatively charged rock surfaces. This lemmu when applied to the calculation of the equilibrium concentratiotls of interstitial waters yields a set of very simple relations. The resulting expressions for electrochemical potentials across rock samples appear in satisfactory agreement with laboratory experiments. The formulae obtained for the electrical conductivity of shaly formatioris are of the same form as those arrived at empirirally by previous workers. Combination of the expres.riorls for potentia1s and conductivities gives a direct proof of the Tixier relation which states that for shaly water sands the product of apparent formation water resistivity and apparent formation factor equals the resistivity of the sand 100 per cent .saturated with formalion water and which was verified by the work of Wyllie and Perkins and their co-workers. The relations for the resistivities and spontaneous porer11inI.s have been extended to the case of hydrocarbon hearing shaly formations, thus laying a formal basis for the quantitative interpretation of electric logs in shaly oil sands. INTRODUCTION The presence of disseminated clays in porous rocks saturated with electrolytic solutions has a strong influence on the transference of ions taking place under electrical or chemical potential gradients. Both the electrochemical emf's in evidence on the SP curves of electric logs and the electrical conductivity measured on resistivity logs arc directly dependent on the ionic transference in the interstitial waters of the formations traversed by boreholes. A large number of researches have been carried out on the nature and magnitude of the effects of clays on ionic transference. The most recent of these have been described in papers by McCardell and Winsauer,1 2 Wyllie and Southwick,3 poupon, Loy, and Tixier,4 and by Perkins et al.5 Most of these authors consider the effects of the clays as due to the fixed negative charges on the clay lattice. These charges cause the formation of diffuse surface layers with a high concentration of positive ions. The internal solution of the shaly reservoir rock has therefore a different ionic composition and concentration than the electrolyte with which it is in equilibrium (connate water produced from the formation or mud filtrate by which the formation is invaded). To calculate the equilibrium concentration of the internal solution, use is made of the Donnan6 relation, which states that the mean ionic activities of the internal solution and of the external electrolyte must be equal. In recent years there has been interest displayed in the precipitation phenomena occurring in austenitic alloys based on the binary Fe-Ni system.1'2 Previous communications have been extended covering the kinetics of clustering in the Fe-Ni-Ti system and the effect of cluster size on subsequent mechanical properties.3'4 To a great extent the question of coherency, which has a dominant role in determining the mechanical properties, is dictated by the degree of misfit between the precipitate and matrix. Thus, the change in lattice parameter of the matrix with composition is an important variable that should be examined. The lattice parameter, ao, of austenite was determined for Fe-29.75 Ni-1 to 6 Ti and Fe-27 Ni-1 to 10 Ti alloys in this study. The alloys used in this investigation were melted in a vacuum induction furnace from a starting stock of plast iron (99.95), electrolytic nickel (99.9), and ti- tanium sheet (99.5) in a MgO crucible. The alloy compositions in atomic percent are given in Table I and their relative position in the Fe-Ni-Ti ternary is indicated in Fig. 1. The chemical analyses were taken from the homogenized bulk materials treated in a manner related earlier.3 A diamond file was used to obtain powder from the bulk. The present work has two objectives: first to develop an experimental method which would give some new information on the micromechanism of the reduction of oxides by gases at elevated temperature; second to clari,fy the intermediate phases of the W-0 system, formed during the reduction. A Galvanic cell with the solid electrolyte , ZrO2 . CaO, was imbedded in powders of W03, CuO, or Fe20s with two measuring electvodes and with a reference electrode. The change of the intraparticle gas composition was measured at An oxygen concentration cell consists of two electrodes separated by an electrolyte through which the transference of electrical charge is accomplished predominantly by the migration of oxygen ions. Many works have been reported on the oxygen con- 600" to loo@ C during the reduction by the gas mixture of hydrogen and argon. The intraparticle gas composition changes stepwise with time. The electromotive force of such temporary interruption corresponds to the equilibrium electromotive force of two solid phases formed during the reduction. Ultrasonic attenuation, a, measurements in the frequency range of 5 to 55 mc per sec have been studied to determine their quantitative relationship with the following three variables of mixed microstructures in steels: 1) the volume percent, XF, of polygonal fer-rite in mixed structures of martensite and polygonal ferrite in Fe-Mo-B alloys: 2) volume percent, XA, of retained austenite plus martensite aggregates in high-carbon steel; and 3) substructural differences between 100 pct bainitic ferrite structures formed at various temperatures. The quantitative relationship obtained in the first two conditions by plotting a us the known structural parameters can be expressed, respectively, as: where al, a 2 and C1, Cz are constants. In the third condition the nature of the attenuation depends on the state of dislocations generated at the transformation temperatures and also on the alloy composition. From these measured results, the mechanism of ultrasonic attenuation caused by these mixed microstructures can also be studied. MUCH interest has recently been shown in the application of ultrasonic attenuation and wave velocity measurements to the study of the microstructural characteristics of steels. The general aims of most of the investigations in this field can be grouped into two categories: one is to study the mechanisms of ultrasonic losses caused by the characteristic phases in the microstructure of steel,''' and the other is to develop nondestructive test methods and applications for quality control.~' 4 Apparently no work has been done on the evaluation of ultrasonic attenuation meas -urements as a means of quantitative determination of a given phase in the microstructure of a steel. It is well-established that the decomposition of austenite results in four main microstructural constituents—polygonal ferrite, pearlite, bainite, and martensite—and that each phase has different mechanical properties. Thus, when a steel consists of mixed microstructures, the mechanical properties can often be related to a quantitative measure of the volume percent of each phase present. This study relates ultrasonic attenuation measurements to: 1) the volume percent of polygonal ferrite in mixtures of martensite and polygonal ferrite in Fe-Mo-B alloys; 2) the substructural differences between 100 pct bainitic ferrite structures formed at various temperatures; and 3) the vol- ume percent of austenite in austenite plus martensite aggregates in a high-carbon steel. The choice of the specimen materials was based on the laboratory stocks which were suitable to produce the required mixed microstructures for this study. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Materials and Heat Treatment. Polygonal Ferrite Plus Martensite Structures. This mixture of phases was produced in a vacuum-melted Fe-Mo-B alloy. The alloy was hammer-forged at 1900" ~ to a -f-in.-sq bar. By isothermally heat treating the alloy at 1300° F for various times and then water quenching, variations in the amount of polygonal (or proeutectoid) ferrite can be controlled in a microstructure in which the balance of the material is martensite. In the present work, four different times of isothermal transformation were adopted; after heat treatment, the four specimens were machined for ultrasonic measurements. The compositions, heat treatments, and dimensions of the four specimens are listed in Table I. 100 pct Bainite Structures Formed at Different Temperatures. It has been well-established by Irvine et al.= that the presence of molybdenum and boron in ferrous alloys can retard the formation of polygonal proeutectoid ferrite and expose the bainitic transformation bay, so that a more acicular or bainitic ferrite can be obtained over a wide range of cooling rates. Their investigation6 also showed that the mechanical properties of fully bainitic steels are usually closely dependent on the substructural characteristics of the steels. For studying the substructural characteristics in completely bainitic structures, six Fe-Ni-Mo alloys, of which five were free from carbon addition and one with 0.055 pct C addition, were selected so that a wide range of hardness values for 100 pct bainitic ferrite structures could be produced by normalizing at 1900" F followed by air cooling. The different bainitic transformation temperatures were recorded during air cooling. All of the alloys were vacuum-melted and then forged at 1900" F to square bars. Data on the six specimens of these structure series are summarized in Table 11. Austenite Plus Martensite Structures. The high-carbon steel used to study austenite plus martensite structures was vacuum-melted and then forged into Q-in.-sq bar. The series of mixed structures of austenite plus martensite was produced by quenching the specimens from the austenitizing temperature to room temperature and then refrigerating them at various temperatures within the range of martensite transformation to produce different amounts of retained austenite. Data on the four specimens of this series are listed in Table 111. Quantitative Analysis of the Microstructures. The microstructures containing martensite plus polygonal ferrite were analyzed by the point-counting technique.

H. H. Kellogg (Columbia University)—The accurate measurements of the equilibrium gas ratios for the reaction: Pb(1) + H2S = PbS(c) + H2 [I] reported in this paper are a distinct contribution to the literature, and the authors are to be congratulated. I wish to comment, however, on the correlation of the data which is presented. The authors show a straight line correlation of log H2S/H2 vs 1/T, Fig. 1, and are satisfied with this for calculation of ?Fo even when extrapolated to low temperature (427 °C). Heat capacity data for the constituents of this reaction are available (at least to 900°K), however, and ACP for reaction [I] is finite and positive in the temperature range studied. Simplification of the heat capacity equations yields: ?CP= 2.71 + 1.65 x 10-3T (298°-900°K) This positive value of ?CP should result in a small but noticeable curvature of a plot of log K vs 1/T. That the experimental data fail to show such a curvature may be traced to another oversimplification of the author's treatment of their data. Production of a coal preparation plant is governed by many restrictions, such as the tonnage of different products and blends that can be sold within a given period, capacities and output proportions of the cleaning and sizing units, blending proportions, quality specifications, and costs and prices for the various products. Determination of the tonnage of each product and blend that should be made in order to obtain the maximum profit can be difficult unless a systematic method such as linear programming is used. In this paper the basic method of linear programming is described briefly. The Old Ben No. 9 preparation plant is used as an example to illustrate in detail how eqwations can be written to form a linear programming model of a coal preparation plant. Three sample problems, each requiring 56 or more equations and 63 structural variables, were solved with an IBM 650 computer. Linear programming is one of several mathematical tools used for operations research. It has been applied to many fields and has been used by a number of industries either to maximize the profits of certain operations or to minimize costs. P. B. Nalle and L. W. weeks' have described the use of the method by the Riverside Cement Co. to minimize the cost of blending raw materials to make portland cement. Their problem is to obtain at minimum cost a mix with certain specifications from a number of possible materials which have various costs and various amounts of CaO, SiO2, Fe2O3, and other constituents. In a paper on the use of linear programming by the National Coal Board in England, K. B. Williams and K. B. Halley2 describe how the transportation method, a variation of linear programming, is used to minimize the cost of sending 37 grades of coal from 28 mines to seven central washing plants which produce coal for furnace coke and foundry coke. The various coals have different percentages of volatile matter, moisture, sulfur, ash, and phosphorous, so there is considerable choice in how they can be blended to meet the specifications of the two products. The purpose of this paper is to show how linear programming can be used to maximize the profits of a coal washing plant which produces individual final products as well as blends. The Old Ben Corp. furnished assumed sample data from their Old Ben Mine No. 9 preparation plant for this investigation. However, the data that have been used are entirely the author's responsibility. METHOD OF LINEAR PROGRAMMING Numerous articles and books have been written on the theory and applications of linear programming.3-5 However, since the method has not been widely applied by the mining industry, a brief, nontheo-retical discussion of its basic method seems to be in order. Linear programming (Table I) is used to determine the best possible solution to a number of interdependent activities. It is essentially a method for making systematic selections from a number of possible solutions to determine positively the optimum solution. There may be other equally good solutions but no better ones. Each activity must have linear coefficients and there must be a criterion to judge how good the solution actually is. The concept of local equilibrium is examined and, in particular, the applicability of the concept to two-phase binary diffusion couples is discussed. It is concluded that, if binary solid solutions are treated thermodynamically as ternary solutions, vacancies being the third component, then recent experimental observations of nonequilibrium interface compositions (i.e., compositions different from the phase diagram values) are consistent with a state of complete dynamic equilibrium at the interface. CLASSICAL approaches to diffusion and to other irreversible processes often utilize a postulate of "local equilibrium". That is, one assumes even in the presence of gradients, fluxes, and time changes of properties, a) that the Second Law can be formulated locally, and b) that thermodynamic equations of state among intensive properties are identical with those for equilibrium phases. A direct consequence of this assumption, for example, is that one would calculate the total entropy of a nonequilibrium phase simply by integrating the entropy density (eu per unit volume) over the volume of the phase, assuming that entropy density is the same function of energy and particle density as for equilibrium phases. In the study of diffusion and of diffusion-controlled phase transformations, metallurgists take this concept of local equilibrium for granted and utilize it automatically. In fact, experimental evidence of all kinds is overwhelming that "local equilibrium" is a valid limiting law, approached more and more closely as gradients and rates of change approach zero. On the other hand, we have neither experimental nor statistical thermodynamic proof that this principle of "local equilibrium" should remain rigorously valid at high gradients and for rapid processes. Theoretically, in fact, one would expect deviations because interactions between adjacent volume increments of material affect the evaluation of entropy. Also one observes experimentally structural and small energetic differences between equilibrium and nonequilibrium phases. The purpose of this paper is to present a thermodynamic framework for the study and correlation of deviations from strict local equilibrium in isothermal diffusion and related processes. This procedure, in effect, preserves the principle of local equilibrium by thermodynamically assigning the deviations from static equilibrium properties to a defect component. Although this theory is entirely phenomenological, the possibility does exist of correlating the theory with experimental observations of defects under favorable circumstances. The most immediate application appears to be to the equilibria at the interfaces in two-phase binary diffusion couples. A recent pertinent work by Eifert et al.1 has shown that the concentrations of aluminum in the a(fcc) and B(bcc) phases at the 0-8 interface in Cu:Cu-12.5 wt pct A1 diffusion couples are greater than those given by the phase diagram. It is postulated by these authors that the supersaturation of the o phase at the interface provides the driving force for the a-to-B lattice transformation; the excess free energy of the a phase, ?Gaxs, arising from the greater-than-equilibrium aluminum concentration is about 3 cal per g-atom. On the basis of the schematic free energy-composition diagram shown in Fig. 1, Eifert et al. concluded that the thermodynamic situation at the interface is one of the partial equilibrium; that is, = for the more mobile aluminum whereas will be reexamined in the latter part of this paper. THERMODYNAMIC PROPERTIES OF DEFECTS A rigorous analysis of the thermodynamics of defects requires an added degree of freedom in the Phase Rule sense, because the standard formulations of solution thermodynamics (partial molal properties of components, free energy minimization, equality of chemical potentials, and so forth) involve the implicit
