Discussion of the paper of B. H. Dunshee, presented at the Butte meeting, August, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 30, August, 1913, pp. 1511 to 1531. GEORGE E. MOULTHROP, Butte, Mont.:-The recording for the first time by Mr. Dunshee, in a readily usable form, of the various systems of square-set framing applied in the Butte district is a valuable contribution to mining information. The many different methods of framing employed, due to the individual ideas of superintendents and foremen of segregated companies, have given full opportunity to determine the best framing for the conditions as found in these mines, and the final adoption of a system uniform for all the mines has come about through a study of these various methods and an experience covering a period of many years. The sawed 10 by 10 in. and 12 by 12 in. timbers undoubtedly give the best satisfaction; and the style of framing the sawed timber that under all conditions has given the best practical results is that used in the Anaconda group and other mines, described and recommended by Mr. Dunshee. In this framing the posts have a horn 2 in. high and 6 in. square, the cap end having dimensions of 3 by 6 in. Instead of the framed girt shown in the drawings of the Anaconda group, the 6 by 10 in. girt adopted at some other mines, which fits into the cap and post framing with no other preparation than cutting the timber to the necessary length, fills all the necessary requirements for strength and affects a material saving in timber and labor. This, as Mr. Dunshee states, is without doubt the type of framing which would be adopted as a standard for 10 by 10 in. sawed timbers if sawed timber sets were to be used in the future generally. But saw-timber for the mines was becoming scarce and expensive, and round timber for the square sets furnished an alternative which provided, at greatly reduced cost, material which in every way supplied the requirements of the mining conditions. The use of the round timber with a satisfactory framing makes available a conveniently located and large source of supply which up to this time has served no useful industrial purpose. Particularly is this true of small timber, which is still standing in great quantities in the forests where the trees more desirable for commercial purposes have already been cut and marketed.

This investigation was undertaken for the purpose of determining, in a systematic way, the effect of the rate of cooling of steels, heated to above the transformation range, on their various mechanical properties. This paper gives the results obtained in the investigation of the heat treatment of carbon steels carried out under the auspices of the Committee on The Heat Treatment of Carbon Steels of the Engineering Division, National Research Council. The objects of this committee, of which Dr. Henry M. Howe was chairman, were to increase knowledge of the influence of heat treatment on the mechanical properties of carbon steel. The mcthod pursued was to subject specimens of steel of the carbon contents most used for engineering work, 0.34 per cent., 0.52 per cent., and 0.75 per cent., to various heat treatments, and to test the mechanical properties thus induced. The steels were the same as were used by the committee on fatigue phenomena. This project was financed jointly by the U. S. Bureaus of Mines and Standards; industries and university laboratories have cooperated. A large part of the work was done at Doctor Howe's private laboratory. The committee consisted of F. B. INTRODUCTION Data available on prophyry copper occurrences in the Andean, Caribbean, Appalachian, and Cordilleran orogens may be categorized in a manner to suggest a hypothetical evolution for deposits that occur in the western hemisphere. A classification of de- posits is also suggested. A classification dependent on internal structure of a porphyry copper deposit would lead to two broad categories, breccia pipe and stockwork models. A classification of this type is examined herein but it is not universally accepted in the literature. Modeling based on igneous petrography as well as metasomatism attendant with the sulfide mineralization is more widely accepted by economic geologists whose evaluation of porphyry systems is influenced by the presence or absence of a phyllic zone. Lowell and Guilbert model deposits ordinarily include a phyllic zone, whereas those of the diorite model do not. Position of the phyllic zone in the alteration sequence is a significant ore guide. Should the phyllic zone be absent, dependence on alteration zoning to identify metallization is weakened. Presence or absence of the phyllic zone therefore is a significant parameter in the economic evaluation of a porphyry copper deposit (Hollister. et al., 1975). The Lowell and Guilbert (1970) model commonly includes a phyllic zone in quartz- bearing rocks. Parameters of both calc-alkalic and the quartz monzonite models mentioned elsewhere in this volume are sufficiently close to the Lowell and Guilbert (1970) model that it should be expanded to encompass them. The diorite model remains separate and distinct because deposits of this type are characterized by an absence of quartz in the pluton, commonly highly gold: copper ratios, low molybdenum content, and regular absence of sericite in the alteration zones. The rediffraction of Bragg diffracted beams by differently oriented regions (such as twins) of a crystal may give rise to "extra" reflections or reciprocal lattice points. These two papers are concerned with predicting these additional reflections which result from twin related regions of a lattice. Analysis is made for {111}fcc twins, (112)bcc twins, and {hkil}hcp twins. It is first required, knowing the specific variant of the twinning plane in each case, to predict the positions of the twin reflections relative to the matrix reciprocal lattice. Once this is done, the positions of the "extra" multiply diffracted reflections may be deduced. Part I is devoted to establishing "selection ru1es" for twinning, i.e., the necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of twinned reciprocal lattice points. 1. INTRODUCTION. Transmission electron diffraction patterns are frequently complicated by multiply diffracted beams. Pashley and stowell1 have recently demonstrated that certain extra reflections in evapo- rated films of gold result from the rediffraction of matrix Bragg diffracted beams by (111) microtwins in the gold. It was previously (and erroneously) suggested 2,3 that observed "irrational" reflections in fine-grained gold were due to the presence of some hcp gold. A similar situation exists, apparently, for some bcc materials; fine (112) twins in bcc martensite in Fe-Ni alloys4 give rise to extra reflections. There are many other examples. The number of transmission electron microscopic investigations is continually increasing, and because of the importance of double (and multiple) diffraction in the interpretation of diffraction patterns, it was judged that a detailed elaboration of the principles involved is desirable, as well as the extension of these principles in reasonably closed form to other crystal structures, particularly bcc and hcp. The present analysis considers double diffraction caused by (111) twins in fcc metals, (112) twins in bcc metals, and {hkil} = {hkl) twins in hcp metals. For each case of twinning, the various possible (variants of) twins give rise to a set of interpenetrating reciprocal lattices. The relative spatial arrangements of these reciprocal lattices can be deduced (Part I) and are expressed in terms of simple "selection rules". The resulting sets of interpenetrating reciprocal lattices are then analyzed for possible doubly diffracted reflections (Part II). The notation used, and some important formulas are given in Appendices I and 11.

THE present Hecla Co. is a Washington corporation; the Hecla Co. of Idaho was the old company. The older corporation owned two claims, the Hecla and the Katie May, and was incorporated for 500,000 shares of one dollar par value. The principal shareholders and officials of the older company were among the early mining men of the camp. Among the active officials were John A. Finch and A. B. Campbell. Among the directors and share- holders were Patrick Clark, J. R. Smith, Frank Upman, F. J, Kipp, Chas. Kipp, B. A. Kipp and Carl Landsee. F. J. Kipp and Carl Landsee are now directors of the Company. All of the others mentioned have died, but the surviving members of their families retain their ownership in the Company's shareholders. B. A. ,Kipp, who recently died, was the largest shareholder at the time of incorporation and Patrick Clark was the second largest shareholder. B. A. Kipp is a brother 'of F. J. Kipp, director of the Company.

The chromalographic effect refers to the separation of constituents in a moving fluid phase which occurs when the phase is passed over a stationary phase, either solid or liquid, or large areal extent. In performing chemical analyses, the large surface contact areal is provided in the case of gas-solid chromatography by-passing the gas over a porous solid and for gas-liquid chronla tog rap hy by-passing the gas over a porous solid which has been coated with a nonvolatile liquid. The porous medium is usually placed in a cylindrical tube, although it may be a relatively flat sheet as in paper chroma-tography. According to one theory,' the separation results from the difference in time spent by various components in the stationary phahe. A gaseous component which is conlpletely insoluble in the stationary phase, or is not adsorbed on the solid, proceeds unimpeded through the column. The versatility and power of the various types of chromatogruphy for the analysis of complex mixtures are evident from their widespread use in performing chemical analyses and from the large number of symposia, books, and papers devoted to the subject in recent years. Associated developments are the application of chromatography to the determination of heats of solution, heats of adsorption, solubilities orK-values, etc. Gas-liquicl chromatography analyses may be characterized by the manner in which the samples are introduced and displaced from the column'. The three techniques used are known as (1) frontal analysis, (3) displacement analysis, and (3) elution analysis. The frontal analysis is performed by displacing an inert gas from the column by a continuous stream of the sample. As indicated in Fig. l(A), all but the first fraction leaving the column represent mixtures rather than pure components. The displacement analysis is conducted by filling the column with a sample, then displacing it with a more strongly adsorbed or absorbed vapor. The resulting chro-matogram is illustrated by Fig. 1(B). Finally, in the elution analysis a small sample of the mixture to be analyzed is introduced as a "plug" into a Rowing stream of carrier gas to give an elution-type chromato-gram. Fig. l(C). The three techniques may be used to provide models to which Row patterns in other physical situations may be compared. PURPOSE OF THE INVESTIGATION The purpose of this investigation was to determine whether natural reservoir rocks, when coated with crude oil, provided sufficient surface areas to give rise to a chromato-graphic separation of light hydrocarbon constituents. The tests were conducted with the light hydrocar-bons in the gaseous state. SANDS TESTED Two sands of widely different permeabilities have been studied: (1) Ventura core (16 md), and (2) Torpedo sandstone core (578 md).Table 1 gives a description of the cores that were tested. With the exception of one frontal-type flow arrangement which was performed on Core 3, the tests were of theelution-type in which a methane-propane mixture was eluted through the core by means of helium. The Ventura core, when impregnated with a weathered crude from the same field, became so impermeable to gas flow that it was necessary to conduct the tests on the granulated cores (Cores 2 and 3).

In a zirconium {1121} twins tend to have coherelzt boundaries and thus do not usually taper to a point when they intersect a grain boundary. Under the proper conditions, a (1121) twin may deform a boundary in such a manner as to clearly rcveal the twinning shear. Measurements of these grain-bounrlary rotatzons yield a value of 0.63 for the (1151) twinning shear. The magnitude of the observed shear and its shear sense are in excellent agreement with the assumption that the second undis-torted plme (K2) for this form of twinning is the basal plane (0002). The present value of the tzvinninz shear, which is approximately three limes larger than Rapperport&apos;s value? is in excellent agreement with reported results of Sokuskii and Prolsenko.5 RECENTLY westlake&apos; reported a study of the twinning modes of zirconium based on ~ap~er~ort&apos;s2 values for the twinning elements. He observed that two of the modes, (1012) and {1122), can be explained by relatively simple dislocation models. A workable model for (1121) twinning, however, proved to be very complex and questionable. Because Rapperport&apos;s second undistorted plane, (K2), for (1121) twinning has large indices, {ll2l6), it is possible that the difficulty in defining a model for (1121) twinning lies in an incorrect value for K2. A measurement of this twinning element has therefore been made, using a method based on observations of the shear displacement of grain boundaries at positions where they are intersected by (1121) twins. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The zirconium specimens were deformed in tension on an Instron machine either at the temperature of liquid nitrogen (77ºK), or prestrained at liquid nitrogen temperature and then further deformed at room temperature. Straining at 77°K was employed in order to nucleate (1 121) twins in large numbers, since simple ropm-temperature tensile deformation favors (1012) twinning. Specimens were machined from 1/2-in.-thick plate. The material was arc-melted sponge zirconium annealed to an ASTM grain size 4 and containing, in parts per million, 380 Fe, 880 0, <40 Hf, 32 N, and < 5 H. The specimen gage length and diameter were 1.25 and 0.130 in., respectively. To insure a gage section initially free of twins, the last 60 thousandths of the specimen diameter was removed by acid machining.

The recent emphasis placed upon the use of molybdenum as a geochemical indicator has stimulated considerable inquiry into the behavior of molybdenum in the zone of oxidation. This paper represents a summary of recent and continuing experimental work and calculations in an investigation of a portion of the system Mo-Fe-S-H20 and treats the stability of various iron and molybdenum compounds with respect to oxidation potential and pH. Using experimentally determined free energy values for ferrimolybdite, diagrams of the stability fields of this mineral have been calculated with respect to ilsemannite (?), molybdenite, pyrite and limonite. This theoretical approach is the one utilized by Garrels3&apos;4 in studies of the relationships of various minerals in the zone of oxidation. Use of this approach is particularly suited to the study of geochemistry in the zone of supergene processes because of the low temperatures, low pressures and other relatively easily determined and duplicated factors that exist in the near surface environment. Such a study of molybdenum, however, is complicated by several factors. One of these is the fact that the strong amphoteric behavior of molybdenum makes possible a wide variety of substances and complexes whose exact chemical natures are unknown. The second factor is the dearth of thermodynamic data for many of the simplest of the possible compounds and ions important to the study. For the purpose of this study, the problem of complexes has been approached through considering only the simpler possibilities realizing that the complexes and systems so treated may be gross oversimplifications. All the complexes considered, however, have been suggested in the chemical 2,7,9,12 or geologi-cal literature. EXPERIMENTAL WORK Studies of the behavior of molybdenum ions and ferrimolybdite have been carried out in aqueous sys- tems, and reactions have been followed by simultaneous measurement and recording of pH and oxidation potential. A major problem involved in this study was the long periods of time necessary for equilibrium to be established in some of the systems considered; in a few instances, these periods exceeded four weeks, that is, four weeks during which measured conditions changed continuously. Another problem, in some instances, was the indeterminate nature of the reactions that have taken place. Because of the tendency of molybdenum to complex, reactions which take place under some of the more extreme imposed conditions of oxidation and acidity or alkalinity are unknown. However, useful data for the present work were obtained from studies of the molybdate ion and ferrimolybdite between pH 2 and 8 and under only moderately oxidizing to nonoxidizing conditions. Instruments used in the experiments were a Hewlitt-Packard Model 412A VTVM, a modified Beckman Zeromatic pH Meter and two Varian model 11 recorders. pH was measured between glass and calomel electrodes and Eh was measured between calomel and platinum electrodes. Conditions of pH were varied with 1N H2SO4 and 1N NH4OH and 1N NaOH. Eh was varied with gaseous nitrogen, oxygen or aqueous H202. Ambient temperature was essentially uniform at 24ºC and was increased in the reaction vessel by the positioning of a magnetic stirrer whose temperature was sufficient to bring the temperature to 2S°C in the reaction. The temperatures of reaction did not vary more than 1/2ºfrom 25°C. Two reactions were investigated, the ferrimolybdite-limonite-water reaction and the reduction of molybdate ion. Studies of both reactions yielded useful data that were used in preparation of the Eh-pH diagrams. The traces of the reactions are shown on Fig. 1. Ferrimolybdite-Limonite- Water: Studies of this reaction involved analysis of the solution of ferrimolybdite and simultaneous formation of ferric hydroxide. The data are summarized on Fig. 1. In this reaction, equilibrium was attained at various pH&apos;s when coexistence of the two solid phases (ferrimolybdite and ferric hydroxide) was attained. At the proper pH, controlled by the amount of ferrimolybdite and thus the dissolved content of molybdate species, both phases were observed and reaction times to complete the transition were on the order of weeks. In the summer of 1909 the Boston & Montana reduction department of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. completed a new flue system, at a cost of about $1,100,000, and as this includes the largest and highest chimney in the world, and some new features of flue construction, a description will be of interest. At the Spokane meeting of the Institute in September, 1909, a brief mention was made of this flue system, in discussing Mr. Brunton&apos;s presidential paper on the Progress of Metallurgy in the West, and a promise was given that when a long enough time had elapsed, so that operating results could be given, a paper would be offered. The smelting plant includes blast furnaces, MacDougall roasters, gas-fired reverberatories, and converters.

IN MOST diamond core drilling the primary objective is the recovery of samples to be used for chemical analysis, physical tests, or visual inspection. Unless these samples are reliable and the information systematically recorded, the time and money spent in securing them are largely wasted. A properly taken diamond-drill sample is similar to a properly moiled channel sample but more accurate. No channel sample can be moiled in as even a groove as the smooth cylinder of material normally removed in diamond drilling. More important still, sampling by the diamond drill practically eliminates that personal equation which Jora1emon4 reference numbers apply to publications listed in the bibliography at the end of this article) has aptly termed "the almost magnetic attraction of the most conscientious hand toward rich pieces of ore."

The vaporization characteristics of carbon dioxide in a League City natural gas - Billings crude oil system were studied at three temperatures, 38°. 120°, and 202°F and for pressures ranging from 600 to 8,500 psi. Variation of carbon dioxide concentration up to 12 mole per cent in the composite showed no effect on the equilibrium vaporization ratios (K values) of the hydrocarbon constituents or on the K value of carbon dioxide itself. It was shown that carbon dioxide is more soluble in crudes than in distillates which is contrary to the behavior of methane. A working chart of carbon dioxide K values is presented. INTRODUCTION The study of the equilibrium vaporization ratios of mixtures of paraffin hydrocarbons has been rather thorough.2,6,7,8,9 In the past few years considerable attention has been paid to the vaporization characteristics of the so-called noncondensable gases such as nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen sulfide in mixtures of hydrocarbons. since they usually occur to some extent in most crude oils and natural gases.1,3,4,5 Knowledge of this behavior is useful to both the production and refining phases of the petroleum industry. This paper reports the equilibrium vaporization ratios (K&apos;s) of carbon dioxide in a mixture of League City natural gas and Billings crude oil, and compares them to those obtained in a natural gas-distillate system. The equilibrium vaporization ratios for the hydrocarbon components in this system had previously been studied by Roland.&apos; In addition to the determination of the K values for carbon dioxide, the K values for methane and ethane were also determined in order to observe what effect, if any, the presence of carbon dioxide had on these K values. The concentration of carbon dioxide was also varied in order to observe the effect of this variable on the carbon dioxide K values. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The apparatus used in this study cotlsisted of a stainless steel equilibrium cell of about 2 liters capacity. The cell was mounted on trunions permitting rocking in a thermostatically controlled oil bath. Two high pressure valves fitted with steel tubing were mounted on the top of the cell. one was used for sampling the equilibrium gas phase and the other for sampling the equilibrium liquid phase by means of an induction tube within the cell. Stainless steel tubing from the bottom of the cell led to a mercury reservoir and manifold which was connected to a free-piston type pressure gauge manufac- lured by the American Instrunlent Ctr. and to a volumetric. putrip. The temperature of the oil bath was measured by means of a ralibrated mercury-in-glass thermometer. The recorded temperatures are believed to be accurate to ±0.5 °F. The pressures are correct to 22 psi. The crude oil used in this study was stock tank oil obtained from the Wilcox formation in the Billings Field, Noble County. Okla. The natural gas was obtained from the League City Field. Galveston County, Tex. The oil was treated with anhydrous calcium sulfate in order to remove the last traces of water. To insure a supply of constant composition gas at room temperature the cylinders of League City gas were cooled to about 30°F, inverted, and the condensed liquid was allowed to drain from the cylinders. The analysis of the gas and crude are tabulated in Table I. The carbon dioxide came from Pure Carbonic, Inc., and was .stated to have a purity of 99.5 per cent or better. The procedure used to obtain samples of the equilibrium liquid and vapor was similar to that employed by others making use of the rocking type equilibrium cell.6,7,8 The equilibrium cell was evacuated and calculated quantities of carbon dioxide, natural gas, and crude oil were charged to the cell to the desired pressure. In charging the equilibrium cell an attempt was made to maintain the ratio of the natural gas to crude oil as close as possible to that employed by Roland. After the cell was charged, samples of

Stainless steel tubing from the bottom of the cell led to a mercury reservoir and manifold which was connected to a free-piston type pressure gauge manufac- lured by the American Instrunlent Ctr. and to a volumetric. putrip. The temperature of the oil bath was measured by means of a ralibrated mercury-in-glass thermometer. The recorded temperatures are believed to be accurate to ±0.5 °F. The pressures are correct to 22 psi. The crude oil used in this study was stock tank oil obtained from the Wilcox formation in the Billings Field, Noble County. Okla. The natural gas was obtained from the League City Field. Galveston County, Tex. The oil was treated with anhydrous calcium sulfate in order to remove the last traces of water. To insure a supply of constant composition gas at room temperature the cylinders of League City gas were cooled to about 30°F, inverted, and the condensed liquid was allowed to drain from the cylinders. The analysis of the gas and crude are tabulated in Table I. The carbon dioxide came from Pure Carbonic, Inc., and was .stated to have a purity of 99.5 per cent or better. The procedure used to obtain samples of the equilibrium liquid and vapor was similar to that employed by others making use of the rocking type equilibrium cell.6,7,8 The equilibrium cell was evacuated and calculated quantities of carbon dioxide, natural gas, and crude oil were charged to the cell to the desired pressure. New Mexico retained its position in 1938 as the sixth largest oil-producing state, with a total production of 35,510,176 bbl. This was 2,875,598 bbl. less than the 1937 production of 38,485,774 bbl., or a decrease of 0.077 per cent, which was caused by the lack of pipe-line facilities and storage at the pipe-line terminals. The production for Lea County (excluding Maljamar) was 32,926,788 bbl.; for Eddy County (including Maljamar) was 2,225,411 bbl.; and for northwestern New Mexico (San Juan and McKinley Counties), 357,977 bbl. The average daily nonmarginal well allowable for Lea County on Jan. 1, 1938, was 65 bbl. At the close of the year it was 49 bbl. The average daily pipe-line runs for domestic consumption were less than the state allowables recommended by the United States Bureau of Mines. There was a demand for Artesia crude for foreign export, which if included in the daily production for New Mexico would be slightly in excess of the daily production recommended for New Mexico by the Bureau of Mines. The daily average production for the year was 97,329 barrels. There were 622 completions in the state, of which 520 were oil wells; 16 hydrocarbon gas wells; 5 carbon dioxide gas wells, and 81 dry holes. Of the dry holes 38 were in or near-by proven fields and the remainder, 43, were wildcats. Five new fields were discovered in New Mexico during 1938, three in Lea County and two in Eddy County. Southeastern New Mexico Lea County.—The Monumcnt field was the largest producing field in Lea County, with 9,440,334 bbl., and was closely followed by the Eunice field with 8,872,335 bbl. The Hobbs field was third with 5,010,414 bbl. The greatest activity in Lea County was in the Vacuum pool, with 129 completions, of which 126 were oil wells and three were dry holes. The Texas Company completed its Corbin NO. 1 in the KW 1/4 SW1/4 sec. 10, T. 18 S., R. 33 E. in August. This well was drilled to a depth of 5118 ft. in a white sand, encountering salt water. It was plugged back to 4315 ft, and pumped 43 bbl. of 36" gravity oil in 12 hr. It was approximately 6 miles southwest of the closest production in the Vacuum

SASS and cohenl (S-C) have recently reported some transmission electron microscope observations of an interesting effect which they call "veining". They observed veining in thin foils of solution-treated and (in certain cases) aged samples of a Ni-10.3 at. pct Ti-0.6 at. pct A1 alloy (assumed equal to 10.9 at. pct Ti). S-C suggest that veining in solution-treated samples is due to the selective electrolytic etching of titanium-rich regions in alloys which are otherwise homogeneous. They associate the veins with the discrete titanium-rich regions detected in a magnetic study of aging in this system by Ben Israel and Fine,&apos; and they also suggest that the initial strengthening of aged Ni-Ti alloys is due to these titanium-rich regions, rather than the formation of the coherent precipitate (Ni3Ti, L12 crystal structure).

(San Francisco fleeting, October, 1911.) DURING the past two years California has developed a new and important oil-field : I refer to Midway. This field produced the famous Lake View gusher, which is credited with a total production in excess of 8,000,000 barrels. Fortunately for the oil industry of the State, this well is now a thing of the past, and nothing save a great crater-like opening marks its location. The pipe is entirely worn away and gone ; and it is a matter of serious doubt if there can be anything done that will cause the well to produce again. Fortunately, also, there have been no, other wells in that field or elsewhere throughout the State that in any way compared with the Lake View. Midway is noted for large wells, of from 500 to 2,000 barrels production; but the decline is rapid, and a few months serve to bring the output down to a few hundred barrels. In the oil-territory heretofore blocked out as proved and probable, there have been, during the year, many changes. Some areas which were expected to be fairly productive have apparently failed; others, more strictly "wild-cat," have come in; while in some of the older fields there are properties which are beginning to show evident signs of exhaustion. The total area of proved territory will therefore probably suffer but small increase, when balances are struck off. The increase of new area has come from extensions of the Midway field, the development of a field in Lost Hills and Belridge, and extensions of the Fullerton-Whittier field in southern California. In these later developments, down to date, the fresh area absolutely proved is not much in excess of 3,000 acres. Recent developments in Coalinga indicate the possible extension of that field to the south, but at great depth. Coalinga is still the most northerly field of any consequence in the State. (communication to the Secretary†):—The very interesting results obtained by Prof. Hofman and his assistants came to my attention when I had temporarily assumed charge of the metallurgical department of the Missouri School of Mines, and had found it, pending the completion of a new building, lacking a furnace in which to roast ore preparatory to the customary lead blast-furnace run. An attempt at lime-roasting had been already determined upon, but the use of a charge which would make a slag of definite composition was a new idea. The results following were obtained by Messrs. Aubrey Fellows, J. C. Long, E. R. Wash, and Dr. T. C. Tseung, under my supervision. In August 1954 a low altitude test geophysical survey was made in the Green Pond area of Morris County, New Jersey, with a Gulf Research and Development Co. Model I1 total magnetic field variation magnetometer mounted in a Sikorsky S-55 helicopter. The test was made in this area to compare the results of a high precision, very low altitude magnetometer survey with an existing ground magnetic survey in this area having known magnetite concentrations, so that the method could be used in areas of difficult access for the detailing of airborne magnetometer anomalies of interest in place of ground surveys. The load capacity of the Sikorsky S-55 permitted installation of a recording scintillation counter so that a radioactivity survey would be made simultaneously with the magnetometer survey.

Equations are derived from statistical considerations to represent the activities of each component of an interstitial solution, and of a compound with a wide homogeneity range as a function of composition and temperature, based on the interaction energies between the various components, Eij. The equations are checked on the binary systems Fe-C, Ta-H, and Y-H, the ternary systems Ti-O-H, liquid Fe-C-0, and the compounds TiO, MnO, COO, and YH,. In all cases the present model represents the experimental data well. THE aim of this paper is to derive from statistical considerations the thermodynamic behavior of non-substitutional solid solutions. "Nonsubstitutional solid solution" means either an interstitial solid solution (carbon in iron, oxygen and hydrogen in hexagonal and bcc titanium, and so forth) or deviation from stoichiornetry in compounds (introduction of vacancies—removal of atoms in one or both lattice sites of compounds FeO, MnO, TiO, NbO, YH2). wagnerl and Fowler and Guggenheim considered the theory of compounds with small deviation from stoichiometry; Anderson includes larger deviations from stoichiometry, the defect being present in one component only, as vacancy and interstitial. Rees considers only vacancies in one of the components and introduces various kinds of sites for the component where the defect occurs; the various sites interact with different energies, thus giving isotherms with two or more plateaus. Both Rees and Anderson are mainly occupied in determining the limits of two-phase regions, and the defect interaction energy is determined from the critical point. Darken and Gurry5 gave a brief treatment of carbon solution in iron; Speiser and spretnak calculated the configurational entropy for binary interstitial solid solutions by assuming that each interstitial atom in the solution excludes a certain number of neighboring interstitial sites from occupancy. Use will be made of this concept later. Hoch et al treated transition metal oxides of the NaCl-type structure, and also oxygen solution in titanium.&apos; The main aim was to determine the behavior of the activity of one of the components as a function of the composition in the single-phase region. In the present paper, the various interaction energies are discussed in detail and the similarity between interstitial solid solutions and deviation from stoichiometry in ionic compounds is shown. Both types of systems have in common that at least on one kind of lattice site only one kind of atom occurs; this gives a fixed frame to the system, permitting a much easier statistical treatment than for the substitu-tional solid solutions. (The theory is also applied to ternary systems.) The difference between an interstitial solution and deviation from stoichiometry can be explained as follows. In an interstitial solution in the pure or standard state the host atom or host structure is present alone and all the interstitial sites which are going to be filled when the interstitial atom is introduced are empty. The interstitial solution is now created by introducing atoms into this empty lattice. In the deviation from stoichiometry, both kinds of lattice sites are already occupied in a special fashion (all lattice sites occupied, or the same fraction of lattice sites empty, or one kind completely filled, the other only two-thirds). Deviation from stoichiometry removes atoms from lattice sites, adds them, or removes atoms from one kind of lattice site and introduces them on the other lattice site. Though both cases (interstitial solution and deviation from stoichiometry) lead almost to the same equations, they are treated separately. The treatment given below corresponds to the "regular solution"10 treatment of substitutional solid solutions. Speiser and spretnak&apos;s6 treatment is similar to the athermal solution in the substitutional use. a) INTERSTITIAL SOLID SOLUTIONS Theory.
