This chapter discusses the evolution of high-speed shaft sinking in the South African goldfields. Whether we are talking of an additional shaft at an existing mine or the opening of a new mine, the increasing depth of the ore-bearing reef and the unremitting inflation of costs have provided the compelling incentive to shorten the time taken to sink a shaft and start earning revenue. The high costs of sinking a modern shaft system in South Africa are indicated by the recent example of a deep-level mine in the Orange Free State where the cost was nearly $22!42 million. This was for a single large shaft of 33 ft 6 in. diam (in all cases, shaft diameters refer to the finished diameter of the shaft, e.g., inside the concrete) and 7600 ft deep with a prestressed concrete brattice wall dividing the shaft into upcast and downcast compartments. Higher costs and the consequent demand for increased tonnages, deeper shafts with higher rock temperatures, which necessitate highly sophisticaled ventilation and refrigeration requirements, have all accentuated the importance of time in a shaft-sinking operation. Rectangular shafts with their simple design and comparatively reasonable sinking speeds remained popular for many years until greater mining depths combined with a host of the other allied problems inevitably led to changes in shaft design. Circular shafts appeared to offer many advantages, particularly when considering ventilation, strength, mechanization, and sinking through bad ground and heavily watered zones. However, these advantages were largely offset by the slow rate of advance necessitated by the need to stop sinking in order to line the shaft. The development of the curb ring which enabled lining to take place above the bottom of the shaft and the use of multideck stages allowing sinking and lining to be carried out concurrently resulted in a major break- through. Rectangular shafts, which are still popular elsewhere, have been superseded in South Africa by circular shafts which are almost without exception the only shafts sunk in our goldfields today.

Alteration of the electronic distribution of mineral surfaces by light irradiation has been used to modify the adsorption characteristics of flotation reagents. Energy of a few electron volts is suficient to cause the necessary transitions that either enhance or retard the adsorption phenomenon. The adsorption characteristics of potassium ethyl xanthate on galena and marmatite are presented as functions of the energy of illumination, type of semiconductor, and surface oxidation. In dilute solutions, the adsorption differences are readily detected by controlled kinetic measurements. The correlation between the electronic distribution and the adsorption and desorption phenomena at the solid surface is gaining more attention and acceptance. These interrelations have found a practical application in mineral processing since all of the sulfide minerals display semiconducting properties. By varying the ratio of free electron to electron vacancies, the separation of ilmenite from rutilel and zircon from pyrochlore" has been executed successfully. Plaksin et al.' indicate three possible ways of utilizing the semiconductor properties of a mineral. The first one involves the control of the oxidation-reduction potential of the liquid phase, the second one consists of allowing selected additives to diffuse through the mineral surface, while the third one entails a change in the adsorption and chemical activity of minerals by irradiating their surface. The aim of the present work is to consider the effect of irradiation on the adsorption-desorption characteristics of natural minerals. At the present time, the designer of dies for metal powder pressing is handicapped by relative ignorance of stress distribution and frictional effects at the interior surface of the die. Unckell was the first to develop a method for the study of wall friction. He used three Brinell balls on which the die rested during pressing. The total frictional wall force was determined by the size of impression these balls left on a soft metal plate. Since the method does not give radial pressures, or distribution of such pressures, coefficients of friction could not be determined. Although Unckel measured density distribution, he was not able to determine radial or shear stresses. Shaler2 has proposed theoretical expressions for the stress and density distribution within cylindrical compacts during pressing, in accordance with the experimental results of Kamm, Steinberg, and Wulff.3 By application of Siebel's method,4 Kamm et a13 plotted stress trajectories for two compacts. From the stress trajectories they calculated coefficients of friction from point to point along the die wall. As pointed out by Shaler in the discussion of Ref. 3, these values are based on progressive point-to-point calculations on finite size grid squares across the compact. In the region of the die wall such calculated values may therefore have considerable cumulative error. The purpose of the present paper is to develop an experimental method by which the nonhydrostatic pressures and shears acting on the interior wall of a cylindrical die can be measured. Such measurements can then he correlated with existing data to aid in the explanation of the pressing process. The method used is based on the elastic: properties of the thick-walled tube used as the die. The principle of super-position of force systems on an elastic body is assumed to hold. Electric strain gauges were mounted in adjacent positions on the exterior die wall in order to get an exact measurement of the variation of tangential strain over the length of the die during pressing. While in this paper, measurements in terms of only tangential strains are considered, it is well to note that similar calculations may be set up for axial strains. The latter are not preferred, since they tend to be smaller than the tangential strains and therefore permit less sensitive measurements. Discussion in this work is restricted to compacts pressed from both ends, since the elastic deformation of the die is then more amenable to analysis. Before choosing the electric strain gauge method, a more direct line of attack was considered and discarded. The discarded idea was the insertion of a pressure gauge through a hole in the die wall.* The gauge would have been in the form of a small piston. If pressure were exerted against such a gauge, it would move outward along a radius of the die. One disadvantage of the scheme is its inability to measure shears along the die wall. Another more serious disadvantage is the disturbance caused by the device itself. It would serve to change the forces it was designed to measure. No matter how small the movement of the gauge, when pressure is applied a discontinuity would exist in the wall surface at that point. Due to the stress concentration caused by the hole, abnormal deflections of the die wall would occur around the gauge. During pressing, powder would be forced into the resulting depression. The depression would then become larger with increasing compacting pressure. Powder, not being a fluid, is capable of supporting shear. The ease with which it would flow into the die wall depression to further move the piston is an indication, not of the radial pressure at that point, but of the state of shear retarding the movement. Thus the "pressure" gauge is really a criterion of flowability, and of the capability of the powder to support shear. For these reasons, it was decided that the electric strain method, herein employed, was more reliable, if more indirect. The gauges and lead wires, mounted on the external die wall do not in any way affect the behavior of the metal powder or the die during pressing. Theory of the Method THE EFFECT OF RADIAL PRESSURE ON THE DIE WALL Effect of a Single Small Band of Hydrostatic Pressure Consider a die which is a thick-walled cylinder of outer radius R. and inner radius Ri. If over a small finite length L there is a normal pressure P, a tangential strain distribution at the outer wall results. This is shown schematically in Fig 1. Believing that the results accomplished in the mill of the Churchill Milling Co., Wonder, Nev., during the fiscal year ended Sept. 30, 1914, will be of interest, I am presenting the more prominent facts and figures showing the progress made in treating this ore with especial reference to tonnage, supplies, costs, and extractions. The mill is situated at Wonder, Nev., in the Wonder mining district, 55 miles east from Fallon, Nev., the nearest railroad point. All supplies are hauled this distance by freight teams, this method of transportation having been found more reliable for continuous service than truclis, the price paid for hauling being slightly under one cent per pound. In this mill are treated the ores of the Nevada Wonder Mining Co. Ore is Unusually Hard The company which tested this ore before the mill was built reported "This ore is an unusually hard, tough, oxidized quartz, carrying a small percentage of high-grade sulphides, containing good values in both gold and silver. None of the rebellious silver minerals appear to occur in appreciable quantities." ... "In regard to the mill tonnage this ore is unusually hard and tough, and a high stamp duty cannot be expected. Using a 20-mesh screen and 1,050-lb. stamps, our best work was three tons per stamp per 24 hours." It is very probable that the ore delivered to the testing plant was harder than the regular mill run has proved to be. However, at present the mine is developed to a depth of 1,000 ft., and still shows hard ore in places at this depth in about the same proportion as on the upper levels from which the test ore came; during this year's work, ore was treated from nearly all levels. Together with this hard ore in the mill feed a considerable proportion appears to be broken down and tending to crumble, thus making an ideal mixture for stamp milling. A small proportion of talc is also noticeable, which sometimes increases in amount to the point where it is very troublesome in the thickeners.

There are few natural monopolies comparable with the nitrate industry. Perhaps the only other one is, curiously enough, also an essentia1 fertilizer material, viz., potash, of which the Germans have heretofore held practically a monopoly due to the existence in their territory of the most important known deposits of potash salts. And although nitrates in minute amounts are found in many desert regions, the only deposits capable of being worked commercially exist in Chile. Combined nitrogen in the oxidized form is an essential for plant life. Nature provides it mainly through the agency of nitrogen-fixing bacteria. But where lands are cropped artificially this supply is too small, and gradually the nitrogen supply becomes exhausted. In order to continue farming, it is necessary to furnish a supply of nitrogenous plant food, and this is done by putting on various substances containing combined nitrogen. These consist of various animal wastes, ammonium sulphate, the ammonia of which is obtained in the destructive distillation of coal, and Chile saltpeter. The latter is immediately available as a plant food, the nitrogen being in the required form. The other substances must oxidize before they are available. Resides its use as a fertilizer, Chile saltpeter is the source from which the bulk of the nitric acid of commerce is derived. The use of nitric acid in the manufacture of almost all modern explosives is, of course, well known. Importance of the Nitrate Industry Chilean nitrate, the existence of which was first mentioned in 1809, is said to have been first exported in 1830. Only a few thousand tons per annum were exported for some years, but the amount gradually increased until, in 1879, when the Chile-Peruvian war began, the export amounted to about 300,000 tons. This nitrate was largely produced from the Province of Tarapaca, until then, Peruvian territory. By the terms of peace with Peru in 1884, this province, as well as Tacna, became Chilean. The Bolivian Province of Antofagasta was also acquired as a result of this war, and thus Chile, with the deposits in her own territory, acquired control of the whole supply of nitrate. L. S. Darken—Laboratory investigation of deoxidizing and other steelmaking reactions is usually centered, at least first, on the determination of the equilibrium or equilibria involved. This seems a reasonable procedure since equilibrium, if attained, depends only on composition, temperature, and pressure; hence conclusions derived from data on small experimental quantities are applicable to a heat of steel providing eauilibrium is attained in both cases. A knowledge of equilibrium serves as a useful framework even though we may know that practical conditions do not correspond to complete equilibrium. On the other hand, nonequilibrium or rate phenomena depend on a wider variety of conditions and are more difficult to interpret; conclusions applicable to laboratory conditions may or may not apply to larger scale phenomena. Hence the attainment or nonattainment of true equilibrium in the experiments here reported is of critical importance in evaluating their significance. Since some of the statements in this paper and in the closely related preceding one (on aluminum deoxidation) imply some doubt on this matter, I should first like to ask the authors whether their conditions are intended and believed to represent equilibrium. I should like to point out three considerations which seem to cast considerable doubt on the achievement of equilibrium, at least of the particular equilibrium under consideration. 1. In the experiments on manganese deoxidation the authors point out that they could not maintain the manganese-oxide slag on top of the metal in their rotating crucible, and hence they substantially dispensed with this slag. This leads to serious trouble in the interpretation of the results, for any equilibrium is, of course, a particular specific equilibrium—in this case Mn + O = MnO The experimental deletion of the upper layer of manganese oxide means that if equilibrium is attained at all it is attained between the metal and the MnO which has soaked into or adhered to the crucible (under the metal) and has dissolved substantial amounts of the crucible material including impurities. These impurities may constitute a significant portion of the slag by virtue of the small total amount of slag, even though the crucible is relatively pure. Hence there would seem to be a strong presumption that the equilibrium (if attained) involves not a pure MnO (or MnO — FeO) slag but one saturated with alumina and containing perhaps considerable impurities which substantially lower the concentration and activity of MnO, causing the above reaction to proceed to the right further than it would in the absence of alumina and impurities. Hence it is not surprising that manganese here appears as a better deoxidizer than found by other investigators. The present results may represent equilibrium with a slag of unknown composition which seems unlikely to be particularly related to plant experience. 2. The curves representing the observed silicon deoxidation (figs. 3, 4, and 5) are all drawn with a discontinuity in slope at about 0.02 pct oxygen. This point is interpreted as corresponding to the three-phase equilibrium, metal, slag, solid silica. The type of construction shown in these figures (though apparently fitting the data) is contrary to a fundamental principle of heterogeneous equilibrium as pertains to the construction of phase diagrams. According to this principle, the two solubility curves (each of the two portions of the curves in figs. 3, 4, and 5) must intersect in such manner that their (metastable) extensions must lie outside the homogeneous field rather than inside as in these figures. In other words, the "point" in these curves should be aimed in the opposite direction, if it is to be interpreted as corresponding to the three-phase equilibrium. The construction adopted is in violation of the second law of thermodynamics. This matter is discussed in detail in several texts and also by Lipson and Wilson.&apos;" The same criticism applies to the later figures representing conditions for manganese additions. The occurrence of this discontinuity or break at 0.02 pct oxygen casts further doubt on its interpretation. The earlier investigation of this system by Korber and Oelsen is in substantial agreement with the several recent findings of Chipman and coworkers that the oxygen content of iron in equilibrium with silica and silica-saturated iron oxide slag is about one third to one half that (0.24 pct at 1600") of iron saturated with pure iron oxide; thus there seems reliable evidence that iron saturated with silica and iron silicate slag at 1600" contains about 0.1 pct oxygen, or certainly much more than the 0.02 pct proposed in this paper. 3. In the quarternary system iron-silicon-manganese-oxygen one of the equilibria involved may be written 2 Mn + SiO2 (solid) = 2 MnO <slag> + Si The activity of SiO, is constant (if equilibrium is attained) by virtue of its presence as a substantially pure solid. At not too low metallic manganese content, the activity of MnO in the slag is constant by virtue of the fact that the slag is substantially pure manganese silicate saturated with silica and hence of constant composition. Thus the equilibrium constant for the above reaction is asi/a2Mn. Barring unanticipated large changes in the activity coefficients, the equilibrium constant may be adequately approximated for the composition range covered as [% Si]/[% Mn]2. Thus a plot of log [% Mn] against log [% Si] would be expected to be linear with a slope of one half as found by Kijrber and Oelsen. In the present investigation the slope (shown in fig. 15) is found to be one. It is difficult to believe that this finding represents a correct equilibrium determination, since it is at odds both with prior experimental investigation and with. theory. In view of the above points it seems that, although this paper reports many interesting findings, there is room for considerable skepticism as to the attainment of equilibrium and as to the conclusions drawn. SINCE the publication of the paper of Mr. Scholz, The Effect of Humidity on Mine-Explosions,&apos; I have undertaken a study of the meager available data of barometric and temperature conditions it times of mine-explosions, and have arranged these data in a manner which may be of interest to other students of mine-explosions. This study covers the period from 1898 to 1909, during which an ever-increasing percentage of collieries has been ventilated by fans giving air-currents of high efficiency. Previous to 1898 this percentage was smaller than at any time since. The vari¬ous States have become, from time to time, more exacting in their demands upon poorly-ventilated mines. This general im¬provement in ventilation throughout the Appalachian field has undoubtedly brought about a condition which is annually the cause; .or a very important attendant, of the high percentage of fatalities in mine-explosions, through the daily passage of from hundreds to thousands of gallons of water, invisibly suspended in the air, carried out of the mines by the ventilating-currents during the existence of certain temperature- and humidity-conditions. There is a wide-spread opinion that these conditions exist from November 1 to March 31; but it is more likely that they have a much wider range, which varies from year to year. Certain years show an increase or decrease of rain-fall from the mean ; the daily temperature may fall far below or rise far above the mean established by a record of a period of years; and the daily humidity varies likewise. Though receiving little notice from aviation publications and national associations, this use of the airplane progressed by sheer merit. It saved money, conserved energies, and made minutes in the air the equal of weeks on foot or water. The advent of aviation into mining and petroleum operations dates back many years, yet it \vas not until the depression that this new facility of the mineral industry was put on its proper economic basis. THIS title introduces the subject I wish to describe to my fellow members, very few of whom, I hope, have ever had as much trouble with the smelting of ore containing much zinc, either in the lead blast furnace or the matting furnace, its circumstances have forced upon me: First, for several years in Leadville, Colo., after the sulphide ores containing zinc had been developed with greater depth and were sold to the interests with which I was connected for smelting in the blast furnace for the recovery of the lead, silver, and gold; then, in New Mexico and Arizona, where the principal source of ore supply for our custom smelter was from miners who sent most of their product in the form of concentrates, which we briquetted and smelted in the blast. furnace, producing a matte containing copper, silver, and gold, for which we were paid; together with some zinc and lead, which was penalized if in excess of a maximum base set by the refinery to which we sold our copper matte; last, but not least, my experience in Shasta county, Cal., where for the sake of recovering $13 per ton value in copper, silver, and gold, I have smelted ore containing as high as 40 per cent. zinc (the last. 18,951 tons smelted averaged 15 3/10, per cent. zinc) which we not only lost, but which it cost us money to lose.

At present the manufacture of metallic zinc, or spelter, in Missouri, is carried on only at the establishments located at Carondelet, or South St. Louis. Although the development of the industry has not yet reached that fulness which it has attained elsewhere in the United States, still the commanding advantages of position of these establishments are so evident that the prospective importance and magnitude of spelter manufacture in this State, and especially at this locality, can hardly be doubted. A study of the chemical and technical aspects of the business of these points cannot be without interest to the metallurgist as well as to the capitalist. I have endeavored to investigate, as far as was practicable, within the limits of a paper of this character, some of the problems connected with this industry, at the same time making a few comparisons of the results attained at some of the Carondelet works with those of other establishments with regard to which information could be obtained. In the prosecution of these studies I have been kindly aided by the managers of Carondelet establishments, and by Prof. Charles P. Williams, Director of Rolla School of Mines. To the latter I am especially indebted for assistance in regard to methods of analysis. To all these gentlemen I return my thanks for their valuable aid. Other sources of information will be duly credited in their proper places.

IN selecting the subject, "Acceleration of the Rate of Corrosion by High Constant Stresses," for the 1940 Institute of Metals Division Lec-ture, I have been influenced by its highly theoretical and speculative nature as well as by the great practical importance of the correct inter-pretation and appraisal of the engineering significance of the phenomenon. I lay no claim to originality in talking on this topic, since it has been the subject of discussion for over a quarter of a century. However, as our technical thinking advances, old phenomena take on new and more significant aspects. In our studies at the Aluminum Research Labora-tories, we have encountered many perplexing and seemingly contradictory results and have been fascinated by the problem of dovetailing all of the many pieces of information to make a complete picture. I hope that in the brief period of this lecture I may share with you some of the enjoy-ment we have had in attempting to meet this challenge to metallur-gical science. The emphasis generally has been placed on the spontaneous failure by cracking of a metal under the combined action of high stress and corrosion, hence the present-day use of the terms "stress corrosion" or "stress corrosion cracking." The older term "season cracking," applied more specifically to copper-base alloys, includes, by inference, the element of time. For the purpose of the discussion today I will use "stress corro-sion" to cover broadly the effect of stress in accelerating the rate of corrosion of metals. To stay within the limits of allotted time the dis-cussion will cover the effect of high static stresses rather than repeated or dynamic stresses, which would take us into the related field of corro-sion-fatigue. The subject is particularly appropriate for an Institute of Metals Division Lecture because much the same phenomenon has been observed in almost all metal systems. THOSE of you who, like myself, have had the privilege of hearing previous Howe Memorial Lectures will note, and I hope without too much disaffection, that for the first time in this series of lectures iron has been chosen as the subject. I feel sure that the predominant choice by previous lecturers of subjects relating to steel has been principally in deference to the well-known interest this subject held for Professor Howe, and that their choice has not reflected any lack of respect for the material, iron. Nevertheless, in the face of this record, I feel some diffidence in introducing this "Cinderella" of materials into the circle of distinguished subjects hitherto treated by Howe lecturers, which is relieved only by the fact that I hope to be able to present some evidence that this Cinderella has at last undergone some of those magical trans-formations which render her acceptable even in the society of her dis-tinguished sister, steel. Fortunately I can cite the old master himself in support of my choice of subject and recall to you that Professor Howe by no means overlooked or neglected cast iron in the long course of his metallurgical meditations. Indeed his attention was early arrested by a metallurgical aspect of cast iron which he believed and we still recognize as of the most funda-mental importance-namely, the genesis of graphite in gray iron and the means for the control of its quantity and distribution. He made some comments over 20 years ago regarding the nature of J. E. Johnson&apos;s oxygenated iron which indicate that even then his thoughts were taking directions which today we are finding it useful to explore in connection with the theory of high-strength iron. Had we had in the subsequent years the continuing benefit of Professor Howe&apos;s illuminating consider-ation of this important subject, our progress in the improvement of cast iron would undoubtedly have been even more rapid.

The rates of migration of high-angle boundaries in zone-refined aluminum crystals rolled 20 to 70 pct in the (110)[i12/ orientation were studied. Following a recovery anneal at an appropriate temperature to stabilize the polygonized structure, boundary migration rates of artificially nucleated grains were measwed isothermally at several temperatures. Results indicate that the rate of boundary migration depends strongly on the amount of deformation and on the cell size of the polygonized matrix, and is related to the driving free energy by a power function. The degree of anisotropy in growth 0.f the re crystallized grains nn&apos;th preferred mientation is independent of deformation; the migration rates of the fast-moving and the slow-moping boundary segments of a gowing grain differ by as much as one order of magnitude. The actir\ation energy fm a grain boundary migration, although nearly the same for both the fast-moving and the slow-moving boundaries for a given deformalion, decreases from 45 to 30 kcal per mole with an increase in deformation from 20 to 70 pct reduction. Re crstallization by the growth of the artificially nucleated grains results in preferred orientation. The Percentuge of&apos; grains favorably oriented for growth increases with increasing deformation. None of these grains corresponds to the ideal Kronberg-Wilson orientation relationship. The observed growth aniso-tropy is discussed in terms of boundary structure. The boundary velocity as a function of the cell inter -facial area, or the driving free energy, is discussed in the light of current theories of boundary migration. It is well established that recrystallization with re-orientation occurs by the migration of high-angle boundaries of strain-free grains. The driving force for this process is provided by the free energy stored in the metal during deformation. A quantitative study of the effect of varying driving force on grain boundary migration in deformed metals has not been possible heretofore, primarily because of: 1) concurrent recovery steadily decreasing the available driving free energy for boundary migration, &apos;-3 and 2) in-homogeneity of strain in the deformed metal.4 Aust and Rutter3 studied grain boundary migration in striated single crystals of zone-refined lead. Although the driving free energy in such crystals remains unaltered during annealing, this method does not provide a range of driving free energies over which measurements of grain boundary migration can be made. In the present investigation, the rates of migration of high-angle boundaries in deformed aluminum zone- refined single crystals were studied at various temperatures, after deformation ranging from 20 to 70 pct reduction by rolling at -78°C in the (ll0)[i12] orientation. The boundary migration rates along different crystallographic directions were determined under steady-state conditions, i.e., in the absence of competing recovery processes or impingement of recrystallized grains growing into the deformed single crystal matrix. Simultaneous recovery was eliminated by suitable anneals prior to the boundary migration measurements. The recrystallized grains, which grew a ni so tropically into the homogeneously polygonized matrix, developed flat boundary segments during early stages of growth. These boundary segments subsequently migrated along a direction approximately normal to the boundary plane into the matrix rystal. Increasing deformation over the range employed was estimated to increase the driving free energy for boundary migration by about five times. The kinetics of the boundary migration process, examined under these conditions, indicate that the boundary velocity is greatly affected by a small change of the driving free energy in the matrix crystals. These results were examined in the light of the current theories of grain boundary migration. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Single crystal strips (9 by 1 by 0.125 in.) of zone-refined aluminum, were seed-grown by the Bridgman method in a high-purity graphite mold (<lo ppm ash) at 1 in. per hr. Precautions were taken to minimize contamination of the metal during crystal preparation and subsequent handling. Spectrographic analysis of the metallic impurities in the grown crystals is Qven in Table I. The crystals were rolled in the (110)[112] orientation at -78°C to various reductions in thickness, ranging from 20 to 70 pct, in 10 pct increments. The desired reduction was achieved by many rolling passes, each being no more than 0.002 in. To minimize surface friction, the crystal was rolled between two thin layers of teflon. For those crystals rolled more than 40 pct, it was necessary to remove the disturbed surface layers by electropolishing at -5" to -10°C at an intermediate stage of rolling. The edges of deformed crystals were removed by a jeweler&apos;s saw while submerged in alcohol at -78° C to obtain samples of about ? by i in. The distorted metal at the cut edges and the surface layers were then removed by electropolishing, with removal of a minimum of 0.004 in. from each surface. The thickness of the crystals prior to rolling was chosen so that the final thickness was 0.025 in. for all samples. These deformed single crystals were each prean-nealed for 1 hr at an appropriate temperature in the range of 130" to 280°C, depending upon the amount of deformation. IN last year&apos;s report on the progress of geophysics, the airborne magnetometer was the featured new development. At that time only a relatively small number of surveys had been made. During 1947, the airborne magnetometer was used in making many surveys and is again one of the high lights of the year in geophysics. This report is mainly concerned with geophysics as applied to the search for minerals exclusive of petroleum. In 194,5 and 1946, the use of the magnetic method reached a peak, partly because of an active period of prospecting brought on by an active mining market, particularly in Canada.

This paper attempts a survey of the principles involved in the combustion of blast-furnace gas in boilers and stoves. I do not expect to be able to give much information which is actually new, since the laws and methods of calculation pertaining to this problem are contained in a number of handbooks; but, so far as I am aware, they have nowhere been treated exclusively with reference to this one problem of gas economy. The road which I follow is less that of strictly scientific research than that of the practical engineer, faced by operation problems which require a quick solution by easily accessible means without a prolonged search in scientific handbooks. For this purpose I give a number of tables and diagrams, as well as the results of many years1 practical working experience as combustion engineer, which I trust will prove useful to my readers. HlSTORICAL Considering the tremendous efforts made during the last 15 years to increase the efficiency of all kinds of power plants, it is highly surprising that until a comparatively very recent period, progress in the economical combustion of blast-furnace gas has been so slow, The explanation generally put forth, that fuel has been so cheap that it was hardly worth while to bother about this economy, will not hold good, for the greatest trouble was taken to improve the combustion of coal and to reduce the consumption of steam, The most plausible explanation appears to be the general impression, held as an accepted fact, that gas, especially hot, uncleaned, blast-furnace gas, was not a good boiler fuel. Many managers of high repute had tried unsuccessfully to improve the conditions of its use, and the dictum went forth that efficiencies of over 60 per cent., particularly with high loads, were impossible. This was the situation not only in the United States, with very cheap fuel, but also in Europe, where fuel prices are twice and three times as high.

DURING the year 1873, my attention was called to the frequent accidents, resulting from the breaking of rails, on the different railroads in this&apos; country, and I was requested to investigate the subject. The plan of investigation I proposed was to ascertain, in as many cases as possible, the exact hist* of broken rails, both in this country and in Europe; to collect information in Europe relating to the tests which rails used there were required to undergo, and to experiment upon the pieces of rails broken on the road, with a view to ascertain whether their fracture was due to their chemical constitution, bad manufacture, to a reduction in strength owing to temperature, or to physical changes in the constitution of the rail. The investigation was commenced by the collection of statistics, and for this purpose I spent several months in Europe, collecting information on the subject of broken rails, as well as the life of iron and steel rails generally, and inquiring into the systems of purchasing and of testing them employed by the railroads there, intending, on my return, to make a series of analyses of rails broken, both in this country and in Europe; to ascertain, if possible, how far great cold had an influence on the fracture; to examine whether the rail broken, either on the road or afterwards, underwent, at or about the fracture, any physical change, and to make a series of experiments on the strength of rails manufactured in the United States or sold in the American market. In selecting the subject, "Acceleration of the Rate of Corrosion by High Constant Stresses,&apos;&apos; for the 1940 Institute of Metals Division Lecture, I have been influenced by its highly theoretical and speculative nature as well as by the great practical importance of the correct interpretation and appraisal of the engineering significance of the phenomenon. I lay no claim to originality in talking on this topic, since it has been the subject of discussion for over a quarter of a century. However, as our technical thinking advances, old phenomena take on new and more significant aspects. In our studies at the Aluminum Research Laboratories, we have encountered many perplexing and seemingly contradictory results and have been fascinated by the problem of dovetailing all of the many pieces of information to make a complete picture. I hope that in the brief period of this lecture I may share with you some of the enjoyment we have had in attempting to meet this challenge to metallurgical science. The emphasis generally has been placed on the spontaneous failure by cracking of a metal under the combined action of high stress and corrosion, hence the present-day use of the terms "stress corrosion" or "stress corrosion cracking." The older term "season cracking," applied more specifically to copper-base alloys, includes, by inference, the element of time. For the purpose of the discussion today I will use "stress corrosion" to cover broadly the effect of stress in accelerating the rate of corrosion of metals. To stay within the limits of allotted time the disrussiorl will cover the effect of high static stresses rather than repeated or dynamic stresses, which would take us into the related field of corrosion-fatigue. The subject is particularly appropriate for an Institute of Metals Division Lecture because much the same phenomenon has been observed in almost all metal systems. Thus, in addition to the season cracking of brass may also be mentioned the "caustic embrittlement" of steel boiler
