A research program was conducted to determine the relationship between operating conditions and medium losses in Mt Newman Mining's Beneficiation Plant. It was found that major medium losses were adherence losses and losses fran the overflow from the water recovery cyclones. Operating density and medium blend were found to have a significant effect on the medium consumption. Viscosity was thought to be the underlying factor. This viscosity problem was overcame by adding dilution water to the cyclone spigot discharge to reduce viscosity. The result was a reduction in medium consumption of 25 percent under normal operating conditions. Keywords:- Heavy Medium, Viscosity, Medium Carposition

Key incompatible element ratios for metabasalts from the Early Permian Croisilles and Patuki Volcanics, South Island, New Zealand, provide constraints on the tectonic environment in which their precursor ophiolitic protolith formed. Two geochemically distinct metabasalt suites are recognised among both the Croisilles and Patuki rocks. Metabasalts from one suite exhibit the geochemical signatures of depleted tholeiites from oceanic spreading ridges (N-type MORB) or spreading centres in evolved back-arc basins. These N-type tholeiites show high Zr/Nb ratios (Zr/Nb = 37-62) and are depleted in light rare earth elements (LREE)((La/Y)N

The Inquiry into the 1994 accident at Moura No. 2 Colliery included in it's findings that mine escape and rescue options for persons in underground coal mines were in need of review. The Inquiry recommended the establishment of industry working groups to report to the Queensland Chief Inspector of Coal Mines on matters including escape strategy and life support for escape from mines.One of these task groups examined issues relevant to self-escape from Australian underground coal mines and formulated recommendations and guidelines in response to the terms of reference and scope.

The author presents various procedures for the choice of dri-ving systems for mining, including the method of indeterminate Lagrange factors and linear programming.The possible application of the points-awarding method is demonstrated.It allows for taking into account both surd and commensurable characteristics of a driving system for mining. Also, the method of economic efficiency factors is outlined.All these methods make possible the best choice of a driving system, from the as-pect of electric energy saving. Two examples are given.

Conditional simulation is a branch of geo- statistics which allows the simulation of a mineral deposit so that predictions can be made about the variability of some particular parameter of the deposit. A summary of the general principles, advantages and limitations of conditional simulation is presented together with an example based on coal seam thickness.

For many years the mining industry at Broken Hill, New South Wales, Australia, was carried on with just sufficient attention to underground ventilation and hygiene conditions as to keep pace with necessity. However, the campaign against industrial diseases in other mining centres (notably South Africa) some years ago, brought the subject more prominently before local mining engineers.Throughout a period of several years, gradual improvement has been effected, and at the present time industrial hygiene is considered an essential part of the production operations of the various companies.In June, 1918, a move was first made by the Board of Trade advising an inquiry respecting the health of employees engaged in the metalliferous mining industry in the State of New South Wales. At the end of that year, a recommendation was made to the State Government by the Board of Trade that a Techni.cal Commission of Inquiry be appointed to examine and report upon the dust conditions of the metalliferous mines at Broken Hill. Following this a second report presented in 1919 made specific recommendations in respect to the scope of such a Commission. A Technical Commission of Inquiry was accordingly appointed and arrived in Broken Hill to inquire into the prevalence of miner's phthisis and pneumonoconiosis in the mines. Early in March, 1920, the examination of all mine employees commenced, and the work was completed in June, 1920. The ability of the Australian minerals industry to successfully manage the changes and challenges that face it in the 21st century depends ultimately on the quality of its human resources. Mining engineers have a vital role in this regard. The education and training that universities are currently giving to mining engineers is under challenge and needs to be reassessed in the light of industry directions for the 21st century. At one extreme is a push for a `finished product' graduate, up and running in `the flavour of the month' issues. At the other extreme are moves to reduce face-to-face university teaching hours and return to the time honoured university concept of `reading' for a degree. The lessons of Mourn make it apparent that neither approach is appropriate to the industry's future needs (Windridge, 1996). Basic knowledge gets rusty with time and new skills need to be learned. In order to conduct mining operations safely, productively and competitively, mining engineers must now accept the need to be prepared for continuing professional development as a career imperative. The concept of being professionally or statutorily qualified for life is no longer valid. This calls into question the purpose, content, structure and mode of delivery of university courses, all of which need to engender the principle and facilitate the cause of continuing professional development. This paper presents a model which aims to deliver a quality assured university education for mining engineers for the 21st century at undergraduate, postgraduate and professional level. The model extends beyond traditional university boundaries to match industry requirements to international best practice. It is based on collaborative alliances and innovative presentation modes which will provide industry access to undergraduate and postgraduate course elements presented by a broad range of national and international academic and industry authorities. It offers the prospect for preserving the best of university ideals in higher education, for developing and maintaining programs of direct relevance to industry needs and for a structured involvement in the continuing professional development of mining engineers.

The Wambo Rail Spur located near Singleton, New South Wales, Australia, runs for approximately 14 km linking the Mt Thorley rail loop and the Wambo Coal Mine. The project involves a 260 m long tunnel in weathered sedimentary and intrusive materials. The tunnel has a low cover and runs under a main highway. This second paper on the project looks into one aspect of the tunnel in detail: the use of shotcrete arch as the primary support for part of the tunnel excavation. The use of shotcrete instead of steel arch, formulation of the material specification, construction sequencing, installation at the excavated face and material testing for verification related to this facet of the project will be discussed in this paper. The tunnel opened in April 2006, and two years on, we briefly reflect on the impact of this design decision on the overall project.

This paper deals with a few aspects of town planning and town management which affect human relationships within that town. Its scope is limited to the consideration of towns forming an adjunct to a mining operation, and particularly considers these aspects at the Hamersley Iron Pty. Limited, town of Parabur doo, Western Australia. Planning and standards of a new town and amenities are-discussed and related through living comfort to an effect on human relation- ships. Town administration and the promotion of many forms of social activities are dealt with in detail to illustrate the importance of quickly forming a cohesive community from a large number of newly arriving individuals. The results achieved by the planning and administration at Paraburdoo are highlighted by involving many residents by way of answers to a questionnaire.

The copper deposits at Pernatty Lagoon are predominately djurleite-digenite bodies beneath the permanent water table, and chrysocolla-atacamite-malachite above the permanent water table. The minerals havebeen deposited as sheets, lobes, and pods in zones suggestive of permeability channels or permeability basius with respect to groundwater circulation.Pyrite is deposited in the form of framboids, which reflects its biogenic origin. Copper-iron sulphides deposit by replacement of pre-existent pyrite, and rarely by direct deposition. The latter mode of formation results in complex crustification bandings of chalcopyrite, bornite, sulphur rich bornites, digenite, and blue remaining covellites. The copper-iron sulphides appear to reequilibrate under constrained oxidation, resulting in an iron depletion and associated copper enrichment, the final product of which is a djurleite-digenite assemblage and associated with goethite. Where copper mineralization/ host rock relationships have rendered the rocks entirely impermeable to post ore groundwater movement, then the copper-iron sulphides are preserved as the ore assemblages.Minor and trace minerals observed include sphalerite, carrollite, galena, wittichenite, and possibly tetrahedrite in the primary ores. In the oxidized ores cllprite, tenorite, and trace brochantite have been found.

Exploration risk increases with time, due to a general decrease in prospectivity as the more accessible deposits are found, and be- cause of rising costs and demands due to an improving standard of living. Risk is separated into financial risk, which increases sharply at the development stage, and the risk of failure which is at its peak at the outset of exploration. Risk is also divided into internal and external factors; some of the latter cannot be offset, viz. the systematic overall risk for any enterprise. The recently emergent risk embodied in withdrawal of large areas from exploration access is discussed. An appeal is made for objective multiple land-use policies to be applied so that land remains available at reasonable cost and with appropriate environ- mental safeguard conditions. Risks specific to gold exploration are discussed. As gold now accounts for over 50% of all mineral exploration, and most other metals are depressed, any sharp decline in gold will have grave effects on the ex- ploration industry. Gold exploration will become more difficult and expensive in about five years, after most of the readily accessible deposits in Australia are found. Government's role is important in pro- viding stability and basic data at reasonable cost. Exploration for specific minerals or of particular areas could be stimulated by extending the 150%.tax deductibility of R & D to aspects of exploration of strategic im- portance, particularly in the event of a downturn. Exploration is classic scientific research, at least through to the proving Stages.

Supergene enrichment of ilmenite occurs through a complex series of reactions with initial oxidation and hydration followed by leaching and dehydration. Lateritization appears to be associated with the early phase of the supergene process and if ilmenite grains are encased in iron oxides no further alteration proceeds.

Major occurrences of platinum group minerals (PGM) are in crustally-contaminated, huge, layered igneous complexes (Bushveld and Stillwater) and gabbroic intrusions (Norilsk); relatively minor occurrences include arc-related æzoned Alaskan ultramaficsÆ. In terms of arc-related provenances, the recognition of alluvial PGM in river and beach deposits of southern South Island (Mitchell, 1995), in situ in the Longwoods (Cowden et al, 1990), and the ultramafic-mafic layered Greenhills Complex at Bluff (Spandler et al, 2000) raise the possibility that some economically-significant PGM deposits may exist in New Zealand. The Longwoods and Greenhills are in the Brook Street Terrane which is a remnant of a primitive intra-oceanic arc system of Late Permian-Early Triassic age. The Terrane comprises volcanogenic sequences containing plagioclase- and clinopyroxenephyric basalts, high-MgO ankaramite and dolerite dikes, trondhjemite plutons, and basaltic to andesitic volcaniclastic and sedimentary rocks. The cumulate complexes contain early-formed olivine- and clinopyroxene-rich ultramafic cumulates overlain by anorthite and hornblende-bearing gabbros. Primary (isoferroplatinum) and secondary (sperrylite) platinum group minerals are preserved in chrome-rich spinel pods in basal dunite of the Greenhills Complex. Saturation during early fractionation of primitive high-MgO magmas rather than magma mixing seems likely for the primary PGM. Together with correlative terranes in Queensland and New Caledonia, the Brooks Street Terrane is an exposed cross-section of an extensive Permo-Triassic island-arc system. Most parental magmas were primitive island-arc tholeiites, but other primary magma-types include high-MgO ankaramites and trondhjemites û the latter formed by partial melting of lower crustal clinopyroxene-rich cumulates and gabbros, respectively. The parental ankaramites fractionated to form mafic-ultramafic cumulates and primitive to evolved melts of high-Al basalt to andesite compositions (Takitimus). The Brook Street Terrane is an analogue for modern intra-oceanic islandarc systems and allows detailed study of subvolcanic arc processes.

Analysis of mechanical size fractions of soils around the Paddington deposit (W.A.) and the Charters Towers Goldfields (Queensland) shows a bimodal gold distribution, with enrichment in the coarsest and finest fractions; this is probably a common feature of soils in arid terrains. To establish the true distribution of Au within the soil fractions, the effect of bulk Au content and percent weight variations in size fractions can be reduced by a normali- zing procedure. The greatest extent of lateral dispersion of Au recorded in the -125 ¦m fraction at Paddington and the -63 ¦m in the Charters Towers area as compared to the coarser fractions, and increas- ed levels of sample representivity in the finer fractions, favours their use in exploration. If orientation studies indicate the preferen- tial use of coarse or intermediate fractions, only wet sieving can quantitatively dis- aggregate the clays and remove finer contamina- ting material. The collection of extremely fine fractions such as the -63 ¦m is also accelerated by wet sieving. The additional costs of wet sieving may be offset by better interpretation of results through increased analytical sample representivity, anomaly contrast and continuity.

A block model of the orebody is used to plan a mine. The first requirement is to identify ore to be extracted, discarding waste, so as to meet target grade, generally in multiple analytes. Commonly, cut-off values are set for each analyte, so as to distinguish ore from waste. It will be shown that, if more than one analyte is important, this procedure is wasteful of ore and a composite cut-off function is preferable.A second requirement is to sequence the ore extraction so that the variability in ore grade is controlled: failure to do so will result either in low-quality ore being marketed, or excessive re-handling being required to blend the ore to reduce the grade variability.A third requirement is that the extraction sequence should be such as to control the amount of equipment movement required, enhancing the equipment productivity.The overall objective, to optimise the Net Present Value (NPV) of the mined ore, is simply stated but complex in realisation, since so many factors, such as target grade, grade variability, equipment choice, equipment movement, and downstream blending all have alternatives which can be traded off against each other, and all of which contribute to the costs and benefits making up the total NPV.There exist commercial packages for ore selection and mine planning. However, they are often of a ‘black box’ nature, and users are sometimes not fully aware of the criteria being applied. In particular, the treatment of quality as a multidimensional vector may be problematic. The purpose of this paper is to discuss some of the issues involved and to suggest an alternative set of approaches, which should complement existing commercial treatments.The discussion will be illustrated specifically by reference to the mining of iron ore, but the issues are relevant to a wide variety of mining situations

Mine-groundwater interaction at the Pasminco Rosebery Mine (PRM), western Tasmania, deserves special attention due to the unique climate and mining environment present. High rainfall and low evapotranspiration result in an excess of water, an uncommon problem at Australian sulfide bearing mines. Research is being undertaken to delineate current subsurface fluid flows and predict future fluid flows in order to improve management after mine closure. Acid mine drainage generation is well developed in abandoned mines throughout the area. If acid mine drainage is not controlled after mine closure, significant environmental degradation could occur in the receiving waters of the Pieman River system. The study area encompasses the heavily forested Mount Black, and underlying PRM workings. Groundwater flows beneath Mount Black through a crystalline fractured rock aquifer with faults and underground mine workings observed to act as the major hydraulic conduits. Recharge is controlled by local precipitation, and the ultimate discharge is thought to be the Pieman River system, which forms the topographic low in the area. Slug tests have been used in conjunction with the mineÆs extensive geotechnical database to spatially evaluate variation in hydraulic conductivity. In fractured rock terrain associated with mining, rock quality designation data can be a useful tool in delineating areas of similar hydraulic conductivity when combined with conventional hydrogeological methods. A GIS, mine planning software, an environmental and a geological database are linked to form the input for groundwater modelling.
