All are becoming increasingly important in corporate management as new legislation confers increasing personal liability on directors, executives and staff of corporations and agencies in both private and public sectors.

The needs for improved technology for the mineral industry are widely recognised and a summary list is given. Ways in which technology has been introduced into the industry are discussed, as are the means by which the general process of technology transfer takes place. Some possible sources of improved and new technology are considered, together with the constraints to its introduction into the industry. Responses to recent external influences on the industry are discussed in relation to their effects on technology development.

The Australian mining industry has changed dramatically over the past 20 years in terms of mining methods, mining equipment and human resource policies. The industryÆs approach to safety and health in terms of attitudes, style of legislation, and risk management techniques has also changed significantly. These changes have had and continue to have major impacts on the design of underground mine ventilation systems. In some areas, trends are clearly emerging. In other areas, mine ventilation planning remains very æreactiveÆ and is performing poorly in terms of providing a safe and healthy work environment at a reasonable cost. New concepts involving the role of ramps and shafts, the provision of refrigerated air, æventilation on demandÆ and newe gress and entrapment approaches are likely to be incorporated into mine planning and operating practices over the next ten years. This paper discusses these and other trends and identifies some likely future developments in the area of hardrock mine ventilation.

Spatial modelling has been used to determine potential locations of granite-related nickel skarn mineralisation throughout eastern Australia. It is believed that during granite intrusion, fluid can leach nickel from nearby mafic lithologies and combine with sulfur to form nickel sulfides. Currently exploration for this style of deposit has been limited to the region around the Avebury Deposit in western Tasmania. As the lithologies near Avebury are not unique it is feasible that similar deposits could exist elsewhere in Australia. The weights of evidence spatial data modelling technique was used to evaluate the wealth of geological data available over eastern Australia and included known economic deposits as training data to weight the themes of the model. These weighted themes were combined to create a prospectivity map showing areas favourable for granite-related nickel deposits. Several regions were identified by the model to have good potential to host nickel mineralisation similar to the Avebury deposit. These include areas located throughout New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, the Tasman District of New Zealand and, in particular, the Rockhampton region of eastern Queensland. Following a long period of increase, there has been a reduction in exploration expenditure and activity in Australia over the past two years. During the post Second World War period, exploration was largely driven by mining companies seeking resources to satisfy an increase in world demand, while increasing their asset base as a result of mineral discoveries. In general, return on investment to shareholders was not the major driving force. With the exception of gold the mining industry has been faced with a long-term fall of metal prices in real terms. As a result the net profit return on average shareholderÆs funds in the Australian minerals industry has fallen from over 20 per cent in 1990 to less than five per cent today. Mining is now competing for funds with communication and finance based industries yielding high returns on shareholder investment. Shareholders and superannuation fund managers seeking a high return on short-term investments have indirectly reduced the funds available to the mining industry. Globalisation of the mining industry is leading to the rationalisation of the Australian mining industry as witnessed by mergers and acquisitions of local companies by foreign investors. The return on capital invested in the Australian mineral exploration industry must improve if the industry is to be competitive on a worldwide basis. Failure to achieve this will result in capital flowing overseas or to other industries. Relatively short-term upswings in metal prices which are generally driven by threats to the supply base (eg strikes, mine closures, increases in country risk) often lead to increased capital raisings for exploration funding. As a consequence of the time taken to raise the capital and increase exploration activity, measured exploration activity lags the metal price increases. There are also lags between commencement of exploration and discovery and ore production. In the case of gold exploration expenditure peaked six years after the price rise of 1980 Companies persevering with exploration in the current difficult period will be rewarded because they will be able to capitalise on future metal price rises and a minimised time lag.

Dr Claude Martin,Director General,WWF International The four quotes above well illustrate the challenges faced by companies and conservationists in attempting to achieve the societal goal of sustainable development. That this aspirational goal itself is far from clearly defined, although it has been widely accepted and endorsed by governments, business and civil society, exacerbates the challenges. Sustainable development has as its central thesis the integration of environmental, social and economic policy. Its attainment by business has been described John Elkington (1998) as the pursuit of the ætriple bottom lineÆ - the achievement of social and environmental targets, in addition to the traditional economic bottom line. It is self-evident that business is both competent and comfortable defining and measuring economic performance and reporting that performance to internal and external audiences. As long as information has been prepared according to the established standards of measurement and reporting of economic performance, all audiences can have confidence in its accuracy. Business does not enjoy the same competence and comfort with regard to social and environmental performance. This is no startling condemnation of business, any more than it is a criticism of governments, non-government organisations (NGOs) or academia. It is a statement of fact that the tools to allow for credible definition and reporting against the other two components of the ætriple bottom lineÆ have yet to be fully developed and are, therefore, far from being widely accepted. Crucial to achieving sustainability is the ability to measure progress toward the goal. The task is to develop means to define appropriate performance standards and to credibly measure and report company environmental and social performance against those standards.

Many problems occur in recruiting staff to remote mining operations, relating to both domestic and works environments. These are stated, together with steps which have been taken to overcome them. Geographical and climatic conditions applying to the Agnew mining operation are described. Company policies have been established to define criteria for selection of staff, and to define methods by which the criteria are applied.

This paper discusses recent ore reserve methodology at the Woodlawn base metal Mine in New South Wales. The ownership of the Mine changed hands in 1987 and a number of revisions to ore reserve practice were instigated by the new operators. While the overall modeling and calculation procedure remained essentially unaltered, the modifications and revised assumptions significantly increased the ore reserve. While general ore reserve procedures are discussed in this paper, it is the impact of these changed assumptions on the reserves which is our main focus.

The Palmer River rises in the Windsor Tablelands area of the Paleozoic Hodgkinson Basin, 110 kilometres northwest of Cairns. It flows west across the Palmerville Fault and Proterozoic Dargalong Metamorphics to the Mitchell River. East of the Palmerville Fault, its course lies immediately south of the onlapping Mesozoic Laura Basin conglomerates, sandstones and siltstones.Gold occurs in quartz reefs in the Hodgkinson rocks of the Maytown District, in narrow quartz veins in the Dargalong Metamorphics, in the basal conglomerates of the Mesozoic, and more importantly, in alluvial bars within the Palmer River.

Concentration ranges are presented for 15 trace elements not previously reported in Australian bituminous coals. The results were obtained by instrumental neutron activation analysis, which has sufficiently high sensitivity to enable determination of many elements directly in coal at concentrations less than a few µg/g. The ranges found in Australian coal are similar to the ranges reported in North American bituminous coals.

Back at the turn of the century, the Eastern Goldfields region of Western Australia was entering its moment of glory. Development was going ahead at a cracking pace and miles of shaft and drives were being opened up. On the Great Boulder Gold mine alone, records show that there were two kilometres of shaft and 30 kilometres of -driving completed in the first five years of operation.Similar statistics were being achieved by hundreds of other mines on the Golden Mile and in other districts in WA.

An ore reserve estimation is only as meaningful as the quality of the data used. All required information needs to be collected in a careful and systematic manner, and be rigorously checked and verified before estimation commences. In addition to geological, assay and location data, a large variety of other information is required for the estimation process. This includes mining, metallurgical and environmental parameters. Though outside their usual area of responsibility, geologists should be involved in the selection and collection of this additional Information.

The perennial challenge facing mining and minerals operators is to improve productivity, usually by a combination of cost reduction and performance improvement. In a typical production situation involving mining and processing activities, the standard approach has long been to seek improvements in each activity, effectively in isolation from each other. However, the realisation is growing that there is considerable potential to achieve really substantial productivity gains by much improved integration of mining and processing with the key being to consider what is best in the total sense. Some of the linkages between fragmentation in mining and downstream processing are considered in this paper. These linkages involve technical, operational and economic Considerations.

Selenium is a minor constituent of the raw materials processed by the Cockle Creek smelter of Sulphide Corporation Pty. Limited. Certain proposed raw materials contain higher levels of selenium, and these will create a problem with regard to the composition of liquid effluent discharged from the smelter. A method has been developed for removing selenium from the smelter circuit by the sulphation of the fume collected in the Acid Plant electrostatic-precipitators. It is planned that by treating 10-20% of the total dust arisings there will be a substantial reduction in the levels of selenium reporting in effluents when treating selenium-bearing raw materials. The selenium is recovered in elemental form.

Brisbane based and listed on the ASX, Eastern Corp is pursuing the development of coal projects in New Zealand. There are various reasons why New Zealand coals are of interest û substantial resources, stable political/economic environment, close to Asian markets. In just over 12 months, Eastern has secured an operating coal mine (Cascade) and a prospective exploration area (Whareatea West), both on the Denniston plateau region, on the south islandÆs west coast. A key focus of activities is the development of relationships with key stakeholders and the promotion of the local economy.   Certain barriers may exist to the entrance by foreign companies into the New Zealand coal mining sector. These include geological challenges provided by the heavy faulting of the coals, port and rail infrastructure constraints, and the ægreenÆ factor.

Does coal mining get enough out of its people?. In a number of cases, Yes. Several companies have rethought their management systems and accordingly are improving their utilisation of people to improve productivity. For some, capital and technology are the panacea for improved productivity and lower costs. Computerised mine planning, improved beneficiation processes, heftier longwall equipment, bigger trucks and shovels and upgraded coal clearance systems are expected to provide the answers.Whilst these factors are important they only contribute to part of the productive potential of a mining operation. Production flexibility provided by recent Industry award changes has brought about increases in total output. However, these improvements have not been matched by corresponding decreases in the unit cost of production.

Today, the selection of a mining method is a multi-criteria decisionmaking process, with many factors in this process connected to each other. These trends do not have a high degree of confidence. In this study the analytical hierarchy process was used to select the suitable mining method for anomaly No 3 of Gol-Gohar iron mine of Iran. The results of this study show that gathering all existing information from the exploration stages and using AHP technique, the open pit mining method is the mining method for this anomaly.

The resurgence of mining over the last 30 years has coincided with a growing awareness in the community of the importance of environmental protection and conservation. This involves a growing concern about environmental degradation, an increasing desire for the setting-aside of natural areas for wilderness preservation, accelerating pressures for the return of large areas of Crown land to Aboriginal ownership and a widening view that economic growth itself may be undesirable (Burton, 1987). This has lead to much public debate over the implementation of sound environmental policies to achieve a balance between economic necessities and ecological goals.

Prediction of large-scale underground opening stability in quite complex mining circumstances is being undertaken on a routine basis at The Zinc Corporation, Limited, (ZC) and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited (NBHC) Broken Hill, Australia. A three- dimensional numerical modelling technique has been developed that gives good correspondence with the observed behaviour in many stopes. New insights into the rock mechanics of under- ground mining are flowing from this work. The modelling practice can be taught to engineers in a reasonable time-frame. In-house computing facilities including graphics workstations are needed. The RMS software is designed to be user-friendly and very robust.
